Has Drake Maye proven he deserves to start? Mack Brown hints at two-QB strategy

wrapping up August and we wrap up a long summer without football the college kind and the NFL kind and certainly for those of you who are into the high school kind as well got back at into the bleachers over this past weekend hopefully your teams won and if your teams didn't hopefully they had fun shout out kenson High did they win one and0 oh they won one to nothing could hear that no one and0 one and0 one and0 to start the season okay got you is wait a second just other team didn't make it someone steal their helmets um Patriots wrapped up their preseason last night as did many other teams Patriots happened to do it on Sunday Night Football because NBC needed something to air that wasn't a DAT line show Drake May got some run last night for New England played against the Washington commanders of which Washington commanders kind of went through the motions right it was just kind of going through the motions but Drake may had to come in early jacobe Bret former State jacobe Bret exited with ER injury now apparently he's good that's according to the coach of the Patriots D Mayo he'll be okay they're going to review him on Monday you know he's a little bit sore did a right shoulder kind of thing he was going to play anyway but instead Drake May got some run Drake May looked pretty good everyone seemed to love him when Drake May comes into a game everybody perks up I think that is pretty common knowledge at this point I think if you're not a drake May guy if you're not a Carolina guy or you're not a Patriots fan or whatnot you think when Drake May enters the football games everyone kind of goes H okay let's see what happens and Drake May did what Drake May does threw for a touchdown now granted it was a 20-yard play that was created a little bit more by the running back that he threw it to former South Carolina guy but he was 13 of 20 and also flashed what we've seen him do at Carolina which is run the football as a relatively mobile quarterback but coach goes he's the second best quarterback on the team so what does that tell you about the belief that they have in Drake May or does that tell you something a little bit more about the process that they want to go through because the big rub on Drake early on in the preseason was didn't quite understand the game right slow to adapt he needs to learn the system and get things going but as me as casual Paul looking at the television screens and watching the the uh uh carefully curated highlights of Drake may it doesn't feel like he's making silly mistakes or am I wrong he's not turning the ball over by any means he's doing his checkdowns which I know people kind of make the joke that he's a check down Charlie at times but hey rather do that than make than try to force someone that's not there he's throwing the ball away when nothing's there you're right he's not making any costly costly mistakes I don't understand where coach Mayo is getting this impression that right now he is the second best quarterback in the depth chart so is this the longer play for Drake mate to set him up again if brette can't go do you just run with bayy zappy to be honest if the plan is to still make Drake may walk watch football and watch this team go I mean that could be the case unfortunately for Patriots fans they've seen that story before matter of fact they're on chapter 12 and that's another 0 and4 start to their season D sink or swim right is it kind of that way I mean for a lot of people you know in the business world the family World kind of you don't want to really drop people in on their heads when they drop you drop into the shallow pool you kind of want to wait in or at least go feet first to kind of take the sting out but I'm not sure Drake May being dumped in first is really a head first dump for him we've always understood that he had the knowledge and the quarterback depth of the position to be able to do things he has a very good offensive coordinator in Alex Van Pelt he definitely is respected in that room so is it really about what's complicating thing what's complicating things for the Patriots for that front office to not to go we drafted the guy third let's let him start the season as quarterback it couldn't be just because J jacobe Brett's got a boo boo on his shoulder I mean this could be a very grah Hill vanilla T and I didn't mention how I like vanilla ice cream from McDonald's earlier in the program but this just a simple motivation factor from coach Mayo to Drake May because Drake May has a reputation of being a competitive player one just coming from the family name of having his last name also in high school being named back up and to a starter transfer in high schools and then his senior season play in that former high school and going out there and having a standout performance and then even at Carolina leading up to his first Collegiate start with a tar Hills Matt Brown not naming who the starting quarterback was going to be making it seem like that it was a battle between Drake M and Kobe Chiswell is this simply just looking at his history and just trying to light the fire under him yeah is this the is this you and your buddies going out to eat and you can't decide on where you want to eat and you finally decide in a place and then you go and you stare at the menu for like 15 minutes hey man what do you want I don't know what do you want I don't know what do you want what do you think you're going to have I don't know what you what should I have and just goes back and forth and back and forth are you just toying around with a chicken crap decision just start the guy at this point like for me just start him don't play wishy-washy don't screw around with it because the more head games you play with these guys and I'm assuming Drake May has got a pretty good head on his shoulders based on everything you just said Graham whether or not he was going to be a starter whether or not you know he lives up to a legacy player or whatever it is I think it's just crap just start the guy say dude this is our starter like it hasn't prevented Shawn pton one of the most like criticized coaches in the last two seasons in the NFL to choose Bo Nick there you go yeah perfect example just pick somebody well also just comes down to what I said just simply put did you really dve did you draft this guy third overall just to be the backup this season that's rise young bled last year but then again he didn't really have a choice they screwed him up they could have played Andy DT Andy Dalton was good in relief but no one's going to go Andy Dalton serious Paul like there's a thousand of the guys out there could have done that who's really going to be good at relief for the for the Patriots this past as you as we just talked about they've gotten the bayy zappy experience our rage Jobe peret yeah he can win new games but he's starting to get up there in an age where injuries a real possibility and I mean how much stock are we put in uh Joe Milton what's the goal EXC what's the goal what's the goal for this team like every other team that's starting a rookie quarterback there seems to be some sort of alignment at least in the room like just make the choice you're not going to go wrong Deigo Ryan did it and in Houston with CJ strad who was the number two pick number two pick number three was there a clearcut guy is there a clear-cut guy in the Patriots room that says yeah we probably should let Drake May sit and just not do like let him earn the chemistry Joe burough started year one to earn the chemistry with Jamar Chase those two guys are like you know thick as peas Forest Gump right Jenny and Forest two P's and a pod let Drake me be that guy quit screwing around you're screwing with players you're screwing with their head and I'm so again I go I'm sure Drake May has a very level head when it comes to competition competitive fire right everything that you've read everything that you've heard he's good to go then believe it you see it on the field he's not doing stupid stuff out there he doesn't have Happy Feet and when his feet are happy guess what he does he runs with it he runs forward not backwards and he doesn't ground anything it doesn't Force too many things I'll take 13 and 20 13 of 20 not everyone's going to go 12 for 12 and have Tom Brady numbers like what is the expectation among the Patriots fan base and that's a rough fan base right like they are critical like you you talk to Patriots fans they are critical and they deserve to be they should be just like Philadelphia Eagles fans they should be Panthers fans you guys are in the same boat doesn't have to do with wins and losses doesn't have to do with championships or titles you're tough you're tough on your teams you demand things and that's good because you pay triple what you should be paying for beer to go enjoy a game in person or parking or whatever it happens to be you should be critical so you should look at these teams and look at these front offices and go quit screwing with the guys quit screwing with your young starters just start them I I know some people have said in the media well if you're if you really want Dr May to to uh thrive in the NFL you don't want to see him play at all in this NFL season what is an athlete like Drake May who I just mentioned is a very competitive person was he really going to game by just wearing a headset the entire year and looking at a Microsoft tablet where it's biley zappy jao Brett or Joe Milton highlights no that just screws with your head as a player and like you said I don't think Drake May is going to come out and say that you know he's GNA be supportive of whatever the coaching staff decides to do but if I'm Dr M that'd piss me off too if I had to sit an entire year let him throw let him Thrive let him heave let him take the sacks let him take his lumps it's okay if he's as levelheaded as we all believe he is we all want him to be or we all think he is then a rough year one if it turns out to be a rough year one there that's where we go we get into those if then statements right mathematicians if he has a rough year then year two is going to be great he'll have taken all those he have seen all that stuff and have adjusted to the game but if you look at the body of work and again we only have three preseason games and one of them was three snaps long against the Panthers but in a couple other things can you honestly say to yourself that jacobe or biley zappy or Joe Milton are better than just running Drake May out there with this team like what more can he learn by by studying tape and watching film and whatnot and he's being Mr vanilla about it too just like Bry young is being vanilla about the preseason with the Panthers he learning a lot doing a lot of things can't wait to see what the regular season not here to support my guys great give those answers out all you want but I pray that somebody in that organization like turns the light bulb on and goes you know what run them out there let it happen you're not stunt anybody's growth you're just holding them back from growing and planning on playing both quarterbacks uh depending on how the game dictates I mean one of the problems we had last year is Connor came in the West Virginia game without any experience because Drake didn't play in the bowl game so part of developing depth um we we want to have two quarterbacks rate to play did Mac have that press conference in like a men's bathroom there are some writers there they're just pounding away on those typewriters or laptops or portable keys or whatever it is um ma Brown G to go with Max Johnson and Caro herrell known as the Andor on the depth charts against Minnesota if there's one guy that would understand a two quarterback system it's Nick Sabin Nick sain picked North Carolina to win on college game day while they were in Ireland Nick sain's a big fan undefeated going into the Florida State game November 2nd undefeated now when you go are you crazy did you actually drink some of that whiskey you took the two or four then you go Minnesota Charlotte NC Central James Madison those are the first four next four Duke pit Georgia Tech and Virginia and they don't have to travel more than 10 miles out of the state until October 26th when they go to Virginia I you know what I think I think there's some truth there to Kirk if you get past Minnesota the rest of that schedule for North Carolina is wide open no Manny Diaz is going to crap down your neck what do you mean he's com they're going to Duke well they're going to the party deck that'll be competitive but again rebuilding year for Duke but it's also rebuilding for North Carolina Georgia Tech now he said this before Georgia Tech be Florida State he knew Virginia was going to start their sophomore quarterback so he doesn't believe the Cavaliers will be a threat to them well so now you go a blurry is it a blurry 8 and0 for a lot of folks I had to put my readers on for a little bit and I'm thinking about it I mean North Georgia Tech currently 2-0 against North Carolina in the past two meetings so two quarterbacks are okay the reasoning behind coach Brown's two quarterbacks things because he's worried about the ball game at the end of the season that's an interesting way to kind of back up your argument so to speak he's also not going to release the depth chart ahead of Minnesota we don't need to play that because that's pretty self-explanatory he's trying to keep them in the dark and I get it but if you've got enough tape you figure out what Omari and Hampton can do with Minnesota essentially Minnesota did the exact same thing they're not releasing a depth chart either well they're the the the the emphasis behind the 12 team college football playoff right that's where we're at but Carolina picked to go 8 and0 8 and0 to start the season so write that on the bulletin board folks KK KB Street on the record saying that uh quickly Carolina Hurricanes fans uh note for you no Seth Jarvis signing but uh you will be stuck with the balet sports app for another season allegedly uh Bankruptcy Court Diamond Sports is the parent of Bal Sports they will still be showing Carolina Hurricanes games in the upcoming season there are nine NHL teams that they still do business with there are roughly 11 to 13 NBA teams that they still do business with but if you want to watch the games for Carolina Hurricanes ice hockey starting uh early o October uh it'll be through b Sports at least for one more season so that's a little bit in the weeds behind the scenes but there were some thoughts that that could be could land on a different platform perhaps Amazon
