Duke Football names Maalik Murphy as starting quarterback

they did at Duke late last night you're waking up this morning thinking to yourself you know I wonder if Duke is going to name a starting quarterback for their game against Elon now is this a really pressure-packed decision that needed to be made by Manny Diaz I mean after all it is just Elon and elon's like wait a second wait a second no we want we want to know we want to know who we're going to face well Duke at 8:00 last night put out a tweet and then sent out a release I was like wow oh my goodness what's this Malik Murphy going to start qb1 the incoming transfer from Texas the guy who literally goes I'm going to Duke as duke is winning in the Birmingham Bowl the same day goes I'm coming to Duke that's how committed he was yep playing football at Duke stays last through the last through the uh the preseason Spring ball everyone making each other better right and then ends up being [Music] qb1 his hashtag by the way on Twitter Smooth Operator smv Operator that's not a joke that is his Twitter handle and he just got a lot more followers last night as a Duke football quarterback committed day one all gas no breaks that's what he hashtagged ready to go and he's here and and he's going to start for Duke so of the 3M in Carolina coaching Dum Mike Houston made his choice over the weekend he's going to go with Jake Garcia transfer from Missouri I'm I'm still a little shoted over that GNA go there Duke Manny Diaz The Other M going to go with the guy that he wanted to that he that committed day one right before he even walked in the door Malik Murphy and then the other M ma Brown has yet to make a decision on his quarterback situation much like they're having a decision about the same kind of quarterback situation down in South Carolina there are quarterback battles still to be played out but decisions have been made so these picks just keep on coming in by the way Malik Murphy talked about how that quarterback situation that competition was making him better he spoke to us at ACC kickoff it's been great honestly I couldn't ask for Grayson to be uh any better of a person and as a a kind of like a a partner to work with with um you know him being here him having the experience and the knowledge of Duke as a program and knowing the people that's been here that's come through here that are here currently um he's able to help me get a better feel for everywhere everywhere and everyone that's around me um and that's Henry as well you know I asked all of those guys questions I'm a big uh kind of like want to know new stuff type of person so um I don't mind asking questions anything that comes into my mind I let them know it so um I'm definitely grateful he looks the part Graham I was just about to say it's funny that you bring up the hashtags and the social media handles and everything about Malik Murphy because guess who he said when he also spoke with Pat Welter wrl at ACC kickoff guess who he said he tries to model his game after as far as former quarterbacks in the NFL Cam Newton Cam Newton and he kind of looks the part of Cam new I'm not just talking about the hair but the body size being able to run being able to throw a deep ball I mean I went and saw when I was just previewing or when I was pregnant for the show I was watching some of his highlights of high school or some of his high schore highlights I mean man if he's at the 50 and he has time to throw it downfield he can get he can launch the ball to about the 10 yard line I mean he has an arm so the bit is you went from a guy with swagger in Riley Leonard who took the bag and he's now at Notre Dame and we're going to get a closer look at Leonard at Notre Dame throughout this entire season because it's Notre Dame so they're on TV like every week in prime time and whatnot there's a a new series coming out on peacock about Notre Dame football so you replace a Riley Leonard and you put into Malik Murphy he looks the part you think he's going to act the part and you hope he can raise the Duke profile to where they're being picked towards the bottom right like the schedule does not set up for what set up for them as well as everyone believes it should set up for them in terms of experts that was the next thing I was getting ready to say you hope that he can be the starter from start to finish fin this season because again when you look at their schedule I call it the gauntlet of the triangle teams that's Duke football this year yeah it's a that's a rough bit for them I mean there's no doubt about it there it's not a it's not uh you know how they've been saying how you know NC State home schedule's favorable North Carolina absolutely schedule is favorable in some aspects there's a lot of favorable schedules in the in the col in college football Duke is not one of those teams that has a favorable schedule I mean let's just call it like it is Carolina open up and I know there's a lot of questions about Carolina's offense but that game always delivers when it's the battle for the Victory Bell Florida State at home SMU at home NC State on the road Virginia Tech who's on the upbringing this year in the ACC and then Miami on the road who's expected to do things do big things I'm still questioning how good Miami will be but it's not a favorable schedule paulander Graham Hill next up here on 999 the fan I have no skin in the game when it comes to Duke but we talk about them because they made a decision and congratulations to them for making a decision I I hope they over deliver on expectations I hope Murphy overd delivers on some of the expectations for him as well you had to beat out an incumbent right it wasn't like Grayson Loftus was a guy who didn't have any running games the same way with with Henry as well but he's got to come in and make some things happen and he picked this school for a reason he was in on day one he saw an opportunity he seized it now let's see what happens with this team now they picked 11th by the way 11th in the ACC to where we talk about preseason expectations right and again we're seeing a lot of these so-called expert picks come out socalled predictions here's something to piss all of you off right now is that and this will go for State fans more than any others Brett McMurphy who's Mr Bull prediction I call him Mr Bull prediction because that's what he does all season long and he Nails a lot of these too as we get closer he Nails a lot of them but his track record's pretty good in terms of his 12 team predictions state is not part of them matter of fact folks start booking your trips and your airbnbs in New York he's got State going to the Pinstripe Bowl shees not even in the top 12 this is being echoed in other places by the way when it comes to the early run ESPN model right now does not have them in the top 12 when they finally uh dro the first rankings November 5th Carolina going to the sunbow so pass me the Old El Paso ladies and gentlemen Carolina to the sunbow and App State to the New Orleans bowl that is it no mention of East Carolina who we've talked about on this program definitely no mention of Duke so if you want chips on the shoulders or things to ride on the on the dry eras board and yes I hear it coaches if you're listening there's assistants I know they're in the car right now you're like ah I don't need to write that on the dry race board yeah you do because now you got something else to overcome all the preseason rankings all the thoughts that you have in your head others do not think the same about you they do not now we try to lean in on it here a little bit because of who we are right just because we are here and this is what you expect and we want all of them to do well I'm like hopefully everybody had fun right no that's part of it there's no doubt about it rivalries are different but when we talk about Paving that road and getting into the college football playoff which is expanded to 12 or to play in meaningful games in November and early December which is where these champion ship will be laid out which is where these rankings will will find you and sort you out like the Sorting hats and Harry Potter or divergent or whatever fantasy novels you read as a kid or as a young adult because now you're much older there are expectations of these teams but others clearly do not think the same I mean to predict NC State will be playing in the Pinstripe Bowl and the term bullettin board is a term that you should use very Loosely around head Dave Dorne I know personally when I was just a young reporter and I say young like literally a year ago when I went to my first media availability I used that term around head coach Dave Dorne and he got on me I I always admit when I'm wrong so there's a reason why I write out my questions whenever I go to these media availabilities Annabelle if you're listening I hope you can appreciate it a little inside baseball but the reason why I say that is because when you go and look at the 2023 pinstrip bulll from last season and you see that it was and no disrespect to these teams the rudar Scarlet Knights and the Miami Hurricanes playing in it Miami finished seven and six last season you're pretty much say that you're expecting the wheels to fall off the train this year for NC State and what should be their greatest season Under head coach Dave Dorne and you're picking them to finish in the Pinstripe Bowl what this is the interesting part about a team like State and State fans You can disagree or agree with me is that the lack of waves right is that the raw raw you don't have to Raw raw as hard this year in terms of belief and hopefully you're able to get some of that this is just NC State stuff out of your head is to get the wins right to get the dubs but it's not being barked about right across college football right around your neck of the woods just in your personal house you're like you're like we're winning we're making this thing happen and you have to avoid the excuses at this point but you have people that doubt you year after year after year if you look at the current CBS prognostications when it comes to the ACC expert picks no one has them higher finishing than second which is good but you have the majority of Voters suggesting that they are a fourth place team and fourth place will not cut it in the new cfp model it will not get you there especially coming out of the ACC real quickly just to I'm not going to say infuriate NC State fans a little more but just to go back what I was saying about how much of a slap in the face it is that somebody in the media is predicted to finish in the pinstrike bowl you know what North Carolina's finished to or predicted to finish or what bowl game they're predicted to go to Paul the sunbowl El Paso baby I love El Paso great town and last year your Oregon RI or your Oregon Ducks Rivals Oregon State and Ne Dame played in that and that was the first sbol to feature two ranked teams in the AP poll since 2008 it was a junk game too so if anything well a terrible game it was a terrible game with just the two caliber teams that you got Carolina if this all came true and this predic was real Carolina gets the better bit in these bowl games at the end of the season you're looking at teams where you see these numbers and we see them we're being bombarded with these and we're trying to sort a lot of this stuff out for you but the thoughts of either state or Carolina and I'm excluding Duke from this because Duke is not predicted to higher finish anywhere near where State and Carolina are these teams have there are low expectations of these teams climbing out of the top four maybe five in terms of Carolina like they are burying these two teams and there there are again if history serves as your guide and where you are you're talking about replacing big names on offense and defense for both teams but who tooled up more who tooled up better I would argue state right it feels like it right right across the board right across the board zero you cannot argue that point but they're not being thought of as a team like a Clemson they're not being thought of as a team like Florida state they're not being thought of as a team like Miami and I'm hoping t-shirts are being printed right now I'm hoping t-shirts are being printed with those three teams and you're just able to cross out X's as the season moves along you have doubters there are doubters out there and we haven't played game one yet I can't wait for BARC still pack to tweet out the uh or start to make it a routine where each week they tweet out the uh the Grim Reaper meme of him like you know knocking on the door with a trail of blood behind him where it has like Miami Virginia Tech you know the teams that NC State are playing in the ACC because again I use the term bulletin board very Loosely when it comes to NC State football's program but they have everything in the world to light a fire under their you know what going into the season their ass you can say it you can say it you can say it good morning everybody parents dropping off your kids in the car poool appreciates the shout out there could be this is the greatest show on this Tuesday morning so to of vioa the man who uh has did well for me in my fantasy football draft last year has come out and suggested that his first couple years in the NFL sucked because of his former coach Brian Flores Brian Flores was there for two seasons with Tua and and when to a talk with uh Dan lebatard recently he was asked to compare the two coaches his current coach Mike McDaniel who everybody seems to love and that goes into the hockey world too he does the whole pound the drum thing at Florida Panthers games and then you know everybody went oh is he quirky no he's just a fairly decent coach positive guy again a little bit different than others Tua was asked to compare Mike McDaniel with Brian Flores his prior coach and this is kind of uncharacteristic for Tua but you can kind of sense some seething in this if you woke up every morning and I told you you sucked at what you did that you don't belong doing what you do that you shouldn't be here that this guy should be here that you haven't earned this right and then you have somebody else come in and tell you dude you are the best fit for this like you are accurate you are the best whatever you are this you are that like how would it make you feel listening to one or the other you see what I'm saying and then you hear it you hear it regardless of what it is the good or the bad and you hear it more and more you start to actually believe that I don't care who you are you you could be the president of the United States you have a terrible person that's telling you things that you you don't want to hear or that that you probably shouldn't be hearing you're going to start to believe that about yourself and so that's sort of like what what ended up happening in 2020 Tua played alongside Ryan Fitzpatrick who Fitz magic Fitz magic was the starter for 20 games for the Dolphins was 9 and 11 when Tua played Tua in that season was not so hot and then the second season he split time with jacobe Bret who was locked in a sort of battle in New England with Drake may not really much of a battle I was going to say air quotes around the word battle Yeah it's going to be May's job but Bret's the guy who's going to go in there and play ball jacobe brassette two and three as a starter for the Miami Dolphins now you come out and torch somebody like that and this is the Human Torch it's like dude didn't want me in the building dude didn't didn't support me but he gave him starts like Brian Flores gave him plenty of starts started 21 games while he was there average whatever it was year after that Tua takes over has a couple things but 2023 two plays an entire full season now is this just a gap between a head coach and a quarterback a Young quarterback who again when you think about it and we talk about this a little bit with the Carolina Panthers 2 when it comes to Bryce young and who was tutoring him to attack of aloa is no slouch was not a slouch played for the greatest college football coach in the history of college football in Nick Sabin and then goes to play for Miami for Brian Flores two completely different coaches now you would think that Nick sain and say anything bad about Nick Sabin just try just try and you're like it gets you just say it and you're like I sound stupid trying to say bad things about him so when you say things out loud like that when Tua comes out and says something like that and Tu is not a two is not a make you believe kind of like I've got the chip on my shoulder going to run you down now there are some aspects of his game that say that but for him to come out and voice something like that there has to be a little shred of truth to it now does it harm Brian flores's reputation in that I don't know it's just one person's opinion it doesn't make him look great but two was thriving in a new system he he was asked on the spot this is the big difference and maybe Mike McDaniel with some of those quirks and how he feels and how he looks and how he operates in terms of getting people to go for what he believes in there's it's a different kind of motivation and in this first season when McDaniel took over he was N9 and8 right nine and8 with the dolphins in 2022 and in 2023 with two at the helm 11 and six right they lose to the Chiefs in that game where like helmets were getting cracked it's always the Chiefs or the bills that always eliminate the Miami Dolphins it seems like when it comes to the playoffs but it feels like they're in a different place right you think think about the Dolphins you don't think about ah it's just a garbage team they're going to roll over so there has to be a somewhat of a shred of Truth in it when you talk about motivating factors maybe it's just the messaging maybe it's different now what you haven't heard all morning long and we're borrowing a little bit from unsportsmanlike is what Brian Flores actually had to say and he thinks it was a lot different Brian Flores speaking with I am athlete this is a this is an interesting topic because uh it wasn't strained we had a good relationship um it was a player coach relationship and I think in a relationship like that you know the coach challenges the player and often times the player challenges the coach and I think there was a great deal of respect between the two of us um so you hear these crazy kind of this narrative that's out there um but this is a a young man who who works who developed and got better over two years and you know I think he's got a a a a you know a bright future and I wish him all the best so the world can think what it wants to think I think uh as to him you know I'm I'm me I'm here to say what I got to say and you you can ask him so I think he'd say the same thing okay oh Brian you are sadly miss you are sadly mistaken so did we miss something like was there something missed in the in the translation between how he was coached and then what's happened in the couple of years since then I I mean and I'm not I'm trying to give two it the benefit of the doubt because when you look at Brian flores's track record during his time of the Miami Dolphins it was not good but it was this simply just a case of I disagree with my head coach so therefore I don't like him on two's part there has to a healthy respect right between quarterback and Coach there has to be healthy respect in the world that you live in between teacher and student I think that's the easiest way to apply this in instances there there had to be some sort of communication gap between the two where Flores suggested that it was this is a player coach relationship and Tua says this wasn't a relationship at all this was business and I was being run down on a daily basis like there has to be a shred of Truth there and this is where I'm this is where I'm troubling because I wonder how it will it will not affect two at all two is a two is becoming an elite quarterback in the NFL he's Elite Playmakers around him he's getting paid like an elite guy and Mike McDaniel probably did something better with him than Flores did by tailoring the system to him by ensuring that the players that were surrounding him echoed what was surrounding him at Alabama guys that could run Slants guys that were Speedy guys that Tua could get the ball out to quick and it's been Night and Day from the first couple of seasons of Tua to the last couple of Seasons because everyone wondered was this guy a bust it's the same kind of Echoes right you hear the same kind of echo about Bry shung ah early on in Bry sh Young's career right now the same kind of stuff that you were hearing with Tua just at a little bit different of a pace it took a couple of years for Brian floores to exit and bring in someone that could figure him out it took one year right now and again we haven't seen the test we talked about this a little bit yesterday Graham when you weren't here we haven't seen BR shung take the Canalis test yet in real life we've seen it in the joint practice but not on the field with a clock running and that's what we're all waiting for I'm trying to draw a few parallels here but now the light bulbs coming on with everybody wait a second are we hearing the same thing play out in Carolina as we are here with Tua in Miami now another parallel that I would like to draw based off that comparison he just made Paul is that and I'm not trying to compare the two players to say the exact same but it took a couple years to get a Tyreek kill down in Miami to help boost up to his performance it's taking one year for the Carolina Panthers to get again I'm not trying to say they're the they're on the same level I know you're not I know where you're going but it took them one year to get a caliber receiver IND Deontay Johnson who it sounds like has taken over as the veteran receiver in practices for the Panthers so far it took me a little bit long to get there stagram but I think everyone's kind of digging in a little bit and everyone's oh yeah okay that's what makes you a good radio host I see what you were doing I just I just want to help y'all out just a little teeny bit but hey you draw your own conclusions but you see where I'm headed on that one
