from quarterback Sam lit levit for the first time since he was named the Arizona State starting quarterback we're going to get into what he had to say and Coach Kenny Dillingham as well fall Camp wraps up tomorrow so what did we see today from the sundevils and then of course at the tail end of the show we're going to take a look at some former Arizona State quarterbacks and how they performed in their Arizona State debuts and what might be in store for Sam levit in just 11 days can you believe it Eric we're less than two weeks away we're getting there we've we've made it through the mud man fall Camp almost I think we were going to get here you didn't think we were gonna make it I didn't think we were gonna get what do you think was gonna happen it was just gonna be an endless cycle of practice endless cycle of alen Iverson's worst nightmare yeah Bor no stop it you're making me sick to my stomach absolutely sick to my stomach fun we did we guess not we I mean we had a good time we had a good time we had a good we had a good time we had a good time I guess I was the only one over here having a good time we got shared in chat Emily House of heat Sports will what's up guys we appreciate you taking time out of here in the chat from House of heat yeah House of heat Sports saying Sam levit reminds me a lot of Taylor Kelly he might lead us to a big 12 Champion wow what happens what happens if they do that this year if they win the Big 12 Championship it's the greatest Zero to Hero story in college football history bar nun hands down completely hist un to if they if they go What Happens if ASU Wins Big 12 Championship? if they go three wins last season to a big 12 Championship to winning the Big 12 I.E making the college football playoffs yeah yeah in one year with all these transfers it's the greatest Zero to Hero INB history why you know why that would happen not because of Sam love it why because Kyle's behind the back now because of the coupe that's right 100% so they to follow his method eat some bear meat don't eat breakfast dude I'll eat a bear live if we go to the big 12 championship game the bear is live or we're live the bear is live oh jeez yeah okay just a little bear though not a big bear you're gonna kill okay let's let's move fast this if Sam L leaves us to a big 12 championship this season we're EA a bear you're eating a bear I will not you want to help me uh let's get into this when it happens I will I would I I would eat bear but I don't know if I'm going to take down a live on stream I think we might have some um some monetization problems I that's fair that's fair look before we get into the bear and the Big 12 sure okay uh which is not to be confused with the bear in the blig blue house which Quality quality children didn't know yeah great program great program um let's see what we saw from practice today again fall Camp wraps up tomorrow lock in Eric so stupid the the wide outs I want to talk a little bit about the wide receivers we we talked a little bit about the chart or at least the two deep last week on the show just in terms of what you might expect from some of these guys as Camp has started to ramp up we have definitely got an idea as to who's going to be starting in certain positions the wide receivers to me seems complete the trio that you're going to see against Wyoming is definitely going to be Jordan Tyson Malik mlan and melquan stal Let's Talk Starting Wide Outs assuming there's no injuries of course and then you will have a likely rotation Jake Smith Troy omir and then of course course Xavier gillery in there as well but Malik mlan has is really the most surprising I think of those three because you saw W Troy Amir did last year obviously all the hype to Jake Smith and that takes nothing away from them but Malik mlan has been better than advertised than when he was in the portal um and he's going to be one of a couple guys that got here in the fall didn't play in Spring ball that are going to be key to what ASU does not only against Wyoming Eric but really for the rest of the season yeah you know who know about Malik mlan College Football 25 college football college football 25 knew about Malik mlan listen I I think when he transferred over here you looked at all of just like the raw potential his physicality as well and you said that's somebody that's definitely going to play yeah I don't think there was any reality where he wasn't going to get any burn after transferring over here but starting yeah I I'm I am a little bit surprised but I would also not be shocked if I mean you're going to see a healthy dose of almost everybody Troy's going to get some run Jake going to get some run I think even relique is going to be put out as a wi out a couple times as well I I do think that this is going to be kind of a rotating cast of characters so whoever is starting which I'm like I'm I'm good I that's a Dre Jordan Tyson melquan stoval Malik mlan I think they all bring something a little bit different uh I feel like maybe Jordan Tyson's kind of like a mix of the two yeah and I think that with Tyson being your pseudo number one right now I think you have to actually go out there and watch him play but then you add that in with with stoval is probably just the most like consistent grounded receiver that you have the guy that you can rely on the most maybe he's going to be your more short medium- range kind of guy um and and then you throw Malik mlan which is just a different body type than those other two yeah I I think that's a good combination and I do think that your Jake Smiths of the world your Troy omir of the world even even your uh your Giller are going to be able to to slot in there as well I wouldn't be surprised if they're just rotating through and keeping guys fresh I think they're all going to have their Niche right this season and I think when I look at what Arizona State's offense is going to be this season obviously the goal based off of what we've seen from Marcus a royo's offense and Spring ball in Fall Camp is you're going to want to make it third and manageable right and every team's going to tell you that but I think based off of the way that this offense is constructed based off of some of the guys that they have in that roster I think it is going to be okay we've set oursel up for a manageable third and four third and three and we allow Marcus Oro as an offensive coordinator as a play caller to be like okay we still have the ability to run the football whether that be with a guy like cam scabo kaon Brown alt mcal obviously that list of characters goes on and on or do we want to pass the football and I think a guy like mwan stoval is Really Gonna Be a Menace on Third and short because of the way he gets in and out of his routes because he does have such consistent hands again best hands on the team in my personal opinion um and then you've got a guy like Malik mlan who we saw at practice today just he's a remarkable Talent at his size there was a play today in practice inside the bubble Sam and the offense the majority of it they were rolling left and mik mlan was running a go on the right side Sam turned his shoulders heaved one probably a good 50 yards and Malik mlan caught it and stride for a touchdown um and the offense obviously went nuts for that he's got the speed that Troy omir doesn't necessarily have Troy is is fast but he doesn't have really that second gear that Malik does and then there was another point today Sam just dropped back and heaved one over to the middle to Jordan Tyson Tyson made just a phenomenal full body dive to go snag that one and he went nuts the offense went nuts again so you're starting to see that chemistry and when we talk about the cast of characters at Wide Receiver right Xavier giler Jake Smith Troy omir maybe even some Walk-Ons getting some playing time as well like you have started to see just the the rewards of Ayo and Kenny kind of sticking with Sam getting those one reps as these wide receivers whether they've been changing um or just really staying put with the ones as well like you're starting to see that chemistry now well I think there's a double-edged sword here and I I forget who it was in the comments yesterday but talking about Kenny using the lack of Big 12 familiarity as an advantage and he's going to be scheming things up as well yeah and I think there's also an inherited advantage to having so many different players and especially players that have transferred or haven't played in the past 365 days yeah and being able to have some sort of continuity with them which is like you mentioned great point that levit has always been running with the ones yep and even though it's been a quote competition you know it's always been hey levit is here and then everybody is chasing him and not that others didn't have a shot or others weren't having a good camp as we've been talking about Jeff Sims and Trenton por Gade non-stop as well but it's always been hey but the expectation is yeah right and they've been acting like that as well giving him those first string reps and I think one of the really cool things about having not only a deep wide receiver room but a deep running back room as well is that defenses are going to stay on their toes because a lot of these guys don't necessarily overlap yeah right like we talked about Malik mlan having a very unique skill set for his body type as well I think Jordan Tyson is a one-on-one on this team I think mwano all like you said best hands on the team Troy might be the best Highpoint catcher he might be able the guy who can go and get it up the most right Jake Smith might be the fastest yeah right I I think that there is enough different here for somebody like a Marcus Ayo and a Kenny Dillingham to sit back and be able to keep really good defenses on their toes and as long as you mix that in with of course cam scabo but as we mention a little bit some other running backs who are going to make some noise as well lit's not going to have to do a ton like we mentioned yesterday but as long as he can keep it contained and and I know how a heat heat Sports is talking about lit's overthrows I think that's definitely something that needs to be monitored but there are so many different types of ways for this offense to get some yards and even in the chat talking about like f that throw deep balls yeah they definitely have those threats and I think they're not going to go to it often but you're going to find that they're going to be very timely when they do yeah and that is going to be a massive like weapon for this football team yeah no you're absolutely right not only are are you going to have a bunch of different ways to beat teams and it's GNA make it kind of a nightmare for a secondary to to deal with all of these guys but by having such depth now you're keeping these guys fresh right which is going to be huge when you do get to a late game scenario where maybe you do need a drive right you do need to drive to March 80 yards and go put some points on the board um to take the lead to hold the lead doesn't matter but now you've got fresh guys not just that wide receiver but of course let's get into the running backs as well we know Scot is going to be the the lead Workhorse Who Will Back Up Cam Skattebo? for Arizona state that's never really in doubt but really since the beginning ofing even it's been okay what's the number two and three going to look like and there's obviously relique Brown there's alt mcal there's Dar caros Brooks who was here last year Jason Brown continues to impress as well I'm interested if we even see Jason Brown this season just because there are so many bodies in that running back room and maybe he could benefit from you know similar to Keith Abney and Montana Warren last year just not playing NE NE sitting devop but a guy that you're see a lot of thison is brown brown has gotten bigger he's gotten more consistent in practice he's a guy that's started to really hone in um in his ability to run in between the tackles while also being able to break out and be a threat in the passing game as well and if you remember kaon Brown's very first Carry as an Arizona state sundevil was I believe a three yard loss and a fumble right so to see him go from that to now spending a year really kind of focusing on his Craft um in learning from a guy like scat learning from a guy in the Carlos Brooks who has experience in the Pack 12 as well um and now he is in my estimation going to be the second running back um that you are going to see a ton of this season he is outside of alt mcal one of the biggest backs on the team and I think that's going to help an offense that has a little bit more of a I don't want to say a vertical threat but Scot's such a Shifty guy now right because he's slim down he's got the speed we know he loves to lower his shoulder but if you need a brute in there to take two yards to get a yard yeah Kason Brown I'm totally comfortable with him being there yeah uh the the practice that I was able to see I'm gonna stop saying Camp te because you made fun of me the other day for it uh he had Warrior he had one of the best best plays of the day and he's got the speed to go along with it as well he really does have like all your Basics hey are you a running back that we can actually use and he checks a lot of those boxes I think a lot of these running backs check a lot of boxes and I think that the same way with the wide receiver room you kind of have a different tool for everything that you need to do yeah right it it's kind of incredible when you sit back and you look at it and you compare it to last year where it's like hey you know obviously D Carlos being injured was a big part of this but hey cam do everything just be absolutely everything not just in the running back room but also in the quarterback room and also be a punter as well and now you're looking at Cam and you're saying hey man we only really need you to do this one thing granted it's a massive thing Workhorse running back number one right yeah but we just need you to go out there and for you to be you and Glenn in the chat says a testament to iguano absolutely I've been covering aguano since he was in Chandler uh the years when he won his state championships I've had personal conversations with him well before he was here at ASU uh not just from a per personal perspective but from a football perspective um I have absolute faith in him to get the most out of these guys and I think you are seeing that yeah I think even just the fact that you could look at what cam did last year and be like hey you know what we're just going to lower your workload but you don't have to change anything but instead they say Hey you were incredible last year let's fine-tune you let's find a better way for us to use you and maybe a better way for you to translate from this level to the next level and iguano has his fingerprints all over that and it's a testament to have this type of depth and to have anybody step up there in that running back room and talk about hey you might have a guy like Jason Brown who's not even going to play but if he did I I wouldn't be uncomfortable with that I would actually be excited to see him get carries and so I'm super confident in this Run game for a lot of different reasons but Glenn with the guano comment is a massive one and I do think that sometimes he gets a little loss in the fold right because he's not an offensive coordinator defensive coordinator head coach that's just kind of the way things go I don't think he gives a crap but it is important to highlight him and that is somebody that from the first moment I spoke to him when he was in high school I was like this guy gets it and when he was interim coach like I was happy with it you know and so I think having him in this type of role is going to Bear a lot of fruit like it did last season to be quite Frank you're absolutely right I think I was telling somebody out there today Scott needs to be a thousand yard rusher this year if he's a thousand yard rusher this year then I think Arizona state has a pretty successful season but a lot of what Arizona State's going to be able to accomplish on the ground through the air a lot of it is going to depend on that offensive line and specifically those tackles right Mad Max How is the Offensive Line Shaping Up? at right tackle um and then of course you have EMT B transitioning from right tackle to left tackle uh because of just kind of the nature of the situation Jaylen Clem still people um does doesn't appear you know that that he's coming back anytime soon let's just not count on it right so with those guys being your left and right tackles this season expect to see Cameron harpool right the San Diego State transfer um at tight end specifically off that right side helping max if he does motion over help EMT b um and that's a big part of why they brought in Cameron Harpo right he's not necessarily the the big threat in the passing game the way that a shaman might be um he's not necessarily a guy that you're going to throw him the ball and he's going to be able to drag tackle tacklers Like A marcuson Douglas um he's not necessarily A Premier future threat like a Jaden Fortier but what Cameron does do better than any Arizona State tight end over the last two years is he can sit there put his hand in the dirt and he can move an edge rusher he can move an outside linebacker and take him to the second level uh because that's what he does as a run blocker um so definitely expect to see a lot of him and I think it's just going to help this Arizona State offensive line continue to build a little bit more chemistry yeah anything you can get out of the tight end room as far as blocking goes even in the wide receiver room as well I think one thing that we've heard a lot about from Jordan Tyson is the fact that he's also a very good run blocker as well that's fair I I think that's something that you're going to really have to keep your eye on at every position besides offensive line with this team because it is going to be run first it is going to be run heavy uh I I even think marcuson like he's going to he's going to drag people but he's a big boy he's also going to help in that blocking game as well and you know other tight ends like you're going to be relying on them to catch the ball you don't want to just have your tight ends be blocking but again when you're going to be running the ball what 70 80% of the time yeah you know you you need fresh bodies to come in and you can't just rely on your offensive line as well like the tight end is the extension of the offensive line and so I I am excited to see Cameron I think that that is something that you know for this show and I think for some Die Hard fans you're going to be keeping your eye on but when it comes to like your every day kind of people who just following the team they probably won't understand that impact but you know it's going to go a long way if cam is going to be a thousand yard rusher this year it's not just going to be because cam is great it's GNA be a massive part because cam is great but it's also going to be because hey this offensive line This tight end room is going to be very very strong and set this team up for success in the same way that they're going to set levit up for Success if Lev's able to complete deep balls what is that saying yeah no you're you're absolutely he's been protected long enough for him to throw the damn ball yeah which again it's it's huge not just at Arizona State but really in any offense do you want to get to some comments in the chat Glenn saying who's our best blocking running back I would say scat is probably your best blocking running back yeah he packs a punch again they all kind of bring different elements to this offense you look at alt mcal he's a much taller guy he is pretty quick and Shifty um kaon Brown we've already talked about he's he's put on Who is the Best Blocking Running Back? weight but in a good way right put on muscle U but Scott just simply because he is a little bit shorter I would say it is easier for him to do something like that uh but really all these backs coming out of the back field they provide something different um and beneficial to this offense um so it's going to be a lot of fun house a heat Sports does anyone know what really happened to Mason WIlliams I looked on his IG and he didn't post anything about leaving we talked about it a little bit on yesterday's show um so I would definitely go back listen to that podcast but again Mason WIlliams no longer with the Arizona State sundevils um he's got stuff going on in his personal life as well um don't want to comment too much on that especially if that's not already out there so again take a listen to yesterday's podcast um and see what you guys think about Mason WIlliams retiring from college football I just say just be nice like don't don't be rude man parents don't always speak for that parents don't always speak for their kids and you never know really what's going on there is no reason to approach this in a negative or rude way wish him the best and leave it at that yeah that's all I'll say yeah that's fair uh look we will be right back going to take a quick break when we do come back we're going to get to the defensive side of the ball we can recap what we saw on the second of last day of fall Camp from Brian Wards defense we're going to hear from Arizona State quarterback Sam levit for the first time since being named the starter but before we get into all of do all the edits it looks good the it's it's really really cool I'm super excited another thing coach Stark in the chat I called it Ser like seriously you can't say that about a lot of people like oh yeah he's probably in the chat right now and he's here shout out coach Stark and you know he's working yes and some some breaking news in the NFL world uh according to Jordan Schultz Brandon iuk and the 49ers had another meeting yesterday and talks continue to progress on a longterm contract extension former Arizona State wi receiv so he might be staying in the bay after it's all said and that's just three quick things but let's go back to camp today because you have a lot more interesting stuff than you saw yeah so the the defense we've talked a lot about the secondary and the linebackers over the last three weeks Players Who Make an Immediate Impact on the Defensive Line but really what's what's become super super noticeable over the last few days is the defensive line and guys that are standing out there uh players that are going to make an immediate impact especially Elijah O'Neal Elijah O'Neil has been a suvil for a while now but never really had that opportunity still had some things that he needed to work on technically in his game to be able to see the field he's always been a big big defensive end but being able to pair that now being technically sound with new defensive line coach donon Reynolds and still working with Vince Amy um in a little bit of a way you should expect to see Elijah O'Neal on the field a lot this season I think he's got the potential to be a three- down defensive lineman which if you're a d lineman that is literally the the best and biggest thing that being down there on running downs and then also being able to pin years back and go get the quarterback on third down as well so Elijah O'Neal he's had one of the best camps of any sundevil so far and the reward of it is in 11 days when ASU kicks off he's gonna see the field yeah and I think he's kind of a name that's been flying under the radar especially because you've seen a lot of new players come in as well you you haven't really heard a lot about Elijah O'Neal really from any any Source right even if you're just tweeting about people having good practic right you just don't see his name out there that much but I think that's just a testament to the type of depth that this team has it's a testament to how many different players can come up and actually make an impact and I think that's something that we've been really excited about is listen Elijah O'Neal might be that guy you're like man he just keeps making plays out there yeah right that's fair but he also might be one of many that's doing that I I just I I'm really really excited just to to actually start seeing these guys play football and I think that that is something where I'm G to be keeping my eye on on Elijah for sure I'm so damn pumped to finally have games here in just a couple less than two weeks man because it's it gets exhausting sometimes just practice practice practice I get it yeah um but there's nothing like game week there's nothing like game day like no it's it's just Elite even house heat Sports in the chat says he's just he just wants week one tired of the preseason hype I know he can see he's so ready listen we're trust me if anybody can relate to you it is these two people sitting up here right now we so ready not just the outside of this defensive line but the interior of the defensive line as well there are obviously some question marks about the interior of Arizona State's defensive line depthwise is there enough guys is there enough just big bodies up there um that can really continue to elevate Brian Ward's defense it's become clear over the last the last week and a half I would say um that Arizona State's interior the defensive line is really going to hinge on three guys specifically CJ fight who we obviously talk a lot about going into his sophomore season played a little bit last season got bigger got faster really honed in on his pass rush so it's going to be fun to see CJ fight this season J Kanga the Arizona Wildcat transfer he has genuinely been I mean out of all the the coaches talk about Jacob Kanga like he is their son like just so excited so excited to talk about JK literally at all times um so he's gonna have a lot of weight on his shoulders and of course Jeff Clark as well who wasn't at Arizona State last season um he's been an interesting impact transfer thus far in Camp but realistically those are the three guys Eric on the interor of this defensive line that are going to be really key um for Arizona State and we talk about Sam levit and asu's team and the offense will go as he does I think the ASU defense will go as those three guys go I I think that's a good take I I think CJ fight might end up being the best player on this defense when it's all said and done I I think he definitely has a case for that you know you gota actually see him go out there and play take I I I think it's I think there's a chance I I think there's a chance I I think there may be a couple names that I throw out there first but I think that he has at least the potential I think I think Jeff Clark has had a really really good camp he's made some big plays he's forced some fumbles I think that he's going to definitely be one of those guys maybe you don't notice him every single play but every once in a while he's just gonna kind of make that timely he's just so big it'd be hard not to notice him on every play yeah and I'm actually I'm really thrilled about Kango well I remember when he transferred over here a lot of U OFA fans were were talking about who who which is just like hey tell me more about how you don't know about your own team he play he literally played for them last year I know and and I think just like what the coaches are saying from like a person perspective is as well um that's the type of human that they are trying to get here and then also from a physicality perspective yeah it's good when those two things come together I I I think interior defensive line getting your pressure on your quarterback being able to push guys apart and stopping that run game um keeping the other offense off the field you know that's that is the most important part of the game and I'm I'm I think it's those three and I think there are a couple other guys too and again we're just talking about depth in these rooms you can list off names there are guys who could step up and can actually make plays yeah no that's fair house eat Sports um has Derrik yba been tearing it up I heard he was surprising some people yeah he's been remarkable working in the two deep as well rotating in he's I mean I have a tough time believing he's not going to be a part of the travel team um which would be huge for a freshman walk-on right um he's made some serious plays in Fall Camp had a pretty solid spring camp as well um and he's just been super super consistent so definitely a name definitely a name to to keep in mind as the season goes on obviously you don't want anybody to get hurt but that's just kind of the nature of the Beast sometimes it's football guys get hurt um and if that's the case you might see Derrick in some games Lo in the chat y'all sounded exactly like Colorado if we were sounding like Colorado I would tell you that we're going 12 and0 and we're winning the Big 12 Championship like in route to our national championship can I do a Colorado impression if we were Colorado yeah Kenny dillingham's the greatest coach that's ever walked on Earth yeah our entire team is 10 times better the Big 12 doesn't know what's coming and it's an absolute sham to the Le left us off the AP Top 25 I'm going to buy my Kenny Dillingham sunglasses that are come in the mail five months after I ordered them and I'm going to wear them and rock them with pride because we are the best team in the Big 12 but if you say anything different that is actually disrespect yeah okay Dilly Dilly Dilly Dilly I'm here for it I'm here for it I'm also here for you guys to hear what Sam Lev had to say at his first press conference since being named the starter but before he was named the starter kid had to get here in the spring right transfer from Michigan State a young red shirt freshman quarterback definitely had some Sam Leavitt On Being Named the Starter options um in regards to the transfer portal and Arizona State to work with Marcus rooo work with Kenny Dillingham was obviously where he ended up being so when it came to him coming out of the portal just what was that process like what was he looking for he answered those questions today you got to you got to enjoy the moment for sure um you know I probably sat there for you know a few minutes and just really soaked it in and you know just put my put my phone down and sat there on the on the ground just looking at the ceiling and really you know indulging the moment um but you know going forward that was the ultimate plan so if anything gives me you know more juice you know now I'm the guy now I got to hold myself to that standard and now I got to keep that because you know you only stay at this if you perform so um just got to keep going and you know keep getting better to coming out the portal that's your main intention you know finding a school where you know you feel like you're going to develop the best ball so get a shot to you know play as a you know as your first year in the program so coming in here you know I thought I thought I was going to start 100% you know obviously uh got to beat out Jaden and then we brought Jeff in and you know Trenton's been here for a while so uh it's been a process for sure but uh you know I don't know if you really like put a percentage on it it's kind of always come into the uh situation thinking you're going to be the starter I thought I was going to start 100% that's what you want from your quarter you want confidence right we talked about that right we talked about that yesterday how you want him to expect himself to be good enough to start but also Embrace that competition and I think that's what he that's what he said there he's like hey I expected to start but I knew that I had to win in order to get there I had to beat Jaden and obviously Jaden's gone they had to beat Sims as well that that is literally the perfect encapsulation of what you want from somebody because listen like you can be almost humbled to a fault at a certain point if you are a highle athlete as well right you have to be driven by something and that belief oh you know I could start but you know there's a lot of really talented guys no you can believe that everybody else is talented but you should be walking and saying I am the best guy in this room and I'm going to go out and work my ass off to prove it yeah and that is listen that is exactly the mindset and the mentality you need for somebody who's supposed to be leading a team like this as well no you're you're absolutely right we do have a $5 Super Chat from a cats Eric kick your voice up in octave and you can sound like Colorado Mike Luke guys have a good day give me one shot yes we know this the Arizona State sundevils they are the best team they deserve it let me talk about cam scabo a Heisman winner yes yes yes and if you say no oh well you're just a hater don't leave us out the AP Top 25 no Kenny Dillingham best coach in the Big 12 we know this we deserve this Forks up okay thanks thanks guys thanks for sticking along with that one wow it almost feels wrong when I do it now I feel I feel gross for you yeah it's like it I I feel like it like takes over my body like it's him speaking you feel like you're transforming into M luk oh just wait till Halloween oh God that's a tease that is going to be a teas something special for sure so yeah sound the sound bite that you guys heard uh was Sam L obviously talking about being named the starter and coming out of the portal just kind of his expectations about that the quarterback competition and for Sam Lev again this is a Young quarterback that had to take on a blue chip player in Jane rashada who Jan rashada mind you for per reports is struggling mightily uh to make a name for himself at Georgia right now I believe he's the third quarterback on that dep chart yeah um and then you had to beat out a guy like Trent morg who's been here as long as time right always been ready survived a ton of transfer quarterbacks um and then you had to beat out an athlete in Jeff Sims as well who has a lot of playing experience at Nebraska in Georgia Tech so this is this is what you want to hear I think from your redri freshman quarterback is that he believed that could do it the entire time right and kind of going back to that first soundbite you was talking about how Kenny had a conversation with both Sam and Jeff um when the announcement was made but Kenny actually texted Sam and let him know kind of ahead of time that night before and Sam was talking about just like just taking that moment in right like putting his phone down he talked about he was just kind of laying up looking at the ceiling just like what's that LeBron James meeme like smiling CU I can't believe that's what I pict can't believe my life is that's exactly what I picture for for Sam again being such a young guy doing this but coming out of the portal it's not just Sam levit you know that had to convince the the staff to take a chance on him the staff had to do the same so Kenny Dillingham spoke a little bit today just about his first interaction his first meeting with Sam lit and guys it went 6 hours long this is what D had to say about it we have dinner that was my perspective ell C we got dinner guys we've been in here since post lunch and Kenny Dillingham on Sam Leavitt now we have dinner he has to change and but uh no in all seriousness it was it was when I said to myself okay this is a guy cuz it's not just when you bring quarterbacks on campus you're interviewing them just as much as they're interviewing you right when you sit in those meetings and you talk to those guys you're getting a blueprint of what you're going to coach it takes a certain kid to be successful quarterback so when he was in there for six hours and I walked in there at about an hour and like sat in there then I walk in there about an hour5 and about 3 hours then four hours and I'm like this kid still dialed in it matters to him like he loves this round and uh that's a sign of a quarterback that can lead that's that was my impression let's get this holy cow like we won Eric get I'm going to ask you a personal question okay how long was your first date with your wife you want to know yeah like seven and a half hours long good date yeah it was six hour first Kenny Kenny found his football wife yeah I mean they had lunch and dinner yeah like that's pretty much as good as you can go imagine if I was like 15 minutes yeah I mean props to you then man props you um no I listen when you talk to Kenny and you can find somebody who matches his energy like when he came here for our show I felt like we could have talked to him for like three hours and just had him on and obviously he was on a time constraint and so we had to shift some things around he wasn't able to be on the whole show but it was just very easy conversation with him especially when you start talking football and then it's a different level when you're actually talking to a player as well and to know that on a football freak level Sam levit and Kenny Dillingham are like this they're on the same level Le matched Dilly's freak yeah he did he really did and I that is actually probably the biggest green flag out of anything we have heard or seen or talked about Sam levit is that the mentality is on par with the mentality of Kenny Dillingham because what is the reason that we believe in Kenny Dillingham it's the passion it's the there are a lot of there are a lot of smart football guys out there for sure and he is absolutely one of them but what sets him apart is the drive and the care yeah and you can talk about football but if you don't care about it you're not going to talk about it for S hours hey this was a nice lunch I'm going to consider Arizona State I hope you'll consider me have a good one no we're talking about six hours dude like that's a dude you could drive to you could drive to California good like they had Kenny was in there they had lunch they they had to change it was such a long meeting a Royo obviously a part of it as well and it's just again it kind of goes back to what Dilly said like this is our guy this guy loves this stuff sure and that's what you want at every position but I don't think there's a position more than quarterback that you want a guy that is just a football sicko um that again kind of mirrors not just Kenny but the offensive coordinator Marcus Royo now too yeah absolutely and bees with a couple comments in the chat says Sam's arm Talent is NFL level strong arm quick release good touch passes perfect for the scheme listen I I think if everything goes right for him and and he Erik on The Future of Sam Leavitt continues to grow and clean ups up cleans up his mistakes Reigns in that power a little bit as well and continues to be able to move outside of the pocket with great power great responsibility ER I know that we made fun of the I could see them both playing on Sundays type of thing uh but there I don't think that there's a crazy world where where a team is gonna take a shot on Sam levit and if he does well at Arizona yeah we're still so early again that's what I'm saying I'm not gonna put money on it I'm not going to sit up here and guarantee he's going to go and get drafted but I bees is right he does have the uh he does have the arm ability to do that yeah now let's just go see him do it under the lights yeah right because Kenny's had a few guys that have been able to do that Jordan Travis and then of course the the pride and joy The Golden Child Mr Nicks Mr Nicks B Knicks Comparison to Bo Nix Denver Broncos quarterback obviously a quarterback um at Oregon with Kenny Dillingham saw the kind of Rebirth of his career um so there have been times getting the chance to talk to Sam just not not just today but in previous instances where he does bring up Kenny in his conversations um with bone Nick so Sam was asked like just how much the two of them talk about B Knicks this is what Sam had to say me me and coach dillian talked about B buns you know he says I resemble him which which is amazing to hear um you know so I try to watch him play and uh just see how he how he operates you know the different type of um checks and reads he makes in terms of protections is what really separates him and you know that's the level I'm trying to get to so uh just understanding you know starting off the game and uh you know taking what the defense get when the big players open up I mean they both wear number 10 that's all you need that's all you need that's all you need no there's one thing we've learned about ASU quarterbacks the most important thing is what number is a number no in all seriousness Sam Lev bonck have very similar playing Styles I'm not going to sit here and tell you that Sam lit is going to be bonck 2.0 but they do have very similar play styles their athletic quarterbacks um who yes both wear the number 10 very similar stature both have decent arms based off of the scheme you expect to see them kind of just Death By A Thousand Cuts right where we're just going to kind of pick you apart March down the field and take our shots when we can um and if Bo was able to revitalize his career with Dilly at Oregon and Sam obviously coming from Michigan State to Arizona State you're running a similar scheme m right now you may not have necessarily the offensive line talent that you had at Oregon or the ridiculous NFL wide receivers outside on the perimeter but that doesn't mean you still can't show flashes of being that type of guy again I'm not going to sit here and tell you that Sam love it is bonck 2.0 but they do have very similar play Styles and now you have the quarterback whisper the guy who did it for B coaching a guy like Sam L yeah I again it's one of those wait and sees you know we could talk about what could be set up for success and you know maybe this isn't an Oregon roster well not maybe this isn't an Oregon roster but this is a roster that's a lot better than last year this is a roster we've talked about countless and countless and countless times yeah that is talented on almost every single front and there are a ton of weapons for Sam his success is really up to him yeah we believe in the coaches we believe in the running backs we believe in the wide receivers and we believe in the offensive line right and I'm sure not everything is going to go perfect I'm sure there's going to be a lot of adversity that has had to be overcome for this team with this season but at the end of the day I do believe that the the future of Sam levit is in Sam lit's hands and if you're somebody like that and you are exuding confidence like he showed you earlier today and like he showed throughout Camp that's probably exactly where he wants to be and and we'll talk about some more quarterbacks and maybe the history of starting quarterbacks for the last couple of years uh at ASU but first we got to take a quick break here I want to tell you about our friends over at Rugged road I was telling you about my honeymoon trip and how we went to the beach and I'm sorry I know I mean it's okay I trust you okay I trust you okay that's all that's all I need Kyle Kyle Kyle do you trust us not yet yeah no that's fair that's that's fair still kind of new it's still kind of new if you had to pick who you trust more out of the two of us oh boy I'm not picking sides yet yeah yeah uh he says that because it's me and he doesn't want to make you upset he knows you can't handle it listen I've already delivered him safely from Pacing and back I've given him rise I delivered him from Phoenix to back Phoenix to Tempe to back here that's like 15 minutes dude pac's a little further yeah some winding roads took care of them okay shut up see this is why he want to pick sides because he knew that you couldn't handle it look let's talk about the history of opening day quarterback performances at Arizona State maybe something that we can expect to see from Sam levit in 11 days against Wyoming where do you want History of Opening Day QB Performances to start on this list we got three quarterbacks that we're going to hit here we can go in order you we were in a meeting earlier and you look down at my screen and you're like dude I saw you look stats for this guy and I was like what the hell you want to do you want to do that one no I let's go let's go in reverse chronological ORD let's start with last year we'll start with last year course Jane rash George's own right Jane rashada 18 of 31 completed 58% of his passes 236 yards two passing touchdowns of course highlighted by the I believe it was fourth down touchdown pass to Xavier gillery about Midfield gillery obviously had a a awesome celebration then of course you had the giant storm dude that was so cra storm but Arizona State ended up taking down Southern Utah in that game Jaden Rashad it felt still regardless it felt like okay at least in the first half the first half they had us in the first half not gonna lie not gonna lie that you thought like okay we did it we this is the guy yeah you definitely saw building blocks there for sure Lincoln Logs yeah I I I mean there was no reason not to be excited about jayen Rashad now as a team the performance um winning 24 to 21 against the southern Utah Thunderbirds is not the greatest performance like a two hour delay well right and you have to look at before that delay they scored 21 of their 24 points in the first half yeah so you're telling me it wasn't good it wasn't great but it wasn't the worst ever and you could definitely say hey this is a guy with potential he would with those deep shots as well you saw that there was Talent there um I just I do think it's soled by that like two and a half hour long delay especially because I was running the radio broadcast for that and I just had to sit in a room no visual no idea what going show didn't have a lot of energy no it was it was pretty tough sharing in the chat that habo was like a metaphor for last season yeah absolutely and again Jaden tossed it around 31 times right that's a lot for a true freshman quarterback in his first performance will Sam levit have more attempts than Jayden Rashad in any game in the first five weeks more than 31 attempts yes yeah yeah you think so in the first five weeks yeah not combined no yeah I know thank you thank you I I picked up on look let's go to a oh do we call him an Arizona State Legend um I would say no not an Arizona an LSU Legend sure Jen he did win the Heisman Jaden Daniels this is his performance against Kent State back in 2019 completed 62 and a half% of his passes 15 of 24 284 yards through the air three total touchdowns two passing one rushing I don't think you could have a better like just first performance um really as a quarterback back in college football you got the win um nearly 300 passing yards completed a good percent of your passes scored on the ground scored on the air want to talk about thinking you got yourself a guy yeah yeah they had him he was the guy no but that's what I'm saying like there was like that hey there's a lot of hype about this guy let's go out there let's see him actually play and he came in and he delivered I was on the call for that game for our student radio station and uh back when you were just a we lad back when I was just a wee little College radio lad Look at me now Mom look now he's made it I'm I'm sitting next to Anthony tow Tre which I was also I think sitting yeah probably close to you on that day as well yeah uh anyway though I I remember watching this and just in the moment I think we were in break and turning to the person I call the game with um and I was like man he's pretty good yeah not used to this because you're so used to like Hey look it's hype it's hype it's hype it's hype it's hype and then they get here and you're like okay you know you got to work into it really felt like he delivered don't you hate on milkin like that no milk you're calling that's what we used to call him you know he's a SoundCloud rapper now oh I know I'm very aware I was aware when he was first dropping music okay I was tapped in on that okay Green Bay Packers Legend stop it um no I was I I was rightfully so very excited about the Jaden Daniels era but I want to move on from that because now I'm disappointed in thinking about how that ended that's fair that's fair look talk about a real Arizona State leg let's get to we're gonna get the Beast question here in a second because I think it's a really good question but emry Jones emry Jones his brief brief stint at Arizona State and what is one of the worst Arizona State seasons in recent memory just because of the start in the finish of that season and everything that occurred with Herm Edwards being done uh emry Jones definitely regrets his decision to transfer to Arizona State at least I imagine he does but a decent opening day performance against na went 13 of 18 completing 72% of his passes a buck 52 through the air no touchdowns through the air but two rushing touchdowns you knew you were getting a dual threat quarterback in emry Jones completed a good chunk of his passes didn't make really any giant mistakes what did you think of emry Jones first performance at Arizona State like it's fine that's about what I thought it's fine yeah sure cool I remember when he was a when he was announced as the starting quarterback and I was you know getting into the preseason hype and getting excited and then watching him play and it was like okay sure yeah fine I out of these three out of these three I talked and I talked myself into him the least of course house heat Sports I agree says Wilkins was good don't disrespect I've never seen somebody better at hurdling I mean there's some Olympian okay you know what I mean okay let me be let me be dramatic yeah you're so dramatic don't disrespect milkin stop calling him that start calling him the W up% dude oh that's so hard that should be his rap name 2% 2% that kind you let him know because I'm milkins bees jumping over the hate like I'm Wilkins come on that's that is a bar oh my goodness put that on the track right now oh my goodness be's in the chat with a question a little bit earlier if we could just scroll up with Tad saying how should we manage our expectation with guys like Sam and Jordan leads perfectly into my question just what should you expect from Sam not only against Wyoming in week one but really how do you manage those expectations um fans because you focus on potential and this is what I was saying listen Sam Lev is going to need some time to settle in yeah right and if he doesn't then we're having a completely different conversation if that's your expectation then you're happy with it right the expectation should be let's understand what the potential is here let's understand the arm power let's understand the ability to be mobile inside the pocket let's understand the passion the football minded all of that you still have to find time to put that together as a quarterback and we're in a world now where it's like instant gratification and if you don't come in and you perform great then we're going to throw you to the side you can't act like that right now you need to give them time to grow they are going to be facing technically worst caliber teams but they're not facing a high school team right this is going to be his first legitimate full game like hey I'm starting this is my team yeah so I would say get excited about the potential but don't set yourself up to be disappointed if that potential is not realized in G game one yeah that's fair Jordan Tyson same thing you never know what going to come back off of an injury sell yourself on the potential go from there uh Antoine Co in the chat I expect the season similar to 2012 that team go eight and five with bulll win this team goes eight and five with a bulll win we are celebrating if they go again I talked about earlier if they win the Big 12 it's the greatest Zero to Hero if they win eight games and they go bowling phenomenal that's still one of the greatest phenomenal season think about how much everybody was freaking getting excited about Colorado last season and how they ended up you know what I mean like if they end up winning eight games this season we are going to have a lot of [ __ ] to talk and we'll do it oh absolutely look what I have to say and the only thing I really have to say about trying to compare these former ASU quarterbacks and their history in game ones and and what you can expect leave it in the past leave it in the past and that is a play on words for everybody listening and being like yeah well I see what he did there that's for you Eric that's for me leave it in the past okay it Sam L is not those guys he's not emry Jones he's not Jaden Daniels he's Sam lit um and let's see what he can be let's let's let's see him sore among the birds okay um among the southern Utah Thunderbirds wow and on that note guys hit the like button hit the Subscribe button you hit the like button for my a five star review wherever you get your podcast that is going to do it for today's episode of the phnx sundevil show Eric Camp ends
