>> NJ TRANSIT'S FAIR. HOLIDAY STARTS TOMORROW. GOVERNOR PHIL MURPHY MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT ON GOOD DAY, NEW YORK. COMMUTERS WILL BE ABLE TO RIDE THE RAILS FOR FREE IN A GESTURE TO MAKE AMENDS FOR A SUMMER FILLED WITH CANCELLATIONS AND DELAYS. NEW JERSEY DATA SHOWS SO FAR THIS YEAR, JUST OVER 85% OF TRAINS HAVE BEEN ON TIME. DATA SHOWING A MAJORITY OF THOSE SERVICE ISSUES ARE CAUSED BY EITHER MECHANICAL ISSUES OR BY AMTRAK. FOX FIVE'S MICHELLE ROSS HAS OUR STORY. >> AFTER A MISERABLE SUMMER OF COMMUTING ON NJ TRANSIT, THE FAIR HOLIDAY BEGINS ON MONDAY. RIDERS WILL RIDE FOR FREE ON ALL NJ TRANSIT BUSSES AND TRAINS FROM AUGUST 26TH TO SEPTEMBER 2ND. >> IF IT'S FREE, I'M DEFINITELY GOING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE. SO, SHOUT OUT TO NEW JERSEY TRANSIT. >> I WAS LIKE, IS THIS A JOKE? I WASN'T SURE IF IT WAS REAL OR NOT. >> THIS COMES AFTER THOUSANDS OF COMMUTERS TOLERATED THOSE DREADED DELAYS AND CANCELLATIONS. >> IT'S A PAIN IN THE YOU KNOW WHAT? >> AND HOW FRUSTRATING WERE THOSE ISSUES THIS SUMMER? >> ARE YOU KIDDING? >> VERY. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE TO GET SOMEWHERE AND YOU LOOK UP AND IT'S LIKE, OH, THE TRAIN IS DELAYED. THIS TRAIN IS CANCELED. YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT TRAIN. >> NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR PHIL MURPHY ANNOUNCED THE FREE WEEK ON GOOD DAY NEW YORK. HE ALSO SAID AMTRAK APPLIED FOR $300 MILLION IN FEDERAL GRANTS TO FIX THE OVERHEAD WIRES. >> WE HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH AMTRAK. SO WHILE TWO THIRDS OF OUR DELAYS PLUS OR MINUS ARE DUE TO AMTRAK INFRASTRUCTURE, WE HAVE A VERY GOOD WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM. >> NOW, NEW JERSEYANS ARE MAKING PLANS. >> WE'RE GOING TO BE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF IT. I TOLD FRIENDS OF MINE, AND WE'RE GOING TO GO DOWN THE SHORE. WE MIGHT GO TO SPRING LAKE OR MAYBE BAY HEAD. >> NOW, THE TIMING OF THIS FREE WEEK DOESN'T GO UNNOTICED. IT'S ONE OF THE SLOWEST WEEKS FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OF THE YEAR. IT'S THE LAST WEEK OF AUGUST, RIGHT BEFORE THE LABOR DAY HOLIDAY. BUT FROM THE MANY COMMUTERS THAT WE SPOKE WITH, THEY TELL US THEIR MINDSET IS TAKE WHAT YOU CAN GET. YOU DON'T LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH. >> THEY COULD HAVE SAID, FINE, YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT GOING TO BE FREE. YOU GOT TO PAY IT. THEY'RE GIVING YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO RIDE FOR FREE. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. >> IT'S DEFINITELY AN INTERESTING WEEK TO PICK, BUT I MEAN, I'M STILL GOING TO WORK, SO I GUESS IT'S NICE FOR ME. I FEEL IF THERE'S FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN THAT COULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS, THAT MIGHT NOT HAVE BECAUSE OF THE COST. >>
