Upset at Darlington shakes up the playoff field | NASCAR Inside the Race: Full Show

the big move from Chase Brisco brisco's spectacular pass for the lead was only part of the story we'll break it all down next one lap at the Darlington Raceway to determin it everything on the line welcome to a new episode of NASCAR inside the race presented by Consumer Cellular I'm Travis Peterson crew chief of the 34 car and I'm Drew blicker for crew chief of the 10 well Darlington uh regular season finale lived up to the hype a lot of excitement a new winner yeah it it was exciting we we probably thought a pass winner might win the race they didn't Travis we were next to each other on Pit Road and on Monday we're next to each other again to talk about it let's dive into what the uh 14 did to win the race yeah that'll be a lot more fun than our nights I'm sure the 14 car didn't just do something crazy at the end to win the race he made an amazing pass we're going to dive into that but he was up front all night long yeah I think if people looked at the box score this morning they thought how did Chase Brisco win this race not a car that's usually up front continuing for wins but Chase had a great car qualified third like you see kind of stayed up front most of the day and actually after the first stage him and Kyle Larson were the best two cars all night yeah I mean if you just look at this right here right we got a line at 10th but he pretty much never is outside the top five for the entire race and and that's huge so let's talk about that final lap pass because that's really what we're here for but we did want to highlight that he didn't just fluke Win It by something crazy at the end that's right so we're g to start here with the one car staying out because this sets up his dramatic pass so right here what we say eight Laps on tires yeah eight laps and you see everybody come to Pit Road right here you see the one Ross Chastain he has to win to get into the playoffs he's kind of Fallen too far back in points needs a win eight Laps on tires said I'm going to gamble Phil surgeon and that group said we're going to pull that's is this is our only opportunity to maybe get up front and steal a win here and I think we were counting it earlier you know there's 12 cars behind even if you get rights I don't know if you come out in the lead that that's a long way back so go For Broke do what you got to do to win the race because we saw earlier the 23 and 17 were going to settle it between themselves on points if it weren't for an outside winner Travis we'll pick it up here at the chws the one car remember stayed out and the top Lane's been dominant all night long and what you see here Ty Gibbs way back in fourth or fifth decides I'll take the outside go up behind the one car he'll go to where he's going to fall the guy with old tires all these guys that got tires are saying we don't want to restart behind the one car he's got eight Laps on his stuff we feel we'll go by him so it's a big shakeup of what Lane people chose here later in the race yeah if we back up here this is this is very abnormal right we we talked about the top being dominant and then all of a sudden three cards in a row choose the bottom it's been flip-flopped all night long that's right the Top Lane gets such a better launch that's why Ross took it but nobody wants to take take the spot behind him so so if we look forward now to the actual pass Ross is in control on the restart Ross is leading through turn one and this is where we're going to start off looking at it one interesting thing here after I went back and watched this restart right here where it stops if Kyle Bush got a little bit better restart and was about right here Chase Brisco isn't going to be able to make the move that he makes he's able to get high behind Ty Gibbs and get a huge run down the backstretch conversely yeah yeah and so you're talking about that and the five car he has the opposite problem because the 54 is here the five can't go high everybody wants to be high off the top of two you build that run down the backstretch there's more banking everybody just is faster up there right the five cannot unwind the wheel and get back to the gas because he has to guard against the 54 but the 14 does as we go forward you see Chase Brisco get almost to the wall and get a huge run down the backstretch right here Kyle Larson's racing T Ty Gibbs Chase Brisco takes the opportunity to go low yep he sends it in there three wide and I think there's a little bit of the five not trying to shove it in three wide on two guys who need to win right there knowing that he's probably going to be the guy that gets used up yeah it it takes Kyle Larson's line away rash Shain on the old tires is on the outside of him Chase Brisco has an opening to take the lead yeah so we paused it right here because the move the 14 makes when he comes back from here he's up here at The High Line and he abruptly changes lanes and gets down here I don't think the five or 54 were ready for it I think they were worried about each other and coming off the corner and noty trying to crash and and they lose so much speed that the 14 has this big move the other thing I think's going on is the five and the 54 and the one they're decelerating they're on the braks they're slowing down to try to make the corner to set themselves up for the best opportunity so Chase come so low so fast on him he has so much more speed like you can see here he almost clears the five get in the corner and then like you said Kyle Larson's Racing for a championship wants to win the points he doesn't want to put himself in Jeopardy and it kind of with the one car on the outside of him pinches his corner to where he can't get a run off that allows Chase to get that run off turn four and it really just showed you know the one car on his old tires he was trying to throw Hill Mary but even in control of the race in the lead with two wide behind him he's just not fast enough to go against these tires in the Premier Lane you know you would want to be at the Top If You Could right now but the good the new tires are so much of an advantage you can kind of go where they're not so let's jump on b 14 car watching from his angle because it's pretty exciting there you see him get behind the 54 a little bit and run up high you actually mentioned it right here let's stop this before we get too far the 54 has a huge moment off the top of two I'm going to zoom in on that right there watch his left rear and the what happens as he comes off the corner and bounces huge bounce big puff of smoke definitely hurts his momentum or else he might have had a chance to go clear the five car yeah these rub blocks underneath the car Travis he's probably rubbing those since it was white smoke um that's usually that's pretty common on on low air pressure off turn two at Darlington but that momentum you see the five did not hit that gets a little bit B of better momentum down the backstretch but the 54 did so Tai either had to check out of the gas real quick because it it shot him shot him sideways or if he did stay in the gas his back tires were almost off the ground yep so now he's dragging the five back 14 gets his big run look how aggressive this move is almost Clips the fives bumper gets down in there and now he's in clean air at the front he can see that Checkered Flag he's going for it yeah those new tires are are being used at the bottom clearing the one car and it sets himself up for the cheer flag so I think at this point you know we knew the 14 was in control but there's another caution yeah uh sets up some more interesting pitch strategy we're going to jump to the eight car now because he's in third after this thing goes forward for a little bit and he's the first car to peel off yeah the a car needs a win just like that one did he's doing the opposite this time he's saying if these guys behind me come down Pit Road he's got a spotter his crew chief people talking to Kyle he's looking out the mirror and what Kyle didn't want to be Kyle didn't want to be the last one on old tires so when he saw everybody behind him start peeling off you can see him make the late move trying to get down this yellow line doesn't really mean anything that's a driver reference Kyle has to get down before this orange box and before the line there on Pit Road which he does easily but you can see Ros chest tain's inside of him the rule that NASCAR mandates is single file under yellow flag pit stops so Ross has to give the position back a little bit but Kyle looking out out of his mirror didn't want to be the last car uh on old tires so he wanted to make sure he gave himself a shot yeah like you said you see you know 1 two three four guys he's seeing come in his mirror but it's also going to be interesting because there's another one two three four of them out here that do stay out the big thing is that like you said the one had to fall in line the eight is now coming down in the lead he's going to come off the first guy on tires and that's the spot you want to be that's right which is going to set him up for the last restart so let's before we get into that last restart we're going to jump into the eight day because really we didn't think he was a huge Factor throughout the the race you can see here the five and 14 they're up front all day just like we talked about the eight really does some different pitch strategy through stage three but doesn't really become relevant till late yeah I think Rand Bernett and Kyle Bush had an average day for them and an average day wasn't going to get them into the playoffs so they had to do something a little different and what you see with the eights pit strategy is he pits at a little different times than the rest of the field he was good enough to stay on the lead lap which they didn't have to have a concern about that but he goes longer almost every stop especially in the third stage he's kind of playing his race out a little differently than the five and the 14 and some of the guys in the top 15 yeah and unfortunately you know up to this point it's not really working for him he's riding around 10th he tries to go along he's hoping for a longer run to the end that caution comes out it pins him he hasn't used his tires to get back up through but then he pits here when the other guys don't they all pit here and then he pits again late he said you know what the only way I'm going to do get this done is to you have fresh tires and you could see it from lap one with with the eight car they were on a little different strategy than most trying to make some magic you know they were running 12th 15th somewhere in that range that's not good enough for them right now so let's pick it up from this uh last restart and we're going to start with the 14 car and we'll jump back to the eight so you highlighted it we're closing it on the zone and watch right here huge bump by Christopher Bell Chase brisco's future teammate that launches him it almost looks like you said Travis that he break checks the field cuz his launch is so great compared to the five car we talked about it earlier with Ross Chastain and everybody picking the top versus the bottom the top launch is better normally but this is pretty extreme and a lot of that comes from that push from the 20 car yeah he's kind of slowly coming up in the zone the five's trying to creep on his door just like everybody does at the restarts and Chase does an amazing job he takes this hit from the 20 and immediately mashes the gas uses that inertia gets out clear and now really it's his race to win yeah a little bit of that comes from the 41 being behind the five teammates would Chase Brisco doesn't really help Kyle Larson as much as the the help that chase got for sure and at this point like we said 14 in clean air it's his race to lose so let's go back on this though because now we want to talk about the eight car we were talking about how he becomes relevant he's a long ways back I think we talked about in the choose Zone he comes in ninth and getting back to the beginning of this restart here he is restarting seventh the bottom line doesn't get a very good restart but just want to make sure we Circle them the Eight's way back here on those fresh tires and the only way these fresh tires are going to work Travis like like like you know he's got to get to fourth or fifth before they they come off turn two he's got to clear some of these guys to get him some cleaner air yeah so we'll watch him real quick from this angle then we'll jump on board with him because it's pretty exciting but he goes right to three wide immediately he just keeps going lower he said I need clean air I got the tires and he just takes unlike Daytona last week you can use the entire Racetrack and he used most of it getting into turn one yeah no double line rule this problem here so let's watch it from on board with Kyle here because there's another interesting point right here like you said Travis the rule is you cannot change lanes until the start Finish Line everybody sees the start Finish Line right there he cannot move out from behind Brad kazlowski until he passes that line he's starting to shade there about a car length before if we back it up just a little bit slower he's right there kind of center of his car at the headlight you can start seeing him creep down but he doesn't do it doesn't do it and he goes for it I mean it's gray but he gets away with it for sure and we go forward and he's in he's in the spot he needs to be yeah he needs to to to make moves he needs to go where they're not that's why he chose the bottom to move up rows not only that but to get to the bottom be able to get inside these guys new tires are a huge advantage on restarts so you can go where they're not for about five or six laps and he uses it to that Advantage for sure yeah we're going to watch it a fast forward like we did the red tires at Richmond because that's what new tires at Darlington feel like that's right they're really good for four or five laps and he takes advantage of that and gets to second place in those four or five laps fairly easily yeah Kyle Larson one of the best cards all day I mean you just drove by him like he was standing still gets up here little bit more struggle with the 20 you can see that you know the tires are starting to equalize and that's what happens here is Brisco with the Clean Air eight car now in position with the tires we're going to have to look at what happens in the final few laps yeah Brisco used those first four or five laps to get far far enough away and then what really happens is with 10 to go five to go Brisco hits his marks perfectly yep so we're going to jump all the way in we saw you know final 10 15 laps eight cars trying to run them down he starts to close the gap and now it gets to the point where he's going to fight dirty air and um chase down the 14 car yeah 1015 laps the tires are starting to equalize a little bit um Kyle Busch isn't making the moves on the bottom like he was early in the Run he needs to go to the premier Lane which is up against the wall the problem with that is you're three or four car links behind Chase Brisco who's in that same Lane and it's really difficult two laps on tires older for Chase Brisco but clean air they kind of kind of offset each other the eight was making in the bottom work and you could see every time he was closing a tenth or two in three and four the problem was he just didn't have the lane versatility in one and two to do anything different here we take the white you're going to see when they go in the corner the 14's been doing this all night long he goes in there he Dives it to the bottom eight car tries to follow him he just he just can't get the run off that he needs to get close enough cuz really at this point we've talked about it guys have made moves from here his teammate all that controversy made a move from this far back Kyle does not dive it in there he goes for it Brisa drives it in deep but he just doesn't get close enough yeah Kyle needs to be one or two car links closer so this move right here where you drive in super deep on the bottom and at least get next to Chase and he's not able to do it and Chase doesn't hit the wall like he did the previous flap going through three and four super clean through there and comes on with win there it is huge win for steuart hos racing your organization yeah Travis that was great for steuart hos racing and Chase Brisco to punch their ticket to the playoffs but in other news we had two regular season Champs we'll explain that next so Travis we know darlington's super demanding for 500 miles on a healthy driver Tyler reic on the other hand had a stomach bug not only did he fight through that 500 miles at Darlington he also had a fight off Kyle Larson to win the regular season Championship yeah and it was settled by one point so everything mattered that's the thing we're highlighting right here yeah you see three drivers right here all three of them are super important in the play of this Championship that one point that Tyler reic beat Kyle lson by Chase ell had a hand in that yeah so let's go jump on and watch that pass this is five laps to go in the race the 45 is actually catching the nine and we saw it was only one point margin on that last indicator so if it was a tiebreaker the five wins the tiebreaker based on his number of wins in the season yeah crew chief Billy Scott spotter Nick pay I'm sure they're telling reic you need one more spot reck gets that spot from him and that's enough to win the regular season Championship he gets that run down the hill he's going to get the nine car like we said four or five laps to go in the race that one point is what sett for him yeah we've seen Tyler reck's owner you know on his flu game do magical things and and I think reic at the end of this race was doing the same thing you know he's been sick and you see him falling back throughout the race and not having a good day and all of a sudden there at the end he pulls it together when it countes so speaking of that flu game here here's what they had to do on Pit Road I was joking earlier watching the clip it looks like me and you at our house when we're sick you're going in your medicine cabinet you're grabbing saltine crackers you're doing everything you can just to try to feel a little bit better and and what you see here Travis is probably that the trainer for 2311 Atrium health is there to help them say this is what you need to give him put in his water bottle hand him these kind of uh this this medication to try to settle his stomach to get him through the day so it was definitely a team effort to get this championship and Not only was there adversity on the track and him being sick and that being part of the problem he couldn't even get the pills they talked about it over the radio he got a hold of the Tums I think it was were okay but then they had to go to this water bottle shake it up and put all the medicine in it just so he could actually get some of the meds yeah t Tyler battled through a lot they were trying to help him out every Pit Stop you saw the car keep fading and during the race I wasn't realizing what was going on I thought his car must have had a problem until afterwards and then I went back and watched and saw he was actually physically not feeling feeling great so we looked at the regular season points total Tyler reck battles through all that wins the drivers championship for the regular season but that wasn't the only story there's an owner's Championship we're going to look at that right here Kyle Larson actually wins that one by a decent margin because what we all forgot is he missed running the 8500 he didn't go to the Cook 600 didn't get those points so he did not get those points but his team did that's right Rick Hendrick Cliff Daniels everybody on that five car they collected points all year long uh Kyle Larson took one of those races off since he didn't start the race so I'm sure Mr hendrik everybody over at Hendrick Motorsports groups take are taking great pride in winning that owner regular season owner championship and honestly that's what pays all the money at the end of the year we celebrate the driver they get all the Glory but the owner's points that's where NASCAR pays out for the for the the money fund at at the end of the season we talk about um the owner Championship being what pays you think Justin all's on the phone with Rick right now he probably he probably is there might be a Tahoe or something waiting in his driveway if they can seal the deal about the final few guys who actually made it in yeah Travis you see here the cut line right there we thought three were going to make it in on points probably going into the weekend and we thought Chris busher and Bubba Wallace were going to battle for that final cut line but lo and behold Chase Brisco kind of steals the show from him moves that down to where only two get in on points Martin Truex with the early wreck had a decent cushion going into the weekend all of a sudden that got knocked down and he just barely sque by yeah for a few weeks now we've talked about the bubble being the one and the 23 then the 23 and the 17 well here every time we've we've teased it now it jumped up one more Notch and Martin trck only made it in by six a couple weeks ago he was 70 some points to the good we talked about he had had a catastrophic day well lap two that's what happened exactly and he got a little lucky cuz Chris brusher I think we all decided was probably going to get stage points throughout this race his teammate won the previous race at Darlington the unfortunate thing for that 17 car was they ran around 10 the 12th all day not getting enough stage points he got one in the first stage if he would have been able to get a few more stage points that would have put a lot of pressure on that 19 yeah when he only had one after the end of stage two that's when TRX was locked in it kind of became between him and Tai Gibbs who thought it was going to be fine he was third up on one of those restarts we watched earlier but then he got in one of those wrecks and man if he didn't make minimum speed and he lost a couple more spots he didn't get the nine stage points he had he would have been battling a lot tighter than that 12 with Chris Pusher look at this bubble 26 races in any race AG points any race another spot or two really would have shook this up yeah you you think about all the times you could have scored more points uh whether it be a Speedway a road course an oval where you you could have made a different decision on a late race restart and get three or four points here in a spot that you didn't really think mattered 10 or 12 weeks ago and it comes down to this every single year yep and that sets the field so this is what we're looking at right here we got the whole field for the playoffs where the reset and man we got the bubble again three-way tie at all zeros right there that's right you know what I think is really interesting is we we kind of thought Miracle Man here Harrison burton all of a sudden he goes from the bottom of the list in points and everything and a win last week at Daytona all of a sudden he jumped over Martin Truex and Ty Gibbs who have had great years uh haven't had that win though so Harrison's put himself in an opportunity to go out here and maybe make some noise in the next few weeks yeah we saw on the other graphic earlier in the show he has like 300 and some points a bunch of these guys in this field have double that yes but right now none of that matters that's right new season begins next week that's right you see how tight it is you know obviously Kyle Larson Christopher Bell Tyler reick have a little bit of an advantage up here but it's there's so much movement that can happen and it's going to happen you know lapto laap when we head to Atlanta well Dre you mentioned Atlanta coming up going to be chaos of a Speedway forger strong at the bottom of the cut line and the guy only one to the good who won that race in an amazing photo finish going to be a lot to tune into on Sunday the cup series first race of the playoffs Sunday at 300 p.m. Eastern on USA [Music] ni
