rhs Chelsea flower [Music] show it's day four here at rhs Chelsea and despite the unpredictable weather the flowers in the gardens are lifting everyone's Spirits they are we've got top tits from helping your garden coke with too much rain how to grow the perfect herbs and ideas for floral designs to impress your friends and family this summer [Music] hello and welcome to the rhs Chelsea flower show 2024 the showr is packed full of people enjoying the gardens and the plants and we're up here and we can get a real View and sense of what's going on and there's a bars and people taking everything in definitely the show grounds are enormous but there's hidden gems in every single part of it exactly and it's not just the show ground that's packed true so is the show coming up it's Thursday but our Intrepid team of experts aren't done yet on their mission to get us all gardening this summer all week Toby's been showing us how to handle some of our most common Garden challenges today he's helping us be a little bit Greener if you want to be kinder to the planet in your garden but don't know where to start I got some quick and easy ways that you can make a difference plus Mark showing you how to choose the perfect tree for your outdoor space and today it's about the trees that bring a little bit extra and in part four of our beginners guide to house plants Francis has the fun bit it's time to get creative styling house plants has come a long way from just popping a pot on your window sill I'll have tips and tricks on how you can show them off to their [Music] best but first we've been exploring some of the most most aspirational Gardens this week as we hunt out our Chelsea dream spaces today we're celebrating the spaces that may be small but are certainly beautiful and I've picked out this one it's incredible it's the Tommy's Cuisine balcony garden and it's a Foodies Heaven it's packed full of Edibles which I adore you are going to love this you know what normally when you visit a friend you bring flowers but you really don't need to here you don't need to bring anything cuz everything's here it's brilliant this has got such a rustic feel and I love these quirky elements of bookcase plus this old vintage uh Library ladder which I need to find at home and but it's got all these edible things like we've got a fig tree here there's a fig growing on this so literally nearly everything here is edible blueberries wow they'll ripen soon there's a hazelnut tree as well and if you're into cooking like I am uh we've got some parsley and some fennel to you've got a good track record when it comes to cooking did you win a massive competition never like to talk about Master Chef Master Chef yeah you see but the thing I love most on this Garden which you will think is incredible is the craftsmanship and attention to detail now all these plants up here these herbs once they're watered the water will come down here onto this rain chain and once the water hits the copper it comes down here and releases a natural repellent so you can sit in this private space and not get bitten by mosquito that's even better so you're fed you can enjoy it and you've got a beautiful Vista as well yeah so clever what's not to love the fact that they can take a tree is so impressive really good right what are you going to show me okay you ready yeah I'm going next door cuz I have selected a beautiful balcony Gard it is my dream Garden come on go when we talk about small gardens you know balconies and containers you sort of have one image in your mind don't you and then you walk along here and it dispels that because these are small gardens in themselves they are quite extraordinary really really extraordinary and also small yet inspiration giving you ideas if you don't have that V Space yeah now if you want color and personality and charm just come and have a look at my dream space here Angelica welcome to my jungl balcony Garden wow you actually feel like you are in the Amazon rainforest here beautiful is I've never seen anything like it and it is inspired by the designers travels their jungle Adventures what I think is so wonderful about this is how they've gone beyond the usual size of a balcony and it is like a canopy just standing here today you're looking up through them for the light to come filtering through but then keeping to the jungle theme look we have a jungle floor I really love this it's so special there's a lot of things going on here yeah it's got character it's got charm but it is huge on personality and you got the planting over here we've got the water feature but if I can just draw your attention to this back wall this is all recycled paper it's really durable bound with resin sustainable but if you look up at the edges there's a bat box up there thought has gone into encouraging Wildlife back into the garden there lots of little secrets hidden yeah in this jungle and keeping to your foodie theme with your balcony Garden the stirum there You' using those in the salads oh very good A little test for you yeah so if you're sitting here in the middle of a city or a town you'd have to think twice wouldn't you you'd have to pinch yourself because you really do feel you're transported world I feel it's true truly magical now if you don't have any outside space then house plants could be the answer for you all this week we've been giving you some fantastic tips and today France is going to demonstrate how you can show them off to the max a plant in a park can be a thing of beauty but by styling our house plants with some creativity and Imagination we can really begin to weave them into the fabric of our homes [Music] this is the in the garden house plant studio and it's maximalist in here which means more is more is more it's full of plants and it's full of ideas for styling your house plants everywhere you look you see something new now upcycling and recycling is a real theme here which is also really good for saving you some money so there's tea caddies there's enamel wear there's a bread bin all filled with plant pots you can also find those things all over the place in mark and junkyards for Fairly cheap you may even have some lying around already so it's a good way of saving you some money and something else they've done here is they've covered the plant pots with moss so you don't see the plastic pot you can just see this beautiful styling around the plants and it's a really nice way of making it look age and like it's been there for a very long time and when you come in here you could just take a few ideas or you could take all of these ideas and really cram your house with an indoor jungle too [Music] a hanging basket for house plants Is A really lovely way of bringing them up to eye level all you need to do is put a hook in the ceiling and then hang it and you can use lovely cascading plants to accentuate the height but just make sure that the hook is strong enough because when there are plants and water in the basket it can get really heavy and one of the most clever things in here is this shelving unit now it's quite common to put house plants on the shelves but often they're in dark Shady corners and the shelves themselves give even more shade so all they' done here is add some LED lighting strips to the shelves and it turns a dark and Shady Corner into a real feature very simply and fairly cheaply some warm and sheltered balconies can be like extend iions of your home so you can fill them with little mini house plant Gardens and I love these ones they're full of succulents which makes them really happy because they'll all grow well together if you do this and fill one container with lots of plants make sure they all like the same conditions and the same soil type there's a big one a medium one and a small one so something for any size of balcony but do remember that every balcony will have a weight limit so bear that in mind every time you add another pot what I Al really like is these Gardener SS filled with Spanish moss it's just a nice nod to what you can do to be a bit quirky as is this and if you're feeling very creative you could do something like it a mannequin that's covered in Moss and then filled with more air plant I think she's pretty good thanks frany some great tips there and later on in the show I'll be meeting the winning designer of the best house plant studio now our unpredictable weather has been challenging even the most seasoned of gardeners recently and this week our garden experts are helping you handle the climate extremes yesterday we looked at the issues created by excessive heat and today if lots of rain is your problem James Wong has some clever ways to help your garden cat better this year has been the wetest spring since records began and an astonishing 1 in8 British Gardens has been flooded now when you come to Chelsea it can kind of feel like an other world where everyone has the perfect plot the ideal space but what I love about the flood resilience Garden is it's just packed with really ingenious solutions to creating the most beautiful garden in one of the most challenging spots possible places that are prone to flooding one of the simplest ways you can manage excess water in your garden is just by disconnecting your downpipe you're going to stop the water that's on your roof from flowing into the drainage system and instead you can install a water Bud the way that this works is it captures the excess rainfall from your roof flows in the guttering above me down through these chains and filling up this tank one of the few things that we know we can rely on on with climate change is unpredictability and this design helps sort that out too one of the best things that you can do to help mitigate blood risk is simply by using less hard Landscaping this allows the rain to soak into the soil and be taken away instead of flooding whole areas now this Garden does this ingeniously because even the hard Landscaping it does have has gaps in it to allow that water through [Music] this incredibly dense planting just looks so tranquil I feel like I'm having my brain massaged but it isn't just aesthetic the more plants you have the more physical barriers you have to that waterers flow and of course underground you have more Roots helping draw it up I love how this Garden uses a Swale so an open naturalistic dip to drain the water into this Central Reservoir right next to the water level you have a Primula which is evolved to grow with its root constantly in water but only a meter away you have borderline desert plants it is incredible that you can have the two plants within a meter of each other and it's all thanks to some clever engineering this Garden is is absolutely packed with really intelligent solutions better managing the water that falls on your property to take pressure off Drainage Systems is one of the few things that you can personally do to help reduce the pollution of our rivers and seas Thanks James some great ideas there now here in the great Pavilion Growers from around the world have gathered to show off simply the best flowers and foliage you'll see anywhere we've been tapping into the expertise to find out the best way to grow some of our own favorite plants today is all about herbs and this is the display from the kitchen Garden plant Center and I'm joined Now by Neil Jones hello pleas to meet you Angelica pleased to meet you too this is great I love herbs lots of people love grow them in their own garden but what should you consider before you start planting we plant what we like to eat basically so if you enjoy salad crop you'll plant things like these um red vein s or you can plant plant the Shives which all look pretty in your garden also choose your right aspects if you got a window box or you got a sunny position or a balcony you can choose the plants to suit yourself so if you've got things like your thyme or mint for example you want to keep contained think about seasonality as well uh things like mint can be all season and you can do things in a window box by putting lights on inside um so basically seasonality of what you what you one thing I've through research found is that you should think about your garden and the soil that really needs to be taken into account doesn't it absolutely so aspects if you're on a balcony top floor um with the wind if you're down in Coral it's a little bit wet but milder as you can get away of many more plants uh if you're up north you won't get away of as many plants as you get D sou it's right aspect to grow the plants and things will be very different in a different aspect even in your garden you can create micro climates to grow plants and that's one of the great things about growing herbs or any Edibles and also look at that they look amazing don't they yeah cuz herbs are very functional but you can make them look beautiful and choose the right on flowers as well so this is some time here but this is another sort of time yeah so this is compact time this one it's in flower vist at the moment um so we use it from the the flower shows yeah it's all edible so you just chop it off and we can put it in that cooking and we can it's anti septic as well so all the bees love it and it's just so uh it's just so wonderful isn't it amazing and also I guess you should think about what you like eating and grow the herbs that you're going to use regularly so you don't waste them that's right so we've got the red vein soril for example down here which is uh in ad dog family Rix this one you just cut and come again yeah and you can put it with fish or salads basically yeah and you were talking about mint you can throw that in a majito you can indeed yeah thanks so much for that Neil now we are lucky enough to have some of the finest floral artists in Britain exhibiting in the great Pavilion now while some have entered the florist of the year award others are flexing their creative muscles in a different category which really lets their imagination run wild Chris bavin went to take a [Music] look I'm here amongst all the amazing floristry installations the creativity on display is [Music] incredible and what's great about this category it really gives young florists a chance to make their Mark I'm here with course manager Jane and young florist Katherine hello hi oh has it sunk in yet no does it feel real no it hasn't sunk in it's it's amazing to have seen this design really come into fruition after such long hard work seven months in total and how important is it to give young florists a chance to do this sort of thing here at Chelsea at Chelsea in the great Pavilion in the great Pavilion it's wonderful a wonderful showcase for young florists and you you're you're you're very young are you 21 if you don't mind me saying 21 yes I'm a master student at Mor moral College I've been studying for 5 years in total um s studing at 16 as a school Leever and 17 I was working in the industry so to have made this journey that just 21 is is really fantastic she must be one of the youngest florists to have exhibited here she is we I teach students from 16 up to 70 but to get to master level level five at Katie's age is fantastic and you're obviously doing a great job at tutoring thank you it's a journey of life like our display and and this is the reward so so well done so tell me you said it's a journey of Life talk talk me through the the installation so it's called Awakening um and it's about the beginning middle and end of everyone's life so this here is emergence so it's spring soft pale pastel flowers through into abundance which is summer um celebration of life and weddings and round to Decay which is the Autumn our design very much M mirrors the um the the journey that all of us Forest see every day within the industry from from births to weddings and then eventually to funerals it's it's very much representative of our work day today amazing I've just wondering whereabouts on this journey I am I think I might be in in between these two edging closer towards that one but it's amazing than it's beautiful congratulations well done and enjoy the rest of your week here at Chelsea thank you oh wow I really love this one but all these exhibits have been put under the scrutiny of rhs Ambassador Simon Lys we captured the moment Nikki and Simon awarded the winner [Applause] the floristry installations are looking fantastic this year so much creativity on display still to come on the rhs Chelsey flower show and event supported by the n in Somerset floral designer Hazel Garder will be showing us how to make creative floral displays of our own plus Toby will be in the hot seat for today's Chelsea Clinic when he'll be answering your gardening questions and he'll have a budget busting hack that will make you think twice about what you're putting in the bin I'm here on the freedom from torure Sanctuary Garden that's been getting an awful lot of attention and you really can see why it's got a very powerful story behind it and to help tell that story I'm joined by ha cultural therapist Wendy gy congratulations on the garden Wendy it's beautiful isn't it it so pleased to be here you walk in and you just feel like it's arms around you but tell us more about that piece of therapy in itself isn't it it's just wonderful the garden was designed for the people we work with at Freedom from torture who've all obviously experienced traumatic events before they came to us from their homelands and um so the garden has a lot of things that be familiar that are Homeland planting it's got soft edges it's got curved edges it's you can smell it there are some lovely plants that are therapeutic in themselves you can stop and smell the lavender smell the pine I love the bread oven behind you the bread oven yes incorporating something like that why is that important well um at Freedom from torture we also have um a bread group where we break bread together and this whole garden is coming back to our offices at in Finsbury Park Horticultural therapy how different is it from therapy that we hear of dayto day because I'm thinking when someone goes to see a therapist there'll be in in a room in an office block perhaps yeah but this is very very different oh Nikki that's a really good question I'm a psychologist by background I spend a lot of time in Consulting rooms and you can do a lot of efficient work there it feels very different working outside being in the outside you can feel calm and safe and it has um a much more slower Pace to it a pace where people can develop well-being in a much more meaningful way we lead all of us such busy busy lives what advice would you give us I mean you've mentioned some of the plants and things here but what advice would you give us that we can incorporate you know got a busy life and I can't I don't know where to start yes 10 5 minutes something like that what can we do well I think in terms of your garden go for the herbs go for the Edibles go for the things that smell good go things that give you pleasure actually so if there's a particular rose bush that you love get that and you can spend 5 minutes looking at it and smelling it and enjoying it it's important that Gardens should make you feel good and wherever you are town city Village take five 10 minutes devote that time to you look at your surroundings think about what you're looking at bit tree bit of shrub someone else's front garden yes and I suppose be in the moment that Cal brings the shoulders down never mind how busy you are I think it's important that people give themselves that and that you don't have to have a garden for it you can just stop and look at your neighbor front Gardens and just enjoy seeing those plants and enjoy that and just enjoy doing things something that gives me absolute pleasure chickpea plants I love growing them I grow them on my allotment Little Pleasures exactly exactly they have meaning for me thank you very much indeed thank you thank you now many of us are Keen to be a little greener in our Gardens but it can be very difficult to know where to start here's Toby with easy ways to inspire us all to be kinder to the planet green ideas are in the WFT and weave of all the Chelsea show gardens some are old some are new and some recycled materials from the past now the thing about recycled materials I love them because they often come with a story this is the Burma skincare Garden in the middle of it is this Serpentine Timber deck path and the wood it's made from well it's had a very interesting past these planks used to be on limouse Jetty it's made from Green Heartwood it's incredibly tough and longlasting wood in fact it's the timber used on Shackleton ship the endurance which 100 years after it sank is still going strong deep in the Antarctic the other thing about recycled materials is that they bring instant age and authenticity this Buddhist Shrine known as a stuper well it's box fresh it's only been here for 2 weeks but thanks to 200y Old bricks from Brighton it looks like it's been there for millennia [Music] traditional watering techniques are also getting a reboot at this year's Chelsea this is an olot and these have been used since time in Memorial they're made of porous clay what happens is they're sunk into the soil filled with water and then the roots of plants draws out that H2O as and when it's needed one of these in a 4x4 ft veg bed topped up with water before you go away on holiday well your veg would be happy while you're on the beach we all want to be greener and the guys at Planet Good Earth are knocking that out of the skate park growing vegetables is an easy way to be kinder to the planet there's no plastic wrapping there's no food miles and what you grow you know where it's been it's full of Vitality there's some interesting ideas here you see how the mustard and the chard have been allowed to run to seed well the flowers provide food for pollinators and the seeds that fall well effectively gives you food for free plants that grow and garden themselves this is what I really like though these veg Towers they got a watering system inside them and they're made from recycled pipes they use 10 times less ground space than conventional veg growing but get this 20 times less water that's a lot less cans to Lug about on the alotment going green in your garden doesn't have to be complicated or involve massive leaps in Innovation I mean just having a humble privet head in your garden can make all the difference and in City Gardens the leaves have the effect of cooling the air what you might not know though is the rhs scientists have discovered and put this plant right near the top as one of the best for capturing pollution which it does by a tiny little hairs on its leaves plant one of these in your garden not only make your garden greener it will be cleaner thank you to be some great tips there on cleaner and Greener Gardens now today I'm delighted to be joined by floral designer Hazel Gardner who's won a gold medal this year with her exhibit in the great Pavilion congratulations Hazel thank you so much Hazel Gardener I mean you had to go into this industry didn't you with a name like that I mean what else was I going to do nck and you're going to create something fabulous for us today aren't you yes so today we're going to create an elevated table design using this fabulous table art now this is something that I really really wasn't expecting how easy is it to get a frame like this so these are really easy you can get them online you can get them in a lot of DIY shops that are all around the country um as long as you know what to look for it's called a table Arch and they're super easy to use Easy to put up easy to store comes down into five sections so it's just a brilliant piece of Kit to have at home impactful right new start because we've got this floral burst here haven't we is this what we're replicating yes so this is where going to get to so yes you can design in so many different ways with this but I'm going to show you three designs today starting with this gorgeous burst so what you need to do is you need to get some chicken wire yes so we want to use the metal chicken wire instead of the plastic coated it just means it's a little bit stronger this is the one that we kind of use in floristry and you want to get a bundle of it and just simply attach it to the front of the frame using a cable tie we use reusable cable ties cuz it just means the whole thing you know you can keep it together and everything's ready for you to go again once you make another one so I'm going to start by adding in this amazing alium we love these aliums I was looking at them only yesterday on the show beautiful and what we love in floristry something that really covers so you don't have to use so much ingredients and so much foliage so you can see here that I've just got the I've got the chicken wire in there and I'm simply putting it in at an angle which just always helps to kind of like ease it in if it's at an angle and already I've covered the chicken wire and you just keep on going basically go on then keep creating going to say you now the weather has finally got better it's actually warm today we are outside aren't we we're ready to go outside to celebrate have our friends and family around but doing something like this when you think about it you get all ready for your friends to come around you might tidy up your garden you think of your menu but this is extra special extra special so in florish I always like to give a wow moment and that's even if I'm kind of working in the studio or at home and I think people have seen tablescape so much um we keep on going don't you worry I'm looking after these ones look they're fine it's the wind they are the wind look everything's going down now not to worry no one saw that did they no one saw that you see Joe Swift he would he's having a field day already be like she's no good at that but we should all have a go at floral go you keep going I'll look after the table here we're all fine so it's super easy so this is something you could do actually with your friends because once I've shown you as you see it's the mechanics are really really easy but you get something so professional looking and so dramatic but it's just so accessible for any beginner everyone can get their handles some flowers we've got took me through the types of flowers I can see the Tulips there yes we've got the Tulips great to use in all the supermarkets at the moment um so they're just really lovely and I love the way they kind of Bend you know with the light we've got loopin which is always nice when you're doing something slightly bigger to really have things that create impact so a little bit you know vertical things like Fox gloves I really love using we've got some sweet will which is great out of bars and you're just threading them through just threading them through so it really is kind of you know this is your creativity you don't have to worry too much or overthink it it's really just about popping the flowers in as you'd like to and I love the fact that you sort of Twisted the foliage all around here it brings it alive yes so you could keep it just with a bare pole but it's always nice to kind of dampen it down a bit and just take that metal down so all we've done is used just big suedes of Ivy and what have you used you've got ivy this isn't I though what's yes that's a bit of Virginia creeper we've got in there we've got clematis but basically if you want something that's trailing then use trailing variety so honeysuckle clematis anything like that and I've just simply wrapped it around so that the finishing touches that's it and you just keep on going visually it looks so beautiful if you had a special birthday a celebration I mean it looks amazing and then the next day you can take it down give them all a good drink and then have a table decoration as well exactly and if you're really worried cuz as you said it's heating up today if you're worried uh about you know your flowers wilting you can actually pop them in a in a vial we use these in FL and that will sustain them and should you give them a Mist as well give them a Mist as well um and just try if you're going to make this make on a very hot day maybe add in the flowers at the very last point so do all the foliage then add in the more delicate flowers just before your guests arrive perfect for spring perfect for summer keep this and you can patch it for winter as well exactly Hazel it's gorgeous thank you so much thank you so much now this week we've been celebrating the many benefits trees can bring to our Gardens and our experts have been guiding you through how to pick the perfect tree for your space today Mark's exploring the showr to hunt out the trees that will bring you something a little bit extra today we'll be looking at trees that just keep on giving whether that be Blossom fruit nut or simply Wildlife provision there's a tree for every [Music] space pomegranates are usually associated with warmer climates but you might be surprised to learn that they're actually relatively Hardy in the UK they're Hardy down to -5° C all they need is a warm sunny sheltered spot with free draining [Music] soil if you're looking for a statement tree that is both architectural and bears fruit then you cannot go wrong with the Fig it has these very distinctive large leaves almost hand-shaped and then the fruit turns from green to purple when it's ready the great thing about a fig is you can grow it in a pot or a container because it loves its roots being constricted put it somewhere nice and warm and sunny and you could be enjoying your own figs come September or October if you're short on space but you still want to grow a fruit tree then maybe the answer is an espalier or trained fruit tree this is a brilliant example of form Beauty and function in the wintertime you have the bare branches which look absolutely stunning when they're covered in Frost and then of course come late summer Early Autumn time you could be eating your own Delicious Fruit here we have a wonderful peir as you can see doesn't take up much room if you've got a bed wall that you just want to cover but you still want to have something beautiful to look at then an espalier fruit might be the [Music] answer if you're looking for an unusual shrub come tree then you cannot go wrong with this this is enkianthus otherwise known as the Chinese New Year flower tree it's half Hardy but if you grow it somewhere nice and warm and sheltered it will do really well now we grow it for these bell shaped flowers in clusters which the wildlife absolutely loved the Corky field Al is a slow growing dwarf form of Alm it's grown for this wonderful interest of Corky fishes on the branches it's absolutely beautiful and in the winter time when the leaves have gone you have this wonderful t texal silhouette in the Autumn time it also has superb colors Bonsai enthusiasts absolutely love it but if you want to grow something that's visually stunning this year then grow the Corky field [Music] Elm thanks Mark and tomorrow we'll have ideas for trees that are perfect for smaller spaces now this is the plant by their house plant studio called verdant visions that has won the best house plant Studio award it's been designed by James Whiting and it's a retro bedroom Sanctuary that celebrates the 1970s congratulations James you must be feeling really groovy yeah a little bit thank you thank you there's a real good vibe here it's really exciting now the 197s were known for house plants weren't they yeah definitely I think when you think about house plants you think of all those iconic things that your grandparents had growing in their living room load yeah exactly but why did we fall out of house plants what was it I think people wanted like cleaner living and more minimal homes and Interiors just changed um but it's come back you know people love vintage furniture they love vintage fashion and now the Retro house plants are all part of that lifestyle so it's like a cycle isn't it yeah completely come back into fashion completely now this is three separate areas isn't it you've got the bedroom Y what have you got here your sort of like Vala your dressing room your dressing table where you get ready for your night out um and then we've also got a bit of a secret bathroom as well Disco party bathroom but in all these areas the plants are the star attractions yeah of course so let's talk about some of them and why they're so special and why we should love them again yeah so all of the planting in my design is really retro 70s house plants and they're all really accessible and really affordable and I've worked with plants that are very small but you can still create a a really big display with them it's all about where you put them in your home um and they just really bring that retro vibe to life and when you put them with fun colors and fun patterns you just create a really interesting look okay so let's point out some of the plants that we produce in our own homes now that should be showing the love that we gave it in the' 70s I mean we have to mention spider plants you know they're really really beautiful you can chop bits off and give them to your family that's why they're so nostalgic everyone remembers that big spider plan in a mccr hanger that you know people had in their living rooms um also things like Monera yeah swiss cheese like my grand had that and I remember was a child it used to go everywhere it was you can't control it you know they start off like this and they look really sweet and innocent but before you know it they're rambling around and they're just taking over your space and what about something smaller if you don't want it too in your face this is quite cute is it yeah Maiden hair ferns are really really beautiful they are divas though they are they are definitely divas and not of the Disco kind they're a little bit tricky brilliant in a bathroom humidity great light and then you know you figure out your watering pattern and you'll get on okay with it but you do have to look after them like yes we had this discussion you were like get something you can look after and treat it like a member of the family yeah completely if you don't have a pet have a house plant there you go brilliant thank you so much Jam you're welcome thank you now there's just a few hours left for you to vote for your winner of the BBC rhs People's Choice Award 2024 there's eight large show gardens one day and it's already started growing and if you do this with your vegetables get them in water of particularly the bottoms see the growth already yeah and it gives you another bite of the well not the Cherry SMUD but the onion Nikki the onion fresh food every single day well this is it and actually it's quite a fun thing and I think you know with more house plants I've got house plants in my kitchen now of course I'm keeping up with the trend a few vegetables in there looks looks it's food for the eye as well delicious have you seen my cooking we should move on shouldn't we right I've heard about it Nikki we've got you in the hot seat let's she can as well um lovely celebrity one for you from Joe lys here he is with a question I've got a very shady patch in my garden and I'm looking for something entous to go in it most of the things in Shady spaces are a bit dull to me so I want something colorful and exciting for shade right straight out the blocks this is a bit of a gift cuz he's he's a man who likes a word play isn't he and there's a plant called FIA Japonica and it's quite glamorous despite that name it's got large leaves big white flowers in Autumn but it's as tough as old boots cuz it's country cousin of Ivy and just as Ivy grows pretty much anywhere this will grow in deep shade and it and well using a word Joe might use it looks fabulous yeah fancy name what's the common name that we might all remember oh castor oil plant that's what call it yeah fats here like that one thank you Angelica I want you to say hello to my new crew quite Rowdy we've got birthday twins birthday friends sisters and another set of friends here who are very excited to be here and Caroline what's your question hi Toby uh my question to you is um what uh PL can I put in containers that will be uh sturdy uh because I have a 13-year-old who likes to play Gaelic football and rugby oh my gosh oh plants and can you're looking for something bulletproof and that look to the coast for that plants that grow on the coast have to take buffer in from the wind they got to be tough they got to have leathery leaves and there's one called Forum or New Zealand flax before you pick me up thank you New Zealand flax yeah really leathery leaves you get different color forms that look really well and now you know even even with a garden like yours that has to be shared with a young Ronaldo it's uh you know it's he wishes it's to yeah you do well with that Forum thank you thank you Toby okay Dawn Porter has got in touch another SL so we have box surrounding a vegetable patch in our garden it's covered in those little green caterpillars does it have to go or is there any way that we can save it uh as soon as I had to word box I knew there was going to be trouble there these little caterpillars are difficult to get rid of and you don't want to be going spraying any chemicals they wouldn't work anyway but there is a a natural predator of those caterpillars and it comes in a packet it's a biological control microscopic worm that you add to a watering can or you add to a spray or even better and you blast into the webs the caterpillars create around them and then the bacteria inside it naturally as a natural predator kills the caterpillar and they stop feeding within a couple days it's just the only thing I'd say is these predators are new to our country that's why they these pests rather are new and that's where they're a problem but anecdotally I've seen birds feeding on them so it won't be won't be long before they learn to like this stuff and it before it sort of comes into balance but until then yeah this sort of biological control a real quick yeah we got Ashley here hi Toby um my question is um I have damp areas in my garden that are quite Shady um so I'm looking for planting to to put there okay damp areas well plant here is tree fern you see it in in the show Gardens here if you wanted to have a a native plant osanda regard regardless Regal FM that would work really well for you we have seen loads of those around the grounds haven't we does that answer your question absolutely thanks so much thank you always in fashion the lovely thing about all these questions is that everybody can relate to them can't they there'll be people up and down the land going I've got that problem I've got box caterpillar as well you know yeah made a group of ladies very happy thank you ladies you thank you so much Toby always lovely when you join us and that's all we've got time for today today join Monty and Joe this evening on BBC 2 at 8:00 p.m. when they'll have everything you need to get ready for summer and we'll be back here on bbc1 tomorrow at 3:45 for our last day here at Chelsea when we'll be joined by star of Bridget and Polly Walker who plays lady pora fingon don't you know see you tomorrow see you tomorrow bye bye bye [Music]
