What Happened to STEVE BUSCEMI?

some say that character is what you do when no one is watching well Steve busim the acclaimed character actor showed us all his true character on September 11th 2001 when he reported to ground zero and worked with his old unit engine company 55 in Manhattan without Fanfare press conferences or public declarations Steve busim worked alongside other firefighters in the aftermath of the attacks it was only later through chance encounters and quiet disclosures that the public learned of his selfless actions that day and so it is fitting that buim a man of character is best known for his character actor work bringing depth nuance and complexity to the roles he played on screen just as he brought courage compassion and humility to his work on and after that faithful day in 20 0 1 but how was that courage formed what made Steve put his Hollywood celebrity Lifestyle on hold and risk his life to save others and how does he bring so many memorable characters to life in so many incredible groundbreaking films how does he do it and is he still doing it what the happened to Steve busim woo hey hey hey come on [Applause] woo but to truly understand what the happened to Steve buim we must begin at the beginning in the beginning began when he was born on his birthday 1957 Brooklyn New York and as you know before pursuing a career and acting Steve busim served as a firefighter with the New York City Fire Department from 198 to 1984 he worked at engine company 55 in Manhattan's Little Italy Steve's experience as a firefighter has had a lasting impact on his life and his work and he has often spoken about the camaraderie and the sense of purpose it gave him after leaving the New York City Fire Department Steve busim began taking acting classes and landed his first film role in 1985 with a comedy called the way it is because of his acting skills and his unique face many people were interested in what this young actor was able to do and yes this man he was certainly blessed by God with unconventional facial features which at one time looked exactly like Angelina Jolie just saying in the 1986 film parting glances Steve has a supporting role in this drama about a group of gay friends in New York City while not a major role it did showcase Steve's ability to inhabit character on the fringes of society is this a good one it's fabulous it's fabulous he could also be seen in an episode of Miami Vice the following year in 1987's Kiss Daddy good night Steve portrayed Johnny further demonstrating his versatility in smaller roles and then in 1989 Steve was able to work alongside Master filmmaker Jim jarish and formed a wonderful working relationship Steve plays Charlie the barber in the movie Mystery Train and yeah this Jim jish Anthology film allowed Steve to Showcase his talent for bringing depth and Nuance to Eccentric characters a skill that would become a Hallmark of his career up next Steve would form another wonderful working relationship with some master filmmakers named the Cohen Brothers in the 1990 wonderful gangster flick Miller's Crossing he gets to do the whole fast talking idiosyncratic gangster type of thing which of course added to the film's rich tapestry of colorful characters and further subit his acting reputation he would work with the Cohen Brothers again the following year with Barton Fink another Masterpiece another eccentric strong supporting character who has a little bit of mystery to him and you know he's funny too then he would work with Quinton Tarantino that's like three Masters in a row Jim jish the Cohen Brothers which only count as one and now Quinton Tarantino that's that's right his career took a significant turn in 1992 with his iconic performance as Mr Pink in Reservoir Dogs he perfectly plays the cynical foulmouthed jewel thief who likes to steal jewels and steal scenes his wonderfully tense exchanges with all of the other cast members brings this movie to a whole new level his energy his Panic his dread and his sense of humor are all used to cinematic Perfection Quinton knew how to direct Steve and Steve he knew how to spit out quinton's words he would work with Quinton again in Pulp Fiction but you know it's just a brief Cameo as the Buddy Holly waiter and yeah it was nice to see Steve I think we'll come to see that he is like the best at cameos and yeah I love Pulp Fiction it's like a perfect movie but I guess if I could change one thing I would say more Buddy Holly waiter please interestingly Tarantino initially considered Steve for the role of Jimmy which the director ultimately played himself however due to scheduling conflicts it prevented Steve Bushi from taking the part of Jimmy those stupid schedules so yeah the ultimate movie question is would Mr Pink tip Buddy Holly comment your comment in the comments the person with the best comment gets a $5 milkshake which actually kind of sounds like a good deal now before we continue with our video here's a reminder to click the store tab on any of our joeblow channels and browse our collection of the latest and freshest designs in our merch store go get you some then in 1993 came Rising Sun where Steve buim once again plays a supporting character once again this is the type of movie that allowed him to show his comedic chops amidst the film's Neo Noir Thriller narrative then the next year Steve threw us all for a loop fully embracing comedy and fully embracing rock and roll in Airheads Steve alongside Brennan Fraser and his buddy Adam Sandler totally rock your movie mind in the most hilarious way possible in this movie Airheads he's so believable in this and so hilarious it's one of those movies that was constantly playing on Comedy Central back in the day and you always had to sit down and watch it he would then do another Cohen CIO in the movie hudsucker proxy you know cuz he's the go-to actor for offbeat characters right well director Robert Rodriguez certainly thought so and he had Steve join the cast of Desperado in another memorable role fittingly a character named Bui which sometimes people say Bimi Bui Bimi but like Steve he says Bui I think so boo speaking of buo he's really good in those Monsters Inc movies am I right so yeah in the same year that he did Desperado Steve busim also appears in living in Oblivion it's an an independent film about independent film and Steve plays the director foreshadowing his career as a director in real life this was followed by a hilarious cameo in Billy Madison helping out his good old buddy Adam it's so wonderful and so interesting and so cool that Steve he's the type of actor who can appear in an Adam Sandler movie and totally knock it out of the park and also work with these prestigious master filmmakers at the same time he's the best of both worlds and they play off of each other too then came probably the most perfect Steve performance ever once again working with the Cohen Brothers playing a bumbling exentric Hitman in 1996's Fargo Steve's performance as Carl is memorable for his quirky mannerisms and his witty onliners and his comedic timing which had a layer of dark dark humor to this movie's tense and violent moments he brings this character to life that you can't help but just laugh and be terrified as blood squirts out of his face the dude is a clown and a monster and despite the character's flaws and ineptitude Carl is a complex and intriguing figure through his wonderful performance he's able to chip away at the character revealing more and more just chip chip chipping chip chipping away until he's in a wood chipper [Applause] at this point in his career Steve could do no wrong he was delivering us fabulous performances that made us laugh made us cry made us think he was even mentioned in the lyrics of a blessed Union of Souls song or that guy who played in Fargo I think his name is Steve and in the same year that he appeared in Fargo Steve busim would make his feature directorial debut with tree's Lounge in which he starred as Tom this film showcased his unique voice as a writer and director and show off his distinct blend of humor and Melancholy then Steve bu Simi hopped on board a Plane full of bad guys and Nicholas Cage and his friend with diabetes in 1997's Conair Steve takes on the role of the psychotic serial killer Garland green who has a particular fascination with philosophy and literature and little girls his performance added the perfect much needed Touch of quirky humor in this action-packed prison drama in the sky say what you want about Conair it kind of is perfect for what it is but yeah Steve's performance and his character they're kind of too interesting to be in this movie like he deserves his own movie that would probably be too terrifying to watch but what can I say I love that Steve is in this movie then he would jump off that plane and jump right back into another Cohen Brothers movie another freaking Masterpiece the big Labowski Steve plays Donnie in this 1998 hilarious comedy this character is more you know soft spoken and even more pathetic than usual was able to show off his range a bit but still stayed true to the type of characters that you know the cohens like to cast him in this is one of his most iconic and beloved performances and we all still shed a tear every time we see coffee can but yeah if you want a master class of scene stealing study Steve in the big Labowski he's surrounded by the most talented actors out there and they're both screaming their heads off with some of the most wonderful dialogue ever written yet somehow you're always able to also pay attention to Donnie that right there that's the best type of acting there is and the other type of best kind of acting there is is whatever the hell Steve busim is doing when he appears in an Adam Sandler movie just look at him here in The Wedding Singer freaking comedy gold and this came out in 1998 the same year as the big leowski and you know what else came out in that same year of 1998 mother Armageddon which is arguably the greatest movie ever made because it helped Inspire the creation of joblo.com just saying but yeah Steve plays the character of rockhound and just like what he did with Conair he is a hilarious scene stealer surrounded by a bunch of freaking awesome action Michael Bay Perfection his performance brought a much needed dose of humor and levity to this high stakes premise Steve has wonderful chemistry with everyone in this cast Bruce Willis Ben Affleck That stripper I think Steve has chemistry with everyone in the world which is probably why he saved the world thanks Steve just like that asteroid in Armageddon Steve he would not slow down he would keep popping up in Adam Sandler movies and being the funniest thing about them like Mr Deeds and big dad Andy would keep on doing the director thing bringing us a gritty drama called animal Factory further showcasing his skills behind the camera and his ability to explore complex themes and characters Steve gave a wonderful performance in the film Ghost World he's the standout in this quirky Little Indie and I even remember him getting some Oscar buzz for this Steve would also pop up in the film domestic disturbance with John Travolta and Vince vaugh and yet domestic disturbance it's a pretty interesting Thriller but I think more thrilling more interesting things were happening behind the scenes of domestic disturbance because during filming Steve was slashed in the face in a bar fight while standing up for his buddy Vince vaugh which resulted in several injuries then came the wonderful Pixar film Monsters Inc where he lends his distinctive voice to the character of Randall he very convincingly plays a misguided villain his vocal performance is probably one of the highlights of this Pixar classic he would also do some wonderful Voice work in the movie monster house and he was perfectly cast as the rat in Charlotte's Web he would then work with Robert Rodriguez again but not in a violent movie like Desperado in a kids movie like Spy Kids too the island of Lost Dreams and Spy Kids 3D game Over Steve brings his unique brand of quirky humor to these familyfriendly adventures and he also makes us think about you know God and exist and what it means to just to just be like listen to this this this line it's like way too intense for a Spy Kids movie but Steve he says it perfectly do you think God stays in heaven because he too lives in fear of what he's created busim would then reunite with director Jim jish for another brief but memorable cameo in the acclaimed 2003 film coffee and cigarette his appearances in these Jim jish films submited his status as a quintessential figure in the realm of American independent cinema oh yeah and he plays a waiter in this one too he would then work with another Master filmmaker Tim Burton in the movie Big Fish he delivers a poignant performance once again showcasing his abilities in a wonderful supporting role and just when we thought we had seen the best that Steve was ever going to bring the dude went and decided to join in the cast of The Sopranos Steve made his mark on this acclaimed television series his performance added a layer of complexity to the show's exploration of crime and family Dynamics bum's involvement with the show extended to directing several episodes further demonstrating his versatility as a Storyteller speaking of storytellers Michael Bay that's right he would work with Michael Bay again in the movie The Island cuz why not and I'm sure y'all all know that hilarious meme where he's like hello fellow kids or whatever well let me explain this meme to you fellow kids it comes from the TV show 30 Rock where Steve has a hilarious reoccurring role as Lenny a quirky private investigator then he popped up in a few more Adam Sandler flicks like I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry grownups and grown-ups too and yeah see what you want about these Adam Sandler films but they absolutely let Steve buim go Bonkers and allow him absolute freedom as an artist sometimes you got to be smart to be stupid but then Steve was really really smart when he decided to star in the period crime drama board walk empire where he perfectly portrays the gangster Nucky Thompson so yeah just when we thought he couldn't get any better in The Sopranos he goes and delivers us some Boardwalk Empire which is a tour deforce performance this earned him critical Acclaim and numerous Awards Steve delivered a nuanced and layered performance that showcased his range as an actor and his ability to Anchor a Prestige television series Boardwalk Empire it's one of the best shows ever made watch it on HBO which is now called Max because they said so and I guess he had a fun time doing the funny show 30 Rock because he would do another funny show Portlandia playing a variety of eccentric characters and even directing several episodes this collaboration allowed him to further Flex his creative muscles and you know indulge in that offbeat humor that Steve is just so wonderful at slapping Us in the face with he would do another Adam Sandler movie and another wonderful vocal performance when he played a lovable werewolf in the movies Hotel Transylvania Hotel Transylvania 2 Hotel Transylvania 3 summer vacation and I'm sure there's more to come cuz they'll never stop but then we were suddenly reminded that not everything Steve buim did was you know good or even funny he appears alongside Steve Carell and Jim Carrey and the unfunny flop the incredible Bert Wonderstone which on paper sounds like it should be funny sounds like it should have been a hit you know you got this wonderful cast should have been comedy gold but it was comedy not gold and he would pop up in yet another Adam Sandler flick the ridiculous 6 but he was not done delivering us some Prestige Cinema no no no in 2017 Steve buim well he delivered a standout performance in the satirical dark comedy the death of Stalin his portrayal of this Soviet leader was equal parts hilarious and chilling once again showcasing his ability to balance humor in drama and as an artistic Choice the director made sure nobody does a Russian accent and I don't know somehow it just works sometimes movies about death and history and the Soviets can be fun and you know sometimes I think God he just wants us to have fun speaking of God in 2019 Steve Bush shimi would become God he would take on the role of God in the quirky comedy series miracle workers and Steve's involvement as a director of several episodes allowed him to put his unique stamp on the the project and then something absolutely horribly tragic happened to Steve that he understandably doesn't talk about we even debated talking about this but it's a major part of his life and might help us understand him a little bit in 2019 Steve bum's beloved wife she passed away and I'm sure it just broke him as a human being I'm not sure how it has affected how he's approaching his career but we just want to say we we feel for you Steve we love you and may she rest in peace and there's really not a good way to segue from that especially with his next film which was titled the dead don't die it's honestly one of the strangest films I've ever seen and I think I hate it I think it's like the worst thing I've ever seen but it also fascinates me let me explain in 2019 Steve busim teamed up again reunited with his longtime artistic collaborator Master filmmaker Jim jish they got to together and gathered all of Jim's best actor friends and made a comedy about zombies called the dead don't die it's a satirical take on the horror genre and of course Steve is wonderful in it but this movie The Dead don't die I have no idea how it came out of Jim jish it feels like they think they're the first people to ever make fun of zombies and it's just so dead pan that it's dead but this right here this movie The Dead don't die it is the perfect example of how a master filmmaker with a wonderful ensemble cast can still produce shite like honestly Jim jish is the dead don't die it's so bad that I would rather watch Adam Sanders's huie Halloween for real huie Halloween is pretty good it's way better than it needs to be and Steve he plays Walter another supporting role that allows him to Showcase his comedic talents once again being the funniest part of an Adam andler movie oh that's a good roommate yes who a good one you are but yeah Steve he doesn't seem to be done yet looking ahead at Steve's career at his filmography he's got a lot of exciting projects on the horizon he's going to work with Tim Burton again in the highly anticipated Wednesday season 2 he's got a movie about a serial killer coming up and he's supposed to appear in Transformers one good for him go Steve go throughout his illustrious career Steve busim has consistently demonstrated an uncanny ability to breathe life into eccentric offbeat and often Darkly humorous characters from his breakout role as Mr Pink to his tour deforce performance as Nucky Steve has carved out a unique Niche for himself as a character actor and a masterful leading man and a skilled director and a funny cartoon voice and a friend of Adam and in addition to his career in film and television he's also made significant contributions offscreen he's very committed to Charities and nonprofit organizations that provide mental health and wellness services for active and retired firefighters and their families his commitment to this cause is a testament to his character and his dedication to giving back to the community further solidifying his legacy as not just a talent Ed actor or director but just a compassionate and caring individual you know he uses his celebrity for good he's just one of the good guys you know and it's all the more baffling and tragic when we recently learned that Steve was attacked while walking down the street in New York City on May 8th 2014 he was taken to a hospital and treated for bruising swelling and bleeding to his left eye after getting punched the Cowardly suspect was identified by authorities but as of right now I believe he's still at large let's check on that real quick oh no they got him good this disgusting incident is part of a disturbing Trend in New York City where there have been at least 12 reported incidents of people being randomly attacked over the preceding weeks this happened to Rick Moranis too another good guy what the [ __ ] it's news because everybody knows who Steve Bushi is but there are way worse crimes going on but on a more up lifting note whether stealing scenes in Ensemble comedies or anchoring Prestige dramas Steve busim has left his mark on the entertainment industry his ability to find humor and Humanity in the most unlikely of places has endeared him to audiences and critics alike cementing his legacy as a true original in the world of acting so nobody should give a f about what the happened to Steve bumi because he's doing just fine go [Music] [Music]
