[Music] fall has arrived so you know what that means you're probably grabbing your sweater classic pumpkin spice latte all the essentials but even better than that latte football is back and do you want to know what that means it means carrie underwood will be returning for a ninth season as sunday night football's opening theme singer i'm addison hacker for taste of country and since we're talking football i've got to know what nfl teams gear you will be repping this year i'm a texas gal so cowboys will be holding my attention this year but leave your team in the comment section below like i said underwood is back as the opening theme singer so i decided to call on taste of country's billy dukes to dive a little deeper into how underwood originally got this gig who had the coveted spot before her and all the random information you might want to know all right billy i don't see the issue here carrie is back for the ninth straight year singing waiting all day for sunday night and every year it's been a total hype show that gets me pumped for football so what gives you're half right addison carrie is back for a ninth season but this is only the sixth time she's performed that song and did you know that she's the fourth person to actually sing it well the fifth if you count joan jett who joined carrie in 2019. wait what now okay i'm confused give me a little history billy sure country stars and primetime football have gone together like butter on a corn cob since hank williams started with are you ready for some football on monday night football back in 1989 but since this isn't our popular podcast the secret history of country music i'll fast forward to 2006 when pink was chosen as the first person to sing waiting all day for sunday night that's a play on the song i'll hate myself for loving you by joan jett and blackhearts i've always found this song to be a really odd melody to choose for this kind of thing but that's neither here nor there for some reason it didn't work with pink so faith hill took over in 2007 and she did a great job until 2013 when carrie underwood was past the baton this was her jam for three seasons and then it wasn't for three seasons and now it's back for its third consecutive season so what's up with that gap in the middle this is the interesting part for two seasons underwood used a song called oh sunday night let's see if you can recognize it oh that's something bad by miranda lambert right miranda released that song as a duet with carrie underwood on her 2014 album platinum and it's easy to assume that that's why they picked it give carrie some love on the back end of this thing except i didn't carey didn't write this song it wasn't on one of her albums and it was by carrie underwood's standards a modest hit i mean it only reached like the top 10 on radio airplay charts that was some two years before it was her football song to this point no one ever used a carrie underwood song in the intro in the same way that hank jr did on monday night football for over 20 years when he'd sing are you ready for some football i'll stop now i'm guessing that changed it did change addison it did change in 2018 underwood debuted game on carrie co-wrote this song and it was fine except it got them all sued a songwriter named heidi merrell said hey they got that song from me and sued for copyright infringement saying she talked to carrie's producer about a song called game on a few years earlier eventually merrill dropped the charges but they never used that song again interestingly underwood has written one other song for football the champion which is arguably among her 10 best songs and is a killer live moment it led coverage of super bowl 52 in february 2018. it was a mood but it was also one and done hey okay wait i just remember you said five people saying waiting all day i got pink faith gary joan jett who's the other this is a footnote to be sure but for one week in 2012 a new orleans horn group called the soul rebels got a chance to do the song on national tv the saints won the game with a fourth quarter comeback but nfl never came back to that song thanks speedy hit that thumbs up button if billy just poured out a wealth of information on you now you'll have some fun facts to tell your friends the next time you watch a game together before i sign off here do me a favor and make sure that subscribe button is clicked we never want you missing out on the latest country music breaking news i'm addison hager and i'm billy dukes thanks for watching and thanks for subscribing
