WATCH: High heat may drive heavy Triad late day thunderstorms

HAPPY THURSDAY. YEAH, TODAY THE WEATHER IMPACTING US IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYS. WE DO HAVE A HEAT ADVISORY IN PLACE FOR MUCH OF EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA. IT DOES INCLUDE ONE LOCAL COUNTY. LATER TODAY WE'LL START TO SEE SOME HEAT DRIVEN OR REALLY HEAT SUPPORTED THUNDERSTORMS THAT WILL START TO MOVE INTO OUR AREA OUT OF THE NORTH. THAT COULD PRODUCE SOME DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND EVEN SOME HAIL. CAN'T BE RULED OUT. WE'VE GOT SOME MORE STORMS IN THE FORECAST THIS WEEKEND. THEY'RE NOT EXPECTED TO BE SEVERE, BUT THEY MAY INTERRUPT SOME LATER DATE PLANS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE SEE A LOT OF GROUND TO COVER TODAY. FIRST, A HEAT ADVISORY DOES NOT GO INTO PLAY OR COME INTO PLAY UNTIL NOONTIME TODAY. MONTGOMERY COUNTY IS THE ONLY COUNTY LOCALLY THAT'S INCLUDED IN THAT. BUT NEARBY CHATHAM ORANGE COUNTIES ARE INCLUDED IN THAT HEAT ADVISORY. EVEN IN THE TRIAD, WE COULD SEE HEAT INDEX VALUES AND EXPECT TO SEE THEM RISE INTO THE UPPER 90S AND EVEN LOWER. ONE HUNDRED'S A BIT LATER TODAY. WE'RE ALREADY OFF TO A WARM START, ESPECIALLY WINSTON-SALEM UP TOWARD KING. TEMPERATURES ARE REALLY NOT FALLING ALL THAT FAR FROM YESTERDAY. 77 IS THE CURRENT TEMP THERE. 73 AT THE AIRPORT AND ALSO IN HIGH POINT TODAY. WE DO HAVE SOME 60S REALLY WEST OF THE YADKIN RIVER THIS MORNING. SO IT IS FEELING A BIT MORE COMFORTABLE. HIGH PRESSURE REALLY IN CONTROL OF THIS HIGH PRESSURE CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT OF SINKING AIR. THAT SINKING AIR COMPRESSES THE AIR NEAR THE GROUND. AND THAT REALLY WHAT WARMS US UP AS MUCH AS IT HAS BEEN TEMPERATURES AS A RESULT, AGAIN EXPECTED TO REACH THE MID 90S TODAY, WE HAVEN'T SEEN MANY 90 DEGREE DAYS DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST. FOR ALL TOLD SO FAR, AND WE HAVEN'T SEEN HEAT LIKE THIS SINCE THAT REALLY HOT STRETCH OF WEATHER THAT WE SAW BACK IN MID-JULY WHEN A COLD FRONT WILL BRING SOME RELIEF AND THIS WILL BE WHAT TRIGGERS A LOT OF THE STORMS THAT DEVELOP SLOW MOVING STORMS WILL DEVELOP TODAY, AND THEN GRADUALLY MOVE SOUTHWARD, REACHING REALLY OUR BORDER COUNTIES IN THE AFTERNOON. AND THE TRIAD LATER ON IN THE EVENING COULD PRODUCE SOME INTENSE UPDRAFTS BECAUSE OF THAT HEAT, AND COULD BRING SOME NASTY STORMS INTO OUR AREA. A SERIES OF FRONTS, ONE DRAPED ACROSS THE WEST AND ANOTHER ONE BOTTLED UP IN CANADA. THEY WILL FOLLOW IN QUICK SUCCESSION LATER IN THE WEEKEND AND BRING MORE REFRESHING AIR BACK INTO THE MIX. BUT WE'RE NOT THERE YET, SO SOME HEAT DRIVEN THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE TODAY. THERE IS A RISK FOR NOT ONLY SOME HEAVY DOWNPOURS AND FREQUENT LIGHTNING, BUT WE COULD SEE SOME STRONG GUSTS AND SOME LARGE HAIL. A MODERATE RISK FOR BOTH OF THOSE, OR AT LEAST SOME LIGHTNING INVOLVED IN THAT AS WELL. JUST WATCH OUT FOR MAYBE ISOLATED AREAS WHERE THE WATER MIGHT NOT BE DRAINING AS QUICKLY. WE COULD SEE SOME PONDING ON AREA ROADWAYS HOUR BY HOUR. YOU CAN SEE THE SUNSHINE REALLY DOMINATING THE DAY. START TO SEE SOME FAIR WEATHER CLOUDS IN THE AFTERNOON AND A FEW SPOTTY SHOWERS AND STORMS. I'M NOT REALLY WORRIED ABOUT SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS DURING THE AFTERNOON. IT'S THIS CLUSTER THAT DEVELOPS IN VIRGINIA AND BEGINS TO MOVE SOUTHWARD. THAT BAND OF CLOUDS THAT YOU SEE A GOOD INDICATOR THAT THIS STORM SYSTEM WILL HAVE SOME WIND ASSOCIATED WITH THAT, THAT COULD DOWN SOME TREES AND PERHAPS CAUSE SOME POWER OUTAGES AFTER THAT. THE WEEKEND WEATHER DOES FEATURE SOME SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS. THEY'RE NOT EXPECTED TO BE SEVERE, BUT I THINK THEY'LL BE HIGHER IN NUMBER, ESPECIALLY FRIDAY. AND THEN AGAIN ON SUNDAY. WE'LL HAVE SOME CHANCES FOR WET WEATHER. TODAY'S HOT HIGH OF 95. ISOLATED STORM CHANCES BECOMING MORE SCATTERED LATE IN THE DAY. WE'LL GET CLOSE TO 93 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON IN THE FOOTHILLS. IMPACT ICONS UP FOR THAT SEVERE WEATHER CHANCE REALLY NOT DEVELOPING UNTIL MUCH LATER IN THE DAY. A MOUNTAIN RAIN CHANCES COULD BEGIN AS EARLY AS EARLY AFTERNOON. HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE MID TO UPPER 80S TODAY. AFTER TODAY WE COOL. SOME WILL STILL BE SEASONABLE THROUGH THE
