Yankees defeat the Cardinals due to strong pitching and Austin Wells' two-homer night

the Yankees recorded a win on Friday night as they doubled up the Cardinals in the lose 6 to3 Hector Bo champ he covers the Boon bombers for Latino Sports and he joins me now to talk some Yankee baseball Hector how are you doing how's it going I I like the fit I like the shirt looking good thank you thank you the Yankees are tied for the second best record in all of baseball right now we're going into September I'm feeling good dexer I know there's a lot of Yankee fans out there that may be panicking in Yankee land but Yankee fans just remember we do we are tied for the second best record in all of baseball panic and Yankee land that never happens that doesn't happen at all no no Panic and Yankee fans don't belong in the same sentence right doesn't seem like it belongs okay but the Yankees had got that six to3 victory over the Cardinals to open the series in your eyes what were the key factors that contributed to the Yankee success in the opener on Friday night uh it comes down to that starting pitching uh big shout out and big kudos to Marcus strowman he pitched seven Innings just allowing two runs but um even with our struggles like I've mentioned our record is our record but the games that we have lost it's because our starting pitching is giving us four Innings five innings and they're not able to get it to the back end of the bullpen out Bullpen already has question marks but when you're starting pitching can't go and can't bring the ball to the seventh inning and pass the ball make it easier for Klay Holmes at the end of the games you you make it tough for your team as a uh in total yeah that definitely makes it challenging but you got to like the performance that you saw on on Friday night in terms of the starting pitching now I want to talk to you about Austin Wells because he had a standout performance two home runs against the Cardinals how important is his emergence as a power hitter for the Yankees it's it's super important right I wanted to add Austin Wells into the uh equation of the our Victory from last night's game but I had to talk about the starting pitching when you look at Austin Wells since becoming the Yankees cleanup hitter this season Austin wells in the 20 games as a cleanup hitter he's hitting 346 he has five home runs 21 RB nine walks and nine run score on top of it he has three doubles Austin Wells when the Yankees drafted him out of college he was supposed to be this big offensive bat at at the catching position and so far this season at the beginning of the Season it was ups and downs but ever since the Yankees trusted him and when Jose Travino went down and he became the full-time everyday starter Austin Wells has been the big differenc maker in that lineup it was a part of the Season at the middle of the Season that teens started a walking Aaron Jud because nobody behind him was hitting as soon as they inserted Austin Wells into that cleanup spot that conversation has shifted because Austin Wells he's putting that in the back of the opposing manager's mind yeah and you wonder how his confidence is growing here Hector as he plays these really important games for the Yankees in September as they try to hold on and win the AL East want to talk to you about Anthony Rizo because there's been a lot of talk about his potential return to the lineup how crucial is Rizzo's presence for the Yankees offense and what are the expectations for his impact if he returns soon within the next week or so when you look at our first base platoon right we have DJ lahu who's hitting under 200 right now he's struggling we have Ben rice who's a rookie as well who's struggling right now because he's not getting everyday rep at the big league level so whatever you could get out out of Anthony Rizzle it's just a plus if you could catch lightning in a bottle from Rizzle coming back he's a professional hitter he is a veteran he gives you veteran leadership and we do know the relationship that he has with Aaron judge the Yankees are going to are going to have to make a lot of uncomfortable decisions going forward what are they going to do with Ben rice what's going to have happen with DJ lahu but if Anthony Rizzle can come back and give you solid close to go glove defense I'm not expecting Anthony rizle to be the Platinum Defender Platinum glove Defender that he once was in his career but he if he can give you better defense than you're getting out of DJ lameu and Ben rice is just a plus and like I said he is a veteran he knows how to hit left-handed pitching even though he's a lefty hitter and that's the one thing this Yankees lineup has been struggling with hitting left-handed pitching and Anthony Rizzo I think he can give you a Plus on that department that would be a huge boost for them as you said the struggles with left-handed pitching that we've seen from the Bronx bombers thus far this season now looking ahead to the rest of the series against the Cardinals what are you keeping an eye on over the next two games in St Louis I'm looking for will Warren to um give us a solid start right I know he's a rookie right uh his erra is what his erra is but I had the pleasure of interviewing will War and you can tell that he has good makeup right he has good stuff he just has to find it at the big league level with Marcus strowman giving out star giving out Bullpen seven Innings that means our Bullpen is rested today so even if Will Warren pitches into the fifth inning or he only gives you four Innings we do have some guys in the bullpen that have some rest and could come out and support will Warren but for today's game I think will Warren is goingon to have to give us six Innings and this offense keep rolling keep keep this rolling I know Aaron judge was 0 for four in yesterday's game with three strikeouts but everybody stepped up and this team the importance is if Aaron judge and Juan stto aren't hitting who is going to step up and help this team score runs that has been a big question around the Yankees all season but they got a boost last night from Austin Wells hopefully others can step up and starting pitching can St up so step up excuse me so
