The 49ers injury update you've been waiting for — Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos

all right hello everybody hope you're having a good Sunday afternoon we have the 49ers injury report that you've been waiting for since Friday night and I think it's relatively good news for the 49ers seems like they may have gotten away without all too much long-term damage Leonard Floyd who suffered the knee injury defensive end is day today yur gross Matos is week to week Cal Shanahan was asked on the conference call we just conclude it right now if the week- toe status of etour girl smos who got hurt the play before Leonard Floyd might land him on injured reserve and Kyle Shanahan said no I do not think so so this is one of the positions where the 49ers are thinner than others and here's a look at my roster the 49ers are entering 53 man cutdown mode so this is a roster that you you should become familiar with I could zoom in on the defensive end position you could see that Floyd and gr Matos are now shaded in that pink color means that Nick Bosa is the 49ers top healthy defensive end that was always the case but number two and number three both hurt again Floyd day to day gr Matos week to week Leonard Floyd is on a 108 game streak he is an Iron Man it's been years since he's missed a game so it appears now since the 49ers don't play for another two weeks tomorrow is the 14 day Mark ahead of the Monday Night Football opener against the Jets it appears that Leonard Floyd is going to be able to run that streak to 109 uour gross MOS doesn't have that type of streak but there does appear to be a chance that he will be back for the 49ers season opener but back to what the 49ers need at this defensive end spot if both of these guys had been out for a longer period of time that it would be real trouble for the 49ers because I think even with everybody healthy it's still a little sketchy at defensive end they're going to need somebody like Robert Beal to step up or maybe even Alex Barrett who came into the game after both of Floyd and gr Matos got hurt maybe even Sam o who had that sack late in the game for the 49ers they definitely need to dig into their defensive end depth and we'll see how they handle the Floyd and gr M's injuries over the next few days by the way over the next few days the 49ers are going to be in roster cutdown mode so this is why this sheet right here the 53 man projection should be useful we'll see how the 49ers cut it down the 53 and how they build their 16-man practice squad another part of this update is D Winters has an ankle injury and MRI results will be needed until we know more about D Winters that is the 49ers second year linebacker I think there's been good and there's been bad from D Winters this preseason a lot of hype surrounding him coming out of OTAs when Fred Warner said that D had the best OTAs out of any player on the 49ers team and then we saw some Electric plays in the preseason opener for D Winters against the Tennessee Titans but we also saw some negative plays right now I think he's a lower floor high ceiling player which you don't mind at a deep position for the 49ers like linebacker it's hard to teach a high ceiling D Winters obviously has it he's got speed former safety former receiver at the high school level and now they're trying to rein in some of the negatives to make sure that he can grab the torch at the linebacker position when the time comes another part of this injury update forers fans should like this Ricky peol is going to be back tomorrow maybe we got to toss Ricky piera's name into the title of this video everybody seems to be talking about Ricky peol and for some reason people are trying to call Ricky peol a bust before he even has a chance to play a single NFL game before he has a chance to play an NFL game here's some perspective Brandon auk his rookie season 2020 missed his first game week one due to injury Brandon auk obviously was not a bust first round pick went to Arizona State just like Ricky piol began his college career as Brandon auk's teammate at Arizona State but Brandon auk as a first- round pick is now in position to make a lot of money no updates on that front no updates on the Trent Williams front although deadline pressure is definitely here if these guys want to build enough of a football callus to be as safe as possible week one we're 15 days away from from the 49ers season opener against the Jets and you know the 49ers have to make some roster decisions this week with the cutdown happening and the first official post 53 man cutdown practice happening on Wednesday a player that they'll need to make a decision on is talanoa hufanga now with hufanga he's coming off of the torn ACL but if they feel that he's not fully ready to go for practice by the cut down they can keep him on the physically unable to perform list and carry him over into the pup list that's called the pup moving from the offseason into the regular season the stipulation there would be that taleno huanga would have to miss at least the first four games so here I don't have him counting against the 53 man as you can see I've designated talanoa huanga for pup Dre Greenlaw is definitely going to be on pup I don't think there's any question about that but huanga they have to decide where exactly he is the benefit obviously is that he would not count against the 53 man roster if he carries over to pup in the regular season the only way that you can put somebody on pup the regular season list is if they were already on pup in training camp so the players that are eligible for that are too huanga and Dre Greenlaw one of those two at least will end up transferring over to the regular season pup list the other one may or may not and the 49ers have to make a decision on huanga by Wednesday also an update at the safety position a lot of people were wondering George odm didn't start the game at safety for the 49ers in Vegas Malik Mustafa did but George Odum did play very briefly on the very first kickoff in that game but he actually rolled his ankle during pregame warm-ups in Vegas odm is okay he's were recovered from that the fort Anders just didn't want to expose him the too much during that preseason game so I would expect if assuming huanga is ready to start week one if that's the case I would expect George odm and Jer Brown to be the 49ers starting safeties week one I have never expected them to start a rookie Malik Mustafa I you know my stance on Mustafa has been clear I think he's been electric over the course of this preseason I think that he's going to be a great player especially within the context of the 53 man roster because once you cut down the 53 I mean you could see how many fewer bodies you have in the room it's only the left side of this dividing line that the 53 man roster so once you cut down to 53 you have to start thinking about okay who's adaptable who can give snaps at multiple different positions who can actually help boost this team as it begins its game planning processes where the 49ers can become much more creative to beat specific opponents and I think that Malik Mustafa fits into that type of role really well we saw how teleno huanga was integrated into the 49ers lineup as a rookie in 2021 versatile guy third safety Deo Ryan was the defensive coordinator that year and the 49ers really started surging down the stretch defensively well I think that we might be able to see something similar from Malik Mustafa this year but I would not expect him to start for the 49ers to begin the season against the New York Jets if it's not hu funga in there and that's going to have to be determined probably by Wednesday or at least his roster status they can rule him out totally for weeks one to four by Wes Wednesday but if it's not Mustafa in there then it will be George Odum and Jer Brown so the 49ers are now in cutdown mode uh up on the athletic I'll put this up for you we've got a couple articles that you should check out this is the first one that came out today I was in Vegas yesterday it was a really quick trip for me and I was in the locker room and I wrote about Isaac gendo who by the way Kyle Shanahan shared something really interesting about Isaac rendo in the conference call right now that was his first time since the Senior Bowl wearing shoulder pads and he goes out there and he delivers a 93 yard kickoff return and I thought he looked good in the zone running game as well but that's something I didn't put together because greno had only been back at practice for one week and the 49ers hadn't dawned full PR full pads in any of that stretch so here was Isaac gendo first time in full shoulder pads first game since the Holiday Bowl last year for Louisville where he went off for over 200 allpurpose yards and three touchdowns and he absolutely delivered we saw the 433 speed we saw the 220 plus pound uh muscular build the combination of which we rarely see in NFL in fact over the course of the past 20 Seasons only two prospects have entered the league running 4.33 or faster in the 40 while weighing 220 or more pounds those two prospects been DK medf and Isaac gendo he might be ideal for the new kickoff rules and the new kickoff return rules and we saw the 93 Yer funny to me he just shot out of a cannon moving down that left sideline you saw the 4-3 speed there and then he had a cut on a diagonal across the field to get away from the back end of the kick coverage and he finally got run down at about the five yard line and for the last I don't know 15 30 yards it looked like somebody had strapped a piano onto Isaac gendo's back he really really slowed down but you have to realize he had a run and he estimated I asked him in the locker room in Vegas he estimated that he had to run about 140 yards for the 93 yard kick return anybody that is 220 plus pounds and also has shoulder pads on for the first time in months and months and months they're going to slow down after a certain point and that Point's going to come before 140 yards especially somebody like Isaac Reno's 220 pounds I mean there's a lot of muscle there this is not a distance Runner this guy's built like a sprinter he was a sprinter back in the day as well so it wasn't surprising to me that he slowed down on yard 110 or yard 120 of that Sensational kickoff return but what matters is the burst that he showed earlier in that return and boy was that impressive for Isaac gendo all right back to the top right here before I get into a little bit of a 53 man roster breakdown those of you just joining by the way uh I'm going to have Mike put this into the description on YouTube so those of you watching on YouTube you can go ahead and go to the description subscribe to the athletic check out that article on Isaac gendo we we had a great conversation and this is actually Intel that I got from Bobby Turner 49ers running backs coach at the start of this month Turner said that gendo at least initially asked for a number in the 20s the 49ers obviously didn't have a number in the 20s so he got more of the fullback number 49 and it reminded Bobby Turner of Matt breida back in 2017 as a rookie got 49 breida tore it up breida earned 22 after the roster cut down after some numbers opened up and it's a big point of Pride for Matt breida even today he'll talk about the 22 the jersey that he earned to move away from number 49 as an undrafted free free agent in 49ers training camp so gendo trying to earn his stripes as well and we'll see if he moves into the 20s now I followed up with Isaac in the locker room and he said you know I feel at 49's got an AA to it 49 on the 49ers I'm actually surprised that more players don't want that Jersey if you have any thoughts on it you could let me know in the comments section either on Twitter or um on on YouTube if you're listening on the podcast by the way on the Lombardi Lounge Spotify uh Apple podcasts wherever you can your podcast you can always watch the the the video form of this and and you could leave some feedback but um or you could leave a question that I can answer but uh 49 on the 49ers I I would think you know would be more popular but it's not and here we have Isaac gendo with uh 49 and he's starting to talk about the aura of the Jersey it helps when you have a 93 yard kick return to Chris and the jersey and your first day in shoulder pads since the senior bow so anyway check out that article my has put the link to the athletic where you could sign up in the description that is Isaac greno and here are you know I put the lonard Floyd uh knee injury status at the bottom of the screen for those of you just tuning in good news for the 49ers on Leonard Floyd dayto day he's an Iron Man this is a guy who I still remember the very first practice of training camp this year I think it was the first snap he hobbled off and I'm like oh boy first practice first snap this guy's not going to want to push anything very next series Leonard Floyd was back in there and then I thought of what Leonard told all of us after the 49ers signed him and we were talking about his 108 game streak his Iron Man status 108 games in NFL that's that's a long time I've got to bust out a calculator to calculate 10 1008 game streak now I think that includes the postseason as well but if we're just including regular seasons I mean that's over six seasons that Leonard Floyd hasn't missed a game I think the last time he missed a game was 2017 or 2018 and I thought about that and and one of the things that Leonard said was I've been hurt over the course of the 108 game streak but I've just been able to tough it out and go out there like there's no way that you can operate in the NFL especially in the trenches like Leonard Floyd does and not get hurt but so much of it and also there's no way that you can operate a live show and not knock over your microphone it's becoming a little bit of an issue it's embarrassing it's happened to me like four times in the last last 10 lives that I've done I think I have to reset this mic arm there it's a lot better now we're functional again um anyway uh Leonard Floyd has gotten hurt over the course of uh the past six plus Seasons but he hasn't missed a game and you know I I just think it goes back to what this guy is made of obviously he's in phenomenal shape so much about the the mystery of Leonard Floyd and I think the the reason why he's going to be a good addition to the spers defensive line and we saw a little bit of it already in the preseason finale against the Raiders is that he's built like a white out right I mean he's 64 he he weighs in at 240 but to me it looks like he's a little bit lighter I'm not saying that he is lighter I mean that in a complimentary way just it's just this really wiry strength that you don't typically see from defensive ends and I know there's been a revolution in football and defensive ends have gotten lighter and athleticism at that position has become the the Beall end all but Leonard Floyd has taken it up to another level because normally if you get too light you can't set an edge against the run and you become a liability in that regard but he hasn't been a liability against the run over the course of his career and I think that the lighter weight has actually given him the ability to succeed in the department that he's the best at and that is the cleanup sack department and you saw his sack before he got hurt against the Raiders was absolutely uh right down to a te of what we expect from Leonard Floyd he didn't win by overpowering the tackle he won because he was able to knife his way through a crowd and Corral the quarterback and that you know that requires hustle that requires wiry strength that requires flexibility that requires athleticism and it requires brains and I think Leonard Floyd is a really really smart pass rusher the 49ers have been looking for somebody to pair with Nick Bosa on the opposite side and you know that Bosa is going to win his one-on-ones often you know that Javon hardgrave who's one of the better interior rushers in the game is gonna win his one-on-one offense so what happens when two guys win uh and but but the rest of the lines tell us to worry about everybody else well the other guys better be able to seal off the Escape hatches that the quarterback is going to try to get through once he sees Bosa and orar grave winning and I think that's what Leonard Floyd can be really good at for the 49ers now other defensive end that they picked up this off season who also suffered an injury a play before Leonard Floyd is ur gr Matos and he's some had some really impressive reps over the course of the preseason I still remember the one against the Saints in week two where he just beat the left tackle with a rip move got right back into the quarterback's lap but uh gross MOS is weak to week the good news for the 49ers there is that they do not anticipate that he'll need to go and injur to reserve with 15 days left until the start of the regular season I think there is a solid chance that you Tour gross MOS is back from Monday night football against the Jets but gross MOS he's bigger he's more of the 270 pound type the standard defensive end body but he's also really really athletic and they feel that they can use him in a way that will really unlock his abilities I think he really started to turn up toward the end of his time with Carolina especially when they lined him up in inside and the 49ers have not been shy about their plans to line youour gross MOS up on the inside so Floy day today you girl Matos week to week once he's back maybe for week one we will see maybe Charles am menu ardan key like role outside setting the edge on base Downs inside rushing against guards in nickel packages MRI results needed for D Winters Ricky piol back at practice tomorrow uh and taleno huanga decision needed by Wednesday because the 49ers are in cut down mode and speaking of cut down mode why don't we go to the 53 man roster I'm want to be making several projections or talk about projections over the course of the next few days so go ahead and subscribe make sure that you're all on board so you are ready for all the updates that I'll be giving you and I'm also going to be sharing some cool sights and sounds from San Francisco because I just went on an awesome bike ride today then then on a swim in the bay I got a I had a seal encounter today in the bay that I'm G to have to tell you about but first I want to delve into this 53 man roster look soon as I get a couple of these clips ready for everybody it was I mean it still is I'm taking time out of my day right now uh to not be outside it is absolutely epic outside in the city we're talking like 75 not a cloud out in the sky and uh just brilliant sometimes it could be fogust at this time of the year fortunately we're we're not currently dealing with fogust like conditions anyway 49ers in cutdown mode they've got to figure out a way to pair down this 90 man roster to 53 man roster I have some thoughts about it you know I I think that we need to be smart and we need to follow clues that the 49ers have set up for us in the past in the past they've shown us that they want to stockpile quarterbacks well I think they take three then on the 53 man roster and if you want to continue stockpiling on top of that why not add Tanner morai into the mix as well on the practice squad they've they've consistently taken five running backs including the fullback so I think this is the group that you look at for the 49ers with mcaffrey obviously leading the way we'll see when he returns the practice but I think Christian is close Six has been the average number at receiver for the 49ers and I think you're most I group is auk Samuel Jennings Conley Pier Saul who's returning to practice tomorrow and Jacob cowing be happy to take off the injury color shade from Ricky piera's name four tight ends this is interesting right now I've got cam lotu is the 49ers fourth tight end that being said uh today Kyle Shanahan mentioned that they really wanted Logan Thomas back they obviously cut him a couple weeks ago then they resigned him sounded like he had some opportunities on other teams but he decided to go back to the the 49ers and I reading in between the lines I feel that this all lines up for a practice squad spot for Logan Thomas who caught 55 passes for Washington last season but the blocking that the 49ers asked their tight ends to do is very very different than what Logan Thomas previously had to do so he it's been a crash course for him and this is a guy that has decided to embrace a challenge you have to tip your cap to Logan Thomas for coming to a place where they play real football where they ask the tight ends to block and not just run pass patterns from the slot all the time and that's not for everybody and I talked to Brian flurry the 49ers tight ends coach about this a couple weeks ago and he said that you know Logan Thomas fully embraced that challenging aspect of the job when he decided to come to the 49ers and one of the things that Kyle Shanahan talked about today was that Logan Thomas had opportunity after the fort Anders cut him because they couldn't fit him on the 90 man due to injuries and all this and all that other teams had the the opportunity or to try to learn Logan Thomas to sign with them and Logan Thomas had the opportunity to sign with them but he obviously did not take it he'd rather stay in the building with the 49ers so he's back there now and to me that just creates a really really interesting situation in the tight end room who do they take beyond the four that they nor take is Cam latu indeed going to be number four I think yes at this point but nothing is ever certain before cut down day you know you have to remember it's essentially cam lat's first season cam latu last year was in training camp for a couple weeks dropped a bunch of passes and then had knee surgery and he was done for the entire year it was IR dunzo so this is a former defensive end at Alabama relatively recent convert to the tight end position who is already an exponentially better receiver of the football this season than he was last season and he's just got such a big thick frame that I think is ideal for blocking in the 49ers system I felt that as long as he showed adequate Improvement here in his second training camp the 49ers were going to want to keep him around so the four in that case would be KD Eric sober lot to and brayen Willis and then how many do you keep in the building for the practice squad I think that Logan Thomas based on what Kyle Shanahan said today is on the inside of that picture as they keep on developing him as a blocker and then it's a decision between Jake tonas and Mason Pine I don't see them carrying three tight ends on the practice squad but it's up to them they can do whatever they want as long as they fit it under the 16 player limit you know what I thought was really interesting today is that the I think the 49ers like all of their rookie offensive linemen that includes nent that includes Kingston uh it feels to me like the 49ers are just trying to keep it as tight lipped as possible about the players that that they like that that may be on the roster bubble because they definitely want to keep those guys within the sphere of the building even if they have to wave them it's so hard if you're the 49ers because you have a loaded roster that he's highly highly respected across the National Football League last year every single player that the for anners cut other teams took a long hard look at to the point where we did see a poaching we saw IL Manning I think he signed with the Arizona Cardinals last year the forers wanted to keep ilm in the building they weren't able to at the cutdown similar Dynamics might happen this year teams are going to be hovering around like vultures they're going to be waiting to see who the 49ers cut coming this week because they have such a good roster so right now the 49ers want to be as tight lipped as possible K Shanahan was as tight lipped as possible about who they really like because they're going to be trying to sneak guys back in after they cut the 53 now there are some mechanisms that the 49ers can use to protect as many players as possible for example this year injured reserve there are two designations for return if you put a player on injured reserve right at the time of the cutdown so if you look here through who might be eligible for one of those uh then we look at guys with longer term injuries like a John Feliciano and Ambry Thomas for the 49ers and there was one more that uh also got hurt that's going to miss about half the season Ambry Thomas was the forearm uh Kalia Davis Kalia Davis I would also probably think about as an injured reserve player I have Kalia listed on the 90 man roster over here because he's still technically on the 90 man they haven't designated him to injured reserve yet same with Ambry Thomas I don't know where I have Feliciano I think I I already put Feliciano on IR but those are all these are all minations that I'm gonna have to address over the course of the next few days when some of these moves become official for San Francisco I got to get some of this footage from the Epic bike ride today around the city and the Epic swim I'll tell you about the the seal encounter here in a second but I got to get some of this footage up and ready for you guys I am actually exporting it in in the video editor software as we speak and as soon as it's up then we're going to be able to put it out there but anyway that this is the 49ers in cutdown mode we'll talk about the offensive line we'll talk about the defensive line and and the linebackers in the secondary in just one second right after I show you this since I can't be outside right now since I have to sit here with you guys which I love doing by the way but since I can't be outside what I will do instead is show you what the outside looks like today in the Bay Area so this is right by the Golden Gate Bridge like I said you know I swam the Golden Gate from point Bonita the lighthouse under the bridge a few months ago and I got seasick because it was extremely choppy and turbulent out there if I would have swam the Golden Gate today I would not have gotten seasick I mean look how pristine that water is pan over to Baker Beach and the Sea Cliff this is sped up by the way that's a time lapse big container ship going under but they call this area right to the west of the Golden Gate Bridge The Potato Patch Legend has it that it the water was so violent there and typically as so violent there that and I'm going to pause it right at the Potato Patch water is typically so violent there that back in the day when they had potatoes coming on ships to the Bay Area the potatoes would fall overboard and so they called it the the Potato Patch they also call it the washing machine as you can tell right now it doesn't look like the Potato Patch or the washing machine but when I swam through it from the lighthouse over at Point Bonita I went through the washing machine and that's what caused the seasickness so what happened is our route started right the boat dropped us off early in the morning right in on the left you could see the lighthouse where that land is jutting out into the ocean we had to Sprint across this way the shipping channel as quick as possible because one of those big container ships one of these guys right here was on its way so we made our Sprint across while it was really turbulent and then we came back in through the bridge and it was not a fun memory but today was a a fun day to go out and and look at the Potato Patch and the washing machine when it was turned off apparently all the clothes were drying today so the washing machine did not need to be on anyway back to the Ford aners 53 man roster sorry I needed a break so we talk about the cutdown along the offensive line this is going to be fascinating to me because I want to know if nent and Kingston two really good-looking Rook and you I I could play that video from yesterday about nent and Kingston um but there's there's puny there's nent there's Kingston these are all guys with fast short shuttle times all guys who gave up very limited pressure over the course of the preseason I I want to know how many of them make the 53 man roster and and if the 49ers can fit them on the practice squad and it's the balance between making sure that you are safe with higher floor linemen right now versus making sure that you are building this team for the future because I really do believe that puny Nan and Kingston could be fixtures for this offensive line 60% of it moving into the future on rookie contracts players that have impressed with their pass protection right away so who plays swing tackle is it GNA be Jaylen Moore how many backup interior linemen do they take on the 53 B and zakel are obviously two contenders how quickly is Aaron Banks able to come back from the broken pinky all of those are question marks for the 49ers up front as they try to field a better offensive line and better pass protection than last year I have them taken nine offensive linemen on this initial projection I might change my mind I always reserve the right to change my mind as we move forward uh because we're going to be getting different pieces of Intel maybe the 49ers even come out with a wave of roster Cuts before they come out with the longest part of the roster Cuts so as that happens then we'll obviously uh adapt everything and and we will react to everything using this sheet this depth chart as our base this has eight defensive linemen making the 49ers team we'll be eight we'll be nine in the past we've seen them take 10 before I don't know but they need at least eight to run a rotation they could obviously call guys up from the practice squad as need be a lot of it will depend on the health of etour girl Matos and Leonard Floyd and that brings us back to the injury report Leonard Floyd is dayto day you two gross MOS is weak to week then you move on to the linebacker position Dre Greenlaw obviously on pup so how many linebackers do you carry on the 53 that's obviously not counting Dre green law well it's Warner Campbell I I know D Winters is hurt now with the ankle I could shade him here in pink there's Flanigan Foles Curtis Robinson Jaylen Graham and then Tatum bethon this is one where I'm like gosh you know this guy's been playing well seventh round pick out of Florida State the 49ers want to make sure that he's part of the mix for them well if that's the case if San Francisco does want Tatum bethon on the 53 man roster then somebody's probably gonna have to give way to Tatum bethon are there any trade candidates here the 49ers have traded a linebacker before around this time of the year this regime has remember Dakota Watson back in the day that was he was you know more of a strong side linebacker wasn't really an off ball linebacker Edge rushing type but um that was in I think 200 18 I want to say I think they got a seventh round pick from Denver for Dakota Watson they also traded Jonas Griffith I think that was also Denver right Jonas and Jonas Griffith was an offb linebacker seventh round pick so somebody like Curtis Robinson you know the Ford aners value that linebacker position so much and it's paid off for them it's it's really helped them combat the type of offenses that are copying their own offense I think the Rams for example they're they're thinking about trading Ernest Jones I four now good good linebacker for the Rams of the Rams and McVey they've not put nowhere near as much emphasis on the linebacker position it's probably a big reason why Shanahan has won the vast majority of the games that he's played against the Rams because the 49ers offense is able to take advantage of that weakness but when you you look at uh the the emphasis that the 49ers have placed at linebacker it's created a factory at that position and that factory has allowed the 49ers to trade uh excess Talent at that position so we've seen it with Jonas Griffith we've seen it with Dakota Watson and now we will see if potentially we see some of that this year because I do sent a log Jam with Tatum bethon not necessarily a sh to roster spot right now despite the fact that he's been a good tackler and and a good Defender especially against the run over the course of this preseason cornerback is Samuel wack gonna make the team I don't know did he put on a good final audition three pass breakups he did give up that touchdown where it looked like he slowed up so that wasn't good they don't have to worry about the Ambry Thomas situation in as far as the 53 man roster goes they can use one of those IR designations to return on him with the broken forearm but I mean you know I I do think that you still want to make sure that veterans are on this football team you can't you know over prioritize the young guys of course Renardo green is going to make the roster but I also wonder is Rocky gonna be above him on the depth chart to begin is Renardo gonna have to work his way to Leap Frog into more playing time going to be really interesting for what is the the most uh talented group of cornerbacks the 49ers have had ever since Shanahan and Lynch have taken over then of course you've got the safety position and I've got to bring it back to the safety update Malik started Malik Mustafa alongside Jer Brown against the Raiders but it was because George odm rolled his ankle in pregame warm-ups odm is okay now so before huanga comes back or until hufanga comes back I would think your top two safeties are Jer Brown and George odm speaking of Trades it assuming Mitch wowski is ready in time what do they do with Presley Harvin I thir who had four punts down inside the 20 in week two of the preseason is he I mean he was a starting punter for the Steelers is he gonna have some trade value for the 49ers I don't know somebody like Harvin obviously excess at the position assuming wishnowski gets healthy we look at somebody like Curtis Robinson Demetrius flang and fos but probably a Robinson younger player hasn't been around the league quite as long has had a nice preseason he could be trade material for the 49ers it's it's it's all fascinating stuff for San Francisco we've always talked about Elijah Mitchell as somebody who might draw interest from the rest of the league at running back a position where San Francisco is really really loaded the problem with Mitchell has been the injury history but we'll see what the 49ers do at running back with so many trusted names like Matt breida like a Cody Sher H Patrick Taylor jior I thought ran really well against the Raiders it looks like they do have a surplus in that room as well but they probably will want to try to insulate themselves from injuries as much as possible then obviously at quarterback well maybe prior to the deadline you you have a little bit more of a a trade opportunity when guys start going down but I do know that teams around the league are interested in Josh dos there'd be teams around the league interested in Brandon Allen if the Ford Anders cut him probably you know the most logical candidate would be the Tennessee Titans with Brian Callahan who was Do's offensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals before Allen came to the 49ers so that's that's a look at that 53 the 49ers are indeed in cut down mode do I do questions do I not I'm not sure we're going to put this back up at the top of the screen showed you some nice sites from San Francisco looking for my notepad oh here it is yeah I'm gonna wait into the comment section where there's like 545 comments and again I should emphasize that trades are not likely trades are hard to execute And Trades are probably most likely ahead of the cutdown but ahead of the trade deadline sorry the cutdown is now now but they are possible so we should always just be mindful of all those Dynamics somebody says don't look at the comment section it's a trap I'm looking I don't know if I'm gonna put comments up on the the screen right now you can post all your questions and if I like one of them then I'll put it up there but right now I'm chilling sometimes delving into the comments section it it can be a trap sometimes so you got to convince me to do it there have to be enough good questions can't just be you know sometimes I'll give an injury update and it's like oh hey here's what the status is on Leonard Floyd and you gross MOS and then I go to the comment section and somebody goes so how long is Leonard Floyd gonna be out and it's like you are literally watching the video which is the injury update on the player that you're asking about yet you're still asking about it so I don't know if I should answer your question because it's apparent that you haven't really been watching or listening so that that that's one of the reasons I don't like to weight into the comment section all too much will we see a wave of roster Cuts tomorrow and then we have the pre apology from Strawberry reacts don't worry not talking about you um I'm sorry if you already answered the 49ers have in the past sometimes given a a short blip of cuts earlier on and then they've turned around and and given the the master list as I like to call it later before the cutdown like usually an hour before the cutdown sometimes it's been after the cutdown so they might a lot of it depends on how you inform these guys and you know this is a thing that I really want to emphasize right now these guys are human beings these guys I mean and when you get cut it's like getting fired you're getting called up into the office and they're telling you you got to leave and even if you do get reigned to the practice squad it's a massive uh paid emotion so it's really important to not be callous about this kind of stuff it's important to not just say oh let's look at the spreadsheet oh yeah like you know that guy's not going to be on the team this guy's not going to be on the team these are actual n dreams for players and some of them unfortunately you know their best opportunity is happening right now and if they get cut that might be it so you know it's hard not to look at it as a big list of cuts but I try to look at it from the perspective of guys that are working really hard to achieve something that they've tried to achieve their whole lives the amount of work that even a bottom of the roster NFL player puts in to reach where he's at combined with the amount of talent that's needed to me is really impressive you know I I I try to operate in in ways that I make my life as efficient as possible I try to work as hard as possible you know I try not to cut Corners so when I see you know a room full of men that that are doing the same thing uh then I try to you know really showcase that and I try to respect it with the the reporting and I think it's really important to remind people that that's going to be the case as the 49ers are in cutdown mode they're going to be a lot of guys getting disappointing news that we shouldn't just treat as another name on a list who got cut and when you realize these are human beings and when you realize these are dreams and when you realize this is the tough part of the business uh then then I think it increases your appreciation for the product that we actually do see on Sundays Mike did some math yeah 1,184 players will be fired across all 32 teams it's tough now I mean it's there's limit the reason the league is such a high quality product is because there's limited space right there are only 32 teams they all have 53 roster spots now there are different ways that you can uh you know manage to to get guys on stay in the building uh the practice squad obviously has 16 spots but there's also injured reserve spots and pup spots so you know it's not going to be exactly uh that that number above a thousand getting fired but you get the point right and when there are limited spots it leads to high quality play which you I think you obviously see it's the the highest quality play in the world the best league in the world but it also leads to a lot of disappointment when only a very very small percentage of football players are going to get a chance to see their ultimate dream I think Bo has a good uh Point here 1% of college football players make an NFL team so yeah everybody that's there right now was one of the best guys on their college team that's on the 90 man roster once you cut down to the 53 this is the best of the best of the best so remember that when you're yelling at the TV and you're saying oh he's sucks this guy sucks this guy was the best in high school was the best in college and was better than over a thousand guys that got caught in any given season that's how hard it is in a National Football League I mean this is the very very Pinnacle of competition those of you who just joined you go to the YouTube and you can check this out I've got the big piece on Isaac gendo up that I wrote uh coming out of the fort aners locker room in Las Vegas it was you know I could only handle Vegas 36 hours is my limit my flight was delayed coming into Las Vegas I think I landed at the game was at seven I think I landed at about five I think I made it to the stadium by sixish so and then I took off the next day at 10:30 a.m. so if we do to the math there 12 hours would be 500 a.m. and so I I was about half of my Vegas quota I was only there for 17 hours it was much more manageable than it normally is I even ate at an In-N-Out Burger in Las Vegas that was outside only that was also really really cool the the outside only in an Out burger right outside of allegion Stadium I want to see if I have a a video or picture of that I think I took one I was so tired after the game but anyway it was after I talked to Isaac gendo who's up there on the screen right now in the locker room and and we talked about the number 49 he's obviously going to make the roster this week the question is does gendo keep the 49 or does he move to the 20s when some of those numbers open up all right we got the all outside In-N-Out Burger as promised I have the video and I think you know what the deal here was is that it's an homage to one of the early intern Out Burgers which were drivethru only so transferring now check this out airdrop did its job as it's supposed to do its job so they have this little plaque and then you pan up and you order outside like they got the menu up on on the wall up there and they're working on the hamburgers and then they and they give you your order right right through through the the window and see I'm sure you've seen these uh Graphics or these paintings inside of In-N-Out Burger of the original one and you see the menu and it's like 5 cents or 25 cents for a hamburger um well this new one across the street from Allegan stadium in Las Vegas might be the modern version of those old drive-thru In-N-Out Burgers anyway that that's what I was up to on Friday night after I interviewed Isaac gendo for this piece so you should go to YouTube you should go to the description you should go check out the piece on Isaac gendo on the athletic sign up there do all that good stuff and um if you're on the podcast you should go subscribe to the YouTube if you're on the Twitter you should go over to the YouTube and hit the Subscribe button I only cross post some of these podcasts to to Twitter like once a week so your primary spot to watch and listen will be through YouTube or through the podcast so go ahead and move over there subscribe right now and yes hit that like button would be great smash it somebody asked me that White Castle now is in Vegas have I tried it no I'm afraid to try White Castle I'm sorry I don't think I could do it I've heard too many bad things about White Castle kind of like my wife is like you got to try Waffle House Waffle House waffle house and no I I'm I'm afraid I I just can't do it the the the C in me canot go to White Castle cannot go to Waffle House I'll go ahead and show you all the nice sandwiches that I'm getting in San Francisco I'll show you things like the Lombardi special which we will were able to to get the other day there serving that over a jump coffee and those are you know I would say fairly gluttonous meals but I'm sorry I I can't do it when it comes to Waffle House or whatever they call it White Castle I just can't do it so I'll show you guys the jump start coffee one at a later show I know we have way more viewers than normal so I I did figure it might be a good time to give you guys a a little bit of a look at at other stuff but I can't really find it right now I found that Golden Gate Bridge video that was neat but I already showed that uh yesterday I talked about the 49ers offensive line why don't I leave you guys with that we're going to play our 49ers o line video and I am gonna go enjoy the outdoors this is from Burnal Heights in San Francisco and I think that I tacked on some good stuff at the very end so everybody take care we will see you tomorrow but why don't you just make sure that you stick around for some talk about 49ers rookie offensive lineman rookie class might save the 49ers offensive line as we talk about Dominic puny Jared Kingston and Drake nent welcome from America's most beautiful city top of Burnal Heights I guess it rained twice today as I was on my way home from Las Vegas where I saw the 49ers top three rookie offensive lineman put on another great great performance and this has huge implications for Brock pie and this team both in the present and in the future because they've needed an immediate Improvement especially at Right Guard and Dominic pun is going to start at Right Guard and he had 58 pass blocking snaps over three preseason games gave up a total of two pressures one of the low lights for puny happened yesterday where he got crossed up on the stunt pushed back into Brock py that was one of the pressures that he gave up but pie immediately turned it into a highlight because Brock p is an elite quarterback and who's able to feather the ball over the linebacker in front of the safety to George KD that was that was the play on which puny gave up the pressure then there's jarck Kingston who came in a little bit later he's also been playing guard playing some tackle also during uh the practices for the 49ers and Kingston had 85 snaps and pass protection over the three games and he only gave up two pressures so in puny and Kingston you have two offensive linemen who ranked in the top five of all offensive linemen this year in the short shuttle the short shuttles how quickly uh measures how quickly a player can can Shuffle from side to side and that's obviously extremely important not only to run blocking but also to pass protection then you have Drake nent who scored very well in the short shuttle as well he plays a different position he plays center I think Center is extremely important to what the 49ers do offensively Kyle Shanahan has long pursued high priced centers remember Western Richburg unfortunately he got hurt in the 2019 season but then Alex Mack has been with Shanahan for three stops before he retired after the 2021 season well nent was an all big 10 Center at Michigan on a 15-0 national championship team for Jim Harbaugh the former 49ers coach the only reason that he wasn't drafted was because he's a little undersized for the position but he had 59 Pass blocking snaps over the course of this preseason and he gave up only one pressure which ranked number three of all centers in the NFL so nent he might be a practice SC Squad guy this might be a future project for the 49ers but I think that puny especially since he's already been named the starting Right Guard in Kingston they can help this 49ers offensive line immediately I'm making my way across burnel this is absolutely epic right above the the mission by the way we could step over here so you guys can get a better look at the mission behind me Twin Peaks is over that way Mike again being put to the test with the Wind coming over Twin Peaks from the Pacific Ocean it it doesn't get any better than this so this year the 49ers offensive line they ranked I think number 21 in pass block win rate last year I've been highly critical of the 49ers pass protection for years and I've always pointed it seems when when I'm criticizing this line I've always pointed at that right guard position first you can even if Colton mckivitz is not a good pass protector I know he had his struggles yesterday the the throw that Debo Samuel couldn't hang on to the interception Brock py had a fight against immediate pressure coming against Colton mckivitz but even if right tackle struggles the quarterback has a little bit of time to react and get away we saw pretty sidestep pressure from the right yesterday on the throw to the right to Jordan Mason but if pressure is coming right up the middle that's the Kryptonite of every single quarterback so you better have good blocking good pass protection from your guards especially with some of these these new age defensive tackles it started with the Aaron Donald Revolution some of these light defensive tackles who were super quick on the inside you need real athleticism that's why that short shuttle is such a good measurement and such a good predictor for offensive linemen who are going to succeed so I think Dominic pun's quickness athleticism and his anchor he didn't give up a single sack over two years at Kansas is extremely significant I think that the same holds true for Jared Kingston you have to look at these guys backgrounds right jerck Kingston was at Washington state in the air raid under Mike Leech so they hardly ever ran the ball so he really polished his game as a pass protector at his first up and then he transferred to USC where there was obviously more running happening and I think he's developed into a guy that can succeed in the 49ers system San Francisco is going to pass more than ever under Kyle Shanahan this year that's a testament to Brock py it's a testament to their weapons but it's also a testament I think to an improving offensive line Kingston can pass block we'll see when he if and when he is inserted into the lineup it's it's obviously been a good start to him and his rookie preseason puny is in the lineup he can pass block in the future it does look like Drake Nan also knows what he's doing but more development will obviously be needed but with more passing comes more responsibility up front and with a franchise quarterback like Brock P being one of the best talents in the game comes the need to protect him and I think that the 49ers are firmly on that track now there are still injuries and hurdles to overcome along the offensive line obviously colon mckivitz is not a great right tackle especially in pass protection but I think that puny has shown the attention to detail so far over the course of these three preseason games that indicate he might be able to help Colton mckivitz just some of the awareness to to be able to to step to the right make a little shove to the right whenever Colton mcit might need a little bit of help especially that one example against the Saints in the Red Zone on the throw that went from Josh dobs to Trent Taylor puny was looking for somebody to block and I guess he he might have even created a little bit of an issue that but his wherewithal mental wherewithal to quickly erase it was impressive to me he stepped on mckivitz his foot realized that mckivitz might need some help because of that because he destabilized his teammate so he gave a shove to the right side and then spun around when he didn't have a pass rusher to to pick up in his own Lan he spun around to help Colton mckivitz on the backside I mean really really good wherewithal really really good uh awareness for a rookie right and that's what we saw from Dominic puny on that play jerck Kingston he'll continue to develop into that role and Drake nen he's got a whole other list of things to worry about that begins with calling out the safety rotations and setting the protections for the offensive line because that goes through the center in the 49ers system all right we're going to finish up this tour and you know there was a prank I'm going to play the prank at the end John Feliciano and this is the part of the injury situation the 49ers have to overcome up front Feliciano surgery on his knee is going to be out for about half the season he's the one that pranked Dominic puny by pourn a bunch of Styrofoam into his car he said that puny deserved it I'm not so sure I met puny I met his parents seem like really nice people I don't know what he possibly could have done to deserve it I'll play the video after this but you got to take care of the injury situation where you don't have the insulation of John Feliciano you have to make sure that Jake brindle's knee holds up because he's got the knee tendinitis that he's dealing with here and he has been dealing with maybe even since last year maybe that marked the regression you've got to overcome the fact that Aaron Banks is going to be out until at least week one with a pinky injury I think that some there was some trouble over on the left side of the line yesterday the one pery sack that was the fault of Nick zakel the backup left guard and Jaylen Moore the backup left tackle just getting beaten by by a two-man Rush uh and and obviously you got to get Trent Williams back and maybe that happens this week maybe big Trent comes back this week that helps solidify the 49ers offensive line in the short term in the longer term you're looking at contributions from Jared Kingston obviously Dominic puny now and in the longer term and potentially even Drake nent but what a what a start for these rookie offensive linemen I think that's one of the biggest stories for the 49ers coming out of training camp there was yeah this is why you can't just go to to any Source on the internet and think that you know about the 49ers accurately oh they didn't you know they said they didn't invest in the offensive line well I'm sitting here and I'm looking at Three Gems along the offensive line based on what we've seen so far so it looks like the 49ers actually did invest in the offensive line and probably would have been smart to just sit back and see things develop because that's what the 49ers are doing now and these three guys puny Kingston and Drake nent they could spearhead uh a real turnaround for the 49ers P protection not just now but moving into the future all right it's Sunset signing off from Burnal Heights here's that prank video that John Feliciano was able to pull on Dominic puny so you'll see here that a lot of those Styrofoam peanuts I got this off of social media filled the entire car Kyle Shanahan didn't have much more Intel on this but funny stuff indeed and John Feliciano says you all know what y all did to deserve this I know I showed the Golden Gate a little bit earlier this was Burnal Heights last night just giving you guys the full view I'm sure the sunset's going to be just as nice to tonight too so just the weather in San Francisco it's awesome it it you know it's fogust in some parts of the bay area which I I'm looking at right here but but not not where we're at with the camera all right everybody take care thanks for watching you g to go sub to the channel check out the podcast we'll see you soon practice Monday Wednesday and Thursday this week
