Colorado State Football: Jay Norvell Post Practice (8/7/24)

Opening Statement you want guys are awesome no came inside no in AC and not out there Man educated guest he'd run out of that heat glasses you good yes sir you got it going yeah curious what's your philosophy on having your first padded practice also be your first scrimmage it's kind of just a product of new rules and um um you know I'm a little different than a lot of people um I go straight through the first two weeks so we get six straight practices in you know typically people scrimmage on Saturdays but because we started on Thursday we went six straight days and we pra we get our scrimmage in on Wednesday and uh that's because if anybody gets nicked we have more time to get him healthy before we play our opener so you know we'll have physical practices this week um we probably will not scrimmage and so um I like my team I just want to get us to the season and get us there healthy does it give you a chance cuz like you taught for five days or so with the young guys you put them in ped you get to see exactly how they apply what they've learned yeah I mean we really wanted to see guys block and tackle today um we can work a lot of our passing game in Skelly and in practice um but we really want to see guys tackle live and we want to see our young backs run we want to see our l o line block and and and our defense play run defense so got a lot of reps at that today um you know we'll see we'll watch the film I was pretty pleased with a lot of it you know we did a lot of had a good lot of good execution offensively um made a couple plays defensively um you know we were smart with a couple of our veteran players I mean we don't need to see Jacob Gardner he's got more starts than anybody in the mount West we don't need to see him scrimmage you know so um but um you know I I like our team we're getting better every day we have great attitude um and and we're looking to reach our potential which is exciting What did you see out of practice what did you see out there because you had the schedule to be like an hour you probably went an hour and a half longer than that were you liking some things or did you just no I wanted to see yeah I wanted to get some work I mean we got nowhere to go school's not in right now so we just wanted to take our time and get our work done and um and I was very pleased uh really got to tip my hat to the Mountain West officials uh Cal mcneel and his crew did an amazing job really was a a learning experience for our staff and our team and that's why I wanted to take my time with those situations there's a lot of new situations this year there's a new two-minute warning uh at the end of the game like the NFL and so we did a two-minute drill and we did a four-minute drill where we had to use that that uh that two-minute warning and so that was really good we learned some things from that and we want to be able to finish games with the ball in our hand on offense that's important that we can we get a lead we need to be able to run the football and um and hold the ball and finish within our hands and we did that with the ones there and I was proud of that you know we were in a situation a couple times last year where we couldn't do that and so we were making it a real emphasis we're practicing it every day and um we should see Improvement it's obviously really early in Camp but what are kind of your Ryback impressions Ry back Impressions obviously like Kobe wasn't out there how are you feeling yeah you know um you know Kobe's still got a hand deal we're being smart with him he's another veteran guy we know what he can do really want to see a heavy dose of Justin and and Damien um you know obviously Avery Keegan had a good camp overall it's a much stronger position than we've had we have more speed than we've had and I I thought we had some good runs today you know I was was anxious to watch those guys run and they did a they did a fine job I was proud of them and we got to build on that you know we worked really hard in this running game uh and uh I like a lot of what I saw today obviously there's a point where you're going you know have BR want Braden out there but how how How good is JB good is it for like JB to get a ton of reps he's obviously a young guy but important spot awes you know JB is such a conscientious kid um really studies hard um I'm just really proud of him you know when when he makes a mistake or he gets corrected he comes back again and he and he does not make the same mistake and so I'm so proud of him for that he's mature Beyond his years and so it's actually a blessing that Braden's not practicing right now because JB has gotten all the Reps and you know we may be in a position where he'll have to play so uh it's good that he gets the experience you did have one position obviously down left a pretty big hole but you're seeing you're bringing Jackson Vince has been here they both made play today yeah those are had to be things that you're looking at already early in Camp right I'm really pleased I was really pleased with Vince Young Vince today Vince really did a tremendous job um you know and and then and then Jackson has just had a really good camp as well and those guys are competing hard um they're big athletic guys um you know Jack uh Vince made the big play on the on the bootleg naked and and I was just so proud to see him finish and score so so that's really encouraging you know D left a big hole in US offensively he was a very productive guy and we need to we need to really step up at that tight end position to replace that production it's watcha season and of course tor's been Tor on a bunch of them but bitov was one that came out today you happen to know that guy for well you put in a call for Tory yeah Freddy no I do I did talk to actually Freddy knows all about Tori he's a big he's a big CSU Ram fan he watches us every week and he knows all about Tori and yeah I did talk to him about Tori and and told him about the progress Tor made and how much more physical and strong he is uh and I just think he's really he's put himself in position to take another step in his career and we're really excited to see that Darius is obviously a very unique Darius skill set to what you guys are used to I mean how I supposed to see him out there just kind of doing what he does best I knew he's scrambling a lot just kind of seeing how he's processing Things Early in his first Kamp it was his his baptism scrimmage he's a freshman so he had to get out there and get his college hits in and that was good for him uh to be live and and take some shots and um but Darius is a he's a playmaker you know he very accurate thrower uh he has a lot of Savvy he's still young he's trying to learn our system but um he's got a lot of ability and uh he's a he's one of those guys that scrambles to throw not scramble to run and he did that today a couple times but just excited about him he's very eager he's got a great spirit about him so um we're excited about him thank
