What the analytics have to say about Penn State's offense, defense, & Penn State vs. West Virginia

the analytics say that there are some concerns in this Penn State offense but Andy cotel Nikki has a plan to work around them you are locked on nney lions your daily podcast on the Penn State nney so we'll go offense defense and then how they actually match up against West Virginia in within two weeks here so max to start with the offense I think that's where all the question marks lie is that Andy codel Nikki comes in he's going to change up the entire framework create deception you know use a lot of motion use a lot of movement but they have drew Aller back they have Nicholas Singleton KRON Allen they make some subtle changes to the wide receiver spot Tyler Warren's back and the offensive Line's got got some question marks but analytically what does PFF and what do you have to say about could Penn State's offense really take that much of a jump forward with Andy C Nikki now calling the shots I the only reason I'm optimistic about it is because of K Nikki I think he's a terrific higher at offensive coordinator you mentioned all the motion I think Kansas actually ran more motion than anyone else in the country last year which is a really good sign honestly because you don't want to be static as an offense at any time and also they took shots downfield at very high rate and they used basically every blade of grass available to them on the field which is something that Penn State didn't do a lot of last year so I'm excited about that the reason why I'm pessimistic a little bit though the receiving core I think got worse I think the offensive line got worse I am worried about the supporting C Dre Aller once again and I am again I'm optimistic for Andy C Nikki because he's um he made the Kansas offense a top five offense in the power five last year well they didn't really have a lot of Superstar Talent on that offense so maybe you could do the same thing with Penn State um that's why I'm optimistic but Talent wise I do think they got worse uh than last year and last year wasn't great anyways to begin with so that's why I'm a little bit worried about this uh supporting C trala right now that's Supporting Cast that you mentioned it projects to be Trey Wallace as the number one wide receiver I think a rotation between Amari Evans and what they brought in with Julian Fleming out of the transfer portal a Tyler Warren at at that tight end spot so I I get it the wide receiver position isn't isn't a sure thing you have you know what what can Trey Wallace do as that true number one wide receiver Amari Evans really hasn't shown us much we know that he's really fast but is that going is that one player going to be enough to stretch the field in an Andy cotal Nikki offense Julian Fleming Fleming is still unproven however he is a really good run blocker and Max I think that's where some optimism could be had is that a lot of the reason why Penn State didn't have explosive run plays uh a season ago with a former five-star Nicholas Singleton a high-end fourstar in KRON Allen had yes to a scheme in Mike uch but the wide receivers just flat out couldn't block yeah I think that'd be a good thing that Jordan Fleming can uh can help block but I mean like I I'm more wor with the offensive line losing three really talented players to the NFL draft right I think that's another reason why I mean in The Run game we've seen time and time again is so predicated on how good your offensive line is and Penn States I'm I'm optimistic about with the with the recruits they have coming in and Cooper cousins can maybe make an immediate impact as a true freshman and all that but you Los got a top 15 pick in Old of fashion new uh there was a couple other guys who were drafted as well like offensive line I think was one of the only strengths of this offense outside Drew rather last year and I think it got worse uh so I think that's another reason again I'm curious to see what these unproven guys can do in that receiving core on the offensive line but we'll see again I like C Nikki a lot and I think he's GNA help Elevate the talent but um it's just the talent right now I am a little it's unproven I say they're not talented just really a lot of unproven stuff in the receiving cor of that offensive line right now let's let's talk about Drew Aller and then maybe go back to the offense let's talk about Drew Aller specifically how is Pro Football Focus accounting for his running ability because that's something that I've been talking a lot lately is that dreer's lost a little bit of weight there's word around camp that you know hey he's going to be more of a dual threat this season is Pro Football Focus accounting for that what is pff's take what is your take on the fact that you know all's legs could AC uh could be actively utilized in this offense to help them go down the football field yeah I think um we're counting it for a little bit I mean we're kind of really going off what we saw last year um I know you probably know more than us about what you're seeing spring practice and all that and how he looks out there so um when we're evaluating to we're really kind of just going off last year's tape for for everything for really but um and last year he he ran a little bit but not that much he obviously is a huge huge quarterback so um he's got more weight than most quarterbacks do to carry around out there but I think he does carry it very well uh and yeah I mean losing weights is that's going to be really interesting to see how he can affect the ground game this year and you look at that Kansas offense last year with Jaylen Daniels and Devon Neal like they had a quarterback that was able to stretch the defense out and um as a runner as well so they have that with a potentially explosive Run game with KRON Allen and Nicholas Singleton uh that's just another thing that defense has to be worried about really so I like der a lot I personally have him as a top 10 quarterback in the country I think a lot of the issues last year were not his fault at all with Penn State's uh supporting with the supporting Cass he had last year the play calling ad last year but um so I'm a big derler guy and I'm excited to see what he could do this year with Andy C Nicki but again that's just a Supporting Cast is once again the question mark what is the best version of this Penn State offense in your mind The Supporting Cast yes has its question marks offensive line of course wide receivers can they take that step forward but I think I think they'll be able to click around that midseason Mark USC and then there's that by week around the around the midpoint of the season and with a new off that's that's anytime there's a new system that's usually how it goes it's a slow start weeks one through five or a slower start and then they start to figure it out at that midpoint of the season if Penn State's firing on all cylinders what what can that look like from what PFF has evaluated yeah I think what it looks like is what C Nikki did at Kansas which is just like one stat I love and the reason why I I'm I'm optimistic again is I think Kansas was third in the country in receiving grade last year um and the only two above them were like Washington and Oregon and you think of Washington you think of romad dunza you think of Jay L Mill and Jaylen pulk and you think of Oregon all the guys that they had last year as well um I I need like Troy Franklin for example and then Kansas is like can you name a receiver at Kansas right now so uh they actually they really did punch above their weight class right so I think a cool nck could do that and use again every blade of grass use a lot of motion stress the defense out pre and post Snap um and what Dre Aller who can rifle it downfield let him throw the freaking ball down the field that's another thing that peny did not do at all last year he had the second lowest deep pass attempts rate in the country which is ludicrous for a guy who was an NFL caliber arm um so I think that's another thing too is I want to see them throw the ball downfield more um and I think that with K Nikki there hopefully fully taking control of that offense uh I think that they could do that again with all the motion I love the scheme that he ran at Kansas and again they really punched above their weight class at Kansas and big reason that was was because of cold Nikki um I'm hoping you can do the same thing with pen State supporting Casten um and help Drew Aller show that he is an NFL cerber quarterback and maybe could be a first or second round Prospect by the end of the year so you obviously liken this as as many people should when you're analyzing Penn State to what Kansas did but Andy cotel Nikki it when you look at Andy cotel Nikki's offense at Kansas the the ground game benefited a lot I mean Devon Neil was absolutely phenomenal and now you have that you have Nicholas Singleton and KRON Allen so it's just not the Devon Neil show and I know Jaylen Daniels fact Jaylen Bean right there were I know there were more elements to I'm not not here to car carry the water for the Kansas offense and all the players that contributed but my point is that the player to watch in this offense yes everybody's going to look to the quarterback and Drew Aller but I think the two running backs in Nicholas Singleton and KRON Allen because of what C I mean Kansas was so efficient on the ground game they were top 10 in every single category you could think of now you apply that with not one but two Elite running backs I feel like if Penn State's offense is going to be it to take that next step and really be in the upper echelon of offenses across the country it's going to be because not necessarily of Drew Aller but Nicholas Singleton and KRON Allen being at the top of their respective games yeah I think that's the best part of the offense by far is the r is the running back unit they have I think it's one of the five best running back units in the country probably argued higher than that honestly um I think that's the part of the offense you know you got a top 10 quarterback and Jer and then questions on the offensive line and questions that receiving core but I have zero questions that running back room right now now the question for Run game at least is going to be how does the offensive line hold up in it right because we've seen like I said it's more than just having star running backs you need to have guys that can block for them honestly you don't want them getting hit in the back field every single play so um I think that they have two really really good running backs two guys are probably top 20 running backs in the country um and I think that's going to be really good for that offense but again they have to block for him and that's another reason why I'm I'm a little uh Curious at least to see what this offensive line Looks like uh week one at least so that's the offense the defensive side of the football Tom Allen comes in as a new coordinator as well could this be a top 10 group once again we'll discuss that on the other side of this break and today's episode is brought to you by game time you got to team each and every day Manny Diaz set high expectations now Tom Allen takes over and Penn State's defense is loaded with NFL caliber Talent guys that probably grade out very we know they grade out very well in your mind and PFF uh in the database KJ Winston is a future first round pick Abdul Carter potentially a deny Dennis Sutton I think Kobe King is very underrated and those are just the core Four Guys Max those four players are are those that core or anybody else on the defense is that why you would view this group as a top 10 or a top 15 unit yeah I think top 10 easily honestly I think even after losing Manny Diaz I think it's a phenomenal defensive coordinator I'm wishing him the best of luck at Duke and I think he's gonna do a great job there but I mean it's kind of the I love Tom Allen I'm not denying that he's not coach I he's freaking Indiana head coach last year right so anytime you get a former head coach former power five head coach would be your coordinator that's always a good sign but other than that man it's kind of the opposite of the office in that like the talent they have is ridiculous right they have Deni Dennis Sun who could be a first round pick because a big year Abdu car I think will be a first round pick this year because how freaky he is uh and then you got um guys like you know Kobe King you mentioned him before he had a breakout year last year at linebacker I think he had a great year Dominic Duca didn't play uh a lot of snaps last year but when he was out there he was Elite right so he was really good um the safety room I really like as well AJ Harris coming uh in from Georgia really highly rated recruit as well uh mentioned Kevin Winston Jr is a top five safety in the country Tony Roos I'm excited to see what he can do in his sophomore year too so um that outside Corner Spot is a little not up in the air I I think there are guys to like there like I said AJ Harris um and cam Miller and Jaylen Kimber coming in from Florida I like a lot too but um that's maybe the oneish question mark on this uh defense maybe the D Tackle Spot a little bit too but I like what they have there too but really there's not a lot to question on this defense I think it's it's an elite defense and this is going to be once again the biggest reason why Penn State is a top 10 to 15 team and why Penn State is a playoff Contender is because of this Elite defense and I think that's gonna be what carries him this season when we're when we've been around training camp the word from James Franklin from Tom Allen is that the secondary is actually better at least that's what they're implying you mentioned AJ Harris and that factor K you know KJ Winston's a safety even though he's great against the run you look at it on Pro Football Focus he is great against the Run great and I don't think he's missed he's he hasn't registered a Miss tackle once in his young career either so Winston Jaylen Reed now zacki Wheatley is that true free safety over the top playing more of a you know Zone coverage center field type but Winston and Reed will be around the Box quite frequently you mentioned Kimber AJ Harris but my point is that Franklin and Allen think that this secondary can actually be better than what kin King and Johnny Dixon and dayquon Hardy were did a season ago and I think at points in time we might have been giving them a little too much credit and if you look at you know yards allowed per completion and everything else I think I think what was over overlooked was the fact that Penn State's pass rush and Manny Diaz's aggressive style of Defense kind of bailed out the secondary at times a season ago yeah I think that's fair um and I think you look at even the numbers from last year Kay came kind of his production dropped off the cliff right like he was a guy that was in a Elite Corner in 20202 and then in 2023 really fell off a cliff and went from a guy that I thought was be a first- round pick all the way down I believe he was taking the seventh round right by the by the Packers so um yeah so he he was a guy that was really really probably the biggest disappointment in pen season last year was cayin King other than the you know offensive struggles but um I I think I hesitate to say the secondary would be better because I really did like Johnny Dixon I liked um and dayquon Hardy as well um and they obviously had Kevin Winston Jr last year too but um I think it can be right I mean AJ Harris is a guy has a lot of potential we just haven't seen it yet uh because they Haven played as true freshman year at Georgia and really no true freshman play too much at Georgia either so um there's a lot of again it's just unproven right now as that's I'm you know Franklin probably knows better than me about what he sees every day in practice but I personally as a guy who saw last year and see the inexperience this year I hesitate to say it would be better than last year but I think there's certainly is a potential for it to be better with all the guys that they brought in how I I want to get to the question of the depth at defensive end and linebacker because of the news that immediately to start off training camp J Lions cavon key is originally suspended then ultimately removed from the team removed from the school these were both two deep players there was the optimism that jam Lions was going to be a rotational defensive end and that Deni Dennis Sutton role where essentially he is a co-starter he is the third defensive end he would have been a second string defensive end regardless same with Kon keys at linebacker probably would have been a second string backup to a Dom deuca and a 4-3 defensive look we have the idea that they're probably going to run a 425 base how are you PFF accounting for those losses of lions and keys to begin the season yeah I think I think it affects him um it's not you know a loss like a starter so at least it doesn't really um wouldn't affect my Outlook of this defense too much but it is you def that you're losing which is not never a good thing but they have guys other than that that I think could be good players outside of them to like Tyler Ellen for example I think will be backing up Kobe King in that middle that Mike spot um I think he's a really good dep piece at linebacker so I I love pen State starting three linebackers I love they're starting two defensive ends um but again if one of them goes down with an injury which always happens in the season obviously um that's when you get some question marks happen so we'll see uh we'll see what happens but like I said I'm so uh high on what they have in the starting unit that um I'm still really high on this defense but like you said if they do go down with an injury you know losing those two guys could end up hurting him long term is there an underrated player that whether it is Kobe King who we've mentioned or I I think this interior of the defensive line the the two starters which probably project to be a Devon J Thomas Devon formerly Devon Elise a Zayn Durant I I really think the defensive tackle group is very deep they they have talent but I don't know about necessarily Superstar power like an Abdul Carter Deni Dennis Sutton to a KJ Winston and a jayen reed type right but is there an underrated part of this defense that not enough people are talking about including Penn State people I just I I mean yeah I think the D tackle group I grew through is um is strong and that there's a lot of players that can be good players in that like Hakeem Beaman too kazai isard I think are two solid players too that think using that rotation so that D tackle room will be just kind of on a rotational basis like I know uh Thomas and Zay Duran are guys that are you're expecting to start but um I think that they're going to be using a rotational role a lot but the one unit I'm just really really high on it I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more National recognition as the linebacker room I I think that linebacker room is really really strong I think Kobe King is a really good player um Tony Roos was a highly ready recruit and looked really good when he was out there as a true freshman last year too so I'm excited to see what he can do as a full-time starters as a sophomore then I mentioned before Dom Duca man was was so highly graded whenever he was out there as well so now that he's a starting player I'm excited to see what he can do as well so yeah those three I love the the starting three linebackers that pen has right now and again maybe it's not the the sexy first round potential guys like AB Carter Deni that a sun in the edge room but I think that linebacker room is right out there with them as the best part of the defense an offense that has a lot of optimism if they can figure out some of the weaker parts of the unit and then the defense that's going to be the security blanket here is the fact that they can be around the top again and hopefully if they need to bail out some of the shortcomings of the offense but now how do they project against West Virginia Max I'm starting to get the uh the idea that this could be a higher scoring game and will me West Virginia make it interesting will they keep it close we'll discuss that on the other side of this break today's episode is also brought locked on College pen State versus West Virginia we are ever so close to that August 31st game in Morgantown and Penn State you know depending on where you look but it's consensus a n and a half point spread in favor of Penn State the total moving towards 51 a half and that has to do a lot with the fact that I think that you know West Virginia is really good offensively defensiv they're they're not that great even though they did bring in some reinforcements I mean they were pretty abysmal a season ago Max I got some push back on this from the from the West West Virginia point of view the defensive line that front seven I I thought the secondary was very bad and PFF also adds that the the defensive line wasn't that good to begin with it was one of the worst in the country in terms of generating pass rush I a lot of people hang their hat on the fact that oh they had 33 sacks as a team they led the Big 10 in in Total Team sacks so they couldn't have been that bad right what is the true assessment of how good that defensive line and the front seven of West Virginia's defense are yeah I think their pass fresh is the biggest question mark right now for this team and that's what we wrote about in our preview of the of the Mountaineers so um they I believe where were they they among the 20 worst teams in the country and pass rush win rate about 29% uh they lost two of their four starting defensive linemen um including Jared Bartlett who was the only one to have a six 5 pass rush in grade last year so that pass rush is a little bit uh is a little questionable right I think TJ Jackson this the transferred D tackle they got from Troy is a really good player but he's more of a really good run Defender um so I think the run defense would be okay but that pass rush is a little questionable now I will say the secondary for West Virginia is really good I think they brought in a couple really good transfers from Northwestern and Jem Joseph and Garn Hollis Jr that really help out I think Aubry Burks their safety is a top 10 safety in the country as well but the uh at at least for P's offensive line that we mentioned before is a little bit of a question mark on how many new starters they have I don't think it'll be as big of a first test as you might think for with going against Western that that' be at least something good for P's offensive line that it won't be as difficult at least to start off at the gate um but yeah I think that that pass rush I think is the uh the question mark for the Mountaineers right now where can Penn State's offense I guess for a lack of a better term expose West Virginia's defense where are the weak points because as you you said they they the necessary reinforcements a team that in terms of allowing explosive plays was outside of the top 100 like West Virginia's defense was very bad at times and they got into these shootout type of games albeit it is the it was the Big 12 Conference where there's a lot of offense and not so much defense so where where can Penn State offensively with a new coordinator in cotal Nikki and you know supposedly a new look Drew Aller but even with the question marks where can they attack this West Virginia Defense I think it's be him up front I I think you have to have your offensive line impose their will in this game and I think KRON Allen Nick Singleton could have big games in this game I think they're gonna be relied on a lot and I think having giving Dal time back there right don't Don't just run the the quick passing game Concepts where he gets ball out within you know one and a half two seconds let him stand like give him time to stand back there and take some shots downfield with these receivers right I think that's another thing too so I think it all starts up front as is every football game honestly but I think this is a opportunity for pen State's offensive line to shut some of the critics like myself up and uh and say hey we are going to be a good unit this year so um I think pen State's offensive line is gonna be the key to this game and because I think like I said the westg D line is Is Not Great there there are some question marks in that D line um and there are question marks in Pen's offensive line too but that that is the matchup I'm really looking forward to seeing as two units with question marks and pen so line and West D line who ends up winning that battle and I think whoever does um would win that side of the ball honestly which could be uh really interesting in terms of rush yards allowed per play a season ago West Virginia ranked 89th so there are opportunities for Penn State's ground game to really get going if the offensive line does allow it now stopping West Virginia Garrick greens listed as a Heisman Contender at least he's in the Top 10 rankings because he can do so much he can throw the football but his a his best asset is his legs he's a dual threat quarterback West Virginia returns him Jem white and CJ Donaldson all guys who rushed over seven yards so you have 2,000 plus yards of production coming back from three players you have a Bruiser and Donaldson wh's an electrifying player that can do a lot of things with his Speed and Agility how do you stop the West Virginia offense aside from stacking the box and trying to play a quarterback spy on Garrett green I think you have to win up again the Run game is like you just said is the big key I think West vir has a top 10 running back unit in the country probably a top 10 ground game in the country too with Garrick green who's an electric player as as a quarterback running the ball I believe he led the country in rushing touchdowns last year by a quarterback or at least he was up there um Jem white led the as a true freshman last year Jem white led the nation in yards per carry uh about I think eight yards per carry or right around that so and then CJ Donaldson had a great year as well so they bring back all those guys uh Wyatt milm at left tackle is one of the best offensive tackles in college football as well so I'm excited to see AB quter or Deni that St how to do against him right um the thing I would say for Penn State is went up front with against the ground game but make sure you have the guys deep because Garrick green all he does is take shots down field he had the highest average at the Target in college football last year all he does is is just rifle that ball down the field so he's either running or he's uh taking a shot down he a lot like the big 12 version of Jaylen moroe a lot right where it's like he's either gonna take off and run or he's going to throw the ball as far as he can right so I think derck green excellent deep ball thrower but wor he gets into problems is when you know it's a short and intermediate game so I think Penn State give up those plays give up the short game right give up those short and intermediate play make him beat you underneath um and don't let him you know go get over the top on you so I think that's it's kind of a a little bit of a weird way to play because obviously you want to stop the run up front which means you got to commit more guys in the box but in obvious passing situations make sure you have the guys deed because G green is going to be looking to push that ball downfield as much as possible and he pushes ball downfield more than anyone else in college football right right so um I think that's the key for penate is make sure he just doesn't get over the top on you and just maybe give up the the easy you know five and six yard completions every now and then just to make sure he doesn't you know go over the top and uh hit the big one on you which receivers should Penn State be focusing on the most is it trying to account for Preston Fox a Jaylen Bray a Justin Robinson who they brought in a Cole Taylor because we saw that Penn State's defense wasn't exactly great when they faced tight ends so who's going to be that you know and and you mention a lot of the passing so Cole Taylor who's a tight end is going to be that under underneath short to intermediate route in in pen state in Penn State's case who do they need account for most when it comes to any of those passing targets I think it just be Jen BR a guy is interesting coming in from Oklahoma State um he'll probably be uh their starting I think slot receiver or something like that uh for them this year I I don't really think there is a true guy I I don't know if there is like I like Jaden Bray I like Cole Taylor Cole Taylor was is a really really interesting player I think he's a really good receiving weapon he's a tall tight end to a six fo seven um Preston Fox is a is a solid player Hudson Clem is proba me one of the other starting receivers as well he's solid but like there is no true number one guy for this West Virginia offense I think that's that's another thing that fantasy's got to account for as G green is going to be able to distribute the ball all over the field uh when he is passing the ball so um I don't know if I can answer that I don't know if there is a true number one guy I think Jaden Bray's guy that I would probably look out the most for um the guy that I liked from Oklahoma State but I don't I don't really think West has too many you know Alpha number one receivers on this team I think they're kind of just a really good complimentary unit I think this game is relatively close I I think Penn State wins and and you know with with with all things equal right now you know any any training camp news could could come out at any given time until August 31st but if all things you know stay consistent right now I think Penn State wins I think West Virginia covers that you know give or take 10 n point spread and the total ultimately goes over Max are you expecting a high-scoring game are you expecting West Virginia can they legitimately pull the upset here or does Penn State just have enough to go into Morgantown and sneak out with a win I think they Ken I think West Virginia is the top 25 team in the country um so we had him at least number 25 in our ranking so I think they K pull it off especially in a you know in that environment I think penate does win though I agree with you I think West covers that spread I I I think this could be a single possession game um I think Penn State will win because I think the defense is going to is really going to step up when it needs to um I am worried a little bit about the ground game with West Virginia and the fact that you know Garrick green can go over the top and is one of the best defa throwers in the country but I think they'll do enough and then I think Penn State offensively can really impose their will with KRON Allen and Nicholas Singleton on the Mountaineers and hopefully drewal can uh find some deep pass attempts of his own in this game as well so I I got Penn State winning but I do think West Virg covers that spread uh and maybe it's a closer game than most Penn State fans would would like to believe it will be he is Max Chadwick of Pro Football Focus college football analyst he is the host of pff's college football show you can find that on YouTube and all of his work will be linked down in the description Max thanks so much for the time and the analytical perspective of what Penn State will be offensively defensively and how they will match up against West Virginia in due time thanks so much for the time as always thanks Zach and be sure to let me know down in the comments what you think about Penn State's offense and defense and how they'll match up against the West Virginia Mountaineers if you enjoyed this conversation please leave a like on it share it with friends and family I'd greatly appreciate it and if
