Penn State quarterback breakout incoming? | Beau Pribula player profile | Interview w/ former coach

yes the backup quarterback Bo prula could break out this season but Andy cotal Nikki's got to find a way to work him into the offense more you are locked on nit Lions your daily podcast on the Penn State nit Lions part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day let's get to know Penn State quarterback Bo prula a little bit better today and who better to ask than his former offensive coordinator and this is lockon nitty Lions I'm your host Zach Seiko and thanks so much for making us your first listening watch every single day we are free and available wherever you get your podcasts including YouTube that is Shane Brion he is currently the head coach of Mifflin County High School football was the offensive coordinator over at Central York and coached Bo prula who is now the backup quarterback at Penn State Shane thanks so much for the time excited to get your thoughts on Boer also wrapping up the show you know with the outlook for Mifflin County this season but let's let's start with what kind of impact Bo can make the player that he is and how he would fit into this new look offense and from what you've seen from afar you know I Andy coton Nikki comes in and has you know he's used two quarterbacks he's had a pretty elaborate system and how he got creative at Buffalo and Kansas so how can Bo perula fit into the equation from what you know about Bo and then what you've seen from Andy cotal Nikki system from afar yeah I think anybody that knows bo uh you know knows what he brings to the table um I think you saw some of that uh when he was able to get his opportunity against R I believe it was ruter last year when Drew got hurt um and then in the Old Miss Bull game he did some things there to spark the offense a little bit um you know I think when when you watch the ruter game in particular um you know was a very competitive game ruter is well coached on defense um and you know we were struggling a little bit but uh you know when he came in you know the the game opened up the Run game opened up because now you have a real threat of a running quarterback so it's another person that uh you know the defense has to account for um and most of what I saw when I rewatched it when I watched it again was um it looked like a lot just a lot of RPO stuff that Bo was doing and they were they were calling um and I think Bo you know he only threw one pass I believe in that game but you know he had opportunity to throw more but it was RPO stuff and he read every single one perfectly and either handed the ball off or or ran the ball himself uh due to a called Run Run play so to the quarterback off the RPO so I think that's what Bo brings too you know he's a very smart kid um he's not gonna he's going to make the right reads uh he's a student of the game uh he takes pride in that and um you know all the conversations I've had with him in the offseason here he loves the new offense um you know and and like you said coach coming in different different offensive coordinator coming in uh who who has employed two quarterback systems before um I think it's a great opportunity for Bo to help the team and I think the guys you know his work ethic I know I think you know from just from afar like you said um I think those kids are inspired when he's in there and uh you know they play hard and um yeah and I think that's just kind of the respect that they have for him that they want to play hard for him uh and that's what we saw High School too so so now what are your personal expectations for him I I don't necessarily mean stats but just at the end of the day do you believe that he plays more compared to what his red shirt freshman season held uh do you would Penn State be smart to run a two a two quarterback system I'm not saying you know that's 50% Drew 50% bow that's but the two quarterback system does implement systems where or plays packages where both quarterbacks are on the football we saw that with Trace M Murley and Tommy Stevens can that benefit Bo here or do you think he will be strictly a wildcat quarterback and he will only play as the backup unless Drew is hurt yeah yeah I think U my expectations for B are just B to be B um I think that's going to be good enough for him to to get on the field more um you know hope he plays more um you know my opinion if wish he had a bigger role against Michigan Ohio State last year I think those games might have been a little bit uh different but that's my opinion I'm just a high school coach we're all waiting for it yeah um but you know I think uh you know the new OC coming in you know with his history um and I've sat in some Clinic speeches with him Clinic talks and he's very uh adamant that his philosophy is to use the weapons that he has uh to maximize offensive efficiency so um you know if that's you know throwing the ball 50 times with Drew that's going to be throwing the ball 50 times of true if it's running the ball you know more with b um it's going to be running the ball with b um you know or or a mixture of both and um you know I think one thing I'd like to see is you know you know kind of you know get defenses thinking Bo's going to be in the game and running the ball and then let Bo throw the ball a little bit you know Bo's most accurate High School quarterback I ever saw throwing the ball um yeah was just incredible be with him for two years um and I think that's the big you know big thing that uh you know I like people know is Bo Bo's he can throw the ball too he's an all State High School quarterback so it's not like he's a just a wild cat only kind of kid and if you look at his senior season he had a 71% completion percentage so that and and that's what we're going to move into is is him his skill set as a player what what are both strengths again you were his offensive coordinator you called plays for him so how did you maximize those strengths and I know the high school level is a lot different from the Collegiate level but both Bo put up some pretty gudy numbers in both his Junior season but especially his senior season as a quarterback what did Bo respond well to when you were coaching him and the plays that you were calling for y and Today's Show is brought to you by LinkedIn jobs when you're hiring for your small business you want to find quality professionals that are right for the role linkedin.com lockon col that is linkedin.com loock onol to poost your job for free terms and conditions apply no talk about B's strengths a little bit you know his strengths are many um leadership being probably at the top of it um you know he's the first kid in a weight room uh last one out a lot of times um on the field throwing the ball before practice staying after practice throwing the receivers um you know he has a drive to be the best um you know he's a great teammate and person and uh you know he was a great role model for the program essentially working all the kids in that area um right you know Bo we came in and it was the co year first year there um you know we did zooms Bo picked up the offense really quick he studied it he asked questions to coach yanchuk um you know about our stuff um and we had you know look had Zoom meetings um so um you know he picked that up when we get on the field you know it was just like he was in the offense for years so he's very smart like I said student of the game and um you know we would Implement some new game pans plans some new pass Concepts week to week to attack defenses and he would pick them up we wouldn't even have to worry about it um you know we knew he was going to make the right reads and he understood what we were trying to trying to do and um you know one thing about Bo is he always you know you know when you talk about stats you know a lot of times he didn't play more than two or three quarters in in some of the football games we played in because we were you know we had we had some really talented kids around him too um so his stats could have even been better in high school than they were um but you know B embraced the challenge when we played hard teams you know he embraced those challenges and he wanted to prove himself and um you know I think he did a real good job doing that now as his former coach you know him just about as better you know just about as well as anybody else what are his weaknesses I think and a question that's been commonly asked among the Penn State media is just what what is who is Bo perula as a as a passer because at one point in time he did only attempt one pass and he was being strictly used as that dual threat quarterback only as a as a second runner to whichever back was in the game next to next to him Nicholas Singleton KRON Allen so in short what are his weaknesses or maybe I can rephrase it and say where do you think he still needs some development to be kind of more that complete college football quarterback yeah I mean I'm not a college coach so you know those guys are more up to speed on on on a lot of that that stuff but as far as weaknesses I don't think Bo really has many um some people say you know um maybe he doesn't have the the Deep ball arm strength um I've never seen that I mean I think he can throw it far enough okay I don't think you have to throw the ball 70 yards down the field to be successful so um but you know I think with any athlete in a high level high level sport or a high low athlete in a sport you know just perfecting a little things I'm sure the his coaches at Penn State have done a good job of pointing things out that he needs to improve on and and Boose is the kind of kid that's very coachable and if he gets somebody that gives an opinion on something he can improve one I guarantee you he's going to be working on it um on a daily basis uh to to to make that right so um you know he takes you know you know you know constructive criticism to heart and he'll work to improve like I said and um you know he'll get better and and how what how did he improve when you were so follow-up question to that what maybe were his weaknesses when he was for you know a younger so this was four five six years ago of course you know now he's a red shirt sophomore his third year at the Collegiate level but I I guess I'm looking for how he was as a student of the game how quickly you know you've alluded to that that he quickly you know learned and and everything else but could you Shane could you put this that into perspective of how quickly he was able to grab a hold of a concept or something that he was struggling with and then eventually turned it into a strength or at least made it not a weakness yeah I think you know when we first got there and he worked a lot with coach Yan Chuck uh that first that first summer coach is you know quarter you know the quarterback Guru kind of um you know he works at SVS Sports um with Jim KFI giv quarterback lessons so but a lot of it was uh his ability to pick up you know his his reads um I think the offense we brought in was kind of it's an air rate offense it was um you know rebased um and B was able to pick that stuff up really quick and I think it helped him accelerate um you know his game a little bit um having that hey you know okay this is the concept we're running the stick concept here's my re that's not there where am I going um that kind of stuff um I think really helped B uh get to his you know he was able to get to his second and third read sometimes um and I think that's the biggest thing I saw him improving was um you know a new offense picking it up and and you know going through his reads and and making the right choices and today's episode is is also brought to you by game time you got to download the game time app about Bo is that he's kind of sticking this out through and through I know he's an in-state quarterback he's from the state of Pennsylvania he likes Penn State a lot so this was his dream school all along but coach from from what you know and the conversations that you have how has Bo handled being patient behind Drew Aller being that second quarterback where Bo is good enough to be a starter at a different school it might not necessarily be maybe a big 10 school but I i' and he's a division one quarterback I think he could play at another Power first school especially in an offense that compliments him well so in this day in the transfer portal what is it about Bo prula that has kept them at Penn State to be patient to wait it out rather than looking elsewhere yeah yeah I mean I first off I agree with you and I think Bo could could start many other places um uh but you know one thing about Bo Bo's a competitor um you know I know he wants to be the number one guy um but you know also know that B's A Team guy and a great teammate and um you know rest ass short he is pushing Drew um in practices lifting workouts everything to be the best that he can be you know while B's trying to be the best that he can be so I think you know kind of iron sharpens iron a little bit you know I think it's one of those situations in my opinion um you know but as far as transfer portal you know um a lot of people have different opinions on it um you know but Bo's always been a big Penn State fan from what I understand from this you know from his background and um you know I think that's helped him accept his his current role a little bit um you know he had offers to go many other places but uh you know he stuck with Penn State and um you know and B's the kind of kid that he's not going to shy away from competition so I think you know a lot of times you see these kids go somewhere and I'm not going to be the starter and you know that's their that's your their prerogative to say hey I'm not gonna be the starter here if they realize they're not going to be that then they go somewhere else and look uh and see what's out there and try to be the St because everybody wants to play but um is not going to shy away from competition and um you know I think uh you almost to a fault maybe you know in today's world but um you know uh but that's his character you know that's the way he was raised um it's a tribute to his parents his family um and the culture leag grew up in at Central York you know um Josh OS Oswalt started that you know that that kind of that culture there where you're going to compete and you're going to compete and you're going to compete and you know it's carried over with Jerry yanchuk there and um you know Mike says Ron is a big big influence there too um it's the tough toughness is in the kid and you know that comes from like I said his family and his former coaches and um you I don't know what the future holds for Bo here you know this year after but um I do know that he's a competitor and he's not going to shy away from any competition and he's going to try to be the best that he can be while pushing other kids to be the best that they can be I imagine that because I I can't foresee B transferring out uh ever the the idea is that you know his time will invest and and pay off here Drew eventually goes to the NFL and then Bo kind of takes over as that multi-year starter to finish up his career because he has his red shirt sophomore Junior and senior Seasons available to him if he does in fact use that maybe plays again plays his way into an earlier departure for the draft as well if when he becomes a starter at at pen St but there's good competition behind him too so it's also about pushing through but also keeping other players like Ethan grunk me and Jackson smik at Bay since they are you know just as talented as the rest of them yeah is the the last the last specific question about bow what is what was that play or that moment where you said Bo perula is a dude this this this guy is you know competitive he he has everything you would look for in a quarterback and he can succeed at the college level was there ever that moment at Central York um yeah I don't know it was a play I think was probably the first practice we got on the field that Co year um okay you know just his accuracy throwing the football um his athleticism U moving around in the pocket uh they're just off the charts and um you know the respect that he he garnered from teammates you know they respected him they wanted to protect him um you know lineman wanted to protect him um and it was a great team culture there when we got there already um but you know he was a big big part of that culture and um like I said I've never seen a high school quarterback so accurate throwing the ball um running the ball throwing on the Run um or had to command in respect of his teammates like Bo did and then our first game I think we were playing Red Lion um I think we ran a flood route and uh you know the outside receivers are supposed to run a go to clear out well he he got a step I think it was Taylor right rolls got a step on the on the cornerback and B was rolling out and just threw a frozen rope about 40 yards hit him right in the hands for a touchdown and that's when I knew we're going to be okay that year that is coach Shane Brion on the other side he is the former offensive coordinator Central York who worked with Bo prula for the strong portion of his high school career talking to us about pula's progress and what can we expect from number nine this upcoming season and Coach best of luck this season at Mifflin County High School School in your third year thanks Z once again thanks so much for checking out this
