Joe Schmidt reacts to record breaking defeat to Argentina | Wallabies Post-Match Press Conference

[Music] thanks the game was kind of balance until thatp how much you learn about players field yeah you definitely learn a fe bit they learn a fe bit I think as well um you know there's few youth out there particularly coming off the bench and and it was a a very tough um period of time for them to to to play out that last 20 or 30 minutes until then um the game was as you say very much in the balance um you know to to lead 20 points to three in the first half and and then to be 2017 at half time it had swung a bit but but we were still in front and uh really disappointing to to fall off the edge um and then and then see half for play point you how tough is it when it just feels like get you up theow yeah obviously it was quite difficult out there another period And I guess just really looking looking to I change momentum and uh obviously that didn't happen and um they just would our forc errors would uh each time we did that they made pay there so really table for a green action there and we didn't find enough second half Joe you had a few games in Char now I just what your Reflections are in terms how yeah um again that didn't go completely smoothly uh either early on um we we wore a few losses but they they picked things up pretty quickly I think there was um shley was a lot older group we had mature players like Paulo Connell um Rory B uh Ken hilly Shan O'Brien uh Johnny 6on those sort of guys and while we've got a a smattering here we've got a lot of young guys I think um we've had 16 debutants and it's going to take a little bit of time to build uh a strength and DEP that allows us when we do make substitutions or when we are a few players short that we can still still sustain a really competitive just finally obviously the news this week going on this I'm not going to ask if that's Anno you but uh how you enjoy want pie over the two games consider coming out here in26 yeah I I I think the squad have really enjoyed it I think the time away will will stand to us um obviously we're disappointed with the with the second half today but we probably put three pretty reasonable halves together and um as I said fell off a bit of a cliff in that in that second half today so you know uh getting the time with the players and getting the opportunity for them to build um as a as a squad is always really positive when you're R out to it so um yeah we we we did enjoy it obviously we traveled through Chile on the way home um via Santiago so um yeah maybe that's something that could happen probably um the administrators make those decisions and we go we were told and try to put a DEC thank just start our first 30 minutes um like that seem like the best you guys play in4 how do you describe just like guess work that period that just translate from next 50 when you have SC defend your line yeah we I thought our discipline was good I felt like we uh we got the opportunity to play off a couple of really good solid set pieces um and I thought some of the running lines and timing and and breakdown work was really positive I I think the the biggest contrast for me was was that we just really struggled to win collisions in the in the second half um either side of the ball really but particularly defensively and once they had a us going backwards it was very hard to to stop them um either coming through the middle or or as we um tended to to condense our defensive line they they tended to to stress us on the on the edge there was a couple of times where I thought we' got the ball back and then they got it back off us and we were very much uh disorganized and and that was that was frustrating as well because um you know we actually gave ourselves half a chance and then gave them a you know gave them the back and and ended up chasing them around that lot almost coincide with Angus going off was that always the plan Southern at that period how conning was that drop off for you um no we we didn't have a hard sort of plan in the first half uh it was very very hot out there so we knew that there would be a bit of attrition and we would likely use the be a bit earlier um so we we decided to go around that 30 35 minute 35 minute Mark um and and unfortunately it it didn't just coincide with those Replacements um part of that is is is not to do with those Replacements but more to do with how passive we started to become and got put on the back foot we made a couple of Errors I think I think a kick era that allowed them to come into our 22 and then we had to uh defend from there which made it very very tough we gave up a penalty then and and and they just uh I suppose doubled down on the pressure they were putting on us you um I don't believe you've experience like lster and artist how do you respond and how youing this team back together against a w yeah it's a good question I think that's one of the one pro maybe one of the advantages of being quite pragmatic about it getting the stuff that we did well particularly in that first 30 minutes looking to to build a bit of confidence on that and then making sure that we uh steal ourselves for what's coming um with with some of the things that we didn't do well in that in that last cly that last 50 and I think the last 10 minutes um we were over chasing the game with a young group um and there's always the the risk that the score will blow out but at 4127 um you we're only one score away from potentially picking up a couple of bonus points at worse and and maybe chasing another chance at the game but um you know I think I think we just overreached at that back end and it didn't look great in the last 8 to 10 minutes what um you know disint the end of the game yeah I I guess you knows are going to happen I mean for a record score of 38 up against in New Zealand that's what they're capable of uh those teams score 3 points in that's what they that's what they can do they can score quickly on the back of some really powerful carriers uh some athletic uh backs and some smart um passing and thinking play and you as soon as you're not making the first forward SC you make the second or third one and through your line it's very hard to bre the holds after that so I am particularly disappointed that we fell off that uh that period of the game the way we did because I think the team are are building a real what they deliver and you know just pointed foures here another team and three of them um that we really competitive and so I'm not going to bury the SC on the basis that that one that one and a half is is not as well the um yeah well dut uh K well kicks down through the middle really well allow us to keep the pressure on territor um L that obviously took took a good Gap because he's he's got that acceleration maybe just moved away from his support a little bit and um probably just in the back field he's still got a um you know a few things to learn about making sure position right [Music] year time resp you you don't have to have to get out for a game see yeah I mean for me it's really the way the team respond now um they are that that proud young me and and C proud to to represent qual so uh that they would want to they would want to put their best forward be a pretty s flight home um and it's a long flight home so uh tomorrow morning we're up very early and and heading home and then we get a chance to to get a a little bit of a breather at least the players do and and then um try to hit the ground running and and we we prepare for for the BL Lo cup and last just Harry you got a message for Str fans of wake up at the score line just sort of wonder what just happened just keep the faith and you know keeping s of confidence their Cup Series yeah well I guess um sort of like on Jo said We we played some three really good cars before the four Gam there and it's so disappointing I guess the way we finish that game really feels not us and it is going to hurt a lot but we take a lot of positives from this tour at first game we were really really tough win there and we play some really good footing the first 40 so obviously it was a tough L for us today but um should keep keep trying to improve and I guess it's when you go the is pretty exciting um I've got one muray person you [Music] call um no yeah cool um just it's pretty obvious question but the draing room um cop I mean obviously huge disappointment but yeah just take us in five five the boys are are going at the moment yeah it's obiously pretty got ched um we love playing for our country um we love put everybody inone and I guess um to have a s that really does hurt everyone the next few days too but uh for us we just really got to take our learnings from that game and enjoy probably a few days off to refresh and get ready to come back in and be better football it's uh it's obviously Shing ches from last week's change room and um yeah much else thanks appreciate your talk thank you
