Georgia Tech tops Florida State with a walkoff field goal in the 1st college football game of 2024

well that was fun that was a lot of fun that was absolutely tremendous the the upset by Georgia Tech over Florida State the walk-off field goal in the season opener in Ireland I it does not get better think they'd win but I think I thought they would cover the reason was they will punch you in the mouth offensively they will punch you in the mouth offensively when you have four returning offensive linemen a 1,00 yard back a quarterback in Hanes King who's established who we know exactly who he is you're going to have success offensively and if you have some comments leave them I will try to get to them as quickly as I can but um I figured this was going to be Georgia Tech offense I did not think that you would see Georgia Tech offense offensive line even though they were experienced basically pushed Florida state three yards off the ball basically the entire game and that issue was never more prevalent than it was on that final drive where Georgia Tech flat out have called what the play was to the defense and there was nothing that Florida State could do about it Georgia Tech played man ball and Florida State had no shot they just had no shot now that was what I mean I that's Georgia Tech football I think there's a lot of people that will sit there and say yeah Florida State laid an egg or Florida State uh pulled a Clemson or all that stuff and look it wasn't about that it was about Georgia Tech playing Georgia Tech football that's the kind of game that Brent key wants to play they did it a little bit last year no one seemed to notice and when they did do it it was against Miami well they did it a lot but they did it against Miami but everybody just wanted to talk about Mario Christal's bad clock management but here you go this is what they are that's going to continue it's going to travel it traveled here to Ireland it's going to travel across the ACC and so I think it's time to start talking about Georgia Tech in the sense that look they're not going to be a college football playoff team in terms of their overall Talent level and what they actually can become they might actually make the playoff because they can win the ACC but are they National Championship worthy ABS I mean I I I don't think they're there yet but it's fair to talk about them in the ACC Championship race because all they need to do is get there and they have a head-to-head win over one of the teams that I think a lot of us thought would be a contender a superpower in a conference that doesn't really have a good definition of superpower now they have a head-to-head win so could they get there yeah they could get there and if they do what happens all they got to do is have 60 good minutes I think it was clear today in a via Stadium that they are perfectly capable of 60 good minutes and so it was very impressive I I think that Brent key deserves this for what he has been able to do in trying circumstances taking over for Jeff Collins it was a disaster this program was a disaster it was uh it took him a little while to sort of get his bearings as a firsttime head coach and he had a lot of pressure he told me this last week he has a ton of pressure had a ton of pressure from the from the alums because they knew that it was important to him personally not just professionally but personally and he has done a tremendous job turning this around so again this is Georgia Tech football when you own the line of scrimmage on both sides you're going to be successful and for Georgia Tech offensively we knew they were capable of that didn't know if they could do it as consistently against Florida State but we knew they were capable of that all they had to be was adequate defensively just don't be God awful just be adequate and because last year that defense was horrendous but if you know you have the kind of offense that can Pound The Rock drain the clock and then you can hit shots deep with a quarterback at Hanes King who's not and he admits it not the best passer in the world then you're going to win a lot of games you're going to win a lot of games and I think with the defense not being God awful you're talking about a fantastic football team talking that it's about the new people who left it is in a sense that one of the P people that left with Jordan is Jordan Travis and DJ can't stretch the field that's fair this team I don't think it was a case of them taking Georgia Tech lightly I don't think it was a case I know that it was not a case of them thinking about last year and I know it was not a case of them thinking that they could just run all over Florida State they took Georgia Tech series Georgia state Georgia Tech they took Georgia Tech seriously there's no doubt in my mind there's no doubt in my mind and anybody making jokes about last year I think is doing a disservice to the game of football to the game of football whatever happened last year doesn't matter doesn't matter what does matter is the fact that I feel like college uh Florida State fans I should say uh were lied to by dju lied to by this staff lied to by um an idea that things would just work out with a team of mercenaries now I think it's okay for some teams to go out there and hit the transfer portal extremely hard become a team like Old Miss where you live and die like that but you have to hit in Key areas and while I was a believer in dju to an extent I was a believer in dju when he topped 4 hyy in 2020 in the co year when Trevor Lawrence was out like gu Notre Dame I was a Believer him coming into this season when I thought hey with a an offensive line that's supposed to be fantastic and and a receiving Corp that while relatively inexperienced still is well coached still has talent hit the transfer portal with a couple players I thought dju would turn things around but it says an awful lot that Mike Norvell tried to hide his quarterback tried to hide his quarterback essentially the entire game now after halftime I think they knew they had to take some shots deep they did take a few shots deep you know they ran the football and in the appropriate time especially when they reached the 45 50 yard line they let DJ it it was either underthrown or thrown out of bounds and that was their worst fear and it came true it came true and I think moving forward they're not going to make a quarterback change but they're going to have to find a way to be more diverse in the running game and give DJ even more room they also have to find a way to fix the glitch on the offensive line and there is one but what do we always say a team improves most from game one to game two we'll see if Mike norell can do that judging from what I saw in this game I don't think he can I don't think he can what it it was it was pretty embarrassing that every single play it felt like there were two or three yellow jackets in the back field that's not supposed to happen that was never supposed to happen that was supposed to be one of Florida State's strengths and I think now if you have a head-to-head loss to a Georgia Tech team that I think can contend for the ACC title it's going to be tough the margin for error is zero the margin for error is zero I think though with with DJ he when when they realized when Georgia Tech realized that he was not going to be a threat they just absolutely locked down on the running backs it royell uh Williams and Lawrence toafili are supposed to be effective good solid consistent running backs after the second quarter Georgia Tech basically said what the hell we're not going to even worry about DJ because norell is hiding him we're going to stack up against the run and I mean these numbers royell Williams 12 attempts for 38 yards Lawrence St eight attempts for 32 yards they had 31 carries they had 31 carries and so they the game plan was exactly what you want to be balance balance 31 carries dju and 27 passes it all was supposed to work out and it didn't and moving forward I I just don't know I don't know what Florida State can do if you get pushed around on the line of scrimmage when you're supposed to be at your healthiest in game one you're not going to be successful that is true cousin Eugene Barry Christian Florida state is 0 for Georgia yeah they are and now look again with the Georgia thing I know that a lot was made of the Orange Bowl last year when everybody opted out for for for Florida State and Georgia whipped her tail and whatever I was basically a one-off game I'm not worried about that but they are over for Georgia they have a winning streak in the months of September October and November though I don't know what it is but it's it's pretty high it's pretty high for verts podcast everyone's going to be hating on FSU this week opinion on them and Mike norell has not changed FSU has flaws and Tech exposed to them that is correct that is exactly what happened I didn't think it would happen but I wrote this on outkick the defensive tackle spot the defensive line especially Tackle Spot was a point of concern they didn't Mike norell said privately and maybe publicly I think he might have that defensive tackle he was a little bit concerned they didn't have the depth so yes Georgia Tech exposed that I thought they could get the depth I thought that they had enough Talent on that roster that they could find a way to get you know defensive tackle number three number four number five into a rotation so you could mix and match and keep everybody fresh and it just didn't happen and that is that's surprise that's surprising way offsides Bill GT did what was Neary to start the season FSU is done Lawrence tisdell FSU is not good what a sad display I am so sick of hearing FSU and their fans wine just got Clemson by Georgia and just got beat by Georgia Tech Barrett s you have to light FSU up I have been for the entire show not all the show um am love the immediate postgame recap tonight after the game are you gonna do something like this each Saturday or an evening recap um depends on where I am it depends on if I to a game it depends on if um if I feel like there's an immediate postgame reaction for a specific game or um just some people um off the Record there's going to be some movement with um who gets interested in Florida State how quickly it happens and I I think it might surprise some of you as to where it would be it's not going to be the SEC can tell you that it's not going to be the SEC if you're if Greg sanki or more importantly um the 14 or yes 14 got the numbers are always confusing the 14 teams in the SEC for them to invite Clemson in Florida State or anybody they have to bring roughly $63 million in value neither of them do that and they hate to hear that but it's the truth Florida state is not what it was in the Bowen era in terms of visibility Clemson is not what it was um you know end of the 2010s although even then I don't think Clemson had enough juice to be worth 65 70 million um so SEC is not going to take them that's just there's no need to um Randy Mobley dju is Joe Milton 2.0 big body Big Arm but not special at all a step slow and inaccurate uh Joe Milton 2.0 is fairish but anybody who watched Joe Milton at Michigan or when he first won the job at Tennessee knew that he couldn't he didn't have curveball I think a lot of people got tricked by Joe Milton in that Orange Bowl three year two years ago three years ago two years ago um I don't know why people got tricked honestly I really don't all we heard for the past 10 months Lawrence s all we heard for last 10 months is how FSU is Elite barely beat a bad Louisville team in the worst game of the year in the ACC Championship Game got Clemson by UG and now a 12-point favored FSU got physically dominated by Georgia Tech they did get physically dominated I don't see why anybody would have picked Florida State to cover just don't I never understood that yes they were a double digit a double digit favorite I thought thought that Georgia Tech would have the ball late with a chance to win or tie turns out they he had a chance to win and they did it and look I'm going to the pub here there is a couple pubs right out outside I'm GNA walk back and I guarantee you there are Georgia Tech fans all over the place in fact when I went out uh after I did a serus XM hit uh to the outside Concourse you could hear them across the for loss a Georgia Tech defense that was flat out awful last year tackle for loss at seven and look at that final drive I want you to look at that final drive it is a masterpiece 12 plays 49 yards 6 minutes and 33 seconds and every single person in a via Stadium behind me knew exactly what was Georgia what Georgia Tech was doing and like I said start of the show Georgia Tech could have stood up they could have looked across the line of scrimmage and they could have told Florida State to play they could have yelled out the play and there was nothing Florida State could do about it absolutely nothing it's pretty amazing that in the fourth quarter a team that was that is supposedly loaded with super Superstars just still couldn't get things going it's pretty embarrassing and you got to be happy for the Georgia Tech faithful before we hang up Bobby Meer also our Braves to get us a win tonight against the gats and it's a perfect day I still don't know how the Braves have won seven to the last 10 with a skeleton lineup but man God bless him I wish I could watch him over here but I can't stay up until 2: PM or whatever it is 2 am. to watch them but um it's been it's been pretty amazing I don't know how um I don't know how they done it I don't know how these Birds um are ever going to leave too they have been non-stop since uh since everybody left they are feasting on leftovers which
