PTN Extra: Breaking down what Bobby Petrino said this week and SEC Basketball Schedule

[Music] welcome in BTN extra Courtney Mims alongside Mike Irwin here and Mike there's a lot of people out there that go wait I wish you did ask Mike more often well guess what this is kind of like ask Mike part two today we're going to be doing some extra questions about fall camp and mainly about offensive coordinator the questions come from you not from yeah not from viewers there're they come from me so there you go the questions are coming from me but we're gonna talk about offensive coordinator Bobby patrino and what he had to say just yesterday when we got to hear from him the second time this fall now that will probably be the last time Mike because as you and I both know we don't get to hear from coordinators or somebody need to get to Sam Pitman and say look you need this guy talking you know he's good and people just hang on everything he says he every time we have heard him and it's only been twice uh this fall every time we've gotten to hear him I'm like man this guy should be getting to talk yes you do we're going to talk about that and exactly what we learned from getting to hear from Bobby just yesterday so Mike I'm going to start by getting into the first question for you here which was kind of Bobby talked about the expectations of things right obviously with the 4 and8 season last year you want to turn things around and fast and in years past especially when Bobby was here before it was kind of a slower turnaround of things it took a little bit of time that's that's what I've been telling people look all these people that say sam Pitman is going to be gone on by Halloween and Patrina was going to take over and yeah y y look this is I saw this as a slower process because Bobby had a losing record his first year here he had a lot of things to rebuild the second year they were better the third year they were a lot better the last year they won 11 games there's only been three Arkansas teams that ever won 11 games so it got better every year and I still think that's what you're going to get with him it's just that it may happen it may be the expectations even on his part may be sooner because when he was asked about that he said something that I hadn't thought about and he said yeah that first time that I was here he said you're dealing with freshman and sophomore young players trying to develop them you don't have as many upper classman as you do now because you're able to go and get these people out of the portal when you have a problem you know you identify where your problem areas are like the offensive line they went and brought in three really good ones that aren't freshman they're they're I've experienced and and so he said because of that the expectations even on my part are that we improve quicker so maybe this doesn't take as long as I thought it was going to take I still don't think you can look for being right up there at the top of the SEC but I have no doubt in my mind that if Hunter year Che leaves Sam Pitman in place and I don't care what all these people say about he's not a head coach they don't know what they're talking about he's the guy that's put this staff together he's also the guy that led a staff which brought in all they identified the players they needed to get and it's not just with offensive line they came in and did some things on the defensive line they got some guys in the secondary they brought in some receivers even though they had were loaded at receiver this is a totally different team I mean I'm walk I'm in Walmart this morning there's two guys up on one of these elevated platforms that goes up and down and they're changing lights or something I know and there's a guy down below talking to them and they're talking about how this team's not going to be good they're going to win four games again and he's going you guys are crazy don't you know who their offensive coordinator is do you not know what he did when he was here the last time so I think patrino will make a difference but I still believe whether they win seven games this year I think you can expect nine the next and maybe 10 or 11 if they leave him in place as the offensive coordinator if Travis Williams stays here as the defensive coordinator this team is going to be competing at the top of the sec I believe that because those guys are that good and they're starting to recruit now they're behind in recruiting Because of where they were but if you look at where they should be based on winning four games last year and where they are now and then go look at their recruiting for for 20126 two years down the road it's looking even better yeah I mean they're up in top four or five right now in the in in in the SEC so yeah and we were talking about it on as Mike and again Shameless plug go watch as Mike this week because we had great conversation about people want to play or players want to play for Sam Pitman they want to play for Travis Williams they want to play for Bobby patrino you mentioned that video of the guys going up to the camera saying what's your favorite Sam Pitman saying if you if you think based on last year because there was dissension that they're all mad at Sam Pitman W him gone you're out of your mind these guys like him he's a players coach he was before the only time this guy really had issues was last year you can go back to 2022 and KJ got hurt and missed about four games and every game he missed they lost but that didn't mean the season was just worthless and so you're really talking about one bad year that he's rebounding from and I think he's going to stay here for two or three four more years I think that yeah and then I think the staff if this staff stays intact they're going to be really good I I think he definitely needs to have a a decent season to stay here I think if you go in and you only win four games I I don't see how he stays I I just don't know how they just win four games Mike I want to go into some of the things you talked about there a little bit deeper on what Bobby patrino said one of the things you mentioned was the offensive line and Bobby also mentioned the offensive line in depth in what he talked about yesterday I thought it was interesting that he kind of said that he was a little bit shocked you know going from how they did in Spring to how they started fall he was a little bit shocked that they were a little bit behind on some things but they've been doing better over the past few weeks and and that probably is because Patrick cudas is back now he's he's doing some things dealing with that back injury he missed like what 14 practices uh overfall so now he is back but am Maran Harris emerging at that left guard position you're manufacturing some depth there yeah this is one of the things that's caused the grumbling to start back up again because when Sam Pitman just said it wasn't a very good practice from an offensive standpoint he was disappointed and now patrino is saying that he's acknowledging I was kind of surprising to me that we finished the spring so strong and then we come back out and right off the bat it looks like the the the defense has the edge on us uh let me explain that two ways number one I call it the Travis Williams effect they are better on defense they are a lot better that D line is a lot better the linebackers are good so part of the issue here is that offensive line went up against a bunch of guys that got a lot better over the summer than maybe they did and they kind of had to adjust to that I think they had a lot of a confidence after that spring and then they come out and these guys are hitting them in the mouth and it's like whoa but they also had some injuries and and keeping mind that in that second scrimmage Harris went out too so you're Los you're toward the end you're working without both of them then finally there's some things about that scrimmage you may want to ask me about that we talk were a little bit misleading but Bob you're right patrino did say in this interview he said we we after that scrimmage ever since then we've I think maybe it wake woke him up a little bit Yeah Yeah but he also said what's been help and this is the other thing that that you have to explain to people and he already said this in that scrimmage he was taking his whole Playbook that they had worked on and just trying all of it to see what works and what doesn't work well when you do that you're going to have a lot of plays that don't work and he's making note of that and going okay we're not ready to do that yet that's not a good tail and green play this is a good tail and green play so they they made some adjustments and so now what they're doing and he was excited about it and the players were is we're working on our game stuff the stuff we're doing now they know you're going to run that in the game and he said we've looked better ever since we've started that yeah he said the the last four practices after that scrimmage that second scrimmage have been the best of Fes and some of the best and patrino is not a guy that makes stuff like that up he wouldn't just say it if it wasn't true no he very he shoots you straight and and you mention that scrimmage I do want to bring that up because some people I saw online were going wait how have we not heard more about this how are people not talking more about uh the second scrimmage and kind of the misleading stats there eight interceptions eight sacks exactly they're going wait wait how are people not talking about what Bobby is saying well we did and ask Mike I want to say that and some people did point out that you and I mentioned that second scrimmage and how were some things made well what happened is this is what Sam Pitman does he just giving you an overview of the whole he's not getting specific and he's just throwing some stuff out there well what happened after that scrimmage was a lot of the people in the media that were there started doing their jobs somebody told me the other day he said you guys don't ever do your jobs I'm like you're crazy you don't understand how hard some of those guys work um they started investigating looking around talking to Kyle Parkinson who the Sid was who was keeping the stats and so they find out that hey a lot of those sacks and a lot of those interceptions were by the third unit and the second unit you know it wasn't there that was the defense they they weren't doing it to the ones patrino did say the ones went backwards some okay that's not necessarily good but it's not like if the ones went backwards and so the picture that emerged from that scrimmage you mean the twos went backwards went backward ones did well ones were okay yeah you know T and green for instance apparently threw two picks and we didn't know for sure until he said this but only one of them was a real pick the other one was off somebody's hands and went went into the hands of somebody else so it's not his fault so if you're going up against a defense that good and they are good and you have one pick and there there was an 80 yard touchdown in that scrimmage that we didn't even know about no yeah and so and there was some running plays that looked really good to me too so I I just think there's been a little bit of misinformation and people are freaking out because they want to assume they're as bad as they were last year that's what they want to do so they can gripe about it but to be fair Mike and we we can only infer so much from the stats we are given we are given just a sheet of paper that lists out things that happen and and who and who did them it's almost like trying to be a detective all of a sudden you see a video of a guy going 80 yards and you're going whoa what's that he didn't talk about that nope you exactly so I'm just saying that it didn't wasn't as bad for the ones as maybe you thought yes if you're a viewer watching that that press conference absolutely but it sounded like patrino still wasn't happy with the way the offense performed in that second I what he was saying is I want my twos to be better yeah well you always do right you want your whole you on your whole team to be to be better but ton green he did say he thinks some of H how they've been progressing as an offense finding that identity tailon Green's been getting better oh he really likes him and he said the biggest problem he's had when I got him he's a 6' 6 inch guy who had a low arm slot that turned him into a 6'2 inch guy and he said I've spent all this time convincing him don't throw the ball like this get it up here to use your height because he can see now he needs to get it up where it doesn't get batted down at the line of scrimmage tipped you know as as that pass was so and again we keep talking about this I don't know if it'll happen or not but there's this rumor that t and Green's already told people he might come back because he want he likes the way he's being developed and he wants to go to the NL but he wants to be ready 20 he goes to the NFL and we'll see how fast he progresses I mean that's the big question with for all of us we can talk all day long about this stuff but until you see what happens you can't really analyze correctly I don't think we're there the biggest problem in August Camp is it's all speculation everything I mean you can base it on some things you see and maybe some things you hear about but until you play a real opponent and really more than one like you got to go to Oklahoma State and see how that goes and then you're playing the Aggies and some other tough teams early in early on but I just think he's really happy with the way tail and green has progressed and he's I think he's happy with with the way he's absorbed the mental part of it and the way he's learned yeah absolutely he said he's been more accurate he's and think about when people say there's no difference in this team and I'm not trying to to disrespect KJ but what you had last year at this time was a quarterback KJ Jefferson that was mad at the offensive coordinator because he thought he didn't know what he was doing and guess what he was right the stuff they were doing was wrong it wasn't working we saw in some of those scrimmages just there ear W in the scrimmage but in the some of the seven on seven stuff that we saw early on we saw all those screen passes that didn't work and all those guys trying to go around the tack the edges and those slow developing plays didn't work and then you get into the season and yeah it doesn't work well you don't it's a totally different approach now absolutely and that is the Bobby patrino approach which we've been talking about this entire time someone else I want to mention who's getting better and better and better and looking better as as uh fall progresses is a LC has yeah he really likes him and he talked about what he brings to the table what he brings to the table first of all to me is his hands he's got really good hands but Bobby said he's got body control in other words with the pass is a little bit offer off your ability to adjust your body especially with a bigger athlete not a smaller receiver but a bigger tight end adjust your body so you can make a catch and then he said where he's really improved and this is always what patrino wants from anybody that catches the ball from him it's all about running the precise route because when you when you design a play as an offensive coordinator it's designed to work if everybody runs those routes correctly when they run them loose when they make a little looping turn and a sharp turn when you're in the wrong place then it messes the quarterback up he said he's really gotten better at running routes and we we knew he was good before he's get got wide open last year before he got hurt more often than not yeah so I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do yeah and I forget all the time he was a freshman last year I mean a freshman I mean those guys I mean they are getting better and better and better I mean you look at him last year to him now he's even put on some weight he looks good I mean I definitely think we're going to see good things if he can stay healthy this year I'm excited to see him but Ty Washington in that tight ends room as well I mean that he's he's a pretty solid backup Bobby said I didn't know anything about him because he didn't go through the spring because he was hurt uh he said he's amazing he's big and physical runs good routes has good hands we knew all of that about him he just he had that one bowl game as a true freshman where he caught a touchdown pass and honestly that helped him win the game and then last year he was going really looking good and then all of a sudden hurt yeah him and has went through their injury recovery together yeah so he said I I'm really happy with him I didn't even know anything about him and then I started watching this guy and going whoa this guy's good too we got two really good tight ends yeah and then the other thing that Bobby patrino mentioned besides the players that he talked about and the offensive line that inh helmet game communication that's going to happen this year and that they're working out some of the Kinks with it R Jacob Morris actually asked him about how he feels about that going into the season well remember when on I ask Mike on Monday of this week when we talked about the iPad and the use of iPads and I said at that time this is a new technology and the coaches that use it better are going to have an advantage over those that don't well it's the same thing with this inh helment communication and Bobby patrino talked about it he said initially it was a giant headache because it doesn't work right you're trying to learn how to use it he said one of the things I'm telling you right now is we have to be prepared for it to stop working at various times cuz it's a new technology and they're still struggling with it making sure probably a year or two from now it'll be old hat but he said he said during just a regular practice he said I'm the guy that cuts it off I kind of guess on when it will have to be cut off so I'm talking to the quarterback but I'm kind of guessing when I cut it off he said when we got into those two scrimmages it it was done automatically and he said that's when you learn to adjust yeah and he said you can get halfway through a sentence and then boom you know that the quarterback can't hear the rest of what you said so now you're just sitting there wondering does he get it does he not get it did he hear me but because of that I think what they're going to be able to do it and I think because of that inh helmet communication when it does get cut off ton green he talked about T and green having the freedom to do check offs now that's every quarterback that can do that if you have a quarterback that can't do that you got a problem and he likes that and he and somebody said well the offensive linemen have said they liked it and he said well they're not the ones that do this the quarterback does it they're just going to do what he tells them to do but it it it is this technology how and and patrino seem to be suggesting this that it's really important for us to learn how to use this because if we don't so we're going to be playing against somebody else that's using it better than we do and they'll have the advantage over us so he certainly understands the importance of using it it's important enough that he said last year he liked being up because it's been a long time since he was just an offensive coordinator he was the head coach you got to be on the field as a head coach and you're calling the plays but he said he kind of liked at A&M being upstairs because he said you're out away from all the chaos people aren't talking your ear running around and you can think better and see better up there but he said you you can't do the in inh helmet communication from up there so so he said I got to be down there and he said I also want to be down there because I want to look in the eyes of a quarterback when he comes off the field and see that he understands what I'm saying you talk to somebody over the you've seen guys they come off the field and put the headset on you're talking to them but you're just probably looking at their back while they're you're upstairs while they're talking to them and you can't see the reaction that they have to what you're saying if you're looking at somebody in the face and you're telling them you can tell if they don't get it they don't understand what you're saying you can talk to them straight on so I just think all of these things are interesting that he's going to be on the field he's not going to be on the booth why he's going to be down on the field yes we got it and nobody even ask him about the iPod thing but I guarantee you the iPad thing you keep saying iPod I don't know why because I'm more familiar I don't have an iPad no but I have an iPod in my house I have iPods and I keep saying iPod Travis Williams said he got you though he knew what you were saying the other day that's why I do that because I don't have an iPad but I do have an iPod an iPod exactly um Mike that we just touched on some of the things that patrino said but that full press conference is on our website right now on our YouTube page you can go and watch it I do want to end really quickly because we have a little bit of time okay and so I really want to get your thoughts on this but the SEC basketball schedule we knew the opponents but now we know the exact dates for everybody at home who hasn't seen it um amazing director uh is going to pop that up for us there you go that's half of this uh SEC basketball schedule for Arkansas right there they kick off that SEC slate at Tennessee and then you see the month of January there I know a lot of people mentioning the February 1 date at Kentucky watching coach Z on the internet analyzed this and he said right off the bat Tennessee is a tough place to play yes he said it's better to play them right there because the students aren't there so it helps so it helps point he said you want to go on the road when the students aren't there that's a good point I like that was good um what I like I think and we're going to have to go through this I think well it's a New Concept but I understand why it's done it's it's to keep this travel thing the way you know what they're going to do is you're going to play two games at home two games on the road two games at home two games on the so you get into a routine or a rhythm and and they're I think they're experimenting with that and seeing how that works but I think that's going to be good um so we we were talking about what's the biggest game at home and Evan thought it would be Texas I still think it it's probably going to be Alabama they don't like Nate hog fans don't like Nate oats so he'll come in here and hopefully beat Bea Alabama and oh yeah that that would be great I think that's going to be one that a lot of fans are G to want to go to I don't think there's the anti- Texas thing so much with other sports as it is with football it's it's still there but it's it's more in football I'm just telling you it no it is you're right but I think it is there in other sports it's still they're going to it's still be a big deal to play Texas here yeah and in basketball but it's just not going to be the intense I'm I hate you guys we want horns down and all that maybe it will be because Tron Mark is coming back to Bud Walton Arena on that second match up with I don't think fans remember much about last year they probably go yeah didn't he play for us oh okay yes I think some fans remember I I think some fans remember but you don't think it'll be as big as I don't think it'll be like playing Texas here in football I'm not saying it's not big I just don't think it'll be the biggest home game of the year I think for me it's the same as you I think it'll be Al that Alabama game just because I think they'll they'll go into the season with a lot of preseason hype and yeah when Kentucky comes in next year that would be big yeah I just don't I still don't understand the SEC absolutely dropped the ball on this they should have had play twice that's what I would have done I would have Absol it's an automatic big deal game it's it's it's a draw I don't know what they were doing thinking there I I mean I get the appeal of Cal returning to R but bring Kentucky here too come on I mean that would have been huge the fans would have gone nuts I mean I just don't know how you drop the ball on that it's it's really not fair honestly it it really isn't I agree with you there Mike we're going to talk a lot more about basketball when we get a little bit closer to the season I know a lot of people want to know what's going on with football and we're going to respect that we're we're what eight days out from the SE from the season opener now I mean it's been a long summer the only the only the only real things we've had from a competition standpoint soccer started soccer did start so that's underway Y and there is a football game this week it's not doesn't involve Arkansas but then next week and then every weekend for the rest of the year there's football there you go and and we can all Rejoice over that am I right and shout out to soccer Mike they have a big matchup coming up this Thursday night it's a top 10 matchup against Mich uh Michigan State and go on the road and they go on the road for that one that'll really prove what uh kobby Hill Squad is about this season if they can go uh there and beat them so shout out to soccer shout out to volleyball they're also starting their season next week they're uh ranked right now in the preseason number 19 so in the top 20 and then soccer is ranked number nine this week I believe so look if you want to support other teams that other than football you have some ranked teams to support there too for the Hogs that's going to do it though for this week's
