49ers Dominate Aaron Rodgers and the Jets + Week 1 Winners and Woofs | The Mina Kimes Show

Welcome to the Mina Kimes Show featuring Lenny! [Music] welcome back to the minim Show featuring Lenny our first Monday Night Football recap of the season with Dominique Foxworth of the Dominique Foxworth show and a million other ESPN shows that he was on today uh as we did last year last couple of years we are going to talk about Monday Night Football and then we are going to pick a couple of winners and losers from the weekend uh I'm excited to get to that Dominique uh you were you were on it this week you sent me like a bunch of different app usually MNF Recap: 49ers Defeat Jets 32-19 I'm having a like it's early early season it was early to season I I'll get lazy as it go along but right now brighte eyed bushy tailed I found it harder to pick winners than losers did you feel the same way there's a lot of losers this weekend a lot of uh a lot of pretty Grim outcomes uh not so I would say for either of the teams I mean I guess the Jets it's obviously you lose by a pretty significant margin to the San Francisco 49ers would have been more if not for garbage T time touchdown by Tyrod Taylor um we're going to talk about both sides of the ball I think we should talk about the Jets first if that's okay ners fans because you know we didn't really learn that much about the Niners we'll talk about them the Niners look as dominant as ever I guess we learned that it doesn't matter if they don't have Christian mcaffrey at the last second it doesn't matter if Brandon auk tops drops a touchdown it doesn't matter if nothing matters nothing matters you're still a wagon so we'll get to that though there are some interesting things obviously incredible incredible per performance by the young running back uh Jordan Mason uh but we finally saw what we have been waiting not just the entire offseason but two years to see which is Aaron Rogers in action in a New York Jets Jersey uh and Dominique I want to start here I'm just gonna throw my overarching take at you and I want to get your read on whether you agree or not about the Jets this entire time really this off season but again it's been two years we have been arguing the premise of Aaron Rogers was this is a Super Bowl roster all you need to drop in is average Quarterback play Let's see what Aaron Rogers looks like my takeaway from last night was Rogers looks fine but is this a Super Bowl roster do you feel the same Do the Jets Have a Super Bowl Roster? way absolutely I mean I think I would my criticism of the team last night was less about the talent on the roster and more about the preparation for the game by the the game plan and the strategy it seemed like there are some things that come with playing in big games that you get accustomed to and it feels like that unit is not accustomed to it I always think back to like playing against Bill bellich coach teams and playing for Mike Shanahan when he coached me in Denver there was always a counter punch ready it's as if they knew that the other team was going to adjust and they had they weren't always right like they weren't undefeated but they always were ready for the adjustment to The Adjustment and it felt like last night there was there was nothing and I mean I'm sure sorry go ahead no no I completely agree I think that's true of both sides of the ball I mean starting with the offense um again to your point I thought before this game okay this Niners run defense was actually quietly pretty bad this year we've got Bree Hall we should be able to run the ball on this team and then it became very clear very quickly that they couldn't run the ball on them for a ly of reasons but the the most notable one was the offensive line was just not pushing them uh at the point of attack the Jets averaged 1.16 yards per contact per carry which ranked 31st in the NFL uh only the New York Giants were worse so that's fine but they just stuck Nathaniel hacket stuck with it on early downs and Rogers kept having to convert third and Longs and that to me to your point that's that's about in-game adjustments like I I don't blame them for coming out and thinking they could run on them but once it became clear they couldn't run on them your quarterback's throwing the ball fine for the most part we'll talk about him in a second I would just lean on that right the problems led to bigger problems we'll get to the bigger problems later but the running game problem was an issue and I think it would not have been as pronounced or obvious maybe I'd have come out of this game feeling a little bit lower on the offensive line if it wasn't for the fact that I when the Jets weren't on the field I was watching the 49ers offense and I was watching them design blocking schemes and running plays that set set up easy blocks and I didn't see that on the other side so like you just look at when the 49ers well first of all the 49ers are not interested in going to third down at all but when they get the third down it's third and short yeah and the Jets in part because they set up these blocking schemes and these um misdirections that put themselves in advantageous positions and I did not find that for the Jets the Jets was like this is a running play let's do it it didn't work do it again it didn't work all right Aaron spread them out rescue us and it's just not a strategy to be fair to Nathaniel hacken company it's a tough comp right it's this and it's kind of like week one generally I I talked about this on NFL live yesterday a lot of the great quarterbacking performances were against defenses that I think we're going to realize are pretty awful and a lot you got games like the Ravens wow is the Ravens defense okay it was Patrick Mahomes and I actually think the same thing kind of applies here when we talk about play calling the contrast was Stark I mean in The Run game guys wide open in the pass game you got Kyle check wide open down the sideline two two times it's not your night but it's Shanahan right like he and you like Jordan Mason was excellent I thought you know like it wasn't just all scheme he was getting significant yards after contact as well but that dude had a mountain of space in front of him they were moving and I think some of that is scheme to be fair and I think um you know they're going to do that to a lot of teams but I do think Dominique this Jets defense might be a little bit thinner than we thought and it's funny for all the talk about h u h reic not being there and we can they certainly weren't getting much of a pass rush I was looking at that interior that defensive line getting bodied I was thinking like what was the difference last year I mean they traded away Jonathan Franklin Myers which was like a weird trade that nobody thought much about but his absence was felt obviously CJ Mosley got hurt but boy they looked like a like the run defense looked like a huge problem in this game yeah run defense is weird I don't know I haven't put in the effort to think of the Perfect Analogy but in football run defense is the thing that you don't think much about but you got to take care of it because it's the easiest way to do anything and if you can't stop the run nothing else works you end up compromising the rest of your unit in order to slow down or stop the run and they couldn't it's not easy for me to to like to think about if it's Personnel or if it's scheme because so much of it last night both to me to be honest yeah yeah but it's hard wide they were in the wide nine alignment and it just felt like there were like oceans of space Sorry for the Niners yeah no no no you're right and that was the thing that's why it was harder for me because it wasn't um a series of we're just going to run power o or ISO right at you and blow you off the ball I didn't see that time and time again I need to see that a number of times especially for a defense that has the benefit of it out even with some guys missing what I did see more often than I saw that which not saying that they didn't get blown off the ball but I saw guys figure out the direction the play was going in after the play was already going that direction and then George KD was already on your right shoulder or uh uh puny was already on outside had you out leverag because they tricked you with because you don't have the discipline with your eyes to know what's going on and that could be on the players but it's also and that's to the point there's no adjustment now what do you do to fix that we had nothing yeah it it was I think that was probably the biggest shock the Jets defense putting up such an egg more so than I thought they'd be able to run the ball better but you know that one I think could have gone either way frankly because of the offensive line but the de this was this defense has been top three for several years now and I think there's major questions if they're not a top five defense again certainly didn't look like it but again they're going up against are probably the best offense in How Would You Grade Aaron Rodgers’ Performance? football how good does Aaron Rogers have to be to carry them and it's been actually six or seven minutes and we have not talked about the uh most important player of the night and or the most interesting player rather of the night one we have been waiting so long to see we finally saw him Dominique uh I had a lot of thoughts but I want to hear yours first what grade would you give Aaron roders on his first outing is that too uh take you want that okay no I'm fine with the use of the great construct my face wasn't because I didn't like the question my face was because like man it was fine like it's B like whatever you yeah you could throw yeah but the yeah this just takes us back to where you started this conversation and where I try to bring the conversation whenever we talk about this is the premise of the Jets is we don't need MVP Aaron roders yes yesterday they needed MVP Aaron Rodgers and if you're going to ask him to do that week in and week out that is a bad strategy particularly if he doesn't have the creativ that he used to be able to create with his athleticism yeah um I thought he was fine as well he can still throw the ball his arm looks fine live as they say uh you know uh it's not just like the ball place and obviously the free play ball was insane to Alan Lazar not just because of the free play aspect but the placement on that up the scene was but also just generally when you like some of those ball like the back shoulder throw to G Wilson all the like he's so good at placing the football away from Defenders protecting his receivers setting them up doing all of that he understands he he just understands leverage at a you know nuclear level that's true um he missed a couple throws Rusty perhaps and I think watching him Dominique if I had two concerns about the Jets offense three concerns let's see it would be one is this Aaron Rogers I thought looked good throwing the ball he can't move that's over so you got to protect him and it wasn't horrible by any means and mostly because he was getting the ball out very quickly but that is something to monitor pass protection because it is so important two um well I guess there's more because we talked about hacket at the beginning and and leaning on the run so there hacket remains a concern but my other concern is I don't do they have enough weapons because outside of Garrett Wilson not so great uh you know he got a couple of old vintage Lazard throws but I don't like Mike Williams was totally uninvolved tight ends weren't involved at all so that is something again that that's why I with Rogers because you're some of it is just Aaron Rogers but that is an issue I think because it makes this defense a lot easier to defend um and then you know three is is how bad the Run game looked that one I'm a little bit less worried about because I think it just had to do with the San Francisco 49ers in this game and generally the ners are just you know obviously I think they're gon one of the better defense in the NFL but um yeah it's he was fine and I think he will be fine but the ceiling seems somewhat limited by the things that I just mentioned and if the defense isn't Elite then suddenly you're just talking about a pretty good team this is why I keep coming back to coaching which is not very fun but I do think that we can't move the goal posts for this team this team's expectations is Championship or bus and they're going to have to like they're gonna win a lot of games I promise you just off of the game plans that they have now because most teams on their schedule this year are not as good of the 49ers but to win a Super Bowl they're going to have to beat at least three teams that are close to that level of ability and that's where the issue lies is and this is part coaching and we could put some of this on Aaron Rogers because part of again the premise of the Aaron Rogers thing is oh we don't need an Innovative Young Smart differen making offensive coordinator We Trust Aaron Rogers so while we can be critical of Nathaniel Hackett we also have to understand that Aaron Rogers kind of had friction with lefur because lefur was trying to do things that are more modern offense and Aaron Rogers like no just let me play and I I'm fine with it like in college in the NFL mostly in college though but in NFL sometimes you're just better than the team across from you and what you don't want to do is over complicated and it seemed like they were running simple stuff so particularly again they had poor on running the ball early or pour on early Downs so they're in thir third and long often and their third and long plan seemed to be we'll use formation to get uh a read on whether it's zone or man if it's man Aaron beat him with a throw you know like they're gonna be tight window throws and we saw time and time again tight window throws sometimes it worked sometimes it got tipped and turned to an interception you can't live like that against good teams if it's Zone get five out and then you pick the Zone apart but the problem with that I'm done now I'm the problem with that is you're leaving the tackles in isolation because you want to get five out so it just felt like there was nothing smart or Innovative or easy about it that premise and it honestly reminds me of conversation we had yesterday and live about the Bengals offense which you know similar thing like put the quarterback and gun read it out and just try to win and rather than winning through scheme right that's the Bengals it's what used the bills were used to be at time like it's just a different a style of offense that is increasingly out of Vogue in today's NFL um if you can't run the ball not only are you putting your quarterback in third and longs to do what we're describing but suddenly uh they're able to get put exactly the bodies and coverage they want on your best players so if you can't run the ball and everyone knows you're trying to throw it to Garrett Wilson he becomes a lot easier to defend and you just can't get mismatches the way the really good offenses are doing and that's going to be an issue um one more thing about the Jets before we move on do you feel like let me put up a number quick 30th in pass rush win this week Brock py actually did struggle when he was pressured but he was rarely pressured in this game do you feel like his on reic uh earned himself any money in this game or do you think that uh this just the ners and they're just gonna keep waiting this out yeah I don't think it matters whether it's just the ners or not I think he definitely earned something like all only thing that was missing was him sitting in a box like Chris Jones last year with with h his agent he should have done that to remind people or send is he tweeting is he instagramming like you got to troll right now right now is proper troll period let's see if he's posted anything I all I know is I know he's on Instagram because that's how we saw the picture of him in Japan I believe okay Assan reic no no stories no activity last post July 16th come on man maybe that means they're getting a deal done maybe he's he's not reminding them that they need to pay him because they're right now figuring out how much to pay him he has an energy drink brand all right the aforementioned 49ers um also pretty I thought he looked good I thought he looked just like he did last year um you Brock Purdy vs. NYJ: 19-29, 231 Yards know not perfect some misses uh beautiful by the way he wasn't particularly great Under Pressure but he did have that one beautiful throw to auk that he dropped in the end zone which was pretty tough on on Brandon iuk but that was a great ball um you know he was exactly who they always need him to be which is an efficient accurate distributor of the football uh I think I mean seeing how well they ran the ball without Christian mcaffrey was just a reminder of Kyle Shanahan's just absolute dominance frankly um as well as yeah sorry I did the thing I hate that I do is just we give too much credit for Shan we talk about the Niners offense but I'm sorry come on you and I talked about at the top like the contrast and play calling in this one was so unbelievably Stark Dominique yeah I mean I we can give credit to the players who they certainly deserve it I'm a player I should do that you know who jumped out at me is Debo Samuels it seemed like they were like all right you know who was here at Camp Debo we're going to run everything through Debo the beginning of this game this is why though like I think that they ended up paying iuk is because no CMC it's like okay well we got you know our our run scheme is pretty is excellent and dvo Samuel can do a million things in the back field auk was the only one whose you know production they couldn't replace turns out they didn't need it I mean that's the hilarious thing no CMC bad IU game and against what we thought was going to be one of the best defens in the NFL and it just does not matter um did you so I I do I do want to go back to the ners run defense because that was really the biggest problem with it like I think we forget like that was the Achilles heel of this team in the playoffs I mean uh you saw last year in the postseason actually teams were doing to that ners defensive line what the ners were doing to the Jets in this one uh on the perimeters you know just using those um tight ends and you talking about some of the offensive linemen to generate Mass mve rushing Lanes um but I thought they were pretty impressively stout in this game cross the board I thought Hargrave looked better than he did last year against the run so I I I don't know I MNF Recap: 49ers Defeat Jets 32-19 mean I feel like very like if I had to be one maybe surprised by anything San Francisco related that would probably be it yeah I didn't think it was going to be this easy for them on defense um we we don't know how good the Jets are though like there's so many new parts to the Jets like we know that Bree is good but we don't know this offensive line um but yeah I don't need to be a wet blanket on it they dominated a NFL football team at the line of scrimmage on both sides that's that's I mean that is what all coaches dream of and that you are going to have a chance even if your skill players are hurt or they aren't good if you can win the line of scrimmage it's going to make life easier for everyone tackled really well which was you know a problem for this team last year as well at times but when you face a quarterback like Rogers in this one who's very intent on getting the ball out quickly it matters a great deal and I thought um impressive across the board um dador Lenor had that big uh play the pass breakup that led to the interception um super sticky coverage on so many plays in this one like it it just the Jets felt really really really really tight and some of that was because of all the stuff we talked about schematically and the nature of the offense but a lot of it also was because this nners back seven I thought played super well yeah still stay in tight even the the good catch that Garrett Wilson had on that first drive still wasn't easy yeah I mean just being close to him enough times you're going to lose a good amount but sometimes you're going to break it up and it's going to bounce to a linebacker and you got to turnover it's just a hard to hard way to live if you're a Jets uh offense and it's a really nice way to live if you got talented uh guys in the back end for the 49ers so one final question for you about this game generally and just kind of coming off at the weekend that I thought about watching these teams um do you walk away feeling like there's any Credence to like the oh maybe guys should play more in the preseason with regards to the Jets I mean TR Williams didn't play didn't even practice and he came out and didn't allow a single pressure but that's not it's Trent Williams so I don't I don't particularly care but you know it did feel like and and so I I bring that up because you know Brock pie played that half and he played like a lot of preseason football this offense was out there Kyle shanan played as starters uh Andy Reid played as starters I think the two most impressive teams of this entire weekend given the level of competition were on the Super Bowl champions shocker both of whom did so that's that that needs to be take that needs to be factored into this these are very very good teams we expected them to be very good teams they looked a good team like good teams however I did feel like some of the teams that didn't play at all like Rogers and the Jets it did feel like maybe we should have gotten Aus rep out there yeah I mean I don't understand it I think that there's you can go too far and obviously it's different for different teams different for different people but a team that has never really been a team before obviously yeah right you need to be out there like I could understand if the 49ers were like nah we good which they ostensively did with some of their players were're like ah no prese preseason for you guys and the same thing for like the Ravens and the Chiefs and teams that are like kind of stable and know what they're doing but for the Jets it seems obvious that it does not it's not going to hurt you and if you're trying to protect Aaron Rogers it's like if he can't survive a a I don't know a half of preseason football then your season's done anyway I did a show NFL life with Herm Edwards the day he didn't play in the rain I remember I think Herm said players gotta play like you know what ain't wrong okay uh let's take a break come back and pick our winners and wols of the weekend why should you bet with Caesar's sports book two words Caesar's rewards every bet brings you closer to the types of benefits only Caesars can offer hotel stays VIP experiences Sports and concert tickets and more it's not just an app it's an Empire all right we are back with winners and wols I feel like I miss H Week 1 Winners and Woofs with Dominique Foxworth tag it's wols it's wols I heard that I didn't want to call it out I didn't know why we were changing things I thought something but I just got to sit back I liked your winner a lot let's start with your winner who did you pick Gerard Mayo Week 1 Winner: Jerod Mayo got his first win against the Kansas City or not Kansas that would have been really impressive the Cincinnati Bengals who always start slow sorry go still pretty impressive biggest underdogs of the entire weekend picked in like aaz zillion Survivor leagues so yeah the Survivor leagues were turned on their heads this week with that game I mean I I was really impressed it was a defensive powered win as we all knew that it would have to be for this particular team I like it seemed strategically the it's a team that loves man coverage and you go up against uh Jamar Chase situation you feel like that's not going to work out in your favor but there are very few teams that have as many talented um man coverage players than the Bengals and I was expecting to go look at the stats and see a lot of pass rush winning and that number was yeah it's like just straight up coverage and and again it's like it dub Tails a little bit off of the conversation we were having earlier because they won a lot on early downs and it made the late Downs more difficult Patriots defense still great was my big takeaway I and I this was I'm smiling because I was you know this was a take of a preseason take of mine a lot of my takes were proven wrong but this one I feel like uh was substantiated and my fear of uh living on the mountain was the loss of Christian barmore no doubt and then um you're losing Bill Bel but you know everybody kept saying inside the building no no no this is this is why they picked gerro Mayo he he was linebacker coach he we trust him and Demarcus Covington who's the defensive coordinator I had heard only amazing things about but I wanted to see it and I wanted to see it against an offense that I think most people you know will think was going to be one of the better ones in the NFL and I I don't care that it's September I mean I'll talk about the Bengals side of it when I preview the games next week um I thought the game plan was brilliant played a lot of man coverage to your point like not many defenses can man up again it's a lot easier without T Higgins no question but um they have dudes back there Christian Gonzalez buddy he was Sensational in this one but also Dominique I this was just so interesting to me to watch because I I was watching to see okay what went wrong with Cincinnati and I actually it actually felt a little consistently forced Joe BR to do which is check it down yeah I don't think it's an arm strength thing with Joe bur I think it was much more about the Patriots defense than any limitations with the quarterback yeah it was just why I wanted um Mayo as my winner it didn't feel like it was issues and I I know the um Bengals have a reputation that they've deserved as starting slow and Joe burs coming back from the wrist injury and Jamar Chase hasn't had camp but if you watch the game maybe those things are true maybe they played a part but it wasn't them there blowing the game they were the the pets were taking it from them and it was really impressive particularly without the pressure it's one thing to uh to dominate at the front which is probably the easiest way to like be successful in offense or defense is just dominate the line of scrimmage when you're not dominating the line of scrimmage and you're still winning that's talent in the backend that's scheme that's intelligence that's um film study preparation like that's where that is and that is why Gerard Mayo is a winner because it all falls on the head coach they they look like they have the last few years they they play as one they tackle they don't have stupid mistake like it's just this defense is awesome and there there's a lot of really good players I mean talked about Gonzalez Jonathan Jones is excellent this one Keon White had some really huge plays which is massive for them uch as well um no doubt and I I think it's funny I did uh I went on Taylor Kyles as a Patriots podcast he covers the Patriots for clns media and he asked me to to pick like a MVP in the Patriots defense and I couldn't pick one and I and I was like dude like I don't know who the MVP is it feels like they have so many a minus players but like that's great right although Gonzalez I think could end up being that dude but this was before the season so anyways uh I love this pick the other thing about the Patriots by the way getting the dub is it was really kind of like the perfect Patriots game for this iteration of the team which is they ran the ball extraordinarily well Jobe brette didn't make mistakes that's going to be the formula like for them regardless I mean we'll see if they make the quarterback change um I will say running the ball that was a little bit harder for me to um gauge because I think the Bangles run defense is just awful and they were awful last year I thought they were really I was they were really just dominating them at the point in attack with the downhill run game but I don't know how much that particular aspect of it will translate yeah hopefully I mean for Drake May's sake like he'll get in there if they can continue to play defense like this and continue to run the ball like this then he'll be safe to learn earn on the job until then jacobe out there taking them shots good luck buddy oh boy all right Week 1 Winner: Kellen Moore and Saquon Barkley uh so for my winner I'm doing I'm cheating and I'm doing a double winner and I'm going back to Friday because I haven't had a chance to talk about that game I'm doing a combo Kell Mo saquan Barkley um who were the two Eagles who I came away I mean that's not they're the ones I was most impressed AJ Brown and Devonte Smith remain just absolutely astounding but they were the new pieces and they were the biggest questions coming into this team and I thought were both uh tremendous in Friday's game Barkley I mean God just so explosive so good as a pass catcher uh adds he he just has so much more juice it's funny because Eagles offense has been so good running the ball for year for the last few years during the Jaylen Herz era and it felt like oh it doesn't matter who's running the ball back back there it's the same thing well it does matter when it's saon Barkley because he looked astounding but I the bigger question for me coming into the season was Kell Moore what's this offense gonna look like can he help Jaylen Herz and Dominique I I thought the early returns were really really impressive uh Jaylen Herz more up and down but I thought uh the offensive as a whole looked really good and really different yeah I think Kell Moore is perfect for this situation um the so first the sequan thing yeah this is gonna be fun I hope he stays healthy because it's gonna be fun all year to watch him do just about whatever he wants in the running game and even attack in the pass game saquin is going to be a special character and Kell Moore has figured out and at least through one game that this team is really good and they can attack every area of the field with multiple people the hardest thing to do for him is probably going to be able to keep all of these things in his mind at once is like all right we gotta make sure we get the ball here make sure we get the ball there while we're also sticking to our game plan in thinking of what uh what Avenues are opening up for opportunities and keeping everybody happy like those are good problems to have and offensive line seems as good as it was last year which is huge so yeah this this offense feels great I think Kell Moore is gonna scheme the hell out of this thing and yeah the the jayen Herz question it's still open unfortunately yeah it is um I like the way you described kind of the challenge for more because he this is an All-Star team and that was that I think that's what I was reminded I was like oh AJ Brown Devonte Smith got her like there's so many options and you just got to feed them and I think that's kind of the challenge for the play caller especially one who's kind of like whiz kid type right it's like the point here is not for you to show what cool stuff you can do it's to get the ball to your Playmakers in space I thought in this particular game he really married those two things right like you think about the Barkley wheel route touchdown and everything he did to set that up I mean the all the motion in this gamees felt so purposeful upon rewatch you know whether it was like the orbit motion to set up the screen and and then he had AJ Brown clearing it out like everything uh felt very purposeful that was reflected in the stats Herz was had a qbr of 82 with motion Nine without uh but they used a ton of motion the other thing I would highlight is um something I've just harped on to no end this off season which is Blitz Blitz Blitz Blitz what does it look like versus The Blitz uh so looked much much much better against the blitz it felt like jayen Herz had answers he trusted his answers the ball was coming out quickly um they didn't zero him which I thought was kind of odd because I wanted I was like let me see Zero and they like it was mostly just five man pressures but there was that one drive where he just kept hitting outbreaker versus The Blitz and one stat I think to highlight there um so you know NGS does that expected completion percentage last year the Eagles were uh 24th in expected completion percentage versus the blitz so far this week uh they Jaylen hars had an expected completion percentage of 65% which would have been eighth best last year so what that tells me is answers um week one I know I I I don't mean it because it's just one week of data I mean it because the challenges yeah and it's not even that it's the challenges that we have laid out for Kell Moore are complex challenges that are easy to prepare for when you have time from week to week changing the game plan and also incorporating everyone in the offense is a lot more difficult okay the wolfs lot Week 1 Woof: Malik Nabers to choose from here I'll let you go first again um neighbors Malik Neighbors which is a little misleading as as you know towards the end of the season I I cheat a little bit of my winners and wolfes but this particular wolf is because it feels like he's already a grizzled veteran after a game with Daniel Jones at quarterback Malik neighbors was good and it showed quite clearly that he deserves to be highly drafted he's going to be an impact player in this league for a long time but the Giants that seems like a place where a lot of talent well not even a lot of talent where some specific very talented players have gone to have their careers not quite fulfilled and it seemed like this jumped out to me when I saw Malik neighbors postgame quotes where it was like he sounds like he's been in Hell forever you just got there they were asking him about Daniel Jones and my man was like like I'm just doing my job how do you how do you have this um I don't know was uh what's that movie where the the guy was saying I'm too old for this yeah that one H you're too you're too young to know that damn it some of there lots of there lots of listeners who get me when he's if he's what 21 or something and he's talking that way that's not good um I'd say the Spin Zone uh silver lining for Malik neighbors is Daniel Jones appears to be so bad that there will be no doubt about the quarterback situation and I think he's actually based on how he looked week one um we're going to start talking not too long into the season about whether or not they actually switch to lock to avoid triggering the injury guarant I mean d was like I don't know it's week to week about him it's week one man like that's that's they're are they're all in they're not in week one mentally like there is some stress there's some weak 10 stress in that building Dall you he's got look at what Kevin stefany did in Cleveland last year that's if you want to save your job that's he's got to make make a switch and then make it look better I feel like um Daniel Jones passed for 186 yards at 4.4 yards per attempt he was sacked five times had two interceptions at a completion percentage overe expected of negative 177% I think what struck me Dominique is you know I mentioned this with Jones last year it did feel like the offensive line situation was so untenable that I kind and I don't think you know they weren't great in this one but it was a lot on I mean the sacks some of them were on him bad decisions bad throws it felt like you could isolate a lot of it to to the quarterback in this one um I did like the uh the Malik neighbors jump allall though that was catch that was fun they need to have that in the offense that is always the play and when you're throwing pick sixes on screen you can't complete a screen pass van GLE out there look like a superhero is real tough business and I'm sure you've seen everyone's probably already heard and seen the stat about um since Daniel Jones signed the contract he's thrown more touchdowns to the other team than to his own team would you rather be a a Panthers fan or a Giants fan right now before we move on to my loser or wolf I'd rather be a Giants fan I guess yeah I mean at least you have some recent super wins you likely live in Manhattan it's more fun there you go that's cool now a great start for I'll I'll you answer the question I mean you would rather be a Panthers fan no I would rather be a Giants fan because just when you go down the roster I mean there's more I think more to work with for the rebuild Dash Lawrence was Onre in this one oh yeah he's pretty good oh you saw and the Panthers just like Derrick Brown who's like their best player I mean it's just it's so it's so brutal I'll talk about them in a second I the Panthers I didn't want to do actually this week because I want to give it one more week before we really bury the but obviously it was a pretty inici start um my wolf and we'll wrap here is one that I find really fascinating which is Kurt Week 1 Woof: Kirk Cousins Cousins he L are you gonna make the penic pick look smart Mar eat my words yes however you if you can make the penic pick look smart but then you make everything you did before that pick look wildly stupid so no no no no no no well let's just let's talk about cousins before we get to that that aspect of it um so obviously the Falcons lose to the Steelers who it's a very Steelers Z win great defense uh just enough from the offense Fields pretty efficient good running the ball holds on to the job by the way they I just saw Mike Tomlin said he's gonna he's gonna play week to so uh we'll discuss that next week ahead of or in my preview ahead of that game but um my biggest takeaway from this game was that Kurt Cousins was not ready to play football and it was pretty astounding um this is circulated a lot but um our assassin info group noticed it at some point during the game that uh whenever he was in the gun they went 22 for 22 passing and then when they were in the pistol they had an 80% run rate uh you know who else noticed it the Steelers defense about halfway through the game just started uh the linebackers and TJ wat just started immediately playing the run of the past because there was absolutely no uncertainty and the reason there was no uncertainty is because kir cousins was not comfortable moving I mean the entire premise of him going to Atlanta was he's this great under Center play action quarterback back he can't run under Center play action right now so the whole thing falls apart it's super siloed the Run game suffers for it Dominique like watching him like I my question was why did they think this would work not not signing him but week one why did they think and also how come none of us heard anything about this this entire offseason that's the thing that blew my mind he didn't tear his Achilles after he signed the deal you know like that how do you not you just assume like that's the concerning part um and then you're right this whole offseason no one was talking about this they kept it under ws and that is shocking to me and putting him out there when it's clear that he's like limited that's like I I don't know what the plan is I I guess it's just to protect Michael pennick but one of the encouraging things and maybe that's how we got to the Michael penck draft pick is maybe after they signed him they were like uh oh this ain't right and we got a decision to make and so like I understand keeping this all under wraps but how and it's clear that they knew it they don't they don't game plan they don't have our under Center play action quarterback not under cter during play action unless he can't do it so it's really concerning all the way throughout and it doesn't look like that's something that's going to get better from week to week maybe in a year you know like it sometimes it takes a while for some of those major injuries like it takes a probably a year extra for you to feel great after ACL I think he will get a little more comfortable driving the ball um but I also think there are things they can I mean you know ju run the ball from the gun I mean it's fine if you I know I thinkon can do I mean oh see that's my faces don't mean it's not possible my faces mean it's not preferable like of course ban can do it of course you can run from the gun but we also know that running from the gun is more difficult than running from a deep Dot and running backs don't love it and when you run from the gun the reason why you get an advantage sometime is because you have the threat of the read option like that is the one advantage from running from the gun they don't have none of that so it just they're they've paid a bunch of money for a quarterback that that has significant limitations I think the best case scenario for Atlanta is that this slowly looks better as the season goes along so they need to hold serve so basically what you got to figure out if if you're not going to play penic I kind of don't think they are I don't know um you have to figure out a way to make your tells less obvious so that you know you should be a good running team so like you you this offense needs to be a little bit more balanced doesn't even have to be like a lot more yeah by the way the they they were very it was very obvious not just in terms of formation but when they were an 11 they almost exclusively threw the ball when they were in 12 they almost they mostly ran the ball like the did the whole offense just looked bad man like I don't know they got their offensive coordinator was with the Rams Zack Robinson firsttime play caller that's the other thing like I don't know you know I I think there's this assumption that anyone who comes from that team it's going to be great and and and I'm not saying he won't be great obviously the quarterback's Health puts limitations on that I just am befuddled by their own inability to project how those limitations would uh play out in real time yeah and have some sort of alternative to it that's the concerning part but I I will defend them a little bit because I don't know oftentimes I can think of at least the framework of an alternative maybe I don't have all the details down it's really hard for me if the alternative is shotgun only exclusively shotgun that doesn't feel great considering the Personnel that you have in a style of play that you that you want to have so like the the best thing about play action a quarterback who's comfortable with turning his back is the play action is so much more pronounced and it's so it gets the motion of the defense moving so much f it gets the flow so much faster away which makes all the other things work out so if that is the key point of your offense then you got to throw that out you got to run an entirely different offense and that's a hard thing to do because yeah you have to find another focal point because not every quarterback is is athletic so that's fine but you need to find something else this it's an appropriate bookend to the top of the show talking about another quarterback in the gun but that quarterback can access uh every arm angle he can make more difficult throws he's better at reading defenses which isn't to say his lack of Mobility is is not a challenge that the Jets also have to deal with I just think you know Rogers because of who he is can overcome that I don't think Kurt Cousins can he is this is lit we joke when we like the Kirk Cousins type of quarterback is one who does play action boot like it's just that's who he is and uh yeah that sucked um okay well there were a lot of Week 1 Winner and Woofs contenders for losers I we even talk about the rookie quarterbacks and but that was by Design actually because give it a second you know and I like you know look bad well Daniel's a little bit less so although the offense I have questions about but I but I want to I want to give it a second before we get to those quarterbacks Dominique because I feel like yeah you know maybe week one everybody should just chill out a little bit yeah absolutely I think you're right we'll give us some time we're hating next week though right Charlie's already hating on my show he's a hater spirit is he already hating classic H that when Anthony Richardson hit that 65 yard ball I knew Charlie would be unbearable um speaking of Dominique show I will be join in him uh as always during the NFL season for his Friday episode so definitely check that out check them out See you next time! all week otherwise on this program I will be back uh on Thursday to once again preview the entire slate of week uh the NFL games week two
