IT IS A HEART-BREAKING DAY FOR MEMBERS OF THE PHILADELPHIA POLICE DEPARTMENT. >> Natasha: CHIEF INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER JOE HOLDEN JOINING US FROM POLICE HEADQUARTERS WITH THIS VERY, VERY SAD STORY. JOE? >> Reporter: NATASHA, SIAFA, GOOD AFTERNOON TO YOU. FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF OFFICER JAIME ROMAN WERE PRAYING, HOLDING OUT HOPE THAT THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT. EVEN THE POLICE COMMISSIONER GIVING THEM SUCH KUDOS FOR THEIR VIGIL AT HIS BEDSIDE FOR TWO AND A HALF MONTHS AT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. THIS OFFICER ON THE FORCE FOR NEARLY SEVEN YEARS WORKING OUT OF THE 25th DISTRICT AND THE 12th DISTRICT. HIS FATHER TELLING THE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE HIS SON ALWAYS WANTED TO BE AN OFFICER. HOURS AFTER PHILADELPHIA POLICE OFFICER JAIME ROMAN DIED, HIS BODY WAS TAKEN FROM TEMPLE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL TO THE MEDICAL EXAMINER'S OFFICE. FELLOW OFFICERS IN A LINE DOWN 15th STREET SALUTED THIS FALLEN OFFICER WHO WAS SHOT IN THE LINE OF DUTY ON JUNE 22nd. OFFICIALS SAY OFFICER ROMAN HELD ON SINCE THEN. FAMILY HAD HOPED HE WOULD GET BETTER. THE SEVEN-YEAR MEMBER OF THE FORCE DIED AROUND 8:30 LAST NIGHT. HIS DEATH IN THE LINE OF DUTY MARKING A FIRST FOR MAYOR CHERELLE PARKER WHO WAS DEEPLY EMOTIONAL. >> I DON'T KNOW HOW TO ACT. THERE'S NO PLAYBOOK ON WHAT THE MAYOR IS SUPPOSED TO DO AT A TIME LIKE THIS. >> Reporter: INVESTIGATORS SAY IT WAS JUST BEFORE 8:00 O'CLOCK THE NIGHT OF JUNE 22nd WHEN ROMAN AND HIS PARTNER PULLED OVER A CAR AT F AND TIOGA FOR A BAD REGISTRATION. AFTER A BRIEF SEARCH, THIS MAN, IDENTIFIED AS ROMAN RODRIGUEZ VASQUEZ DREW A GUN. >> THE INDIVIDUAL WALKED AWAY AND DID NO HARM TO ANYONE. UNFORTUNATELY THIS INDIVIDUAL ELECTED AFTER THEY FOUND AN EMPTY HOLSTER TO ENGAGE THE OFFICER, FIRING AT LEAST THREE TIMES AT OFFICER ROMAN. >> Reporter: ROMAN WAS STRUCK IN THE NECK, HIS PARTNER WAS NOT HIT. ROMAN ASSIGNED TO THE 25th DISTRICT LEAVES BEHIND A WIFE AND TWO YOUNG CHILDREN. HIS ALLEGED KILLER WHO WAS CAUGHT SHORTLY AFTER THE SHOOTING WILL NOW FACE UPGRADED CHARGES OF MURDER. >> TO SEE HIS WIFE AND HIS TWO CHILDREN, SEVEN-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER AND FOUR-YEAR-OLD SON, TO SEE THE STRENGTH OF HIS FATHER AND EVERYONE THAT WAS INVOLVED, HOW MUCH THEY WERE SITTING VIGILLY NEXT TO HIM HAVING HOPE THAT HE MAY SURVIVE. >> Reporter: YOU NOTICED MAYOR CHERELLE PARKER SEARCHING FOR WORDS.
