Texas vs. Washington: 2021 NCAA volleyball regional semifinal | FULL REPLAY

welcome to the ncaa women's volleyball championship presented by buick and inside a sold out gregory jim side of the regional semifinals here in austin saving possibly the best for last who will be the final two teams tonight to get one step closer to the national championship in columbus ohio next week four outstanding teams the number two seed and the host texas longhorns three times a national champion they will take on speaking of champions also a winner in 2005 but also the reigning pac-12 champions and none other than the nebraska cornhuskers a five-time national champion and the fighting illini pulled off a big upset taking out the defending national champs last week in lexington here's the bracket number three seed the pit panthers have advanced as have the purdue boilermakers the number six seed bought on the bracket illinois and nebraska coming up at approximately 9 30 eastern time tonight hi everybody i'm paul sunderland so glad to have you along with us and always had glad to have my partner three-time all-american selima rockwell we've already had an amazing day of volleyball you got to go back and look at it on the app so many interesting things happen but interesting tonight texas the number two seed washington the number 15 seed but it's much closer than that tell us why it's much much closer well let's not forget that these are two of the last teams standing last year two of the four teams in that championship in omaha last year so the pac-12 champion in washington very very good they're balanced with their attack they're good in service eve so this is going to be a big big match tonight texas knows they have their hands full we'll set some of the stars as we get going texas in their home white uniforms 26-1 over all 15-1 champions once again of the big 12 conference washington 26-4 17-3 lost their first two conference matches and then have won 19 out of their last 20. surprisingly these two teams selima meeting for the very first time in the ncaa tournament and right over the top of the block number nine samantha drexel six foot four fifth year senior out of woodenville washington first team all-american last year and her book in these two women do a lot of work claire hoffman 6-2 junior out of pleasant hills oregon 21 in purple back to the line tight pass nicely saved by jenna gabriel the setter out of hawaii wearing number two in white they're gonna need to run the middle a good bit tonight see if they can start that offense and really stress the block of washington there is the libero for the university of texas nalani yosiya out of torrance california had an outstanding week in the first and second round receiving and defensively first look at the two-time big 12 player of the year wearing number 33 logan eggleston well the transition play that's what they need to do get that ball high and tight to the outside working around the edges of the block that's three out of five sets the crowd still filtering in while the washington fans made the trip they've got a wonderful fan base up in seattle and off the top of the block and monty bush six foot three freshman out of canada inserted into the lineup kind of at the beginning of the pac-12 season and really sort of changed the makeup of this washington squad it did they had to make some changes and adjustments and we'll talk about that as the match goes on but bush has done a fantastic job and the physical attacker hits high above the net working on eggleston nice reception block out of the middle but marin groat that was a tough chance for grote number 12 in purple out of the middle for washington speaking of the changes lauren bayes who just went back as the liberal for washington freshman out of southern california inserted into the lineup and she has really done a magnificent job solidifying first and foremost speaking of that first ball contact keegan cook said he knew that she could do it he was just kind of waiting for that to develop and it's really opened up a lot of other things on the court [Applause] right side couple of swings heavy arm once again for drexel well drexel c she has one blocker so she could go hard into that cross court eggleston's lined up right in front of her she chooses to hit that ball just outside the edge down the line washington was very impressive at home in the first and second round as that ball drifts just out easily took out the ivy league champions brown and then took out traditionally a very solid team from hawaii washington hit 365 and beat the rainbow wahines three sets to none whereas texas solid against rice hit 490 rice hit 350 and lost three sets to none so both teams coming in probably playing their best volleyball at the most important time of the year so here's eggleston much improved servers are careers gone on bush looking high hands looking for a touch did not get it ball hit just out of bounds by number four well it started with that tough serve you were talking about with eggleston has really really improved driving this ball forcing washington off the net and having to hit that out of system swing forcing that error very good ratio for eggleston 43 aces coming in 44 errors but also a lot of very consistent pressure nice play by lma powell six foot junior out of fayetteville arkansas twice the pac-12 center of the year there is jared elliot big 12 coach of the year for the eighth time the winningest coach in texas volleyball history which is saying a lot 532 wins here in austin in his 21st season fields going off speed kept off the floor by the huskies fields again skylar fields number five in white on the other side keegan cook now in his seventh year three times a pac-12 champion four regional finals the national semi-finals last year win over dayton three sets to two louisville three sets to two pittsburgh resets the two before falling to the eventual champions in kentucky texas with a 6-4 lead and asia o'neil for the service air you talk about all those five setters i mean this is a team the washington team that knows how to battle they're resilient they're patient they're patient with what they do so no matter how this starts off you can believe that they're gonna still be in the match until the bitter end sienna houghton in to serve 5-10 sophomore out of northern california on the slide breon butler is roofed by number 21 hoffman claire hoffman physical blocker i mean these are some physical players at the net take a look at this block a big block but really it's the spot that she picks dropped short just a little bit knows that butler is going hard on that cross and she takes it well make no mistake when you look at the washington roster and the quality of players that they have we've already talked about drexel and hoffman but growed at six foot four sanders middle blocker at six foot four they can match up and back to back hitting airs one on a stuff and that into the net by fields that look like a little bit of a mis connection between gabriel and fields on that play and it's a nice matchup right now with fields over the top of powell wanting to hit that ball down the line working on eggleston so far up to the task out of the pipe number 33 with another kill nice back row combination that's where what makes logan eggleston so dangerous she can do it from anywhere on the court and after handling the ball she likes to pass an attack she likes to hit dig and attack so just keep an eye out for that tied at seven here's the setter gabriel [Applause] dig right on target phillip slow the tomahawk set is out of bounds that was an overhead tomahawk as opposed to the side i'm trying to make a play on that well then the block in place for washington getting in the face of texas right now either touching it slowing it down just a little bit surf to fields pretty well handled in the block right now of washington starting to assert itself lauren sanders six foot four middle out of snohomish washington 1.3 blocks per set third best in the conference and you watch that move that's an early move as soon as they know that ball's passed forward that's all she can do the block gets set she's going to take care of it shank pass this is a nice response by the visitors from seattle washington again 26 and 4 overall 119 out of their last 20 and after losing their first couple of conference matches have really been on a run and as expected got a good one here in austin lma powell settled for the huskies leading a 6-1 run right now to take the 10-7 advantage over the number two seed texas longhorns quieting the crowd excuse me just a little bit absolutely driving this ball straight down the line at fields [Applause] chase by bays important free ball here for texas smart swing cross body by number 21 hoffman so many good blocks there by washington in place they know that ball's going to butler getting double block in bringing the left side blocker in and helping see some of the resume what a program up in seattle nine out of the last 10 years washington has advanced to the regional round good set in transition and that ball over the top of the block but just a little bit long claire hoffman who played libero last year excuse me shannon crenshaw six foot two junior out of florida doing a nice job patrolling the back row she's one of their best passers one of their best defenders high volleyball iq [Applause] what a turn through the serving rotation that's an overpass and another point they're just rolling right now we'll see if coachella has to make some adjustments here passing because this is tough and trouble for them right now getting that ball directly on field causing that overpass melanie parr a 511 sophomore out of mexico wearing number four coming in at the outside hitting position but mostly to stabilize first contact and they go right after really good serving by powell beautiful transition ella mae powell number seven in purple delivers the ball in a beautiful spot and drexel and the huskies are rolling right now they are hitting 417 and the run continues on top of texas 14-7 and jared elliot has had he couldn't wait had to burn his second timeout i want to remind you coverage of the ncaa women's volleyball championship continues with regional final action saturday on espnu for more information on the ncaa women's volleyball championship log on to ncaa.com the official online home for all 90 ncaa championships salima mentioned that there are some very interesting matches earlier today louisville and georgia tech both advanced into the regional final louisville look very solid as did georgia tech a shame for ohio state they had an injury but georgia tech was absolutely superb they'll face off on saturday pit and purdue and what about purdue oh my goodness against the cougars my goodness that match was insane to watch the swings back and forth up and down the streaks of points but man and at the end 14-10 in the fifth byu had five match points that was crazy but that's you know that's been purdue they've been battling a lot of five setters they've beat a lot of top teams this year and and man they came through at the end when it mattered purdue down and up against it but kept playing let's take a look at the washington huskies season recap another very very solid year as they won the pac-12 championship for the second year in a row 17-3 in one of the nation's strongest conferences but really the changes they made at the beginning of the pac-12 season and to go on this role winning 19 out of their last 20 they started the season right with a five-set loss at home to utah and then at washington state record-setting set 46-44 the longest ever well the changes have been huge maddie ensley was struggling early on so they needed to steady things out and control their errors fabulous serving by powell 10-1 now an 11-1 run and number 21 hoffman with the kill drax drexel almost perfect four of five hoffman now two of four washington is hitting 462 texas 0-59 they are just driving this ball straight down the line powell really taking care of things from the service line another chance in transition that ball set a little bit tight but great job by drexel changing direction on the ball managed that well and you saw molly phillips come underneath the block running to pick up that tip and she actually overran that play that's why that ball was able to fall 16-7 was waiting for them to switch and split their server seat now para passing on the right they had to change some things phillips will have to take a big swing on the outside if it comes to that texas is one of the best offensive teams in the country no doubt about it they can't find the ball they can't get a kill but they do making major changes explain phillips out on the left side well i mean that's what happens they were stacked they normally stack on the left and she runs that slide but they had to do something they had to change the passing pattern because that was not working para is a very dangerous server number one in the big 12 conference in aces with 56. what a run by powell the center for washington and an ace right on cue [Applause] [Applause] good play by bay stepping in front piece of the block no a rare hitting error for the huskies that time by hoffman [Applause] para staying at this service line and talked about how difficult it is to receive her serve she is one of the hardest flattest deepest serves that you're going to see and can really get washington some trouble and go on some runs and that ball just out of bounds and speaking of runs and back to the run by lma powell wearing number seven in purple the setter for washington she served ten times nine scoring and then finally finally uh molly phillips was able to side out 17-10 is the lead eggleston going high flat a very smart high swing by logan eggleston the defense for washington sucked in the court with a good double block in front of you you're gonna have to back up a little bit and play that ball off the hands and the service air asia o'neal missed one earlier and this one missed by melania yoseah lucia has a tough serve and this texas team has a very very good serving team they can go on some runs each server with a tough one here's the washington library lauren bayes tough serve that drifts just out of bounds and it was her insertion into the starting lineup that really solidified washington's first contact and also bolstered they're not the best digging team when you just look at the stats out of the pac-12 teams they're 12th yeah so the numbers don't lie but she has bolstered this washington team defensively and boy they are good in transition with drexel and hoffman here is sydney peterson 1812 washington leading so there's the first contact perfect pass and off the edge of the block well that has to be a little bit of a miss you don't want to serve bae certainly right right in her lap you want to move this ball around a little bit try to work that ball into the seam but there's that perfect pass block can't get set in time impossible she's going to be able to score [Applause] that ball set too tight thrown to the floor logan eggleston got away with that one that's one of those moves they've been working on we saw him even working on it over and over again in practice really just a high contact throat to the middle of the court you know i i thought that one was okay it came off her hand quickly yeah but but it's there's going to be some pressure on the officiating crew today to make sure that that is uh called appropriately washington led it 10-7 then went on continued on a 6-1 run the lead of the run eventually got to 11-1 very impressive for the huskies killed into the cross court amani bush hitting only 149 so far on the year but a very very talented freshman who came in mid-season last year family's from canada she could not play in the championship even though it was in the spring precluded become right from when she was on campus and that ball drifts just out of bounds by crenshaw last year's libro now playing in a defensive specialist role and also can take some swings on the outside she can take some serious cuts we'll see if she has to stay in sometimes they leave her in for bush if she's struggling a little bit at the net did by peterson but over the top of the net good coverage that time by fields and a rare miss at the defensive end by bayes schuyler fields number five in white with a kill on a very good recovery fields was on almost on the ground on that play she picked up that tip that was thrown over the net and then got up with a step close to finish it watching keegan cook the outstanding coach for washington scratching it well he doesn't have too many whiskers but scratching his chin a little thinking about if texas scores here i got to take a timeout that's a serving mistake that is a perfect pass right in the lap of lauren bayes the liberal for washington working that side of the court trying to yeah but that's right in the middle of the court like you said in that speed of the set too fast for the block too much stress on the block to close hoffman on the outside net violation that ball was set too tight so that'll be a violation easy play to call an opportunity missed for washington but they're still comfortably in the lead at 21-16 they're still trying to run that with some speed that ball was way off the net trying to keep the ball fast so the big block of texas can't get set [Applause] here's gabriel again perfect pass off the top of the tape chance here for texas another set too tight to the net up into the block recycle off the top of the block nicely done by drexel recording another kill this one out of the back court and washington continues to lead 22-16. had to throw a towel off the floor come back on the court [Applause] thank you courtney and congratulations to the wisconsin badgers their victory over the ucla bruins here in austin with lima rockwell i'm paul sunderland in washington off to a magnificent start over the second seeded texas longhorns doing that passing balls digging balls perfect setting by lma powell and that ball killed off the left side and now washington two points away from the opening set and that was everything a perfect dig right on the money a beautiful dish by powell we knew that washington was really solid and before the match started we said forget about the 2 and 15 but are you surprised that texas is clearly struggling in a couple of phases here early at home i'm surprised a little bit there's a couple of weaknesses that they do have and they've been exposed and that's the scouting that's been done on the side of washington to really expose some of the passing that's the biggest breakdown so far for texas para back at the line again she had an ace earlier servant base that's got to be a big mistake it works this time but you can't make a living serving the library for washington she's too solid and received she's been passing perfectly almost every single time but texas gets that block out of tokyo out of the timeout and keegan cook taking no chances they've had a very comfortable lead after texas got out to a quick start once again a 6-1 then it expanded to a 10-1 run for the visiting huskies once again the first time these two teams these illustrious programs have ever met in the ncaa tournament texas in the tournament for the 38th time washington in for the 26th and they have gone deep into the tournament many and they're playing for the first time it just i found that very very strange and getting things started we knew that all american number nine in purple samantha drexel along with claire hoffman would play a very important role and she's off to a really good start i mean she's hitting 778 right now what did you say for 778. it's ridiculous but that's what she can do i mean she's physical but she moves the ball around and saw her hit a couple of balls across court there we go we had a little bit of a blip in terms of our audio up here in the booth everything went dead for a moment for a moment just for a moment they can't cut us off come on paul they can try [Music] coming out of the timeout texas trailing washington 23 to 18. lma powell has been very very impressive first team all-american last year and drexel hitting seven of nine no errors against one of the most imposing blocks in all of college volleyball [Applause] down the line claire hoffman apologize if we're having some audio issues we will solimus stop stepping on the corner i swear here is hoffman back to serve up set point number one nobody should be surprised that washington is playing at this level phillips off the edge of the block and away from powell he asked me if i was surprised earlier about what's going on but really offensively texas is normally fine offensively even if they're having some trouble defensively they're only hitting 222 right now on the match well coach elliott has said many times i never worry about my offense number one in the nation now with a couple of rounds of the tournament set point again bush rejected their nice set out of the middle by sanders and then a high flat really nice play by lauren sanders number one the middle blocker dishing it up nicely to the outside to amani bush that's right middle blockers can set too very impressive by the huskies how will the number two seed texas longhorns respond the washington huskies take the opening set over the texas longhorns 25 to 19 as we welcome you back to the ncaa women's volleyball championship presented by buick what do you expect from texas there will be no panic particularly with the luxury of being at home you think that they will respond but it's really going to have to be from the pot passing in if they can handle the ball passing wise they can get themselves back in this eggleston starting things off working in the inside hand of number one sanders give me the numbers for eggleston so far five kills on five swings no errors not much better can do much better than that and sydney peterson defensive specialist will come on to serve texas once again the number two seed the washington huskies champions of the pac-12 the number 15 seed we're checking back through history we think that's the lowest seed ever for a pac-12 champion since they've been seeding the hot the whole tournament since 2000. oh sure good read by powell all over that shot peterson hustling pancake by bayes not down yet the ball was called down and no complaint from washington i was a little bit screened it looked like she got it off the floor and you saw keegan kind of looked was asking his players and they're like yeah no that was on the floor here's the play by peterson on her knees saves this ball and what a smart shot by gabriel over the net chance in transition eggleston again good block touch slide connection not there but nice work by asia o'neil number seven in white staying in the play she chased that one done that was going fast here's the dig to transition this ball i thought she wasn't even going to be able to catch up to but tips it nice and easy over top of the block for a point sydney peterson back to serve has been doing work at the defensive end a couple of very nicely controlled digs and tough serve down the line bush going high flat and out of the reach a much needed scoring swing by amani bush six foot three as mentioned that's been the key for washington they're very good at hitting high and flat deep into the court trained very well in that sense give you the numbers from the opening set washington as you might imagine was just about flawless perfect pass and that time nicely done by eggleston she is speaking of perfect now six for six washington hit 387 and had 16 kills texas had only 10 kills and hit 2-22 texas with a 4-1 lead washington up one set to none nebraska and illinois to come in the nightcap [Applause] good set in transition excellent dig ball by fields off the block and down logan eggleston the total package does everything she digs the ball beautifully in center back well in that sense she's deep enough she's in the right exact right spot but then controls this ball high to the middle of the court and that's why they're able to transition and score last week against a very good team out of conference usa the rice owls logan eggleston actually led texas and digs tough serve well handled drexel again down the line and leave her that much line she's going to be able to hit it either clean down the line or just a little bit off of the line as well so watch this set go and fields was all the way bunched into the court and just couldn't catch up with it is fields too far inside shouldn't she be out with number nine you know i'm surprised they don't set the middles quite that much so i i would expect them to not be in such a severe bunch service ace for number nine samantha drescal in her fifth year fifth year graduate senior first team all-american last year two times all pac-12 good block beautiful block out of the middle by number 12 marin grot we talked about the size and length of washington 6-3 6-4 and very well trained they are long they know what they're doing also the serve is dictating what they're doing blocking-wise they know what's going to come after the pass where they're going to set the ball so the blocks getting in place eggleston again perfect dig in transition over the top ball was still alive but pretty good off speed by asia o'neil number seven in white and i am so impressed and have been with logan eggleston and how she's been handling the ball defensively but reading well too not just staying in one spot 29 aces for o'neal on the year but a very consistent server hitting 384 on the year just another fabulous first team all big 12 season tight pass and covered ella powell excuse me was that maron groat i thought it was powell that got on the floor to go paul wait a minute middle blockers can scramble that's right though that was growth she was going back to hit a slide and just happened to be in the right spot and hit this ball with one arm got it over the net man stay in the play really good set that time on the run by jenna gabriel here's the thing the left sides of texas could hit them out of trouble if the balls passed way off the net gabriel yes put up a nice set but they're out of system they have to be able to score and that's what makes them pretty dangerous gabriel we've talked to you about lma powell twice the pac-12 setter of the year same honor in the big 12 conference for jenna gabriel that ball tapped awkwardly by the block of breon butler and molly phillips and to the floor now you're driving texas driving that ball straight down the line as well trying to pull that ball to the left side of the court got their block and set set and in place but couldn't handle that sienna houghton on to serve once again and play some defense working on eggleston well passed [Music] fields thrown into the middle drexel gets a hand on it oh perfect set to hoffman trying to go high flat breon butler pulled her hands down magnificent transition scoring here for washington well those are the some of the plays that you don't want to get used on you know how good washington is at hitting high and flat and i know that's why butler pulled her hands down expecting her to go deep phillips reaching over the top and missed that out of bounds salima texas seems to be receiving serve pretty well and they're going to the middles some but it seems like washington is block touching almost every chance for asia o'neil and brian butler how are they getting that done well i think they're see they know the scout in certain rotations when they're passing well what they're going to run and that's that's the best part of this whole game is scouting teams knowing what's coming next and i think that's that's the name of the game right now another really good block touch out of the middle this by sanders and then looking for a touch and hoffman has got it didn't get the call we might have our first challenge yeah keegan cook didn't take him long to go get that that fancy green card once again two challenges sort of during conference play but forget all of that it's back to the legislated system if you will so three challenges even if you're correct you've used it it's done it's gone you can challenge ball in or out ball off the block a net violation or not three meter line foot fault service line foot fault four contacts or ball up or down this was a quick one as soon as that ball was was hit they were calling for a touch he jumped off the bench so we'll take a look at this here and see if we see something off the right hand of molly phillips the ball was called out of bounds we're looking at the right hand of number 15. the question is going to be does that pinky move do we see those go back a little bit tough i think i see a micro touch i see i see the slightest movement i do too and especially the ring finger of the right hand of the texas blocker molly phillips in this case so the question is is that enough and can they see it down there with the db sport as they're rewinding and taking a good look at this and it has to be 100 right it can't be 99.5 the call again was out of bounds decision has been made and there is indeed a touch so keegan cook and the washington huskies win that challenge but have two left hoffman and drexel as we thought getting a lot of work taken 27 out of the 45 swings for washington with a lot of success drexel eight of 12 no errors tight pass nicely handled by jenna gabriel well done really well handled that ball was coming fast right at her couldn't get both hands on it just flings that ball back with one hand to a beautiful set by jenna gabriel para taking her time already with an ace and some service pressure tight pass good read by butler butler anticipating powell attacking this ball but she's in the right spot here's that tough serve comes right at the net butler drops that left hand in to get the get the block second scoring block now for texas three for washington tied at nine and that ball just out of bounds opening set if you're just joining us washington the number 15 seed champions of the pac-12 texas the number two overall seed champions of the big 12. we knew it was going to be a very very tight contest it was all washington in the opening set 25-19 rotation again with lma powell back at the line and good news for texas and texas fans they they got powell off the service line she served 10 times in the opening set which is crazy she has an excellent serve and she was able to really get texas in a lot of trouble so yeah phillips hitting them out of this rotation is big dug by texas but can not continue the play and once again drexel even on sort of a midland pass if you will washington really plays with good tempo to the pins they do they want to keep it going even if it's a short string ball or they're way off the net they're keeping that pace like we talked about just to stress the block of texas eagles nicely done in servers leads to a quick kill out of the middle on the gap for o'neal well that's where she's gotten so much better we're so used to seeing her hit that slide we talked about this all the time she's gotten so much better finding space between the blockers and gabriel finding her at 11. best three out of five sets for a spot again in the regional finals for these two elite programs tight set ripped through the block and down by drexel hoffman hanging in there passing wise these are tough serves down the line there's only two people in that rotation passing she and mays and that's a lot of room to really take up o'neal again on the slide [Applause] that is one of the smoothest slide attacks in the country this ball is off the net a little bit gabriel gets on it gets underneath it and for neal and she is fired up right now trying to rally her team father jermaine and mother misha a permanent spot in the end zone here very very supportive wonderful family oh a surf just when you were talking about hoffman yeah texas is gonna and she has held up that was a really tough serve that was the bb and that thing looked like it may have been going out of bounds but sometimes you just can't get out of the way and then you have to make a decision tough serve again but drifts just over the end line that was a very good try that time by eggleston going back now will be drexel drexel now 10 of 14. she has a service a she has a block and she has yet to have a hitting here having a big night good block marin groat out of the middle talk about the serving strategy right now going after eggleston by washington well they want to serve over to that zone so they can force the ball off the net give texas only one attacking option and get their block set that's exactly what they did grope got all the way over there and was able to block the ball service ace so service pressure we've got the media timeout washington up one set to none and leading 15-13 in the second 15-13 doing really good work in terms of strategy at the service line blocking well out blocking texas right now four to two out hitting them 396 to 292. texas upping its offense here in the second set 381 shank pass tight watch for powell and she throws it down in area two moving that ball around now she had one behind her head one to the middle of the court that got blocked by butler and now hitting that one sharp inside the block largest lead of the second set for washington swing rattles through the block and down everything going washington's way right now after his second set was tied at 10. well drexer going back there tough from the service line defensive efforts as well and a nice blast off the block by bush washington went on that remarkable 10-1 run in the opening set and they come right back selena now on a 5-1 run and forcing a timeout to be called by head coach jared elliott of the university of washington another service winner texas as far as their side out numbers they've been siding out over the last five or six weeks at 70 percent which is going to win an awful lot right now siding out at about 50 that's that's well below where they want to be 70 is high but 50 is very low that ball just out of bounds last two matches in the regional semifinals coming up nebraska and illinois pretty good pass by hoffman that ball deflected and brianne butler can't find it asia o'neil amazing story open heart surgery not once but twice and as recently as the winter of 2020 survived both of those now at full health and full strength and her parents played a very key role parents were told that she had to quit volleyball and they said wait a minute we're getting a second opinion went to the cleveland clinic and now she is full health it's an amazing story incredible that she's playing and better than ever fields dug in the back court by crenshaw texas got to convert on these free ball opportunities first touch by peterson and the rainbow the loopy over the top somehow goes i was like oh here's a free ball then the ball was set way off the net butler had to tip and man you saw baze crash in on this ball thinking it's going to be a little bit more shallow when she hits it faster 1915 make it 20 to 15. service story doesn't tell everything we don't have the passing numbers for either team but washington now with four aces five errors texas with two aces and six errors here is houghton nice kill by molly gonna need phillips to step up and phillips has been good she's really good from the right moves the ball around can find that seam you know who's struggling at schuyler fields and schuyler fields has been playing phenomenal volleyball her numbers of late i mean she's been one of the best left side hitters in the country hitting 339 right now she's hitting zero yeah they've slowed her down touched a lot of her swings and taken away that cross court eggleston's doing her part six of 12 with one air smart shot off the edge of the block really well done by hoffman number 21. and hard to do with it's that low and you're that far inside the court hoffman seeing the block and just wipes it right off of it really good rotation for washington right now drexel hoffman along with sanders up front look who's at the line powell perfect pass and breon butler nice job by eggleston logan eggleston the big 12 player of the year back back years having a nice match that's what they needed to do get out of that rotation with a perfect pass and she came through texas in danger of going down two sets to none in this regional semifinal very easy serve way too easy and texas pays the price i saw them doing that a little bit of practice yesterday i was wondering how much sanders today excuse me how much sanders was gonna be set just quick out of the middle of the court very good very physical you could tell right away that was trouble because that served by texas was a lollipop a little too easy and again we talked about how tough they are as a serving team so good from the service line but haven't really gotten it going today against against washington time out called by the second seeded texas longhorns trailing by five there's the serving story once again gave you two that moments ago and i'm looking back and i am quite certain texas played a five-cent match at kansas which they won and they were down two sets to none they were so they have been in this position before kansas a very good team lost earlier today unseated beat oregon in the first round and advanced before being eliminated so congratulations to the jayhawks out of the big 12. tough serve what a good serve call that one to five it's not easy to serve down the line that accurate it is not and with that pace i mean you want to thread this needle get it down on right on edelson she can handle this ball but there's a lot of pace on this ball as well eggleston passes nice dig down the line by powell not a good set in transition but eggleston wow what a smart shot that ball was way off the net and you certainly don't think she's going to be able to chop that ball down the line smart play still takes a little hop on this here's that nice dig by gabriel a little bit of a stutter hits it on the right side of the ball just cups it down the line and powell almost took that away from hoffman in the back court washington not happy about missing that opportunity here's peterson been good in the backcourt and in serve stuff block asia o'neil with some help from eggleston that's what they've been waiting on they know they're going to set drexel here in this rotation getting there and that's eggleston just dropping hard into that cross court that's what it's supposed to look like as an outside attacker at first blush i thought that o'neal got that but what a good reach by eggleston timeout called by washington thoughts here inside each huddle salima well right now texas just have to be patient with what they're doing and make one play at a time they know they're in the right spots they know where the ball is going they know what they need to do just have to be more efficient and effective with the ball but right now that's what coach sullivan is talking to them about and where they can attack on the court and of course washington just needs to steady out they're in control they've been playing good volleyball you can see how calm coach cook is when he's talking to his team right now just methodical in what they're doing and keep keep plugging away washington hit 288 on the year which was the top number in the pac-12 conference they're hitting 404 on the road against the number two seed i haven't seen them all year and i've seen them play a lot but man this is the best that i've seen them just very very good in every phase speaking of that the pit panthers were very very good earlier today that is a really solid team in purdue fought off five match points to eliminate byu and an incredible thriller it was a roller coaster it wasn't always pretty no it was not even at the end was it pretty but give the boilermakers a tremendous amount of credit for hanging in and you know they don't care if it was pretty or not no style points 23 to 19. washington playing with tremendous confidence right now because they're executing flawlessly that ball over the top another perfect pass by the libra lauren baze and this pressure cooker only a freshman well you talk about the passing the perfect passing in the side out percentage they're almost they're near 70 side out percentage which is huge and a very very high rate set point number one it's all set a little bit tight eggleston going with that slapper we got to get a new nickname for that perfectly i have no problem with that that the way it's executed i have a problem with you grabbing it and throwing it down and i hope the officials will call that set point number two hoffman has been up to it in terms of reception solid change at the setting position right now for texas but no matter blocked out of the back court number 12 marin grot with a stuff block getting some help on the left side and the we said it forget about the seeds we knew this was going to be very interesting and that washington was capable of playing maybe at a national championship level up two cents to none over texas how will texas respond what adjustments will they make they'll start with para number four at the service line or with a dig this ball a little bit tight good swing by eggleston looking for a touch and a touch is called by the linesman behind texas remember keegan cook it's only one nothing he can't burn another challenge no no and because yeah you're gonna lose it no matter what you know that's a that's a tough one a high swing over top of the block was definitely out it must have been a tiny touch that's a micro a wry smile for the father to be his child his first child is expected when the day of the national championship yeah good work yeah if this were the experimental system you might think about using a challenge because you were very sure that there was no touch and then if it's confirmed you keep it that's going to be the system next year but the the committee and the ncaa you've got to go through all the legislative process it was the right thing to do there's that there's that pass on the ball getting the butler butler waiting for her to get going they've done a nice job slowing her down a little bit getting some block touches but i think they can get butler going on those good passes butler now three of ten out of the middle which is low efficiency for a middle attacker perfect pass again by bayes armani bush has been really good for washington we knew drexel along with hoffman we're going to be but that ball missed out of bounds a very rare mistake by number nine in purple that is just her second hitting error on 19 swings that brawl drifted all the way to the pin she looked a little bit off balance when she tried to hit that one down the line she looks like this is drexel really prefers the line should the texas block widen out a little bit well she comes until she hits the cross shots well that's why she's so good because she can blast down the line and she can blast it hard across court it's hard to put big spots on her you know why she can do that one she's very good and ella mae powell is one of the best i've seen all seasons she really puts it on the money and drexel gets her feet there those last two steps that's why she can move it all the way around the court and again inside the block and away from jenna gabriel drexel now 13 kills on 21 swings hoffman has nine kills on 17. when we talk about how it starts it always starts with that serve we saw another tough serve forcing a free ball coming over the net perfect bump set that time by the freshman libra obeys eggleston cuffs that ball missed down the line unforced air by texas she was looking for it immediately you know playing the error she knows she missed that one cut it just a little bit too wide interesting story about bays and how she got to the university of washington she has some ties and on bay she played for t street in orange county in california and so did bayley tanner the daughter and former starting center at the university of washington of troy tanner olympic gold medalist in 1988 another washington star tia scambri so there were certainly some connections and maybe some some influence but she is now a washington husky and everybody is happy about that nice play out of the middle and all sets the middle just enough to keep you honest the right time but that's the thing that you'll if you look at the box score you'll say they don't they barely set them at all but they can and they're both very good in front and behind but it's the key the key is the times when did they set them shank pass and getting back to marin grote out of the middle the six foot four junior out of burbank california hitting 411 on the year second best in the pac-12 conference so it doesn't matter when you have the pins that can really score like they they do and you can throw it in there occasionally to your middles that's why they can hit at such a high level 6'4 is the advantage covered by peterson a lot of pressure on texas and eggleston up to it right now they're leaning on her heavily they have to she is their all-american she is their go-to player the best player on this texas team so towards the end of this towards the rest of the match you're going to see her get a ton of sets volleyball one of the quintessential team games you can't do it all by yourself and she needs some help particularly from her bookend schuyler fields who's had a wonderful year but really struggling tonight against this block and defense growth over the top back to field 17 swings four kills for air so she's been set 17 times and net has zero points yeah and that's so unusual it's completely out of the normal for skylark field so we'll see if they can get her going here a little bit in this set shank pass again this will be tracked down free ball coming to washington leading 7-5 oh tip to the floor nice read by ella powell she just kind of snuck up on that one let the ball come to her just waited on it didn't do anything fancy so the block was not expecting it at all time out called by texas what makes the dq six dollar meal deal for real how about the applewood smoked bacon plus a coca-cola fries and a sundae all full-sized all for just six dollars making bff's bacon friends forever dq happy tastes good you thought using nicknames might endear you to your new team did you just call me stanimal turns out they only use that name behind stan's back life's full of hidden problems so we hit a comforting brownie in a franshaw back to serve and serve and receive what do you know has been a huge story asia o'neil cracking that ball down the line and showing a lot of emotion and if there's anyone that can get them going it's asia o'neil she wants to get set every single ball right now too bad she's rotating to the back row but she can still get something done from the service line o'neal has been superb six kills on eight swings no errors texas hitting 571 in this set and trailing by two see that serve is just too easy it's right in the lap of bays again it's a perfect pass maybe they know they're going to set that slide and they get two blockers there with a blocks nut over the net and grow hitting that ball inside the block not going right at the block that's already set waiting for that middle blocker to show up late once again washington did lead the pac-12 and hitting efficiency at 288 they're hitting 420 against texas breon butler nice play by houghton with the pancake there and an unforced air we talked about it during the commercial break are you thinking that coach elliott's got to be looking down the bench and maybe changing setters just because you don't have so many options well and that's the thing it's not like gabriel's playing bad but what can you do what what can you change and mix up to kind of change things up and that that would be an option changing setters right now could mix things up he's got very two capable setters absolutely dug again by eggleston right on target perfect dig fields into the deep cross court corner maybe that'll get her going and texas fans certainly want that to happen for number five in white that's what we saw all year that transition play the good quality touches right to the center fast small fast and high to the outside but those have been few and far between right now for texas the other setter we're talking about was in very briefly at the end of the second stage aina torres a transfer mid-season from utah and there for the utah utes an outstanding program was an honorable mention all-american very capable a little more physical at the net in terms of her ability to get block deflections and she could come in change the tempo of things maybe just the vibe this rotation is where they got stuck in row one with skyler out here on the outside coming to drexel on the right side block is there and got it right on the sideline there was no room down the line drexel still got it i thought she was going to miss that i don't know if they're going to make another adjustment here there's they're going to sub par in for fields down the line melanie parra is a very capable outside hitter she played against texas tech late in the year she can pass she can serve we've seen that good pass there but she can also attack the ball she can that ball deflected out of bounds off of lauren bays she came running in for that tip and thought that was going to hit inside the court and ended up deflecting it out of bounds again must win for texas lost the opening set 25-19 washington hitting at a 400 clip through two sets won the second 25-20. transition to eggleston off the block and out of bounds washington is winning in transition and they're winning decisively in serve and receive well we can't talk enough about base handling the pass and servicing just making it look easy and then defensively wasn't a perfect dig but she got it underneath it baez is passing at a very high efficiency good pass again by para and molly phillips number 15 over the top you've been in this situation you know you're struggling your opponent is is just hitting on all cylinders how do you be patient you look it's like the clock is winding down it's hard and you feel it i mean everyone in the building can feel it and they just have to stay calm and one point at a time look at each other in the eye talk to one another i mean that's the key to keeping the team together right side again rejected o'neill and eggleston for texas drexel tries to tip that one over the top that's what detects this block can hang they can wait for it see it hang and throw it back down claire hoffman available and received but she's been very good they go right at her perfect pass tough swing coming over the top of her head powell is there dig by josiah but rejected sanders out of the middle with some help from drexel number nine number one sanders goes to the sideline nice reach into the cross court i think sometimes you forget just how big this block is because they're hitting she's hitting high this is actually i did it again it looked like it was sanders she got there yeah i took one away from logan eggleston i tried to take that one away from drexel replay keeping me honest that ball missed out of bounds 15 to 10. texas has already used one of its two timeouts and just as i say that texas is now going to use their final timeout they have challenges left and yes you can challenge to try to slow things down right i mean they're going to have to figure out a few things to do is it a challenge are they going to move some passing patterns move some people around but but really it's it's getting this team in a good place they have to get over there and talk to them that they are able to come back i mean it's not we've seen it time after time in the tournament across the season it is possible and the players need to believe it right now two outstanding coaching staffs one led by jared elliot for texas the other by keegan cook tonya johnson eric sullivan long time together they will push every button they possibly can to get back in this match but might be a good idea not to serve lauren bayes ever again as long as long as texas is still in this match she is a rock right now just passing everything right on the money and that's why they're able to get their offense going i mean el may powell is very very good but she doesn't have to work real hard right now to move the ball around because they're handling the ball so well and that's where it's trouble for texas right now not able to slow the ball down defensively got to start thinking about the magnitude of this upset the last time a two went down to a 15. i do remember stanford losing to loyola marymount years ago at home but i don't know what the seating numbers were but look when we came on the air people are probably going oh you're just trying to sell us on this thing a 15 over a two da da washington is that good and if you followed this sport for the last decade you knew it if you followed this team this year you knew it absolutely come into gregory jim a place that's not easy to play completely calm and in control here's bayes tough serve did it get a piece boy good job by eggleston just getting out of the way i thought it hit her actually actually well so did we're going to have a challenge you can challenge ball off a player when the uh challenge said no where keegan cook had the card in his hand he did for a minute he had it wow that's a big decision texas trey link 15-11. rejected a rare bad pass if you will on a pretty easy serve balls off the net she has to bump set this ball behind and look at the texas block we know how good they can be man logan eggleston again up and strong over crossing it hoffman came back claire hoffman she's an opposite a passing opposite and just doing a magnificent job in serve reception they've been handling it holding it down a lot of times in a two person services might have gotten that backwards with drexel and hoffman i apologize [Applause] a little bit of life here for texas some energy some momentum again the crowd getting into it here [Applause] 16-13 time for texas but they cannot miss any opportunities [Applause] drexel available passing opposite down the line but they go after hoffman and she's been so solid keep that ball on your side out of the back row nice job by peterson [Applause] oh what a good read 16-14 timeout washington [Applause] pretty gutsy move oh so gutsy but that's her that's jenna gabriel one of the guts players in the game twice the big 12 center of the year out of honolulu hawaii you mentioned a tough place to play no doubt about that texas winning percentage at home i mean they haven't lost a big 12 match in this building in several seasons it's an incredible run 26-1 overall their only blemish was at baylor they won the big 12 championship again baylor really solid strong season but lost a five-set thriller to minnesota so it'll be minnesota in madison to take on wisconsin on saturday we talked about out of the acc louisville and georgia tech louisville beat georgia tech twice three sets to none during the regular season and the pit panthers versus purdue what about in that one oh you know that's going to be an interesting one you know if purdue can keep their keep their passing and hang and hang on to it but i like pitt i like how they have a lot of really nice arms i don't know that's a that's a toss up right now but man this this one can texas how tough is texas and how patient and resilient right now is washington and that's what we're gonna find out here in a second perfectly stated and we're gonna get the answers here in about the next 10 minutes one will move on one will go home brilliant can texas convert there's a dig by ucf right to the middle of the court that's the transition attack that texas has been so good at all year perfect delivery in transition by gabriel fields starting to find some rhythm [Applause] fields again what a turnaround right now for texas really finding the rhythm finding their stride attacking the ball hard but this is a tough rotation right now for from washington a great pickup there by peterson they've got bush on the outside they can use the back row attack if they can pass this ball well and not off the net nine digs for the senior peterson out of dike iowa phenomenal performance another gig eggleston really good choice texas is rolling right now again having a hard time finding a side out that's washington right now serving hoffman and you'll notice that ball is pulled just far enough off the net they can't set growth in this rotation at all so the middle's out of the play you've got shannon cranshaw now on the left side here for bush torres six foot junior coming in now a little more size up front [Applause] 7-1 run for texas to take the advantage that ball tucked down inside by grove that's what they needed to get going that ball was just too far off the net earlier for grove to get around to hit that slide she knew she had to get it to her in that rotation if she could shannon crenshaw bouncing back and forth outside hitter then libero now back to the outside it's for a nice percentage [Applause] all set tight tipped over the top and just the lines if the ball was out right the linesman to our right we might have a challenge is doing his job that ball was in down the line but the other lions person caddie corner saw it long right that was just as it's supposed to be called exactly let's see if it goes in from his vantage point you saw it out did you see him yeah crowd doesn't like to call [Applause] really good block touch huge right there hoffman again texas scrambling what a smart shot over the top by claire hoffman either at the opposite or the outside 10 kills on 24 swings got the defense on the run there with that tip [Applause] lma powell early in the rally with the block deflection against fields one-on-one that was huge fields again yeah that ball is good really good bounce back by number five she's a superb player wonderful athlete but again she was four for 17 with four errors now she's got eight kills taking a lot of pressure swings making her way back hitting that one smartly over top kind of down the line towards that half of the court at times asia o'neil has been a very good server during her career good handle by hoffman and grot into the antenna they said it was into the antenna washington thought they got the point you can see the texas coaching staff and players oh i don't know i don't know either i honestly couldn't see it well so was that the net moving did that hit it i think this is worth the challenge yeah we're going to have a challenge yeah you got to take a look at this one did this ball i don't know i don't know i think it does actually no i didn't say it didn't i said i don't know a huge moment in this match the ball was called good okay so now let's see if texas is in the net here i i don't see a net violation there i do see some vibration on the antenna and by rule if the ball contacts the antenna yeah good use of the challenge so rule the official is certain that the attack by washington contacted the antenna so take the point off the board and we're tied at 19. once again washington on top two sets to none texas the number two seed washington the number 15 seed keegan took nose he does not want to extend this he has to close it here with all the momentum right now on the texas side easy serve nice dig by o'neal what a dig by the middle blocker stabbed by crenshaw stuffed by texas in the left back laying out for that ball digging it perfectly to jenna wow jermaine is up block off and out of bounds service right in the lap of bayes who dialed up a perfect first contact tied at 20. [Applause] peterson has been superb fields again sydney peterson in reception serve and defense has been fantastic for texas solid steady she's been a rock she's been here a long time this is her last go and she knows what she needs to do for her team used to be the starting libero she lost that spot to nalana yusias but carved out a very productive position texas leading 21-20 dig by eggleston can you get a swing out of it not yet back to hoffman off the top of the block and down for number 21. texas has picked up the defense they've picked up their just their movement on the court you can see it how they're attacking the ball just at a different level right now it's that rotation again drexel hoffman sanders up front lma powell at the service line row run going right at schuyler fields again perfect pass one on one okay jenna gabriel is setting a nice match she's had to run around a lot because the reception has not been nearly as good for texas as for washington perfect rhythm right now our hitters are in it they're able to really get on top of the ball right now look who's at the service line time out called by washington that's a really smart time out by one of the best in the business keegan cook because he knows that melanie parra is one of the most dangerous servers not in austin in the country now absolutely you got to cool her off right now make her think about it give her some time to think about getting back at the service line see if he can force an error here out of this timeout it's been a wonderful day of college volleyball still to come illinois and nebraska illinois taking out the defending national champions last week biggest upset of the tournament in kentucky nebraska comes in as the number 10 seed 15-3 in the ever powerful big ten conference they were runners-up to wisconsin in the big ten that one still to come pittsburgh has advanced let's take a look at the other side of the bracket there will be an acc team either louisville or georgia tech going to columbus ohio that's an acc team for the first time since florida state in 2011 in the bottom of the bracket oh what do you know there'll be a big tent there'll be a big 10 team there's been a big 10 team in the national semifinals every year since 2007. yeah crazy but the acc you've got to just really give credit to that conference and how they've really grown it and built and pit on the other side yeah pitt has it pit has a chance yeah when you look at what the acc did this year they got six teams into the tournament louisville pitt and georgia tech are still playing miami had a very very good season they went down to florida florida state as well in north carolina with the teams out of the acc now a huge moment for texas volleyball and melanie park [Applause] right to base perfect first contact and it's roofed the block is there the ball is passed they know exactly where it's going get both blockers up and ready see butler took a little shade there but still made up some room get in on the block as well again must win for texas two points away from getting on the board and staying alive block touch a clutch set swing and pass drexel again she's just so good no matter where that ball is and where it lands she saw that it was tight smart off the hands do you have to go to eggleston here i mean on perfect pass you could go to eggleston yes or you go to philip she's been super effective on the right side of the court as well pretty good pass as i thought out to eggleston who comes through she's your go-to that's what you're gonna do set points for texas good blocking lineup phillips at six foot five asia o'neil along with eggleston up front here is josiah [Applause] very easy serve nothing easy about that stuff wow and sanders took a hard facial off that block let's hope that she's all right coach coming out to check but what a great gutty comeback you said it perfectly patience guts tremendous comeback performance with their backs up against the wall by the longhorns who are on the board well just what we knew would happen we have got ourselves a match texas backs against the wall can't say it often enough schuyler fields found her footing and they take that set 25-22 it was really a slow start for skyler field but she found it and then you can see the teeth just start heating up she carried them on her back really wanting to get set and moving the ball around but that's the scalar fields that you saw all season just needed to find it here and she found it in the third set very slow start four kills 17 but also four errors so it's zero net wise it's zero she came on and hit some very clutch balls nice play out of the minute underway here in the fourth set this is the austin regional number two seed texas taking on the 15 seed pac-12 champions out of washington still to come it'll be a big ten rematch between illinois and nebraska has the energy change in the building you can just feel the buzz it went from fright to fervor pays good contact damani bush back on the floor after giving way to crenshaw at the end of that set [Applause] high flat swing and errors are starting to mount on the side of washington well when you have that big block in front of you drexel's gotten blocked a couple of times straight down she's now looking to avoid the block and move it around and that's what she's taking out but just in terms of sheer numbers when washington hit well over 400 in the first two sets they had a grand total of six hitting errors they had eight hitting errors alone in the third nice dig by ucia what is different about texas they're defending drexel a lot differently right now so they only have one real option they don't want to set bush a lot right now they want to get her the ball but texas putting the block in the right spot you'll see it deep down the line so they're neutralizing her right now so wearing number 11 in purple shannon crenshaw the 6-2 junior out of florida back on to replace bush on the left side [Applause] good hustle by gabriel ball's not down yet [Applause] bye i knew that was trouble tough chance for number 11 against that big block quick start for the longhorns leading four nothing in the fourth it's v week at espn and our partnership with the v foundation highlights the urgent need for cancer research and the elimination of racial disparities in cancer outcomes you can learn more and help support by visiting v.org donate 100 of your donation goes directly to cancer research a very very noble cause give when you can and give as much as you can here's you'll see it off the top of the tape what a turn of events we're talking about texas all night long and how they respond what about adjustments now from washington well washington just has to stay under control here and stay calm you know right now that i mean that's a lucky roll off the tape and move the ball around a little bit more keep the ball off the net so they can hit around the block look at this and ladies and gentlemen nobody tries to intentionally serve the ball off the top of the tape no two accidents in a row but she'll take it you see the aces starting to even out six nothing start for eusea and texas but a long way to go poor set a very poor set that time by lma powell that's probably been said about three times all year well that's where you see maybe some of the nerves creeping in and the anxiety and the magnitude of this match when texas just pushing back and you feel like you're in complete control and it could be a sweep and here you are in the fourth down 7-0 [Applause] overpass and that's going to be an interesting call i want to see how the official sorts this one out so we'll see who who touched this ball last really that's the key powell went up it was a very odd play usually there's much there's quite a bit of a joust there's the set up she's still the ball was in the play yeah it was it was a very unusual it's a judgment call on the first referee deemed that the ball went off of powell and ruled that she was a back row blocker excuse me yes a back row blocker as opposed to of course a front row blocker which would kind of be okay everything go in the way of the longhorns nine nothing oh they are rolling right now and washington needs to change some things around find some options offensively maddie ensley checks into the game for shannon crenshaw let's see if she can get her arm going maddie ensley was a top freshman last year but has been out of the rotation since those adjustments we talked about at the start of pac-12 play a very capable left side hitter nice response and finally on the board and who else but samantha drexel 9-1 a magnificent start to this fourth set by the second seeded longhorns that's a huge lead it's a hard one to make up against a team like texas chopping inside the block is eggleston what a cut passes that ball perfectly looking so comfortable out there right now here's that pass to attack cuts it just inside the block more on number 18 ensley 6-2 freshman out of temecula california pac-12 all-freshman team last year and region freshman of the year last year 2.7 kills 209 this year hitting 195. she's got a heavy arm she's either going to thump one to the ground a good block straight down drexel again outside the block and down and so impressed with number 21 claire hoffman serving her a lot as texas and very much up to the task still holding it down and drexel finding her way coming back as well finding her way around the block tough serve and it goes down as an ace sydney peterson we've talked about the level of her performance so far on the night that was just a tough serve sometimes your opponent is a little bit better that's it and that ball just dropped and died right in front of her slam dink out of the middle [Applause] eggleston is trying to locate that high tipped wear she's trying to tip it right in the middle of the court there's no defense and when you're that high and you can push it straight down no one can get to it sometimes you miss a little bit and you're going to get a hand on it look at that another double double six blocks 11 digs [Applause] passing starting to get a little bit shaky and there is ensley what an important kill for washington and number 18 in purple she will give way he'll go front court back court it was the same for amani bush who's now on the sideline crenshaw comes back on 11-4 is the lead for texas [Applause] good pass a near collision there i was lucky that somebody didn't get hurt baze was underneath the block and they oh look at that they they called they called asia o'neal for violating the plane explain you can see that she's saying the ball never crossed the plane it was completely on the washington side of the of the net when she went over and pushed that ball down here's the look look at it yep yep good call yep good call that's a great look on the net camera if if a micro fiber of the ball jermaine didn't like it if if the smallest portion of the ball is in the plane then it's legal but that was that was a good call completely there yeah skyler fields again [Applause] when you were coaching and you had somebody like fields or eggleston or on the other side drexel or hoffman and they were clearly struggling what would be your message to them well the message is you just have to relax and play your game because it looks she looks stressed she looks a little not like herself early on and it's really just loosening him up a little bit maybe even cracking a joke telling him everything's gonna be okay it's not that serious just play your game shot into the block recycle hoffman again covered by crenshaw and a net violation was called against texas well you mentioned something about texas's demeanor at practice yesterday you know and it was one of those it was hard to tell they just super focused and dialed in there was no music playing they weren't really joking around like a lot of the other teams that we saw so it struck me and i was a little concerned at the beginning because of that but not really concerned about that anymore schuyler fields boy does she deserve a lot of credit look at the confidence that her coaching staff showed in her why not i mean she's had an all-american career big 12 first team once again she started four of 17 now has 12 kills on 36 swings she came back i mean she got subbed out a couple times had to take a little breather but it's her she rallied back good block touch chance again in transition eagleston going quickly boy love the offensive tempo for washington quick hits that ball fast and deep into the cord not straight down that's that's the ball i need to hit again texas block has started to heat up and really getting in place that speed is going to keep them from doing that texas defense is dialed in as well holding washington right now to five of 17 with four errors cross body out of the middle how about skyler fields passing that ball perfectly down the line that's where she got cut stuck and they were stuck 10 times with powell serving that ball straight down the line fields really responding in every way washington hitting 111 in this set breon butler in texas 5-33 [Applause] we've been waiting on it saw it all season that short little toss and then just the speed and the pace on that ball get in the ace second service winner on the night for melanie parra tight set eggleston all over that everything all the bounces from josiah on the serve and now from molly phillips off the top of the dick timeout washington these teams playing for the first time in the ncaa tournament sophie summers six foot three redshirt freshman out of portland on the floor now wearing number 22. [Applause] drexel blocked once and then misses it out of bounds hitting errors again remember six through the first two sets eight in the third well the difference has been the texas block in place in their face and they're trying to hit around it those unforced errors and moving that ball away from the block [Applause] good serving run for para and work at the defensive end jenna gabriel again doing an outstanding job setting in transition good location 18-7 melanie parra is feeling it at the service line you can always see when she's starting to feel it and right now she's in a good rhythm five-nothing run behind par a crowd of almost 4 500 officially the building only holds 4 000. look at that sir this is getting away from washington this serves so tough right in the seam right on the end line good pass by crenshaw and rejected there is nothing right now that washington can do to get around the block to find the floor texas has found their rhythm butler shimmies over there and closes the block texas has played only one five set match all season that was at kansas washington i just checked has played in six really good contact and the sky dink again [Applause] that's why they train in practice so much that transition ball that's tight to the net eggleston could go just over the top and find that empty spot on the floor [Applause] well it didn't look like it an hour and a half ago but we're playing five salima with nebraska and illinois still to come [Applause] listen to the ovation from melanie barr went on a huge run they know she's capable of it crowd loves it eight point run for para from the service line with some help team played very good blocking defense behind question butler again on the cross body away from powell kind of mishit that ball and laughed after she she got it down but she got it down does that kind of recent experience in five set pressure cookers give washington the advantage you know i it can but right now this momentum you know i would say differently if the if the set was a little bit closer but the way it's gotten away from them i'm not sure [Applause] ensley misses it out of bounds and i'm going to correct myself melania ocea is trying to serve off the top of the tape she has to be two aces of that kind the dribblers as we call them and almost had another wow [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ensley again chance for eggleston high off the block and phillips trying to save that ball fisted it just out of bounds but still a huge lead for texas we're going five well and everything's been different the energy on the floor the floor defense everybody's scrapping for every play nothing is falling without someone on the texas side going after the ball the texas block and defense and their serving game quite frankly has done a magnificent job give you the numbers in a moment there's another after two sets washington was hitting 400 through two sets right now in the match they're hitting 230 so they have really been cooled off texas hit 222 in the opening set they're now hitting 339 which is up near their season average after a very slow start set point number one eggleston [Applause] double contact and we're going five [Applause] washington wins the first two texas comes storming back 15 point tie breaker to stay alive all right at two sets apiece washington the number fifth seed two champions going at one another the big 12 champs the number two seeded texas longhorns match summary i mean funny thing happened on the way to a sweep for for washington after winning the first couple of sets wow really remarkable and credit to both teams and credit to texas they had to win the third they did they had to win the fourth paul sunderland back with selena rockwell take us to either side my goodness well washington definitely has to get their serving game going again they were so good serving and texas was out of sorts and not siding out of normal percentages but the script completely flipped they are now washington signing out at 29 in that last set and texas at 80 so it's been a completely different game texas has to keep doing what they've been doing not change a thing and they have to get their serving game going for washington in the blog touch the washington serving phase really controlled this match through the first two sets you've got to hand it to the texas coaching staff pushing some buttons making some changes and texas sorted itself out they started serving tougher on their own side and also started controlling the ball beginning of this 15 point tie breaker two timeouts per team powell will start things off and this is that [Applause] challenges could be very important we're confirming right now how many challenges definitively each team has remaining remember that challenge on the shot down the line when the ball hit the antenna wow that's right here's josiah josiah peterson parra have been exceptional in this phase and another another service winner just driving that ball straight down the line at one of the better passers on the team she was the former libero shannon crenshaw who can handle the ball but yosea was threading the needle getting an honor each team has three challenges remaining playing a fifth set you get an additional challenge in between two defenders nice play by hoffman number 21. let's update some numbers dresco leading the way with 19 kills but both g and hoffman have really cooled off wrote with seven imani bush with five eggleston with 19 skylar fields started out very poorly now with 12. tough serve look at eggleston past the ball molly phillips off the edge of the book and very quietly having a really good match nine kills now on 20 swings hitting well over 300 that's what we always say about molly phillips you look at the statue like oh wait a minute yeah she's really good she's always really good it's not a huge thump you don't you know wow the crowd but man molly phillips always gets it done quick 3-1 lead for sydney peterson and texas perfect pass and missed out of balance [Applause] hitting errors that's been the story right now i mean drexel so hot early on for two full sets was so good but now hitting the ball out of bounds only six hitting errors through the first two sets for washington 15 cents good block nice play by amani bush [Applause] the question is gonna be is washington are they gonna be pressing right now that's what it looks like they need to just stay calm stay relaxed they know they can hang with texas even though they have all the momentum short serve pretty good idea but lauren baez who's played a superb match at the library missed that logan eggleston will go back to the line 5-2 advantage now for texas they trailed two sets to none she's going to go deep into that cross court from five to five go after hoffman here trying to pull him off the net [Applause] without a system tough swing for bush and got the job done imani bush number four in purple what a clutch swing that's a big play inside the block the numbers speak for themselves all the hitting errors but what has texas done to really slow down and put pressure on the washington offense well it's been the block they got a couple huge stuff blocks and then you have to work your way around it they're serving and blocking is really really good right now and so washington has to change some things powell with the first touch [Applause] doesn't stand very often i don't think he sat down until the middle since the middle of that third set 19 years in the nba an all-star on many occasions [Applause] 6-3 is the lead 15-point tiebreaker 40 had a couple of five setters that missed by o'neal baylor and minnesota went five purdue and byu earlier today regional finals on saturday illinois and nebraska still to come [Applause] fields boy did she dig herself out of a huge hole i guess when they say when you're in a hole stop digging she stopped digging she sure did filled it up and jumped off of it she is unstoppable right now was hitting zero now 12 of 37. i could quickly do the math but suffice it to say in the third and fourth and the fifth she's played brilliantly that's too easy to serve that's too easy perfect pass again by bayes washington's gotten out of a couple of rotations that aren't their strongest one so they had bush up there they got miser by asia o'neal so they got out of that rotation texas letting him off the hook a little bit in a couple rotations yeah it's 7-5 and defensive specialist emma collay 511 senior on part of oh that's an unfortunate miss part of the most successful senior class in washington history which is saying an awful lot that's tough i think that was a third mid-serve perhaps in this set by washington media timeout 8-5 advantage in the tiebreaker for texas a tale of two matches look how hot nearly perfect was the level of play for keegan cook's washington huskies as i mentioned if you average that out hitting 400 through the first two sets since then hitting barely above well and that's one of those things can you sustain that level of play over the course of a match i mean they were playing out of their minds obviously they couldn't but really texas has forced them to play under their normal level play in the last two and a half sets parra is back on feed a nine nothing run in the fourth set one easily by texas 25 tonight tight pass watch the tip breon butler now with nine kills on 17 swings great pick up by ucf seeing that tip attack perfectly to gabriel they know where to get the ball right now they have to get it to butler when it was absolutely required it seems to me that texas was able to turn it up defensively 11 blocks 51 digs and some really good setting by gabriel in transition it was just a complete shift and we talked about that when they were sitting in the timeout they had to believe and that's what it came out they looked like they believed once again nebraska and illinois still to come texas looking to get back into a regional final 16 straight regional rounds for the texas longhorns now the longest active streak in college volleyball after penn state's streak of 18 came to an end at the hand of the pit panthers 25 times the texas longhorns have made it to the regional finals and this would be certainly one of the most memorable there is the bracket once again the pit panthers just the right side of the bracket they will take on purdue saturday at 4 eastern time on espnu and then the finals of this section of the bracket either illinois nebraska or washington or texas at 10 eastern time also on espnu thanks so much for staying with us brilliant day of college volleyball interesting up and down roller coaster exciting reverse sweep the tournament nine five nine five now is the advantage for para and texas jermaine is still standing man he's he's almost seven feet tall i hate to be behind him and that missed out of bounds washington has plenty of hope it's 9-6 there have been lots of good runs by the huskies they've been very very good they can continue to do that from the service line see if they go off to the para ucia area of the court really good rotation now for the huskies good pass by para [Applause] coming to hoffman set a little bit tight setting mistakes starting to creep into the game of washington a couple of those tight balls some that are falling down and into the court and look how tight this is but phillips completely gets outside of that ball does not get tooled she knew what was coming at her ace off the tape out for sure sanders quickly out of the middle good pass and delivery by lma powell sanders talked about she's capable of getting her kills you don't see it much they've been passing well enough to get her the ball see if they get it to her just a little bit more to move things around is hoffman chance for washington oh what a shot wow the whole area was voided wide open in area two for eggleston brilliant this is why she's one of the best players she gets her feet there sees that there's no one there in the right back right over top of a block finds it eggleston now with 20 kills 12 digs [Applause] has been really good unsung hero para has been so good not just in serve but also in reception she had to be it's been crucial for them that ball was down off speed shot won't say plenty but some sometime for washington yes there is some time we've seen it in earlier matches we saw it with the purdue byu match over until it's over look at the pass by par that was a really good serve free ball texas o'neil again [Applause] so much offense so much confidence on that side survive not one but two open-heart surgeries you think they went in there and made it a little bigger for sure well one of the one of the many emotional leaders for texas what a comeback three points away washington's got to be perfect serve fields inside the block time out [Applause] as the block touch that they've been so good at the last three sets texas transitioning off of that attack going hard after everything man and rallied back here in this set some of the defensive numbers eggleston with a dozen jenna gabriel with nine digs sydney peterson with 11 in part-time duty and melania usia as well with 10 digs and three aces 13-8 to recap washington playing at a just superb beautiful level of volleyball through the first two sets 25 19 25 20. 25-22 pressure on texas they win it and then in a beat down 25-9 and now at 13-8 just a remarkable turnaround but it really shows you so much about tells you a lot about that team well they were on the ropes texas was clearly on the road completely on the road they were being outplayed and they just didn't look like it was their night but if you go back to the fourth set the run now is 38-17 texas over washington a really really good team from washington we've seen some crazy stuff today we have did you say purdue byu oh yeah [Applause] tight pass that's going to be texas ball good play by asia o'neil lmao powell is going to be ruled violating the plane as a back row blocker and keegan cook you you got a challenge she is furious right now style man just really showing a lot of emotion after that play frustration for sure at the end of this set oh i don't think that ball was across the plane i don't think so either and forget about the hair in the net that is not a violation so this is going to be very interesting indeed we've had a couple of very very crucial challenges element powell coming all the way from fayetteville arkansas to beautiful northwest and speaking of the arkansas area hannah allison yes anna allison the starting setter for texas when they won their last national championship there is hannah allison the same club the same club coach that produced allison and an ncaa champion also produced lma powell one of the best in the business setter of the year in the pac-12 and allison and there's sarah palmer right next to her good to see the former players back here six match points what a turnaround to fields o'neill on the slide not yet bayes is there good set in transition looking for hands and skylar field smart swing good high flat swing just missed it long going nice and deep and that's what they want to do they have plenty of time here got to go after it but it's still a smart swing second match point [Applause] fields again [Applause] one of the most impressive comebacks that we have seen being down and out i mean it really looked like it was over texas flat in the beginning of that match and give credit to washington played so well in the first two sets came out on a mission and just couldn't sustain that level of play against texas two incredibly classy programs classy staffs and players you knew that the 15 next to washington as the seed meant absolutely nothing and for the texas longhorns just a world of credit because they were they were millimeters away from getting knocked out and they will move on to saturday's regional final there is ashley shook now at the university of washington former all america honorable mention all-american center where she began her career well what a comeback and now for tonight's top performer brought to you by buick logan eggleston another magnificent all-around performance hit 4 41 20 kills 13 digs had an ace and texas has moved in to the regional finals for the 26th time they will take on either illinois or nebraska which will start in approximately 30 minutes but what a night and logan eggleston is on with us now logan first of all tremendous congratulations to you on another wonderful individual performance but didn't it take 12 strong 20 strong whatever it might have been to come back and pull this out because you were close you were on the edge of losing yeah um i think i mean you're right we were almost on the edge of losing and that's not what we wanted to do this year and that's not in our plan so we came together we figured it out and then we won that game you know i'm so proud of how everyone responded it's hard to play a good team like that you know they're really balanced they do really great things i'm just really proud of how i responded to those first two sets and came back and won it all i'm so curious in that third set you guys were in a timeout and we're up here we're saying we're gonna know right here we're gonna figure it out but you guys were having your own conversation without the coaches what was being said in that moment hey i mean we're we're a player driven team the coaches aren't the ones on the course so we were just telling it to other that we have to want it more than them and i think we did in the end and we just outworked them we did what we had to do we were relentless in every aspect of the game and that's what that's what it looks like when we do that skyler fields your bookend on the outside struggled early she was four of 17 with four errors but was truly magnificent down the stretch what was your communication with her and how do you how much credit do you give her for turning her match around skyler's a huge part of that win you know i think after that second set i just told her how much i trust her and how much i knew that she was going to win the game for us you know i think she has big games she could do amazing things we had to just put that confidence right back in here and hey when she performs like that she's really hard to stop so i'm just super proud of her i'm super proud of the way she responded and you know i want to go all the way with her that's my bestie sidney peterson no jolani josiah and and and also in the backcourt as well melanie paro were just tremendous really great performance by your team and congratulations thank you so much they're awesome love them you're pretty good too thanks logan logan eggleston our performer of the night brought to you by buick and we said there was another match to come a lot has happened and nebraska on your left the number 10 overall seed taking on the unseated fighting illini a little less than 30 minutes now so we will interview as many people as we can find and have a pretty nice break jenna gabriel joining us now jenna congratulations on a magnificent comeback win i guess it is the reverse sweep it is the year of the reverse sweep but we were saying the same thing with logan washington was playing brilliantly they took you out of your game how did you get back into some sort of rhythm and come back from right on the edge of elimination i think that it really just came down to this team's like genuine accountability i think i mean we went into our team room in between the second and the third set and we looked at each other and we're like look if we're not gonna give absolutely everything we have in this next play we're gonna go home and we've worked way too hard for that and we all just looked at each other in the eyes and we're like okay like i have your back you have mine let's go out and win this thing and after that i don't think anybody had a doubt in the world that that was our game well everything changed and it flipped around in a hurry but really talk about your block your block was so good tonight they flipped it in the middle of that second set and really started to come on yeah i mean we've been working all week in practice on on our blocking just being low and over washington does an amazing job of just like finding the edges and that's something that's really difficult to adjust to i think our defense in the back row did so good of just being stopped and still and ready to just like run down those balls that were deflected off the block and once we started doing that we were in system so much more and everything started to flow jenna you talked about communication and trust among your teammates and giving 100 but you still have to execute on the floor against a very very good team what areas did you just completely raise the level of your game to make this comeback possible i think our first ball touch just changed completely i mean like we don't our in our gym like a perfect pass isn't a perfect like isn't a pass that's two feet off the net it's a ball that's high up and down six to eight feet off of the net i looked at my passers before that third set and said that's all i want from you guys that's exactly what they gave me and i think that it transformed the game completely jenna a little bit of history just got handed a note this is the 20th time ever the texas has trailed two sets to none in the ncaa tournament it's the first time ever texas has come back to win so a little bit of history and just a remarkable comeback by your team congratulations thank you so much we will see you on saturday what a match in that regional semifinal texas into a regional final for the 26th time illinois and nebraska warming up for their match a look at the score line once again look at those scores 25 9 15-9 once texas flipped the switch there was no turning it off
