Johnny Manziel REACTS to BIG GAMES from Cam Ward & Travis Hunter | College Football Week 1 | BBOC

he looked awful the passing offense looked broken there's still time here anytime you have a quarterback that's in his system um you're going to be able to go put up numbers I feel like I'm watching the sequel to a movie I just don't know if this is The Empire Strikes Back or if this is Jaws 2 the big bets on campus podcast podcast podcast all right here we go hello and welcome to the first episode of Johnny's intangibles I'm Stucky and joining me today are Johnny Manzel and my bboc fellow co-host Colin Wilson each and every week we're going to talk about some of the biggest Topics in the college football world with a betting slant and we're always G to kick things off with Johnny's MVP of the week and if Conor I want to throw a shout out to anybody over the weekend we will do just that but first I have to ask you Johnny about college game day and your experience there I do have to give you some uh you you picked Vandy on our video uh we do a segment at the end of each week for your Hail Mary pick of the week you're one of one with a huge Underdog that hit and you created it under pressure and went with vek on set I got a bunch of tweets saying Johnny picked vek he said Vandy on on the Hail Mary segment uh so were you feeling the heat there or what happened I think as we were just getting up early in the morning and just kind of getting to the show um you know just kind of one of those things I think that happened a little bit but obviously hail Mar hail Mar of the week last week going with Bandy and then as it came down to the nitty-gritty um and you know got sent to picks on game day for some reason it didn't even correlate with me so I definitely should have doubled down and went with Vandy they had a amazing week in week one um something we talked about last week a little bit and was you know obviously awesome to see you know them get that win in the first week of the season but yeah definitely uh definitely got a little scared of the pressure there and and and went with the favorite there at the end and and kind of second guessed myself a little bit look I don't blame you on national TV picking vanderville to win a football game uh the pressure can get to you but how how was it overall was it uh like when did you get there when did you start preparing and then just how did it go yeah I think you know game day for me was something that I kind of always wanted to do um seen that show throughout the years and you know just getting a chance to um do it in Agy land was obviously really really special you know we had an unbelievably crazy crowd that was there for the you know probably from 6:00 7 am. in the morning uh but got there about 8 you know had a little bit of a time to go over and kind of watch the show in the back and then it was a pretty you know quick easy little segment you know there's a bunch of people who I've had relationships with that are you know obviously on the desk up there but a lot of energy a lot I mean adding McAfee to that show and having him there with a guy like Sav sitting next to him I think you guys probably saw a lot of things throughout the week of um kind of the videos of of McAfee getting into his rhythm a little bit and then Sab just sitting there kind of looking at him so it was really funny to see the dynamic of how that whole crew works but obviously you know an amazing experience so when McAfee tears his shirt off was there any kind of like impulse in you like I can do this tear my shirt off and and pose for the crowd like could be right I I think I think that's right up his alley you know and I'm sitting there right there next to him and kind of caught me off guard I'm sitting there I'm like damn this guy's looking great today he's know this a nice outfit he's got on then out of nowhere he pulls it off and rips probably every button on his entire shirt so you know it was kind of I wasn't expecting it at all but I definitely wasn't uh wasn't following suit oh so you didn't even know that he was goingon to do it it wasn't like in the script or anything no I didn't I didn't I didn't have any preconceived little little idea that he was goingon to do that so it was definitely off the cup but very uh very mcky that's amazing all right well we'll get to the Texas M result in a bit but let's go to your MVP of week one who do you got yeah I think there was a lot of guys who were obviously you know played really really great in the first opening week of the season but the guy who stuck out to me the most was T-Mac tedar Ro McMillan from the University of Arizona I mean this guy goes off for 10 catches 304 yards you know I got a chance whenever I was playing to to watch a guy go off for 280 and 260 so to see you know a guy going off for 300 100 touchdowns of 69 78 and 40 and then adds a 17 Yer in there just to kind of make a little bit of a splash you know it's a new school record anytime you do anything that takes you know 91 seasons of your football's history and you come and break something like that I think is truly a special week you know it's one um the first 300 yard performance that we've had in college football since 2022 it's it doesn't happen a lot whatsoever and it's really only you know one of six receivers um to fit this in the last decade so anything you're doing something that the first time in school history you know something that hasn't been touched throughout the FBS in an entire um decade of play you know we watch a lot of games every week there's a lot of games that are played every week anytime you're able to go and do something like that really come out and make a statement on the season um I think this guy's going to be something to watch you know throughout the rest of the year and definitely keep an eye on yeah he is an absolute St he could have had more he got was down at the one on another potential touchdown it also became a blowout late so they didn't need him but this his the combination of his size and then how how quick he is he looks like he's he's just on a different level when he's running and with how big he is uh yeah super fun to watch other candidates cam Ward who we'll talk about in just a moment we talk updated Heisman race Ashton jenty who went off for a number of long runs for Boise State R for 267 to go along with six touchdowns one of the best backs in the country that Boise was able to hold on to and then of course Travis Hunter also had a big night on both sides of the ball and I'll throw a random one out there I'll throw uh Damon Ward for North Texas had 12 catches uh 230 yards and two touchdowns for the mean green huge day in an upset win over South Alabama col anyone you want to throw out uh Coulson Loveland you want to throw out Coulson Loveland because you're you're going to try to tell me this speak on the podcast that Michigan's going to beat Texas but if you want to go on percentage of receiving yards it's got to be close and loving because I don't even think Michigan's receivers had a catch they might had like three catches for 20 yards well let's not spoil the podcast from Thursday but yeah there's going to be a heavy Michigan bias I want to say I want to catch on to what Johnny said about McMillan I think what's amazing about Arizona is that the handicap and preseason was a Brim Brenan and Dino babers we're not going to go away from the jetfish pro style offense and go to that strict spread that Dino likes to run whatever offense it is that Arizona came up with it is working for 304 yards and four touchdowns whatever the hybrid is keep it going with them if I'm going to go with a player let's go to one of pff's heest graded quarterbacks of the weekend Kirk Francis of Tulsa had five Big Time throws one turnover worthy play we didn't think Tulsa was able to produce anything they might not be for the rest of the year but four touchdowns on the day no matter what the competition is looks like golden hurricane uh might have a quarterback all right good stuff there let's shock you didn't mention anyone in Arkansas by the way but let's uh let's move on to our college football playoff race checkin and after the first two weeks if you include week zero and the reason you have to include week zero is is because Florida State already has two losses you would think in today's day and age with the new expanded college football playoff format you can't be out of it by week one but Florida State somehow is out of it they dropped a 0 and2 dropping both of their first games as double digit favorites in the ACC ACC as a whole also has not looked great Clemson didn't show well against Georgia vatch lost to Vandy LSU obviously now is an uphill climb and so does Texas A&M now Texas A&M sells all of its toughest games ahead of it in College Station but they need to figure out that offense is so Johnny I mean Conor Wegman he looked awful the passing offense looked broken there's still time here before I get your thoughts on it they can correct it who better to ask about where Wegman could be psychologically than you you in your first game I believe against Florida had a rough performance you get for sale signs out talk a little bit about you know what that reaction was after that game and then how you were able to bounce back did you you know start to doubt yourself how did you kind of get focused going forward I think the good thing for ANM right now is obviously getting in to go into a little easier game this week right they're going to go into a week of practice obviously trying to clean up what they had um wrong in this week one of the season but obviously getting a little bit easier opponent in week two and I think that's kind of where uh for me in my process you know you go from playing a hard-nosed really good defense in Florida like I did my first year I think Wegman kind of in the same situation and playing a really really good um Notre Dame team that had a lot of scheme um a lot of guys flying around on defense and just kind of got him rattled from the from the very beginning I think as you go through your season you know you go back to practice um this week it is a little bit dejecting obviously getting in after having to go watch that film and seeing you know 100 pass yards um and and really you know a tough day at the office for them but I think obviously with their opponent they have going into week two it's a confidence Builder you know right to be able to get into your sets get into your plays um and see these things against an opponent um compared to you know seeing it in practice against your own guys what was what was the roughest moment that you can remember after that week one game before week two I think just looking back and seeing missed opportunities you know I think wigman's going to go back and see a couple throws you know he had a Crossing route that he overthrew a little bit that ended up getting picked and another turn over that you had um you know pretty much in their own in their own um side of the field I think when you go back and look at those on film those are the things that make you the most sick you know especially in mine I went back and looked at that Florida game and was like man we were really really in this if you just make a couple different throws couple different decisions and plays and I think that's what sticks with you for the first couple days of the week but it's something you have to have a very um you have to have a very quick you know release of these things and quick you know mindset adjust because this season is just getting started for A&M um and they're going to need him to play well if they're going to have any chance obviously moving forward in this season yeah that that for sale signs that that that's a true story from your documentary yeah definitely I remember getting back uh back home and seeing a lot of them in the front yard and I think it's just one of those things about SEC football right you know if they take it really really serious A&M as a football school I mean 107,000 people there to watch that game against Notre Dame this week and obviously I think everybody left kind of the same way that I did with the sour taste in your mouth and you know really really questioning uh you know what the season looks like for them now after game one but it's easy to get down after one game I think they'll clean it up and make some adjustments can you see the offense turning it around or do you need to see more first before you can say that I mean I really do think I need to see more first you know we didn't I mean I think we had 170 something 180 yards offense throughout a game that's just a really really slow day and I think if you look at A&M as a team you know they have a defense that's there in caliber and and in offense right now that's struggling to find a little bit of an identity I think obviously new offensive coordinator you know getting your guys together and you obviously have a very tough opponent coming out of the gate in week one but um they're going to need to find a way to gel and mesh and and definitely it starts with the quarterback position yeah yeah definitely going up against one of the better defenses in the country right off the bat didn't make things any easier and had some guys get banged up along the offensive line which threw a wrench into things as well so we'll see how A&M bounces back but a nice opponent to do that against and then you you go to Florida who knows where Florida will be mentally by that point in time on the well I guess one more on the negative I I kind of put Michigan and Texas A&M in the same bucket I know Michigan won their game but they were playing Fresno stayed at home but the passing game was just not there the receivers were not there the quarterback play was not there which I think ultimately is going to hold them back from the college football playoff so if you look at the college B puff 12 spots one goes to a group of five Notre Dame obviously position themselves very well to make it because they're probably going to be favored in their next 11 games they do go to USC who looked better at the end of the season but if you kind of pars this out Georgia Notre Dame Texas Ohio State Oregon Penn State didn't slip at Morgantown they looked good then you have your big 12 winner your ACC winner and then there's three spots left I don't know how many SEC teams is it do they take them all you have Old Miss Bama Missouri Tennessee Texas A&M LSU all in the mix maybe another team can slide in there but I think that after this weekend col I'll throw this to you Miami I mean they just look Head and Shoulders above everybody else in the ACC any bets you like there or any thoughts yeah absolutely slot Miami into your third or fourth seed as winning the ACC now keep in mind they don't play Clemson this year in the regular season so they do have to play Florida State but when you look at the Havoc numbers of the 11 remaining opponents nobody out there is going to be on top of Cam Ward and force him to do the things that we saw at Incarnate Word and at Washington State I think Miami has got a pass all the way to the ACC Championship Game whether Clemson can show up there and generate some Havoc I don't even know what that defense is going to be capable of at the end of the year if things keep going this way I think another team that really made a huge statement this weekend I know we talked about Notre Dame and Texas A&M from the agie side of it but we said that the Irish have three games this year that they have to win and that was Texas A&M Florida State and USC Florida state is now a non-factor that is a game I project the Irish to be favored by 13 points over the seminal and at the end of the year we'll see maybe USC and Notre Dame are playing a game to get into the playoff that's something where I see Notre Dame as a two-point favorite on the road in in the colum so I I think Notre Dam did themselves a tremendous favor and now the world has woken up to find out that USC actually can play a little bit of Defense so big weekend for Notre Dame in general because of their future schedule yeah I think another big winner obviously Miami from the ACC was the big winner but of their early week like of their early season Clemson I think despite getting blown out was a net positive winner in the ACC and it's because of all the other teams right one of their hardest games on their schedule number one they avoid Miami Miami looked great as you mentioned Clemson avoids Miami one of the hardest games on Clemson schedule besides the one that they lost and look the market was already assuming that they were going to lose to Georgia they were you know double- digit underdogs but they go to Florida State that's one of the hard and Florida State looks like a corpse so you know I the path for Clemson potentially getting to Miami in the ACC Championship I think got easier the question is can Kate kumnick find his offense there's there's there's definitely some of these teams that are in the mix but maybe on the outside looking in major quarterback questions after some shoddy performances in week one Johnny any thoughts on the college football playoff race any teams you want to mention if you want to talk Miami or wherever you want to go with it yeah I think obviously Miami is obviously you know one of the teams right now that looked really really good coming out I mean you play an interstate rival in Florida you come out and you do that to him I think it all starts with a quarterback play and cam Ward know that guy is playing like he's played a lot of football you know he is playing like a guy um who's seeing things very slowly getting the ball out of his hand very very quickly and being super super efficient and you see on some of these runs where he's kind of just like getting what he needs to get and then kind of almost like he's walking out of bounds a little bit you know this guy um has a lot of experience obviously I think a completely re vamped um Team around them a little bit that's put them in a great position like you said obviously my favorite um to come in here and win the ACC as well and um you know after a slow start for the ACC week one you know I don't see how anybody's going to be able to to really slow them down uh but the guy's playing absolutely lights out right now after week one we'll see obviously have high hopes and and faith and I think that he will be able to keep up this play throughout the season yeah the the other thing I didn't mention in the ACC is VCH too VCH who you know had a good run at the end of last year but they didn't really beat anyone then they lose at Vandy and they were one of everyone's favorite sleepers NC State we'll see how they look against Tennesse but it's not like they wowed the world against Western Carolina in the opener so the ACC as a whole just maybe BC maybe BC will be there against Miami uh Old School Big East Vibes uh maybe Ed re will come out and kick off CIS to seal the game stop what you're doing right now and subscribe to the newest college sports Sports YouTube channel college football is around the corner and the new bboc channel is your destination for betting on college sports interviews with former College athletes and other topics such as college football 25 subscribe now and get in on the action all right so let's ship to the Heisman Trophy discussion there's been some movement in the market after last weekend we just talked about cam Warden I agree Johnny looked like he was playing fast but in slow motion just looked like he was so osed and comfortable out there and I mean it didn't hurt that Florida couldn't really generate pressure off of The Edge but he's going to be playing in front of a really good offensive line all season long as a result of all the movement this weekend there's just a cluster of quarterbacks at the top of the market Dylan Gabriel who you know underwhelming organ performance but he put up numbers and threw it nearly 50 times Jackson Dart for Miss who's going to put up numbers all year cam W do I mention Carson Beck jayen milro qu ERS Nico from Tennessee I'm curious to see how he performs against a pretty complicated Tony Gibson defense at NC State this week you know will Howard Miller Moss so you know then you have Travis Hunter who obviously has the unique distinction of playing on both sides of the ball can Colorado win enough games is the question if I had a sprinkle on someone it might be Drew R uh he's come down a little bit but but he looked great and that was the first game in Andy cot Nikki's offense he looked like he had a great grasp of it now I don't know if he's going to have the overall numbers as far as you know rushing and just you know number of touchdowns but he was super efficient in week one got an easy schedule coming up where you can just put up some numbers and get more on the radar and Penn State looked like they could be a really good team and that a lot of times plays into it there are exceptions where you don't need to be like in the college ball out mix Johnny you know about that uh Lamar Jackson also comes to mind there D Jam Daniels who just won it but dreel art he's he's intriguing to me Johnny any thoughts on the Heisman race as a former Heisman Trophy winner and who would be your favorite as of right now yeah I think right now obviously um you know I really like the way cam Ward played this week I know we've spoke on him a lot already so far you know I think he's got off to a good start another guy who I would really keep an eye on throughout the early part of the season you know you come out in the first game you throw for 445 yards is Jackson Dart from Old Miss I think anybody who's playing in a lane Kipping system has a great um opportunity who's going to go out and sling the ball a lot every single week and put up big numbers you know as we know with Lane kein the guy um is a little bit of a wizard when it comes to the pass game we've seen him from Alabama in the past what he's been doing as a head coach on his own but I think anytime you have a quarterback that's in his system um you're going to be able to go put up numbers and I think you know a great week one one start for Jackson Dart to be able to you know boost his odds a little bit um and put himself in a good position if he can keep this up throughout the season which you know it wouldn't surprise me if he did yeah cam Ward also will have Jackson D can get you some too but cam ward has potential to the upside of the rushing yards and the rushing touchdowns right which to pad those stats and just to make it even a more complete season KH any thoughts on the updated Heisman race yeah Dre you mentioned him already I think we waited eight games last year before the Penn State offense allowed him to throw over 20 yards three touchdowns no interceptions and now they're doing it as times running down in the first half right right they he completed two passes over 20 yards one for a touchdown the codal Nikki Playbook has been absorbed he is executing and I expect it to get better and better and remember this pen State schedule outside of two games it's pretty soft so I think that is a number at 28 to one that definitely can rise yeah I think Drew Aller definitely is the mix and you could see his odds rise up with a a pretty soft schedule coming up starting with Bowling Green where you could put up some numbers this weekend and finally I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the game on Sunday night between LSU and UFC one of the best games of the weekend just as far as competitiveness and the quality of play both quarterbacks looked really good both both defense also looked improved from last year but Miller Moss the his accuracy was on point Garrett nus Meer also had full control of that offense I think both of those quarterbacks showed well now can nus me's not going to have the rushing yards that Daniels did they've already lost the game they got to go through the SEC Gauntlet the defense has improved but probably still an area of weakness I'm not sure if they can win enough games Miller Moss is intriguing he's also not going to have the rushing yards but us has such a tough schedule John did you get a chance to watch either of those quarterbacks and do you have any thoughts there I got to watch a little bit of it I think Miller Moss obviously has been waiting in kind of Biden his time to get a chance to be the guy and then you get a chance to come out pretty much a Prime Time game on the first week of the season and go make you know a substantial amount of plays when it came down to it when it came down to crunch time um that his team needed him to make so I mean as that I don't think you can walk out of that stadium and have any more confidence leaving um than the Miller Moss did the other night yep K any thoughts on Moss or nus or that just that game in general well we were on Moss for like you know potential Heisman winners preseason and he lived up to that here and I know his average depth of Target was only 7.1 yards you'd like that to be a little bit longer but what we don't see that's in the Box SC is that he had five Big Time throws and zero turnover worthy plays he does not make a mistake he runs that offense like a general and USC is gonna completely exceed their expectations for mods makers which was six and a half wins on the season yeah that dot that he dropped in the on the free play I think he went five of five on passes 20 plus yards down the field but that was an unbelievable throw he had some tight window throws that were super impressive NFL level accuracy from Miller Moss so usfc definitely a much more intriguing team that many might have thought coming into the season because it looks like moss is going to be a player and he carried over that performance from the bowl last year against Louisville and the Hope was the defense would be better under a new regime you know bring in some transfers in the back end and that looked to be the case so USC is definitely an intriguing player in the new Big 10 so sounds weird to say that out loud also Colorado has a couple of guys in the Heisman mix in Travis Hunter and chador Sanders already mentioned that you know Travis Hunter has the benefit of playing on both sides of the ball which you know he's pretty much the only one who can say that in college football and then you have shador Sanders who he's just going to put up crazy numbers now he's not much of a runner and you know but they don't have a running game and it's just going to be him dropping back they're going to go empty Personnel so he's going to put up the numbers this year I just don't know if Colorado can win enough games the defense is still an issue there's no Run game the offensive line I think is still an issue but him and Travis Hunter are going to put up numbers I'm just not sure at their current prices I can get to backing either because I don't think Colorado is going to win enough games but they're gonna certainly put up video game numbers Johnny any thoughts on either yeah I think the one thing they do have is they're going to have the uh you know ability to be seen every single week and if I'm shadur Sanders I'm getting the ball to Travis Hunter every single week you know obviously in the Heisman race it's kind of knocking them off a little bit at each other um but I think you know for Colorado to be good this year it's going to have to run through those two guys and they're going to need to do something extremely special I mean anytime you're throwing five yard hitch routes and Travis Hunter is able to take that to the house you know as a quarterback sitting there you have to feel really good about having a guy like that you know obviously as you mentioned you know them not being able to run the ball is going to put more pressure on shador but if he can come out and continue to make plays week in and week out you know who says this guy can't throw for 4,500 plus yards throw for a lot of yards in this offense I think that's shor's best chance is to to obviously feed Travis Hunter and you know they're going to need him and rely on him a lot so um you know it's a lot of pressure but if you live up to it I think he give himself a realistic chance um we'll just see if their defense can hold up obviously you're going to need to be able to stay in some of these games and they were in a dog fight in week one yep yeah and you you definitely know what it's like to have a a reliable security blanket in Mike Evans playing with him yeah absolutely and I think you know Travis is is as special of a player as we've seen um not only playing both sides of the ball but just from a receiver position I mean this guy is making catches and his speed and quickness and getting in and out of out of these breaks is something that um it really jumps off the tape and jumps off the page every single week you watch him play yeah how good how good was Mike Evans by the way in college Mike Mike Evans was was a guy who you know his first year getting there was still learning a lot about football and what it was he was very much a basketball player and as he progressed through every spring through every fall this guy turned into be an absolute monster and legitimately you know could throw a screen out there that's a zero yard pass that he just stiff arms somebody into the dirt and has a you know a 44 speed to be able to get away from that so you know really one of those I feel like you know generational College football guys and somebody I was very lucky to be able to get share the field with yeah probably future Hall of Famer uh just Mr consistency in the NFL so he when you first when he first came to C he was completely raw and inexperienced yeah I think you know me and him coming in we got a chance to to Really mold a lot of our game going through scout team so you know he was he had only played a couple years of football coming in Texas A&M and um we kind of recruited him away from going to play basketball somewhere and um as he got in I think his size in his build and what he was as a physical you know Talent was very much there but still there's so much more to that to Route running and and playing the receiver position and I think really you know throughout our red shirt year we got to see a small glimpse of what um me and him would go on to do on and when we got a chance to play on Saturdays but very much a raw product and one that you know EX selled and and you know got better over those first two years exponentially no obviously put time into his craft Colin Johnny mentioned that there is a cannibalization effect here with Sanders and Hunter but are you on the same page you just don't think that Colorado can win enough games here for them to be in the mix especially at this price I feel like I'm watching the sequel to a movie I just don't know if this is The Empire Strikes Back or if this is Jaws to because what I see out of the box score is 12 defensive pressures by that off offensive line from Colorado shadur and Travis Hunter probably the best players in college football the most skilled they're going to deserve their NFL draft grades they're going to deserve their NFL positions but we saw this movie before where that offensive line can't protect shador there could be an injury coming somebody's gonna get a pop on him some defense is going to get out of control pissed off with who they are and take a cheap shot whatever but they cannot protect shador and that affects Travis Hunter as well so really Dion really need to do more at the offensive line because 12 pressures against an FCS team and I don't care that it's north Daka State 12 pressures is unacceptable from your offensive line yeah and the schedule doesn't get much easier starting with a road trip to Nebraska and uh but the one thing you might have working in your favor is old Dion he might be out to get chador that uh that Heisman taking shots down the field uh instead of taking knees late trying to get uh maybe 500 yards passing an extra touchdown in there for the stat sheet uh all right that'll do it for us thanks to Colin and Johnny for joining me thanks all of you for tuning in make
