a lot of work today to get done we'll have mock game tomorrow and then we're on the road to Denver looking forward to playing uh a lot of competition still um out there for spots and they know that and they're working hard ready to go what do you got coach thank you done that's it when do you want to make the choice on on quarterback in terms of who you're back you serious go ahead I said when do you want to make the the choice on backup quarterback is it uh when we need to when we need to is uh caring three guys on the 53 quarterback a possibility or considering all possibilities on a table figure out best uh best 53 that it fits for us is there a upside to caring three versus two or two versus three h it's just you know that fits into all the different positions obviously there's been some reports about Darius Robinson is there any update on on his health yeah um reports that came out that happened in the closed portion of practice so I'm not real fired up about that guys the guys that were there um that didn't report on it thank you to adhering to our policy uh he's getting image in today he's got a calf a calf you okay what are your initial hearings about I mean is it gotta get the reports today how would you describe zay's football IQ who Z Jones Awesome uh there's a reason he's played at a high level um on a couple different teams in some different offenses he's he's uh picks things up really quick he understands the nuances of what needs to get done from the receiver position can play all three he's been fantastic he's high high football IQ how how can that help the younger guys in the room they see what it takes there's a reason he's in that long you know um so and then he's he helps those guys with hey like here's here's his way of how I learn all three positions you know what I mean and get what I need to get done so he's he's a he was a huge asset for us we were joking with Trey a little bit about being in the older guy in the tight end room cuz it's such a young group as young as he is can you can you still be kind of a leader when you're absolutely absolutely I mean leadership is any influence that you provide so he provides positive influence way he practices the way he prepares the questions he asks what he does in the weight room what he does outside of the building um those guys look to him to see how he operates on a day-to-day basis he's he's you know doing well mention earlier this week that the sense of urgency is up for the guys that are trying to crack that 53 man roster knowing that Sunday's game is kind of the last chance that they really do have is there an added level of pressure on the staff when it comes to rotating the proper pieces to get in no we had I mean like when we set up the plan week to week to week and and you take it in totality of training camp with practices joint practices three games um the plan how we kind of set it up I think we're right where we need to be um the players understood kind of what we're doing and and some roles changed how much reps how many reps guys got throughout the games but uh they'll all get an opportunity before Tuesday with the cuts I mean you obviously have experience before being a head coach of you know figuring out what pieces fit I'm curious going into your second year with same coaching staff same scheme do you feel like you are approaching it differently or have different Insight of maybe okay you know this year last year I only had this many of this position I feel like I can justify having more here you know what I mean yeah I think um there's kind of a template that you use but you know man and myself we're trying to keep the best 53 as it as it um relates to our team this year um and then the practice squad goes into that so you kind of balance all those variables but you know if if guys deserve to be on the team they'll be on the team is there a challenge when it comes to making sure the the right people get enough reps Sunday during a game live game situation or is it scripted out enough and your guys' minds as a whole you you know you're going to get those guys reps they more of that Bob you know now there's always in a game there's some unknown you know unknowns um but we feel good about the plan that we have set forth to be able to develop evaluate and keep healthy you know what I mean so that that really doesn't change going into the preseason 3 and like I said there's you it'll catch your guys's eye a little bit differently this game um because of what the first two entailed might not look exactly like that to get guys make sure get guys get opportunities beyond the starting offensive line how fluid how competitive is the rest of that room right now very very is the plan to play uh tuned for a half and right around there yeah we'll see how it goes but um that's what we've been doing but that's it's just because that's kind of how the flow of the game worked out uh so it could be a little more a little less what more do you need to see out of the coach guy to kind of help you make just want to see consistency of doing what their coach to do and making plays when it comes to Sunday how much are you guys going to weigh that performance against the rest of the body of work the prayer yeah I mean I think you know the the body of work matters everything that went into that but the number one evaluation tool for me is preseason games you know and then probably go to Joint practices and then practice you know um not there there's a huge scale of different weights of that but it's you said it Donnie it's total body of work but games matter you said Monday that this week was time to put the screws to it for the guys um it was a very important week and the game is that much more important too were you able to notice elevation everyone um we we all when when I tell those guys to go they go so I I mean I wouldn't say it was any more spirited you know these last two days than it has been I think just like in my mind it's like uh you know everyone jokes uh you know you go through an NFL season and it's like you get to weed 16 and it's like oh my God this game's really important it's no more important than the first game they all I think they all count the same right so it's like but what is going on is is you see kind of the end of the road you know what how that fects that particular game how it affects the end of the RO but week one did too so I think the same thing to be said with Camp every day mattered the ex you know basically the same it's just now you're closer to all right I got two day they got today tomorrow and Sunday and then there's Cuts so they're kind of at the end of the road here um so is that more important than July 28th no not in my opinion but because of what's about to come they might think like that but um that's what that's a long dissertation on everyday matters uh roster Talent can change from year to year you've done this over a number of rosters or number of years in terms of getting to a cut down for coaches and and that process is it always about the same amount of work are there times when the talent or maybe a lack of talent makes it easier or harder to make these Final Call do you find yourself always dealing with the same cont I think there's a lot of work to be done trying trying to do what's best for the football team as a decision maker so there's probably you know it's probably the same amount of work honestly Darren you know we were doing some projects yesterday night like you got to put time on task you know to make sure you're right said yesterday that he's scouted out or looked at uh through week eight this year I know you guys like to tell us you don't look ahead but he does he does right how far do you look ahead I don't like during the offseason you just prepared for I do I I my rul is a little different than his but um when I was in his chair it was similar um he's a little more of a data guy than I am so he likes a lot of data but everyone does it a little bit different Drew probably did the same thing but got to where he needed to get to in his mind before we started a different way than Nick you know what I mean so no right way or wrong way to do it um it's kind of by preference and what you want to do but um no I didn't game plan the first eight weeks for the defense you know what I mean that not what I spent my time on what's that like for you now in the head coaching role like not having to do all that other uh you you got to do a lot of other stuff that consumes time though too which thank God I get to do that you know but uh I mean any role that you have this is how I've been any role that you have and the work that you have to put in to be really good at it you it's not work how's a guy like Tonga come along say it again how do a guy like Tonga come along awesome awesome he's doing a really good job um you know the Run game what he does in the Run game the skill set that he brings and the pass game too like he's he can push the pocket pretty good uh he's played well he plays with a high motor he's violent he was a really good addition for us what have you seen out Elijah Jones so far what how do you assess I think he's taken a step you know his last last couple weeks you know he's playing faster um technique is is coming along um I think he start to cut it Loose a little bit so that tells me he's probably not thinking as much or feels better about what he's doing um some of the in intricate details of playing DB uh I think he's starting iron that out he's doing well with all the discussions going towards Tuesday how much does the practice squad take be taken into account especially because of the flexibility Elations hug huge yeah huge Howard I mean I know we've talked about it it's it's uh those are very meaningful spots um for all kinds of reasons but our practice squad guys I don't see those guys as never going to get a jersey on game day kind of you know they they got to be ready to play at a moment's notice so um those are important spots
