'I'm in love with Charles', Papaya Rules, Antonelli's arrival & breaking F1 News | Monza debrief

we cannot end the podcast what what is you talking about what's happened did you like some breaking Formula 1 news just as I went to close the window it popped back onto my social feeds and showed me the news what what hello and welcome to the Fast and the Curious with me bie Glover Christian hugill and Greg James as always we do a debrief podcast after the grown Prix usually on a Sunday and we have got one hell of a race to talk about we're going to discuss how Ferrari did that we're also going to talk about McLaren because let's be honest we've got a lot to get into there and we're going to talk about new boy on the Block Kimmy Antonelli but Ferrari pulled it off that was a brilliant Drive how did they do that Christian oh goodness knows absolutely goodness knows how did it happen well you knew you knew you knew something now I don't know whether this was a wild stab in the dark or because you are Christian hugill um padic princess um keeper of all F1 knowledge and you knew a little bit of inside information but you mentioned this on the last podcast you said I go for Charlotte Clair win home win for Ferrari IM Monza um and and it happened I slightly pulled that out of thin air but with a bit of logic to it so I thought if you cast your mind back to last year Ferrari bought big upgrades and really went for it and there was that classic signs V Clair battle and I thought it's closer this year so if Ferrari brings some upgrades which I think they will this year they could win this Grand Prix so I thought there was a good chance of a Ferrari win hence I went for lir I also know he's done it before in Monza that was their logic behind my prediction but I didn't in any way think they would win it in those circumstances with what happened to McLaren with the pit stop I could that I was nowhere near predicting a phenomenal Grand Prix absolutely thrilling the sports at its best and there are so many stories from it which Betty I suspect we'll get into right now yeah we're going to get into it my favorite bit is when charl Clair won he was going Mama Mia Mama Mia like you couldn't get any more Italian could you like classic I I mean I love the race but I think my favorite bit is when you see Nico rosberg because he's clearly quite mad yeah in the best possible way yeah yeah he interviews as he drove a little bit unhinged and right right up to the line he asks the awkward question and that's you don't see that enough in sport that you don't see someone going uh what about the overtake um from Oscar feel a bit bad about that so look we we we need to talk about McLaren but you can't talk about McLaren without ferari and and Ferrari without McLaren because the reason Ferrari won is because McLaren didn't have a great race so where do you want to start with this Christian what how did Ferrari managed to put that together the one thing I always want to say is we record this podcast purposefully straight after the checkered flag so I'm going off my initial gut reaction it looked to me that whilst in the early part of this race um Carlos and shl were able to look after their tires they had quite an a sort of quiet stint one to this race well of course we knew that Oscar and Lando were battling and then there was all this talk of papaya rules which we then found out means you can race each other without taking each other off the track basically you two very much enjoyed that that code name didn't you well I don't know if I enjoyed it it's a bit weird yeah I'm I'm with Betty I don't know if I enjoy it yeah I I just feel like it was a strange time to launch it feel like it's been hard launched I've never heard that before have you heard that before no I've never heard it before but no they've hard launched it in monzo and suddenly they've just gone like said that thing like we all should know what that means I suspect what's happened is post the Hungary race it's like well we we've now gone away we've sat down we've got clear parameters on what we can do and you are allowed to race each other McLaren are a team where we're going to allow our drivers to race like Ferrari did in Monza last year with certain parameters and that's why Oscar felt he could dive up the inside of Lando into um the second chicane on the opening lap but it looked to me like in doing that and then obviously them them saying papaya rules and both of them speeding up to try and race each other it looked to me like they took too much out of their tires whereas charlot Clair was able to have a quiet first in really nurse his tires he drove mly we George Russell was called the tire Whisperer earlier in the um season when he won that race and then was disqualified from it that was charl Clair you know good Lord the the tire Whisperer Mark two he was phenomenal so he was able to look after his tires better and they pulled off a One Stop Carlos was fourth with it but sha made it win the race for him and that is stunning so yes it looked to me like he was able to look after his tires and that's what won him the race I feel like maybe oh no go on I'm sorry bety can I just can I add a tie thing maybe sh it should be now called the ti Seducer or the ti caresser cuz he he looks like the sort of guy that would really look after you while he's making love to you I didn't expect you to say that blood I didn't expect my brain to say that but I wanted to say it and it came out of my mouth and I stand by it I'm glad you said it I think he' be a really I think sh would be really really tender lovely generous lover I think afterwards he would go and like get you a cup of tea in bed and like get you a snack like he would I think I'm wrong Christian you're laughing but I don't think I'm wrong and he looks after those tires like he looks after a woman I don't think you're wrong gu there oh my God Greg I think I'm in love with charlot Clair um I think you are in love with Charlotte Clair I think he's a new big fan you're not the only one what was your what was your um very astute journalistic Point going to be before I took this down a smut Avenue i' my brain's gone now I've forgotten the point I was going to make Greg because you've shocked me I genuinely can't remember because um but interesting about Charlotte Clair and being a nice lover I think he would be can I can I raise an interesting journalistic point that please I'm just scrolling back to the group chat uh that the fast and curious group chats going through the race I can't find where exactly I post it but it was in that first stint where I said don't rule out Ferrari here I just like the way they were able to look after the tires and I also posted on Twitter the timing screen showing how close the top six was if you're in an early part of the race when everyone's battling but you're not battling and you can look after your tires when you're in a tight top six you're putting yourself in a real good position for later on in the race so actually I saw this coming from fairly early on so I've got a question and I might be over complicating this so if I am I apologize but do you think it all sort of goes down to like that first lap should Oscar have gone for it because if he hadn't have gone for it then maybe McLaren would have had to have pushed too hard and they obviously let um Charlie Clair in during that point well the fact it wasn't that first lap but it was that first stint because as I said earlier there was that moment on team radio where it was like papaya rules and the two of them upped their speed papaya rules man [Music] but were they doing that because of that first lap do you know what I mean is ises it all go back to that that initial Oscar move no it doesn't it goes back to that first stint it's too simple to draw it back to that first lap but it is the first stint and the culture of you can race now there are two schools of thought with this you could think what McLaren should have done is said pre-race whoever whoever is leading after turn one you are our person we are going to look after you we want to bring it home one two especially if that's Lando because unfortunately Oscar sorry old boy he's got the title advantage and that would have been Lando that clearly wasn't the case it was with with the papaya rules it was within the laws of Engagement because Lando was passed by Oscar on La one now this is not Oscar pastry's fault Oscar is getting all sorts of stick on social media I suspect from the Lando Norris super fans you know the ones they're a little bit too obsessed with Lando Norris it's a bit creepy like Greg is with Charli Clair he definitely runs a little burner account doesn't he oh to be those mediums being loved and looked after I shall look after me like you look after your medium tires that could be a Valentine's Day card couldn't it it should it really should be someone from the toot will make that they definitely will we should make a fast and curious one oh that should be on our t-shirt that should be our fast and curious t-shirt paint me like one of your medium tires but um you know they didn't do that McLaren have made this decision you guys can race and Oscar did race and Oscar is one of the greatest racing drivers in the world he is competitive he's not there to look after Lando Norris unless he is told by his team you're there to look after Lando Norris in which case I firmly believe Oscar W he's told you can battle and Lando left the door open he could have done something because I tell you what Max fappen and Lewis Hamilton are not being overtaken by their teammates in that position battling for a world championship on lap one they're just not so it's it this is where Lando if he's going to take that step up and win a championship you have to remove the possibilities you have to put the look on your side don't allow yourself to be overtaken grip the race by the Scruff of its neck and make sure nothing can happen don't get overtaken by your teammate be better because you're going for a world championship should McLaren as a team be like look we need to prioritize Lando winning these races so that gives him and us a good chance of winning a driver's Championship the answer to your question Betty really simply in my view yes but what McLaren are doing is they are saying this year we are prioritizing the constructors so long as we come one two we don't care which order it is we're going for the constructors if I was McLaren I'd be saying I actually think Lando's got a chance of over hauling this points all here and I'd be saying very clearly Oscar next year all bets are off from next year in Australia you two are 5050 neck and neck but this year because Lando has the points Advantage this year we are prioritizing him because we think there might be a chance of winning the driver's Championship now that's not to say that you'd be going to Oscar piastra you're not allowed to overtake Lando on lap one because that's ridiculous but maybe it's turn one maybe it's to say listen turn one you two go for it of course you've got to go for it your racing drivers but as L if whoever leads out the two of you into turn one then we're back in that person other teams have done that in the past McLaren are choosing not to I think it's the wrong thing because I think for example I think they should have swapped around Lando and Oscar to P2 P3 doesn't matter these two are going to win so many races in their career is on the checkered flag I'd have said Oscar let Lando passed for the championship that's how ruthless teams win World Championships and overcome Point Halls yeah that's what Red Bull would do I reckon and just to say Christian this is you're on a great role here so I don't want to interrupt too much but Randy we're not just speculating Randy seeing the the racing director R McLaren on the last podcast said they are prioritizing that Constructor Championship over the two the two Lads winning and I've heard from other people in the team that is the message coming out the team wow it's got so many people talking on Instagram literally everyone's talking about it uh W Farm say let Lando win Hungary switch positions over the line today Lando is significantly closer to Max point just yeah exactly yeah yeah Toby says I think Oscar deserve to be in front and it's only fair to race on lap one Shane the strategy through the onew uh Tom said if this was Red Bull Perez would have let Max through no questions asked uh noris should have been let through in my opinion agreed agreed agreed Alexandre said no I love oscar but Lando should be getting as much help towards the drivers as possible uh someone called Dudley said at the end of the race at the end of the day is a Race So fastest driver should always win but it's got oh it's so interesting it's so that must be so hard to manage what do you think bro well that's an interesting point isn't it the fastest driver should win well it's a team sport like who is the fastest yes obiously that does come into it but that's what I've learned I guess in the last couple of SE Seasons that I've been laser focused on it is that it's not just enough to be the quickest or the best driver there's so many other variables and that's what that's what we're getting at isn't it Christian really that you you have to take in to account all of these variables and all these things and that's why it's easy for me to sit here and say McLaren should have done this it's incredibly difficult uh and the people who are making this decision on real life and not spouting nonsense on a podcast like me have got to make these decisions and it's really really really tricky so I've got every sympathy for them it does also have to come that the responsibility is not all on McLaren it's not all on the pit wall the team principal some of that responsibility is on the driver and and credit to Lando he said it in that interview with niiko rosberg at the end of the race credit to osar he overtook me so obviously he caught me by surprise he got past and he deserved it didn't he yeah he nailed his start today excellent turn one nailed his start that's been his weakness recently but I felt as my gut instinct said to me as soon as I saw that move I don't think Lando's expecting that I think he's thinking right lovely start done wonderful the start that was the weakness and I think Oscar's gone you're not expecting this mate are you and and I think you've got to be a bit more switched on so I think land has to take some of the responsibility too it's not all on McLaren let's leave on a positive though with McLaren in that they are taking chunks out of the Red Bull and Max fappen lead so where are we Christian with that with the league table cuz let's let's let's break it down with numbers cuz that's it's not it's not insignificant though is it it's a really really good points Greg that we should leave on a positive with McLaren they have made bigger strides than we possibly expected this year as for the constructors so McLaren and Al on 438 points red ball are on 446 I've said before I think McLaren are the favorites I don't think it's cut and dry I don't think you know it could well be that Red Bull bring an upgrade um I was going to mention this later but why not mention it now Sergio Perez was better I took some stick on another podcast for saying this last weekend Sergio was better in zambor he just was he was closer to Max and again this weekend he was better he was closer to Max and Sergio pretty much got everything you're GNA get out of that car I don't think a Yuki SoDo a Daniel lucardo and Liam Lawson are doing any better than czecho did this weekend so it's not cut and dry but yeah 4 38 to 436 in the constructors the drivers is still a sizable Gap Max Fen has 303 points and seven wins Lando Nores has 241 points and seven and two wins I should say and bear in mind if the two drivers end tied on points at the end of the season it will go back to how many wins in which case Max fappen will probably end the season with more wins than Lando Norris so that is significant as well so yeah 241 to 303 it's still in it though still massively in it McLaren and and I do and I do think Lando's massively in it which is why Greg I'd be handling it differently I'd be saying second and third place swap round guys I would have in Hungary you know I just would have done so yeah silver lining for Lando though is that he picked up that extra point for the fastest lap so at least he's got that in his back pocket yes absolutely and before we move on for this because better your original question was how did Ferrari win it again you you have to you don't win Formula 1 grand pris or rarely do you win Formula 1 grand pris purely because of cock-ups of another team Ferrari won that race today because they deserve to charl laclair drove the best Grand Prix of his career in my opinion he knew when to push he knew when to ease off he looked after the tires he didn't make a mistake in the final few Laps on Old Tires Sensational and this is a team that previously every single time they got in good positions would find some way it was truly impressive the way they always found a way of cocking it up not anymore shall we have a little trip into Christian's cubby Hall oh why not oh look and who's sitting in the cubby hall waiting to be talked about it's Kimmy Antonelli you're making me want to run away from this cubby hole we'll talk about anelli in a minute but for those new to the podcast every week I tend to highlight some of the bits you might have missed um and often that's one bit this week I'm actually doing um a couple of different bits the first is a huge well done and credit to my flatmate Chris this should be Chris's cubby hole because this had gone into the under the radar until my flatmate pointed it out to me actually excellent debut from Franco kapino while other drivers were tripping over each other today getting involved in incidents getting time penalties Franco colapinto came 12th Logan Sergeant only managed 11th once this season and prior to that I don't believe it'd even have a 12th or a 13th I'm double- cheing myself no wow Logan hadn't even come 12th or 13th this season or 14th had managed one 11th and other than that had finished a maximum of 15th so Franco kapino who had believe had only driven seven or eight laps in a Formula One car before this weekend Sensational debut 12 very solid that's a great point that is a great point so credit to Chris for that and my little um moment of um my little cubby hole moment is again Williams based is Alex albon the plaudits have all gone to Ferrari for running the one stop so did Williams with albon and those two points for Williams that Alex Alban's got with ninth have come not only through Alex albon being brilliant but also a brilliant strategy call to go onto the One Stop um and get themselves into the points through that there were plenty of other people who tried it down there but none of them made it work into uh points pay positions Ricardo also tried it had a messy race with penalties Aon tried it Alpine didn't have the pace so a very very good weekend I think for Williams and very impressive for colapinto bearing in mind there is still one more um seat available on the grid for next season at saber could Williams lend their Academy driver to S but who knows it's possible let's talk about Kimmy Antonelli then because I went on an absolute Kimmy Antonelli roller coaster the other day during fp1 so he he was fastest everyone was like oh my God he's the fastest this is amazing and then he went and crashed within the first 10 minutes how do we reflect on on his start I think we've we've missed the top line here well yeah sorry he is the driver replacing Lewis Hamilton that we he we've all thought it's been the case I've been saying on the podcast for months it'll happen I also said I think it'll happen at the Italian Grand Prix cuz Kimmy's Italian and it happened so that something we should talk about Greg Betty excited to see a young 18y old in that seat next year it's incredibly exciting great to have a new person in it it it mixes up the Gan pool doesn't it keeps it interesting and also for newcomers to the sport next season it's nice to you can pin your colors to that wagon and go I I started watching it when he started and it's always nice to have new Heroes potentially on the grid so that's a really nice thing also we did we spotted a a [ __ ] in Bradley la armor I think when he was talking about who the new driver was going to be and we all went he's talking a lot about coming up from Formula 2 to Formula 1 it feels like it's goingon to be Kimmy Antonelli and it feels like an exciting choice I think yeah why not pick pick a newbie and he's 18 years old I love that as well and also did you see the Mercedes social media where basically George was like showing him the ropes about how you talking to the camera and what you should say and how to introduce yourself to all of the Mercedes fans that made me feel really old George Russell was the first Formula 1 driver I ever interviewed before he was a Formula 1 driver it was before his first race back in 2019 and then I've always thought of like oh the young ones like George Russell and now all of a sudden George Russell stood there with this other new kid in the selfie with him and Antonelli looks about four and George Russell looks like one of the old ones and it's like oh my God even the ones I consider the young ones and now not the young ones anymore let alone Fern God knows how Paul Fernando must feel so um yeah I did see that and it made me feel quite should I answer your question sorry Betty I derailed us um can I have a Greg James unpopular opinion on Kimmy Antonelli putting it in the Wall come and give us your unpopular opinion something up till now that you've been scared to say I think Kimmy Antonelli sticking it in the wall is actually kind of brilliant why I think coming in on your debut fp1 session in your home Grand Prix and not playing it safe and going out going fastest then sticking it in the wall getting out and dropping the keys and going I found the limit bye-bye now I actually think it's so rockstar I think it's so cool and I just think actually I'm I may sound like I'm making a lighthearted Point here but I'm not that ability to go and push the limit that confidence is quite incredible and yes he went over the limit and he stuck it in the wall but everyone does that that happens I I just sort of think and this is a mad thing to say I think him crashing sort of shows you why they think he's so special well definitely definitely Fearless Greg that's it yes yeah it's it's a much better story than yep nice man drove well it's like nice talented young man drove so well he crashed yeah I sort of think we'll look back on that and think yeah we saw he wasn't like the rest there didn't we I don't actually think it's a too bad thing and he'll get plenty opportunities and I don't think that will be a I don't think it'll knock his confidence I think he'll play it slightly more careful next time but everybody you speak to says this kid special so let's find out if this kid special it's another exciting part of 2025 my God next season looks exciting just really does hey Betty that question from Chris is good do you want to fire it at Christian yeah so on the point of there being loads of young drivers in F1 obviously Kimmy's just 18 years old but you've you've got olle bman Franco Oscar who Oscar's still so young I mean you always forget that don't you when he when he drives so well but Chrissy says have drivers always been so young sort of coming into Formula 1 is this a new thing where Talent is sort of being spotted a little bit earlier and drivers are moving up to Formula 1 quicker it's a really good question from Chrissy I remember Kimmy reenan making his debut in 2001 and he'd only got 23 car racers to his name and there was all all this talk then at the time of this is dangerous he's too inexperienced and he's too young and Kimmy obviously came in and aced it and sort of proved there's no such thing he sort of proved if you're talented enough you'll be fine and that did I think open the door to Formula 1 as an industry saying well if they're quick enough let's stick them in so back in 2009 haime algari made his debut age 19 years and 125 days that was beaten by Lando Norris he is the fourth youngest debut racing driver in F1 history at 19 years 124 days then bman 18 Lance stroll also 18 and the youngest F1 driver to make their debut in the 2015 Australian Grand Prix was Max for stappen Aged 17 years 166 days so it's sort of a last decade and a half thing I think where drivers have come in around aged 19 or 18 and in Max's case 17 so the answer to Chrissy's question is it's not that new I think it was actually Kimmy reren that moved the dial on this back in the early 2000s but it is great though that they are backing these young drivers and Mercedes we've talked about this quite a few times uh We've mentioned the they might have missed Max but they're not going to miss Kimmy so picking a driver young can pay off quite nicely sometimes I mean it has with Oscar and many other examples that we've just discussed 18 is Young though isn't it it is Young pressure that is on those shoulders and like also the thing that I that always shocks me about Formula 1 is not only you you Happ to go out there and drive a car really fast in a really competitive environment do what your team is saying listen to team orders fight also against your teammate all of that the sort of on the track stuff you've got to deal with all of the media that you have to do as a driver as well the circus around Formula 1 I just think 18 that's so young yeah and that's a really good point because the youngest today is Max fappen age 17 then we've obviously got stroll 18 and bman 18 there was hype around Max definitely there was hype around Max it was like oh Red Bull have got this gem it wasn't quite as intense as it's been around Kimmy and also I think coming into Mercedes and racing Lewis sorry and replacing Lewis Hamilton makes that slightly bigger still so I actually think even though as I've just said no it's not totally new we have seen drivers coming in he won't be the youngest ever person to race in Formula 1 and there's been two other 18y olds he's probably the most hyped and that will be interesting to see how he deals with that I suspect he'll be fine and I suspect this will be seen as a master stroke there's one more interesting thing on this as well there's there's no mention of Beyond 2025 and I still think Max for stappen is very much keeping his options open so are we in a situation next year where Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimmy Antonelli in a shootouts to see who joins Max for stappen in that team in 2026 I think that's a possibility and that leads to a fascinating thing I think Max could make the switch to Mercedes and I think Toto would sign Max and there there's big pressure on not just Kimmy Antonelli but also George Russell that is a very juicy place to end this episode of The Fast and the curist that is in the future which is exciting but for now we celebrate Ferrari we allow McLaren to lick their wounds slightly and we will be back in the week with an episode featuring Jack Duan an Aussie Aussie driver who uh from Alpine who we're very excited about and I'm excited to get to know him a bit more and find out what makes him tick so that's coming up and then week after that is going to be because it's a week off now isn't there going to be in Baku bless you um on the 15th of September so there'll be another another round of sneezing jokes and another race debrief as well Betty thank you thank you Greg Christian thank you Greg thank you and thank you all for listening you can follow us on Fast curious pod make sure you leave a nice review if you've listened to this podcast for ages do a little review why don't you come on give a little bit back for a change and tell an F1 fan friend about it people underestimate the power of spreading the word if you like this podcast don't presume that your friends who are into F1 know about it or even if your friend isn't into F1 good point it's not exclusive anyone can listen and we trust me I don't like to toot our own horn but we have got people interested in F1 just through this podcast I've been told it on many an occasion so maybe you could suggest it if they're thinking it's getting juicy this towards the end of the season there's a podcast that will guide you through it I'd also like to hear from more Ferrari fans if they also think that charlot Clair would be a very sensual lover goodbye thank you for listening oh God stop stop stop stop we cannot end the podcast what what do you talking about what's happened would you like some breaking Formula 1 news just as I went to close the window it popped back onto my social feeds and showed me the news what what Kevin Magnuson has been given two penalty points for a collision in the race oh that takes him to the required number of penalty points for One race man so he's missing the next race oh that's s he's now got 12 penalty points so we'll for his and this was for the uh incident with Pierre gazley and that means 12 penalty points mean you get a One race ban which will almost certainly be served in Baku and you know what that means ladies and gentlemen you know who the reserve driver is for H don't you Mr Oliver bman oh so I think we've got bman part two in Baku because bman is the reserve driver for H has have a relationship with Ferrari uh he's Reserve driver for both Ferrari and H so I think we're going to be don't know it could be someone else but he's driving for H next season so it'd be stupid to SP anyone else in bman in Baku bless you bman in Baku and with with that we will now end unless anyone else has been banned from driving for getting 12 points it's like like the real like real world this anyone else been banned we all good I've never had a penalty point in my license you know I've had a I've had a speed awareness course okay bye everyone bye
