The Penguin (2024) First Thoughts & Review! (The Batman / HBO / Colin Farrell)

Intro internet hello you lovelies and welcome to the penguin non-spoiler first thoughts I promise not a single spoiler going to be very careful even with context I just had to talk about this show and full disclosure I'm on vacation I'm about an hour from going to a wedding I actually need to change into my suit here in a minute so I will not be editing this video this is going to be a one take stream of Consciousness just thoughts on the Penguin and I'm kind of on vacation so it's going to be kind of a rapid fire thing tomorrow is my birthday wedding today a little busy so no edit full stream of Consciousness if you're new to this page this isn't usually how I do things but I thought it'd be a fun experiment let me know in the comments below if you thought this was fun you like this things press buttons leave a comment let me know things all right without further Ado I hate long intros let's talk about the penguin the penguin is General Thoughts astronomically good I've said it before I think the penguin was my most anticipated show of 2024 and now I think it's my most favorite uh unbelievable how does this exist this validates a lot of love for serialized content love of 2024 comic books are serialized comic books are the experience of week to week or month to month thinking about those characters and living in their world and I think that's part of the immersive nature of a comic book a comic is the space between the panels you're the director a comic book show should have that same feel of growing out a world of thinking about these characters of this water cooler conversation that comes from the format of TV and this is me reviewing a show that I've thought about so much that I couldn't not film a video on vacation that is the highest praise I can give a show and speaking of the highest praise The Acting / Colin Farrell the acting I knew would be Sensational the acting Colin Ferrell's performance in the Batman is I think one of the Great curveball this guy stole the show in an already incredible series of performances what that movie does with building out Gotham with building out the world of Batman is nothing short of miraculous in my opinion and Colin frell whenever he's on screen you are fascinated by his story his journey this show Dives right into that while also building out Gotham while also growing Gotham as a character the lore and the world and everything that feels like what this elor in DC Comics is and while we're on the asor concept I'm so glad that I'm not thinking about anything outside of Gotham in this show the amount I care about Gotham because of this show and because of Matt Reeves movie is so much so that I wouldn't want to imagine what it'd be like for Superman to land there or a guy with a green ring fly by or what thecar is up to this time of year I wouldn't want to personally have that as the back of my head because the real grounded gritty this could exist nature of Gotham is I feel like I could visit it there because of this show but I would never want to because of this show it feels like a real tangible place and that is thanks to it feeling so real that it doesn't quite fit into the greater DC Mythos and that's like a lot of good comic books and I think good Detective Comics good Batman comics good separate isolated stories also need to exist as much as you have a James gun Batman that feels like Superman could pop up at any moment that feels Larger than Life and that feels like you could have those more Fantastical Villains The Penguin is the most grounded villain possible Colin Highest Possible Penguin Praise Ferrell's performance here and this is where I'm I'm avoiding being hyperbolic and I do want to make it clear that I've never said this before Heath Ledger Joker I think is the greatest performance of all time and I think that Colin Ferrell's performance is the first role or performance or experience I've had watching something that I feel is even in the same category that's even in the same conversation it is that astronomically good they do some things to add some comic book elements to his performance in the show they do some things to add things that shouldn't work outside of the comic but absolutely do and in that same vein uh what they do Cristin Milioti with Christen milot I think that's how you pronounce her name I'm so sorry if I'm mispronouncing it she is incredible in Palm Springs she is so good in How I Met Your Mother and she is even better here she is so talented I cannot wait for this woman to be a household name she is able to do things with just her Soulful eyes with little micro expressions with glances there are so many moments of penguin and her leveraging each other's neurosis and their weaknesses and their strengths and knowing how to manipulate each other this is a show of fighting verbally this is a show that has plenty of action as well but the moments I love most are dialogue scenes where you're overpowering the other by knowing more about them by playing chess by looking ahead five steps by figuring out what your Leverage is this show is so good at being like Breaking Bad where it it puts itself in these spots and then it takes a left you'd never expect it's so much like your crime dramas your black teles your Sopranos all of those things where you're looking at someone Master what manipulation can be on a criminal scale that would make you some sort of um not not not Mafia Crime Boss but someone in the family that's outside of the family there's so much crime drama that is about what it means for your position to make a choice what it means on the CH chessboard and there's so many moving Parts you have to care about everyone and the show does such a good job making you care about everyone with this chess board now before we get into a couple minor minor spoilers I do want to say that renzy Feliz from The Runaways is absolutely a scene stealer he is so good in this he is in many ways your ey line and that's impressive because Oz Cobb is Rhenzy Feliz also your eyeline but there are things that I assume and I haven't seen the whole show hav't gotten to the end yet but I assume happen with Oswald that might make you dislike him some I I still think he's going to be a likable antagonist for the Batman 2 but I assume things he does that are awful and they really establish him as as um irredeemable but we haven't gotten there yet and I assume that's when we have reny fleas as our eyeline but that that is a a light uh contextual non-spoiler this is a light spoiler just because it blew my mind in a really fun way so if you want to end the video here I totally understand and that is totally fair I'm going to say a thing that blew my mind they basically make renzy Feliz MILD Spoiler/choice taken (not really but I didn’t know) penguin's Robin and that is such an inspired Choice instead of having him just as like a little Lackey they fully make him what it would be to have a criminal version of Batman and Robin what it would mean to have a ward what do would mean to have a number two what it means to have a sidekick and I have to say the fatherson relationship the proud paternal energy the I know what it's like to be in your position kid that comes out of Colin Ferrell's penguin is insanely captivating the scenes between the two of them are so powerful and special cuz it not only paints a deeper picture of penguin because you see all this his insecurities but you also see all of his strengths you see all of his I want to care I wish I had a figure like me in my childhood I wish I could have done this for someone else earlier I wish someone had done this for me earlier is the character but they do it through Renay having Robin's origin there is a literal Rim stealing scene and then at one point later in the season he's wearing like uh you know a deep red with a green backpack and it looks like the just a dash of Robin colors it is absolutely General Overall Thoughts inspired I love the relationship between the two of them I love the idea of making a Batman and Robin a penguin and a Lackey and turning into like an actual important character the show juggles so many things like that that's just one example so incredibly well the show juggles the marronis and the Falcone so incredibly well the show builds Gotham out there's a while we're still in light spoilers because of I've already said a things so I assume you've already left if you didn't want to hear anything there is a moment in um the third episode that makes Gotham's moment in the third Act of the Batman feels so grounded and real and terrifying and they really build out Gotham as a character in that third episode the whole season but especially that that opening of the third episode uh the first episode feels like an orchestra the second episode feels like jazz and the third episode feels like Gotham becoming a major theme throughout the song that is the Penguin and Matt Reeves the Batman and I adore this show um what an experience I loved it so very much I cannot wait for people to talk about it I try to be very vague in this but also extend my highest of Praise writing akin to Breaking Bad acting akin to Heath Ledger Joker this is my favorite show of 2024 if it sticks to Landing which I'm sure it will and it is the first time I have felt this good about a comic adaptation since daredevil on Netflix I love other TV shows plenty but nothing has made me feel like daredevil on Netflix since that show this has me feeling all the comic love all the how did they get away with this working in this tone lore all the incredible acting all the World building it is everything this is going to be in the conversation with Winter Soldier Daredevil Netflix W division it is astronomically good and I hope you Outro enjoyed this review this was a single take stream of Consciousness this was actually my second take I I
