NOW, TOM DONLON, IS THAT FORMER FBI OFFICIAL THAT WILL BE TAKING THE POSITION. AND ALTHOUGH HE HASN'T WORKED IN THE NYPD BEFORE, HE DOES HAVE A LENGTHY RESUME IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, STILL AT THE LOCAL LEVEL, ALL THE WAY TO THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. AND HIS APPOINTMENT COMES AS EDWARD CABAN IS BEING INVESTIGATED BY THE FBI. EDWARD CABAN OFFICIALLY STEPS DOWN AS THE CITY'S TOP COP. CALLS FOR HIS RESIGNATION GREW STRONGER OVER THE LAST WEEK AFTER THE FBI SEIZED HIS PHONE FOR WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE A CORRUPTION INVESTIGATION INTO HIS TWIN BROTHER, JAMES, AND ALLEGATIONS OF QUESTIONABLE CONSULTING WORK FOR NIGHTLIFE ESTABLISHMENT. >> HE CONCLUDED THAT THIS IS THE BEST DECISION AT THIS TIME. I RESPECT HIS DECISION AND I WISH HIM WELL. >> HE'S THE SECOND POLICE COMMISSIONER TO RESIGN UNDER MAYOR ERIC ADAMS, AND HELD THE POSITION FOR 14 MONTHS. HE WAS ALSO THE FIRST LATINO TO LEAD THE NYPD. CABAN SENT AN INTERNAL EMAIL TO MEMBERS OF SERVICE SAYING THE NEWS AROUND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS HAS CREATED A DISTRACTION FOR OUR DEPARTMENT, AND I AM UNWILLING TO LET MY ATTENTION BE ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN OUR IMPORTANT WORK OR THE SAFETY OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE NYPD, FOR THE GOOD OF THIS CITY AND THIS DEPARTMENT. I HAVE MADE THE DIFFICULT DECISION TO RESIGN AS POLICE COMMISSIONER. THOSE DISTRACTIONS ALSO INCLUDE FI RAIDS ON A NUMBER OF CITY LEADERS. >> BECAUSE OF THE MAGNITUDE OF THE SITUATION AND THE NUMBER OF INVESTIGATIONS GOING ON RIGHT NOW WITHIN THE ADMINISTRATION, THE DISTRACTIONS ARE STILL GOING TO BE THERE, TEMPORARILY FILLING THE POSITION IS PROMINENT FORMER FBI OFFICIAL TOM DONLON. >> DONLON HAS NOT WORKED FOR THE NYPD, BUT THE BRONX NATIVE HAS AN EXTENSIVE SECURITY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT BACKGROUND, INCLUDING INVESTIGATING THE 1993 TWIN TOWERS BOMBING. >> TOM IS AN EXPERIENCED LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONAL WHO HAS WORKED AT THE LOCAL, STATE, FEDERAL, AND INTERNATIONAL LEVELS. >> AND ALTHOUGH NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED IN ANY OF THOSE FBI INVESTIGATIONS, EDWARD CABAN SAYS THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A DISTRACTION TO THE DEPARTMENT HAD HE STAYED.
