First Take reacts to release of body cam footage of Tyreek Hill’s detainment

good morning developing story out of Miami prior to Sunday's win against the Jaguars Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police Sunday outside of Hard Rock stadium for a driving violation but was released from custody before the game yesterday the Miami Dade Police released body cam footage of the interaction with Hill please be advised some of the language and video may be of concern about drawing unwanted attention to himself before the video was released the union representing Miami Dade police officer said in a statement that Tyreek Hill was quote uncooperative one officer has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation continues now after the release of that video the Dolphins released a statement in part saying we are proud to have a strong and positive relationship with the Miami dat police department and other law enforcement agencies and recognize that the vast majority of officers do serve the community with the utmost character and desire to protect all citizens however as in on full display in the video released tonight there are some officers who mistake their responsibility and commitment to serve with misguided power while we commend mdpd for taking the right and necessary action to quickly release this footage we also urge them to take equally Swift and strong action against these officers who engaged in such behavior before the footage was released head coach Mike McDaniel gave his reaction to the incident please take listen I think the the thing that um me up honestly to be quite Frank is uh knowing that I don't know exactly I don't know what that feels like regardless I I I know um the feelings um expressed to me are unsettling so two things two things did come from you know the adversity well um super proud of teammates being teammates super super proud of of um our guys understanding the the civic responsibility of a platform and and intending to do right by it Nick I want to start with you as obviously former president of the NFL players Association and black man candidly um what was your reaction to seeing that body cam footage and the sound I think that we all come to these type of conversations we have them too too often but we come to it with our own life experience and so obviously mine as a black man is I'm was predisposed to expect um Tyreek Hill to have been mistreated and I'm I'm sure that I don't need to have this conversation or I don't need to say these things for other black people to understand we all understand these things there are people out there who I think are predisposed to assume that Tyreek Hill did something wrong and that he deserved this and I don't know how you can watch that footage and there's many more um hours of that footage online from other people's cameras I don't know how you can come away with that with any other understand or any other expectation than there were some officers in there who had a responsibility to deescalate that did not deescalate or escalating situation you could sense that some of the other officers recognize that and were saying things to try to turn the situation down but it kept getting turned up more and more and then when you throw the context back into the situation and understand that a certain point they recognize that they were dealing with um a Dolphins player I just am reminded that this happens thousands of times a day and those people who it happens to who it happen to do not have the megaphone that these players have and do not have the um benefit of the doubt that we're willing to give these players and it's scary and frustrating and disappointing that we were just here with Colin Kaepernick in 2020 talking about all this stuff not that we all thought it was going to get better off the I mean on the heels of that but in many cases it hasn't gotten better and I can't imagine that this would have gone the same way if they weren't black Shannon I'm not surprised that I'm not surprised that it happened like this the moment the moment Tyreek Hill said don't bang on my window baby came who do you think you are you don't have the power I don't give a damn got a $300,000 car I don't damn that you Tyreek Hill who you talking to like this and what made it worse is that when he handed him his driver's license and his his Ins Insurance or registration and roll the window back up how dare you do that to us do you know who we are as a matter of fact I'm going to take you out he's like I'm getting out n you're not getting out fast enough for us because you obeyed a direct order now they're on a they on a a uh I can quit it like this I don't know anybody like if you notice like when a group of dogss are around and if one of them bite you all of them will start to attack but as long as one remain calm all of them will remain calm and it seems like in this situation the moment one of them got agitated and took the well you know what I'm going break this window as a matter of fact get up out of there and once one of them did that all of them I get it uh um Dominique you weren't on yesterday Stephen A you and Molly you heard me said this when I get pulled over for speeding or my tent or traffic viol viation the my job is to get that officer to my car back to his car and on his way as soon as possible when they come to my window my window's already down I already got the insurance I got proof I got my driver's license I got whatever they going to need I have it ready because I'm trying to get them to and from and I know the longer they're there the greater their Chance is going to because they're going to be on the ego trip because at that point in time they have all the power they're really God side that road with taser gun baton mace all of that even though Tyreek didn't obey immediately I don't believe his Disobedience Rose to the level that it deserved what he got treated as he's trying to tell him man I just had surgery on my knee they're like I don't give a damn about your knee get down got his knee in his back and then one officer say stop crying really if was that necessary stop crying you see what he did doque you see Stephen A I really try to hey all that money you got you're a big old football player and I got you on face down my knee in your back and I got you crying like a you know what it was unnecessary I don't care Tyreek posed no threat Tyreek didn't do anything to rise to the level to get treated like he got treated well we all three agree there we said it yesterday this force was excessive it was unnecessary uh and it was indicative of how black men are treated or at least the perception of how black men are treated when we get stopped by police officers I pointed out Dom yesterday how in Troy Michigan I got pulled over uh by the cops detained handcuffed taken to the precinct in precinct for hours uh turns out I was driving with a suspended license and didn't know it I ow I paid the fine but I owed I I got there late so I owed $15 and didn't know and that's why they took me they took me to jail and kept me in there for about 4 hours I remember that but this is the part that we're missing and it has to be said y'all pointed out exactly what we pointed out yesterday and I love your point Dom about how it's the responsibility of the police officer to deescalate the situation and they agitated it more they made it worse and there's no question about that all of those things are true all of us said that but when it comes to Tyreek hill we also can't let him completely off the hook based on the state statement that was made by the by the police department of Florida they said quote unquote he was cooperative he was uncooperative we have a responsibility on this show in any kind of platform that we have to make sure we're doing what we can to save lives to make sure that we're doing what we can to ensure that somehow some way you get to live another day and fight that battle we know how wrong they were the police were excessive no excuses they should be ashamed of themselves the way they acted they would they just went over board totally true especially when it came to K Campell as well who did nothing and put his arms up he was he was no threat whatsoever okay they told him to step back he stepped back he let them know that was his friend another teammate and new Smith comes in there he's by his car he's on the phone he's clearly not posing any threat the police officers were definitely agitated they were wrong here's the problem we all came on the air seeing the initial footage in complete unadulterated support for Tyreek Hill you pull over they tell you to roll down your window what's the first thing Shannon just talked about the first thing they do when they pull us over they pull me over all my windows are down my hands on the steering wheel that is not what Kyrie Tyreek Tyreek Hill did Tyreek Hill had his window up the officer bangs on you know knocks on his window he didn't bang on his window he knocked on his window you hesitate to pull it down the first thing you say is don't bang on my window like that don't bang on my window like that don't bang on my window like that he asked you for your driver's license you hesitated to give him your driver's license you said in the postgame conference hey y'all what if I wasn't Tyreek Hill what if you weren't Tyreek Hill what would have happened to you if if somebody that wasn't Tyreek Hill kept the windows rolled up hesitated to roll it down didn't give you the license immediately when you asked for it and then hesitated to get out the car when they told you to get out the car see we got to be responsible and the point that I'm trying to make is this in no way should the officers be excused for what they did I totally agree with you Dom every syllable YouTu Shannon every syllable but I also am saying yo Tyreek yo bro you didn't deserve that I'm not implying that you did but the police officers do have the power when they pull up on you they tell you to roll down that window and they tell you to give you your driver's license and they tell you to get out that car that's what you got to do say that there's a difference between in my view a public conversation and a private conversation I had that conversation about Hands on the Wheel windows down don't move yes sir no sir police I had that conversation with my dad when I first got my driver's license the reason why I and I consider that that's a private conversation that's about the world that you're going to live in that's not to me at least that's not a public conversation the public conversation is create is trying to create the world that we desire to live in this is the world that he does live in where you have to be over overly differential to the police officers specifically when you're a black male the world that we aspire to live in is where the police officers are responsible in a situation like that and the reason why I don't I don't disagree with anything you said these are things that I'm going to say to my daughters and my son when they get old enough to drive also but the risk of saying that publicly is that it does suggest that and I know you said it with plenty of caveats you're not trying to suggest that but some unfortunately some people will grab on to just that that part of you saying Tyreek Hill should have done things differently and and create the idea but Stephen A's intention on this platform is to save people's lives that's why he's saying he's not condoning it by any means he's just saying I want people to this isn't right the way we live I I want to save people's lives I agree but we all go ahead Stephen I want to respond to that because I appreciate where you're coming from and I'm not disagreeing with you it is a private conversation in the most instances the problem is a public figure came up on a public platform and said what if I wasn't this public figure and so at that moment now all of a sudden we got to take into account and we got to measure and you know this just as well as I do you have to measure the importance of that Pro that conversation that should be private that does it need to become public so we can prioritize saving lives as opposed to being right cuz we know it right I guess my point is who don't know that I we're not any black people anything new to that those are the people that we're talking to they all know this every black person who's ever got a driver's license knows on how hold on you know and I this ain't about black folks this is about this is about anybody out there you and I both know there are always an abundance of people who and I'm not saying that Tyreek Hill was is this way was intentionally or anything like that I'm saying you know and you you and I both know there are an abundance of people who don't mind leaning towards belligerent particularly when it comes to police officers because of the agitation and so what we're saying is nah I want you to live I want you to live fight them afterwards at that moment get the hell out of that circumstance that incident that situation right there so you can as Shannon alluded to so you can live to fight another day because we've seen plenty of situations where it hasn't happened fatality's kicked in and that's that's what people that were unarmed that weren't giving resistance to police officers so we know how wrong they can be we have to make sure we don't provide any ammunition for them to be wrong that's what I'm saying you know guys sometimes being big and black can be humiliating and degrading because I've been pulled over and guys were y men and women were younger than I and I got to say yes sir no sir yes ma'am no ma'am because I want to go home to my kids I want to explain I'm not going back and forth if you ask me Mr Sharp you know how fast I was going no I do not when you were going this fast I'm sorry officer I didn't realize I was going that fast I'll take my chances in court but I'm going be able to tell my story I don't want someone to say I think this happened or this is what led up to it I'm going to tell my side of the story I realized at that moment the moment he makes contact with me he has all the power I have none Shannon sharp does not matter the money that I made the Hall of Famer that I am being on first take having my own platform that does not matter because you know why he doesn't know that the only thing that he knows that I'm big and black and he feels he's at threat he's at a risk so to try to diffuse that and to make it as appeasing as I possibly can I humble myself I hand it to him and I stay and it and sometimes I'm like bro it's unnecessary I know why you sto me but it's okay I'm going to get home I'm going to get you on your way I'm going be on my way and that's it some of us don't have to be big just black is enough and we're going to have those same experiences and if they ask me a question I answer it outside that I don't argue I don't debate anything because the the concession that the officers in that position are the ones with the power they are the ones with the training they are the ones with the higher responsibility to act with Integrity act with CALM Act with patience act with maturity you can nitpick every situation to find a way to disperse some blame but I do think that we all at this table agree that the per the people in that situation deserve to be reprimanded have their actions addressed deserve potentially to be punished to have um their behavior called to the carpet most of all are the police officers and that's what I want to focus on whatever we say about how you can save your life and concede power and and humble yourself in the presence of these people with power who are obviously in certain cases very insecure that's fine I agree with you on that I'll say that and we said that today for any people who are listening they should do that but we need to make sure that we walk away from this understanding because according to the should not have to live in the world where you have to be visual to the Poli and I get experiences as law enforcement officials when you roll your window up and you have no visibility what if they had reacted to the Other Extreme and pulled out their gun at that particular moment in time what I'm trying to say to you is this when they're living the life that they're living listen we know about police brutality we know there's Rogue police officers we know there's some officers that ain't worth the damn we understand it we know there's some racist offices we know all of these things Nobody's Fool here nobody's foolish here we get all of that part but we also concede that when we get in trouble we dollar 911 that most of police officers do protect and serve we we concede that so now we got to ask ourselves the question if we know what they have to deal with on a daily basis in terms of the violence that they were accustomed to confronting and they pull you over and you roll up your window and you hesitate to roll it down and then you roll it down but you roll it back up up and you deny them the visibility what if they had gone to the Other Extreme and pulled out their weapon see we got to be able to answer questions like that I I'm not a police officer that's not a job that I want I don't need to answer those questions the point is they wanted his license of registration he gave it to him roll the window up I saw the video the window tent was tinted but I could still see Tyreek hands I'm not here to judge um the proper procedure I'm not a law enforcement officer I however I do watching that situation you can see that the reaction to the situation we all agreed moments ago that the reaction to the situation was heightened it was it was you do you feel like the focus on Tyreek H he right now is irresponsible because the greater issue is is the treatment of police officers and African-Americans so our focus our our Focus isn't in the right place right now I think it's responsible to say it it's responsible to mention it but the important thing in this moment is the people whose job it is to handle those situations handle it properly I think pulling a gun out is overreaction he the window down did he not like he didn't do it as quickly as they wanted and then we saw how they reacted no we know had they pulled out a gun it would have been an extreme overreacting we're just talking about in that moment this is why and and by the way I don't believe we are focusing on Tyreek Hill I think we're focusing on the police officers we know how wrong they were we all concede that we've all we keep saying that I'm good we've all expressed that all I'm trying to say is that in the end the police officer and their need to be reprimanded I think it's more important that nobody got harm yeah that's I think it's more important to point that how you avoid harm well I mean harm comes in youan talk about this talking about this yeah I I I I mean I think Shannon d i was G to say I think the thing is they came and when Tyreek was like don't bang on my window he's agitated because he got pulled over he's on to work he's agitated when they bang on his window and they ask him these questions why you don't have your seat Bel on well I didn't feel like putting it on you know what all the I you know don't patronize me you know like hey and so now we know when you get an argument we we agitated I'm agitated your voice elevate my voice Elevate now I got to show you I'm we in a p in contest and I got to show you I'm the biggest skunk and so it it it got it escalated a lot quicker than what it should have and it and you're right absolutely right Dominique I wish so a cute cooler head would have prevailed cuz there was a situation with me I had me a couple homeboy was out and one officer told me to move the other officer told me I could stay where I was I moved a little further he said no he like no that's Shannon sharp he cool he said I told him to move and leave okay clearly the guy out rank the other officer that told me I I moved that's what I did I ended up leaving and we get how it is but I I agree with you Dominique but it's just we Dominique I agree with you you you're absolutely right the police officers are the one that are trained and chose to do line of work point is that you're right we all it's both things could be true all need to deescalate the situation but you said if if Shannon and I got into an argument and it gets heightened and heightened and heightened and heightened that's fine we two civilians like if I was trained to be an argument you're saying you should be the adult you should be the adult in the room obviously you're the trained one you are you do this every day you should be the adult but one of the reasons why we're complaining about what what what transpires in our society is because we know that those people in positions of Power are not acting that wayct so again what I'm saying is if we know they're not acting that way then what we going to do we we then we have to take it upon ourselves not to agitate the situation because my God we want to go home agreed but we as as long as at the same time we acknowledge that the reason the reason why we are having to pick up this slack is because certain people and as you said it's not everyone certain people are not willing to do the job in the way that is supposed to be done that's right
