news obviously this tragedy will have an impact on a community and the people that live in that building homicide investigators try to piece together the deaths of a woman and young girl in North Vancouver as police say they fell from an apartment balcony plus there is some real challenges in regards to availability of product manufacturers warn some grocery shelves could go empty if Canada's commercial rail networks are hit with a shutdown and I've just have nothing but Pride for the church and where it's come to a long journey to inclusion why a Baptist Church in Suri left its denomination to become fully inclusive of lgbtq plus people good evening thanks for joining North Vancouver balcony fall us I'm Michelle gaso we begin in North Vancouver where homicide invest tigators have been called in after a woman and girl died early this morning police say they fell off an apartment balcony our officers arrived on scene and located two females who had uh uh you know had injuries sustained from a fall um paramedics along with fire department um uh attempted life-saving measures but sadly the two females uh did not survive their injuries it happened at 4:30 this morning in the 100 block of esplanad Avenue the integrated homicide investigation team says it has taken conduct of the investigation and is working in partnership with the North Vancouver RCMP ihit says it's believed the two were known to each other and they are not looking for any other suspects at this time anyone with information is asked to contact police with a possible shutdown of Rail strike Canada's commercial rail system industry leaders warn Shoppers could start seeing empty grocery store shelves that's because many essential goods are made made in Canada or shipped to the West Coast by rail our John Hernandez explains what a strike could mean for British Colombians pastas cereals even sauces there's no shortage of goods that arrive on BC grocery store shelves by rail there is some real challenges in regards to availability of product Michael Gren represents many manufacturers from central Canada who ship their Goods West if a commercial rail shut down does happen he says it wouldn't take long before those products go out of stock we have built up some inventories in western Canada but you know you're looking at maybe a week or two worth of incremental inventory the looming job action comes as negotiations have stalled between thousands of unionized rail workers and their employers Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City both companies have issued lock out notices that could begin on Thursday the Teamsters Union has served a 72-hour strike notice to cpkc Canada's labor Minister says he will meet with both sides this week and push them to find deals if there is a shutdown shipping Goods to the West Coast by truck could lead to higher grocery prices when you look at at packaged Goods or consumer goods that travel from central Canada to the West Coast it's it's the equivalent of 20,000 truckloads a week we don't have the incremental truck capacity to compensate grden warns it could also lead some customers to hoorde a problem not seen since the early days of the pandemic manufacturers have already stopped shipping some perishable items like milk and hazardous materials like fertilizer then there's the looming impact on public transit like the West Coast Express which carries thousands of commuters a day on cpay KC owned Rail lines if a work stoppage happens on the railways people are not going to be able to get to work that affects employees and it also infects affects employers as well cascading problems these industry leaders hope can be avoided they're calling on Ottawa to step in and mediate negotiations but the clock is ticking John Hernandez CBC News Back to school costs Vancouver like it or not it's that time of year when students teachers parents and Guardians start to think about a return to school but back to class expenses go beyond tablets and and pencil cases as Liam Brittain reports a new survey finds filling The Lunchbox is emptying many pockets 15-year-old Harry Emmanuel knows the value of a dollar he spent the last few weeks selling lemonade in Creekside Park to buy a bike a goal the young entrepreneur has now achieved what makes her a successful day selling lemonade is it got to be a hot day yeah it has to be a hot day today it's a bit cloudy but it went pretty well I guess his mom hgam baraki knows the value of a dollar two these days it's not cheap being a parent of four shoes and clothes are it's it's yeah sometimes you know you have you en forc to go to Tri Source a new survey suggests parents across Canada are facing growing cost pressures now that survey conducted by Le for Capital 1 found across Canada parents expect to pay almost $900 more than last year for each child for a whole variety of things last year was around 68 $800 this year just over $7,700 the online survey received 1,5 responses weighted demographically for comparison a probability sample of the same size would yield a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1% it asked parents for their spending in six categories and in five of those categories BC parents spent less than the national average school daycare and extracurriculars was the only outlier BC parents reported paying just over 2,100 per child about 10% higher than the national average how many kids are in hockey and how much you think you spend on hockey every year all five are in hockey so I don't know I don't want to add that up the biggest increase across Canada came from the rising cost of food I think Dairy is a lot I think a lot of the produce depending on the time of year I mean we go into the store and I some things have just doubled like dry goods cereal with kids heading back to class soon Advocates say funding is badly needed to expand food program in schools we are able to reach over 18,000 students um in over 290 programs across the province but we're still seeing um a gap of over 25,000 students that aren't getting that essential support that they need to start their day off right Ottawa in June announced a billion dollars over five years for a new National School food program they expect that initiative to start serving meals by the end of this Academic Year and Victoria points to a $214 million investment in the feeding Futures program last year adding 90% of schools now have a food program compared to 60% in 2021 both governments Keen to tout their efforts to quench a major cost of living concern Liam Britain CBC News Vancouver a northern BC doctor is Psychiatry hospital in Northern BC pushing to bring a dedicated psychiatric hospital to the region Dr Barb kanaine is a psychiatrist in Prince George she says people with severe mental health needs require a dedicated care unit and the lack of one is impacting the overall care system Kane says people in need end up going to ERS and general hospitals often not getting the appropriate And Timely care they need Community Resources you can put all the money you want into the community it's not going to work we have to have the highest level of care we have to have the Psychiatry hospital to get people to the level that they might be able to manage Kane is petitioning for at least a 50 bed facility to be built in Prince George where people can come in for short or long-term Someone cut down 10 trees in Colona treatment the city of Colona is trying to find whoever cut down 10 Ponder Roa pine trees in the city the trees were found at the top of a steep slope in Mission Ridge Park in the city's lower Mission neighborhood cola's urban forestry manager says it appears someone chopped down the trees and dumped them further down the slope we're not super pleased we're actually quite disappointed that someone went in and cut these trees down in a in a public park it is a sensitive ecosystem and it is it's an import that roots of these uh trees are super important uh because of the sand and the highly erodable soils the city says the trees are a potential Wildfire fuel Hazard and will need to be removed anyone with information is asked to contact the city the RCMP or Crim Stoppers in the Okanagan dozens of Fruit growers protest closure people gathered to protest the closure of the BC tree fruit Cooperative last month the co-op's board shuttered the 88-year-old cooperation as Brady ston reports Farmers want the government to step in and save it waving signs at drivers along this busy intersection in Colona Okanagan Fruit Growers are protesting the sudden closure of BC tree fruits those who came out on Tuesday are from farming families up and down the valley including Kelly Wander from auuu so they announced the closure and we're in the middle of our harvest season and where are we supposed to take our fruit last month BC tree fruits board announced to Growers it would no longer accept fruit shipments citing a lack of fruit climate effects and financial challenges now the co-op's packing plants and fruit storage buildings are shuttered leaving Farmers scrambling to find a place to ship their apples plums and pears it's going to sit in the sun it's going to keep it's going to rot right so most farmers are going to leave fruit on the tree now Growers want the government to help them restart the 88-year-old cooperative and investigate what led to its demise we need the Attorney General to step in so that we can uh uh sort through uh the mess that has been left by management the province has pledged to help farmers find places to ship their fruit and last week announced some supports for the industry but so far it is not committed to saving BC treat fruits from closing Brady Sten CBC News Colona a vancouver-based film company is the first to get hit with a fine from Fisheries in oceans Canada for flying a drone too close to a pod of orcas River Road films will have to pay $30,000 after an investigation by the dfo's whale protection unit the company pled guilty in July to unlawfully capturing footage by operating too close to a group of killer whales off of Vancouver Island the DFO says drones can disturb marine mammals and it's illegal to fly one lower than 300 M over the animals the organization the orcal lab caught the moment on camera and it flew probably only a meter above the heads of the orcas it was just it astounded us to be truthful uh and it was such an outrageous uh moment I guess that we uh contacted the department of fisheries and oceans uh and complained the DFO says the film company applied for a permit in 2020 to film animals with classifications under the species at risk act that application was denied CBC News has reached out to River Road films for comment but hasn't heard back to BC's Wildfire situation now there are 360 active wildfires three of Wildfire situation them of note one of those is the Shetland Creek Fire in the southern interior which the BC Wildfire service says is now being held the massive Blaze has destroyed several homes although it's not likely to spread any further officials say Crews still have hard work ahead and in the northwest of the province two helicopters have been called in to help fight the Coria Creek Wildfire it has prompted two evacuation alerts for about 50 properties from witset towards Hazelton and while warm dry conditions continue in the north cooler wetter weather in Southern BC is helping to tackle some of those wildfires in the region there's still a chance for thunderstorms across the central interior although any lightning strikes are expected to come with rain a Baptist Church in South sui left its denomination in February in order to South Point Church become fully inclusive of lgbtq plus people discussions about whether to stay or go lasted more than 15 years at the heart of this story is one member of the church who came out as gay in 2008 he was determined to remain part of his faith community even though they didn't fully accept him Rio Canada's William bur shares the story of South Point Church and its Journey towards inclusion welcome and you belong and you're part of this household of God South Point Church wants to make it clear that everyone is welcome but that welcome wasn't always so clear the church was part of the Canadian Baptists of western Canada a denomination that defines marriage as between a man and a woman only when Colin Evans came out over 15 years ago the congregation didn't know how to react you know it was it possible that the church was going to kick me out and I'd have you know and that would drastically change my life his presence caused a division within the church which discussed canceling his membership but when Colin Evans met David Carlson the man who would become his husband they began attending Services together undeterred we were uh very much targeted uh by certain parts of the church that were saying like you need to take a stand against David and Colin you need to let them know that they're on the outs they're not okay um and that was it was a horrible time for us simply by being there we made we caused enough discomfort that the conversations were having to be had long time church member Lea Costo remembers a meeting where David Carlson wasn't allowed to vote I remember thinking oh wow that's hard and and generous of him to be here as a witness and a participant without like the ratification of you're a full member with time the people most opposed to Colin and David left the church 10 years ago a new pastor Anne Baxter Smith arrived and helped the the church come to a consensus it was a very conflictual time there at the beginning but once I began to get clarity and find language for around what we believed and I began to stand on that and name that then then I'd have these waves of relief the church confirmed Colin Evans membership and extended it to David Carlson in 2015 David and Colin adopted Becca and raised her in the church but the story wasn't over Baptist churches in Alberta filed complaints and the Canadian Baptists of western Canada adopted measures to discipline congregations that deviate from their values that's why South Point Church chose to leave the denomination which did not respond to our requests for an interview to have the church say no you're not going anywhere we as a church are taking on the labor of this to protect you South Point had joined another Baptist Association which fully accepts lgbtq people with the support of its congregation I could get emotional it feels um like relief it feels like justice this is a human story it's our story and it's a story for us to to face up to and to deal with Colin Evans and David Carlson just moved to Victoria they're Greatful for their Journey with South Point I've just have nothing but pred for the church and where it's come to but I feel so grateful that we didn't give up that we stuck with it that we leaned into the discomfort and that we listened I think to God's spirit and we're open to change gratitude for a path 15 years long that has at times being extremely painful but a journey that the congregation nevertheless sees as a blessing William Burr CBC News Siri now to the tasty and some times downright weird treats being served up Chicken Pizza at the p& summer fair this year it's a unique slice of everyone's favorite food take a look we settled on the chicken chicken chain Pizza uh we thought that that just put its stamp on a fair fair concept it's not a traditional um obviously uh cream or tomato based Pizza it's um got a stir fry sauce uh as the base which is uh oyster sauce soy garlic ginger uh it's t with cheese and then the Chowan mixture of um noodles vegetables chicken with sesan seasoning IDE some sometime you just think of something and say okay what's popular oh we living in Vancouver Pacific West Coast food you know so just take the Cuisines from the Pacific coming up a surprise passenger hitches a ride with a couple of paddle borders on Vancouver Island encounter officials call rare that story is hitchhiker while they were out on the water one of the women said she was initially worried the sea oner was trying to escape a predator the little creature showed no sign of distress or injury they kept as much distance as they could from the otter and steered the paddle board back to shore Fisheries in oceans Canada says this encounter is rare even though sea otters do occasionally inhabit and swim through this part of Vancouver Island the DFO says getting too close to wildlife in their habitat can disturb and even harm [Music] Downtown Vancouver them well here is a live shot of downtown Kate joins us for a look at the forecast ahead thank you Michelle before we get into the nuts and bolts of the forecast I want to bring up this little sort of stats chart I put together earlier today I was just chatting off the air with a couple of our staff about the fact that Summer's been drier than normal but it doesn't feel like it sort of late August has trended a bit cooler cloudier than normal a little wetter as well but overall we've had 19 rainy days out of 81 so far that's from the 1st of June until the 20th of August normally we'd have 24 wet days out of 92 for a June July August summer so we're running a little bit low here and in addition our rainfall totals are a bit below average but you know with 10 days left in the month we'll see yet there's plenty of still on the way uh what it's done to our fire danger rating chart for BC is really unusual it's almost flipped it on its head now we're seeing the southern part of the province with a lowering fire danger rating courtesy of some of the cool weather we've had and courtesy of some of the rain that's on its way as well our daytime highs today they were really seasonal 21 degrees at YVR warm but not hot across much of the BC Southern interior and it's trending a little cooler than that with some wetter weather on the way satellite shot shows you the low of the was around here much of the day today getting ejected as it weakens and then being replenished by this one coming down the coastline a lot of precipitation and strong wind associated with that low it's going to sort of plow on through the North Coast tonight so your icons look really nice and sunny in areas like Prince rert and Terrace but it's going to rain tonight the Sun comes out tomorrow around midday scattered showers and a few breaks of sun over the north as well definitely turning cooler and wetter over Vancouver Island numerous showers perhaps an emitted Thunder shower a shade cooler for the BC Southern interior as well we'll add clouds scattered showers and maybe the odd thunderstorm to your forecast and right here in Metro Vancouver well I backed off a bit on the idea of how wet it's going to be tomorrow but certainly it's a gray day a dreary day some showers around we recover on Thursday as the sun comes out again Friday Saturday both looking favorable and dry I think the back half of the weekend starts to Trend unsettled again we'll add at least a few showers to that late August forecast thanks Russ and that is your late news for Tuesday thank you for watching for news at any hour you can always go to our website that's cbc.ca slbc good night [Music] [Music]
