like thinking that everything will be gone by morning meanwhile Ian Sheldon and his family are holding out in Hinton he and his wife own a business in Jasper and were in the process of selling their home Sheldon is hopeful they may still be untouched hoping that that home is still standing and um we're in the middle of selling it so that the new owners still get to move into their beautiful home and and then we still have a business downtown and um for the sake of town and everybody I just hope downtown is still there and uh and that there's still homes that people can live in meanwhile Jasper evacuees will continue to stay in the community next door in Hinton where they say they've been treated like family Travis mckuin CBC News Hinton many of the evacuees from Jasper fled to Calgary more than 400 kilometers away they're tired and anxious and as colle Underwood shows us they're also being resilient as they watch what's unfolding from afar Alice fareli left her Jasper home in a hurry not realizing she may never return she's originally from Ukraine having fled the war and came to Canada 2 years ago so she says she never expected she'd be forced to run again she just learned her home was lost in the fire what can I do I if I if I break down now I will what will I do I will just sit and cry and nothing's going to change right Jasper residents find some temporary relief at this evacuation Reception Center in Calgary many exhausted and in a State of Shock about what's happening back at their home but it wasn't always running smoothly last night some were turned away because the center wasn't being staffed 24/7 tired and kind of frustrated for sure by lack of communication or the communication that we did get not being accurate uh but I don't know I'm just trying not to stress the City of Calgary says there was a brief window of time when it wasn't staffed but says it will now remain open until Saturday morning to those evacuees who did not immediately receive assistance I apologize sincerely I can only imagine what it must have been like to have to rapidly evacuate and then drive 12 to 15 hours to show up here and be met with closed doors Calgary is one of a few cities welcoming evacuees Edmonton and Grand Prairie have also opened their doors The Province estimates about 10,000 people ACC combination of residents and seasonal workers fled Calgary City officials say unlike other evacuees they've helped in the past there are fewer families what we're seeing in the evacuees that are arriving now are are typically a younger population that's working in Jasper that drove thems here and they they need some accommodation and they need some other supports but not to the level that we saw in Yellow knife that younger population reflective of a tourist town that relies on seasonal service work workers who quickly form bonds we're trying to keep it as a big group like we're pretty much family up there it's all remote so just try to keep together many are hanging on to the hope that the community will be able to Rally together recover and rebuild Colleen Underwood CBC News Calgary one Jasper man says he's been receiving videos from First Responders showing entire neighborhoods leveled for him it wasn't a matter of if Jasper was going to be hit by a wildfire but when after Fort McMurray and after the Excel fire in 2017 I've been living with a list right beside my front door attack to the wall with whoever's home grab what's on this list and you head to the place that the authorities tell you to go this uh this is was the reality of the world that we were living in because we created over the course of 100 plus years the conditions for such a monster to exist firefighters here in BC meanwhile hope cooling temperatures will help win their battles against more than 400 blazes now burning many are still active with several new evacuation orders and alerts in the last 24 hours as Cory Bullock shows us the safety of people is Paramount wind is whipping through the southeast fire Center churning up wildfires like the dogtooth FSR in Golden there's about seven rescue vehicles firefighters uh once the fire jumped the highway they jumped in their vehicles and took off and they were screaming at us they're like evacuate now evacuate now I've never been through anything like that in my life the fire just south of the community has quickly grown in size engulfing more than 130 hectares the mayor of golden says six homes have been lost to The Blaze on Thursday ultimately we've lost a few homes and people Define them as structures but these are actually people's homes there are some buildings that have been damaged also but to this point in time we're not aware of any injuries or or anybody getting hurt he says crews are still working to learn the full extent of the damage and over in the west Cy it's a similar story it's been extremely windy this morning all last night the the wind gusts were were insane the entire Village of Silverton was evacuated Wednesday night because of the Awin Creek Fire but the mayor says she's holding out hope the smoke and the the fire does not look like it's h hit silveron nearby a cluster of fires in the west Cy dubbed the Sloane Lake complex broke out last week when a lightning storm rolled through the region keramas resident Lissa hinchel was camping across from Silverton when she saw the sky light up it was intense none of us had ever experienced anything like it um it was very powerful very on inspiring to to say the least and we were a little fearful to be honest the BC Wildfire service says cooler conditions and rain May give Crews the chance to make more progress on fighting fires at the forecast thankfully we're not going to see a return to some of the extreme temperatures uh returning to a bit more seasonal conditions however we do have warm conditions prevailing she says more resources are on route to help Crews battle the many blazes in the region and officials are urging everyone in BC to be prepared by packing a grab andg go kit and signing up for emergency alerts Cory Bok CBC News cran Brook there is some better news in the firefront in BC at least in Parts the evacuation Alert in Ashcraft has been a lifted as of this afternoon meanwhile the communities of wells and Barkerville are still on evacuation order but 300 firefighters are being helped by intermittent rain as they battle to control fast spreading flames you have to have lots and lots of rain for it to really help so they they do their techniques of of getting control lines so the fire can can burn in on itself authorities say they're still assessing the situation to see if they can pull back that order and allow people to return home The Blaze near Wells are said to be large and spreading fast meteorologist Russ late is in for Darius madavi this week let's have a look at the first forecast bit of a different picture there with the fire danger it is be it light or intermittent every little bit of rain helps Dan we've been talking about that the past few days as well again our fire danger rating uh from Monday compared to today we can see that really the northern part of the province has enjoyed a a great reduction in the fire forest fire danger rating and it's a couple of elements that helped to do that one was the temperature has come down across the north we see our maximums today where number of temperatures in the teens for a high even though the sun came out a few times in between the downpours across the South we're still a little bit elevated uh mid to uper 20s in some of the southeast corner of the province for today but what we're really seeing in the long range with these active fires much more so over the South now by the way the flood watches that were over the north they've all ended when the rain tapered off in addition all areas north of quinel the air quality advisories have ended it's really the southern part of the province that is shrouded in Smoke the southeast Corner especially where a number of active fires and fires of note continue to burn we can see those air quality advisories in effect currently as well as parts of the Nicola parts of the South Thompson in towards m Park but in terms of what's coming for the weather tomorrow I think high pressure begins to build in again ever so slowly things dry out Trend sunnier not necessarily warmer we saw some of that already in the South here today at Metro Vancouver we had a couple of showers early on and then it began to Trend sunnier Breezy a little bit milder we got to 22 degrees in Pit Meadows I think your temperature overnight tonight nice clear skies till we get to the pre-dawn hours tomorrow some extra cloud in about 13 your full forecast Dan a little later in the show sounds great thank you Rome at the end of this month Vancouver will lose almost two dozen transitional housing units with Supportive Services the facility was first opened by BC housing and Coast mental health as a covid response to get marginalized people into safer conditions BC housing noted it was supposed to be a temporary fix now 3 years later it's about to close as Bel pury reports some of the people living there fear they will soon be left homeless it's a sweet idea in its fledgling stages My First Market is Saturday at UBC so I'll be at that farmers's market the start of her vegan ice cream business is a big step for Elaine Lynn until recently she spent a year in hospital I was struggling really bad with my suicidality so I was having like suicidal attempts multiple times a day and just unable to keep myself safe because of how bad I was doing mentally in March she was strong enough to move into supportive trans transitional housing with mental healthc Care staff on site she was informed at the outset the facility would close on July 31st but BC housing also promised that they guaranteed us all housing before July 31st of equal or similar value and that's not been followed through the 21 second floor units leased from Easter Seal's house are funded by BC housing and operated by Coast mental health since 2021 the lease and services have been extended year year by year until now our team focuses so so many resources on doing our best to match people with the housing that will best meet their need the reality of it is there's there's not enough housing in British Columbia BC housing says residents have been offered multiple options for new housing so far I've been offered housing that is like heavily substance used Focus so a lot of active users there I've been offered a place in Richmond which is out of the vicinity I specified according to BC housing six residents have already been moved others will be supported to move this week we don't understand why this is happening and this is the lack of communication and the refusal to work and cooperate with us has caused nothing but mental and emotional stress and pain to every single one I have tenants coming to me every day asking me what to do the fear is the promise of equal quality housing is about to become no housing at all for myself it's very hard to see my life like past July 31st I have no idea where I'm going B pury CBC News Vancouver a Prince George RCMP officer has been found guilty of obstruction of justice related to an incident involving the death of an IND indigenous man nearly seven years ago Constable Arthur Dalman was accused of telling a bystander to delete video from his phone the man had filmed the aftermath of a police takedown more now from the cbc's Jason Proctor it's been nearly seven years since Dale Calver died after a police incident which saw multiple officers apprehend and arrest him in what's been described as a violent takedown Calver died about 30 minutes after he was taken into custody in a packed courtroom today a judge accepted the testimony of a bystand who came on the scene after Cala was in custody and started filming he said Constable Arthur Dalman approached him and ordered him to either hand over his phone or delete the video Dalman denied the accusation but the judge said he didn't believe him there was another accused in the case who the judge acquitted Dalman is the only one of five officers to have been charged in connection with events surrounding Culver's death to have been found guilty manslaughter charges were stayed against two other officers and charges were also stayed against another mounty he was charged with obstructing justice ca's daughter Lily speed was in in the courtroom here is her reaction to today's decision we did have our own little suspicions that dolman was going to be found guilty um how the judge chose to word it was quite intense and I kind of couldn't help but happy cry I guess a little bit while he was describing it cuz it's been a long seven years waiting to hear those words the courtroom included two dozen uniformed RCMP members who came to support a colleague Culver's cousin Debbie Pierre was in the court as well as were many other supporters who see this case as a test of the judicial system's ability to handle allegations made against police in relation to treatment of indigenous people we have not had our day in court to hear what happened to to Dale and uh today we were able to hear portions of of what happened with Dale and that's so important for our family to understand who was all involved why Dale ended up dead and what are the consequences of that Doan's lawyer said he'll file an application to stay the charge because of delay sentencing will be set later this year Jason Proctor CBC News Vancouver if you take a bus right Sky Train the seabs use West Coast Express or handy Dart listen up TransLink wordss if it cannot find a new funding model it may have to cut Transit service in half as Katie doosa reports on the dire forecast And The Plea for more money imagine trying to get home from downtown Vancouver but there's no buses after 8:00 p.m. or waiting twice as long for a sky train or sea bus I rely on Transit I take bus Sky Train and then I bus again so Transit is very important for me I will feel Troublesome about that because I think the actually the that kind of the rapid bus and the frequent bus is very I think it's very important in my life or being stuck in traffic from the Fraser Valley to to downtown because the West Coast Express commuter train has been parked that's the worst case scenario now being outlined by TransLink in a new report it warns that Transit service could be gutted unless the federal and provincial governments Pony up more cash CEO Kevin Quinn says transing is facing a financial shortfall of $600 Million by 2026 the results of that report were nothing short of shocking so what would these potential Cuts mean for commuters according to the report 145 out of 230 Transit routes would be cancelled including most night buses Sky Train and seab bus service would drop by 30% handy Dart Services would run only for essential medical appointments almost 700,000 people would no longer be able to walk to public transit and that would push more commuters onto already clogged roads increasing congestion by 20% impacts won't just be felt by transit Riders it would be felt by the entire region the provincial government has been providing temporary relief funding for TransLink since the start of the pandemic but that money dries up in 2025 the Mayor of Richmond says it's not sustainable for TransLink to be constantly wondering where its funding will come from year after year I'm not surprised to hear the gravity of the cuts and I I want to emphasize um I am fully confident that the province particularly and the federal government will step up and they'll be supportive uh but the question is if they're not then what BC conservative leader John rustad says despite $1.7 billion in what he calls provincial government bailout since 2020 the transit authority is still floundering he wants an audit of translink's books TransLink itself is saying that they have record ridership why did they allow this numbers to get to be as bad as they are today official opposition Kevin Falcon released his party's Transit plan Thursday vowing to extend the sky train to the NorthShore and build a new larger iron workers Memorial Bridge Falcon does not yet have a cost estimate for those plans if we don't start investing in infrastructure we are going to have people sitting in parking lots for hours a day as is often the case today BC's Transportation Minister did not guarantee the TransLink will get the money it's asking for well I I think the Mayors are are looking at the provincial election cycle coming up and understandably they're wanting to get some commitments however Fleming argues that the NDP has been a reliable funding partner for trans lake and is calling on Ottawa to step up Katie D roza CBC News Victoria a Siri homeowner accused of violating stop work orders and building three unauthorized Suites in her house is the target of enforcement by the city but as mea Baines reports surri is struggling to stop illegal construction after construction of several illegal add-ons to her Newton home giman joot Dylan told a city hearing that she's trying to bring her home into compliance but she argues sir's bylaw department has been harassing her I urgently request the council to direct bylaw officers to seize the ongoing harassment which includes unwarranted visits to the property Dylan a licensed realtor says she hired a contractor but was unaware no permits had been issued for the work she says she was dealing with health issues at the time the city claims construction was still taking place despite it posting several stop work orders it says there were efforts to evade bylaw officers including workers fleeing the scene the work includes three unauthorized secondary Suites a two-story addition to two sides of the property a small roof structure over the front door and a laundry room we have spent approximately $250,000 for the renovation work by taking debt an Airbnb posting for a two-bedroom Suite shows photos of the same home listed for $228 a night city council voted to file a notice on Dylan's property informing any potential buyer of the unauthorized construction this is what the city can do at this point we can always take people to court the challenge with that is that takes a lot of time and a lot of resources the city has issued Dylan six bylaw notices totaling $3,000 in fines at least half a dozen homes in Dylan's Newton neighborhood have notices posted on them a building contractor who has had to tear down and rebuild sections of homes says it's common all over the Lower Mainland he says electrical work done without a permit is especially concerning and it's all meant to protect the homeowner too their insurance may possibly be voided if they don't do things properly and with proper uh permits Dylan is still asking the city for a development variance permit to keep an addition to the back of the home we would like to uh put forth on the city Hall's desk so they can go ahead and review the plans Dylan did not reveal the name of the contractor who performed the illegal construction Mira Baines CBC News Siri nearly a month after a terrifying crash between a boat and a sea plane in Vancouver's Cole Harbor experts are once again cautioning people to be very careful sarab Sandu has more on the push for safety in a very busy shared Waterway typically the the planes are always taking off into the wind and they're Landing into the wind so um you know which way the wind's coming from when you're on the water and and you can be assured that that's the way that the planes will be taking off Bruce hayn says for anyone out on a boat or any kind of watercraft staying clear of a sea planes pathway is imperative be prepared and get educated on the rules of the waterways last month two people were hospitalized following a collision between a sea plane and a pleasure boat Transportation safety board is currently investigating the Collision the crash spark calls for more safety measures in and around Bard Inlet where the Collision occurred these experts say it's up to people on boats and other watercrafts to make way for the bigger vessels large deep sea vessels and sea planes have limited visibility don't assume they can see you it's also hard for a big ship to change course or come to a complete stop currently there is no licensing required for recreational boating in BC however experts say all boter must equip themselves of the safety regulations before entering the water recreational boers must be particularly aware of the rules in designated shipping lanes such as those in English Bay and in other parts of the Salish sea and even those planning to venture out on motorless watercraft there is a word of caution if you're on a paddle board you still need safety equipment you need a PFD you need a whistle you need a buoyant throwing line there's stuff that is that is necessary for you to have to go out on the water Sergeant McDougall says with strong winds keeping course could become challenging even for expert water sports enthusiasts it was uh pretty evident last night is people weren't paying attention to the forecast and the celebration of lights were were on and we had a southwesterly that was 10 to 15 knots and people on those personal watercrafts were really struggling experts say even those who are out on Lake water need to watch out for traffic around them and yield to any emergency crews in action with the wildfires in BC right now I'm asking and urging all recreational boers on the on the lakes in the interior to stay away from helicopters and and planes that are scooping and working on the Wild far Hy says anyone planning to spend time on the water should have proper safety gear and a float plan and tell someone on the dry land when they are expected back s Sandu CBC News Vancouver wildfires are top of Mind in BC and Alberta after the break we take a look at the fires posing posing the greatest risk and our communities are reacting stay with us [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] millions of visitors come to experience its natural beauty including movie stars and royalty but Jasper National Park is now devastated by Wildfire it's not just a piece of Canada's identity but also a world heritage site and as Lindsey dcom tells us there is concerned some of its Rich history maybe ashes this place is unbelievable every year more than 2 million tour tourists visit [Music] Jasper there's something about the place that is so essentially Canadian just ask Forest ecologist Phil Burton that's a 1970s era selfie at the park this last year with his grandson interesting that that that places like that can feel both like home and like a a special a special event Jasper is named for a voyager who ran the Trading Post the fur trade brought settlers the railway brought tourists this mirror of the Gods is a highlight of Jasper National Park the iconic views magical even in old school black and white in the second world war Jasper was home to a secret project a failed attempt to make an aircraft carrier from Ice Hollywood came for the scenery Marilyn Monroe stayed at the Jasper Park Lodge the same fancy hotel that more recently hosted Queen Elizabeth and it's literally like the clearest water ever you really can't be sad here honestly we were in the reality TV dating competition The Bachelor the hotel says its structures appear to be okay but history buff Craig beard is worried iconic buildings may be gone when something like this happens if something burns down the history remains like the stories of those places remain but the ability to to touch that history to be within the walls of a church or a building or a hotel that has existed for decades that's gone forever there are worries about the land too indigenous people were kicked out of their traditional territory to make way for the Park Alberta mate leader Kayla Mitchell took this photo visiting Jasper last year you know that's where our ancestors were and a lot of there's grave sites there there's there's homesteads there you know that's where our people come from land will rejuvenate buildings rebuilt but what happened in Jasper is a loss shared by so many Lindsay dcom CBC News Vancouver back for the Wildfire situation in BC many of the blazes in the Sloan Valley are believed to have been started by storms one woman saw lightning ignite four fires while camping in the area with her family last week they'd set up on the west shore of slokan Lake only accessible by boat it was intense none of us had ever experience anything like it um it was very powerful very on inspiring to to say the least and we were a little fearful to be honest um the thunder and lightning it seemed it was like right above us so first standing on the beach we then uh quickly noticed maybe we should take a little bit more shelter and stand closer to the forest and um yeah I just kept going all all over the place and the Thunder was so loud it it literally shook us in our flip box having this massive storm going we have a uh metal boat right so we figured that would probably be the least uh safe place to be in and you know the wind picked up and it was wavy and also there was other people at the campground as well so we were concerned of their safety as well it was too pay families with us they had arrived with their kayaks so they definitely wouldn't have really been safe to uh take off in their little kayaks you know their kids and um I think altogether there were seven fires that started that time and we saw four of them still to come we're less than a day away from the Paris Olympics opening ceremony we'll bring you the latest on what to expect stay with us [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] competition is already underway at the Paris 2024 Olympics less than a day before the opening ceremony Sela shivi takes a look at the last minute touches and security Jitters the stage is set with stands begging to be filled even as some are fussing with the final touches all ahead of a risky open a opening ceremony with the world watching it's a security Gamble and France knows it cue the heaviest police presence Paris has seen in times of peace and an eerie quiet in the barricaded streets it's more like a fortress than a bustling Capital this massive Security operation means more than a million people were screened ahead of the games athletes volunteers even locals and more than 4,000 were denied access to this crucial Zone near the river absolutely every officer available is deployed and working says this security expert and every precaution taken there's too much at stake Israel's athletes are getting 24-hour protection from Elite police squads the highest security France can provide with the conflict in Gaza provoking threats the team's first soccer match deemed high risk went off without any major disruption a relief for officials who confirmed Israel's plans for the ceremony what I can tell you is that the Israeli delegation will participate in the games and specifically in the opening ceremony just like any other delegation for other athletes there's a headyy mix of excitement and nervous anticipation ahead of the ceremony I think uh for sure France it's a little bit of Target it's not uh since today it's since many years because we are country of freedom and stuff I think that's all out of our control right now so just have to pray and hope we're safe for some other athletes like Canada's entire swim team including gold medal favorite summer Macintosh sailing down a boat for the opening ceremony is a no-o because it will interfere with their competitions looming fast never mind the security alert level which is the highest possible Sela shivi CBC News Paris an international human rights law firm is accusing the ioc of ignoring its own rules on neutrality as Brier Stewart reports The Firm says many of the athletes competing for Russia and Belarus at the Paris games have violated the rules by showing their support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine oan lvat is getting in a few last practices before she's off to Paris with the rest of Ukraine's Olympic wrestling team and she's relieved she won't have to face any Russians uh now it is uh very difficult time and uh still war with uh uh terroristic country oana Lev earlier this year Lev did go up against the Russian athlete but the Russian wrestlers invited to compete as neutrals at the Olympics all declined a protest against rules they see as discriminatory Olympic athletes aren't supposed to make any political demonstrations or protest test but Russian and Belarusian athletes have to undergo additional screening designed to root out those who have publicly supported Russia's military and its war on Ukraine in my opinion we should stay separated from politics Russia's trampoline Federation has one athlete going to the Olympics but another isn't because she failed the screening process they check all social media they uh Facebook Instagram some contend it wasn't thorough enough they should have found this really they should have found this it's embarrassing that they didn't the nonprofit Global rights compliant says about half of the Russian and Belarusian athletes who will be in Paris have broken the rules including trampolinist Angela bla she competed at an event where proar Banner hung in the background but I think it's pretty clear that most links to the war like this most expressions of open support I mean the ioc needs to be looking at them 15 Russian athletes are scheduled to compete in Paris and the athletes who have been authorized much smaller team than the Olympics in Tokyo where athletes also couldn't compete under their country's flag that time because of a national doping Scandal Brier Stewart CBC News London now Olympians might not be able to win any medals for looking great during the games but they may still try tomorrow we'll see the thetes in their team uniforms they can symbolize everything from national pride to a celebration of culture among other things liisa derin is the founder and Dean of fashion at the cut design Academy in Vancouver and has been watching Olympic style and fashion over the years Lisa we appreciate you joining us today uh let's start with Paris what are you watching for with the teams that are most striking so far uh well I am watching for Seline Dion Because she is who isn't who isn't because she is performing I'm super happy about that uh fashion wise though for me my favorite team is Hades uniform or my I'm going to show a few images but let's yeah why well I just they're a team of 15h and their uniform is just beautiful and it's like you know small But Mighty M and especially from a country that's been dealing with so much violence and strife we also have heard of Team Mongolia what stands out to you for them well their uniforms are beautiful and they've each been hand embroidered um I've read that each uniform took 20 hours to make uh the symbolism is beautiful they've they've embroidered by hand all the different motifs from the country it's just lovely it's amazing it's amazing now we do have to go with the little National the local how how's Canada doing when it comes to our our uniforms you know I was a little bit hard on Canada but I have to say they actually did a phenomenal job I was thinking oh they could have done better but then when you really look at it it's striking and the repres presentation of Canada nature inclusivity diversity I think they really nailed it nice what are some other big moments from other perhaps previous Olympics fashion and style-wise that stand out to you for me it's 1980 Lake Placid and the US team unbelievable Levi Strauss was the designer and the US was in full shearling jackets denim jeans white cowboy hat it was it was just fantastic so of the countries you mentioned what what messages do you think they're sending ending with these uniforms and maybe teams overall what do they want to share this year what I've noticed and it's beautiful I think there's really fantastic cultural representation for each country really took a lot of time and thought they were very mindful that way sustainability is a really big um uh a big platform for each country there's a lot of recycled Fabrics each country is used part of the uniforms from recycled Fabrics or recycled plastic which is wonderful they've been really mindful m Lisa der Menan we really appreciate your time and your expertise thanks for taking a a look at this for us we appreciate it thank you so much for having me cbc's live coverage of the Olympic opening ceremony begins tomorrow at 10: a.m. Pacific watch it live here right on CBC television and on CBC J still to come law BLS and its parent company are set to pay millions to settle a class action lawsuit more on the bread story next [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] he [Music] he [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] meteorologist Russ late is back with our provincewide weather forecast no wildfires close to the coast thank goodness Russ what about smoke though you know we might start to see a little smoke around here not from any nearby fires Dam but I've been looking at some of the smoke model forecast uh distribution forecast for the smoke these are our active fires right now and of course as we mentioned earlier in the NewsHour so many active fires out of control and fires of note in the Southeast corner of the province and really we've seen that a lot of the fires of Note have dropped off the board over the northern part of the province where the forest fire danger rating has been lowering we had a lot of precipitation move across those regions about 24 hours ago it has since cooled off today the temperatures in the teens for most of the central interior and parts of the northern half of the province as well in the South where all the active fires are going on and there's so much smoke in the air we're seeing a circulation around this low is exiting towards Alberta but before it gets there it's entraining a little bit of smoke diffuse thin smoke a loft this was early this morning some of that smoke wrapping around by the time we get to the end of the day tomorrow it is possible we'll start to see a shroud of smoke aoft moving over Coastal sections as well this is a guess admittedly it is a forecast model but right now it's looking like some of that smoke May begin to Fan out across other sections of the province in time for the weekend in terms of your weather it really settles down I have some showers here for terce and Prince Rupert but there's just one or two showers in there it does not expect it to be an unsettled day drying out across the north the temperatures rebounding into the low 20s again so a little warmer a little sunnier as well as across Southern BC it's trending warmer it's trending sunnier again not hot thank goodness but we don't have any precipitation to help out with the firefighters Metro Vancouver dry heading into the weekend looks lovely Saturday up to 24 degrees Sunday clouds over heads up for some rain real rain coming this way on Monday day okay us thanks very [Music] much grocery giant law blw is now settling a class action left behind during an evacuation order Angels animal rescue and Merit cares for deserted abused or orphaned pets their newest patient was caught up in the Shetland Creek Fire in the Venable Valley this is jumbo he was rescued by a group of wildfire Fighters working on the Shetland Creek fire they brought him here to Angel's animal rescue just outside of Meritt he as well as others came to us via the firefighters um their crew heat seeking unit crew they were finding these dogs as they were um fighting fire uh well he was very scared and traumatized um he was very very matted so we shaved him down looking for other burns the only Burns that we found um were his feet his feet are pretty much burnt to a crisp Jim Goff is the caretaker here Angels animal rescue is all volunteer driven and funded by donations Jim's nickname is Dr dittle because of his gentle care and compassion for animals to entice jumbo to accept treatment Jim climbs right up into the dog shelter to put jumbo at ease I'm keeping him calm I'm I'm letting him know by massaging his neck and his back I'm letting him know that he can relax and the more he relaxes the better we can treat him because he allows us to treat him um he's also got to trust us jumbo will eventually go back to his owners as many rescued animals do judana and Jim have found peace with that I think he was trying to get away from the fires and while he was trying to get away from the fires he was he was walking through coals maybe looking for his people as well because they left and the dogs were at home when when they're back home they'll be taking their dogs home with them despite his discomfort jumbo is lapping up all this attention he'll stay here at least until his wounds heal he has allowed us to do anything that we've needed to do for his well-being Shelly Joyce CBC News Meritt good people good dog thanks for being with us tonight on CBC van News at 6 you can watch this newscast on CBC GM our free app as well as on
