Second City Jayhawk Podcast (Kansas vs Lindenwood Recap)

the 2024 Kansas j-hawk season got underway last night against lyndenwood and we'll talk all about it right here on Second City jhawk so the Kansas j-hawks took the field last night in front of about a capacity crowd of 15,000 fans against the lyndenwood Lions um they came out wearing some different uniforms last night like a powder blue kind of representing maybe a different team from Kansas the Kansas City Royal is what it reminded me of and it was definitely an interesting look for them to play in those uniforms last night uh at home uh the home the home for the time being as they renovate the stadium there in Lawrence um this was the the first game in over 200 days that Jaylen Daniels stepped on the field so uh a lot of anticipation for that just t with the entire team and uh they looked ready to go uh but not right off the start um you know it was a good opening drive they had to score um there was a balanced attack uh running the ball with Devon Neil and Jaylen Danel swinging it down the field eventually the first drive ended with a 5-yard touchdown by Devon Neil and basically he didn't get touch when he went into the end zone so they went up 7 nothing um and then the next drive lyndenwood went on a nine-play drive they go on fourth down but their quarterback Nate gance was sacked uh and they ended the drive there for uh lendonwood so then Kansas would get the ball back and uh this was an interesting play uh in early in the first quarter um Jaylen danels uh did like a kind of like a reverse like a jet touch pass to Quinton Skinner and then he went for about 25 20 27 yards and then he got hit from behind he lost lost the football and as they showed the replay it looked like it might have hit the ground and it might have not it might the might the ground might have costus the fumble uh but according to the officials that they told Lance Leupold after the game uh the replay system was actually down at the time so when the fumble occurred so the turnover stood and uh so that gave the ball back to the Lions so obviously a drive that The Jayhawks could have gone and scored points ended up going back to the other team in that event and then the next drive for Kansas actually another unfortunate turnover uh looked like on that play that Jaylen D was looking for for um Luke Grim on a comeback route it looks like there's a miscommunication on that route between the two of them and uh Danel threw a costly interception and that was the second turnover of the game of the half for the j-hawks definitely not something you wanted to see uh from them early on but um it looks like they started to turn on after this Lynden would had a went three and out on the next drive and then um so on the next drive it was first down on the 26 yd line Devon Neil just took off and and gained 53 yards on a huge run and nearly uh getting to the edge of the the red zone for Lindenwood at the Lindenwood 21 yd line so a a a big run to kind of to boost this offense and get them going early on in this in the first half and um then a couple plays later Devon Neil was able to punch it in for a second TCH in the evening putting up Kansas uh 14 to nothing and then um like I said after that after that run after that run of Dev Neil like I said Kanas really started to figure it out um the next drive for lynen wood um did result in points but not for them um the third play of the drive um the quarterback threw a pass and Senior M doson jumped the route and was able to pick off the pass and take it for a 33 yard pick six um score was 20 nothing after they missed extra point but like I said that that run by deal kind of woke the offense up a big 50 plus yard run for the uh the running back for Kansas and really seemed like to get this offense going and after that that that pick six was 20 to nothing and it just seems like they kept piling on after that um the next scoring drive for Kansas uh Jaylen Daniels um really did a nice beautiful play fake and threw a 58 yard strike to Luke Grim for a touchdown putting up 27 to nothing and then they ended the half um they had a really good impressive Drive they started on their own 5 yd line and eventually uh got to the endzone with about 4 seconds left and scored uh a running touchdown with Daniel hisaw uh going up 34 nothing at halftime so the first half for me it started slow it started very slow for Kansas um a 7 nothing first quarter was not something I think fans were expecting a lot of miscommunication like I said that pass by Jaylen Daniels to to grim and the turnover by Skinner although like I said that the turnover should have been reviewed but they just couldn't do it at the time but the definitely the the pass by Daniels to To Grim was definitely a miscommunication error on the receiver and quarterback but other than that other those two blunders K just really kind of like I said got alive uh towards the end of the second quarter and really just took off uh scoring 27 points in the second quarter going up 34 nothing at halftime and the second half um they took out Daniels and Neil out of the game to give some backups playing time so their day was done uh Cole Ballard who's a red shirt freshman took the the lead in the third quarter and uh that was kind of where things went um he scored a touchdown uh by um eventually was mostly running plays on on that drive including uh a t touchdown run by uh junior Sevan Morrison um put the Jayhawks in front 41 to zero and uh yeah like I said it just the second half really the second quarter really opened up how this Kansas team is supposed to play just like dominant football every facet of the game and they really executed that last night especially in the second quarter and then uh the last the last scoring drive for the Kansas JS came in the fourth quarter uh when ballot threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to a red Shir Jr Doug Emil I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly and uh so that went 40 48 to nothing or excuse me 41 nothing um no that was 48 nothing excuse me 48 nothing the touchdown pass to Doug M was 48 nothing excuse me 48 nothing that's the touchdown throw for balard to emilin and uh yeah lyndenwood only got a field goal which was good I I mean if I guess you want to pitch a shut out you pitch a shut out but it is what it is um so they got a 34 yard field goal after a a pretty lengthy drive for the team a 14 play 75 yard Drive which took about 7 minutes off the clock um for lyndenwood so a good lengthy Drive luckily Kansas didn't allow a touchdown that that was nice for them to only good for the defense and the confidence of the defense to only allow a field goal last night and then the jks ended the game on a nine playay 41 yard Drive they ran out the rest of the clock and Kansas uh you ended the game with the ball and they wanted for their home crowd um at CH children Mercy Park 48 to3 so what I said on the podcast yesterday is that Ken need to come out and make a just a comfortable win that's what they had in the first quarter it looked like it might have been tricky cuz like I said lot a lot of offense from them um a couple miscues on offense but again they eventually found their form and turned it around and it really showed last night in that game against Lynden wood and uh yeah everything I think if you're a Jayhawk fan like myself and looking at this team with different eyes than previous years for a Kansas football team um they looked like they wanted to last night and looked like the team that we expect from them this season um especially that throw by Daniels To Grim that 58- yard bomb he threw it was a beautiful play fake and a just a show of Jaylen Daniels arm strength uh that on that play last night so you expect this team to do those things like Jaylen NE slinging the ball and Devon Neil running as much as he could he had over 100 yards last night with two touchdowns so Devon Neil really uh stepped back on the field last night and really showed why he's one of the best running backs in not the just the Big 12 but the entire country and I expect more from him and the rest of the team uh going going forward as they looked exactly like what you expect from this team all the hype surrounding them have they're ranked in the top 25 um jayen Daniels and and um Devon Neil are definitely perennial um Heisman candidates I think up there for sure so definitely the team that you expected to see we saw last night of course it's against a lesser opponent that's that's that's a given however um they looked the part last night in the game against Lindenwood at home um so Kanas outgain Lindenwood by nearly over 330 yards Lynden would only amass about 200 200 yards of offense Kansas gate a whopping 530 yards with 331 of those coming on the ground uh both teams were efficient on third down Kansas going for six of 10 on third down and lindwood went seven of 16 uh Kansas goes to Illinois next week take on the fighting line who actually they pitch a shut out themselves they pitch a shut out uh beating Eastern Illinois 45 to zero so obviously the level of competition steps up for Kansas they have to play a big 10 team who's won a game also so they're going on the road uh which is will be a game I will be attending so definitely keep tuned to this channel here uh there'll be a lot of footage from that game a lot of analysis going forward and definitely expect some really good stuff going into that game uh next week when they go to take on Illinois here in um the state so like I said kenth did what they expect was expected of them they controlled every facet of the game uh they won big uh Daniels and the only playing the first half that that should mean they're ready to go against um Illinois next week so it's a good start for jok fans in this 2024 campaign um I watched the game last night and it was very exciting to see them back on the field like I said those jerseys were very different looking for sure I expected maybe were the the red ones they debuted or something else but they were something different that I didn't expect and uh it definitely got a lot of looks and the crowd was into it the crowd really liked what that was displayed on the field so again a really good performance by by everybody on the team um starters backups everything looked like it was supposed to for this team but again they were playing a team a lesser team a team that really shouldn't have given them problems and and they really didn't for the most part I mean obviously there's some issues here and there like I said the turnovers and a couple big passes here and there but for the most part Kansas really did everything they wanted to in this game on offense and defense and uh they made good work of Lindenwood last night at home and like I said next week they were playing the Illinois fighting Ali night on the road so the schedule really starts for them now um Illinois is up next and after that UNLV and then like I said we'll go over the schedule as we go forward in the season but the season really starts for them next week I believe against Illinois so it's an opponent they should I think they should beat but it's not going to be as easy as this one I I don't see that happening but again Jaylen Daniels uh playing only half as Deon Neil as well it should definitely give them more opportunities to play next week against I think that you'll see more of them on the field this time unless it's a blowout um then they'll probably take them out for safety reasons and just you know give the backup some some playing time but I think the game against Illinois will be closer for a little bit and then I think Kansas will blow away hopefully I'm hoping but I I think again I believe in this Kansas team I I've looked enough stuff up on my own and kind of studied this Kansas team defensively offensively the coach everything the culture that Lance Leopold has BR to this team uh looks like it's something that I think you should really buy into um Kansas does play in the Big 12 so obviously they have to deal with a lot of teams like Kansas State UCF won big last night Colorado West Virginia so there are teams and you of course Utah is one of the peronal favorites to get to the 12 team playoff a lot of teams in this in this conference that they have to look out for uh for sure going forward but again a a really a really good win this evening or last night against for Kansas and it just looks like a good season for them and again going forward it just matters of the health of Jaylen Daniels he hasn't been on the field like I said in the beginning of the beginning of the podcast for over 200 days so Kansas fans were waiting for him to to get back on the field and he looked as good as advertised that's the thing about Jaylen when he's on the field he's as good as any quarterback in the country he's already up there with I believe Dylan Gabriel Carson Beck and shadar Sanders I think is the best quarterback in the country if he's on the field if he's healthy so um yeah it was a good game last night good atmosphere and I really enjoyed seeing Kansas back on the field so that's going to do it for this episode what you want to call it for today um definitely keep tuned to this channel this week uh I will be doing some coverage of the Illinois game and then obviously the game next Saturday I will be doing Vlogs and just coverage as much as I can to give you the best footage and experience and exposure of the game as I can uh but yeah I'm looking forward to it I haven't seen obviously I'm just becoming a Kansas fan this year but I'm excited I'm going to see them play live I get see Jaylen Daniels Devon Neil and that whole Squad and hopefully they put on a good performance against Illinois and come out with the win I'll be in sort of hostile environment it's not like they're playing you know Kansas State or anything or going to a rival it's just a big 10 team they're playing but I think it'll be a atmosphere either way cuz Illinois want to know also they're playing a team that's also undefeated so uh it should be a fun game and looking forward
