CTV National News | Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024: Two-party pact ends

tonight early termination the end of a two-party pact puts the prime minister in a precarious position the sudden split today I notified the Prime Minister that I've ripped up the supply and confidence agreement and the prospect of an early election breathing room for borrowers a rate cut has Canadians thinking about their next move is definitely looking into the right direction a protest takes a tumultuous turn on the streets of Winnipeg and the chaotic confrontation at a drive-thru in Ontario jolted by the price of a new electric vehicle battery the simple software fix that was nearly missed bewildered perplexed really actually that battery could cost that much plus the Corn Maze Craze it was just unbelievable having a Field Day celebrating a hockey success story CTV national news with Omar saaden good evening everyone we begin tonight with the acrimonious political breakup between the NDP and the Liberals and whether the split could send Canadians to the polls in a snap election the fact is in a video posted on social media today jug meet Singh said the Prime Minister and his minority government are quote too weak and selfish late tonight Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party sent an email to supporters using the news to fund raise and accusing sing of quote abandoning Progressive policies the deal was supposed to last until next June but now that it's dead what does it mean ctv's Judy Tren explains I've ripped up the supply and confidence agreement Justin Trudeau's proven again and again he will always cave to corporate green jug Singh is pulling the plug on propping up the Liberals 10 months before the deal was supposed to expire that means the NDP will no longer provide blanket support for the minority government on confidence votes leaving the Prime Minister on Shaky Ground I am not focused on politics I'll let other parties focus on politics I'm focused on actually delivering the things that Canadians told me this summer they need since signing the supply and confidence agreement in 2022 the NDP has pushed the Liberals to create a national Dental Care Program partial pharmacare and enshrined $10 a day Child Care into law jug meet sing's personal numbers haven't materially moved over the course of this parliamentary Arrangement so yeah maybe it's a moral Victory from a policy perspective but it sure ain't a political Victory polls show the conservatives continue to soar while the new Democrats are falling further behind the stalling liberals the Liberals have let people down they don't deserve another chance two upcoming byelections Will test if the gamble pays off in Winnipeg and Montreal and DP candidates were facing constant questions from constituents about backing the Liberals the ndps say they decided to break the deal before Pierre PV called them out last week the conservatives planed to challenge sing's resolve when Parliament resume after salout Singh did this stunt today he is going to have to vote on whether he keeps Justin Trudeau's costly government in power or whether he triggers a carbon tax election Parliament resumes on September 16th the same day as the byelections in Montreal and Winnipeg not only will they be seen as a referendum on Justin Trudeau they'll also be seen as a test of jug meet sing's leadership as well Omar all right Judy thank you let's bring in ctv's Chief political correspondent vashy Capello vashy walk us through jug me sing's political motivation for making this declaration now what's in it for him one word Omar distance he wants to create as much distance between himself and the Prime Minister as possible in the leadup to those byelections that Judy talked about just the two weeks that are left but more importantly and more significantly for him in the leadup to the next federal election what's going to be really interesting to watch though is how he navigates doing that in Parliament because he's going to be facing guaranteed various confidence motions and he's going to have to decide on a case-by Case basis does he do what he said in his video today and sort of match his actions with his words calling the government weak and selfish or does he vote in line with the government as he has been and create an even harder line to toe going forward that's what I'm going to be watching for something a lot of people will be watching when the house resumes the move certainly a blow for the liberal minority government pushing the prime minister to make new alliances what's Justin Trudeau's game plan now well everyone I talked to in and around the Prime Minister and in the Liberals had no no idea Omar that this was coming so they're stunned right now I don't think they have a game plan at this point but they do have some options ahead of them including bringing in a confidence motion themselves calling the ndp's bluff as they did back in 2021 I'm told that's up for a possibility that's up for a discussion but right now they're going to have to navigate a very different Parliament a very different political climate there could be an election way sooner than later and given their electoral fortunes right now that's not great news for them Omar all right bashy thank you the Bank of Canada lowered its key interest straight again today a moderate cut of 25 basis points many are now looking ahead to the final two rate cuts of the year next month and in December to see if the central bank takes a more aggressive approach ctv's Mike latur reports my favorite part about the kitchen is this Herring bone backsplash Denise for leisure has been trying to get into ottawa's hot housing market for about a year today's rate cut will help I think it's exciting that they're considering lowering the the rates um I still for my own situation I don't think they're low enough um but it's definitely looking into the right direction this is the third consecutive time the central bank has lowered the key lending rate since June dropping it to 4 and a qu% outside of the pandemic it's the first time we've had a trio of cuts since the global financial crisis in 2009 Tiff mckam says while overall inflation is easing on average Canadians are spending a quarter of their income on housing very hard to get 2% inflation when a quarter of your basket a necessity is running uh that high so we're going to need to see some further easing Canada's unemployment rate Rose to 6.4% over the summer helping to get inflation closer to the 2% Target the bank wants to hit if you look at it on a three-month average basis the unemployment rate has moved up but again this reflects the fact that we've had such a significant increase in our labor force while some economists say the last two rate cuts did little to Kickstart the housing market Realtors expect this cut to give the market a slight bump I think that may be a little more feverish than it would have been uh but going forward it it's going to be a good thing for the demand side the governor of the Central Bank says a half percentage point cut was discussed before settling on one quarter but he hasn't ruled it out for the next time they make a decision in October Omar all right Mike thank you and joining us now is BN Bloomberg's Amanda Lang Amanda we've seen these cascading Cuts over the past few months and a lot of people are wondering how low the rate will go and how long it will take to get there the rate cut today of course was no surprise a weak economy and also inflation that has been cooling meant that it was sort of baked in and the Central Bank confirmed that rates are going to continue to go lower the question of course is as you say when do they get where they're going to get and on that the bank really is still being cautious it's basically saying it's going to wait for the data to come in just as when go up it takes time for the rate cut to work its way through the economy there will be some immediate benefit of course to people who are pricing their credit off of that immediate rate but for things like the housing market it can take a little bit more time and one thing the bank does seem to be sure about it does not want Canadians making decisions based on rates they think might happen a lot can change they want us to wait and see what the rates actually are Omar before we get out there and make any big decisions all right Amanda thank you two terrifying and apparently random attacks in downtown Vancouver during the morning commute have left one man dead and another with a gruesome injury police swarmed the area and made an arrest with the help of a 911 caller and a drone ctv's BC bureau chief Andrew Johnson reports a bloody towel and a body under a police tent Mark a dark morning in downtown Vancouver it's deeply disturbing to think that something like this can happen in our community first police say a man in his 50s was randomly attacked in front of this church he suffered knife wounds to the head and his hand was cut off this gentleman was taken to hospital with his hand and as far as how that's playing out I don't know what the um the doctors have been able to do with that 8 minutes later two blocks away a second attack the victim a man in his 70s his injury is described as gruesome and fatal the city's ninth homicide of the year more than an hour later 2 kilometers away a 911 caller reported a man who matched the suspect's description behaving erratically and yelling at a stranger police had launched multiple drones in their Search and say one of them was nearby we had a drone respond there who that was actually close by right away and picked up the suspect immediately police say the man taken into custody is on probation after multiple previous convictions a guy described by vpd's Chief as very troubled there are many people that we have compassion for have mental health issues that we want to see get help and get on a better path but there are also people with mental health issues who are extremely dangerous that we need to be afraid of and we need to have institutionalized there's too many unwell people walking around in our streets both the police chief and Vancouver's mayor are calling for more support to fight mental illness and addiction from senior levels of government Andrew Johnson CTV News Vancouver and late tonight in Calgary a community bonded in shared grief we know the color of the Jersey didn't even matter we were always cheering for you let our chance Echo so loudly the boys can hear it in the SC a powerful Candlelite vision honoring former nhlr Johnny GD and his brother Matthew killed last week in New Jersey they were struck by a suspected impaired driver while riding bicycles the night before their sister's wedding ctv's Kathy Lee is outside the Saddle Dome Arena tonight and Cathy it's all just so heartbreaking Matthew's wife who is pregnant with a couple's first child posting just a few days ago that she will keep going for him and their unborn son how are the two men being remembered tonight Omar they're being remembered as more than just two people who played amazing hockey this vigil tonight incredibly emotional as you can imagine it's over now however there are lots of fans that are still standing around looking at the memorial looking at the momentos that have been dropped off here for Johnny and his brother Matthew you know tonight there were lots of Tears Of course uh because of how tragic this all is but but there were also a lot of laughs because members of the Flames organization shared some really great stories about Johnny g off the ice how he liked to be comfy all the time in sweats he liked to play soccer he loved pasta things like that and you know you could hear in the clip earlier that the audience erupted in laughter so it wasn't just all somber um there was levity tonight as well which I think is important for this community because of how important Johnny GD was to C and he still is um this vigil is going to be here for 13 days a nod to the number 13 on his jersey back to you Omar a sea of tributes there behind you such devastating losses all right Kathy thank you for this tonight the grief was also shared South of the Border tonight his most recent team the Columbus Blue Jackets also held a candlelight vigil for their former [Music] star hundreds gathered out side Nationwide Arena where Johnny GD played for the past three seasons a demonstration took a dangerous turn on the streets of Winnipeg the driver of this car plowed through protesters blocking an intersection and also hit a cyclist before being swarmed I was hit by the car I stepped out of the way before he could do any more damage the cyclist says her bike was run over as the driver sped away but the car was quickly stopped by protesters who jumped on top of the car smashing in the windshield trying to grab the driver others intervened breaking up the confrontation before police arrived protesters were demanding answers in the death of a woman fatally struck by a police cruiser at a homeless encampment earlier this week a wild getaway attempt and dramatic police Tak down at a Tim Horton's drive-thru in Miss Saga Ontario [Applause] shocking surveillance video shows police pointing a gun at a suspect in a stolen Ford Bronco trying to escape you can see the Bronco mounting the cruiser an officer frantically rolling out onto the pavement to avoid getting crushed Witnesses capturing the chaos on their phones the cops tased them broke the window and they tased them if he gets away from them he's going to do some serious damage to people that were standing around because he wanted to get away it was crazy it was just a scene out of a movie to be honest how the driver was trying to jump over the cop car with his Bronco remarkably no one was injured three police cruisers were damaged fresh into the school year chaos in confusion erupted with a mass shooting at a high school about an hour east of Atlanta two teachers and two students were killed and nine others injured a 14-year-old student here at the high school again he has been taken into custody uh he is he will be charged with murder and he will be tried as an adult you could hear the gun fires right down the hall so I was shaking scared I thought I was going to die no word on a possible motive a death trap was the term used today to describe the London highrise that caught fire seven years ago killing 72 people a damning report reveals Decades of failures by industry regulators and the government prompting an apology from the British prime minister ctv's Heather Wright reports deregulation and dishonesty that's what led to the 2017 fire that engulfed London's Grenville Tower according to a report released today a Litany of cut Corners dishonest sales practices and lack regulation turned the public housing block into a death trap killing 72 people the government ignored warnings about dangerous cling from a early as 1991 it knew the risk but failed to prevent them we find the nearly 1700 page report says the local Council installed combustible cladding on the exterior of the building as a way to cut costs cladding that was purchased from suppliers who knew it should not be used in high-rise buildings we discovered that there had been systematic systematic dishonesty on the part of Manufacturers involving deliberate manipulation of the testing processes today Britain's prime minister apologized it should never have happened the country failed to discharge its most fundamental duty to protect you and your loved ones the report compiled after a nearly 7-year public inquiry including a painstaking reconstruction of how each of the 72 victims died their family members hope the findings will open the door to criminal prosecution what we demand we are demanding Justice for these lives police will now look at the inquiry's findings and decide whether to lay any charges which could include corporate or individual manslaughter that is expected to take between 12 and 18 months adding more time to an already long and painful process Omar all right Heather thank you coming up bewildered dumbfounded I guess uh perplexed really at that actually battery could cost that much an electric vehicle nightmare sparking a valuable lesson plus a walk through hockey's Field of [Music] Dreams as more Canadians consider moving to electric vehicles new questions tonight about dealerships and their abilities to repair EVS one Ontario man was shocked to find the price tag of replacing his battery was more than the car itself a far cheaper fix wasn't even offered to him until ctv's Pat forign stepped in they call me and say it needs a battery Charles Jackal of Orangeville bought a used 2018 Chevy Volt hybrid three years ago at 161,000 kilm it was just outside of warranty when it quit working the car right now is a paper wait it's been sitting at that dealership since December Jackal paid $20,000 for the car and was shocked to be told replacing the battery will cost him over $33,000 I actually felt sack because at that point in time you know I was bewildered dumbfounded I guess uh perplexed really at that actually that battery could cost that much the battery's heavier but you don't have an engine up front true Chris mir's an autom motive professor at Centennial College here he's giving a refresher course to faculty about some of the safety requirements needed when working on electric cars the college is updating its curriculum to teach mechanics about EV repairs there's probably been a bit of a a drought of training for electric vehicles particularly in the aftermarket M says EVS require a new set of skills for mechanics and those used to working on combustion engines without proper training could misdiagnose repairs especially in case of software updates if you miss that bulletin for the vehicle software update you have a chance to spend the customer's money unwisely on something that didn't need to be replaced when Jackal contacted us we reached out to General Motors on his behalf and a spokesperson said the team is working with the customer to resolve this issue in the end jackal's car did not need a new $33,000 battery it just required a software update which GM looked at after and now jackal's Chevy vault is back on the road larger dealerships are more likely to have EV Specialists on staff there are also ongoing training courses offered by colleges and manufacturers to help train mechanics to work on EVS Omar all right Pat thank you still ahead a bear Cub's wild ride across Ontario [Music] a wild road trip for two men in a black bear cup is prompting a warning from Wildlife officials the men found the bear on the road in Northern Ontario and thought it was injured so they drove it back home with them to Windsor 10 hours away police got involved and called a local wildlife rescue group uh the bear was quite lethargic uh very scar shared um I should mention he was fed Taco Bell so I'm sure his uh his iners weren't feeling so great neither and um he was just really stressed the bear is doing well and has been returned up north officials are reminding people to seek help if they find an injured animal and not to take it for a ride after the break a hockey corn maze celebrating an amazing accomplishment [Music] a farm in New Brunswick has come up with a creative way to pay tribute to a local sports success story here's ctv's Sarah Plowman in the heart of this Farm an idea sprouted carve the crop into a maze to celebrate a hockey team that carves out its place in history they weren't just the best team they were just The Head and Shoulders above everybody else last season the University of New Brunswick men's hockey team went undefeated all year when they hoisted the cop it planted the seed for the hunter Brothers to use their six acres to Crown the champions in a canvas of corn they won every game and they and they weren't scored upon I mean it was just unbelievable from above you can see the unb Red's 43 and0 record their University Cup and the head coach who led them and has retired from the team Gardner McDougall did a great job even coach Max mustache was done out pretty nice so it all takes planning and Imagination and here it's tradition for 24 years the hunter Brothers have transformed their plot to celebrate Canadian icons like Gordon Lightfoot and Stan Rogers and Terry Fox taking out the corn is the trickiest part and the more detail you have the trickier it becomes you'll likely not get lost but you may have to turn around scattered throughout there are 10 trivia questions about the team it makes it more interesting to the Reds it all captures a hockey highlight you know opening social media yesterday and seeing that was a surprise but something that we're all pretty excited about a Victory lap to wander through Sarah Plowman CTV News Florenceville Bristol New Brunswick it looks pretty great that's a snapshot of this Wednesday for all of us at CTV national news thank you for watching good night and see you tomorrow for [Music]
