Raiders QB Conundrum: A Call to Ryan Tannehill?

okay Mo the quarterback stuff uh it's really interesting because I'm watching uh not only the national media but of course the media who covers the Raiders there in Las Vegas the beat writers who we all know really well and then of course uh Raider Nation the fans and it's a very interesting Dynamic happen we we talked about it last show on Tuesday where people seem disappointed and that their expectations for the team for some not all again this is not like everybody in Raider Nation is suddenly negative but there is a lot of the fan base that I've sensed over the last few days as I've talked to them online that are now more uncertain about this team heading in and I think it's fair to maybe be more cautiously optimistic than just wholeheartedly optimistic thinking that this team is going to win 11 12 games or something like that but um what do you make of that what do you make of the uncertainty I I don't know why and I guess I shouldn't say this but no I should say it this way the UN the unknown with the quarterback position was well known for those of us who cover the team for fans too I know a lot of fans looking at the positive they're not looking at the negatives but uh it almost seems as though this came as a surprise to people that maybe they weren't completely solid at quarterback what do you make of that I'm a little confused by that part of the discussion regardless of who won the quarterback competition the Raiders were going to go into the 2024 season with a low-end starter whether they chose eighton okon or Garner muu you were choosing the best of two lowend starters so I said this and I'll say it again my expectations for the Raiders wouldn't have changed either way whether they named Garner muu which they did or Aden o conell the starting quarterback my expectations are the same because you know whoever started was going to have to was going to have to have the help of the pass catchers the offensive line the Run game and the defense to uplift that team because the quarterback isn't going to be the reason the Raiders win a bunch of games in 2024 if they do win a bunch of games so my expectations don't change so I I'm confused about I think a lot of people are disappointed that their choice for the starting quarterback wasn't Chosen and a lot of times what you see not just within rer Nation but fan bases across the NFL if a team or GM or front office does not make the choices that the that they think should have been made they begin to doubt the direction how well the team is going to play because a lot of people think they're right about their own evaluation so I think it's more of a personal thing where you thought a no conell was the better quarterback and the Raiders are choosing the lesser of two quarterbacks so now you're you know you're disappointed and discouraged and you're thinking this team is going to crash and burn now you as you said Scott that's not everyone but I I get that sense from a lot of people who were on the a noon side of this yeah I saw some of your interactions with some of those folks online which was interesting to say the least uh and some folks getting animated about it saying well why do you know more than the coaches do our good friend Q over at raidar Nation radio was saying okay so you think that the coaches the GM everybody doesn't know what they're doing but you do so it you and evaluating the position and what's interesting is this note on our last show we talked a lot about matchups and how Gardner mshu starting the season for the Raiders made sense from that perspective of starting fast and in the second segment by the way we're going to go into that and the Raiders because I believe the the key to the season for this Raiders team and Antonio Pierce mentioned it after the game the other night is that first four games of the season so when you look at those four games of the Season what do you need to do to get off to your fastest start does that mean Gardner muu is the starting quarterback in week 14 no what it means is Antonio Pierce The Brain Trust of the Raiders if you will wants to get off to a fast start and they believe that guardner minu will give them that my contention is and we'll talk about this as well is that maybe they also I know they sign Nathan Peterman Mo but Ryan tanah Hill's out there there's been a lot of folks on the national stage and I'm not saying today that I'm advocating for it wholeheartedly but if you start to look at this quarterback situation uh what are you going to do if you're the Raiders and both of these guys just can't get it done it's a possibility they mo both might get it done they both might not get it done or play well enough for you to stay in games you should stay in and if so the only guy that's really out there worth anything and I know he's on the downside not saying he's a long-term answer but is a Ryan tanah Hill somebody like that just so you have another insurance insurance policy but I just it it's indicative of something I think we all knew going into the season at least those of us who looked at it objectively which was the Raiders don't have their quarterback yet and I'm sorry but ad no Connell is not going to be a franchise guy and we already know Gardner mchu is not Gardner mchu is what he is and that's okay he comes in he wins two or three games he reminds me of Ryan Fitzpatrick in that way he has good stretches and that's great it's a good valuable piece to have but this whole question about the quarterback position Mo it's not going to be answered this year uh we're going into another season and then another offseason where it'll be a big question mark Scott I don't know how far how deep we're gonna get into this but I just want to say this right off the top and I'm gonna be strong about this yeah the Raiders in Ryan 10 he'll make zero sense yep Z zero sense one because if Garner menu stinks in the first quarter of the Season you give Aidan oconnell the ball and say okay Aidan lonell let if you got that upside that Antonio Pierce talked about remember when Antonio Pierce made his announcement his decision he said a few things he said one he told them both to be ready just both be ready right so that means a no Ks are next in line anyway the other thing is he said that adal conell has tremendous upside he said tremendous upside so if he really believes that then you put adal con then you see how much upside he has and if AAL conell doesn't have the upside you think he has at that point the rers are probably two and six anyway so what is the point of of then signing a Ryan tanah Hill who's 36 years old on the downside of his career and oh by the way he's injury-prone he's missed more than 10 games over the last two years there is absolutely no point in bringing in a Ryan tanah Hill if your team is in a dumpster just go out there what did we talk about in the last show Scott What teams do when they're quote unquote tanking they say okay we're gonna let the young guys play we're going to develop our young guys if you're two and six and a o Connell and and Garena have both crapped the bed by midseason you're not signing Ryan tanah Hill you're thinking okay this is a Lost season we're gonna get a top five pick we're gonna throw out our our whoever whatever third string quarterback we got or we ride it out with aen lonnell and we get our quarterback next year you're not signing a 36 year old quarterback Ryan tanah Hill who's not who's who's not much better than what you have already well so so let me let me take the other side of that though and let me ask ask you these questions number one is let's say this Raiders team because there's there's a big question mark up front on on the offensive line of course the Raiders got good news this earlier this week when Jackson po Johnson was taken off the pup list of course Colton Miller's back so even though jpj hasn't played at all he is practicing he doesn't have the red shirt on he can have contact so at least he's getting closer for the Raiders to put him there at at left guard but if you look at this team let's say that that gel's up front and the defense is what we think it can be which is a top tier defense and these Raiders go out and they are in games and they are losing games because of quarterback turnovers missplays whatever it may be so if you're there and the team's not terrible they're not they might have a losing record but they are they are a a consistent quarterback away from winning those games you got a coach on a two-year contract so I I understand what you're saying and I'm not arguing that Ryan tanah Hill as I said earlier is the answer for anything but at some point then what do you do if you're so close in games if this team really makes a jump except for that position and that position is costing you games what do you do then you trade you trade for a better quarterback or a younger quarterback so the Cleveland Browns are reportedly taking calls for Dorian Thompson Robinson who had an impressive preseason last year I'd rather Dorian Thompson Robinson at least he has upside more upside than Ryan tenah Hill I'm not I'm sorry Scott I don't care how bad it gets or how good it is or how dire it is that the Raiders need a quarterback if the rest of their team is playing well I'm not signing Ryan Ryan tenah Hill Ryan ten Hill had four touchdown passes in eight in 10 games last year yeah more interceptions touch yeah Ryan tenah Hill hasn't been a good quarterback since the year 2020 Scott it's been for four years We R the ryano conversation needs it's out there that's why I brought it up it it needs to die I trade for Doran Thompson Robinson Cleveland Browns again are reportedly taking calls for him Josh dos he's a backup in San Francisco call Josh dos what about what about a Tyler hinek in Atlanta if if Atlanta's willing because they got I don't like the T Tyler Hani the Taylor Hani idea because he his problem last year with the falas he was turning the ball over he so if you're a team that has a good defense and you're saying we need to play our defense don't turn the ball you don't want to go Scott really quick yes Dorian Thompson Robinson call the Cleveland Browns even if he's not it he has some upside he's mobile I would even go after Josh dos for for a handful of games he he was playing pretty well I would if you I would prefer Josh dos I know Josh dos isn't great because he got benched eventually but I would take Josh dos over Ryan tanhill there there're just so many other backup options I would go to before I'm even thinking about signing Ryan tanah Hill at 36 years old coming off the season before touchdown passes yeah and I'm I'm there with you as well I rather go that younger route especially if there's not a lot of compensation involved if you can do it relatively cheaply and I don't know what a Duran Thompson what he would cost we'll see it but now of course the Raiders have to be in in that unfortunate position to even think about this so I know some of you will be bothered by the the fact that we're even discussing it but I think it has to be discussed because this position the quarterback position is going to be something of a question mark all season long which is why Mo and I have both said both these guys will start games it's just a matter of when and where they're at when that happens and uh so it'll be be interesting all right we're GNA take our first break uh because obviously this is our show that goes on the radio in Las Vegas as well we're going to take our first break when we come back from that break we're going to talk about the Raiders and getting off to a fast start and why it's so important and why the quarterback position is part of that and maybe just maybe I think so why Gardner mchu won out despite not being the clear winner against Aiden o Connell when it on uh Sunday when when when Antonio Pierce decided and told the world that he had decided to go with Garder mshu to start the season for the Raiders at qb1 that it was important for this team to get off to a quick start and he talked about breaking the season as many coaches do up in two quarters you know first four games and we know we've talked about it on the show many times that that first four games the first two games particularly difficult Chargers on the road I know everybody wants to say that they're going to beat the Chargers they always do but still a tough game on the road for your first one coming out then you got to go all the way to the east coast and take on the Baltimore Ravens who were of course the game away from the the the Super Bowl so you look at that and you say okay yeah you guys need to get off to a quick start what's realistic I think realistic is two and two and I think that's the bottom if you go below two and two you go one and three or 0 and four God forbid then I think this Raiders team will be in trouble early going three in one is it possible yeah but I wouldn't get too excited about it with the the unknowns that we have but when you look at this start Mo the the selection of minshu makes so much sense because of the fact that Antonio Pierce knows that so much of what's going to happen in 2024 could be this this could be the springboard or this is the this is the pothole that they step in at the beginning of the season so I said this a few shows ago I said you don't want to go into the season where things aren't looking too good and you go here we go again we're going to be mediocre again or we're gonna you know we're going to start slow again like we did last year underc Daniels just different coach this time so I understand from the Viewpoint you do want to start quickly especially with the tough opponents you have particularly on the defensive side of the ball you mentioned but I I I think with my early predictions I believe I had the Raiders starting off at three and one if I recall that correctly and and I said that you know with the Chargers it's going to be a physical football game I think that's going to be a close game because I think the the for the Chargers going to be physical be physical and run the football which AK dobins a gus Edwards not because the Raiders preseason run defense was bad it's because the way the Chargers are built offensively their best wide receivers is maybe Josh Palmer or lad makoni who's a rookie so they're gonna run the ball a lot and I felt like with a new offense a lot of change in Los Angeles the Raiders will be able to get that game because at least the Raiders have an identity under Antonio Pierce now it gets tougher I think they Dro that game to Baltimore and then they should beat the Carolina Panthers I'm not overlooking the car Panthers but they should beat the Carolina Panthers and I've said this over and over again that Deshawn Watson is not the same player he was with the Houston Texans and the Cleveland Browns didn't start to their offense really didn't start to percolate until Joe Flaco got in there Joe Flaco's in Indie now and Nick chub by the way doesn't have a timetable for return so they don't have their top running back Deshawn Watson's play has been very spotty in Cleveland the Raiders could very well win that game as well so the way I look at it is with Gardner muu you know what your offense is going to look like right away gar mit's a veteran you're going to see right away what your offense is going to be for the for the season whereas a no Connell as I said he's still going to make those mistakes and those mistakes could have cost you games early so for the Raiders I think there's a good chance two- two three and one both very reasonable now they dropped that first game to the charges I still think two and two is very reasonable yeah and I think I think you you look at the Carolina Panthers obviously the first home game of the season at a legion Stadium on the 22nd of September I agree with you there and and by the way I know it's just preseason I get it but they look awful the Carolina Panthers although the quarterback's gotten better so that's good for him but the Browns deshun Watson you talked and I agree with you because we said that a couple shows ago I think the Browns and I was talking about it on a sports not NFL show about the Browns really their season much like the Raiders hinges on how that quarterback does deshun Watson's looks very good in Camp better than he's looked since he's come back from all the issues he had so I think that Browns game on the road um excuse me at home is going to be tough because that one you just don't know who you're GNA get that defense is good in Cleveland so I agree with you I'm I'm at the two and two state if they come out of it two and two I'm feeling pretty Dam good about where the Raiders are if they come out of it at one and three I'm really concerned I don't think 0 and four is in the cards but one and three would not be good two and two would be fine and three and one would be spectacular so I I just think though that that that the emphasis that that he is putting that Antonio Pierce is putting on the first part of the Season went into the quarterback decision and for those of you who are really rooting for Aiden oconnell to get the job eventually and and and to to to learn and get better then yes I could think it but again mchu with all that he has issues with he's just a little more athletic I'll put it that way that does not mean he has a better arm athletic and having a bigger arm are not the same things and so it makes a lot of sense but to get off we'll see if the strategy that this coaching staff and the GM Tom Tesco have come up with for this first four games of the Season work out if it doesn't work out then you're gonna see Aden o Connell and then the Raiders season will be sort of H in a position of okay where do we go from here because if if minu doesn't do well in the first four games that means the Raiders probably are not sitting at two and two they might be sitting at one and three and if that's the case then there's a whole set of decisions to make whole set of decisions to make I would say the season still even at one three I wouldn't say the season still lost because Denver right after that and you got Pittsburgh and you know the Raiders have had Denver's numbers not say they're gonna definitely sweep them this year but you got to be feeling confident of you know even going on a road to Denver being that you you've had their number and then the Pittsburgh Steelers their quarterback situation still you know Justin Fields you know Russell Wilson hasn't looked great in preseason I know he only had one preseason game he's been dealing with a calf injury that off offense isn't going to be that explosive so even if you're one and three The Season's not lost I think what you're doing is you're saying okay how does Gardner menu look you know do do I don't think you pull him at that point because I think you want to give him several games I think Antonio Pierce a lot of people want to say Antony pce is Gonna Roll with the quarterback he chose for the rest of the season I think when he made his announcement it was pretty clear that he let he cracked the dopen for flexibility to change his mind if possible because I know a lot of people were saying well Mo he he said his decision is going to be final and I and I and I we said this that if a quarterback starts turning the ball over yeah you you're gonna you're gonna you're going to make a change things happen during the season where you're gonna have to be flexible with some of the things that you've said so he he did crack the door up before change as I said he told both quarterbacks to be ready well and I as I said he broke the season down into quarters with the one extra game on that back end by the way but if you look at that to me I think his decision is final for the first four games right but the first four games right and then you because you can't you can't give somebody one game or two games and then pull them unless it's just so horrifically bad which I don't expect so I would anticipate that yeah unless something goes really wrong or there's some kind of injury that you're going to see Gardner minu through those first four games and then the coaching staff and listen they reassess every week but with a quarterback and with an offense and and and a new offense and a new offensive coordinator you got to take some time to gel too it's not like they're going to come out of the gate on fire and be the number one office in the NFL it's going to take some time so I think you have to give the quarterback some Grace there like you said unless he if he goes out in the first game and throws six interceptions ah you don't get sit after one game I don't believe but you never know because you can't turn the ball over in the NFL and expect to win so it'll be interesting but I just think that that fast start and and and this this this Raider team I think it's it's a difficult difficult task but if they can go on the road two weeks in a row and win especially in Baltimore then you start talking about momentum and I think early season momentum like that would be huge for minu at quarterback but also for this Raiders team all the way around Scott not to get too far ahead of myself ourselves here but I know we're talking about the first quarter of the season and I mentioned Denver and Pittsburgh being the first you know part of that first six weeks of the season I think the first six week six weeks six weeks of the season are most important for the Raiders because if you look get after after those six games like a okay after the Broncos and Steelers the Raiders have to play the Rams the Chiefs the Bengals and the Dolphins those four games in a row tough nuggets so the Raiders I think you gotta you have to three and three may not even be great for the Raiders with that slate after it so I would if I'm the Raiders I want to come out with the winning record after the first six weeks of the season four and two because you know know there that that stretch that I just WR out to you Rams Chiefs Bengals Dolphins you know that's going to be tough and you're gonna have to steal one or two of those games to stay in the playoff HT at least mid-season so I I think that also looking ahead plays into why you want a fast start I agree and and if you look at it too this is this is really big too for the for the folks out there ridar Nation who really want to see this team get to the playoffs this year that you look at that early schedule right until they get they have the the Panthers are NFC and then they not until the Rams again are they playing an NFC team the rest of them are AFC teams so even if they're out of division those are those are big games because if you're jockeying for 10 wins to get in the playoffs if that's what it's going to take then you need to win within your conference and so so those games are big so I mean yes I don't think they lose to the Panthers but a Panthers loss if they win in Baltimore doesn't mean anything really you got to look at those AFC games this year especially early in that schedule how stacked it is with some of those teams that look to be in the same position or better than the Raiders as far as going for either a division uh title or for a wild card slot so that's another reason why Mo those first six weeks are so important well I could say this Scott and we can probably go with a positive note as we yeah close out the segment the Raiders actually Raiders offense got some good news C Miller's off the pup list so they they have their starart left tack tackle back uh jpj shed his uh red non- contct jersey I saw over Twitter at practice so it looks like their offensive line is starting to get healthy the biggest question of the offensive line and I pointed this out in my sports night piece on Tuesday is who starts at right tackle I I think DJ glaze has made a push and if B mford isn't you know 75% healthy maybe the rers feel more comfortable with with DJ glaze at right tackle we'll see how that turns out but it's good to know that if they mord doesn't pan out that you can throw out DJ DJ glaze and see what he has and see what upside he can bring to the right Tackle Spot absolutely uh and and I think Munford you're right I think he is consensus the guy that's going to go as long as he's healthy if he's not healthy if they have any question on whether he can do the role then it might be better to put DJ glaze in there we'll see we got we got we got one more game to go here and then we have the two and a half weeks until the regular season start and there's a lot for the Raiders to decide and a lot to talk about between now and then all right get it but very very good I mean it's all three aspects of the game you got to win in all three aspects and the Raiders in the in the uh special teams area have been great especially with the new kickoff now when the new kickoff thing keeping that new kickoff if go into the regular season I don't know why anybody would let him return the ball I think there's gonna be a lot of touchbacks again because it's been successful it's gone up by 7.8 yards per return in the preseason so we'll see what happens there's some strategy there see if the NFL can stay ahead of that I don't know all right we're first going to go out to Anthony in Idaho he hasn't called in the wild but here's Anthony in Idaho on the Raider Nation mailbag hey guys this is Anthony calling in from Idaho Falls been a minute um I just wanted to say real quick first of all you know I go on Twitter and you know after the quarterback decision I'm thinking oh God how bad can it get and you know you would think that if you would think that we just benched Patrick Mahomes for Chad Henny or something you know like come on like they're about the same quarterback A mconnell and G muu they're about the same levels of quarterback play different quarterbacks but about the same results I don't see the outrage even if I was more of an ad noal guy myself but not by very much and so when I heard the garami thing I was like all right well you know makes sense the veteran guy he's started a lot of games and has played at least pretty well at times and I feel like that counts for something as opposed to someone like Aiden no Connell who you know doesn't have a ton of experience he has starts under his belt but you know he had some improvements to make and it probably do him some good to some on the bench for a while and yeah I don't know I just don't think it's so egregious um I think I'm with Mo you know my prediction stays about the same I'd say about seven eight wins maybe N9 to 10 depending on a couple things that may happen during the season um yeah also we we were missing our top receiver couple of our starting linemen so I'm not too worried yet um I think we'll be okay especially if our defense can play well maybe better than what they have been in the preseason but yeah I just think uh everyone just needs to calm down a little bit and take a breath we haven't even we haven't even finished the third we haven't even started the third preseason game yet so yeah let's check a chill field thanks guys talk to you soon all right there's Anthony with a sober look at the quarterback situation and and I don't disagree with him but I want to I'll give you my answer in a minute mode but I want to hear why why do you think there at least some again I don't want to paint this as some 70% of Raider fans are freaking out about it because Anthony's right I mean when you're on X it's it's hyperbolic and it's a it's a bubble there's a lot of fans who don't even go on there okay that listen to the show that watch us on YouTube and all they don't even go on there because of the toxicity and all that stuff but when you look at how the reaction is mo why do you think it is that way I said it in the first segment it it's a lot of times you think that you know who should start and you know better than the coaching staff and if they don't pick your guy then you're upset about it I think part of it is just people are upset that Antonio Pearson company didn't pick their guy because as as Anthony from Idaho said and I said it in the first segment the difference between Aon o Connell and Garner muu isn't significant so if your if your if your expectations of the Raiders offense dramatically Chang between Garner Mitch and conell I don't know what quarterbacks you've been watching yeah Gardner muu has been a Fillin starter for his a backup SL a lowend starter for his career a noon's played 11 football games so the you're you're choosing between again two low end starting quarterbacks regardless of what the choice was so the expectations shouldn't swing that much I think when you go on X Twitter and you mentioned it it's just a lot of fans are are disappointed in the decision so they want to draw attention to themselves and and and throw out these wild predictions oh the ra is only gonna win four games now with with DAR Vu it's not like as he said it's not like they were benching some future Hall of Famer Surefire that you know they they benched one lowend starting signic cor for another and you're hoping that the veteran experience helps you get off to a good start which which is a point of view I I can understand yeah and I would say this too real quickly two items on this one is I think part of it is well-meaning Raider fans even if they're thinking negatively right now well-meaning Raider fans who just want the answer at quarterback already right so so they look at Aiden oconnell they say this is a young guy menchu's been around you know who he is and what he does but you saw some flashes of and so I think there's that hope right that is there um I don't see it as much as they do because I just I think that if if Jimmy Garoppolo stayed healthy last year I know stay with me on this if he would have stayed healthy last year and had an average year Aiden okell probably wouldn't have played at all so I don't think that Aiden okon is great as he did in the preseason I don't think that that Aiden oconnell that you should put all your chips in on Ain no call good kid will be a good NFL quarterback I believe as somebody who can come in and spot start for you but I think that's part of the issue there is people are doing that and then number two is it just reminds them that they couldn't take care of the problem this year and move up in the draft and of course Shawn pyton rubbing it in with Bo Knicks looking good we saw that this week too but but anyway go ahead Mo you have something else really quick Scott if a oon has showed the upside that a lot of fans think he has he would have been starting viig taer wrote in the athletic that the Raiders were waiting to see that upside at an eight and no Connell at these practices and in the preseason and they just didn't see enough of it Point Blank period yep that's it all right now we go to our good friend MDM always watching us on YouTube by the way he's out in Hawaii and we're gonna go to him here he is hey what's up Aloha Scott and mo I gotta say you guys compliment each other well you guys do a good show together I think you both uh make each other better uh just want a quick followup uh you know I know you said don't bring up the pack Ascot but when you've been a Raider fan like me for most of my life uh actually my entire life really uh you just you start getting an instinct and you know I'm not going to go back too much into the St thing but we knew hey you need a quarterback we got rid a Carr trade up for Stout and I don't understand our decision making I mean you're GNA go into this that year we got garoo as an option I mean give me a break we all knew that wasn't going to be a good thing but for some reason they did they take Tyreek Wilson we all knew that's not going to be a good pick but that's what they did and then uh this year's plan is to go with menu or a conell now we're gonna go with muu I don't think that's a good plan either and I'm frustrated quite frankly as a Raider fan because year after year you're hoping for the next year and the next year continues to be like the last year and I'm not getting excited Scott sorry about we win seven or eight games that's not what I'm I'm here for I want to see us go to the playoffs and do well and uh you know hey Raiders don't do well no sweat for me I just stopped watching the NFL I just stop watching it I got other stuff going on but uh you know it gets harder and harder every year after you know 20 something years of really just sucking and I don't think this plan is good this year and I don't think we're going to see good fruit and I also think we're overestimating the defense even with the signing of Wilkin I I think there's going to be some frustration and let's see how the defense holds up when they start getting frustrated with the offense doing nothing thanks to both you guys uh God bless take care all right there's MDM in Hawaii and mo real quick on this one too I think uh I I understand what he's saying because the Raiders were in a a tough situation because everyone needed a quarterback this year they could not move up maybe they could have and we just don't know because they would have had to given up so much we just it was a ridiculous type of ask we don't know that for sure but this is something they own because of the previous regime now I'm not making excuses it's the organization's the organization but the fact that they let Caro McDaniels and Ziggler and then their plan was garoo they could have done they could have gone after free agents and quarterback the year previous too and they did not do that he talked about CJ strad there but uh that's what happened here and I think you can't forget it so so don't forget about the past MDM and the past has a direct impact on the now because it really limited what they could do last show when I said let's forget about the past it was more about Derek Carr and I just wanted to get past the car wars that are prevalent on social media I I don't want to get back into car is better than this guy car is better cars in New Orleans right now that was the part that I wanted to forget but I will say MDM it's fine to look at how you got into the situation and MDM laid it out okay so you get you get rid of car and that was a bungled situation car regard of what you how you feel about car he's a starting quarterback in his league for the Raiders to have to let him go and not get anything for him big whiff there yeah and as MDM said how many times on this show have we questioned Jimmy garoppo we we we we told fans like Jimmy Garoppolo not gonna be the same Jimmy grapple in in San Francisco no he's not bringing K Shanahan with him I said it plenty of times some R fans disagree with me but I said it over and over again Jimmy Garo is not bringing Kyle Shanahan with him to Las Vegas He's Not Gon the same and lo and B didn't look the same right NOP then you have to throw out eighton no conell out there because Jimmy grappolo isn't playing well then this year this off season you know we don't know obviously if the Raiders could have or could or could have trade up or what what the case may be we're not in those discussions but you're thinking you know if you need a quarterback do what you can to get one and I I remember distinctively some R fans are saying don't give the farm up for CJ stad wait till the following year some callers did say that and we were on the show we were like no we think CJ st's gonna be that guy yeah and and again you can't cry over spilled milk now but the Raiders eventually are gonna have to be aggressive about addressing the quarterback situation you know a lot of people brought really quick a lot of people have brought up the last time the Raiders drafting a quarterback in the first round almost 20 years now it's time to get a franchise quarterback and it's time to be aggressive about and I think that's where people are frustrated about this because uh even though it was tough to try to get up this year in the draft um we we heard from the team and from Antonio Pierce that they were going to be aggressive and then it didn't seem as though they were so we'll see all right now we're going to get out to Jacob in Fresno it's been a week or so since we've heard from Jacob here's jacobob jaob this is Jacob from what's up guys so uh I don't know how this call is going to go might be a bit of a deie Down to some folks I know we're gon we're gonna open up quite a controversial topic because you guys spent all of five seconds talking about Derek Carr last week and the conversation with Derek Carr I feel like we often just say get over it and move on now here's the thing about that I don't know if you guys noticed but uh Aiden o conell and Gardner muu just had a quarterback battle for the for the Raiders for the the silver and black the same team which Derek car started for nine years so without being any more uh condescending with this tone here I want to say to you guys maybe it's a little hard to get over losing our multiple times Pro Bowl quarterback who brought us the closest to any kind of relevance in the last two decades it's a little difficult now I know we're gonna go back to tapate don't go live in the past we're on the next thing it's either Gardener or Aiden right now it's Gardener so let's get after it support our guy but come on man don't you think AP in the back of his head at least at some point maybe even last season is it yeah it would have been great if they didn't let go of Derek would have been nice to have a experienced quarterback who's done a little something at least at least a little something now I know he fumbled out the back of the end zone with the Cowboys and he did it again with the Packers it didn't really matter with the Packers because we're down 20 points I know he got blown out by the Falcons and I like what the heck happened kind of moment the the day at the week after we beat the Chiefs and thought we were getting some momentum I know you did all that stuff but I'm from Fresno I support the guy you know I I had a lot of fun watching the Raiders with Derek car we lost a lot but we've lost a lot my whole time watching the Raiders with Derek was the only time I have some fun time come on guys just let me be a little upset but you know what the future looks bright and let's get behind Gardner muu and I got one more thing to say before I go all right there you go Jacob and Fresno we got about two minutes a little less than two minutes left Mo the only thing I'm gonna say to Jacob is two things one is the fact that even with Derek Carr you talked about the last time they won good years it was almost 10 years ago now I know the the year they made the playoffs with with Rich bace and the whole disaster with guden but still I don't think that's the point I think the point is they didn't have a plan after car the plan the problem isn't that they got rid of Carr it's that they didn't have a plan and you have to go back to McDaniels and zagler on that one really quick I'll say just remember Jacob is from Fresno and where Derek Carr play college football just putting that out there just putting that out there the other thing is I grew up watching with Rich Ganon so there Raiders had a lot more success with Rich Ganon so I guess it's easier for me as someone who grew up as a Raider fan to let go of Derek Carr knowing the Raiders didn't even win a playoff game with Derek Carr right yeah they got to the playoffs twice and it's not all his fault for they're losing of course it's not but it's easier for me to to move on from a quarterback where the Raiders didn't win didn't win in the playoffs at all versus let's say if Derek Carr had got the Raiders uh to the Super Bowl then it would be harder for me to let go of Derek Carr but growing up on Rich Canon I have no problems about moving off the car yeah so there you go Jacob we're we feel for you a little bit but we just disagree just it was the plan that wasn't in place and would they be better off with him there perhaps we don't know we'll see we'll see probably he puts just want to discuss uh quickly uh AOC and muu interesting enough when uh when we were at the beginning of training camp Antonio Pierce had said that the starting quarterback job goes through AOC so interesting that he wasn't able to solidify that position considering it's his second year with the team uh when it comes to muu I mean again you can make a case for either one of these guys but uh at this point Raider Nation let's support him um uh let's give him our support and hope he does well let's hope he starts all 17 games because if he does that means he will be having some semblances of success the last thing you want to do is go back and forth the quarterback so I hope that's not in the cards the bottom line is I don't think either either one of those two guys is good enough to U solidify themselves as a as a long-term solution I think everybody kind of knows that and uh it's all but given that a year from now we will have a different starting quarter who's currently on the not on the uh not on the roster so let me know what you guys think about um muu moving forward um um you know it's good to at least establish who the guy is and get him as many first team reps um as as we can heading into the regular season so I don't believe this any of the starters are going to be playing against the 49ers this Friday but you guys have a great week looking forward to your next games the means the Raiders are in playoff contention yes that that's what it should mean because if if it falls apart from obviously ad conell is gonna get a shot we still both believe ad conell is gonna play some I'll start some games for the Raiders this year unfortunately but not unfortunately but you know if he starts you know something went wrong correct uh but as far as as far as the overall look of of the Raiders going in with regarding mench we talked about it early in the show is regardless of who you wanted to win the job you can't deny that Gardener menu's uh experience could help the Raiders in early part of the season and obviously his Mobility is a plus that you know something that Aon really doesn't have or really lacks so there there are some as Terk said as a lot of our call said you know you're choosing between two two two Al lowend starters but there are some pluses to gamenu there are some pluses in my opinion ano conell an no conell to me more accurate more poison in the pocket Gard menu something he's gonna have to work on going into the season more Po in the pocket less frenetic he has to put more zip on those deep balls I talked about this dur my bleach report show that some of those deep balls that Garner muu throws went for big plays in the preseason to Trey Tucker but a lot of those balls kind of floated a bit and when you're going against starters those those could be interceptions or pass breakups against starters so he's gonna have to put a little more step up to the pocket put a more little more zip on the football and then of course don't turn the ball right exactly all right well said we go on to a new caller Lonnie from Fontana California Lonnie Scott Mo it's Lonnie from Fontana hey just wanted to again thank you guys for keeping me in the know with everything and again as I always say your uh unbiased um opinions and and Analysis is what keeps me coming back so just uh briefly watched obviously the first two preseason games and I'd say the Vikings game I had probably quite a few less heavy Mo size um yeah there there's a few things I don't want to get too deep into but the one thing that uh after the latest episode um of the silver and black Today Show was obviously mchu named the starter and you know the one thing that I didn't quite hear a bit about was was the mobility uh I I know that that was a big concern last year with uh a o conel uh the statue and um so I know mchu yeah he's no he's no Lamar you know he's he's not gonna get you a ton of yards rushing on the ground but he is somebody that that's got some Mobility so just curious to get your guys' take on that um definitely going into this season with uh uh quite a bit of uh guarded optimism I don't even know if it's optimism but it's guarded either way appreciate the show appreciate everything you guys do and uh go Raiders great call Lonnie and Fontana thank you man and thank you for the kind words and the compliments to the show we do really appreciate it's always nice to hear that what Mo and I try to do is coming across to you so thank you for that one but yeah the mobility it definitely is there but as you mentioned earlier as well is that Gardener muu sometimes will leave the pocket and get Happy Feet and go outside the pocket when he really doesn't need to and I think that's what he's gonna have to cut down on to be really successful because he's got these weapons on this offense if he can just stay in the pocket sometimes let me be clear when I say this toon I love Garner M's mobilia one of the things that I pointed out when the Raiders signed him was Gardner mchu gives you that Mobility that anoc conell can't right right so regardless of how good your offensive line is you're going to have some breakdowns at some point you you know Co Miller gets hurt somebody gets hurt your quarterback in today's league has to be able to move and that's something that Luke gety highlighted in his press conference he talked about quarterback Mobility as well uh so I do love that garam muu can move but as you said and as I've said it you know gift can also be a curse so he he has the ability to move but you want him to do it only when it's absolutely necessary you don't want him moving out of the pocket when clean pocket and you have and you have your first and second read there as Antonia Pierce said when he announced the quarterback he said there are times where garam muu can make stuff happen and I'm paraphrasing he said Gar MIT can make things happen but there are times where he has his first or second read he has to let it rip and if you're a quarterback who has the mobility sometimes you're just itching to get out of the pocket because you want to use that part of your game when you could just stand in the pocket just deliver an accurate throw and that's what he's going to have to work on so while the mobility is good he has to reain it in a bit at times and just make the easy completion make the check down button absolutely Lonnie great call now we go to Luis in Oakland another new caller here we go hey Scott and mo how are you fellas doing this is Louis calling from Oakland California yeah and I just want to let you guys know what do you guys think about Gardner menu as the qb1 I was kind of telling my friends joking around it I thought meni was going to win a job because uh L get's offense you know he's more compatible with his system I think further than Aiden okan go but what do you guys think and how do you guys watch the Denver Broncos they're doing pretty good should we worry about them or not all right uh oh third rail all right fellas talk to you later go Raiders all right Lis great call man we appreciate that very much and and he brings up a great Point Mo in talking about the quarterback situation that we haven't gotten into a lot and I don't hear a lot of fans talk about but but Luis was smart enough to go there which is the gets the offense right the fact that if you're the team you're Antonio Pierce you're Luke gsy your Tom Tesco and you're looking at getting off to that fast start who's going to who would does better in that system right now now again that's right now maybe Aiden oconnell can get better in that system because it's new to him too later on but that had to play a factor as well and and the gsy system is still a massive question mark entering this season so I talked about it when I answered Lonnie I believe when I said one of the things that Luke gatsy talked about and his intro press conference was today's League your quarterback's got to be able to move that we should have made a bigger point about that on the show when he said that because and I think I'm I briefly mentioned it that if you look at luk gety the quarterbacks he's had Justin fields in Chicago right and then if you even go back to Mississippi State when he was there had a mobile quarterback there as well so he he had he doesn't have a history of working with statutory I should say statute quarterbacks uh quarterbacks who can't really move much yes so that should that we should have made a bigger point about that the history of him and mobile quarterbacks but the other thing I want to get to with luis's call and I'm going to touch the third rail here uh and start off with a a sigh and say do you remember the show we had where we basically had a whole show when I said Bo Knicks fits the Raiders offense better than Michael Ben I I remember we had a whole B knck episode and I said BR nation is going to go nuclear if I'm right and the Raiders choose B knck I was okay with the I was AB I'm not saying B knck is going to be a Hall of Famer because he played well in two preseason games but what I did say is you know I would I'm fine with Bon knck there were a lot of fans that were down on him and I'm not here to take a Victory lap because B Knicks under Shawn Payton and B Knicks under Luke gsy you you probably get different results um so just because B knck plays well in Denver doesn't mean he would have played well with the Raiders under Letty because I still have questions about LSI as far as worrying about the Denver Broncos look the the Denver Broncos have to beat the Raiders before the Raiders before I think fans now players should take the Denver Broncos seriously of course because you can be beaten in any given week but until the Denver Broncos prove that they can beat the Raiders and they haven't done so in what four years it's not a worry yet bonix is still a rookie he's gonna have some Growing Pains I believe but I I do believe that he's going to be a pretty decent at least a decent quarterback under Shawn pyton because I believe Shawn pyton I know this is third rail talk but I I do still believe Shawn Payton's a pretty good play caller and he's gonna get a lot out of bonick so this is this puts the also the pressure If bonick is pretty good this year puts even more pressure on the Raiders to find their franchise quarterback right and I think that um I Raider fans and I get it because they hate the Broncos and I'm not I'm not here to to say because I still I still believe at this point we'll see how it works out that the Raiders finish above the Broncos the rest of the world thinks the Broncos are much more talented than the Raiders that's their right to think that I don't I don't believe that yet but I do think the bonick situation is an interesting we also had Chrissy Freud on if you remember our quarterback expert who came on and talked a lot about him really liked him and I remember some of the comments there to what if she know she's talking about bonick he's not GNA go in the first round and then we saw of course Shawn Payton this week talk about how he called the Raiders and asked if they wanted to trade up because he wanted to see if they were trying to get get ahead of them to get bone Knicks and they weren't interested they weren't looking to trade up so he knew he had them there uh and so the the interesting thing with the bonick situation I'll leave it at this because we don't know to your point you don't put somebody in the hall of fame or even think they're going to be a good Pro quarterback until they play against first string defenses under the pressure of the regular season right but if the Broncos hit on B Knicks very big trouble for the Raiders because then you look at the division momes uh and you have Herbert and you have Nicks just saying if all those guys do well it's just the Raiders are already behind a quarterback and that just puts them worse in a worse position in the division if they can't address it in the offseason coming up it's just it's hard it's an arms race and if you're behind it's hard to catch up and a good quarterback can even lead teams that don't have as good of a roster to more wins just by sheer elevating an offense so we'll see what happens there but uh but a good call again probably would have still said ah whatever I looks like AOC might still be the the quarterback to go with there just because a the familiarity between the two um the coaching him and you know it's not like he was like bad yeah he threw the pick six but muu almost threw pick six too it just dropped but uh you know so I mean hey man I'm a Raider fan I'm going to root for whoever is the starting quarterback been saying that got we gotta talk all Raider Nation off the Sledge man guys gotta take it chill pill gonna be all right we're still gonna win more than six games but we're not going to the Super Bowl we already knew that um don't tell murf don't tell Mur I think we might make a run at maybe a fringe playoff spot maybe if we're if our defense is really that good but um that run defense had look too too damn good so we'll see man honestly we can't really judge it also the wording I wanted to go get back on the wording what's your guys thought on them uh coach saying for the first quarter is we think M could help us get off to a head St it sounds like he's gonna be a really short leash man like that's that's some weird verbage to use about your starting quarterback uh sounds like it might have a short leash so hey man give me your thoughts on that um go Raiders all right Jesse from Arizon always good calls by the way I'm G to pick up that last point because we were talking about it earlier in the show Jesse he means by quarter he means the first four games not the actual first quarter I don't know if that's how you understood it but that that's what that that's what he meant by that right I think I think that's what Jesse meant okay good I want to make sure but but I look I I I look at this and and I this is the seventh year this show has been on the air by the way Mo okay so seven years I've been doing silver and black today and I've said this every year to Raider fans and you've heard me say it since we've been with Odyssey the last three seasons now is that um don't get too high and don't get too low and I think that's true with this team it's managing expect of course you want your team to win I mean do that of course and expect them to win but also just temper your expectations say hey get better than you were last year didn't we say that early on like we said for Antonio Pierce to be looked at as a success he's got to improve on what he did last year and and so to me now does that mean another win yeah it could or it means that they've just gotten better again it's hard in this AFC I think without some of the pieces they have to get to 10 11 wins doesn't mean it can't happen so Mo that are you with me on that one it's just like you got to keep an even Keel I know being a fan is emotional and you should be emotional it's a passion but if you kind of regulate yourself don't get too disappointed and think the world's over and then don't get too excited if they start off three and0 right I mean you just got to find some happy medium there Scott and doing this for a decade right I'm not I'm still not far removed from being a football fan a Raider fan so while it's easy for us to say temper your expectations because we're coming at it from another perspective we're not coming at it from a fan perspective right so it's easier for us to not be too high too low and just keep it even K but I do understand Raider fans who come into every year optimistic hoping for the best case scenario and I think it that happens for a lot of fans until they see something negative or they see something does isn't going right then you just you go you go from up here to way down here because your expectations have been dashed so right that's what we're here for we're here to fill that middle ground so that even if you you can come into the season and think you're going to win 13 games with a with a loow quarterback that's fine uh but you I guess for the for the listeners that listen to us frequently every week twice a week three times a week they know that they're gonna get an honest opinion that may differ differ from theirs because we're not coming at it saying we're just saying what you want to hear for the best case scenario we're telling you what we think is going to happen yeah and I think a lot of our audience takes that into account and says well yeah I'm GNA say the radi is going to go 14 and three because I'm a fan and I'm emotional about it and I totally understand that but yeah I I I say kudos to the fans who are out there listening to us and call us in and say I love your objectivity because a lot of them I'm sure are very optimistic but they're willing to listen to us and our and our honest expectations and they take that into account so for the fans out there continue to be optimistic sure but uh also continue to listen to our show and just hear us out on certain things even if you disagree with us it's fine because we're not always right and and we may not be right this year but we're going to give you our honest opinion and it's it's levelheaded and you know that so continue doing your thing and being a fan and supporting the team and we'll continue to do our thing and we'll have a happy medium and we'll have a great show together yes and and the thing the thing too to remember for everybody out there and mo I know you believe in this too which is um you can think we're being negative but that is only because look we live in a world today uh oh quick Soap Box we live in a world today where everybody wants confirmation bias you already have a bias we all have them right yeah you think the Raiders are gonna be great this year or you think the Raiders are gonna suck you let's say that's your bias one way or the other when I say something that says they're gonna suck then the people who think they're G to suck they feel really good about that and then when I say the Raiders are GNA be great they're going to make the playoffs people who already believe that and want to believe that they love that the people on the other side of that are going to come in and say oh you're you're blowing smoke up somebody's butt or you're being too negative right now again Mo said it perfectly we're not always right we don't do this show because we know more about football than anybody else out there I'm not saying that but what we won't do because we would not be able I would feel I would feel like I was covered in in in oil if I came on here and told you something I didn't believe or told you what you wanted to hear all the time there are people out there in the business who do that and look they do what they do I'm not I'm not criticizing them I don't like it so Mo and I always talk about this off the air too right Mo which is We're not gonna do a show that we wouldn't want to listen to right and for me I like the back and forth right we don't always agree on everything here on the show Mo and I but we you're going to get from us those views on how we think things are going to go and I would say over the last couple years have we been wrong about things absolutely Ely have we also been pretty close as far as how the Raiders are going to perform and some of the concern yes I put our record up for that uh and and we've done well with that again we all make bad calls because we're willing to put our opinion out there a lot of people stay silent because then you can't get criticized because you don't put yourself out there but uh we do it so we appreciate that and always Jesse with a great call so thank you for that um all right we're gonna move on now we're going back up to Dave Casper the ghost hey guys guys Scott Mo the ghost this is Dave Casper the ghost from the great state of New York in the Hudson Valley I just wanted to not really a question just some some comments uh they're going obviously with uh Gardner mchu personally I don't think either quarterback whoever they chose ultimately is not going to make a break this season for the Raiders both quarterbacks are subpar in my opinion I understand why they went with muu he's a little more mobile he's a veteran but he was God awful against Dallas and uh so we'll see I think if the season goes sideways quickly then you would probably bench him and bring in AOC just because he's the younger player in terms of the as I said in my previous phone call I think this season will make will it will be made or broken by their defense they were terrible against the run again against Dallas so unless they Shore up that aspect of their defense this will be a really long season I love Jack Jones and even jakorian Bennett what I little I've seeing of him on the field he looks like he's going to take a next step up so overall I I thought the game was a microcosm of how the season's going to play out their defense will keep them in the game their offense will do something late third quarter early fourth quarter turn the ball over or three and out in their own deep in their own End Zone and and the the defense will bend Bend Bend and then finally break uh so I you had a caller last time for I think NorCal Raider this this team is nowhere close to winning a Super Bowl so they have Devonte Adams who's 32 years old if the season goes sideways yes I'm I'm playing this as a GM then you need to move him because in three four years if the Raiders are competitive he will be he will be past his prime so if the Raiders season goes sideways quickly I would look to move him and finally uh Mo you had someone tweet you last week saying that the Raiders are officially in the Jeff Fisher Zone I love that expression they are officially in purgatory for the foreseeable future which is the worst place to be Mark hen the Mavericks owner said the worst place to be is in the middle you should either be going for the title or running a deep playoff front or rebuilding the Raiders I don't know what the Raiders are they're obviously they're trying to be compe but they are officially in the Jeff fiser zone six seven eight wins um all right that's all I got guys uh final note they they need uh Tyree Wilson is more bust than late bloomer and the defense especially needs depth yes Nate Hobbs already got hurt this week he he's hurt every year if they don't get any depth in here Gilmore just signed with another team I don't know why they're not bringing in a veteran for the secondary boy sorry Dave Dave Casper's the ghost got cut off there but from the Hudson Valley By the Way Hudson Valley beautiful area of New York including now we're in August but we're coming on October which Halloween's coming Sleepy Hollow is in the Hudson Valley up there pipsy up there the cat skills so beautiful beautiful area great call well let's focus on that the defense he mentioned Nate Hobs getting hurt again he was on the sideline with the trainers uh on uh Saturday we'll see what happens there he just can't stay on the field good play player just can't stay on the field and then you look at what's happening too with that defense getting gashed against the Cowboys again who were not rolling out their first offense uh and and and they still got gash so so what how concerned should we be about that defense right now heading into the last week of the preseason so let let me unpack a few things here right so we gotta go first I had this I had this post on Twitter last night and I said I'm not as worried about the defense as some rer fans because it's the preseason I don't when I look at the preseason I look at individual performances versus overall play simply because you got a mix of backups and starters in there I know the the first string Stars didn't look look great either but it's the preseason defensive coiners aren't really game planning in the preseason right so I'm not really concerned too concerned about the defense simply because the Raiders run defense for all the plays for all the praise that the Raiders defense got last year the run defense was 21st last year the run defense wasn't good last last year you know the pass rush was good the coverage was good but this isn't this isn't a new issue for the Raiders so it doesn't really concern me all that much now of course if you want the r to be to have an elite defense as Dave Casper the go said they're gonna have to patch that up obviously but I'm not worried about the defense right now I was more looking at individual performances I was more concerned about the lack of development out of Tyreek Wilson and Byron young their first and third rounders from a couple of years ago right so so that's one thing the questionable dep I absolutely agree with and I tweeted this also last night I said the Raiders need to go out and get a veteran cornerback they're two rookies didn't your piece on Sports not talk about that as well yes D Cameron richardon and MJ devenshire are not ready to play regular season football Brandon facon hasn't been healthy for the last two years he suited up for three games last year he's missed nearly all of camp we haven't even seen fa so even if joran Bennett wasn't great he probably would have won the job by theault because he really didn't have any real competition if one of the Raiders starter starting Corners gets hurt and he brought up n Hobs who's missed 10 games in the last two years if one of the Raiders starting quarterbacks gets hurt they have an issue they have an issue at that position so Tom Tesco I don't know whether he does it now this week or before after Cuts or before week one he needs to sign a veteran cornerback the last thing I want to address Scott really quick Dave C Dave Dave C vers ghost mentioned the Jeff Fisher Zone the Raiders have already been in the Jeff Fisher Zone they didn't just enter the Jeff Fisher Zone let me read you the Raiders records over the last five years 2019 7-9 2020 8-8 2021 made the playoffs 10 and seven then they go back 2022 6 and 11 2023 eight and nine I'm not a math major I'm not a mathematician but reading those records out it's about 500 they've been mediocre for the last half a decade so they've been in this middle Zone already they have to find themselves out of it they sure do and that's you know it's I think it's hard to do without without knowing who your quarterback is now you you you go get a quarterback there's no guarantee they go get a franchise quarterback and he works out like yeah there's a chance but then you just go get another one you have to try it and they're even at the quarterback position in that Jeff Fischer's own Purgatory as as Catholics call it uh so so th those are things are going to do but but a good call and I think that he hit on some important things there as well and it is what it is look doesn't mean that you can't surprise if if if if if the defense holds up but I do agree I've I'm surprised now we're going into this final week before cutdowns and everything I think you may see the Raiders make a move but I think guys are coming off the board like you talked about Gilmore and a lot of people think Gilmore is trash he's better and offers depth than some of the players they have right now so you have to consider that and keep it in mind again not a long-term going to be an all pro it's not what they're looking for but they they need to do it they're going up if you look at the schedule you want to go against Joe burrow and Lamar Jackson and all these guys and Patrick Mahomes twice with a defensive back field that's that's very thin it's not good it won't work out well for them they can't just survive on only Jack Jones they're gonna have to do something so we'll see go really quick Scott let's keep in mind Gilmore sign with the Vikings so yes a after that you're thinking okay adori Jackson a killer Witherspoon maybe they pick up someone after Cuts maybe Tom Tesco's mate waiting for cuts to happen he could swipe up a cornerback that way but those are your best options right now but they need to bring in a veteran because again those rookies are not ready agree 100% all right here we go our last caller of the day on this overtime extended Raider Nation mailbag here on silver and black today is our good friend in Oregon scre louay Lou yeah this is screwy Louie in Oregon OG I not impressed with the pre-season game against Dallas but I'm hoping that they're holding back and make it look like they're not going to be as good as what they could be um neither quarterback was impressing me whatsoever I think OK connell's got the better arm minu scrambles so I think that's probably why they picked him to be the starter especially with our o line not being so well um situated over on the left side with two guys that are still out but maybe they'll play against the Chargers they're going to have to um Jack Jones looked good for a while until he got faked out of the chot strap on that one move by the rookie in the end zone that wasn't so good so yeah I'm a little nervous now about the season I'm hoping I don't have to make an apology to ESPN and all the experts if we end up six and 11 or seven and 10 so yeah it was a pretty ugly game I think we should make a trade if possible Trey Lance um he's the third Stringer over there in Dallas he played better than our two starters I'd even give up Tay for him I know it's crazy but good and maybe Tay wouldn't mind going over to Dallas since they seem to make the playoffs every year well that's pretty much all I have um kind of not looking forward to the next game but they're not playing the starters against San Francisco so be able to see more of the third stringers rookies udfas give us a better option on who to pick and who to let go for that 53 man roster okay that's it peace out bye all right there screwy Louie up in Oregon or OG OG we just gotta OG graphic or something I'll jump into this guy if I if I'm traded Devonte ads the Cowboys there better be a a Dak Prescott package there I'm I'm just saying just putting that out there right now as far as as the Raiders overall teams concern again I know a lot of expectations are low after that Cowboys game but I pointed this out in the last show that let's keep in mind the Raiders did not have their top pass catcher Devonte Tams on the field they did not have their best offensive lineman Colton mill on the field they did not have their impressive first round rookie and Brock bers on the field so the offense should look a lot better with those three guys back in the lineup as I said to uh Dave Casper uh Dave Casper the ghost the defense doesn't really concern me right now simply because you're mostly going up against vanilla defenses anyway you're not game planning really and the run defense has already been a problem this isn't a new issue it wasn't like there's a regression there it was 21st last year so when you're looking at the Raiders defense you know obviously Elite defenses can stop the run maybe the rers defense won't be elite but if it could still be top 10 and scoring it like it was last year I think it's can still help this team win football games my my concern overall big picture with the Raiders and theyve cper go said this depth they need they they need to booler depth at some key spots I mentioned cornerback I would even add another offensive lineman you know you hope Co Millers can stay healthy you hope the starting five can stay healthy but after DJ glaze it gets kind of thin over there so they're gonna have to patch up some spots um before they finalize their 50 man depth chart they're going to have to add some depth because the depth is questionable you know guys are going to get hurt this is the NFL it's a physical football game guys are going to go down you need depth if you're going to have a playoff run yeah and I think that that's um that's one of the things that you you you have to look at I mean they've signed a couple linebackers uh in the last few days as well and people are like why they sign linebackers well we know that Tommy ikenberg has had an ankle injury so he might not be ready to go for the start of the season so they're they're bringing those guys on but but but again that's and we talk about it a lot on this show Mo and again Louie thanks for the call buddy we appreciate it as always is is depth in the NFL means everything right the team with depth talent you have okay you got your starters and you know those are your guys but when that starter comes out which inevitably happens on every team you got to have somebody who can at least hold the fort while that person is out and sometimes if it's a long extended injury then you need somebody who can actually perform at a little bit higher level and that's the difference between teams in that Jeff fiser Zone I.E purgatory and teams who make the playoffs perennially which is the idea that when somebody goes down and the next man steps up they're not losing much so when they lose a guy they're able to still stay where they need to be to make the playoffs and make those pushes so that's why yes you got to have the right starters don't get me wrong but you also need that depth and then that's the I'm like yumo the only thing that worries me about that defense at this point is that depth especially on the back end with who they're going to be facing so we'll see how it all wraps
