the 49ers just named Christian mcaffrey questionable for the season opener against the Jets although mcaffrey spoke to the media yesterday and said that he expects to play so I expect him to play as well he wasn't a full participant in practice this week he has a calf SL Achilles strain uh which doesn't sound great so let's go back and recap what we know about this injury he originally injured his calf Achilles week 17 last year in Washington you remember that game played the first half left in the third quarter Elijah Mitchell finished and afterwards Kyle shanan said ah no big deal nothing too bad but mcaffrey didn't play for the next two weeks maybe he could have but he didn't week 18 the ners had their starters most of them and then the next week was a bye-week and then he returned for the playoffs and was not himself remember he averaged 5.4 yards per carry during the regular season when he was the offensive player of the year hurt his calf took two weeks off comes back four and a half yards per carry in the playoffs with a a fumble an Infamous fumble in the Super Bowl so that's the backdrop then he has all offseason to rest the calf SL Achilles all offseason sits out OTAs gets gets a renegotiated contract comes back for mini camp two practices comes back for training camp doesn't practice every day on day nine of training camp not his ninth day of practice but the ninth day of training camp he re-aggravate his calf Achilles hasn't played since has practiced a little bit so my question is what is his injury really they first said it's a calf strain now it's a calf SL Achilles strain what is a strain is a strain a sprain because if it's a sprain isn't a sprain another word for a partial tear I don't know I don't know they're not going to tell us but I'm starting to feel like whatever it is rest hasn't fixed it and won't fix it he's going to have to deal with this and maybe it's not something the ners can be cautious about maybe it's just part of the aging process of a NFL running back I don't know but it doesn't sound great again my best guess is that he will play and uh I think this injury is going to be a lingerer I think it's going to linger the rest of the the rest of the season the rest of his career we'll see [Music]
