[Music] [Applause] hello and welcome to the round so far brought to you by Amy Riley beverage and Kane Collins with you and Kane finals week one is in the book we'll start with that big story because what a game we had at the scg where the swans fought from behind in a nailbiter against the Giants just everything you want from a final I thought it was an amazing game of football both sides were so tough thought the Giants were amazing there's papley back into the side how important was he in the last quarter where the swans kicked 64 to 21 in the last quarter to Win It Lloyd was amazing will'll get to him as well and some of the swans less lights thought Jordan was really important Campbell came on but when Ward kicked this goal what a call it was from the veteran who's played 317 games I think it is now you thought all over but Jordan keeps this in spots up the Super Sub Campbell who was unbelievable the impact that he had after coming on in the third quarter and we'll get to that man Isaac Heeney and what he did today was absolutely heroic nothing short of heroic it will go down as one of the great finals performances and amarti was quite but that didn't stop him from kicking the match winner and have a look at this Kane swans have been the comeback Kings all year so we've seen it time and time again particularly in the back half of the Season we've questioned all year whether or not they can give themselves uh every chance of winning the flag if they do allow opposition sides to go out in the front but today 28 points down late in the second quarter they win the game again they looked gone didn't they I mean the Giants that have to think gez we''ve really let one slip Adam Kingsley spoke after the game so good for three quarters but we let it slip in the last quarter and that they look they've spoken about it they've been asked about it John Longmire always has asked about it and it is a worry and it was a real worry today but when you have the likes of Warner after a quiet first three quarters having 13 and seven clearances five score involvements in the last quarter Gordon was really well held thought the Giants did an amazing team job on him ping and everyone around him stopped him from getting that dangerous outside ball Campbell we mentioned as the sub and papley five disposals and three goal assists and some of the great goal celebrations you've seen today he's just such an important player and P's the star of the game like I don't I think we just think oh he's a great celebrator he's good enthusiasm he's good for team now he's a star of the game he's a genuine star one of if not the best small forward in the game and to do that of the preparation that he had today like like Heeney was nothing short of inspirational a lot of the performances you mentioned there were in the attacking half of the field what they managed to do defensively in the last little bit there were some moments in this game where the swans put their bodies on the line to save it well and it was good because I thought their defense was horrible I thought Mills had some really poor moments coming off his man and going to spoil and missing I thought they let the ball get out the back and Keith kicked an easy goal off the ground I thought they gave away some sloppy free kicks Blakey and Mills but this is how they turned it around late this is defending like your season is on the line and and it was because it's the easiest path clearly through to the Grand Final the week off so vital the home preing final Blakey had a poor game but I thought some of his efforts you saw that diving spoil so just a just a credit to them um that they could have easily turned their toes up it could have got too hard like it did for Port Adela in the other qualifying final for them it didn't get too hard for Sydney remarkable team great coaching performance as well from this ones there's always some spicy moments in the Sydney Derby and there was a flash point at quarter time and it was sort of capped at the very end of this by the Giants head of footy Jason McCartney in a moment that he had with Tom papley what did you make of this yeah I mean I'm just not sure he needs to be there Jas he clearly has words with Pap you can see it he says something to him and I mean that the contact is insignificant but I just don't think the AFL like officials getting in the road of players as much as he will say he's trying to deescalate it and take the heat out of it but he probably added to it and I think we'll probably hear more of that throughout the week even if it's just a please explain let's get to our sday star now and it could be none other than Isaac Heeney he was fantastic 30 disposals seven clearances and three goals including that late goal that got them back level when the chips were down he was the man that stood up season yeah just amazing I thought he was a full four quarter performer when some of his other teammates were down this is just inspirational what he did there that that is as good a finals Mark as you're ever going to see don't downplay that that is a genuine Specky like that's in the top 50 marks I've ever seen of all time and then went forward and kicked three so the thing that makes him so dangerous is the Midfield craft but then he can get the mismatch forward uh him and Haywood and papley they were the three that I thought would really worry the Giants because let's face it their TOS have been pretty much insignificant Sydney and they were again today they they just sort of play a role McLean an AM Marti and Logan McDonald but their medium to small forwards were the ones that did the damage and Heeney said after the game he said look I just needed a crack in that other words well he cracked in like I haven't seen a player crack in this year and for the Giants I thought Tom graah was also enormous for his maintain contested possessions particularly the first three quarters just on the Giants do they have any mental demons going into next week given they had this game under their control and let it slip it's disappointing well I mean with the week off Pride of the finals I don't think it's a bad thing to keep playing now they've had really two finals like games against the Western Bulldogs in the last game now this one they're in good shape I mean I don't be surprised if the Giants are still there on Grand final day yes you've got to go the long way around but they get Brisbane at their home ground jalong that wouldn't hold any fears for them I don't think even though that is in Melbourne so they're still in a really good position and they can Channel a lot of what they did today Bedford comes back in they probably hurt not having him to go to Warner particularly in the last quarter so so he will play I'm worried about Steven Canelo I just he think he looks out of sorts and he probably playing injured and maybe that was a risk not worth taking so whether they just put him to the side and bring Bedford back in but their game's in good shape it'll stack up and I still think still think they're going to play a fair role in this final series I'd take a swans Giants Grand Final if you ask me right now all right let's let's get to the gab satday night footy an elimination final and this game was basically one and done halfway through the second quarter they kicked the first 15 scoring shots the lines that were 9660 before Carlon even hit the scoreboard 57 minutes without a goal for Caron score without a score you're right so it's all over up by 10 goals before um car had even troubled the scorers and 20 marks inside 450 we're seeing some of these here Caron could not get the ball across halfway they just broke down they they clearly lost their call a couple of times tonight Joe just ducked out the back for an easy walking goal that was demoralizing they took the risk with a few injured players docky there I mean credit to him for getting up kicked a nice goal late but clearly was out of sorts and cam Rea kicked three goals he is now a genuine finals performer got a really good record in finals and shapes as a as a match winner so I think for Brisbane just tick the box and move on then next week's opposition can be far greater and put you under so much more heat than what the blues did today so that's one way you just tick the box they're inaccuracy still a big issue and one that looms large over them we'll get to that in just a little bit but before that their control was stamped over this game by the way they just penned C in in their back half Caron couldn't get out they took so many interet marks in the first half the Lance yeah this is what I mentioned like they couldn't get the ball across halfway like so credit to the lines their pressure to start this game was enormous and Caron continually turned the foot over so the easy easiest way to score is from turnover and all these we are seeing are are from genuine Caron turnovers poor option or making po decisions under pressure and I thought the Lions defense early was really good Harris Andrews was terrific Leicester was strong so I mean yeah that they'd be pretty pleased with the way that they started clearly and damage was done yes they took the foot off the gas but you can't be too critical of that the two guys who spearheaded that first half performance one in his first ever Final in will Ashcraft and one who's played about 100 in D they were awesome that's amazing like to be able to do that and to pull the trigger early on in a final those two kicks came back to back so they had 17 score involvements between them now not Ash's biggest numbers in terms of disposals but he's had 20 nearly every second touch has led to a score so nine score involvements 95% efficiency and look at just how cool and calm and composed he is with footy in hand yep you could think this is a training drill with the lack of resistance from the blues but no Chin cot was interesting for Caron like he clearly would have done the job on on Zoro which would have been nice Holland went across and and tried to put some body on Zoro when the blues got back into the game but these two I just thought their composure ball use and and toughness really really stood out they are class Above So Caron kicked the last 11 of the last 16 goals of the game to make the margin a little bit respectable by the end you mentioned brisbane's in accuracy when car put the heat on them that's when brisman got in accurate and started making some mistakes and we've already seen they led the Giants by 30 points in the last month and lost that they LED Collingwood by 31 points in the last month and lost that as well I still worry a little bit about Brisbane when the heat's put on them whether or not they can withstand yeah and so you should like that lman one there that handall needed to go a second earlier to Bailey yes Bailey still should have kicked the goal but when the pressure you're right when the pressure was on they they capitulated somewhat so they they just need some cool heads they need some really strong leadership out on the ground they've had fade outs throughout the year they've been really inaccurate and missed easy shots like that Logan morus he's a young player but he can't miss from the goal Square so I mean that should have been a 10 to 12 goal win if not for for those moments and you think um the Giants are not going to let them get away with that next week just last one on Carlton quickly we know about the injury issues back half of the season but three years into Michael Voss as a coach now I think the biggest concern for the blues is you still don't know if they're a good side or not yeah now it's hard to hard to ask answer that question now you you have to say well we haven't seen them with a full Squad long enough it's not like the Western Bulldogs who haven't been challenged by injury this year or or some of the other sides even Sydney basically had their full team to pick from today um so when they get that and hopefully they get that with a new fitness ball next year if he can make a difference but it's a big year for the Blues next year because there's not any significant list changes that's going to happen at the end of this year this is your squad it is a strong Squad we've seen when it's up and running it is one of the best teams in the comp but consistently week to week they haven't been able to do that and they haven't been able to give themselves a position to finish top four after the Home and Away season which is the only place to be now Kane we have an important reminder to all you footy fans out there that Amy are offering the chance to win flights accommodation and two tickets to the 2024 AFL Grand Final through the had a clanger competition simply upload your clanger moments on Instagram or Facebook and tag Amy inssurance to be in the running the competition closes September 13 when our game has its moments lucky you're with Amy Friday Night 40 at the MCG another elimination final and the Hawks were absolutely fantastic against the Western bulldogs and it was the two youngsters kader and Nick Watson first year players that dominated yeah seven goals between them I mean how how good I mean this Hawthorne group hasn't been overall by any sit situation yes they haven't played under lights very often if at all yes they haven't played on The Prime Time stage but when they have they've just water off his duck Ducks back and this is the case again like dear was just enormous some of the contested marks that he took his ability to go back when accuracy has probably been an issue for both of these players to to brush that aside in front of 97,000 in a Cutthroat final which was the final of the weekend in terms of the most anticipated one to do this amazing and credit to that young man the wizard because he's been under the pump he's not liked by the opposition for the way that he goes about it but for him to do that and celebrate like he does um it's just a joy to watch really and Hawthorne have been a joy to watch and that was exactly the case once again on Friday night well our man Aran deserves royalties for the for the wizard because he coined that phrase on Gable last year it's gone nuts Platform 9 and 34s last night caring everyone with their wizard hats on it was fantastic to say that was amazing I'm all in on him like he's just he's just absolute he's so infectious to watch and I mean there's going to be a lot of his GS he's been sold and I just thought I'd get one as well if he can't beat them join them like honestly how good those two been they're the most fun team I'm so good he's so good if they win it I'm getting a wizard tattoo a wizard tto one and a wizard one now can't wait to see that hopefully they do go all the way now they intercept we spoke about the Lions intercepting you got to take that hat off I spoke about the Lions intercepting before but they the Western Bulldogs in as well throughout the night yeah they did I mean this is this is it this is the pressure that they bring in finals four half intercepts and the numbers were just extraordinary in terms of what they did so 11773 from turnovers only conceded five goals from their own turnovers themselves the amount of times they forced the Western Bulldogs into fumble or poor decisions and the way you just watch the direction of how they communicated set up guarded dangerous bace off slow play when it went into fast play they pressed like good teams do then when the ball hit the ground they swarmed then when it was on the deck they were clean first give bang away what they've done really since you know about round eight or nine when they've been the best team I can't remember how many times I've said it but certainly for the last 12 or 13 weeks they're the best team in it and you probably stand by that still the way they've harnessed that momentum as well in the back half of the season has been incredible what about the Western Bulldogs though because they've been so good in so many areas this year have a look at this top four for disposals contested possessions marks and inside 50s and they had an off night in all of those categories on Friday night but this is what happens when you don't give yourself the double chance and make top four they leave themselves vulnerable and they get punished they didn't everyone get sucked into the Western Bulldog he was he was really revving them up after they beat the Giants and qualified for finals they they absolutely got ahead of themselves and we've seen probably every five to six weeks they put in an absolute stinker throughout the year you can't trust them you can't trust them defensively and you can't trust that they're going to deliver when the heat is on the heat was on despite the advantages that they had despite the fact that got if not the best list the second best list in it despite the fact they are the healthiest list they had everyone to choose from bar Bailey Smith and to deliver that um in a Cutthroat final against a side that just shouldn't be contending is another really disappointing season for the dogs and their list manager sam power should feel really let down because he's he's put together one of the best squads that just can't finish top four and haven't won a final in three years which is just unacceptable now Kane I need you to talk us through what happened with the bont on Friday night because I couldn't get my head around at the ground when the game was there to be won in the second and third quarter he was stationed forward basically the whole time you can see it there four disposals in that time only 78% time on ground they're saying he was fit but why wasn't he involved when the game was slipping away from I know that's Luke beverage I mean that that that exactly is Luke beverage like he tries to muck around with lineups it's the reason they go three and five to start the year it's the reason why he's talking about Evolution why he doesn't pick Riley West and picks harms I don't know that is just Luke beverage you put the best player in the game when you're desperately need him in a big Final in tough conditions around the fo0 and we saw it early in the last quarter it was almost like G bont's going to get the Bulldogs back in this game so it's not Fitness he was very fit to start the last quarter you saw him bursting out of stoppage and kicking goal so yeah just Luke beverage continually does just bizarre things and we'll see if they review that once again but usually the Western Bulldogs just nothing to see here and they'll move on and probably finish seventh or eighth again next year we need to speak about Jack ginan because he made all the headlines on Friday night for his pre back to preparation once again and how's the celebration aming I think I love this this type of personality in the game and the way that hawthor have harnessed this has been fantastic well it's good when you back it up well I didn't love the fact that he was there just as a distraction once again just cuz you probably don't need to like the the the risk reward of being out in that situation is the risk I don't understand what the fact that we're talking about it the fact that it's potentially a distraction I know Sam Mitchell said oh everyone would have been out it is unusual to go to a pub the night before it's not the done thing yes a restaurant with family and a talian meal have some past and no worries like no one's going to worry but it is unusual but we don't care about it when you deliver and when your team delivers and when they Embrace that but would I'd be advising him to do it again go to a pub the night before a big game a prelim final a no wouldn't because the team still doesn't need the distraction but uh what a recruit he has been and all of their recruits dambrosio the Charles Royce been like even back to to players like scrimshaw and players like that have just been so important to them Lloyd Meek as well shout out to him playing like Prime Den Cox that's what he was he playing like 2006 Dan Cox that's what Lloyd Meek was doing amazing he's been great all right Thursday night footy at the Adelaide over where jalong absolutely dominated Port Adelaide and they LED that domination from the middle out of the stopage they were fantastic what about this just just tough I mean Chris Scott's he he is a literal Football Genius the best coach in it amazing win loss record 13 preum finals out of 15 years Jong look at that look at that around the footy it was PT adl's Midfield we were talking about and jong's weak Midfield and their weak Ruck Division and they've gone and done this put 54 points from stoppage in the Plus versus padlay with their names through the Midfield burn Jones there Mana off Mana just kicking a stoppage goal he kicked three had a million score involvements but Tyson stangle just doing what he wants because uh everyone got sucked in from Port adade so a complete lack of effort from Port aday they turn their toes up I think in moments some players chose to give in but credit Su you along for how tough and how clean and how they came with a plan how they used their High half hours to protect the stoppage but then get in behind um it it was a master class and and now you've just got to put it on the pad L mids to respond because otherwise it's going to be pretty embarrassing if they go out straight HS again it's been a breakout year in many respects for Max Holmes but this was well and truly a Breakout game because his running power and his work ethic around the ground was fantastic he's a star now I mean we got to start saying okay Max Holmes is a star is he a top 15 player in football probably is now then Patrick Dangerfield in 2022 said he has Jud likee traits and we got Max Holmes skinny sort of wing halfback has Jud likee traits well here's your Jud likee traits look at the work rate the speed to then get out to the outside and then get on this and the ball use he went inside to Center bounce and he stared Zack buts down and go okay you think you're the most courageous player in football juel all Australian I'll show you he was toying with them like this one here this is what I'm talking about pushes him into the stoppage P they win the hit and then goes all right good luck good luck catching me and that was at a really important stage cuz padl had control back late in the first quarter and they started the second quarter with that quick goal all thanks to Max Holmes missed the Grand Final of course and the motivation for him um to be there if Jon can get there this year is clearly evident yeah he'll be desperate to play in a flag later this year well the moment of the weekend it could only be Jeremy Cameron if Isaac hey took just about the mark of the Year this is just about the goal of the year because this was fantastic and it set the tone for the probably not supposed to been that way is it but the football is not supposed to do that supposed to that would usually go across the face of gol that's just hitting that is amazing look at the grind Myers there staring straight down and Chris Scott loved it look at him he he knew in this moment gez we're on it's we are on here and we are on again and we're doing it again so yeah one of the best recruits in the history of football really Jeremy K yeah he certainly is I think we're both concerned about Port out off halfback the lack of Dan Houston and K Farrell going out of the side we saw this so often they just got picked off this ground so this tactic annoys me why that ball goes to the center Corridor just means if you don't win that ground ball you're too easy to score against look how quickly jalong off turnover that long Central kick down the line go back and score so put ADL really aggressive with their ball movement but with the forward line that they've got which is a makes your forward line and that's really kind Dixon on one leg radal is hardly play there georgis is is the one but Francis Evans Jed mckinty Quinton she it's it's a pretty weak forward line that they've got to be stronger but I just wouldn't be kicking the ball centrally like that and being out crumbed and being scored off too easily yeah the cats didn't even look concerned with the fact that Tom Stewart missed that game through on us he'll certainly be back for the prelim in a couple of weeks time pad's record in finals and their record at home in finals is starting to become a real concern now because have a look at this this is their last four finals they've lost all four three of them have been home they haven't just lost them though they've been spanked in all four of them yeah it's big and there's no hiding from that and um that Ken hickley knows it he knows about that and there's not much you can do about it other than front up I know they trained today uh that'd be pretty motivated to put in a better performance but I just say to the Midfield you are absolutely smashed like you were against Brisbane earlier on in the year where you lost by 79 smashed and you responded well winning eight out of the last nine you're going to have to put it on him horn Francis shouldn't start on the bench start him because he's the only one that tried on Friday night with Bergman and Bo I thought start him on ball put it on Butters Rosie and Horn Frances to get the job done bit of a concern as well with Zack buts subbed out uh in the game with this injury got the tackle here and looked really nasty he didn't get involved in a lot of contests after this they play Hawthorne in a semi-final on Friday night at the Adat oval the Giants play Brisbane in the other semi-final on Saturday night at NG stadium so you'd hope Zack buts gets up for that I mean he's fine it's a Cutthroat final you got s Rubes a lot of players are saw he's going to have to front up I'm surprised he subbed himself out essentially at halftime they're only 20 points down with what is essentially bruise ribs yes they hurt but there's no structural damage he's got to play and he's got to play better plenty still to come on afl.com.au finals focus with alist Clarkson that drops on Wednesday as does
