Starmer rules out Brexit reversal but promises to ‘reset’ relations with EU

[Music] reassuring sign of European Unity or red rag to the brexit Bulldogs Sakia starma in Berlin with German counterpart Olaf Schulz today announcing a new treaty on trade defense and immigration and promising a wider reset with Europe Germany and the United Kingdom are good friends close partners and trusted allies but a potential sticking point a Mobility scheme for young workers high on the German wish list a reset with Europe a reset with the EU that does not mean reversing brexit um or re-entering the single Market or the Customs Union but it does mean a closer relationship on a number of fronts including the economy including defense including exchanges um but we do not have plans um for the Youth Mobility um scheme but we do have plans for a closer relationship between um us and the EU what does this mean in practice K starma visited leading technology firm Seaman energy today one of many Global employers who might want to encourage easier movement for young workers and cut through the broader post brexit red tape this bilateral agreement is only between Germany and the UK so how will it affect the UK's trading status outside the EU and outside the Customs Union there are other other issues to sign off too like military support for Ukraine and tackling the people Smugglers I think it's important to work with our friends and allies whether they're in Europe or elsewhere in the world we need to cooperate what I don't want to see him do is conceed powers to the European Union we've got to be using the freedoms that we secured as a result of brexit to boost our economy to back the industries of the future and to tackle issues like illegal migration a UK prime minister in Germany a clear change of tone for European relations after years of friction under the conservatives The Joint goal economic growth but deals require compromise for the moment the big thing that Europeans are talking about is some kind of Youth Mobility scheme and at the moment Kama seems to be saying actually no we're not so interested in that so I think that will be an area to watch because I think ultimately we will need to make concessions in order to un lock some of the prizes that the EU has to offer Us in terms of Market access this is the fifth time K starm has met the German Chancellor since walking into number 10 he probably knows the German Anthem off by Heart by now from Berlin now to Paris the next stop on the post brexit reset tour a formal meeting tomorrow with president macron
