now uh Karma celebrates 50 days as prime minister and what a busy 50 days it's been for the PM hasn't it with renewed pressure this week over his government's decision to scrap the winter fuel payments meanwhile off J's energy price cap will increased by 10% from October the 1st for a typical household in England Scotland and WTH um but this has come as a double whamming for pensioners you've had your winter fuel allowance taken away and now the price cap is changing I'm joined by GB news political correspondent Olivia Utley to explain how labor are going to wriggle their way out of this one because it doesn't look good does it no this is a really really tricky hole that labor has found themselves in When Rachel Reeves announced just a couple of weeks ago that she would be massively scaling back those winter fuel payments cutting it all together for around 10 million pensioners by making it means tested rather than just given to everyone it was controversial but yesterday it was announced that offen would be raising its uh energy price gap for the first time since last January meaning that for the average household prices will go up by about 10% now as you say d that is a double whammy for pensioners just when they're losing their uh winter fuel payments as we're going into Winter by the way their energy prices will go up and obviously it will be pensioners who are affected worse by this because pensioners uh tend to be around their house for longer they're not out at work it sort of goes without saying there is now a lot of pressure on Rachel Reeves from all sides of the political Spectrum to change her mind on this to do a U-turn you've got the conservatives tabling an early day motion that's basically a parliamentary mechanism to force a debate on the issue in the House of Commons then you've got people like John McDonald a former Shadow Chancellor under Jeremy Corbin as I say all sides the political Spectrum also calling on K dama to change his mind about this plus independent experts like Martin Lewis the well respected uh Financial Guru will Rachel Reeves change her mind about this it is a very tricky one and actually what happens to pensioners isn't the only problem that this off gem hike throws up it will also have big knock on effects on the economy yes pensioners and households will be badly affected but so too will British businesses and last time last January when we saw uh prices hiked by far more than this time it should be said we did see sway of pubs and restaurants having to close for good because they simply could not keep up with those Energy payments that's not what K sta wants when he says that he wants to go for growth the economic backdrop for the new prime minister suddenly looks a lot tougher it does indeed it Liv in that honeymoon period hasn't started it hasn't lasted very long is it the one story that shocked me today was the fact that Rachel Reeves evidently carried out no impact assessment before withdrawing the winter fuel payments for 10 million pensions I believe are going to be affected it it's pretty chilling that they did this without even thinking through what it meant to older people I think it's something that which the labor party were were planning for a long time now and you know to defend the labor party here there there is some logic in it giving out that winter fuel payment to all pensioners could be seen as overly generous and you know we've heard from uh people we've interviewed out on the streets about about older people who are sitting on a very comfortable you know final salary pension uh Liv in very big houses absolutely do not need those payments and laugh about the fact that they're still being paid them so you know there was perhaps some Logic for scaling it down but as you say Rachel reev seems to have acted pretty rashly in doing it without having a proper impact assessment and I predict that there might be some sort of semi uturn in the days and weeks to come I doubt she'll go back on the idea altogether but we could see her changing the thresholds perhaps so more pensioners are entitled to Winter fuel payments or delaying the the the scrappage of winter fuel payments for these 10 million pensioners until at least this winter is over in the hope that energy prices end up going down next winter but it could end up being the first sort of major U-turn for this new government that's exactly that you you actually plucked that question from my brain thank you very much Olivia Utley um for bringing up to date on the mess that labor have created with the energy situation in this country um and is it going to be the first of flip flop starma we see as prime minister it's could be damned if he does damned if he doesn't really Charlie isn't it do do they go back on this policy now or do they water it down or do they just ignore the the upro it's caused yeah I think um they're going to have to at some point because of just the the the push back and the backlash that there's been uh on the back of it um because it's been a um uh tet time I think for the first couple of months I mean I would say that wouldn't I but you know well you would absolutely yes but and talking about the lack of impact assessment I mean I know s has just passed 50 days one day uh more than the former prime minister but let's not forget the reason why she sort of you know to sort of bailouts because of the way in which she sort of handled the economy by not having the OB impact assessments on some of her economic policies so you would have thought you'd learn from uh uh the former prime minister predecessor but one that you just surpassed in terms of a record number of days so I think there will be some changes coming down the line for sure do do you think Peter they need to do something now this is called so much anger certainly amongst you know groups for older people who are saying people are going pensioners are really going to suffer in this one the problem is the size of the group um affected and where you draw the means test you know 10 million people affected and everyone remember in a brief history the winter fuel allowance is universal like a GB appointment it introduced by Gordon Brown but there are um comfortable middle class pensioners and then a few outliers like Alan sugar you know successful businessman saying why am I getting this Universal payment from the state uh I think it does come down to uh where you draw the threshold for the means test so I must say Olivia stole my thunder slightly because the two she's still at doing that she's very good job the two things I wrote on a piece of paper are here defer it for a year on a basis the economy and fuel prices might be different in 12 months time or adjust the means test and Martin lewi who's not party political he's a consumer expert has suggested one where you draw the means test uh differently so more people would receive the payment and one option is you do it around C Council um tax banss there's a lot of anger as well this happens at the same time as the unions seem to be getting literally everything they ask for you know above inflation Rises um and it's going to trigger more unions going well actually if asev have got that why can't we have that as well I think that's absolutely right and look I think it plays into the you know something that a lot of conservatives and something that I've been saying and lots of other people saying for a long time that you know K St is not a politician you know he's OB probably a very good DPP probably a very good manager probably very good uh at lots of things but there is no strategy within this government you know on day one you know they released prisoners there was this exit of prisoners releasing they're now to bang up a load well we've had in the the first two months a number of prisoners being released the winter fuel payment being scrapped taxes being admitted that they're going to have to go up enage bills are going up more strikes ahead announced on the back of union pay deals so labor government in the pockets of the trade unions uh inflation up and scrapping Rwanda uh a deterrent on day one which is supposed to solve one of the biggest issues that this country faces which is illegal migration that just shows that this government has got no strategy it doesn't know what it it's doing uh it's flying by the seat of its pants and that's why many many people when they see and they're not involved in politics like we are they will see big pay going to their union bosses their union pay masters whilst at the same time taking away from hardworking and hardpressed pensioners that is not a good look that is a labor government's record and they'll pay the price I think uh maybe in a few years time pretty damning um verdict on 50 days of K stama there from Charlie what do you think Peter yes I think it wrong wrong in nearly every sentence so for example labor said set La said we'll settle the strikes and they've begun to settle the unions announced more strikes the very next day Ln the a union I've voted again or said that they will go on strike let's let me give you another example from Trade union disputes doctors asked for 35% and the labor government said no so they didn't get it let's talk about prisons as Charlie raised that so we've had 14 years of conservative government there aren't enough prison places so whose thought is that let's put our thinking caps on 14 years of a conservative government a Justice secretary including Michael Gove who Charlie used to work for why are they not enough Justice secretary I must why are they not enough prison places is that down to the Milkman is it down to Tony Blair or is it down to conservative government well the answer is I mean of course they been Fades I'm not going to get away from that over the 14 years but you don't just let out a load of prisoners on day one since you come into office only then uh to start banging up people for you know shouting a few things on on on the streets you know um I find it quite difficult that you know the government was a this government was able to FastTrack things that happened over the weekend and it yet took so long to bang up people like those just up boil uh protesters that have you know caused a breakdown in National infrastructure that have stopped ambulances going to see people that are in critical need you know it just goes back to my my first point that this is not a a government that has a strategy it is the prime minister is not a politician he doesn't understand uh what the public are sort of you know going to be facing particularly when you're taking away uh money from pensioners particularly when it it gets colder we're not we're seeing summer a lack of summer in August you know what we're going to see in the winter this will be something that I really do think will affect the the government in the long term Peter I mean Charlie's always very pleasant but a lot of voice said he laughable take take the Randa scheme which I think is is morally wrong anyway regardless of the impact but if there were any impact had it gone ahead the Randa scheme I think would have said around 100 people not a thousand not 10,000 but it was a deterrent it was people 100 people if that is Success you know then I'm a banana well we saw we saw people crossing the channel not so long saying thank you k for scrapping Rwanda that is the you know that is the reality that this does cut through even though you couldn't send maybe the thousands of people back to Rwanda of course you couldn't but it was a deterrent would conservative centera well it would have stopped it would have it would well it would have been a well you know because I'm afraid because the leave government the came in scrapped on day one no no could it would have those flights would have taken off they would have been DET I'm sure of it they would have been even Char tring up zero people Center arounder under the conservatives you know if that's success then well we're running out of time unfortunately but Liz trust lasted 49 days and was dobbed forever the lettuce what vegetable would you pick for K St after 50 days oh um Peter same question so I always try and be pleasant people I think comparing anyone to a vegetable is not kind regardless of party a be a beaten be something like that that's a bit but thank you very much for now gentlemen um
