The Hat and Beard Show is live! Recapping Lions vs. Rams Week 1 matchup

let me see if I can change it oh okay gotcha all right guys well apparently we're going to have to do it like this tonight because I hit the wrong button and that is super not okay but it is what it is let's make sure the chat stuff is all situated here going on I don't know if this is even right well anyway we're going to talk about the Lions week one performance against the LA Rams I don't know how many stayed up last night to watch that got a little overtime special a little bit of extra credit for us to go ahead and watch on a Sunday night great way to start your week getting stay of play on a Sunday night to watch some ball luckily I get to work second shift however I did miss a good chunk of the game I was trying to watch it while driving and listen to it while I was at work but guys hat and boobs came through in the clutch when I was trying to uh come inside there come you know race from my truck to the house was about the time overtime started and uh she opened the door for me and already had a couple beers out ready for me to go so I was able to literally just step right in the house and be able to pick right up at the game so that was a nice little touch and Hulu had only lagged me out a couple of seconds I wasn't really that far behind but we did get to observe a good chunk of the game got to listen to a majority of the game I'll give you guys my thoughts here on what I seen uh if you haven't already smash like if you like the content that we provide subscribe to the channel if you want to stick around for it for a little bit more and if you really really like what we do go ahead and turn on notification so you never miss out on any of the hot fire reactions we got coming at you defensively y'all I I admit that to start the game well right after the game I was a little not too hype about our defensive performance I thought Aaron Glenn's defense was maybe in my head a little too built up to be something that it wasn't again we were missing DJ reader and our safety room was a little light uh I felt like there were plays that could have been made that were missed opportunities that were missed um and then I also feel that our defense got a little gassed come the end of the third quarter however when you take a step back and look at the production that we were able to mitigate the LA Rams from having right yeah they moved up and down the field but we have a good bend but don't break philosophy uh similar to how we beat the Rams in the playoffs last year when they got into the Red Zone our defense clamp down was able to I'm not going to say shut out but keep the Rams out of the red zone for a good majority of the game force field goals and of course Kirby Joseph came through with an absolutely clutch int I believe it was in the third quarter there that kind of helped you know change the tide of the game a little bit because at one point they had scored 17 unanswered points on us I mean we jumped out to a nice 17-3 lead over the Rams and you know the one takeaway that I was really just fuming about post game was the fact that when the Rams were down so many players on their offensive line our pass rush was close but not getting there right and I was like where is this pass rush why isn't this happening and then you got to look at it well it's because all Stafford did was throw short passes like I felt Teran Arnold played a good game he had a couple BS uh in hey with Daniel Barry sports highlights what's up Daniel Barry sports highlights appreciate you sticking around man uh hanging out with us uh normally I got the camera flipped but to be honest dude I was in the middle of doing stuff and I kind of just like cobbled this stream together tonight um and I forgot to hit the orientation on my on my phone so we're trying to we're trying to Jam this in during my lunch break um hope you're doing great tonight buddy if you like what we do subscribe to the channel um hit like on the video If you appreciate what we're doing um and I was concerned that our pass rush wasn't necessarily getting home but you look at Short passes that they were using as similar to a run game almost like a spread style offense Cooper cup although having uh what was it like 14 catches still had only like 100 yards or something like that it it wasn't really he averaged like 8.6 yards per catch people are kind of beating up on Terry and Arnold for a couple BS pass interference calls uh one was a little ticky tacky one was pretty legit um and you're also asking Teran Arnold to cover Cooper Cup who was a one-time Triple Crown winner in the NFL uh offensive player of the year and has a Hall of Fame trajectory at this current career path now all offseason I've been talking about the difference between Teran Arnold and Jeff okuda situation where Jeff okuda was forced into the role to cover a number one wide receiver whereas tyan Arnold earned that right and I thought tyan Arnold did a great job so my qu what I'm keep taking away from the tyon Arnold thing is imagine if that was Jeff okuda and not teron Arnold and how [ __ ] his brain would be because Jeff okudo wasn't structurally sound and mentally sound the way tyon Arnold is if tyon Arnold wasn't ready for that spot and those lights to be on him at that point you bet your bottom dollar there is no way that Motor City Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes are going to put him out in a situation where he's going to catastrophically and psychologically fail considering how much Capital that we put into the guy I mean he was a first round pick and we did trade up in front of a division rival to snag him and of course we doubled up we did see a brief a little bit of uh Enis rra Jr get a little bit of run uh not many plays to be made the majority of the plays most of the tackles obviously we've talked about Alex anzalone had or we didn't talk about but everybody's been talking about it Alex anzelone had 14 tackles Jack Campbell had a real quiet seven tackle day uh we only got a couple of sacks on Stafford Hutch only got one I was hoping he would have three one early one late um and it was Levi anzer that started the sack happy day for the Lions I say sack happy but he was the first one to get home for the Lions recording the first sack of the season and you really love to see Levi Levi enzer ow Owens on I'm we're just going to keep saying the way I've been saying Levi on zarque uh getting getting productive time and getting home making a set considering the career that he has had so far and the injuries that he's had to deal with the back injury spinal fusion is a hell of a situation ation to be in and to be able to come back and produ not only play at the NFL in the NFL but play at a high level recording a sack against at the time starting off the starting offensive line for the LA Rams they weren't as dinged up as they were that you know is a good it's a good thing to have M wingu had a nice couple SP Splash plays I think Makai wingu is going to be very very very very special in this in the league I think he's going to be one of those guys that you look back on and they go how did this dude fall so far in the draft and and and how was it that Brad Holmes knew to take on this guy well Brad Holmes just knows these things man he just does these things and I think he's going to be a boon to our defense it's projected that we'll have reer back next week for the Buccaneers which is a great thing because uh it adds a big wide ass and a fat body right in the middle of that defensive line to help eat up some blockers eat up a little bit of the of the the chip blocks coming down on Hutch uh maybe it allows Marcus Davenport I thought had a great game I think he really really stepped up although he was one of the guys I was looking at mostly who started to get a little gasp come the end of the game that's totally expected of him though because you know he's had injuries last season he didn't play much if any in the preseason so a lot of these guys And even Chris Collinsworth we'll just talk about that douchebag here in a little bit uh even he you know rightfully pointed out that week one of the NFL is incredibly difficult for guys to get into because they haven't had the conditioning let alone overtime week one Sunday night prime time but we push through we able to get it I'm glad that we won the kickoff uh or won the coin toss to get the ball back because I'm pretty sure if our defense had to roll out there You' have seen something very similar to what we did to the Rams get done to us because it was a a battle of attrition it was a a fatigue game and we when it when [ __ ] meant elbows our offense has had more in the tank than their defense did but to wrap up talk about the defense you know um that game could the game could have gone a lot differently I think Brian Branch missed one tackle that that everybody's seen that that missed tackle on Brian Johnson that he uh Brian Branch said he's not going to miss any more tackles like that um that that's just the rumor coming out of the locker room and he was maybe a accumulated 4 Ines away total between two passes for getting an interception right like like Brian branch is out there and Johnny on the spot making plays and he was so close to making Big Splash plays I think that give the defense give the coaching staff uh you know week one and week two you're still trying to figure out the identity of the team we learned a lot about this team we learned a lot about the defense week one we learned a lot about the grit of the team as a whole in week one so we week one and week two you're still trying to figure out where you're at but you do want to see a significant amount of cleanup you know not so many penalties keep developing Terry and Arnold uh your safety room should get healthier once ify malanu comes back that will unlock Brian Branch to be able to play in a numerous you know various areas of the field allow him to really be Unleashed uh Ami Robertson played really really well uh I I love the depth that we have at cornerback right now Carlton Davis was phenomenal uh considering that last year a number one corner was courland sutt Cameron Sutton not courtand Sutton Cameron Sutton and we put a lot of eggs in that basket I myself on this channel was guilty of being way too high on Cameron Sutton's free agent acquisition last year he was a total dud it was nice to see competent and athletic players be in and lock down not lock down but play really well against Elite level wide receivers now the news coming out is pukan akua is on IR I think is what I seen with a sprained PCL so you don't like to see a guy hurt although that did benefit the Detroit Lions was really able to give Matt Stafford one one solid Target that we all knew he was going to go to and then a various different guys that at times could be taken advantage of you know take advantage of our defense But ultimately our defense was really able to lock it down in the red zone and although you hate to see yardage and you much would rather have Madden statistics for your defense is just the number one ranked defense and you're just forcing three and outs constantly or you're getting takeaways and you're hit getting sacks all the time that's just not the reality of the game our defense clamps down in the Red Zone limits the amount of damage done even even Forces teams into especially because it seems that when when teams are playing the Lions now coaches seem to think that they need to be like Dan Campbell and try and go for it so it kind of baits teams into making them potentially have an uh an opportunity for a mistake that we can capitalize on by not Breaking Inside the red zone and honestly as long as people stay healthy with the return of DJ reader Marcus Davenport gets his lungs back Josh Pascal continues to evolve Aiden Hutchinson you know either gets home or they throw flags on the blatant Holdings and tripping play penalties that should have been called uh you're going to see the defense continue to evolve throughout the next couple of weeks before we really figure out where we're at the nice thing is that the evolution from where we are to where we're going to be is already you know magnitude higher than where we were last year this defense is projecting out right now from what I seen week one playing against a high caliber opponent it's good things it's good things when you really step back and look at it um I liked what I seen and then add some more depth and get some health back on defense you should be rocking and rolling uh offensively offensively it was a little bit a different story um you know it seems that uh we still haven't first of all seems like we still haven't gotten that third quarter monkey off our back where we just refus to put up points in the third quarter and we just love to let teams we love to play down I guess to teams Talent our opposition's talent level or you know the opposition is making such Dynamic halftime adjustments and we are either over adjusting or not adjusting enough to where they come out and they're able to just lock us down routinely because this has been a trend now with the Dan Campbell Administration or the Dan Campbell regime of inability to put points up in the third quarter now if your defense is stopping teams for putting points up in the third quarter that's great you can get away with it and just continue to score in the fourth quarter unfortunately when the Rams go and just score 17 unanswered points in the second half on you not putting up any points in the third quarter really opens the door for your opponent to catch back up to you I did not really like that so much though again similar to the defense when you step back and look at the game from a whole our offense was incredibly limited our offense did not have a tremendous amount of time on the field when we were out there the St the LA Rams had a plan right Sha McVey and Company said we are not going to be beat over the middle and we are not going to let Aman ra and Sam laapa have their way with us we are going to make Jared gof figure out a way to beat us some way some other way we are not going to let amanra do amanra things and we are going to bottle up Sam Port as much as we possibly can and they were very successful at that everybody's very concerned cuz amanra had what two or three catches for less than 10 yards yes you should be concerned about that however he was still making plays although not being the play maker right that batted down pass that could have been an interception that was a heads up play on his behalf still blocking downfield being a tough nose gritty Wide Receiver right Sam leapor gets knocked out of not knocked out of the game but taken out of the game plan based down defensive adjustments he makes a couple of nice plays we targeted him once in the end zone early on so what did we do what did Dan Campbell Brad Holmes and Jared gof do well they said we have all of these other weapons to beat you with we can Pound The Rock on you with David Montgomery we can Pound The Rock on you with jir Gibbs we can throw the ball short and Scat back out with jir Gibbs we can now now finally finally now we can put our faith in J right the hype has been around J all off season that it's been the best offseason of his career he put on five pounds of of mass right not a fat but basically of lean muscle mass he's been he's now had a full offseason to work with Jared Goff Jared Goff and him have a report Jared Gau trusts J and we're finally able to go okay check it out we have all all of these other ways that we can beat you J had a nice I'm I don't want to say a Breakout game because that's saying that that's the kind of a high water mark for him I'd like to say that this was a floor setting game for him excuse me I think J Mo finally proved to everybody exactly what we all knew he could be when we drafted him although he was hurt and although he's had career speed bumps it was just an epic thing to see J Mo just when the balls in his hands to take over the game right and then you know offense kind of sputtered here or there it was really unfortunate to see early on our offensive line namely two veteran players Taylor Decker get manhandled by Jared verse now Jared verse I think is going to be a very special player in this league okay I think that guy does have a chance if he play continues to play at this level to be Defensive Rookie of the Year I'm going to be honest that dude is very electric uh he just straight manhandled Taylor Decker unfortunately Decker's getting up there in age maybe he got a little bit of athleticism smoked on him again you've seen along the entire offensive line Not Just Jared uh uh Taylor Decker a little bit of rust on everybody right you seen Uh Kevin zitler get get just just just abused for that sack early on now that is a couple different things number one that was a great stunt call by the defensive coordinator that was a that was was a perfectly timed defensive call against a perfect [ __ ] storm for the offense to be taken advantage of it's also Kevin zitler was hurt during the off season so he did have a little bit of recovery time wasn't able to get in during OTAs uh really start his conditioning get height get get I don't want to say get hyp but get integrated into this offense and that's my third point is Kevin zitler and Pen Su have never played together before so there isn't that understanding of what one is going to do with the other like there was with graham Glasgow who played a season and a half at the Right Guard spot next to pen there is going to be a few communication mishaps a few uh misreads between the two early on but you know they're going to clean it up right however on the whole I did not like to see as much pressure as Jared G was seeing I didn't like seeing Jared gof get sacked at all considering we're supposed to have the best offensive line in football we do have the best rushing offense line in football because man we were really able to just take chunk plays on the ground and it nothing was better than in overtime right there's a few reasons why the overtime Ser situation was great but one it showed you the grittiness of the team right it showed not only did were we lucky it was Lady Luck on our side and we were able to get the ball and just bully our way down the field uh but you seen our offensive line dig deep and say look we're just going to win this game for us right what just follow all the big fat ass all them big fat asses all five of them fat asses in front of you just let them push the defense back give David Montgomery who I thought had disappeared for the majority of the game it felt like we were going with jir Gibbs heavy over David Montgomery come to find out that was only the most beneficial thing we could have done because at the time in overtime when you bring in David Montgomery who can squat almost 1,000 PBS okay I'm not exaggerating um he was borderline fresh he was borderline just starting his game all over again ready to go he was completely fresh ready to go and you've seen his physicality in combination with the offensive Line's physicality brutalize and just beat the [ __ ] breaks off the LA Rams defense we just manhandled him in every aspect that that final drive that that overtime Drive was just nothing but an ass whooping put on by the Detroit Lions offensive line and David Montgomery it was a master class of knowing exactly what to do by Ben Johnson exactly the place to call and the Personnel to put in to succeed for the time of the game knowing how to take advantage of weak spots the end round by K Raymond early on in the overtime was was was great to see because it hit him with a speed gadget Play that we hadn't used all game long I don't think we went Tom and RA in overtime it was mostly Montgomery Montgomery Montgomery Montgomery right you love to see it I was really pleased with it the best best part about that David Montgomery overtime touchdown was uh so I had a four-leg parlay laid out where I needed the Lions to win Monty to score J to score Monty to go over 53 yards and over 31 yards and all I was needing was two of them four Lions to win Monty Monty score J okay so that was two of the three I needed to hit apparently I can't count uh to hit a nice little parlay that cashed out pretty nicely that hey you know what hopefully we roll that into tonight and we have a success with a couple of different parlays that got laid out for the vik or the Jets 49ers game um anything else okay yeah so Brian Branch played real great super duper close on a couple ints I like where he's at I like the trajectory that he's on especially picking up basically where he left off last year just a little bit a little bit of uh little bit of rust from the offseason right but he also had he had surgery in the offseason along with the other safety we want to talk about Kirby Joseph doing Kirby Joseph things making a beautiful INT in the back of the end zone literally stealing the soul from Matthew Stafford right up from underneath him you absolutely love to see it Kirby Joseph did Kirby Joseph things tyon Arnold I thought tyan Arnold played well all things considered who he was matched up against the quarterback the wide receiver and the offensive minded Guru genius that is Shawn McVey I thought Teran Arnold played relatively well minus a couple of one one not great pass interference call other than that I thought Teran Arnold played well limited the yards after reception for Cooper Cup who is kind of the uh Yak king um Marcus Davenport played well all of our all of our Acquisitions and additions on defense I thought played really really well uh considering the situation that we were in um and minus DJ reer because he didn't play and last but not least fellas we're going to end on this uh how about Jake Jake big leg baits The Ballad of Jake Bates you know he wasn't asked to do big kicks and that's his thing he was asked to go out there and make clutch kicks and Jake Bates went out there and absolutely made just just clutch kick after clutch kick hit all his extra points hit a couple of field goals absolutely beautiful right the ballot of Jake baits continues the lions are now 1 and0 and the magnitude of this win is so enormous fellas like when it comes down to it you look at the way the Rams played you look at the way we played both teams are potentially more than likely going to win their division okay I'm just saying I'm not trying to poo poo on the Packers um the Bears defense looked absolutely ridiculous uh the Vikings Sam darnold's a quarterback so I I just just get out of here with that I I just kind of feel that what you seen tonight was the team who's going to win the NFC North the Detroit Lions and the team is going to win the NFC North with the LA Rams I don't think it's going to be the 49ers in fact I think the 49ers are going to lose tonight that's what I think is going to happen um I'm not taking the Niners to lose though I do have a long parlay out on alt line stats because that's kind of my thing is playing the alt line so if everything hits plus the bonus I can make a cool couple $20,000 hey that's a 10 like parlay we're not here to talk about that we're here to talk about the magnitude of the win this could give us a one game Advantage for HomeField advantage in the number one seed heading into the NFC playoffs potentially let's not count all our ducks before they chickens here fellas we got a long season ahead of us we need to clean some things up we need to clean up the penalties clean up the offensive line get a little bit more aggressive on defense DJ reader is going to make a massive impact Alan R st Brown don't worry about his lack of production guys I there's there's there is set before a table with far too many options and they managed to just say you guys can't eat this dish well we got a whole [ __ ] table full of [ __ ] that are ready to eat so comment down below uh like
