uh of growth in the off season when you look at just what she can provide and then another change at the backline Dempsey Brown slides to the inside you know have Zara Shoshi out on the right underway in Winston Salem with a game that could turn out to be critical to both teams postseason hopes Mississippi State of course in Maroon attacking right to left in this first half south to North and Wake Forest all in white at home two wins and a draw on the season Tony Delo made it a point to up the difficulty of their non-conference schedule five away games including at ruter they tied that game he wanted of course to win all of them and then had their flight get canceled and had to drive back overnight so the mission for non-conference plays get that RPI as high as possible you bring in a team Mississippi State Morgan coming off their best season ever and I also really like the decision to play not just a a strong RPI team or a rank team but to play an SEC team because we've talked a lot about just the shift that we've seen in the SEC and and the level of play so this is something that wake could definitely see in the postseason if they make it to the NCAA tournament so it kind of checks off a couple different boxes and we know they'll see a different style of play a little more athletic that three back system so it's a very good test for Wake Forest and and like we said they need the result we watched the UNCC game with Glenn and Casey glad you stayed with us another win for North Carolina they they make it exciting though this new look Carolina team as that cross is deflected away for a Wake Forest corner kick in the early going early on already getting in that 1 V one position she's so dangerous on the ball and they'll look for her for some service once she's able to get in line Emily Morris one of the seniors honored before the game they have 15 seniors wake for us so they have to spread out deliver the corner on a Mississippi State Defense that has not given up a goal this year punched Away by Matty Anderson the followup is in Just 2 minutes in Wake Forest has broken Mississippi State streak and has the lead in its biggest non-conference outing of the Year Abby Colton starts it [Music] [Applause] off that went for a score by number 33 Colton well it's Abby Colton in her second start of the season a really good ball played in it's the initial pressure from Hannah Johnson on the goalkeeper and and Colton's exactly where she needs to be on the backside look at the work done here from Johnson she gets in past her Defender nobody is on that backside from Mississippi State they have to be aware of that player cuz that's an easy tap in for Colton that demon Deon go what a start for wi Forest both of these teams so sound defensively averaged less than a goal allowed last year and both of them bring back almost everybody so to get a goal two minutes in completely changes it at the other end Maggie wodsworth trying to respond oh great defense as pton kill got some help to clear that one away fast-paced start to this one [Applause] Hannah Johnson of Mississippi State number 11 on the near side on the ball not to be confused with Hanah Johnson of Wake Forest number 20 will help you keep them straight and it's a Thro in for the Bulldogs here in the early going is ruthne mataran Haitian International was at the Women's World Cup last year number 26 in maroon and that pass goes a it'll turn over to Wake Forest that was a good response there from Wake Forest cuz I'm curious with Shoshi out wide and brown sliding in the middle that initial long ball that put some pressure on the back line that's where some communication just needs to come into play and those two were in slightly different spots earlier this season so they were able to to get back on top of it but that's an area that if I'm Mississippi State I'm going to continue to go up that left side of the field and see if I can play Wadsworth and behind as well I mean they were in different spots last game right Thursday to start the game Dempsey Brown was wide right Zara chavoshi was inside but they played much of last year with brown inside and Shoshi outside and they've made that switch again today and it doesn't seem like that big of a difference when those players are playing next to each other but it is different roles especially when you think on the attacking end and in different responsibilities so to make that shift I do think they'll continue to play into the game and find that Rhythm but it it is slightly different it's another change Emily Murphy playing out wide for Wake Forest right here 35 on the ball with the Captain Zar band English born plays internationally for Ireland and she'd been the number nine but Hannah Johnson's been so good I mean even Emily Murphy said to Tony Delo she's got to be on the field yeah that was an interesting conversation because Wake Forest isn't it's it's a good problem to have right because you have so many options but it does force some players into different positions but I think the way he spoke about Murphy and how she handled that she wants what's best for the team and and you know you're going to have Murphy on the field you need her on the team for on the field for you if you're awake and she's willing to do what's best Mississippi State on the attack this is there Hannah Johnson dealing with two good work by Kai Hanks coming back to help well the long ball runs all the way to the Mississippi State goalkeeper Matty Anderson you know every goalkeeper starts to hear secretly in the back of their mind they're saying no goals every game the entire season 3 minutes into the game your fourth game of the season finally that that dream broke for mty Anderson but for Wake Forest you couldn't have asked for a better start knowing you need a result to be able to have that quick quick goal especially knowing they also wanted to be better better on set pieces Ali Perry left footed cross bouncing all over the place and well cleared confidently by Mina in the end for a Mississippi State corner corner kick up coming for Mississippi State see the long row of Wake Forest players and you finally get to Tony to we actually saw him smile before the game it did happen doesn't happen often during the game [Music] though first corner for Mississippi State lot of traffic driven low and deflected away Colton Abby got in the way the older of the twins there's Macy Hodge sliding around and it is finally believe whistled as a foul to be free kick coming out for Wake [Music] fores there's Tony Delo hit 300 wins last year and has again Morgan a lot of difficult decisions because you bring back everybody almost everybody and there's so much experience on this roster he's still trying to figure out the right spots for everybody well you bring back everyone and then you also add in Emily transferring from North Carolina joining the team with her sister so yeah it's a fantastic problem to have but it it was really interesting talking to him because there are big decisions that have to be made and it might depend on you know who's who's in better form at the moment or also who the opponent is haven't settled on a goalkeeper yet but this is Payton kahill's third start in four games on side is the decision here Wadsworth out wide cross dealt with well by Dempsey Brown at the back and now Kai Hanks took that Touch Too Far 23 is Elana is kiero part of that holding Midfield with Macy Hajj Alexis goodier the right center back inside for Hajj [Music] Mississippi State really getting numbers forward right the wing backs are outside midfielders are really up by the forwards in this look well and it works well for them when you have three back system those Wing backs do they do a lot of work in that in between but when you're pushing forward they they can get forward on the front line and and almost almost match up four on four with the wake back line and then all the players that they have forward and and it also in turn brings their line of Confrontation higher the wig Forest out to the early lead here Abby Colton goal just a minute 58 seconds into the game coming from a corner kick somewhere Wake Forest had been looking for more efficiency and Jonathan it didn't work out but the ball from Ann's brow that was just played forward to Murphy is a fantastic way to beat that higher press and higher line of Confrontation because she's almost able to skip over her first option in a pass she went forward up to Murphy who played it back that fin ball didn't connect but I do expect to see more of that from Wake as they build up great ball movement to beat the Press there but Macy Hodge took it away you can see the work rate of Emily Murphy charging that one down James Armstrong now in his sixth year as the head coach of Mississippi State studied abroad at the University of North Carolina he's English born and his first real job was as an equipment manager for US soccer we're talking in under 19 World Cup equipment manager and he's risen all the way up to the head coach in a a situation this is the best they've ever been highest in their rankings top dra soccer actually had him at 11 this week and reached the round of 16 last year comes at the back and Emily Murphy just forced her to really turn it over well and looking at just what they've been able to do in the last six seasons I mean SEC win percentage NCAA tournament appearances which was a round of 32 and a sweet 16 and we had a really good conversation with James just talking about the momentum that can come with with that but also the work that has to go in because just because you make an NCAA tournament once it's not a given that you'll make it again and and it's enough work just to get there but to be able to continue progress your program that is that's hard and I think to be able to see what he's done those numbers really show the impact that he's made couple of tremendous passes from Mississippi States Hannah Johnson from Ali Perry but Martinez Montoya really didn't put a dangerous shot on in the end right at pton kill and I would love that ball from Martinez Montoya to actually come back across the six so rather than a shot can that be a cross cuz she had an option in the middle and the angle really closes down she also is kind of leaning back from the ball so you know she's not able to step all the way through with some power Abby Colton threaded that pass for chosi Hannah Johnson of Wake Forest is on side comes trying to charge her down play across the Box wide at the back post as Wake Forest continues to threaten we see why Shoshi was put out on that right the way that she's able to get on Ball and then play it down to Johnson who does a fantastic job bringing that ball in a little bit out a diagonal She lays it right on a platter to Colton who just can't connect in a clean manner but you have to give credit to Combs the way that she closed space defensively she cut an angle as well to make that difficult for Johnson that was very well done from the center back for Mississippi State Riley combes a senior from Missouri her only career goal was an 88th minute game winner to give them their first NCAA tournament win ever nice resume line item they can't they can't take that away from you not not that big deal I mean that's a fantastic first goal I'll take it Wake Forest in front here second minute goal by Abby [Music] [Applause] Colton Emily Morris long ball second ball is still loose and Emily Colton won it for Wake again Macy hodj think we've heard that name a few times want it back but now wake with [Applause] it this is chosi another senior honored before the game some were in tears she got a good chuckle out of the pregame video for her Kai Hanks going in line had the cut back and is kiero recovering plays it out for a corner here comes a has done a nice job centrally being a defensive presence she dropped in with Johnson when she checked into the ball and then kept her run going so she's able to to stop that cross from Hanks but once again you're seeing the work that K Hanks can do one-on-one and the way that she can get in line she's so quick it just takes one step and able to play that ball across doing the honors for Wake for number 13 Emily Morris dealing with the bugs in this one we saw that before the game we saw her swatting one there first corner kick from Wake Forest produced The Game's goal Emily Morris delivers the second Anderson in traffic got that one away Wake Forest screaming for a handball there wasn't any real intent or advantage to that one it'll be a demon Deacon throw Shoshi look for Hannah Johnson it falls right to her what a stop MADD Anderson keeps Mississippi State in it absolute must save here here comes another Wake Forest corner kick well this is big time for Matty Anderson because it's a bad deflection off Combs right into the path of Johnson and it just takes that one touch comes was also a little slow to react to the deflection but that's big time for Matty Anderson keeping that one for Senor from Clear Falls High School in Texas parents have the RV drive up 9 hours to Starkville every game that's awesome she's been the starter since her freshman year but under a lot of pressure here third Corner coming in second ball Dives on it Hannah Johnson got a look but it looked like it took a [Applause] deflection Jonathan it's him it's a matter of time until Johnson knocks one in that is the the third Corner that's gone right to the foot and or head of Hannah Johnson Mississippi state has to be able to get a player in front of her and they've got a challenge cuz she is the Target on the corners and they're connecting and it's just a matter of minutes until it connects to the back of the net it's no mystery right it's loaded up the six-yard box so there's traffic around the goalkeeper and aim for the player who's 6 feet tall and it's very effective with good service and she's she's not doing a ton of movement to get herself open she's just winning the aerial battle so Mississippi state has to to Mark her up and they really don't have to do a ton of movement it's just battling for that one in the [Music] air 16th minute in Winston Salem Wake Forest leads on an early goal from Abby Colton from a corner kick Mississippi state has had chances but slight Edge to Wake Forest so far Morgan yeah I think the The Possession has has been a bit more purposeful for Wake Forest I've honestly been a little surprised with the pace that I've seen I kind of expected both teams to knock it around a little bit more but it's been higher energy than I was expecting especially on a Sunday to be quite honest does that favor Mississippi State I do think it does yeah when it's a little bit faster paced because we know both teams want to possess but that's what really plays into the strengths of weight Force when they are able to hold the ball knock it around one thing we were expecting coming into the game is we were talking about how much will Malika Mina control middle of the field and move the ball from side to side for Wake Forest quite frankly I don't think she's touched the ball much because it's been that faster pace so when it does settle down it definitely plays more into to favor for the deak so right now even with Mississippi State being down one this is the type of game that they would prefer this is Emily Murphy usually up in the middle but she will drop off when she plays I actually like this this roll getting her facing goal as she drives that one wide now our first ACC Network women's volleyball match of the Season should be a good one SMU and number two Nebraska on Moody magic night in Dallas crowds going to be rocking that'll be Tuesday September 3rd 8 Eastern 7 Central as SMU among those coming into the ACC this year against Nebraska in volleyball that starts September 3rd [Applause] Hannah Johnson trying to turn fouled by isero free kick in a dangerous spot for Wake [Music] Forest they'll bring Morris over from left back she's taken the three corners that have been dangerous I think you know both teams as so often happens list set pieces among their keys and so far big advantage to Wake Forest in that department as Kai Hanks looks like shooting this [Music] one well Hanks could even be an option to roll wide and then play it across but doesn't look like that's where wake is heading yeah she's left footed that's the ball they're looking for got an open look ball ended up rolling to ad Anderson there was a brief claim for a handball and there is a player still down is KERO for Mississippi State and we'll get a stoppage to check on her I don't know how much the dummy run of Morris did in terms of opening up the defense or changing their marks but there was there were several players open on that delivery well and it looks like is kiero and ANS brow get a bit caught up when this ball comes in it was the second one off the Touch from Murphy not much was created from that original dummy and it's buckon and his Koo that Collide a bit there you see is kiero the Colombian International back on her feet everybody everybody took the opportunity to get water and is kiero among those helped Columbia to the Olympic quarterfinals in Paris they'd never been that far she was regular in the lineup for that team and they said hey she even kept in touch wanted to know what was going on in Starkville while she's in the middle of the Olympics and what a great experience and to to come back to the Collegiate level having played on such a big stage but something that really stood out to me that James Armstrong said is when she was back she was full on Mississippi State she was ready for the season ready to go and and it was a great experience but she was turning the page and was ready for to make her impact with her [Music] [Applause] [Applause] team so Martinez Montoya 29 is up top now for Mississippi State Zoe Maine came in not based on the injury came in and replaced wodsworth so little Personnel reshuffling moves Olivia buckon higher up the field Hannah Johnson is on side being closed down ball still loose and driven over the top by Hanks for a goal kick what a couple of threats Wake Forest has gotten down this right side and it's another buildup that starts from the back it's brown on the ball and then she looks to play forward once again it's Shoshi she beats her first player and it's a really nice slip [Applause] [Music] ball e e Mississippi State on the attack here offside flag stayed down Hannah Johnson's cross controlled by Ali Perry and she fires it over the top for Mississippi State apologies if we lost you for a couple of minutes there but all good at Spry stadium in Winston Salem for fans of Wake Forest leading one- nothing in this one theame for Mississippi State number 19 Kennedy HBS we'll save the Hannah Hannah Johnson confusion for later as she comes out delivered this cross though well and this opportunity came because it wasn't a great clearance from week Forest it's Mina who gets a touch on it but Colton can't get to the ball first so then you have Perry just able to step in misses frame but that's a good opportunity for Mississippi State and I think right now that's where they're going to get most of their opportunities is can they pick that ball up from the decks in a in a dangerous position Kennedy husbands replacing Olivia buckton here husbands true freshman from Texas where they recruit a lot James Armstrong coached Region 3 ODP and coached in Texas so he's got a good pipeline going there they said most of the freshman and transfers came in in the spring but Kennedy husbands who's not in your picture right now but she's at left wing back was one who just came in in August and already she's one pushing for playing time Emily Colton won it for Wake Forest K Hanks being harassed by Perry got it away we were curious what this Midfield shape of Wake Forest would look like Morgan and I talking before the game they've been a lot in a 4-33 with only one deeper lying midfielder this seems really 42 31 Abby Colton and Malika Mina are both holding from what I see well it's also like a 4111 three cuz you kind of have Mina sitting a little bit deeper Abby Colton is is just a touch higher and then Emily Colton is the one kind of right behind those Front Runners who's really creating and pushing towards the back line so yes I think the sophisticated way way to say it would be a four a 433 but could look a little bit different too maybe like a a 1111 in the Midfield there's K Hanks at the game tying goal at ruter again they wanted to beef up the non-conference schedule at army at ruter they're going to go at Iowa at Villanova make sure that RPI is as good as possible because last year they finished sixth in the ACC qualified for the AC and yet didn't make the NCA Morgan This is Wild a team finishing top six in the ACC not making it but RPI in the 70s they had these games that they tied that got away from them when we've talked about it so much but it's true it's just not being able to get those results I also think to if there was overtime we know that there's not extra time anymore but maybe what would have happened in some of those games that were draws fourth W Forest Corner the first from that left side proved not as dangerous as the others just yet that cross puts Anderson under pressure and a firm catch this time but I mean people tune in and say it's August what are you doing talking about the NCA tournament and RPI and all this this matters you can't head into conference play with a 70 RPI and and and totally make up for it well it definitely matters and and we've talked a lot about almost how how strange it is to see his team make it in the ACC tournament and not incaa but when you get a point from a draw you're you're missing those points that could have been wins when it comes to the RPI status but obviously you get a point so it helps you conference play but yeah these games matter and we talk a lot about non-conference is one season regular season is another and then season postseason is the third but this really does have important implications on what the postseason can look like especially with a big uh one of the biggest games with a ranked opponent so Wake Forest does have to get a result and I think they're they're looking at this to see how they adjust to the the style of play for Mississippi State and can they put their chances away obviously early on they were able to prove that can they con consistently continue to to maintain possession and play their game as the 90 goes on I think that's the biggest question for them as they look for the result of course if you're a fan of college sports you know about the realignment by now how will it affect soccer the ACC women are still having only the top six make the tournament which is going to be crazy competitive as we get a hydration break here with Wake Forest leading Mississippi State one nothing we'll tell you about more of those changes we'll bring you more first half action when we come back to Winston Salem one- nothing wake leads it's time for a new era of Monday night a command center version of Boston College and Florida State four different camera angles realtime player and team stats every game of course available in the ESPN app so you can watch it wherever you are so glad you're with us on acc Network this afternoon Jonathan Yardley Morgan Bowen in Winston Salem with you and Wake Forest leads Mississippi State one- nothing on an Abby Colton goal very early a minute 58 into the game and nothing further has separated the teams just yet Mississippi State coming off of a sweet 16 appearance last year ranked 20th in the country by the coaches 3 and0 in the year with a win over Baylor under their belts already comes in as you again technically the ranked team in the matchup Wake Forest also returning everybody from a team that reached the ACC tournament certainly didn't feel like an [Applause] underdog temperature mid 80s and sunny the teams agreed on the hydration breaks before the game so we expect those in both halves and e well we're back with you 28th minute apologies for that Wake Forest in the lead so the ACC women are up to 17 teams now only six make the ACC tournament SEC took the opposite approach they're up to 16 teams now and 12 of the 16 will make the tournament up from 10 out of 14 so Texas and Oklahoma coming in to the SEC tweaks their postseason ACC men will just have all 15 play Emily Colton On The Run Emily Colton Emily Murphy and Emily Morris all in the same side of the field Emily Murphy is the one who's tripped up and wins a free kick maybe a yellow card here as well and it is for Alexis [Applause] Gutierrez senior from Brentwood California oh this is really great work on that left side from Murphy she has that ball fo it is so tight to her that just when she takes that that touch around Gutierrez it pulls her down really well done on the dribble and this is something too by her drifting to that wide spot it puts her more in these 1V one channels on the flank so she's able to just get right at Defenders and then look to cut in Murphy of course started at North Carolina couple years there and then transferred to wake and now it's big part of this team holds it there couple of fakes Emily Colton played it low and Matty Anderson safe hands scooped that one up well it well we knew Wake Forest was working on set pieces and they're they're a little crafty here and you see Colton on the ball she's due for a goal just looks to line that one up I think she probably could have taken another touch gotten a little bit closer just to draw a Defender but she's a player once she gets on that score sheet you know the goals will just continue to come and she's still still looking for that one El mastan in up top for Mississippi State their third different forward of the game in that Central lone Striker spot whereas wake has been able to rely on its Hannah Johnson all afternoon [Music] theel Wagner come in now as well Mississippi state was at Charlotte on Thursday and made the drive up but we told you Hannah Johnson steady ever present in the middle of the field for Wake Forest after pretty much forcing her way into the lineup and we are blessed with with two Hannah Johnson's in this game there's four Hannah Johnson's actually in D1 side soccer that that I found doesn't mean there aren't more and we' we've got two of them so again Hannah Johnson for Mississippi state is 11 in maroon and Hannah Johnson for Wake Forest is 20 in white and if you need other ways to tell them apart we came up with with a little list for you supply chain Logistics on one side engineering on the other but the best Morgan Morgan Johnson Hannah Johnson from Miss State collects shark teeth and the whole family does it I love it I think that's the best find y'all we're talking 30,000 shark teeth the family has collected as a [Music] group like Hannah Johnson from W great that you speak Spanish but shark teeth and Emily Murphy thinks she was fouled as she went for that header and informing Michael L and the referee about that at the [Applause] [Music] moment well Jonathan she's saying her Defender didn't even go for the ball this is a very nice ball across once again it's Hanks she's the one who sends it look at the bend how that comes back and Tails away towards Murphy and where she's going with her run she's not happy with the lack of a call there I think that's a difficult one to call if you're referee I don't think that is a foul there is there some contact yes should that have been called in my opinion no but it's a great ball from Hanks and Murphy's in the right place and that's a clear frustration put push from Emily Murphy saying if she doesn't have to go for the ball I don't either changes for Wake Forest in a couple of spots nichaela small number four who typically starts in the Midfield came off the bench today she's in Anna Swanson number 30 is in on the right and Sierra Scythe very attack exciting attacking player is in wide left for Wake Forest and Amaya Dawkins Number Two a freshman there're excited about in in the Midfield so trying to keep track of NCA soccer subs will give you a headache in a hurry but we hope we made it easy for you wake leads one nothing 32nd minute here is Malik AA looking for a switch of play Big switch finds swans I think Morgan we were thinking about that that was the first time that happened all game but we'll get back to that reminder oh we'll hold off on the sub okay so yeah we were wondering how much are they going to use Mina to switch the play that was really the first time and we're 33 minutes in that was the first time and it also was a big ball across I kind of expected to see her a little bit more checking to the ball rolling it to the other side of the field but this game has just shown itself to be a little bit more direct and wake for had a lot more success with the the back line finding that entry ball a lot of it has come from this right side with chiosi with Hanks getting forward and playing the entry pass into Johnson so yeah I do think also with the substitutions that came into play now it's opening up the game in a little bit of a different manner so I think we'll see Mina on the ball just a bit [Music] more Maya Dawkins missed one pass and turned it over there to Hannah Johnson of Mississippi State this is isero in the middle quickly close down by Nikki small she won it Alex Wood on the move for Wake Forest and the foul will go against Mississippi State Wake free Kick this is a good challenge in the middle it's actually a double down it's small who does the work to get back and puts her body in there and then gets pulled down you always wonder how people will handle coming off the bench when you're used to starting and it's going to happen again with the experience both these teams offer they're going to be lineup changes and you see nichaela small Waits 30 minutes to come into the game but instantly is buzzing around the ball and that's all you can really ask for because it is a bit of a different you're you're starting the game in a different Manner and it doesn't seem like much but if you're not there at the start to kind of work your way into the game when you come in as a substitute you have to inject that energy and I think that's exactly what she did and also for Forest yeah they might see this it happening to a couple different players depending on who the opponent is and today it was just small but a really nice job from her coming in and doing the work defensively as well the fifth corner of the game for Wake Forest four of them have been from this side and the other three were all very dangerous accounting good percentage Emily morrris of wakes nine shots on the day so Emily Morris the left back delivers again Anderson calls and catches not enough traffic in front of her she got a clear sight of that one that's also the first corner kick without Johnson so there's no the Target didn't seem as clear for Wake Forest and that was a pretty simple win for Anderson coming off her [Music] line Shoshi knocked that one away for Wake Forest mataran her pass picked off by Anna Swanson SE a couple of dangerous runs behind this three-w wom backline of Mississippi State Wake Forest unable to find them since Johnson left the game again Abby Colton's goal from a corner kick in the second minute has Wake Forest in front of a game that Tony Delo says we got to win these we got to win these and it's August it's it's strange to put that much pressure on but it's going to affect how their season goes they're on the attack here with Swanson and didn't get around the ball like she wanted to it's out for a goal kick Now reminder tomorrow night s Eastern six Central ACC Network grants you an all access pass to Syracuse football the final episode in this three-part series debuts tomorrow night you'll get neverbe seen footage and sound from Fran Brown and the orange players and coaches a look behind the scenes you can only get one place right here on a CC Network you actually see the earlier episodes in that series following our game this afternoon couple more changes for Mississippi State they don't have to worry about any flights after this one they have the big hail State charter bus went from Starkville to Charlotte trained in Charlotte on Friday traveled up here trained in the Winston Salem area yesterday and inesh Simas and price Le ER both in for Mississippi State 37th minute with wake leading Mississippi State one to nothing long ball here and Hannah Johnson of the Bulldogs is offside we told you Mississippi State came in three and0 hadn't given up a goal they'd given up nine shots Morgan in those three games 270 minutes nine shots total and in this half alone they've faced nine shots it's a step up in competition [Music] pton kahill with it at the back she's being pressured by Mississippi State right now she's also being pressured for this starting spot Paige nerkin started against Temple the other night and Valentina Amaral is just back from injury and Tony Delo says we have three really good goalkeepers they could all start for us it sounds like Morgan though he wants to pick one not going to do any of this 4545 split thing and kahill seems to have the inside track right now he spoke very highly though of all three but definitely seeing kahill out today it does make you think that she is the one who has more of that nod right now but he also didn't seem completely decided on who was going to be that starting goalkeeper kill eight starts last year instead of Matty Howard four shutouts and a 0.63 goals against average we told you was a very good defensive team Matty Howard has moved on starting for Michigan State now long ball doesn't amount to anything price leazer speaking of transfers went from Old Miss starter to UCF never got on the field for UCF we don't know too much about what went on there she got her degree in December and came right back to her home state but on the other side of the rivalry at Mississippi State she's number 28 at the back for the [Music] Bulldogs 11 meetings this year in non-conference play scheduled between the ACC and the SEC this is the fifth one and at the moment the SEC actually has a little lead 21 and one Texas beating SMU the other night 6 to3 helped with that obviously wake with the lead here trying to even that up last year more SEC teams made the NCA tournament than ACC teams only the third time that's happened as chiosi can't quite track that one down well nothing came from it but that was a fantastic first touch from Shoshi as she got forward off that back line the you see the numbers over the years that NCA tournament blip in 2021 when South Carolina upset North Carolina but over the years typically the ACC has had an advantage is the SEC closing it remains to be seen and certainly these two are are prime protagonists this year it's really the biggest test for Mississippi State you see a couple of changes the other ACC teams they've played in the past Miami and Boston College are typically in the bottom half of the standings coaches new coaches on each side hoping to turn that around of course well Jonathan we talked about Nikki small earlier when she came in Off the Bench now with taking Mina out she's in that holding mid position so we mentioned what it's like coming off the bench and having to find your game but now she's in a completely different spot knowing she's more that attacking player and here she is making it her own getting forward she'll try it herself from distance too much over the top but what an active role for their Swiss army knife of the moment nichaela small I love when you have an attacking player and you put them a little bit deeper because they will always find ways to get forward sometimes it's getting forward and laying it off she decided to keep that one herself it's not a bad look on frame Skies it over just a little bit great story came back from ACL injury that had or missed the fall of 2022 and said that injury gave me a whole different perspective and I now play with the mindset every game could be my last game she managed to combine an internship with her play in The W League this summer she was in mechanicburg PA playing for Eagle FC W League team of the month so interesting to see what the players have been up to each summer oh that's flighted in wonderfully and finished perfectly Mississippi State ties it in the closing Seconds of of the first half what a finish up top from Cara Harris The Freshman with her first career goal and it's a big [Applause] [Music] [Applause] one when it's two players coming in off the bench who make the difference for Mississippi State this is a beautiful ball played in right over that back line by Wagner Harris with a nice touch to bring it down from her chest look at how this ball is right into the path in which Harris is running splits the center back in that far player and all she needs is a touch to bring it down and put it away that's a beautiful buildup ball in and finish the pure joy and Elation with that jump with both arms in the air is a picture I hope her family frames and puts on the wall forever that you can never top a moment like that she seemed as surprised as anybody to get her first Collegiate goal here in her third game Wake Forest trying to respond immediately that's left really well by Alex Wood and Anderson has to dive to hold on to it Mississippi State by the way had gone 25 minutes without a shot before that that last [Music] look both sides with a lot of changes [Music] and the depth giving Mississippi State a chance to tie it here W Forest trying to respond and laazer able to tackle that one away from small I mean it feels like a sucker punch Morgan right 25 minutes without a shot and then one ball delicately placed over the back line wake Force trying to respond at the other well and it was the way that they got forward it's really good work from wood to beat her Defender Scythe does not cut in quick enough if she was on that back post she would have been able to get a touch in but just a touch too [Music] [Applause] [Music] late you get the feeling that goal has put some life into Mississippi State here coach had to be warned he was way out of his technical area I mean not close there's Cara Harris who tied it from Round Rock High School in Lone Star SC where James Armstrong used to [Music] coach now one by small to keep possession for Wake Forest chiosi who may be your new favorite player 24 here on the near side moves out from Center back and has had a good game at right [Music] back really well done by ISO to not only intercept that pass but find the teammate at the same time but SAS dispossessed it'll be a wake for his throw and that's good pressure from Dawkins it's in a tight area it doesn't seem like a lot but that's what allowed Wake Forest to win that possession back the puser knocked that one into the middle Harris connecting with Riley Thompson this his [Music] husbands long ball finds Cara Harris on the right some numbers up here for Mississippi State early ball now it comes in Thompson little sloppy right now with each team again going deeper into its bench Sunday game early in the season you're going to see a large part of the roster in the game and again for Mississippi State contributing 109 6 5 4 3 2 1 time runs out on the first half Wake Forest felt in control for much of it but the late goal from Cara Harris turns that narrative on its head and has us all tied up 1-1 through 45 minutes maybe a critical second half in each team's season coming up here in August Mississippi State in Maroon Wake Forest in white both teams return almost everybody from a year ago when Mississippi State went to the round of 16 in the NCA tournament and Wake Forest finished in the top six in the ACC to make the AC CC tournament which is honestly such a big accomplishment year to [Music] year right away is this a shape change Morgan with four at the back for Mississippi State I'm kind of surprised quite frankly to see them go to that four back system we saw a Personnel change later in the first half but I think for them also here in coach AR strong talk about how they gave the ball a little away a little bit too much I think for them it's just playing a little bit more conservative how can they hold on to the ball I do expect to see them shift back into that three back I think as they continue to try to send numbers forward but I am a little bit surprised to start the half to have four in the back yeah it's 42 31 at the moment with price laazer at left back shifting Gutierrez number seven from one of the C Center back spots out to right back and the dangerous ball back here rough Touch by Matty Anderson Under Pressure she was able to get it clear toward the deak town side well and Jonathan also talking about shap by putting four on the back line it actually opens up a lot of space for Hajj and his kto in the middle so I expect to see them get on the ball a little bit more and create for Mississippi State moving forward I love coaches you say James what did you tell the team at the half he doesn't mention anything about the shape change that's coming I didn't expect him to but it's just it's just amusing all ball says the referee Michael lever this is kiero and they connect right up the middle Alli Perry trying to play in itana Martinez Montoya she's numbers down she has help layoff comes to is kiero now Kennedy husbands chases Emily Morris got there first for Wake Forest now Mississippi State played in a fullback plenty last year right they had an international trip to England in the spring and their normal spring schedule they've trained two shapes but this is the first time we've seen a lot of it this fall in a competitive game this their fourth game you just see a little bit of moments of of being unsure of where to go right I mean Gutierrez was kind of looking around like who takes this throw in oh I'm the right back I do we'll see if they can get comfortable and cause Wake Forest some trouble here [Music] Emily Colton three in white marked closely by hodj moved it to K Hanks like ainaa looking over the top Colton had slowed her run had to restart Macy Hodge out to meter slides away and gets it into the corner Macy Hodge will not back down from a challenge and will not miss a chance to slide well look at that smile on her face she loves the fact look at this work that she does on the way back she gets all balls a fantastic Challenge and that's her holding midfielder showing her Pace covering ground getting in for a hard-nosed tackle that's really well done from Hajj and that's how she sets the tone for her team Hajj is incredible she actually quit soccer after her senior year of high school turned her back on Vanderbilt and said I need to focus on my family she stayed at home she helped take care of her sister she worked at Kroger she was just a regular old student at West Georgia for a whole semester and she went and visited her friend Laney Ste who was playing at University of Florida and said oh this is what I'm missing and enrolled at Mississippi state has become a main stay for them and that was a heck of a fast break and Mina gets a yellow card for her role in breaking it up and that's not a bad place to get a foul if your Mina she just goes in for a hard tackle she's beat and then gets a toe in pulls the player down a bit but that worked out very well for Wake Forest because Mississippi state was on the break moving the other way I mean that was like jailbreak that was like 5v3 but Jonathan going back to your just comments about Macy hod there's something really special about a player when the game is taken away from them or if they choose to step away one way or another when if a player chooses to come back or if they work hard to get back from an injury they are different they are a different type of player than they were before for that situation whatever the situation was and I think that's something that looking on paper when you have a player who's been through something very difficult one way or another they just play in a different manner because they also appreciate the game in a different way and know what it's like to not have it Emily Colton went full in on mahaj there and I I almost thought we were going to have some pushing and shoving everyone kept their heads though Mississippi State comes away with the ball oh then again she's become a starter from Mississippi State she says I get goosebumps thinking about where I was hadn't played in a year couldn't pass the fitness test couldn't do this couldn't do that to where I am now oh look at that crunching tackle and Mina is down it was clean anyone on on both teams would tell you that but she did play did result in Mina going down and that will be the end of the Laughing um for everybody so that's real concern for mik a Mina who's just been a Mainstay for Wake Forest the teams will get water on this hot afternoon as Mina gets tended to by the athletic training staff Emily Morris the player staying with her we talked about being without the game and these are the moments that kind of just they scare everybody on on both sides so obvious concern on the Wake Forest side as they await Malika Mina you know we never have any idea about the medical side of it but just you know the way it obviously affected her is kind of the first sign of concern how it upset her and Emily Murphy one of the captains coming to help her up and help her off along with the training [Applause] staff and you hate to see that at any point for any player and especially when you you look at Mina and the impact she has on this weight forest team Tony Tony duoo said she's been the best player on the field in a lot of games and it's tough cuz it's a clean tackle but you have Hajj who's coming in and she has that momentum and it's a crunching tackle she goes in for the ball her quick momentum is bringing her forward and she just gets through the ball and Mina's on the the other end of that unfortunately so nichaela small will re-enter replacing [Music] Mina in obvious agony that of course will be a bigger takeaway than anything else from this game will be her status and her wellbeing really strong touches from small coming in the game and winning a tackle getting her team back in possession of the ball that's a really great [Music] way to step in the game and almost make a statement for your team coming in knowing that yes small can play this holding mid position Mina is that go-to person for them but really well done from small just coming in and making a quick impact so 51st minute 1-1 game and one of the Wake Forest Lynch pins Malika Mina just forced out of the game due to injury Emily Morris trying to play it behind the back line for the Fleet Feet of Hannah Johnson and she is flagged offside Brandon Ingram doing the honors on the far side it'll be a free kick for Mississippi State from here Mississippi state has Tennessee Tech South Alabama at home Louisiana Tech away and abalene Christian at home so it's a bit of an easier road on the Mississippi State Side in terms of getting ready for the SEC schedule which will start for them on September 19th they of course get at Oklahoma and home against Texas their first two games so they are the welcoming committee to the SEC and we told you on the other side about what Wake Forest has coming up a lot of road games five Road games out of the non-conference schedule for Tony to lose Hodes pass deflected away Martinez Montoya and Morris fist full of Jersey no foul play on and wake for his [Music] [Music] Tazz dummy by Colton but it didn't work out as the recipient of the pass wasn't in the right spot 53rd [Music] minute right comes with it at the back for Mississippi [Music] State but isn't that angle strange for Gutierrez as a right back there and she was very flat to Combs and again I just don't feel they're as comfortable in this this setup at the moment I definitely would agree that they're still working through it but quite frankly right now it doesn't seem to matter because I don't think wake has threatened enough and it it really feels like the start of the second half and especially the injury to Mina has kind of taken some of the air out of the sails for Wake Forest this game just feels a little bit slower there was one ball the last one played into Johnson was almost dictated by the ball not the run that I think we need to see wake just take control of their decision making and just kind of regroup a bit so connect some passes move that ball side to side can they maybe find the feet of Johnson gutier claiming it was a foul cuz Emily Murphy gave her a good elbow in the back but it was it was just a throw in Emily Murphy having a lot to say at the moment as well kenned the husbands harassed in the corner [Music] small and foul is the decision the flag is up it was either going to be a hand ball or a foul cuz husbands grabbed the ball and foul is the [Music] decision a lot of uh discussion on the between the teams between the teams and the referees well also when the game slows down a little bit it's a bit easier to talk because the pace isn't as quick so some of your time does go to chirping a little bit more not that I'm speaking from personal experience may just a little would never CH maybe just a little bit Alli Perry's delivery comes thought she was steamrolled in the penalty area small with a neat touch Murphy trying to unlock Colton up the middle they've got numbers on that side mataran had to get there and she did enough to force it out corner kick coming but that could have been so much worse for Mississippi [Applause] State if Johnson gets to the ball there they are in on goal or if that ball was played in for Emily Colton it was kind of played on the other side of her but if that was played more centrally from Murphy Colton would have been in behind but it worked out well cuz she had that second runner in Johnson really good defensive work on the way back but still another opportunity for Wake Force we know they're better chances from Corners came early in the first half when they had Johnson she's marked tight but there is a bit of a height disadvantage for Mississippi State sixth Wake Forest Corner Emily Morris delivery Johnson was the Target and and was glued to her line that time she was not coming out for [Applause] it this is Emily Murphy loves these 1 V [Music] ones Ken the husband stayed right with her kiero was caught of two minds it was in between Perry and husbands turned over to wake small great body position to win the second ball and win the free kick as well they'll applaud for that here at Spry [Music] Stadium Martinez Montoya started her career at fdu [Music] in the states at least came from Spain she thought she was fouled there but chavoshi just came away with it for Wake Forest and the deakes have [Music] it 12 minutes into this second half no shots in the period for either team shots were 115 wake at the half they're 115 wake at the moment and that is kind of what this start to the second half has felt like no rhythm I was going to say that track it definitely feels like it's been a bit disjointed I think for both teams I mean wake kind of has this new weapon in their Arsenal though with Hannah Johnson just long ball up top whether it's in behind or or for hold up you talked about them being more direct maybe that's not always the ACC way but it can work Ka Hanks busting inline playing it across Falls right to Murphy and she M hit it it rolls right to Anderson Emily Murphy dreams about those and didn't connect cleanly one unfortunately she might be dreaming about it in the wrong way cuz this is one that falls right to her feet once again a tank she's special out wide This falls right to the foot of Murphy yes it has a little bounce she gets on top of it but just doesn't strike it cleanly Mississippi State very fortunate there because it was a poor clearance Emily Morris kept that in got it to Hanks Gutierrez stood her up poked it away and Mississippi state has it back [Music] Morris back heel but not to anyone on her team oh The Tackle how P Nicki small getting into that one wake going early again and it's not over the top broken up by [Applause] [Music] Combs Mississippi State Front Runners are calling for this long ball over the top to beat three Defenders that is not the simplest ball to play Emily Colton up the middle trying to squeeze it through for Johnson and laazer able to cover that for Mississippi state that touch from Emily Colton might not be looked at again cuz it's such a small thing but the way that that ball comes in she opens her body up it's right in front of her she doesn't have to think twice about where that Ball's going it is in her path those are little things that as a young player you have to juggle you need to practice these things that's why because in the game that touch just becomes second nature Ali Perry on the Run wait it too long before trying to slide it out and Shoshi broke that up yeah must say she didn't have to think about it for a second that's just Instinct by this point they got the timing right it was an onside run but enough bodies there for Mississippi State to deny Colton a clean look Emily Colton committed to North Carolina as a freshman in high school that's when you know you are blue chip recruit her sister Abby didn't pick a college until her senior year went to Wake Forest they wanted to be nearby even if not teammates and now after couple of years at North Carolina they get to be teammates again Emily Colton number three saying I don't have words to explain what it feels like to play with my sister again Abby wears 33 my favorite though is the shade though Abby as a freshman her her Wake Forest bio right there twins her Wake Forest bio just said Has a younger sister Emily we're not going to say that we're twins I'm older by I'm older by 5 minutes that that makes me the older sister wait did we check now does it say twin sister plays for awake did we change it now that they're on the same team or no you're exposing that I don't remember the answer to that sorry not intentional I I think she probably kept it I'm sure they yeah it's worth to go back and change that you [Applause] know the parents actually relocated to the the Research Triangle so I don't I don't know if they've kept that place and are still making the drive down I40 for for all the weight games or what free kick for Mississippi State again set pieces for each team have been dangerous in this one Michael L the referee as the clock runs is going to talk to the players at the top of the 18 Emily Murphy first header still pressure on the second ball of course Macy hod is there and it's a goal kick for Wake Forest we can just have Emily Murphy and Macy Hodge Square Off 1 V one I would I would watch that I was going to say I'm really watching this chatter and that is where the competitiveness of some of these players completely stands out cuz it's just a small little thing there's an extra bump here the ball goes out I'm going to hold the ball a little bit longer in my hand so you can't play it yet gives us a chance to tell you about our first ACC Network women's volleyball match coming up Tuesday September 3rd when SMU hosts number two Nebraska Moody magic night at Moody Coliseum at SMU crowd should be serious for that one coverage begins Tuesday September 3rd 8 Eastern 7 Central Wake Forest and Mississippi State tied 1-1 here and we've seen more direct play I think again than maybe we expected and the expectation was oh that favors the team to be determined whether that will be enough for either team to come out with a win here no nobody's too interested in a draw no a draw would not suit either party and wait Forest is clear they need a win and I what I want to see them is can they bring this ball to the left side can you get Hanks on the ball again cuz she has proven she can go at Gutierrez and get around her the one time she tried to cut centrally Gutierrez was able to step in and win that so if I'm Hanks get that ball go on your left foot beat the player and then bring the ball across cuz you know you have Abby Colton in the middle excuse me Emily Colton in the middle Abby probably On The Backs side and then you have Hannah Johnson who's that Target if I'm wake force and I want to play direct it's got to go up the left side because then also if you want to switch it up then you can pop it to the right and you get Murphy with that ball at her foot if you're looking for where that would be Ka Hanks is out of your picture but she's on the near side for us the left Winger for Wake Forest number [Music] nine right now it's the right back chosi to throw see how hjj went forward for that one immediately as kardo covered her spot on the field Gutierrez looking for Maggie Wadsworth just back into the game for the first time since the 18th minute number 21 couldn't hold it there [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] choshi with the hard step and does commit the foul free kick Mississippi [Music] State Ruth NE tant left back or left Center back for Mississippi State got a little International flavor right we told you was kto from Columbia Mata from [Music] Haiti Martinez Montoya from Spain Alli Perry will try that from distance Too Many Bodies in the way bodies flying [Music] [Music] Mississippi State wanted the foul calling that instead it'll be a Wake Forest throwing in they thought laazer had position and Johnson clipped her as she came by and so Hannah Johnson of Wake Forest number 20 Target for will come out Sierra Scythe will come in she goes out wide on the left again Morgan's going to like that matchup if your Wake Forest Scythe against Alexis Gutierrez and it'll move K Hanks up top well I'm also interested to see the pace of Hanks cuz she's been able to get by on the flank but we've seen all game Riley hmes has done a very nice job matching up against Johnson so I'm curious the movement we see from Hanks to get herself free and knowing we've seen wake play a little bit more direct can they maybe find Hanks in behind yeah I was wondering why doesn't Emily Murphy go up top right we've seen her more centrally than Hanks and I think that speed might be the answer yeah I was expecting to see that that change as well and see Murphy slide into the middle but that's my first thought especially knowing with the ball in transition Hanks is still the lone forward Alli Perry can pick a pass she started that one but second ball not connected Mississippi state gets it back first time look and Payton Cahill glue on those fingertips pulling it in it's a fantastic save from kahill one of the first times she's really been challenged but given away and Emily Morris commits the foul free kick in a dangerous spot for Mississippi [Music] State and that's a place after a great save you have to be able to maintain possession Mississippi State just picking that ball up off wake missc truly it's really well done from kahill but then the ball is just given away this ball is played in a complete 5050 position at that point Morris has to bring the player down she wasn't even looking I mean that's that's the biggest part of it but this is a set piece in an incredibly dangerous position I'm expecting a shot here if you have Runners it's got to be Al Perry right number five with her hand up she's shooting this kahill fumbles it and it's scrambled Away by Wake Forest out for a corner oh that was close the way that this ball is played in it's very difficult for kahill to get it clean cuz she's dropping down just completely coughs it up and it's actually Riley comes the center back who gets forward and tries to knock that one home and it gets she didn't just miss it that was saved by kill getting up off the ground that was actually an incredible [Applause] stop and what's good there from kahill as well is cuz the way that this ball was played from Perry it forces kahill off her line she does a good job getting her first step and getting there but it's not clean the way she holds on to it is sight surrounded by three and it's taken away by Olivia buckston number [Music] 10 SC does well to win it back that pressure though for Mississippi State Wadsworth on it we'll wait for the [Music] Cavalry little towoke into the dangerous position there but Wake Forest had numbers around on the ball oh that's sloppy at the back little miscommunication players not sure if the pass was intended for them Mississippi state is on the front foot right [Applause] now leaza early looking for Wadsworth offside flag stayed down but no Runner off of that and a blind pass and it's scooped up by K the past couple minutes have felt a bit chaotic but what that stems from is really poor decisions from Wake Forest in their defensive third they've cough the ball up or they they've turned and been in pressure and tried to play out and basically played it directly to a Mississippi State player but those giveaways are happening in their defensive thirds when Mississippi State picks that ball up they're so close to goal in their attacking third that it's making them look more dangerous than they've been it's not happening in the buildup it's not happening in the run a play it's from a quick transition from a bad turnover from the deakes [Music] only one shot this half for Wake Forest we're 25 minutes in well what I'm curious about too Nikki small has done a fantastic job coming in playing that holding mid I'm curious what this would be like if Mina was in the game would she maybe show differently and would she be an option for the outside backs in a different manner I still think small is doing a great job but is it maybe a difference of personnel that the outside backs just can't find small this is nichaela small trying to slot it through offside flag went up against chosi it'll be a free kick or make you pardon against Hanks running outside in and it'll be a free kick for Mississippi State 71st minute 1-1 game M Forest scored a minute 58 into the game took advantage of a corner kick that wasn't punched convincingly clear Mississippi state scored shortly before [Music] halftime and there have not there had not been a lot of clear-cut scoring opportunities in this second half until that Mississippi State free kick yielded two [Applause] that's a rat under pressure just has to give it away so a little bit of Wake Forest turning the screws in the other direction and we'll get the cooling break here for the second half each team will hydrate 1-1 the score final 20 minutes coming up in Winston Salem who's going to win it come back with us times may change but some things remain Timeless I've been using the do Beauty Bar more than available on the ESPN app you can watch it anywhere we welcome you wherever you're watching this one I'm Jonathan Yardley she's Morgan Bowen former Virginia Tech stand out watching Wake Forest and Mississippi State square off again important non-conference game the most important until conference play starts in late September Wake Forest scored early Mississippi State tied it shortly before the half and the second half Morgan you and I both feel has been disjointed and lacking rhythm in a variety of ways why is that and who does it favor I think there's a couple factors at play I think when you look at Forest Mina is out of the game I think for both sides it's a Sunday game they played players had a fair amount of minutes on their Thursday night game but I also think when you look at both sides this is an we've talked about how it's an important matchup but it also comes down to who's going to show that they can dig deeper and still get the result I'm a little perplexed as to that yellow card it's been awarded she heads the ball she run she she runs through a player to do it so you be the judge well and Colton definitely gets the the rough end of that tackle do I think that's yellow card worthy I would say no could I see it being foul yes right right that's Mississippi state's Hannah Johnson we told you there's one on each team Hannah Johnson of Wake Forest out of the game at the moment but we will see her we are confident in the remaining minutes neat footwork by Emily Morris small playing it through for Emily Colton went near post and eventually into the side netting it'll be a goal kick for Matty Anderson and Mississippi State well Jonathan out of that hydration break you saw Wake Forest players getting forward in a different manner we've seen Emily Morris getting into the attack but she had a an advaned and she's also tucked in a little bit more Central so it actually looks like we've seen wake shift to a three back with Shi on the right looks like ANS brow in the middle and then bringing in Johnson Johnson on the left yeah they just made that change bringing Christine Johnson in place of Dempsey Brown so that's interesting right this be the first time we've seen any kind of look this way from Wake this year Zoe main got past Johnson was she fouled no and ansbrow brings it backward to the goalkeeper K well and I'm not surprised to see Wake Forest shift I think it's a little early to see them go to a three back but they know they need a result so this is a good test for them how can they adjust in game granted you get a little bit of a timeout situation with the hydration break but how can they adjust to try to to get the result that they need Hanks with space in the penalty area Cuts one Defender shots deflected Anderson Knocks it around the Post Corner Kick coming as Wake Forest turns up the [Applause] [Applause] pressure Ka Hanks has been working this game she actually gets up on the middle brings it on her right foot it's a beautiful cut into her left a bit of a deflection they need to keep feeding her cuz she can either go to goal herself or sprayed off and look to connect I think that save was underrated given the deflection really took Anderson having to get to a different spot it was awkward the way that that ball came in seventh corner for Wake Forest choshi wide open at the D they want to do something different otherwise the six-yard box is loaded [Music] up it is chavoshi and her first touch took her the wrong way I don't know if that one's going to stay in the [Music] Playbook goerz wins the ball for Mississippi state does not have numbers in attack wodsworth sloppy with the ball there showed too much of it to Nicha small and wake has it again you can see all of a sudden we're now playing on this side of the field we're playing at the North End [Music] Macy Hodge won it back for Mississippi State you see as soon as they win the ball their backline doesn't move up because they sense it's coming right back at them or because it's Sunday and it's hot well the last three or so minutes since that hydration break we're almost seeing glimpses of a an energized Wake Forest team that is sending numbers forward but also doing it with purpose not just sending numbers maybe playing Direct they're playing a little bit more tactical and trying to combine also we see Emily Murphy now as that lone forward so shifting Hanks back out wide I think provides that different look so they can look to play direct through her or she can connect with the ball at her foot and then bring it central to Murphy so we've been waiting to see that shift oh neat work over [Music] there kill first one to the cross for Wake Forest [Music] really good control by Olivia buckton from Mississippi State just juggled it over a Defender I know it's just day at the park for you but we at wake has shifted to three at the back since the 72nd minute so just a few minutes ago trying to push numbers forward take the game to Mississippi State and win this game and not be left with a frustrating home tie that ultimately hurt their NCAA chances a year ago well what I also like about this shift to the three back is that by bringing Emily Morris up she's sitting with Abby Colton so that allows nichaela small to be in a more advanced position as well so behind your front line you have Nikki small and Emily Colton who can kind of create Havoc right in front of that back line and that's also forcing for Mississippi State is KIRO and Macy Hodge to be very aware of them on the defensive side so it's pulling your two main players back a little bit deeper cuz you have those game changers for Wake Forest playing in that more attacking Midfield role oh you're adopting our game changers yes from one from one team to the other I like [Music] it Collision goes Mississippi state's WI [Music] [Music] he Touch by Hajj away from pressure maturan Lofts it long [Music] Miss hit from Christine Johnson it'll be a Mississippi State throw of course the ACC football season continues Thursday night we'll have you covered in Raleigh number 24 NC State hosting Western Carolina the ACC huddle pregame show starts at 6 Eastern and then when the game's over the crew will be right back with a complete breakdown Friday right back at it in Atlanta pregame for Elon and Duke that coverage begins at 7 Eastern nobody covers the ACC like we do that is true no matter what sport you see Riley Thompson in for Mississippi State with Wake Forest flying the ACC flag this afternoon price laazer with a step to the ball but took her player out it'll be a free kick for Wake Forest 17 teams in the ACCC for women's soccer this year six will make the League's postseason tournament Wake Forest has been one of those six two of the last three years which given the competition is very hard to do Duke and Virginia both looking for Big Bounce backs this year oh that's awkward and monan sends it out for a corner and this is one of the spots from which Wake Forest has been most dangerous today we've seen a lot more Touches for mat in this second half and overall she's done a really nice job even with some high pressure on her but that's a a giveaway that she's going to want back because you get Wake Forest in a really dangerous area lot of bodies around the goalkeeper Anders she comes for it got a fist and is back on her feet small Anderson spills that and has time to get on the rebound because comes and Gutierrez were boxing out and Gutierrez and Murphy clapping in each other's face right there fun little fun little subplot well Nikki small does a nice job just getting this ball onto her right foot but nobody's there you see Murphy standing flat footed she's not ready for that rebound that comes from Anderson right [Applause] well there are a couple different reasons for which that free kick could have been called Wake Forest with the ball is the outcome in any of them Christine Johnson went short Sierra sc's pass was read by hodj and just cleared out for a throw [Applause] and one of the rule shifts this year is in the last 15 minutes of a tied game the clock will stop on any substitution from either team so it used to be the last five minutes of the team that was winning made a sub now it's the last 15 minutes of the winning team in a game with an advantage and of either team in a [Music] tie Thompson gets to that one rolls it centrally for is kiero tried to cut back on Emily Morris she was not fooled into space for K Hanks they don't have numbers but they do have Kaaya she puts her head down mataran slides it out of bounds corner kick the [Applause] [Music] decision jacus she tests Jonathan I've said her name a lot but haven't verbally said how strong she's been today but Emily Morris who stepped into more of that holding Midfield R is the one who picks that up and this ball that she texture she the texture that she put on it the way that it laid in it's Hanks I agree I don't think that's a call but that ball in behind was dangerous she had her player beat but it's a nice little touch for mat ninth corner kick sent it to a deeper spot and ansbrow couldn't do much with it Wake Forest with the second attacking phase small will try her luck and it didn't really challenge Anderson in the end may have taken a deflection on the way through [Applause] [Applause] look at the Gap right now for Mississippi State Morgan it's huge back to front they're definitely stretched out when it comes to the shape and that's what's provided a lot of space that Hajj and his Koo have to cover in the middle Emily Murphy is in Riley KES closes her down free kick going out and Emily Murphy doesn't want to give the ball to mattye Anderson and she wants a word with the referee as well coms still still down for Mississippi State clock will stop here 84th minute as Riley com slow to get up she wears that neck device to to prevent future concussions she's had a couple in her pass well Riley comes has been absolutely fantastic for Mississippi State she cuts off this angle from Murphy to where Murphy then has to drift away from go and she can't get anything clean on it cuz that ball that was sent in is in the perfect spot but defensively coms could not have played that any [Music] better Murphy skyed highest to win the ball then hodj took her down and yep that'll be the yellow card for Macy Hodge I think everybody on both sides is ready for [Music] that and Murphy has that ball in her foot definitely a card this game's starting to get a little bit chippy cuz you can tell both teams are wunning this result and it's coming down to the end maybe not as clean as they would both hope I think Hajj also did that not just to get in on the tackle but to try and make a statement as well to slow this down from Mississippi State oh there just been a physical challenge right with a player kind of bouncing off Murphy on the ball in the air and that heightened everybody's intensity so free kick here now remember Morris has been doing all of her service left footed so even though she's standing to the right side of this ball we saw her run across it once and then step back and deliver left footed and that's the play again and it's dangerous again [Music] [Applause] Hanks on the dribble now shots deflected Up and Away by his Garo corner kick [Applause] coming and Hanks is moving her hands trying to keep this going looking for a bit of a quicker kick for Morris clock stopped on the sub and so now wake wants to keep things going you can sub every time to keep the clock stopping it's almost the reverse of what the was supposed to do here's how we got here second minute Wake Forest took the lead and just a nice finish on the back end from Abby Colton that ball Finds Its way all the way to the end she's not even marked but then a really nice finish from Mississippi State in the buildup it's Wagner who plays the ball over the top all the way to Cara Harris who brings it down pops it home first career goal for each one as Wake Forest continues to attack late here trying to get a non-conference winner they so badly need small drives it and finds the corner wake for his big goal this year Nikki small comes up with it by [Applause] number we got to win these Tony Delo said Nikki small came through in the big moment small has been open at the top of the box the last three Corner kicks this one falls down and she puts it away in the right place it's the early run to draw Defenders out look at the strike from small the way that ball spins Anderson tries cannot get a foot on it a beautiful finish from small she wanted that one and placed that one home instantly Wake Forest went to four at the back Dempsey Brown is back in the game at Center back the shape is totally different and wake is going to try and see out the big non-conference win they felt they so badly needed and they had been knocking on the door those Corners just they couldn't get it down and they bring in Johnson and she draws so much attention so when you have Hanks running towards the ball they're trying to also shift Defenders that way and it opens up small even more because nobody's going to go to the top of the box they should but they're so worried about those other players but what what's even better is she made the most of the moment that ball had fallen to her foot a couple times she wasn't able to connect very well didn't have the power behind it but she definitely made up for those other chances at that last one long diagonal Ali Perry there she's offside the flag is up her shot won't count even as she hits the bar free kick to Wake Forest with the clock [Music] running and I like this ball all way across but Perry definitely drifts too far forward it's actually two players if she can take her first two steps wide to the sideline before she goes forward it'll buy her some time and allow her to stay on side I hadn't really thought about this Morgan now if you're losing don't you sub at every single opportunity to stop the clock like every time now these two have been going at it all game Gutierrez and Murphy after the last challenge where Murphy was like a brick wall and gooder fell off her goodier went to the official and said hey she's using her forearm on me so there was there's a lot of history within this game between those two and for Wake Forest hey the clock's running we don't care I was going to say there's been chatter between the two of them but it honestly works out really well for Murphy right now cuz it keeps the clock going no foul called on this one as Riley comes comes away with it she's a little more [Music] [Applause] subtle this this could be keep away for a little while [Music] I know people are again going to say yall are talking about this game in August like it's such a big deal I mean this is a difference in 10 15 spots in the RPI if you hold this win for Wake this this is no joke it's a big win if they can hold it for RPI but it's also a really big confidence booster for them especially as they get closer to conference play because we talked about it they had some good draws in conference play but they also had some really bad draws that's what set them apart as well so this can show them when they play a good opponent they can they can fight maybe it's not the prettiest game the whole entire time but they can squeak out a result because that's also what'll make the biggest difference both goals coming from corner kicks set pieces was definitely on their list of things to improve Macy hodj into the tackle wins the ball for Mississippi State throw in will stop no it doesn't stop the clock now that you're losing that's that's the difference when I think Wake Forest will take away there's still some work to do when it comes to set pieces and Corner kicks you can see they're trying some tricky things they do need to tighten that up a bit but what they've shown is they can be dangerous and they can put pressure and it'll force a second or third ball and Nikki small is proving that they can put it away as well so there's still work to do but definitely a good momentum builder for sure they also like you get a a chance to use your we're losing formation right generate more offense out of it and have it be successful everyone's going to feel better about that the next time you need to go to yeah that's a really good point and also doing so with different players and holding mid cuz you would have expected no matter what formation we would see from Wake Forest they holding midfielder would have been mikina so with her out right now it's also showing they can put some other people in there maybe have two in a low block and that they can still compete and potentially get a result so they stopped the clock there because Martinez Montoya was down but no trainer so she's up ready to continue that saved 10 or 15 seconds for Mississippi State here 91 seconds to go separating Wake Forest from its biggest win of the young season [Applause] [Music] [Music] off the punt ball given away Hodge trying to slot it through wodsworth might have fouled ansbrow great work there by Hannah Johnson back in her own defensive third to keep that ball [Music] moving and now wake will just dump it in and Chase to use a hockey term under 50 seconds to [Music] [Applause] go Martinez Montoya chasing the second ball Hanks just lifts it clear up into the [Applause] [Music] trees final charart for Mississippi State chest it down but right to Hannah Johnson of Wake Forest the wrong Hannah Johnson as far as Mississippi state is concerned time runs out on a Wake Forest win one they so badly wanted in nonconference Play 2 to one the final over number 20 Mississippi State this afternoon big big win for the deeps [Music]
