tactician has been a former under 15 US national team coach as well and huge shoes to fill but it really has seemed to be a seamless transition Casey uh to Damon nahas well as you mentioned huge shoes to Phill but he's been part of this program for many years and so he's had a great impact over the last s Seasons North Carolina on the attack here early Arizona comes in after a one with victory over Grand Canyon they then knocked off Pacific 5-n and are coming off a 5-n victory over Northern Arizona under that woman Becca moros in her fourth season former professional soccer player was named coach in 2021 former Duke Blue Devil driven in towards the near post and punched away still in play there it's a first tester here back in it comes again and finally coralled here by Olivia Ry the Junior from Frisco Texas but North Carolina here uh showing a different type of pressure that maybe Arizona has seen this year so far and I like that from the tar Hills trying to whip that in early and test Ry she's on the road and this is a tough matchup for them early on in the season so you want to try to test the keeper early but she was up to it and Becca Morris told us uh in our meeting that they are going to try to play out of the back and play through the pressure of North Carolina but things could change very quickly if they're not successful doing that well a lot of her philosophy is making sure that her team plays tactically sound that they're good on the ball they can execute technically so you don't necessarily want to change that completely it's just where do you do it but you want to keep your principles the same and that's something she was really adamant about that they're either going to be able to do that against North Carolina or they not it doesn't change in a couple days so this will be a good test for them it's Arizona in possession [Music] here more of a direct ball here down this far sideline a good sliding tackle there to prevent the delivery from Olivia migle aisle of Palms South Carolina getting a started in the right back position this is Claire gagy he's got a shut out on the air transfer from Brown a graduate student that brown conceded less than a goal a game one goes towards the near poost there's a second ball there and a shooting opportunity shot is blocked after the hit there from Sammy Bosh and cleared by UNC so a positive moment there for ER to build off of and they really are trading opportunities if not for Bella simber there was going to be a second chance on frame but you can see both of these teams are not going to sit back they both want to possess they both want to be dangerous in possession so I think we're going to be treated to some in to-end action here this afternoon Olivia thas knocks it inside she's continued her run forward on the left she's going to get it back here streaking into the box at the far post and that's her favorite place is Kate FY who's got three goals on the year all at that back post it is a place she loves to get and North Carolina nearly gets on the board here and that's great from allmark finding Thomas in this wide channel it's an awesome ball behind because the Defenders can't do anything about it FY is not able to direct that on frame but you're right she just scored a goal against Georgia in a similar fashion it just wasn't as close inside the six-yard box but good from the tar Hills early on only had one goal last year she's already got three on the year here and two of them came dramatically late against Colorado in the Buffs to get a 3 to2 Victory when the torers will down two to one on the road but all three of her goals have come at that back post somebody's told her Casey to get to that back post cuz good things can happen definitely and when we talked to Damon he said he has said that but also Anon continues to say that and so um there's a lasting impact there as well on Kate FY she's obviously taking that to heart and definitely something that Arizona is going to have to watch out for there's a high press and then it's knocked away here by the Wildcats 22 returning players for them and their 31st season of play and they've come out here confidently against the North Carolina Tar [Music] Heels I think what we're going to see throughout this game is is these different spells of possession where each team's going to try to go forward and both teams like to send their out side backs forward as well so that's a space that we saw Thomas get into for the tar Hills but it's definitely something that Arizona can try to look and take advantage of as well as Miggy forward and here's one just turning the North Carolina defense recent forward here is [Music] Arizona they've got a striker on display and Nicole D with five just really calm there in Midfield come the tar Hills it's FY and she's going to earn the corner here so already you're getting some good wide play and some good penetration and aggression out wide for the Tar Heels and that was definitely one of the things that from their previous games they've had a lot of possession but how dangerous can they be in Breaking lines I think we're already seeing in these first minutes that the North Carolina Tower Hills are playing a little bit more forward out of that possession Tesa Del Rose to take the corner left foot to the back post it's a good looking ball there and trying to get on the end of it his Armstrong but what a pillar she is at the back tough tackler mature Beyond her years now she's only a freshman has played for the under 17 US national team from Frisco [Music] Texas here's Ry [Applause] [Music] Carolina is dangerous because boy they can in three four passes they can be in the final third of an opponent and they've had a lot of really good interchange this year in their possession under Damon nahas and um just continuing to break lines and everything is so dangerous but we also see the pressure that they're able to apply and that turns into the attack but a team led by becam moros is going to do this they're going to try to play out of it play out of that pressure test themselves cuz they're a very technically sound team overall love the confidence that have to do this definitely not easy many a coach would have just dropped into a low block here and played a transition game and refreshing to see cross driven in towards the near post and a good take there from Olivia Ry late in 2022 at Oklahoma had four shutouts there they s her for her excellent [Music] feat and has yet to concede a goal this year more from North Carolina so the roast pushed it out wide another very talented player there Linda Omar she had two assists against Georgia was a 4 to3 Tar Hill win but boy that's Entertainment seven goal Thriller yeah everyone got their money's worth on that one and you mentioned Mark getting an assist she plays in an attacking midr but she can also play in the Winger position as well in the wide all 11 players behind the ball when you have this patience in the attack the guy a left footed hit took a deflection trying to work to get a shot off and create her own chance with Olivia [Music] thomaso plays It Wide patience here Armstrong tried the long diagonal that gets cut out just just a gorgeous setting for college soccer all over the country today A volume of games everywhere 79° just feels gorgeous uh Casey like I've told you many times before college soccer didn't look like this when I played it didn't look like this when I played it's even here in Chapel Hill I mean I loved Fetzer field I was totally fine with the Carolina blue track but um it's hard to argue with what it looks like now isn't it Glen yeah no question about it Casey winning a national title in 20 3 and representing the United States internationally Thomas sophisticated Striker here trying to get turned whips it into the back post there it was almost a blind ball what an idea that was Arizona now will try to break out and what I love about that attack is that's Emerson Elgen coming inside as an outside back playing in the central Channel and that's just so hard to read when you have those outside backs coming inside a bit more but Arizona has done dealt well with it these first 12 minutes and just looked to kind of play into the game a little bit more against the pressure of the tar Hills early ball here and that one's going to get caressed back to the goalkeeper Clare gagy numbers on gagy a little bit of a higher press from [Music] Arizona and it might be transition time here make it one they'll get it wide here it's FY who's been dangerous so far good work defensively to come back from the Arizona wild cats and there's really good compactness of the backline of Arizona there's always cover because you can see simber taking on Olivia Tom is taking on but the center backs Maya Brown and hayami from Arizona doing really well to stay there and make sure that there's not an open opportunity for a shot on frame so back Ry the importance of leadership on a day like today at North Carolina from the likes of D shelf and Christensen really incredibly important because there's different periods of the game especially going on the road against a team like the tar Hills you really got to manage these first 15 or 20 minutes just to make sure that you're able to stay settled in because a team that's organized a team that's comfortable on the ball like the Arizona Wildcats are they can build into a game so you don't want to make any simple mistakes early so that veteran leadership really important from those three Becca Morrow says noted that uh she has been very happy with the improved sort of shape of their Midfield as they've Advanced from game 1 to three they try to build out of the back now and good pressure there from North Carolina is going to concede a throw in here and they definitely have some sophisticated rotations that becam moros has put into play Megan shelf plays a little bit more of that holding role but Christian and beos move around quite a bit create new pockets of space to play in so that match up in Midfield between the three of UNC and those three will be really interesting as the game goes on and how they manipulate each other when they have [Music] possession this is Armstrong gtino migle he played It Wide this is FY a bit of a stop and go has drawn a second Defender and it's going to be a corner here again as she continues to do good work Ahern back there defending for Arizona well there's a lot of pace on that side between migle and FY so a hearn's having to do a lot of tracking back making sure it stays a two against two so they don't they aren't able to go into that space I mean they do still give up corner kick but the defensive responsibility was still there burn is a junior from chensford Massachusetts Del Ros off the corner again she's got the job of getting some good delivery here box is really loaded up here the header goes over the top it was armr coming up from her Center back position getting up in the air there it's so great what we're seeing from the tar Hills there's a near post ball there's a far post ball and this one's right in the heart of everything Armstrong just doesn't time it well but I love the trajectory on that ball there's a lot of pace just have to get up and over it but you can see from The Freshman what she can potentially do in the Box still shaking my head that she's a freshman with the level of maturity and composure she plays with it's hard to believe and there's a really really young team in this UNCC Tar Hill team and just getting a lot of playing time early meshing getting off to a 3 and0 start has to help as well because you want that short-term success to help as you build in the long term with the new players BOS flared it out wide this is kembo he shown a turn of speed it's going to be a throw in Arizona here a good chance to just kind of take stock in where they're at right now but it's been a good start for them I would say I would agree with that and I think there's different spells of POS posession I think for both of these teams you can't lose track of anyone when you have a lot of possession you still have to make sure you're organized so nothing comes when you do have to go back and defend or there's a Counterattack CH trying to play a penetrating ball there is big piece of this team all 19 matches last year and that holding role and balancing role for Arizona hayami comes out with it [Music] chelf and a good win back here from North Carolina this is Olivia Thomas and off her line there is Ry Thomas showing that she can come back into Midfield turn playmaker and almost put in Linda allmark well we know that she can penetrate penetrate behind the back line but playing off the shoulders of the center Back Being able to get on the half turn and play that's a different part of Olivia Thomas' game as she shows in that moment here's Thomas again she W it back takes a shot there and in the end it's going to be an easy save there for the goalkeeper Olivia Ry number 22 recruit in the 2023 class so more uh stifling pressing play there the hard work there from olark lived in Japan speaks Japanese big game against Georgia just so many weapons for North Carolina they can come from a variety of places the goals well that's what Damon nahas talked about he knew that his team needed to continue to be patient in possession and I think we're seeing that it's not always going to come all at once but you got to continue to work in the Box it comes left foot and shot is p wide and out for the goal Ki Nas also said that 90% of the focus now he's on us it's not really as much on the opponent uh he's loved the youthful energy of this team the fact that they become problem solvers and the commitment they have shown uh each and every day in this new season with you know big issue hanging around this team with Anson dorance retiring and the emotional aspect of that you're right it's emotional I think you hit it right on the head because he's sat there for so long and he has such a great impact on players and on staff but you also only have one returning starter in Emerson Elgen so there's a big piece of this where they really have to make sure that they hone in on their own principles and not get caught up in the opponent too much here's kmo now Square it back and the target was the trailing run there of Sammy [Applause] Bosh and Carolina comes back aggressively and wins it here is Olivia Thomas will she go herself here Thomas now gets it on her right foot bit of a stop and go five Defenders back now for Arizona sber now gets it wide back to sber they work a give and go chance here and a huge save off her line comes Olivia Ry to keep this game at nil nil huge from Remy there well I thought the opportunity kind of went away this is how they get the transition attack it's Bella simber coming back dispossesses shelf it comes out here look at the combination play between olar and simber and what a big time save from Ry I thought that elar was in on this one was trying to bend it to the back post but the goalkeeper just makes herself big and concedes the corner incredible look from behind her there just to get out and essentially make that shot hit her off the corner now delar Rose for North Carolina he'll drive it towards the near post and not able to help put on there and there is some variety in the way that they're taking these Corner kicks and so Arizona can't really settle in FY doesn't get a good touch on that one but you know Glenn looking at that last attack from North Carolina I thought Arizona dealt with it really well Olivia Thomas looked like she could take on in the 1V one but still UNCC figures out how to get that opportunity from the left side here's a change for North Carolina Caitlyn Mara in for bellino play out wide here save so Olivia Ry right now has produced two Stellar saves here in the last couple of minutes a to keep this level well right now olar's coming inside inverting herself a little bit in the space in front of the back line it's a great shot she keeps it low and that's twice that she's denied Linda olar but the attacking player doing really well to find space But even better is this save and I think we not only see her play with her feet but two great saves from Olivia Ry Casey that ball had some movement in it too it did seemed to be flaring away at the last minute off the corner delar R it was kind of a question mark how do you feel it's gone so far well I think so far so good for Arizona you're keeping the tar Hills off the board you can build into the game what I think they're doing that's really nice defensively is it's really tight between the lines both horizontally and vertically so it makes it hard for North Carolina but that being said the tar Hills did create a couple chances and Ry has come up big so they'll certainly want to deal with that space right in front of the back line that all Mark is getting into and that last hit from allmark how quickly she prepared it and hit it there she is very very talented attacking player and she had the ton of Versatility Glen playing out wide coming inside that makes it really hard to defend for a player and I think she's been great so far in this first you know 25 minutes or so but I like seeing the guy come up and take a shot she has a little bit of a deeper position the more that the tar Hills can do that it's a little bit more unpredictable and you'll start to see some more openings from other players on frame movement Mobility obviously that was a part of UNC when you were there as well right absolutely was I think this High pressing game is something that North Carolina is known for the mobility of movement I was an attacking player who also played on the wing as well so maybe that's why I like what I'm seeing out atart cuz she's got a lot of different spaces that she can take advantage of that wide that's sidef footed away there by Arizona do like the approach that Becca moros has come in here she's coming here sticking to a lot of their core principles so far against one of the best teams in the country 100% she's a competitor and she is a a coach and was a player that just loves the game of soccer and you can see it in the way her team plays they're very structured defensively they're all comfortable on the fall they have a distinct game plan playing out of the pressure and so I'm not surprised to see that from her that's who she was as a player it's come into her philosophy as a coach as well and there's a very mature and Veteran approach to this Arizona team so far press has worked out here they BL it back here's FY now driving into the box continuing to challenge the Arizona Defenders been up to the task so far here we got to make mention that Matty delene is with the under 20 national team so there's another highly talented player that's away through September 22nd uh with a tournament in Columbia and something we've seen from UNCC they've played a couple different systems of play they're coming out in the 4-33 today they've played out of a 361 as well earlier in the season that's when Dalene was here and part of the team olark was more inside so there a lot of different tactical things and also just Personnel seeing things switch around but it shows the versatility of the group also two players going into the nwsl in Ali sentner and Savvy King could have been on this team as well do you see that as a good thing some of the players leaving the college game early to go into the nwsl Casey well I think it shows the evolution and growth of the game and and it puts us more a little bit closer than what's happening in the world where these younger players are in a the professional environment earlier but the college game still is such a great ground for development and for these players to really prepare themselves for the Pro game so I think it really comes down to the individual player and you know those two players are having a lot of success at the next level and and that shows what the ACC is doing what North Carolina is doing um to prepare them adberg kept her run going up the right side and she's going to get it back here now it's a good run from the right back and it's an even better looking ball it's a dangerous ball and a shooting opportunity is blocked and it'll be a hand ball here free kick North Carolina but the right back Ella hbert Junior from Gig Harbor Washington getting forward down this right side but that's how quickly it can change there's been a lot of possession for the tar Hills but a hearn's on this backside gets this opportunity migle in the way goes to clear it and the Hand ball is eventually called but you can see the commitment from Arizona three players in the Box is that ball is being sent across so very easily they're going to be able to create opportunities and I would think that beckam moros is talking to them about this we're going to have to withstand some pressure they're going to generate opportunities but we just can't break and we're going to have ours too if we continue to play and build and that's what we saw in that moment first shot for Arizona since the third minute but was some good transition there and it was voy by hadberg and kembo down that right side who have paired up nicely there [Music] [Music] extended possession here for North Carolina we tick down towards 15 minutes left here in the first half [Music] to the end line another Corner earn and I like this from Olivia thas she's done really good to be that back to goal player in possession for the tar Hills so far but I like when she gets on the turn we saw it against Georgia for a goal she has a quick turn and can fire there she's looking to take on puts her head down and just becomes more dangerous in that moment delar Rose to take the corner the very cultured left foot you see the zonal marking inside the six from Arizona it goes in and around the penalty spot cleared for the moment North Carolina still in possession they get it whipped out wide again here's delar Ro knocks it inside FY back to delar [Music] ro crosses blocked and a key block it was does not allow entry into the penalty area and North Carolina in possession still it's kind of been the theme here in the first half and I think one of the things that they're going to have to really think about is maybe some deeper range opportunities as well as they get this possession and Arizona gets into a lower block there might be some opportunities from distance you don't want to be impatient but it could force Ry to make different types of saves here's Thomas now and the channel there that time it was a good ball in it almost seems like if North Carolina's going to score it might be a goal at comes in front of Arizona and here they are now in a moment of transition here Carolina's done a good job about uh getting back behind the ball here but Arizona remains in possession here what so incredibly important for Arizona was finding the feet of kmbo if you can do that on the way out where North Carolina is organized but you find her feet and you're able to keep it that just allows you to get your numbers forward and that's what they're able to do and now can rest on the ball a little bit in their attack oh that was a good idea that one time Ball but ultimately doesn't make its way [Music] through Carolina now towards the near post out came the goalkeeper Olivia Ry and she confronted the challenge there of Olivia Thomas it's going to be another corner now that Remy has been the first half story here coming up with two incredibly important saves here she has really kept them in this game with those two saves like you mentioned both on all Mark and it's going to take something really executing really well like that ball maybe being cut back to the top of the box just more open because she is everywhere at this moment Aran NY takes the corners from this side of the field and she drives it in towards the six oh she was trying to pick out the head of Thomas there still North Carolina ball comes back in the Box Ramy going to get there and takes a bit of a nudge looks like it goes out for the that right back position Del Rose off the corner it's one one Ed Away by [Music] [Music] Arizona this point the mission for Arizona is get to the half at nil nil here it really is because they've had to settle into that low block kind of a 4-1 41 with shelf in that Midfield space so just providing cover but the tar Hills are really being forced to be really cerebral in how they play because of the way that they're in this lower block Del Rose knocks it inside switch a play out on the left now towards the end line they Square it back and again positioned perfectly it's Megan chelf an IND industrious workmanlike Collective effort here from Arizona as you get a good look there at their holding midfielder Megan chelf from Newport Beach [Music] California big pillar on a day like today is that number six position against North Carolina it absolutely is it links the two lines defensively and you can see there when they had a drop on that last cross Shelf has to be at that first part as we see that Alvarez called for the foul but she's having to cover a lot of ground and make sure her positioning is just right to ensure that those midfielders that are joining the attack those passes are cut out to them what more do you want to see from North Carolina to maybe break down this uh lower block that Arizona's been in quite a bit I think one of the biggest things that they can do more and I mentioned it a bit ago was just the deeper range opportunities and then their service quality they're getting a lot of corner kicks and the service quality hasn't been there on every single one of them sometimes in these tight games that's really where you're looking to generate more opportunities cuz the possession is there so that's one thing I think that they can really look for going forward under eight minutes left here so penny has come on for allmark so we've seen a bevy of changes here to end the first half from both [Music] teams ball flaring out wide here this is fy's cross and taking a shot there was Olivia Ry who did not get there but she is down prone here so all eyes on her and all concern goes to her Olivia Thomas was in [Music] there both players down this is a ball that's hit in one of those areas that is really going to tempt a goal goalkeeper off her line and fy's in the wide space this is an incredibly dangerous ball and brave from both players and it does look like Thomas kind of held her run there right at the end but still big impact between those two and credit both of them for going for it but that's a bit scary moment right there it's an incredibly dangerous ball and a and a hard play from both of them so all concerned right now with Olivia Ry and Olivia Thomas of course Remy has come up with some really critical saves here in the first half the Thomas is up Arizona warming up backup goalkeeper Junior from Frisco Texas provided a multiple variety of saves here in the first half trying to get herself collected well I think what's hard about that one is there was full speed from Thomas and when Ry comes out in that moment she has to kind of stop in order to make the save so that's really hard because the impact right there she not able to protect herself at all in that moment so incredibly difficult and she looks to be trying to get going but right here you'll just see she's not able to stop she's having to keep her eyes fully on the ball so it's very very difficult to come back from that one but she she's at least up and sitting now which is great to see yeah four saves already here in the first half and two of them of the exceptional variety well and the saves like you mentioned so important so she can stay and they're going to want her to as she gets to her feet but she also is really comfortable with the ball out Fe and dictating play and that's something that's going to be really important against the Press of the tar Hills Sierra rri power was warming up the backup goalkeeper see if Ry can continue on boy and that ball was delivered in you know that area that forces a goalkeeper to make a save it really was right I didn't want to say too much about it there because there was obviously a temporary injury out of it but that's really where you want to put the ball because some goalkeepers won't be brave enough to come out because if you come you have to win it so credit to Ry and that she's back in front of her goal as well but that ball is exactly where you want it it's behind the Defenders but it's far enough out where a lot of goalkeepers don't have that range but she came up to it and was able to get it out and make sure nothing came from it the good news both players seem healthy here and it's restarted here by Olivia Ry after a stoppage like this you got to quickly get rebooted here because less than 8 minutes left in the first first half [Music] here ball possession dominated here in the first half by North Carolina UNC has nine shots four On [Applause] [Music] Rose kind of rotate up I think that something else that they can maybe bring into that second half or maybe even into the end of this first half is one of the holding mids one of the sixes rotate up when they're in possession because Arizona has two just sitting there right on the top of the penalty area so just more numbers forward causes the Arizona wild cats individually to have to make make decisions on who to come out against and that can open space very different game for Arizona they're coming off two consecutive 5-nil victories which those are different types of games and coming here dorren field and they have held up wonderfully here so far have yet to concede a goal this year out shooting opponents 44- to13 big step up today and they're living up to it certainly from a collective defending standpoint but here's Thomas and cleared again shot took a deflection and seeing it all the way and just helping it over the crossbar is Ry again and Olivia Thomas starts this entire thing but there's support in the Box to clear it out but then you've got Tessa Del Rose who steps up and it's a save there pushing it over the crossbar but those are those deeper range opportunities that are going to test Ry and maybe you'll get Second Chances but not on that one she does incredibly well to get it up and over takes the pace of the shot and just helps it on over the crossfire off the corner here n guy and the header just flashes wide dangerous ball there as it needed the slightest of deflections but it'll be another corner now for North Carolina who continues to stockpile Corner kicks here in the first half now at [Music] nine Dela Rose to take it no she's going to walk away from it this time and the guy will come over to this side of the field to take it the guy from huren Virginia graduate student transfer from Princeton goes towards the back post shelf headed it away it's still North Carolina this will be a huge win here with all this pressure and playing the game without the ball if Arizona can get to the half at nil nil and Casey they have not had 45 minutes of pressure like this so far in their first three games you're right in that and and they haven't given up a goal like you said all year but when you're winning games 5-0 550 1 0 it's different than what they're dealing with today so it's incredibly impressive from Arizona and I think mean shelf's a big part of that she's everywhere she's great in the air and she's a leader and keeps them very organized against UNCC [Music] attack was Weddington who won it back for the moment but Thomas coming off a dynamic two-goal performance against Georgia it really does take two or three players to defend against Olivia Thomas as Asha means comes into the game for her but she can turn to and just denying the attack there for the tar Hills but for them to kind of get into this game I think the outside backs are going to be very important and UNC is going to have to be aware of that here Olivia having called uh their National some of their national title wins North Carolina in the white in the Navy is Arizona Arizona is hung in here outstanding goalkeeping performance from Olivia rayy it is game on here in the second half and we'll see if there's any change from Arizona do they take a little bit more risk can they take a little bit more risk do you expect that Casey I think they can and I think it's about balancing when you do it if it if you go too forward too often then you leave those moments in transition for Carolina which they're also good in transitional moments as well so there's a little risk vers reward a little give and take and how they manage that will be interesting but I do think that the outside backs can get a little bit more forward for Arizona in certain moments in the game their most dangerous uh transitional moments were up the right side and that usually came from Ella hattenburg and noota Kel embo and that's something we saw against Northern Arizona as well you're you're exactly right the right side seems to be the more aggressive side going forward with penberg there overlapping kmbo we saw that a lot in the last matchup and then when they have gotten forward today it's been off that side North Carolina leaving uh taking up where they left off at the end of the first half excellent possession and they will get it out wide here again [Music] [Applause] going to earn a corner again it's the work of Kate FY who has been acceptional three-goal scorer this year the Junior from Phoenix might mean a little more to her playing against Arizona today this was dramatic what she did against Colorado she scored twice in the last couple of minutes Colorado thought they were pulling off in a major league upset against North Carolina the Buffs were feeling it and all of a sudden in the blink of an eye bosi has two goals and gets them a 3 to2 Victory on the road they started that road trip in Denver against the University of Denver as well off the corner North Carolina good defensive header so for you Casey give us a glimmer what was it like playing under ant endurance well I think one of the biggest things that it was like playing for him was that even when I was playing or to this day I feel like I would run through a brick wall when I would hear him speak even at my age now he was a motivator um he had a genuine interest in us as people as players but he never lost the demanding side of what he had he was brutally honest he gave us that feedback um and we were able to put that into our lives into our play and that was always a huge impact on me here comes FY now driving down the right side cross will come into the near poost Swept Away you did mention in the first half about Carolina's delivery and making it hit better areas maybe or the timing of certain runs yeah I think if they can drive a little bit more in line it forces the backline of Arizona to retreat even more that opens up space at the top of the penalty area but also on the set Pieces Just the service delivery the types of runs the angle of runs all of those little things when you're playing against a really structured back line it has to have pinpoint precision and that's something they're being tested on today chelf can't get there there's a give and go here's a good shooting opportunity to make a one off the crossbar unbelievable Linda olark beats everything but the crossball after a wonderful give and go one of the cleanest looks today that North Carolina has had and this is why I like olark inverted she's very creative plays in combination gets this one off and it looks like R might have gotten a little touch on that just to be able to push it off the crossbar and I think W Mark had the right idea opening up with the right foot it just needed to be hit lower you don't want to put that in an area where the goalkeeper can stand up and still make that save yeah the Olivia Ry uh goalkeeping exhibition continues to go on here that was clearly a save and we are watching The Art of goalkeeping today and I think she's had a really big performance like you said and and if I'm going to be a little bit critical like you don't want to put it in that range right where allmark puts it in the moment everything was right until that Finishing Touch you really want to keep it low you want to make a goalkeeper have to get down although Ry in the first half did that on the long range distance shot from allmark so I'm not sure what it's going to take to beat her because she's been up to the challenge here's at the top of the box another shot and another save this time the offering coming from bellber but you know you you think about goalkeepers it might look like a beach ball today to Olivia Ry it certainly gives the feel of that doesn't with the way that she's performed so far and Bella simber can pack a punch on her shot from distance as well she just really hasn't been able to do that so far in this game switch play here Arizona breaking out now and we have seen a goalkeeping exhibition from Olivia Remy both these teams undefeated Arizona has yet to concede a goal here in 2024 Linda omark has had her chances of shots here [Applause] today and Remy distributes to her left to rako hayami so how much of this becomes maybe mental now to North Carolina well what's incredibly nerve-wracking for a team that's had the majority of possession the majority of chances is that frustration can set in and when you're a team that's defending you're just looking for that one or two opportunities that you're going to have to convert on we see it happen all the time in soccer it can happen where you lose this game one Zer even when you have that majority of possession so North Carolina is going to have to stay really structured they're going to have to manage their emotions in the attack as well but also use that to fuel and motivate to try and go forward where if you're Arizona just play for that opportunity if you can't play into the game with more possession hadberg plays It Forward touch just got away speak a little bit about Giana Christensen and Megan chelf that Midfield yeah that midfield for them has had a workmanlike effort I mean it's not the the glamour stuff right now but it's a lot of closing people down isn't it it really is and they just had to maintain their shape really when Arizona's played out it's been more in the space but Shelf has been incredible though in that Midfield Elgen plays It Forward beautiful sweeping tackle there coming out of the middle was bouncing off Defenders is Olivia thomasia Thomas draws a lot of attention there doesn't she Glenn and she's just everywhere she can take on and they're going to have to stay aware of where she is on we're seeing here from Olivia Ry andark does everything right you're not going to get power on this header so you might as well get it back across nods it down that right there has to be a goal from big highlights but other Defenders who have had to really make sure that they're on point Carolina coming again and again it's it's Maya Brown talk about those tackles though because they're they're they're perfectly timed and tackling is an art and as I say that Maya Brown is now down but the two tackles she's made uh beautifully composed they are and and you want those type of tackles to be last itch you want to be in a position where you don't have to do that but sometimes you have to credit the attack and when you come across you cannot let the ball and the player both go past you so you have to really time that and she's done that incredibly well in moments it looks like she's suffering from it a little bit here but um each of those players has done really well we'll take a look at the last Challenge and simber pulls up a little bit doesn't really go at full speed and brown is able to get it and what's even more impressive about what she's done is she completes that pass after the tackle and has helped Arizona maintain possession concern from beckam Moro moros here with her Center back Maya Brown Maya Brown's a junior from Carolton Texas ran track in high school played with the club the Dallas Texans and she's put on a timing and tackling exhibition here today see uh as hge will come on [Music] now all right for Maya Brown all right Ronda H for starts last year sophomore from Bethesda Maryland she will get thrust into a very important game [Applause] here and that might adust the positioning of shelf she might have to play a little bit deeper just give her a few minutes her even though she's played some to come into the game settle in a bit so you might see that position shift from the sixes circulating the ball nicely here's North Carolina here's a ripped in shot and that just goes wide boy that jumped off the foot from longer range and that's something you brought up in the first half that was gtino and you said that North Carolina does need to provide some offerings from longer range well that's a center back right there stepping up and she scored already this year so these opportunities what that does to a back line it just makes them think wait should I step and put pressure on that then if you can figure out in that moment when they do step to then combine and play and draw them out then now you're a bit more imp predict able in the attack so I expect to see a little bit more of that Tino by the way is a freshman from Dexter Michigan she has a sister that plays professionally at PSG in France after a career at Notre Dame and Latino got credited with the game-winning goal the last time North Carolina played here a couple days ago against Georgia in that dramatic 4 to3 Victory and that's another thing when teams are in Low Blocks right Casey your Defenders can't stand at the halfway line with one Striker some of them need to join in and help the attack you're right and we didn't really address it in the first half but a big part of white Arizona wasn't able to play out is when they cleared it the positioning of the players was stepped so high to be able to pick it up and that really helped them defensively and here maybe is a chance for Arizona seven saves so far far for Olivia Ry not sure she's going to make 18 which is the record at Arizona held by Jennifer wble back against lyola marmount in 1994 that's going away his back that one might stand for a while that's a lot of say one game I was thinking the same thing I just said what you were thinking that's right wherever Jennifer wble is I hope she is tuning in today because um it's going to have to be a lot more saves to break her record but we have seen an amazing goalkeeping performance today from Olivia Ry North Carolina still trying to figure out how to break them down chance creation wise what more do you want to see what subtleties can maybe North Carolina do well and another part of breaking down a L block is using the width so moving the ball side to side change of point and doing it quickly with a speed of play that causes them to shift so that might be something that could bode well for North Carolina but they've given up goals in the last games we didn't talk about it but also just staying stingy defensively we talk about all the attack as they give up this corner kick but we talk about the attack but also they want to try to make improvements on how they defend and not giving up as many opportunities on frame that was Rose Calin getting forward the Freshman from Highland Branch California it's going to be a corner here now this is a captive moment I think from two perspectives because this is now an Arizona team that is pulled out and has a lot of players extended forward off this corner it might be an opportunity for a transitional moment Ross will come in and the delivery there well that's a killer on a day like today you don't get many corners to not get decent delivery that will frustrate Becca moros and that D there in that moment needs to get that in a playable area especially when you've got shelf on the far post she's incredibly good in the air just scored against Northern Arizona in their last game on Thursday so when you're not generating a lot of opportunities forward you have to make the most of them and that starts with service quality and D last year nine goals is one of the top players it's been a tough day for Strikers maybe that's about the change here and there's speaking of some good lateral cover there some very good lateral cover there coming from Trinity Armstrong Center back comes out to provide the cover in the big tackle getting a little bit more commitment maybe to go forward here from Arizona they're going to curl a cross that'll go off the side netting again trying to get forward was Ella hadberg well I do say think we see a difference with Arizona with players getting a bit more forward they're having to do it in transition so being a little bit more vertical in those transition moments playing balls in [Music] behind they won it back they seem to be taking a little bit more risk getting a few more players in front of the ball now here against UNC wild on the day some of the spectacular variety both teams undefeated at 3 and0 Shanti Weddington trying to turn out of there she's got a goal on the ear against Pacific in the 50 win she's a sophomore from Irving Texas and Carolina wins it [Music] back what we're noticing is Arizona is playing their Wingers a little bit more pinched in so when they do win the ball there's four players in that Midfield space that they're able to connect and play out with that's allowing them to get numbers a little bit more forward and North Carolina's dealt with it well you can definitely see a little bit of an adjustment there so they're not too much in the low block in this second half Elgen was trying to go forward the going to knock it back [Music] here delar Rose has drifted Central stretch out on the right to the end Line crossing opportunity potentially here goes off the side netting has the ball gotten off the feet quick enough from Carolina I think speed of play can increase I think it's been really good patience but sometimes with players when you want them to play patient it means a little slow lower at times so can the speed of play be better the ideas are great and then I go back to this but it's the service quality they're getting into spaces and I'm sure Damon Nas is happy with that but that ball going into the side netting is just not what you want in that moment so they have to concentrate a little more on that and he he said expect learning moments from this team and the other thing he wants is a very short-term memory but they might be in a learning moment right now here against a low block team I think so and and it's incredibly hard to play against a low block team and I don't think that Becca moros definitely has Arizona in this on purpose I think a lot of it is due to the possession of the tar Hills but one of the things they're having to figure out too is how to manage frustration when you are dominating and how to make sure that you stay organized defensively if Arizona builds into the game [Music] more ticking down towards the 25-minute Mark here on the ACC Network roll of the so of the foot from FY Wedington tried to knock it Forward getting forward is sure if that's Armstrong or gtino gatino shot will come in and it's parried away again that was a tester it skipped in front of Olivia Ry I believe that's another save here center backs of North Carolina jumping into the attack well this is gtino going forward I like this from the center back looking to take on Space just a kind of an awkward fall and then makes contact there with the Midfield Arizona but it's a little bit awkward when she just wasn't able to touch the ball but gtino and Armstrong you're right are definitely starting to dribble penetrate a little more in Midfield and kind of forc the issue of the wild cats to step out and we were told by Damon nahas that bellino will join in and jump into the attack on occasion so be ready for it Arizona was they want it back in a good area this is a real good chance for North Carolina to make it one again it's Ry this time at the near post North Carolina getting some clear chances here in the second half but you just got to wonder if they can beat goalkeeper Olivia Ry [Music] today well one thing you got to be happy with if you're the North Carolina staff is the pressing moments the chance creation the guy does really well here to set up fossy but lifting it again that's a perfect spot for a goalkeeper they want to make the save at that height shot again going down as rain [Applause] pass was the right one from the guy but it was a tough shooting angle there and I think that angle is going to be tough to beat Remy on this day for sure you're absolutely right on that one and she had a player off to her left as well so could have potentially played a player with a little better shooting opportunity but if you're North Carolina you are generating the chances so you just have to continue to go to work it's a bad giveaway there's a whistle [Applause] here there's a Thomas who picked the ball up and as ry's playing out it looked like there might have been a block with the back I don't know if a hand ball was was called on that one but Ry has to be careful because Thomas will pick her moments to press can you imagine after the goalkeeping performance Olivia Ry has if North Carolina had scored there through Thomas on a day where she's done everything right and I believe that must have been a hand ball [Music] called if that had come off her back what a moment that would have been what an unconventional way of scoring the opening goal we remain nil nil Glen Davis Casey white North Carolina Arizona very game Arizona has come into North Carolina [Music] [Music] here posi comes over she has been a [Music] threat free kick here Armstrong to take it chance to load the edge of the Box up here obviously Olivia Thomas is a [Music] target six across the 18 yd box here for North Carolina do they get the delivery ramy's going to come and ry's going to claim it the man box well today she's extremely confident right now cuz I would expect almost a goalkeeper to come and punch that but she does incredibly well to just snag it make sure there's no other opportunity let's go a great command of box took a heavy collision with Olivia Thomas bounced back up to continue to play and continue to thrive she's now got eight [Music] saves there is a nice level of composure and lack of panic despite the fact that Arizona Casey has played without the ball here today and has had to do so much defending and closing people down and maintaining their shape uh which can really weigh on you they can and I think that says a lot about Becca moros and her staff that calmness that belief that we can keep the ball that we can possess and we're seeing that out of Arizona here even under immense pressure from North Carolina they still want to play out they still want to play their style of soccer um in that possession oriented game and I that's nice to see she just knew that it would be a little bit quicker decision- making than the previous three games that they had had and I think in the second half we're starting to see that payoff that they're making their decisions at a faster Pace in becam Morrow's fourth season for her is an assistant coach in the nwsl with Gotham FC former WPS n WSL professional played in Japan told this great story about playing in Japan learning the language uh the way the Japanese play the game what she took from that she said to us before this game Carolina's got no weaknesses that's the sense I [Applause] [Music] have big switch of play it's not going to get there it's headed away second Ball's picked up here and for the moment like a good moment for Nicole D but the free kick will be called restarted here by North Carolina do they have to up the sense of urgency here I think a little bit but you don't want to lose the style of play because it's working you're getting chances I really think it's about decision making and execution in the final third but look for opportunities to combine to take on in the 1V one and force the issue slashing inside getting the right footed shot off there really good cut in with the out side of the right foot was Linda olar it's not for lack of trying today from Omar who's been denied like everybody else by Olivia Ry and what we're noticing is that allar might beat two players but there's not a lot of numbers forward in those transitional moments for North Carolina it's really just the player on the ball and Thomas but Arizona has two center backs that are just sitting back and looking to clean up things as they come through or block shots and so far it's working McKenna Dominguez comes on is represented El Salvador internationally Olivia Olivia Thomas will get a break here and you will expect to see her back in this one you can reenter in the second half but a frustrating day for her and she's certainly banged away at it trying to produce the game's first goal comes off a two- goal performance against Georgia and her moment could still come here she's got three shots on the day all three have been on target well what this change does is it pushes windamar inside now this is going to show a different style of play to what Olivia Thomas does olark plays in between the lines a little bit more looks to play in combination Olivia Thomas looks to be a little more direct they can each do a bit of both but what this might do is either open something for allmark or if Olivia Thomas re-enters now the Arizona defense might not be able to adapt as easily [Applause] here is a red shirt Junior Elgen Armstrong switches [Music] it dominant statistically in all facets of the game today is North Carolina except in goalkeeper saves Olivia Ry putting on a heck of a performance here today there is the domination in shots 21-2 in North Carolina in their first three games had 19 shots 23 and 19 and there's a good chance they'll have the most shots of the Season here today yet they have not breached the goal of Arizona a little higher line of Confrontation here now from the wild cats but you mentioned Casey that the two center backs for Arizona have been pretty comfortable in the middle here today is it the obligation of North Carolina to move them and tempt them and get them out of the middle yeah I think it's just that counter movement have one run then have a second run coming where they have to react to two things it's almost impossible to do that but there hasn't been that ability to get those players right around the center forward so there's that opposite movement which can really move Center back so if they can do more of that it might be easier for well here comes North Carolina to the Edline the shot is off the post it Ricochet is off the back of Ry and out for the corner unbelievable and again it's Linda olar who continues to be now one of the most dangerous threats here for the Tar Heels olar's been incredibly successful today getting in the 1b1 I like this I like that she goes right at it she tries to sneak it in the near post it's a fortunate bounce for Ry Dominguez was coming in on the back side ball comes into the near post headed away there by aimi and that shot and there's that first goal finally North Carolina has scored it's a long range hit and the Tor heels have taken a one lead here and it had to be something special on this day and it is it's Tessa delar Ro it was is going to take something almost 10 point perfect and delar Rose is the one that delivers in this moment it comes off a corner kick and a clearance and it is from a deeper position with the left foot just up and over and you can see the dip on it I don't know if ry's Vision was impaired there but this is a great strike trying to bend it to the back post it goes up and over and it really was just taking advantage of that little extra space at the top of the box for the Finish spectacular goal from Tesla delar R Ro had a goal against Denver now has two on the year and this now has the potential to stand as a gamewinner here today with under 15 minutes left it's the first goal that Arizona has conceded this year and now they're going to have to throw caution to the wind and come out and take a bit of risk here well you can see why they haven't conceded a goal I mean they they are very very well organized well coached team with great goalkeeping behind them but you're right something going to have to change here and I think it's going to be equally a test for North Carolina because they've given up quite a few goals this year so they're going to have to stay organized but if I know this group they're going to want to keep the ball as much as possible and just limit Arizona being able to get on it at all and generate anything forward yeah to your point conceded two at Colorado and a three to2 win and conceded three against Georgia in a 4 to3 win meded entertaining that's for sure and look at that piece of data right there allowed multiple goals in each for the first time since 2022 and damid nahas talked about that just some individual defending mistakes a little bit too aggressive in the defending final third so they're going to have to show some maturity here too just to see this one out and over the top it goes dangerous moment here dealt with by North Carolina [Music] but your goalscoring hero right now is Tessa Del [Music] Ro now North Carolina just can sort of sit on it [Music] here play an entire game really doing a lot of Defending great Collective work as Arizona and now all of a sudden you got to flip the switch here and get more attack oriented and that can be really hard to do because you've been doing that for so long in this game and just looking for some transition moments it can be hard to really make that switch but you can see kembo yeah offside in that moment but trying to push the pace going behind the back line I don't expect them to be overly direct because that's not their game but just trying to get more numbers forward maybe a little more risk at at the back um because they won't be worried about giving up an additional goal if they can't create opportunities forward 76 minute tell Rose the lone goal in this one and what a hit it [Applause] [Music] was feet and that's what sets up this moment but I think a lot of it too is Arizona just trying to get a little bit higher out trying to create opportunities but really good off the feet of simber back goes off the outside a little bit more in the wide Channel simber likes to be creative and go forward and N guy just really links the two of them like you mentioned very simple in possession does a job great pass completion and a player that really just allows the other midfielders to be great at what they do giving away there on Force there it will be a throw in now for Arizona who are pretty desperate here to get the ball forward and get the game in the other half of the field at this point both teams coming into this at 3 and0 and Olivia Thomas we expected her to get back into this game and she will be last year in North Carolina went 132 and8 got to the quarterfinals of the NCAA and we're up 3 0 on Brigham Young and conceded four goals in the second half and got knocked out of the tournament Arizona did not get into the NCAA tournament they were 68 and5 last year and they were in the Pack 12 they're now in the Big 12 in their first year there's Thomas trying to bring this down tries to play it forward here Dominguez oh that's a good ball from Dominguez and may have deserved A better ending and they linked up just like that against George for the opening goal in that game and this is really good penny plays in combination with Dominguez it's off the back shoulder the defender doesn't see it coming it's just a technical execution to direct that on frame but I like Dunn and Emily Fox a word on them Casey well two great players I thought they both had amazing performances very steady in those outside back R both play them in different ways Crystal Dunn looks to get forward a little more Emily Fox just the stal work defensively but just was so much fun to watch the Olympics and the run to the gold medal yeah what a wonderful Collective group of players all there with the mission really restored uh some great US Women's National Team Pride winning that gold and doing it in such dramatic fashion great leadership from Lindsay heran you had the Triple Espresso up front which I know you love yes I do I I just thought there were so many positives about the performance defensively they were really stingy a lot of interchange any attack it was exciting to watch but controlled and they executed and got the gold medal so it just went went extremely well and I think was a great bounce back from the World Cup experience the year before Emma Hayes North Carolina today and Clare Gagney and it only took one save and that was her first of the game but it was a big one it was dangerous 3v1 and Foltz plays a great ball across for that for that opportunity but it certainly looked like that was going to be an opportunity it looked kind of like the one that Ry saved against Omar early in the first half sa relief from North Carolina Thomas is but they have done it today to a point where they've along with the goalkeeping of Olivia Ry have really positioned themselves to be in this game and nearly get an equalizer yeah it's been a really professional approach from Arizona and be mo has talked about it a little bit more veteran team than what she has had in her previous three years you can see it Thomas is one it back does she have support she goes herself and scores Olivia Thomas has gotten a second for North Carolina and this will likely do it here today persistence paying off it is now 2-n North Carolina over Arizona this opportunity comes off the press of North Carolina they don't like to sit back they do it right off the throw in Olia Thomas steps get a touch in look at this little touch right here looks like she's going to cross she goes right left right away finishes with the left foot you can only do this when there's other runs above the ball and I like that there were players getting in the Box for Carolina she takes the prep touch and a great finish to beat Ry know is a striker and she beats her at the near post now you could be taking your foot off the pedal at this point and boy she makes that goal herself it's a third on the year for her and Olivia Thomas a night where she's been besieged by Defenders and closed down and limited space has gotten her goal when most of the time you tell your Strikers to finish that far post but it takes a real goal scorer with a nose for goal to understand when to go to that near post space because it does throw a goalkeeper off because that's not normally where you're trying to finish in that moment but Olivia Thomas finally rewarded for all the good work that she's done so far in this [Music] game cu the goal comes 12 minutes after the delar RO goal and it is 2-nil North [Music] Carolina back to Ry under two minutes left [Music] here remarkable how this game has changed because Arizona had had a chance to equalize if not for a huge save take on North Dakota next up for Arizona will be pepper Dy season comes and goes very very quickly high volume of games a good tactical battle here today between North Carolina and in Arizona we certainly have both these teams have really shown well it's been a really tight game it's going to do it goals from delarose and Thomas quick thought Casey from you to wrap it up I think for Carolina
