we are somewhat of a new era of Michigan football obviously 13 players drafted the most by any team defending the 2023 National Championship Chiron Moore is your head coach just one starter back on offense of course Coulson Loveland and what a game he had but there's a lot of unknowns and I think we point out the obvious at the beginning we knew there were a lot of unknowns with this team coming in we didn't know the quarterback was going to be we saw both Davis Warren and Alex orgy in this one and that in a couple of minutes you're thinking wow the defense we knew they were going to be good they forced an interception a short field for Davis Warren to work with moves the ball down the field and then Alex orgy comes in fools everybody you know he comes into the game you think all right quarterback run and it's a little play action toss down a pass to Donovan Edwards who walks into the Edward into the end zone and you're thinking here we go business as usual this is the Michigan Wolverines team we had hoped to see and early on it was but as the great leag cor would say not so fast after that the offense really stalled and you could make the case they didn't really wake up until that final clutch drive when the game was not quite in the balance but uh you saw Michigan go on that seven playay 75 yard drive and Davis Warren connected with to with coulston lovelin for the 18 yard touchdown score and other than that there just really wasn't a lot to build on as far as confidence in this offense and confidence in what is obviously going to be one of the biggest games of the year already this isn't like last year where you have tuneup game after tune-up game after tuneup game to find tune things and get ready for the big 10 slate no Texas the Texas Longhorns come to town to next Saturday at noon and there is a lot to correct and a lot to improve upon before that huge showdown in an arbor against the Texas Lauren horns out of the SEC let's get used to saying that right with conference realignment in the first I know we had week zero last weekend but the first official weekend of college football in my mind you've got a lot to get used to saying with as far as the conference realignment the 12 team playoffs so many changes in college football obviously for me the rule changes that are most notable the two-minute warning you've got the radio communication in the helmet now like they have at the NFL as well well as the like I said the the two-minute warning there so some significant changes to college football and for Michigan again let's not get too you know too crazy with this one the spread for this game was 20 and a half I saw it around that depending on where you do your shopping and the late pick six I know um with the interception return 86 yards by Will Johnson what a play that was by the way one too many screen passes from the Fresno State offense will Johnson leads it and Icees the game with an 86y pick six and we knew this defense was going to be good and we knew that was going to be the strength of the team and I think it was kind of fitting that that was the exclamation point and the conclusion of this game was a will Johnson 86 yard pick six but we got to be honest with ourselves there was times in this fourth quarter where you're feeling okay okay my goodness uh let's let's figure out a way to put this one on ice and Michigan finally did and you know there's so many cliche sayings in football but one of my all-time favorites is I'd I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty and at times you could shock this one up to an ugly win but again happy that Michigan was able to get it done and ultimately earn the win to move to one and0 what else are we going to talk about on today's lockdown Wolverines postcast well of course the will Johnson pick six ends it we touched on that the QB battle very curious and if you're just joining us for the first time you're just listening for the first time I love collaboration game and wide receivers there's a there's a name from the past Lloyd Carr I love it and uh I I love the the reference to one of the all-time greats Lloyd car and man there were some great receivers in those days the list goes on and on Lloyd Carr knew how to recruit wide receivers and that is for sure brillan Edwards Mario Manning I won't bore everyone with the list but you know it goes on and on and and and that is one of the things that I wrote down as far as questions that uh that you have until not a very long time to figure out because again Texas comes to town is what wide receiver is going to step up outside of coulston Loveland coulston Loveland eight receptions 87 yards in the touchdown we knew and and I know he's listed as a tight end plays like a wide receiver still a tremendous tight end uh blocking tight end they touched on that a couple of times in the broadcast tonight but somebody else from this Michigan wide receiver room has to step up T whether it's Tyler Morris Kendrick Bell samage Morgan all of those guys I think are are capable of you know being productive wide receivers for this team but the other part of that equation as you mentioned there got to be quarterback that can get them the ball Davis Warren tonight 15 of 25 118 yards and that's less than five yards per reception he had the one interception where he severely underthrew that ball and the one touchdown Which again that was a clutch Drive in a game that was still hanging in the balance showed a lot of poise on that drive to go seven 75 yards and seven plays and ultimately get the touchdown pass to Colston Loveland but again you know you need it's going to take more than one successful touchdown drive to beat a team of the caliber of Texas and I know that's pointing out the obvious but there is not a lot of time to fix it if you're the University of Michigan and the old cliche goes we know in in football the most Improvement you're going to make is from week one to week two so and shron Moore said it postgame a lot of things to clean up and I think uh that will be the focus point in practice ahead of that game against the University of Texas so final score in this reason why this Wolverine's defense put the clamps down at the end of this game in the exclamation point the 75 yard touchdown drive also helped and I would be remiss too I should have said this from the very beginning when we did our first lock on lions postcast said what's happening to lock on lions no no no this is just an addition to lock on Wolverine so Isaiah hul me and I met a couple of different times happy to be with him on this Venture of lockdown Wolverines postcast just a postgame show you'll have lockdown Wolverines with Isaiah Hall all throughout the season day in and day out what a tremendous job he does covering this team so this is not replacing it's just an add-on and again I meant to say that from the very beginning and what else do you need to know other than it's a live postgame show discussing the Michigan Wolverines that's how it works so 30-1 the win for Michigan in this one and other than the offense struggling at times the defense playing really really well especially forcing the two turnovers early in the game as well as at the end of the game with the 86 yard pick six I thought the kicking by zado was impressive iive and especially before those last two touchdowns those field goals had the chance to be the difference in the game and it's so crucial to have that excellent kicking game especially in close games and I all the time preach special teams special teams and not just the special teams that put points on the board obviously that's important as well but field position battles can be won and lost with solid execution in special teams kick returns punt returns doing the little things right and I thought Michigan's special teams today led by zado with the four field goals was really really good you got to give him a lot of credit um especially you know in a new environment and the way he was able to really just put forth a solid effort and be that um be that guy if you will for the Michigan kicking team and uh that was really really impressive for um the Michigan Wolverines which you love to see all right other notes I thought kle Mullin was really good rushing the ball 15 carries 92 yards he came alive late and that 75 yard touchdown drive he had a couple of really impressive runs which begs the question does he become rb1 based on the performance today I know Donovan Edwards had the touchdown early in the game but he didn't look as explosive as you might have hoped and I'm not I'm I'm G to tell you this right up front this is my first postgame show with lockdown Wolverines post I'm not a huge box score guy stats guy analytics guy everybody on lock on tigers and the locked on Tigers postcast knows that about me I think there's a lot to be said about the eye test and the ey test would tell you that Donovan Edwards just looked not quite up to his level of standard his level of play 11 carries for 27 yards just two and a half yards per touch um and the longest run he had was seven yards again he did have that receiving touchdown two catches or two receptions but one was for three yards and he had that touchdown for the Michigan Wolverines but again I want to see more from him and based on the way mullings run the ran the ball tonight he might be the guy that becomes a little bit more featured than Donovan Edwards but a lot of people tune in in so we'll get back to the comments as we like to do on a lockdown Wolverines postcast Demetrius mcneel college game day is coming to an arbor don't tell me Lee Coro is picking Texas over Michigan at the end of the show yeah Lee cor so crazy I watched game day today I also watched a little bit of fox big noon kickoff both those shows are just so exciting and do such a tremendous job covering the game and it's so great to have college football back but Lee Corso Still Still uh giving them giving them hell on the set and giving us his picks at the end of it even as old as he is God bless him comment here from Devon Morhead I hate sports fans come on Cut war in a break he ain't started since 2019 pretty decent oine needs work yeah Michigan got so spoiled with how great that offensive line was from a year ago and really over the course of the last couple of years but I thought again and I hate to put all the stock into that last touchdown drive but it gave you that glimpse into what this offense can be physically impeding their will on on the defense and an imposing running attack that opens up the pass game we saw that on the last Drive let's hope they can carry that into them and carry that momentum into week to against the University of Texas but the Davis Warren and Alex orgy conversation is is interesting especially because they have such contrasting Styles and a good buddy of mine Tony Garcia a beat writer for the University of Michigan I saw him tweeting about ory's shortcomings inabilities to throw the ball and comparing it to what Davis Warren can bring you through the air it's just an interesting discussion that I think will continue to evolve as we see more and more of a sample size for both of these guys couple other comments one from killer Panda here we should have gotten a QB from the portal I wanted Malik Murphy it's unacceptable how bad our QB room is yeah I am a little bit surprised um with especially coming off a national championship a national brand the facilities I mean they had a little piece on the locker room renovation on the NBC pregame show Matt Castle was in there and my goodness I mean that is it's it's it's like a palace it's nice than a cruise ship it's unbelievable everything they have here there and I know those are just little things but I guess chalk it up to how appealing it would be to be a Michigan W marine and the fact that Michigan couldn't um or chose however you want to put it not to really pursue any bigname quarterbacks in the transfer portal was somewhat interesting all right appreciate everybody tuning in and I appreciate yards with a Davis Warren touchdown pass to Colston lovelin from 18 yards out a pick six from will Johnson that put the nice exclamation point on the end of this game and he read the screen pass beautifully intercepted it and nobody was going to touch him and then oh yeah by the way four field goals from Zada in this one as well okay so looking ahead next week University of Texas boy did they dominate today um a top five team in the country first year in the SEC and this is why you come to Michigan for big games like these and we didn't have to wait as long this year and I for one am excited about that I think the new landscape of college football is awesome 12 team playoff which is also important to note you know it's not like the old days with the BCS where a loss really ends your season or even with the four team playoff where a loss could end your season no 12 team playoffs but we know Michigan's goals Big 10 Championship that's right beat Ohio State and get to the playoffs and defend that 2023 national championship and it's all in front of this Michigan Wolverines team but they got to find a quarterback they got to find somebody to lead this offense and I'll give you my two cents on the matter I think it's got to be Davis Warren moving forward because the ability or the inability rather to not be able to throw the ball the way Alex orgy struggled at times and just miss routine throws makes him so one-dimensional that planning to defend a one diim quarterback albeit you know how good he can be on his legs he's a physical specimen we know that but planning to defend a one-dimensional quarterback just makes life so much easier from a defensive mindset and from the defensive coordinator mindset and so with Davis Warren's ability to move the ball down the field through the air put those passes in tight Windows let's hope he can be a little bit better with that let's hope some guys from this wide receiver room step up and again we talked about these receivers coulston lovelin he was phenomenal tonight he'll continue to be the rock of this receiving CT even from the tight end position but Tyler Morris has to do more Kendrick Bell has to do more Sage Morgan has to do more and maybe some running backs help the receiving uh attack out we saw Donovan Edwards with the early touchdown catch but can he be more of a focal point in the passing game these are all questions that you hope to be answered before um it's too late in kicking off against the University of Texas so appreciate everybody tuning in to a live lockdown Wolverines
