adjusting early on to see her in this BFC kit but I'm sure our eyes will adjust pieces here as they're still in preseason and you've got coach Romeo trying to push a few different buttons for a lack of a better term and figure out how all the pieces fit there's a couple young players kanyo and Shon Lee coming in so we're not really sure exactly where they will go but that's probably where those like Kira Walsh in that holding mid roll for sure and then ralo poror and Graham across the front line a lot of Firepower from those three and poror has been just on fire so far in this preseason she's been scoring in basically every preseason game for Barcelona and you throw into the fact what she's coming from the success she's coming from at wulfsburg in Germany had 18 goals in the Bundesliga this past season four time polish footballer of the year two time Bundesliga Golden Boot one time Champions League Golden Boot so I think poror is good at scoring goals up top Casey I think in preseason we really had no clue to be honest you're right and you have the few players that know exactly where they're going to be but there's auxiliary players that can play in two or three positions but that's what makes Barcelona so hard to play against there's so much interchange they're all very comfortable on the ball and so there's a lot of fluidity in the way they play so even though you see a starting 11 come out and this is their system of play their players can fill different spots and that can be very hard to defend you mentioned that interchangeability be it with Coach Harald do now in Washington or somebody like aan Carlos amaros who is part of this influx now of of Spanish coaches in nwsl interchange ability is the word that they all use doesn't matter when where or what the case is whoever your left back is might have to pop up at right Midfield and so on and so forth and we'll see that in its purest form for Barcelona tonight yeah you're always trying to create numbers up situations at the highest level and just manipulate the other's defensive structure and it's very hard to do when you get to the highest level of professional women soccer and so more of that players understand that and understand spaces the better they can be and both of these teams are teams that really like to play in possession in that [Music] way Emily MZ for M Maro and against Barcelona it is and that's a demand on them and culture of playing out of the back you can just see that they recognize they have a 2V1 that's Rachel Hill loading it through toward kundi oh shaala was waiting for it now with Jonathan herdes as we mentioned coaching the Washington Spirit can you if your AFC take anything from tonight and keep it in mind for when you face Washington NEX Ki down holding her face for that exchange rubbing her [Music] eye and just a lot going on here bouncing sh and Lee juggles out of here and it looks like it hit may have hit kundan nji right before that but you just see the sophistication of the Barcelona players trying to play out of the back but she appears to be okay [Music] it's one thing that's always stuck with me from another coach in nwsl from the opportunities we've had to chat with some of these head coaches it came a couple of years ago during the women's cup that was held in Louisville and an nwsl head coach in that tournament had mentioned that one thing they look forward to whenever things like that those cups come up or these friendlies come up there's more than one way to play this game and we've seen it the last two summers of the World Cup and the Olympic level to have these moments now to see okay maybe Barcelona does this thing really well how can we adopt it and make it our own in nwsl to make ourselves better what you have here tonight another opportunity like that for BFC well I think you bring up a really good point too is so much of the coaches at the highest level really focus on their own principles because you want to know like what is expected out of us and you don't want to steer too much away from that but at the same time this allows you to prepare for different types of pictures you're going to face different teams you're going to see and then like you said maybe adopt one or two things that can layer into your attack or layer layer into your defensive structure and that's what these are so important for car W slips it through Jonna Fernandez centers smz [Music] clears just combing through some footage from last Champions League or some of the biggest games for Barcelona in La Liga this past year in the terrific season they had there's there's really no one way that the attack works it's inside to out it's outside to in they can beat you in so many ways because every player out there possesses such class that's why they're so incredibly hard to play is because they don't just keep it in small areas they know when to play direct they understand when you're rotated and how to take advantage but if they need to play indirect and keep the ball they can now some of that tight space play you mentioned Hansen gets it back brilliantly worked Hansen fishes it across muez the flex off of her and out for a [Music] corner and Hansen does incredibly well right here there's the run on the outside which is what draws the Defenders and then just continuing her run in there it's perfectly weighted from Walsh just the service not on point there but earns the corner kick but that's the type of possession you're seeing 3v2 2v WS to get into space [Music] taken short driven in and no trouble for Rolling In the End rolled right away back to Barcelona picked up by Nazareth another newly acquired player Kea Nazareth for Barcelona spent the last few years at Benfica in Portugal 57 goals in 68 games Player of the Year in Portugal last year in a Top Flight Leon through sh and Le is it around for Hansen Hansen Maro stumbling for her footing now it's whipped in toward poror goes all the way through seemed like a miscommunication there on the back end but AFC lives to tell the tail well it's a good ball into a space that's really dangerous it's between the backline retreating towards their own goal and Caitlyn Roland as a goalkeeper not knowing who's going to take it it looked like poror thought that maybe Roland would have that because she didn't really expect it to come across in that [Music] [Music] moment Barcelona again coming off of a Champions League title have lost a bunch of players Barcelona in this off season including oshaa new coach per Romeo coming in it's a little bit of a rebuild but more of a retool than a rebuild with the players that we've mentioned that they brought in between a payor and azth and so on and so forth and oh by the way they still have the last three poor winners on their roster in bonmati and puta so it's again more of a retool than a rebuild but there are some key pieces that they do have on the way out and you really keep that core together and that's what's important of a club that has had so much success High Press wins it back but the whistle blown just as t b was going to come through have a go for a goal or lay it off to oshaa either way looked promising for BFC well I like the pressing there from Bay FC and you got to expect that Barcelona is going to look really comfortable in possession but there are some new pieces within the lineup like we are speaking about and so you want to take advantage you don't want to sit back too deep because that's when Barcelona gets even more com able on the ball so I like those moments especially by Tess B there to step in and try to win it while they're in expansive shape over the top again to poror flag stays down do playing in Barcelona the same could be said the other way around as we see the way the game is played you won't see this type of High Press athleticism over there so this is an interesting test Barcelona as well yeah there's a lot played in the middle third a little bit more of a chess match at times not to say that we don't have those chess matches but it's more in the middle third of the field now they're seeing this High Press and when they were pressing there it was five against five in the attacking final third for BFC so to play out of that's difficult and that's where daco goes in yes the foul was called but it's a good press there is per Romeo again in his first year as the head coach because harz you see the bottom there departed for nwsl for the Washington Spirit Well show here with boso leaves Lucy bronze leaves so a lot of notables on the way out for Barcelona part of the team that was just historic last season in every way again they win Champions League only one loss in the process it came in the first leg of the semi-final against Chelsea but they rebounded from that one 2-0 in the second leg and they were unblemished in their regular season as well in La Liga 29 wins one draw so only one loss in all competitions last year for Barcelona you almost feel like that we might need you to repeat that because that is so incredibly hard to do yet they're doing it year after year I mean you do that one year it's impressive but to do it year after year for the last three it's almost unbelievable this past year again it was 29 wins in a draw in La Liga play the year prior it was 281 And1 The Year prior the 2122 season a perfect 30 and0 now it's floated toward Hill and oh Shala for another giveaway out of the back by Barcelona get out of it unharmed well the press is really working and it's not the first person it's not the second person it's usually the third or fourth wave of pressure that gets it it's kund dangi in this moment and it's just that execution after the Press what are they going to do with the ball after they win it and if they can tighten that up it's going to make Barcelona uncomfortable at the [Music] back speaking of The Undefeated nature of Barcelona these two the last three seasons tie it back to nwsl do you think we've got an invincible season on the way for Orlando we got nine games to go at 12 wins and five draws that could take home some history in nwsl well I probably would have said oh I don't know at the beginning of the season when Orlando Pride was doing so well and they're proving that that they can they can do it so you never know they really could but it's every game is so incredibly hard but one thing that Orlando pride is doing is they're adapting every game to their opposition so incredibly well they're being stingy defensively they've got a lot of different goal scorers that are stepping up so they're looking really tough to beat right now I'll be honest they're going to have to come here from Barcelona 17 years old from Zurich Switzerland just signed this summer wearing number 20 there Center of your picture spent the last couple of years in the Swiss Top Flight at 15 and 16 years of age did didn't play much but to be playing at all at that age impressive and in the 24 games she played she did score five goals in the top line of s in the last two years already has three caps for the Swiss senior national team starting to get her feet wet there as well and now starting to get integrated for Barca well in the first 16 minutes I can tell you one thing she doesn't look like she's 17 giving away oh Shala against Barcelona AIS Shala a very very dampened celebration against her former the respect shown but it had to be oshaa against Barcelona incredibly classy from oshaa there after the goal went in I like to see that from her as a former teammate in these players but again this comes from the Press it's Rachel Hill stepping she presses there she goes to cut off the right side forcing it back centrally and oshaa does exactly what she needs to do she comes to her right as well but I love how Rachel Hill dictates play it makes it predictable as oshaa steps in in a really Cal finish you wonder how many times she saw that exact build out from the back on the training ground and knew exactly which path to jump in front of she hesitated to show even the tiniest bit of emotion what you expect at this level any player who was at a club for as long as she was and did as much as she did to show that respect even though they're not on the road at Barcelona it's typical of a player of that stature in a game like this to show that respect and nice to see it from osala and that might not be the only time she has to exhibit that restraint tonight she's been active in the first 18 minutes finally gets her goal she really has and I think you're right I think she's showing the respect I also think she knows that Barcelona has some tricks up their sleeves as well so maybe not do too much early on in this game on top of showing the respect of a club that treated her well for so long Tess B running out ahead and Rachel Hill [Music] pz bro they up one now it's [Music] kundi the 29-year-old with three goals and an assist this season again signed through 2026 now with the AFC after departing Barcelona [Music] hold through up the center for p c off by MZ and do CER goes for goal anyway and Roland has it well I think it's become very clear in the first 19 minutes that poror is looking to go in behind any time that BFC is in possession and they lose it there's an immediate direct ball into her feet do camper does a good job of forcing mingas to come over to her right and covering on the inside that one not testing Roland but that's something that maybe in the defensive structure that BFC can kind of figure out a little bit because she looks incredibly dangerous when running in [Music] behind Shala again three goals and one assist that I mentioned you maybe expected a little bit more in her first season in nwsl but I don't know that you can pin that on her and enely as AFC have tried to grow through this season and you've had karanji who's missed some time and they haven't really found the proper running mate alongside them hail comes in has made nine appearances now so it's been a little bit of growing pains but you've seen Time After Time the moments there for o Shala where okay the Breakthrough is coming and once it clicks for this team it's going to click in a big way yeah Joe you make a good point on that because she's had some really great opportunities she has gotten those goals but this is an attack that's still figuring itself out how many different peop are people are scoring goals and like what that attack looks like if you parallel it to like a shingo with Kansas City current there's a lot of other goal scorers like to say the least with Orlando Pride even with barbar Banda up top you know that's a leading goal scorer in the league um there's a lot of other players that come up with goals as well and so now K denji starting to get in on it she's starting to heat up and so I think that's going to help the attack even of oshaa when there's other players that are really stepping up in those moments it's also maybe a testament to those who aren't fully aware n USL is deep and very difficult to come into and have success maybe a few years ago if you would have had the top scorer of Barcelona dropped into nwsl and there were only three goals that going assist you scratch your head nowadays that's about part for the course with how deep and talented the league is most competitive league in the world through and through Shona trying to level things roll all the way through and off the post it in from the edge of the area ke Nazareth almost felt like it was unfolding in slow motion everybody turning to watch off the posted in a knowing nod there for Matty Maro and we're level at one yeah it was a little bit strange how it happened because hon kind of took a double step and slowed down and then it went past the outstretched leg of Kiki picket almost was able to get it Maro just a turnover there in transition instead of playing it back into Ming's feet she does recover but Hansen slows it down right there it looks like pck was going to be able to get a touch on it Nazareth has pinpoint Precision but it's the 1 V One play of Hansen that sets up this [Music] goal just beyond out stretch leg of a couple of wouldbe Defenders for Bay FC as that's got to feel good and just sign with Barcelona beginning of July 21-year-old from Portugal that's a nice way to ende near yourself to your teammates your coaching staff your fans at the [Music] club stumble there on the back end from wo again goes down you can see right there four players five players and if you count all shaala six players stepping up in that corner of the field that's a lot of pressure to have to deal with she is picking a wad of grass out of her boots right now keep an eye on that those studs might have to be changed at [Music] halftime Roo been with Barcelona since 2021 limited to just seven appearances this past La Liga season but had five goals and two assists in those seven matches Corner conceded here sh and Lee she's playing in the left back position so those five goals right like her position playing a little bit further back she's played up top some as well it just shows The Interchange we've seen her get forward some already in this game as well as she can do it on both thing of being punished for not being all the way up to speed on what needed to be done and that's why they are right there on the outside of the playoffs looking at only one point separating them yards away from goal but nazer just very calm and composed on the finish and good players will make you pay for just that little extra yard you may give them now Nazareth again bringing it ahead finds roll full three k for Barcelona we saw there too a Rao's higher than Nazareth and a lot of that is because Barcelona builds out of a three-back system so they get Rao high they get Nazareth inside that could be really hard to defend in those wide spaces because you have a numbers up situation where the captain's armed man standing over this one the 29-year-old from SOS to Spain he's been with Barcelona now from nearly a decade started her career with espanol then Atletico Madrid Barcelona since 2017 over 200 appearances in all competitions with this club three standing over this free kick [Music] now two run over it it's left for Hansen who delivers it lead from a distance here and it was dipping it seemed like it had a chance from Alba Canó but it slices wide in the end there was no hesitation on that I I wondered if she was going to fake that and bring it down and I don't think there was one moment's hesitation on this when this pops out kanyo goes I'm going straight for this and it was starting to dip down towards that upper corner the only slight hesitation there was when she had a teammate run across and wanted to make sure that she didn't whack her teammate in the process I don't even know if she thought about that but you're right the teammate sure did because she was trying to get across as quickly as possible sure and Le patience again from Barcelona it's inside for KIRO Walsh slipping it through brilliant ball from Walsh saved by Roland out for a [Music] corner and these are moments where the back line has to stay connected together it's playing off the backside shoulder it's hands said getting a touch on it but those little slip passes are because the distances are too far between the back line of BFC so do ker sliding over obviously this is their first game with the team you're getting those units together but Barcelona will find those gaps and try to exploit [Music] them around rolling ripped in Roland tracking it back post it's headed brilliant ball from Nazareth Just a Touch ahead frino Roo was switched over to that right side now collides with Roland but everybody gets up and gets away from it and that's a brilliant ball from Nazareth right there just great vision and that's the Collision right at the end so protecting Roland in this one but there's barely a gap there poror does let it go through in that moment but it's a great ball from the midfielder W might want to ask if she can get a boot change in this half because you saw again there on the replay her right boot just gave out from under her that's a few times now that she has been slipping and sliding and typically Casey I feel like whenever we see that it's maybe something affecting everybody but through 29 minutes I think she's the only one that you and I have noticed slipping so might just be in case where she needs to make a change the last thing you want in front of like this before the season anybody getting hurt as well in a case like that so hopefully kid manager is maybe be running to get a new pair as we speak [Music] Maro AFC looking to retake the lead oh Shala couldn't get a touch on it Rachel Hill could but it's wide [Music] another dangerous play out of the back OA almost for a second time from a fun again the backup goalkeeper for Barcelona you wonder if she's just not reading things well at the moment in the buildup or what's going on well it's it's three against three right here and For Better or Worse she's trying to play out of trust from Midfield but there you've got to skip a line it can still be skipped under control Shala just doesn't neck well on this having to come from the side but they's still possession with playing maybe 10 yards further than that because right now with the way that BFC is pressing that's not the right option in that moment because there's a player right matched up on the midfielder there's always the option as well and some more old school goalkeepers will say you kick that thing as far and hard as you can but not necessarily anymore in today's [Music] game Dr back for Jonna Fernandez 22-year-old from Barcelona seven starts this past season in La Liga three caps for Spain now goals for Norway car Walsh slowed down the pace a bit Nowa more methodical after they found the equalizing goal prior to that that back and forth we were going track meet style and they have been able to establish a little bit more possession where they're really only having trouble is in they're defending final third trying to build out because BFC is committing so many numbers forward so I would say if your BFC continue to do that when you have moments to do it because when Barcelona does get higher up the field they're proving to be very dangerous with their penetrating passes behind the back line the top again to b t b brings it down save made rebound kundan makes it to 21 BFC and just like that it's methodical in possession for Barcelona but it's a turnover a change of point a direct ball and then this rebound for the goal is really good from BFC I love this ball from daco that's Tess B your 10 getting forward a great first touch plays it across frame that's what you want your player to do if they can't get a lot of power on it just make the keeper make a save and that's she does TOA right there two players running forward and it's kudagi who's able to put it in frustrating thing for Funk when she looks back at it she doesn't know this in the moment we do with the benefit of all these angles that was going wide it appeared would have been a goal kick maybe a corner if there was a deflection but she ended up putting it right into the path of kund dangi either way goal kick corner kick would have been a better result than what transpired and that's the last touch of the ball for kangi in the nature of the friendly we've got a couple of Subs happening early here Dana castanos will replace kangi and Caroline kti will replace Rachel Hill so ki's last touch leaves her smiling as she comes off the field it's 2-1 BFC I don't think you can ride it up better for K denji there a little Curtain Call go out get a little bit of rest but I do think you're right pick of course but big signing after big signing they've really made some splashes AFC they really have and and those players have come and delivered Central Le toward poror it's Shala karanji castanos now going out and training for do keer they've gotone big game hunting and they've landed a few big acquisitions they've shown this ownership group that they are willing to spend and do what they have to do to produce a winner quickly this one Shi through nice work from Barcelona off the hand of rolling it in Caroline Hansen ties the game I don't think you're going to see a better pass than this okay it's a great goal from Hanson makes it really difficult but when you're that slows it can be hard for a goalkeeper to make a save on that one but look at this pass it's great buildup everything good has been coming through Hansen side he gets into Nazareth and she Clips it over the outstretched foot right there if she doesn't clip that in the air and get a little bit of air underneath that that ball does not get in behind and what it does is mingz can't rotate out because there's not a lot of pace on it and so it's going away from goal so it's just a great buildup goal against Barcelona and a third place match in the 2021 women's International Champions Cup Kansas City played Atletico Madrid just 10 days ago 1 nil Victory so we're getting our fair share of goals here in just the third meeting between nwsl and Spain and for Barcelona they've really been able to work off each other Nazareth gets the first goal from Hansen now Hansen gets a goal from Nazareth that's a good combination that Barcelona is see seeing I'm sure Romeo is excited to see that and a lot has come down that right side with her in the One V one and taking on it's really those slip balls in behind that have been the downfall so far for BFC to finish up that note about some of the international games if you expand it just beyond Spain those three matches this is the 13th match this month between an nwsl side and a foreign Club you had the summer cup of course with the Liga M's teams among some other friendlies as I mentioned Kansas City against Atletico Madrid another chance bre here for Barcelona and it's just wide from hav payor and I think that builds the league it builds the nwsl because you're seeing so many different snapshots of different styles of play it's a much bigger world out there right no matter how successful the league has been and it's it's very successful right now it just allows you to see something a little bit different so you can bring those nuances into your game and test your players and that's good and you had a chance to be there in person in Kansas City for some of those matches between nwsl teams and international opponents yeah it was it was exciting you had in at Kobe from Japan with Kansas City current you had mamalode Sundowns from South Africa and then like you mentioned Atletico Madrid and every single game provided a different type of matchup a different approach to the game and just globally that allows the entire women's game to grow I had a chance a couple years ago similarly in the women's cup it was at that time aside from the nwl teams you had AC Milan come in you had Tokyo Verity come in from Japan and you had Club America come in from Liga mchis and right off the bat there Mexico Japan Italy you think about the game on the international level World Cups Olympics and how differently those three countries play stylistically coupled with nwsl teams and you get a little bit of everything and it just makes for something special to watch overlap coming here from Fernandez instead delivered the other way rall on the back end Nasco flicks it away out for a corner we've got four goals in this first half and we haven't even seen perhaps what we'll see in the second half some of the big guns or the biggest of the guns for Barcelona with Anan bonmati and Alexia putas available Off the Bench the last three bondor trophies on the women's side have gotten to those two players putas in 2021 and 2022 on mati in 2023 per Romeo has all those options at his disposal whatever he was nice right and then you got Nazareth who you just brought in who's got a goal and an assist so I think they're pretty happy right now with with what they're seeing and the ability to bring them in now from the corner they'd be happier with a lead Roland has this [Music] snatched it's just been amazing to see Spain grow on the women's side we know the success they've had of course on the men's side as a World Cup winner back in 2010 and that was part of three straight trophies they won with the World Cup sandwich between euro 08 and Euro 2012 and took a little bit of time for it to catch up on the women's side but Casey you look up and down at the U7 level the u20 level at the World Cups Spain has been their one finals or been in finals and of course they win the World Cup in 23 Olympics they look good again and it's just they have risen to a global power now where it used to be the US and then Brazil would pop up and Japan would pop up and Sweden would pop up as well but Spain is here to stay and they're pumping out Talent from from The Young levels on upward I mean look at Barcelona's roster today you've got teenage Spanish stars who who are there who have made Senior Caps or starred for the u7s or the u20s we could see or have seen already today so much talent well and one of the things when I was coaching with us soccer in the youth national teams we would see the u7s and the u6s and the u2s you started seeing the youth success at the global level even before you started seeing the senior women's team success you knew it was there they were great players but they hadn't put it all together and then you started going uhoh you saw all these youth teams me you're like these players are going to be coming through and now we're seeing it like you said at the senior level it's just amazing to watch and how they've really grown over the last years and bu Marti at the center of all of that of course B Marti Now 26 even when we see her later you go back to that 2019 World Cup even right last time that the US won and you were starting to look on the rer that was I think the World Cup that put a lot of fans in the US on notice that the rest of the world had caught up as this was played down the right side for poror Barcelona looks to get things going again here before halftime Hansen patient Hansen whips it through Roland has it that was the World Cup where I think the the radar went up and if you go back to that World Cup right Bon ma a 21-year-old and you can see going forward that ton was going to be there now at 26 she's a year removed from a World's comp of bondor it's only going to get richer from there right and like you said she's 26 which still is not of an old age by any means but you've got now other 21 and 20 year olds that are looking to her and that are coming up that you know maybe she didn't have that as much it wasn't as established when she was coming through so now there's just this system in place where so many players are getting developed at younger ages and coming through and the success of Liga f as well and just having more teams that are successful that helps them grow domestically started to take control back of the possession after they found that equalizer that's been a theme here after each equalizer they scored they steadied the ship and took control of the possession in the aftermath it's been bayc trying to punch back on a quick counter the way they did when they took that 2-1 lead well the one difference that's happened is Tess bod has come out on this right side when castanos came in who takes in a more natural attacking Midfield role but I liked how bod was Central on the goal that they scored in her runs into the forward line kind of unbalanced the back line of marcelona we're not seeing that as much right now but when different Personnel comes in they just can kind of play a little different stylistically bod was maybe one of The Unsung gems that BFC brought in when they constructed this roster 4-year-old from Colorado OD went to Duke started her career at North Carolina courage and of all the players that shaas lost this past off season be it free agency or to the expansion draft he lamented the most about Tess B he was so high on her last season as she really broke out for North Carolina after she was a draft pick of Gotham back in 2021 she returned the Duke for her final Collegiate season then joined North Carolina that was the one he was sad to see go and we've seen why after what she's done with BFC this season well it's the relationship she had with carolene as well she played a little bit more of the false nine would come in between the Midfield and the defensive line a little more back to goal she's in a more natural attacking Midfield position with BFC but then you had carolene who would penetrate in behind it was a really good relationship and carolene gets hurt you know now she's back and playing but um and then you lose tbod that's a big loss for the attack of the North Carolina courage and BFC is has really been the recipient of a really good player so far in 2024 dying moments of this first half coming up at the half to take a look around nwsl with the standings and the schedule take a look at Savvy King again at the u20 World Cup for the United States [Music] [Music] well read by dasco dasco looking for OAA flag stays down osala looking over her shoulder osala cuts it back inside still osala plays it across save made by je font denying a really good opportunity for the substitute Caroline KY and we're still level at two really unselfish there for mosala in that moment I think wanted to go to her right foot decides to cut it back but then Barcelona creates a 2v2 and but a good opportunity there in transition for International Friendly here at the end of August Bay again will have a match coming up this Friday in nwsl on the road against Portland Barcelona gearing up to begin its season I think what's been interesting is it has been some in to in but even when there's been possession by each team it's only been in their attacking half so it's provided a lot of opportunities going forward which has been fun to watch and there is the whistle to end half number one four goal split right down the middle to a piece oh Shala got us going with the opening goal Barcelona and this is an opportunity for BFC to get some new players in and get some experience and we're underway in half number two the four changes the four new players I should say on the Barcelona side we have mon toron cloria Pina Vicki Lopez and Es Brooks coming [Music] in remember in the first half we did see Dana castanos replace Rachel kangi and Caroline kti replace Rachel Hill we're seeing Jen Bey come on for Abby doer on that back line saw her take the captain's arm band as well Bey she'll have some familiarity with the opponent Bey time that she spent 10 years total at Arsenal over a couple of stints also a few years in France and a few years with Manchester City over 140 caps for Scotland retired from International play in 2023 this one cut out by Maro he's got over to the right side now Joel Anderson is slotted season so less changes Still not needing to play necessarily 90 minutes but less changes and so they can really start to solidify things Katherine pson also comes on for bayc who was signed as a national team replacement player [Music] sort of what we expected here for Bay coming in as soon as you and I saw the starting 11 that it was a representative starting 11 for Bay first of all it was nice to see second of all it was a case where we knew they'd probably be coming off at some point as pre-plan Subs when you have a regular season game on Friday one of two things was going to happen as Barcelona is going forward again here it's deflected by Bey you either going to start them all and then bring them off at halftime or you were going to start the unit that's out there now and bring on your starters for the last half hour one of the other was going to happen the starters out there from the jump and one thing you gain from that is not just you know having those players play together but having them start a game and that that's important if those are going to be your players you're going with how do you start a game how do you get everything going play through centrally and it's just wide we've seen a few opportunities for AA poror who's been L down preseason I hopes for what she could be for Barcelona after all her success in Germany the Polish International but another one got by the wayside and it's more of what we saw in the first half it's Hansen down this right side the ball in behind the back line Brewster a little bit caught too high and also risky going across the goal there cuz that could have deflected onto frame it doesn't but again it's Hansen in the 1v1 just incredibly gifted on the ball but she really dictates a lot of the attack for Barcelona just to put a bow on all the subs for Bay OB see we referen it's a full line change from the team that started the match aside from matd Maro who's still out there now it's Emmy Allen and goal on the back line you've got Alysa malonson Jordan Brewster Jen Bey Matty Maro in the Midfield you've got Jamie Shepard Maya DS Katherine pson Caroline KY Dana casianos and Joel Anderson [Music] [Music] [Music] played through brilliant ball from Anderson on this right side space the in up play across for kti just behind her and the flag does come up now and kti did appear to be ahead of pson in that moment it was the first touch that let pson down but a great ball from Joel Anderson to springing her off that right side it kind of caught Barcelona a little bit off guard but right there just ahead of the player and ahead of the ball in that moment as the outside back was shifted forward for [Music] Barcelona and not only a lot of personnel changes for Bay FC but they are playing with a little bit more of two attacking midfielders and one holding mid which is a little different from the first half Dorian Bailey did slide up in that role some with testb but not as clear as we just saw with [Music] B asby Brooks who's come on now the 21-year-old from the Netherlands for Barcelona joined the club last season in her first year with the club made 27 appearances with 19 starts in La Liga had seven goals and six assists just down here on the near sideline number 19 so as we showed you in the first half the graphic of the players who have Departed they've not only replaced it with new faces this year but they were also gearing up for some players to leave last year already Barcelona and brought in players like Brooks who's on the ball now started to retool before The Exodus happened when you have that much talent you know at some point it's going to leave go elsewhere and you have to be ready for the next wave they've sort of bridged that Gap well about as well as you can I would say you are undefeated in La Liga play you win champions league and now you have to re tool it's three out of four Champions Leagues it's five straight La Liga titles they know a thing or two about retooling on the fight well and it's it's one thing to win year after year which is already so hard but to win in the fashion they do with no one really close to them especially in Liga F and you know having a 15 Point separation from the second place team that's incredibly impressive and and like you said to have to do that year after year when you're the game that's circled on everyone's calendar you're the team that everyone's coming for in your leagues and even going into Champions League that is not easy to especially when you're having to replace players you mentioned the Gap that Barcelona had from the next best team when you talk about BFC right now battling for a playoff spot in nwsl it brings up the interesting hypothetical of weighing nwsl versus the global game if you take Barcelona and you drop them into nwsl where do they finish if you take Bay FC and you drop them into Spain is it something where they just finish second behind Barcelona because you know from top to bottom in WSL is maybe the most competitive even though place like Spain or Italy or France or England might be more topheavy it's it's such an interesting hypothetical and I guess all we can really look to that is the Champions League where then you of course have the best of the best throughout Europe in Champions League but it's just such an interesting conversation because the game is so different abroad than it is in nwsl where you have a Utah who are bottom of the batt right now and they beat BMC the other night and you know what if they stream together two or three wins it's more than they've had all season but they'd be in the playoff race themselves Utah where there's so much parody it's just an interesting hypothetical that we'll probably never have an answer to but we could think about it in friendlies like this yeah and I think I think with the nwsl too it's so hard um but what you see every year is how tight the table is and I think that's sometimes what we don't see at in all domestic leagues around the world and so that's something really that is special to the nwsl for sure um but I don't think we'll ever know because not all these players are playing full minutes and full starting 11s and these international friendlies necessarily into of the area it's p couldn't get it through from Brooks Claudia Pena able to change her jersey number this year from 6 to n as she looks to be one of the leading players up top 13 goals five assists last season it's three straight Seasons now for panut with double digit goals in think F she had 14 then 10 and this year 13 curled in locked by Bey off the head of poror just feels like a matter of time unless she gets subbed out again the nature of a friendly you don't know how long poror will go but it feels like before the night is up unless she subbed earlier she's going to have a goal tonight and and you might see her play more minutes but they might limit him you never know but I think when you have a player like her who has scored in three straight preseason games and you're getting very close to starting your season you want to keep that going with your top goal score for the for 2024 so far in that preseason and she is that player hasn't gotten one tonight but she was incredibly dangerous early on with a few of those balls in behind the back [Music] line well righted out of the Midfield by Maya dos a elate foul called against dos seem like she nearly cleanly had it going to attack the other way for Bay and after all that delayed FAL call against her [Music] [Music] for goal here is deflected it it'll be out for a corner [Music] there's Emmy Allen get in her rookie nwsl [Music] season leader through and through in her time at UNC very vocal out of the back and she came into that program not necessarily expecting to play right away and really earned her position and grew throughout her four years there so it's good to see her in the league and starting to get a little bit of experience I mean playing against Barcelona is No Easy Task all right this time last year she was gearing up to play [Music] Arkansas here is Pina again six caps now for Spain for the 23-year-old it's amazing you look up and down the roster for Barcelona aside from the players who are not from Spain of course but the players who are from Spain being at the Youth Level or at the senior level plenty of international experience and in a way it's really mirrored what the men's side built for so long we talked about it in the first half those teams of 2008 to 2012 winning two Euros in a World Cup on the men's side for Spain the heart of that roster a couple of Real Madrid players but the vast majority all from Barcelona so it's interesting to see now as the women's game has grown that Barcelona is once again the supplier of basically the entirety of a national team that just won the World Cup in 2023 and the Youth System there beneath it and so much of that could be credited to the Youth System like you bring up and the academy product that Barcelona does have and how they work with their Academy products and and even the head coach here tonight worked on the boys side as well through the academy program they put a lot of investment into that now that investment is coming into the women's side as well and that is huge because it just allows you a pipeline to come up through the system there's P Romeo who's in his first season now as the head coach after serving as an assistant Andre heraldez now the head coach of Washington Spirit In nwsl The Architects of a lot of trophies for Barcelona in recent years ganos looks long it's brought down by malanson Melissa meanon plays it through flag stays down in behind now for pson team replacement player getting a chance here tonight at the hour mark it's Bay and Barcelona all tied up at two loaded in toward kti head It Away by toon this is better for BFC after Barcelona's controlled much of this half so far loaded in again cleared Again by [Music] toon it's just a bit of a different look from Bay FC in the first half you have oshaa really looking to penetrate behind the back line along with cinan and Hill very Pacey front line now you've got Dana castanos who's a little bit more of a natural tin attacking midfielder trying to play and come back um as Barcelona looks to try to get in behind quickly through Hansen they deal with it quite well there but we're starting to see something a little different where Barcelona's pressing more because they're not playing quite as direct BFC [Music] and Away out of the back Beady couldn't find it played centrally here scrambling at the back of AFC Pina tries to weave her way through taken by Maya [Music] dams seemed for a moment like ba was trying to look like Barcelona did playing out of the back there but similarly to Barcelona in the first half struggled playing out of the back let's not forget the way that first goal was given away to oala and how nearly a couple of others were as well yeah there were definitely some moments right there that they could have been pickpocketed in their final third they figure it out but Barcelona is definitely playing a little bit more on the front foot in the second [Music] half half horned volley there from toon awkward body positioning but trying to slice it with the outside of the boot [Music] [Music] handful of changes coming now for Barcelona that should see the insertion of Alexia payas and Bon Marti the last three bandor titles on the women's side we've seen messy plenty on the men's side but the last three on the women's side will be entering the field in this next substitution window for Barcelona B mati in 2023 putas in 21 and 22 two and they might be coming in to a lead Hansen it gives it back through the middle save made by Allan rebound to poror and it's deflected Brooks turning going for goal and saved Again by Allen oh she just snatches it no need for a rebound or conceding a corner parrying it over just grabbed that thing it's an impressive run from pyor very unselfish but from both players right here it's that touch that really lets her down it gives Emy Allen a chance she comes up big but this one from Lopez looks like it might might dip over the top and you're right great hands from Allen in that moment but byor just having a little bit of trouble with that Final Touch he looked a little frustrated after that but what was so impressive okay the ball into her from Midfield to Spring her was impressive but it's her movement to go opposite of where the players are for Bay FC it seems simple but it's incredibly hard as a forward to find those gaps [Music] the five changes being prepared for Barcelona [Music] [Music] [Music] play through again for panson does enough Allan slips it was a pass back so she couldn't pick it up after all of thaton does really well in that moment she just has to get something on it because again it's those little slip balls in behind the back line they were really really dangerous in the first half and they're proving to be the same here in the second [Music] half there's Hansen slips it through for pina going for goal and again snatched up by Allen what's making it so difficult is Pina and Lopez pinch centrally Lopez is the attacking mid but pea plays off the left and it's hard for the back line to know which player to go with and that's why pyor is becoming open more and more and more is because of the movement of Pina [Music] inside well the change is coming for Barcelona the only two players who will remain on the field who started the match or GMA F the goalkeeper and AA payor who's still looking for that goal and had ample opportunity the other nine will all be different faces and slip through again for a [Music] corner oh we have a chance here before the subs are made the name's coming on Emilia simchak Alexia payas patri giaro itana bonmati and Ona B those are the five coming on four of them the World Cup and Olympics with Spain and then Sim the 18-year-old already three caps at the senior level for Poland so this is really an a group quote unquote coming in for Barcelona you typically see as a starting group but it makes sense coming in for the final 20 25 minutes and it's deflected in off the corner not sure if Brook's got a piece of it or if it's direct from the corner we have to take a closer look here anyway you slice it there not sure right now as they're having a conversation but it's 3-2 Barcelona I'll be honest I don't think they care Brooks looked like they they were going to give her credit but look the run to the near post creates a lot of problems for your opposition and you put the ball into a dangerous area sometimes good things happen and that's what Leon does right here Brooks I don't think gets a touch on it it goes off the BFC Defender I think it's mson right there just goes in past there but it's a tough ball going into that near post area well they can argue over it but the end result is going to be own go go getting the tally frustration you can see from Emmy Allen the near post wasn't defended properly and that will give Barcelona this 3-2 lead as they make these wholesale [Music] changes for now the credit goes toon who took the corner she does come off now replaced by ailia simchak and it's BAS Haro Bon mati and bti coming in all the players through and through who have come off for Barcelona N9 of the 11 only demma Fon goal and Eva poror up top still in and here is Bon mati reigning bondor winner I think it's expected to get this these type of minutes for those players coming off an Olympics run coming into preseason like you have to find ways to manage them but still keep them in form and not overplaying them as you're going into a very long season as well but certainly great for the BFC players to be able to play some of those players that have just come back to the [Music] Olympics cleared out to Safety in the end from toon good hustle instead actually for bigy Lopez to keep it in MA her first touches on the ball hear it from the crowd as she gets going [Music] over the shoulder poas out ahead for bonmati it slipped through looking for poror pina has it payas with her putas tries to chip it back through that was nearly EX exactly what Barcelona needed it was Pon MTI for poror who was still looking for that goal had ample opportunity without one though in the 70th minute but for how much longer dinina goes at it herself here and it's just wide and what they're really doing is overloading centrally there's five players right in the top of the penalty area playing almost like in a 5v2 5v3 fashion but P I love her movement off the ball and we'll see this last one from Pina trying to curl it into the back post and just wide Tak that prep touch and gets it out but from poror I think it's just that Final Touch when she gets it to set herself up for the Finish it's just been a little bit off whether that's the movement in conjunction with their teammates the ball that's played in or the first touch but that's just one thing that you know can come together and she'll probably have a better opportunity on [Music] FR see more and more of putas on the ball no doubt wearing the number 11 for Barcelona the Alor femine just began in 2018 she became the first two-time winner of that award in 21 and 22 at age 26 winning her first bandor May going to give d a run in the total bondor Department [Music] here's Bon mati Pina in the area now Barcelona on mati [Music] putas Center let through it's Bon mati pulling it back Bon mati has it blocked now Barcelona looks like themselves having some fun here just a matter of time it feels before the fourth one's knocked home yeah and if it wasn't for Jordan Brewster in that moment defensively and she does really well to shut down B mati in that moment but this ball first time is really what helps the attack because it finds Bon mati's feet poror leaves it right here Brewster comes back across for the block another chance here as it f through the six-yard box by the way Salma Paro who we won't see tonight was not listed on the bench for Barcelona the 20-year-old came in third in the bondor voting this past year so they might have another future bandor winner in their own ranks beside Bas and bonmati it's slip through for bonmati it's gathered by Allan well it's those opposite passes that are so good and we're starting to see really the creativity that comes with the Barcelona attack with all of these players going into it and we saw it in the first half but you can just see the sophistication between these players it's a real challenge for BFC and so far they're hanging in there only giving up that corner kick goal but you can just see how Barcelona is so comfortable in the attacking final third they treat it like the rest of the field and that's really what separates them they just look like they're having fun in possession and it's Bon mati going again Bon mati thought about going for goal puts the head down now takes up the space mon mati lays it off giar drives it being a friendly we don't have an official possession stat but Casey in this second half it's a lot too a little it's been a lot of Barcelona on the ball and a lot of bay just waiting for any little bread crumb of the ball of their feet they just really haven't made any mistakes in possession and I also think that bay FC in the second half hasn't been able to press as high they just have different personalities out on the field they aren't pressing as much but it's kind of the chicken or the egg thing is it the possession so good that they're not not able to press or is the pressing not as efficient as the first half and I think you know that's left up to opinion but now with these players coming in off the bench that have all that experience it's difficult also important to note though still that it's only two regular starters out there now for Bay going up against the basically Barcelona a team so that is maybe a third option beside the chicken or the egg in yeah there you go we can give a third option earlier than that with kangi and Hill coming off in the 30th minute at that point when kangi and Hill came off it was 2-1 with BFC in the lead so maybe a bit of a spark that could be going into their game against Portland on the road on Friday and not only getting the goals but just the way in which they were playing the way in which they were possessing committing numbers forward I mean and doing against a team maybe it wasn't all the number one players of Barcelona but it was still a very good team out there and a lot of the starters as well so that really can propel them forward and the one thing that Barcelona did though that was so hard is they always responded quickly with the goal and that's something perhaps that BFC can take a look at as well and after that game against Portland then they have Louisville at home and this BFC team again one point away from that playoff line all you have to do is get in Casey you know this 2009 in WPS with sky blue you're the last seed into the playoffs you're at a off three wins you win the title so you know that all you got to do is get in and go on a run you just got to go on a run everything's against you just make it happen no one thinks you're going to do it right but no it can definitely happen and um and they don't even need to win every single game it's going to be hard to do that right they're not in a playoff format right now it's figuring out the games that matter the most like you said where they're close in the stand focus on those games if you get results here's malanson now with speed in space malanson centers just beyond castanos a little bit less on the ball one quicker step from castanos either way and it's probably a 3-3 I love this from malonson though she has so much speed it's a great first touch I pushing that first keeper whether it's in training and then always being prepared to come into game so this is really good for her experience and just being more played [Music] in once Savvy King returns from the u20 World Cup if they have to use Emmy Allen and something would happen to Caitlyn Roland there's some familiarity there of course those two on the back line with the tar Hills the last couple of [Music] years closing minutes here as we tick toward the 90 after four goals in the first half second half for a while maybe seemed to be doomed just because of the lack of Rhythm with been on the Barcelona side few big saves from Emmy Allen and this is what happens when you have so much possession it really forces BFC into a very low block and in compact but Barcelona does really cuz you have natural cover and just no one steps hard enough on it it's an unfortunate finale here for Bay especially in this second half with this fully rotated substitute unit coming in and holding a mostly a unit for Barcelona to just the one quirky goal from the corner but two probably well-deserved goals for Barcelona addictionally in the end I think so too and and I do think BFC will be disappointed because it was a much closer game than that with giving up these two goals in the last two minutes that's disappointing for them and they'll they'll definitely have to learn from that piece but for vast portions of the game Barcelona just held possession and you fatigue when that happens and then you can give up goals in that way once you fatigue and you haven't had much of the ball and there is the final whistle this International Friendly between Bay FC and FC Barcelona comes to an end and it is the champions of Spain the champions of Europe a [Music]
