Oklahoma starting off their season with an absolute bang against Temple final score Oklahoma 51 Temple three there's going to be a lot of people now after this game saying yeah well that was temple in a lot of ways trying to invalidate the good things you saw if you're an Oklahoma Sooner fan I'm just telling you now what they're saying isn't untrue that it was in fact temple on the other sideline however I don't think that is licensed to just discredit all the good things that happened last night Brent venol said as much in his postam press conference when he was talking about the defense we'll unpack all of this and unpack what we can take away from Oklahoma's domination last night before we do that though make sure you're subscribed right here to the on three YouTube channel Oklahoma fans y'all have been rolling with us on this show the hard count I mean since we were doing this show in a Lobby in Waco Texas so we appreciate y'all being a part of this again if you haven't yet subscribed no time like the present as college football season also follow me on Instagram and on Twitter JD pel what you saw last night from Jackson Arnold in an effort where he went 17 for 25 141 yards four touchdowns with four drops so that number could have been 21 for 25 neither here nor there you saw why he's your quarterback and that's not me by any stretch the imagination throwing any shade at Dylan Gabriel because Dylan Gabriel I think will do phenomenal things at Oregon this upcoming season I think a lot of folks in Norman believe that as well but you saw why he couldn't wait another year to be the guy in Norman Oklahoma why that was not going to be advantageous for anybody for him to be sitting on the bench for another season and what you saw last night going back to what we just said about the level of competition doesn't really concern me all that much when we tried to assess Oklahoma he did things that it didn't matter if it was Temple or if it was Alabama or whatever like you saw things that are going to translate throughout the course of the season one of the things that really encouraged me based on what I believe Oklahoma has on this roster is his ability to throw on the run his ability to add lib move outside the pocket I mean heck run the football when it was asked of him this dude's a good athlete I think a lot better athlete than maybe the college football public was aware of that's going to factor in in a massive way throughout the course of this season second level of defenses when he breaks contain you have to honor the fact that he might tuck it and run and when you do that Deon Burks gets open so on and so forth throughout that cast of characters uh for the Oklahoma wide receiver room so that was one thing that was encouraging again I think that will translate the other thing that I saw from Jackson Arnold his ability to put touch on the football they they call it layering the football football he could he could throw it over a linebacker to the tight end like he did to Bower sharp on that touchdown um he was able to drive it downfield he was able to throw what they would call like the one football where you throw a line drive kind of pass had great touch on his deep passes all I'm trying to say here is Jackson Arnold that's something that I think uh to me at least when I'm wa I'm not a scout but when I'm watching quarterbacks at the Collegiate level like the ability to lay your passes and have some touch have some Nuance there in a lot of ways that kind of separates like the the great from the elite I think Jackson Arnold has a whole lot of elite to him here's the other thing too remember all the things that were said at about Jackson Arnold after that bull game last year oh well Oklahoma do they really have a quarterback Oklahoma it's too bad that this that and the other like all these things were just immediately put on Jackson Arnold and labeling him for what he was going to be throughout the course of his career in Norman Oklahoma based on a bowl game we said it a lot we said do not fall victim to blll syndrome this is a really good quarterback you saw flashes it was his first time really being the guy for Oklahoma like let's all just take a deep breath here in this game totally cleaned up the mistakes again I understand it was Temple but still made a lot of good decisions threw the football away when it was time to uh wasn't late on a lot of the throws that you can't be laid on like from what I saw from Jackson Arnold we saw the difference and offseason makes with him having the keys to the offense okay so I'm not telling you there won't still be growing pains his first year as a starter but I do think that we need to re set again and say okay the bll game was the bll game but we've seen progress last night I think was a tremendous data point of progress and he's going to be I think really good for them not just this season but throughout the course of his career in Norman Oklahoma to me that was never really the question also Dion Burks three catches or excuse me six catches three of them for touchdowns rather 36 yards not worried about the total yards number I'm sure he will have games where he's well over 100 throughout the course of this season depending on what they ask of him he to me is your answer answer when you need Elite at the skill positions cuz they have a lot of really really good players and I think a lot of them have a chance to be elite like Nick Anderson you didn't see him last night when he gets back on the field he's going to be a dude for you I think Android Anthony has a lot of juice to him he's a guy that can really level up and be a guy for them but what you saw last night from Dion Burks that's going to translate again I know it was Temple that's going to translate in the SEC and Dion Burks is now coming from Purdue so in the Big 10 like he he's not a guy that you know without a shadow of Doubt you've seen against SEC competition you know what he brings to the table like some of it it's hard to put super articulately into words it's hard to quantify exactly but like you you're not covering him one on one when he gets the football he's making something positive happen and it's very obvious now in this offense for Oklahoma they're going to force feed him the football whether it's the short game whether it's the push in vertical whether it's in them in the slot whether they're handing off to whatever they're doing with the Burks he is going to be a weapon and again I think he adds a lot of elite to that offense and if you want to win at a high level especially in the SEC or college football period you need to have Elite at the skill player positions and Dion Burks without a shadow of a doubt to me is that so one that's exciting because when it comes to those big time matchups when Tennessee comes to town and you got to play them in Norman and that's a I'm imagining going to be a very electric atmosphere I'm imagining college game day will be there in those Big Time moments you have someone you can go to and feel real good about being like the game breaker for you all right Dion Brooks I think is that so that's one part of it you have a game breaker the other part of it the defense knows you got a game breaker too in Dion Burks but the defense watches tape too every single week and they know okay number six he's too good to not commit extra resources to and what I mean by that is you probably have to have bracket coverage for him you have to have somebody underneath and on top of him you got to have you know probably not just man coverage with him you have to make sure that you're giving him the prop amount of attention so when that happens that means that other players on Oklahoma's roster in that wide receiver room will by nature of just arithmetic get less attention and so your heartbreaks for Jalil Farooq having that injury last night sounds like he's uh per Brent venables a six to eight we recovery but Andel Anthony he's back from injury I mentioned him already Nick Anderson I mentioned him already of Brennan Thompson I think is a guy that you could see Elevate throughout the course of this season real deal speed there's a lot of dudes here now to where if you don't give them extra attention they will hurt you and we've already established by nature of this conversation you can't give them extra attention because then you don't give Dion Burks extra attention and then he's scoring touchdowns so the way this is working now we talked about it the lot all offseason the wide receivers for Oklahoma massively underrated Dion Burks I think validated everyone's opinion in Norman Oklahoma last night he's going to explode I believe he's going to receive a lot of postseason accolades I feel that strongly about him he'll be a national name if he's not already uh very exciting night last night validating everything we said around the Oklahoma pass game and around Jackson Arnold and around the receiver room now defensively that was really I think like the the thing that you point to as an Oklahoma fan and say all right all right this is why we hired Brent venol because last night it was very obvious this team played with a Persona that I believe is just specific to who Brent venables is when he's coaching the defensive side of the football whether he's calling the plays or not like like this is who he is all right the personality of the defense was intense it was energy it was Joy they were always around the football they were playing with a great level of passion and like that's something doesn't really show up in the Box Score but you can tell by watching the game broadcast like it's not coincidental that the ball gets tipped up in the air and then someone's right there next to him to intercept it and go north and South with it like it's those things don't just like happen they happen because of how you practice and they happen because of how you actually execute in the game and your execution I believe in large part is due to your effort and your effort is due to your care Factor so all those things combined to say I think this Oklahoma defense is going to be real good we're flying around last night held Temple to less than two yards a carry which again I don't care who you are that's exceptional I don't care who's on the other side of the football two yards a carry in the opener that's real good Force ton of fumbles I mean special teams got got in on the action Oklahoma finished the night forcing six turnovers okay again that's not coincidental some of that's on Temple sure but I think a lot of that should be credited to Oklahoma and just the overall passion and play style they had six sacks nine tackles for a loss they were flying around again to me this is a Brent vanable defense and they play with an edge of a Brent vanable defense that we've come to know throughout his career especially as a defensive coordinator when he was at Clemson now the offensive line is going to be a talking point for us they've been a talking point for us throughout the course of this off season I've said this many times to me they are the difference between Oklahoma being a 10- win team and being a six- win team okay so that I mean that is what it is we're not backing off that ran the football really effectively yesterday did Oklahoma ran for over 200 yards that's a good sign the thing that I think is may be a little bit concerning if you're an Oklahoma fan is you don't like seeing your quarterback get hit you don't like seeing your quarterback get hit especially in week one especially against a team like Temple because you allow three sacks it's it's not getting any easier when you play o or when Oklahoma plays Texas when Oklahoma plays Tennessee it it it doesn't get easier when you play LSU like that's something that has to be cleaned up now at the exact same time it's week one so it's a jumping off point this group hasn't played together so they're getting a chance to jail right now so I'm saying as as frustrating and I think as concerning as last night can be when you look at the offensive line I don't think it's a situation where you say okay that's who they are one game doesn't Define you one game gives you a chance to I think recalibrate and figure some things out but one game doesn't Define you Brent venes also mentioned like yeah we were we were pretty uh pretty vanilla in how we approached things schematically so there could be a few more uh few more bullets in the chamber offensively with how they can get teams off balance and maybe put some uh some of those pass rush issues to uh to bed but at the end of the day for the offensive line again we're going to have to build on this a couple of potential Solutions I could see Oklahoma when they do get a little bit more uh deep in the bag schematically Jackson Arnold I mentioned his athleticism I could very easily see Oklahoma decide to move the pocket a bit more and get him on the perimeter could also see them be a little bit more versatile in the Run game so instead of having to maybe uh block as much as you would you keep them off balance with the RPO game the play action game uh the read option game all those things to just again mellow out the defense so they can't just pin their ears back and have success the passer everything to me last night about Oklahoma about the the skill players about Jackson Arnold about the defense like it all just felt very much so as advertised like I think what we were saying about Oklahoma for the last few months we saw come to fruition in this game really good quarterback we said that a lot really good wide receiver room running back room did their thing as well it was kind of I mean it was a it was a it was a party when it came to running the football last night for Oklahoma offensive line we'll see but there's a lot to work with with here for Oklahoma so you never apologize for Domination in your first game of the season you never apologize if you're Jackson or throwing four touchdowns you never apologize if you're Deon Burks catching three touchdowns you never apologize if you're a defense and as a team overall Oklahoma getting six turnovers again jiren knck getting all the action on special teams man you love to see it so this Oklahoma team now again I think there's a culture of Joy I think there is a alignment when it comes to the just aggression and passion and intensity and to me again we say it a lot Persona of your leadership eventually becomes the of your football team Oklahoma now in year three under Brent venables to me it feels very clear with how they play football this is a Brent fenales coached football team and you love to see that so Oklahoma handling business let me know in the comment section on Instagram and on Twitter JD pel how you feel about the Sooners dub last night hey it's week one of the
