e yeah he's right it's a nice night now it's a really good night for football the torrential rains fell here about an hour and a half before the game but the turf seems to be in great shape I don't think weather is going to be a factor in this one at all these two teams played last season during the middle of the year and part of the M the miners 0 and5 start to the season were down 31-4 against Wayne State at halftime came back only lost the game 3835 so the miners are looking to do what they couldn't do before and get that win here on the road against Wayne State me meanwhile the wild cats are looking to start off the nsic right and start off the season right with a victory well I think the wild cats have a lot here uh first of all you've got nine starters back on each side of the ball were eight three a year ago I think expectations are high and by the way they're picked fourth in this conference but the two teams picked first and second a Minesota duth and AUST they don't play them so they got Minnesota state a couple weeks you got to get by Missouri S&T first tonight you're right that game a year ago Wayne State had that game in the bag at halftime and the miners came back and almost beat them so they got to be ready because this is going to be a fun game this is going to be a wide open ball game I think a lot of points are going to be scored and a lot of it might come gone and that means the itsy bitsy spider is starting to climb back up the water spout we've got Wayne State and Missouri S&T tonight to kickoff 2024 let's talk about both teams the signal callers we'll start with the home Squad Wayne State left by led by senior Nick Bowen who has been the in charge of the Wildcat offense for Four Seasons now he's about to kick off his fourth year yeah four year starter he knows this offense he might as well have written the book he knows it so well he's a dual threat quarterback he can throw he can run he can hurt you in so many different ways and he's so experienced it's up to the guys around him to kind of make plays around him and and I think it's big for for this season and for this game for the running backs and the off to be able to run the ball well and not make Nick bone be the the runner all the time but he's such a a capable player of making big plays special player for Wayne State 22 touchdowns through the air including 12 on the ground he was a force when it came to the Wildcats offense a year ago now we take it to the other side of the field for Missouri s& they're looking for their sophomore quarterback Tyler Joya he took the re in the middle of last season threw for 14 touchdowns along with 10 interceptions a lot of growing pains with the Freshman but he's ready to kick off his sophomore campaign tonight yeah absolutely he had a he really played well down the stretch that's the 10 interceptions that's the big thing if he can limit turnovers they've got a chance to win this ball game tonight a lot of weapons around him as well receivers coming back a wide open offense that they run Joya could be very special in this offense got to limit the turnovers if they're going to stay in the game here tonight not to mention both teams return a lot of St starters Wayne State brings back 18 of their 22 and Missouri s& brings back 16 of their 22 so it's going to be a fun one yeah absolutely absolutely don't go anywhere folks this is going to be a great game kickoff of 2024 between Wayne State and Missouri S&T is coming your way next on news channel Nebraska if you're experiencing balance problems I head coordination problem what sorts of exercises or things do you do with your patients to those symptoms the positional vertigo is the main problem that's learning the repositioning techniques which can be done in the clinic and then I try to tach them those at home too because they can be very useful for the patients at home if they're able to reposition themselves it's just a series of position changes when you're lying in bed and kind of knowing which way to move the head um and then I'll also progress them with ey head coordination exercises um gay stabilization exercises balance exercises all those types of things to help them get back to their normal everyday routine and if this is something that someone hasn't experienced and maybe they're nervous to go approach a doctor about it why should they see their doctor and eventually seek Physical Therapy well if it's limiting their day-to-day routine you know if you wake up with a little bit of dizziness but you get up and it goes away and you can go about your daily routine and you don't have an episode again don't worry about it right but if it's something that you know I can't move I can't I can't walk regularly I have to hang on to the countertops to get by I can't go to work you know if you're limiting with your daily routine especially over the course of you know longer than a day or two I usually tell there in the middle that we'll really want to W watch out for the linebackers today are going to be the big talk for the Missouri S&T with just nijo along with Cameron Sturgill Carson pringer those two two pringer and nijo their leading tacklers from a year ago yeah a lot of experience at that those linebacker spots the ja is a junior and pranker is a senior and they're gonna you know try to create Havoc against that Wayne State offense there's the offense again Tyler Joya starting quarterback along with AJ Harris to transfer from Iowa State he'll be looking to be the load carrier and some good receivers with CJ jarm and CJ Wiggins as we take a look at the Wayne State Squad who is starting for the Wildcats today well we've got the defense on the field Carter sitman Luke l Ambert Kaden Sutton and James Frank supposed to be that front line there but we really want to watch out for the backers Dexter Lawrence preseason nsic player to watch for the wild cats and Alex kowalik injured all of last year but one of the best in the nation yeah I think way stay defensively that they're really good I think in in several areas but the linebacker spot Dexter Larsson is the middle linebacker he was fantastic last year great tackler I believe he had like 90 some tackles Alex kowalik two years ago was over 100 tackles so you've got some tackling machines out there at that line the uh kix's the will linebacker for Wayne State and a lot of experience along that back line in the secondary it should be a pretty good defense here for Wayne State this season and of course on the offensive side of the ball Nick Bowen as the quarterback but you got to look at the running backs for Wayne State Dawson forg he returns he's a junior and one of the the breakouts of last season was freshman now sophomore lat travus Boyd in the back field our starters today are thanks to Medica with the Medica Health Plan you're not just covered you're cared for we're getting ready for kickoff today on news channel Nebraska the rain came the rain went it is no longer here and it is a nice 75 in Wayne America Cloudy Skies a breeze about up to about 14 miles per hour so not too bad we were wondering for a little bit would the would the quarterbacks be able to let Rip but now that the sunshine is out the rain is is really starting to dry looks like we'll see both normal offenses today when I first got here it was looked miserable out there it was raining it was wet it was uncomfortable but now the sun's out and and much much nicer Boston Henley boots it away and 2024 has begun Gideon Neo takes the the kick return all the way up to the 25 yd line and that is where we begin I think for Missouri S&T the most important thing right now is just get off to a good start they trailed 38-4 in the first half against Wayne State Wayne State just absolutely clobbered them in that first half and then Wayne State was well over 300 yards I think almost 400 yards at halftime had like 80 yards in the second half barely moved the ball Missouri S&T scored uh three touchdowns there after falling down uh it was 3814 at one point scored three straight touchdowns and tried an onside kick that Wayne State recovered so for Missouri S&T again get off to a good start here on the road Braden goes in motion and this is the handoff to AJ Harris the transfer from Iowa State who originally committed to Stanford when he was a four-star recruit back in 2022 he ended up moving on to Iowa State and now decided to transfer to Missouri S&T and this is a spot that will use AJ Harris quite a bit they love to run the football ball yeah they're going to they're going to try to spread Wayne State out they'll try to hit him with the quick handoffs right now you see uh basically five wide for the miners Joya alone he'll look to throw after a quick pressure he gets this one out to the sideline out route ran beautifully and caught by Reed Weber for the first down had some pressure but nicely done by Joya to get that throw off quick yeah joyya stayed in the pocket there and delivered a quick pass for the strike and the first down that's going to be again we talked about that that in the pregame for Joy is is to not turn about the uh the football over rather not baseball uh but don't turn it over and and make those quick passes be very accurate here today loaded up on the right side they run it to the left with the option Joya with a big gain across Midfield and a first down for Missouri SNT he doesn't run the ball a lot but when he does he can be very effective yeah maybe he should run the ball a lot that was a was a good fake really uh Wayne State kind of got bit going inside Joya takes it outside on the ball fake and picks up a nice gain into Wayne State territory lot of credit for the left tackle Jake sidel picking up a big tackle here's another option for Joya it's an RPL who will throw it out to the sideline flag is down after the catch was made by Weber he got the first down but a flag flies and we'll see what the call is from the official I'm not sure what the call is here we'll see a few things to keep in mind potentially a hold maybe Joya was across that line of scrimmage I don't think he was I don't think so either that's what I initially thought but where I looked where he released the ball and where the yard marker was I don't think he was over offensive pass interference is the call and that's where it gets really tricky on screens rpos if you throw it too late you can have some illegal contact up front early and that's what happened to the miners so that backs them up 15 yards yeah because you start blocking and then it becomes a pass play and and now you're making illegal contact when that ball goes in the air I do love the play call though any offense that can run rpos to succession that is a dangerous team to play and when you talk about a good defense like Wayne State here's the handoff to Har he's bottled up right away lot of cats in there early and not allowing AJ Harris more than two yards I think for Wayne State one of the things they're going to have to do you look across the front line that's certainly some youth defensively uh James Franks a sophomore one of the ends Carter sitzman uh 64250 is a sophomore those are some younger guys Luke Lambert defensive tackles a sophomore and Kaden Sutton a junior so uh some youth a little bit across that front line we've seen how good they've been in the past against the run and and rushing the passer got to be good again here this year joyya deliver it's h in at the 50 yard line taking a few steps back is the receiver CJ jarm but he makes the catch and a nice job to get the football and move the sticks up a little bit on a corner route I think Alex sha number 49 on that tackle another good linebacker for Wayne State they have so many guys that can play that spot Alex sha another guy that was very good last year while koal matter of fact he I believe he took that spot from qualic while he was hurt but had a really nice year a year ago brings up a big and early third down Joya with a running back to his right he'll look to throw pressure coming in from that left side it's sitman giving Chase joyo will run and he'll get a few yards but still short of the first down by about 10 yards got back to the original line of scrimmage or just a few yards ahead of there but good pressure off the left side I don't know how fast Tyler Joya is but I can tell you I would be a 44 guy if I had Carter sitman chasing me down 64250 big dude there on that as you said on that from that end spot now Joya did pick up some positive yards but not nearly enough for the first down so Wayne State's going to get the ball ball for the first time here in 2024 Logan Jacobson will punt as Dawson forgi is under it makes the fair Catch and that is a beautiful punt by Jacobson and will pin the Wildcats offense deep to get this thing started we've got the band play it is football weather it's football atmosphere because that's exactly what we've got in Wayne America on ncn so a nice drive from Missouri S&T for a moment a big offensive pass interference really halted things for the miners yeah disrupted that uh that possession for the miners as you mentioned a really good kick there by Jacobson pins Wayne State deep this was an area at times that Wayne State struggled in when they were backed up against their own End Zone last year here's an early handoff bodying through the defensive line of Missouri SN M Missouri S&T do forgi with a few yards on his first Carry of 2024 let's talk a little bit about the offense for Wayne State first of all you got to start up front don't you you got some really good linemen jet Johnson is about as good a lineman as you're going to find in division two fouryear starter there at left tackle number 79 he is fantastic and we'll talk more about these guys here in a moment taking a shot down field catches made but out of bounds great effort by the sophomore Kendrick Watkins hog who had a big freshman season a year ago throw just a little off to the mark yeah there is we're talking about offensive guys Kendrick Watkins ho the guy that just caught that ball he was out of bounds you see the kind of hands he has but he is a playmaker in space he's a guy that can make catches you know it with without much space but can also catch it and take it to the house he's a special player only a sophomore for the wild cats if you remember last year Kendrick Watkins hog had a catch where he was down on the ground he was falling down and he made the catch it was one of the best plays that we've seen all year Dawson forgi gets the handoff pushes his way through and picks up the first down after a big second effort and help from that offensive line yeah there you go there's there were times the last couple of years where teams could come in and really slow down that running game or Wayne State and make them more one-dimensional we talked about that again at the in the pregame can Wayne State run ball and and not expect Nick bone to be the rusher and that it starts with that offensive line so far so good good push up front by the big uglies four the five offensive lineman return for Wayne State in 2024 as bone looks to throw he's got all of his receivers deep downfield now he runs he'll get out of bounds hit late and there is the flag that's an easy decision by the official was way out of bounds before the defense came in yeah guys just trying to make a hit there trying to make a play a first ball game nothing egregious about that but very definitely out of bounds Nick bone very valuable guy they're going to do everything they can to protect him get flushes him out of the pocket and watch the hit there definitely way out of bounds easy call you or I could make that call cica Bradley laid the boom sophomore from Clarksville Tennessee but that is one where if you are Andy ball head coach for the miners you do not want that to happen especially when Wayne State is as far back as they are on the field you don't want to let them out you don't want to make that mistake and allow not only get him out of that bad field position but you know give him that first down keeps this drive going offense bunched up latravius Boyd in the back field with Nick bone fake to to Boyd Bowen will roll out again he's got a little space before he throws it's tipped and incomplete great defense by the miners getting their hands up and tried to make a play defensively Keon chaet was there defensively I believe he got his hand on the football I think that's the best thing you can do when you're trying to defend Bowen is to stay in front of him don't allow him to scramble away keep him in front of you and then get your hands up tip those passes you saw saw it there nearly a turnover in s&t's favor three seniors on the defensive front for Missouri S&T mixed in with a red shirt freshman as latravius Boyd gets the handoff he cuts his way up for a nice gain of about eight yards brought down just shy of the marker good push again number 77 the center will Wasing B another really good player sou Falls guy sou Fall South Dakota 63 300lb Center remember when 300 lb guys were not all that common now division two they're everywhere washenberger is huge third and short three two- wide receivers to the near side it's also Dane Peterson the tight end who will run to block for Dawson forgi yet he's still just about a yard short miners defense got in there to help make the stop all right Kaylin you're playing a video game you go for it here right but probably not first game of the season so you know Coach master is obviously a great coach U you're tempted I think to go for it here and try to keep the drive alive you play the the percentages here def you like the way your defense kind of played I think that first possession uh you don't take a chance here and give Missouri S&T the short field fi what's amazing is that you could play the video game nowadays as CFB 25 is out the college football video game here's an awesome punt it just HPS over the plane and into the end zone Trevor Marshall is the punter for Wayne State today he's going to be punting all season long and that's an interesting story he had to take over the punting duties last year due to an injury if you know Trevor Marshall he is a solid wide receiver he's a go-to option for Nick Bowen and now for 2024 he's the guy when it comes to putting the football yeah that was a nice kick that just took a you know one of those weird bounces the football that oblong ball you never know how that thing's going to bounce but he placed that very well just got the bad bounce into the end zone but a great kick there by Marshall seven minutes gone in this fourth quarter and both offenses have had a try miners offense comes back out on the field as Joya will hand this off it's Harris Harris not a lot he's brought down fairly quickly Kaden Sutton the Junior from Adele Iowa makes the stop now Sutton got a hold of him and just kind of you know bear hugged him and threw him to the ground that's H so far I like the way this front is playing you got some guys some second teamers like Trent rasmon and and Jackson Johnson Dr P that have played a lot of football so I think you're going to see a lot of substitution I think here between those two lines two pretty good lines miners snap quickly thrown and trying to slip away before being brought down a yard shy from the marker nice quick play for justice Braden the sophomore tight end with his first second Catch of the Day The Tackle by Dexter Larson the middle linebacker not a big guy I me he's big he's 215 he's bigger than me but 510 not real tall but a just a missile out there at that linebacker spot a toss to Harris who sheds away from a tackle and Spins away from another but he picks up the first down as the wild cats start to pile on some bodies you look at a guy like AJ Harris 511 210 he's got that D1 build he's a big Stout fella it's going to be a good back for this team and those short yardage situations get behind a pretty experienced front line that the S&T has as well they might be pretty good in that running game this year Franken raspon subbing quickly for Wayne State as offensively it's neibo Who's In Motion now the handoff to neibo and he's brought down oh just about a one yard gain Gideon Neo returns kicks for Missouri S&T and a short gain NE was not even listed on the two deep I was watching them in the pregame and he made a catch off of a kick over his shoulder that was I mean Willie Mayes one of the better catches now it didn't count it was pre pregame but one of the most fantastic catches I think I've ever seen here's Sanders cuts inside and brought down after a gain of three bring up third and medium for the minor offense well this is the first time since 2011 that Wayne State opens the season against a non-conference opponent usually it's an nsic battle to open up the year but this time it's week zero and for the first time in 13 years communication up front Cole Latrell pointing to the defense third down Joya looking pressured he's in trouble Joya goes down wild cats get in there and make the play Drake ped along with Trent rasmason yeah that was a stunt they ran a stunt and it got to the quarterback Drake P I mentioned him a moment ago really good player from a year ago watch kind of hard to see there but they just run a stunt inside Pete rasmuson both get there make a big play Not only uh make it a fourth down but throw S&T for a big loss you're going to have some trouble against the Wildcat defense all day long if you can't block that front four and they've got so many different guys who can make plays as forgi Returns the kick up to around the 50 yd line short return but either way Wayne State is in position for the offense what you just saw there is going to be key for Wayne State offensively this entire season good running plays especially on first down this offense is especially dangerous when you you've got the whole Playbook working for you A lot of times you saw last year you'd have like second n second and 10 now second and four this offense can do so many things fakes the handoff Bowen he's got time he'll take a shot it is incomplete was searching for Curtis wit The Freshman from Council Bluffs just a little too far for the freshman and that brings up third down well another thing we talked about of course the offensive line for Wayne State four out of the five from last year return the only new player is Right Guard Jake Styer otherwise you bring back Terrell Tomkins you bring back will washing Burger Chris Graham Jr and of course the for the All-American jet Jansen protecting that left side J Janson has started every game he has played here at Wayne State that is fantastic keeper for Bowen he slips a tackle and Bowen gets the first down made the defender miss it was senica br who he had stumbling and Bradley was also the one who had that late hit earlier this quarter yeah and another flag is out uh oh hope it's not oh you see Carson pringer he had his hands on his helmet not too happy about yeah it's coming back whatever it is it's like it's coming back maybe I'll wait the call a nice move from Nick Bowen to pick up the first down you see how what makes Bowen so special ability to beat you with his legs he's he's a running back that can throw the ball really well out to the play unsp conduct number five defense defense flag goes against Derek Thomas that is his first unsportsman like cond so if Thomas gets another one he would be ejected from this game but perhaps they were walking it back the other way a moment ago and maybe there was some miscommunication initially of who the penalty was on now we're going to see it again here there's Thomas on the ground got up oh yeah he grabbed the ankle of Boyd that's what you do when you try to keep me from leaving the booth you just grab on to my ankles I can't I can't have you leaving Lou first and 10 from the 20 Wildcats threatening thanks to the big penalty would have been a first down anyway here's Bowen lots of time delivers a d Dart over the middle for the touchdown Kendrick Watkins hog reels it in and it is the cat's first score of the season what what a strike there's that arm from Nick Bowen and what a Target Kendrick Watkins H you I think you saw a couple of guys that are probably going to be all Northern Sun this season watch this pass just a strike Kendrick Watkins ho catches it one-on-one coverage that's tough to cover him he's very difficult to assignment free safety David Harris was in Pursuit but not quick enough for the sophomore Kendrick Watkins hog he had nearly 60 catches a year ago 743 yards and eight touchdowns the Pat from Boston Hensley is perfect and with 248 to play in the first that offensive line is doing work absolutely great pass protectors and I think we you've seen a great Improvement on the at least I mean it's first quarter of the first game but they look good running the football as well they've been able to kind of crease some holes there for the running backs I think this is a a solid offensive line that the Wildcats have here comes Missouri S&T Tyler Joya leads the offense back out on the field Man in Motion is red ly here's the handoff not a lot of space to work for AJ Harris he is the lead back so far in this first quarter for the miners and the helmet pops off for Dexter Larson so he'll have to take a seat and coming in for him Tyler lir lir is a guy that's been around here too senior from Bennington Nebraska I think they know how to play football recruit in 2022 so he had offers at his door from many places opted for the early commitment to stand for Stanford before heading to Iowa State nowhere to go this time AJ Harris swallowed up after a loss of two Jackson boss in there to make the stop Jackson boss rri freshman from norfol gets the tackle there good penetration by the Wayne State Defense nothing to doing there if you can get to get to Harris early before he gets those shoulders squared up you got a chance and that's what they did on that play Third and nine Joya steps up he has got lots of space now decides to run try to make lir go he makes a miss and picks up the first down he dropped the ball on his way to it picked it back up like a basketball this is what you call a could have should have they had a chance to sack him they don't get him he he gets out of the pocket he drops the football and drib bounces twice look like a point guard out there dribbling the the basketball and still gets to the first down give give joy a credit to stay with that thing well looks like they're marking him just short they might check this out at the end of the first quarter end of the first quarter and it is fourth in short for brings up second and short you talk about a guy like Dexter lson nsic player to watch for Wayne State led the team in tackles was second in the conference with 91 tackles and including four sacks and an interception he had nine tackles for loss you pair him up with Alex kowalik it's one of the best linebacker Duos not only in the nsic but in all of D2 yeah absolutely no question about that those guys are both tackling machines as I mentioned before uh Bic had over 100 tackles in 2022 here's an RPO it is caught first down hold in by CJ who was a big player for the miners a year ago he was the all glvc first team had 37 catches for 507 yards and seven touchdowns moris the cornerback playing over there like he went for the ball but was able to secure the tackle now that they did get the first down but does not give up a big chunk play uh making a sure tackle there in the open field ly in motion to block for AJ Harris rather that's Josh Sanders with the carry doesn't matter who's out there right now they're getting some yards on the ground and the offense slowly but surely moving I think that's what you want to see for Missouri S&T you want to see efficiency yeah they got to avoid the mistakes you can't have the penalties it derail uh your your drives and last year they had some turnover problems no flag either way now finally one comes in we'll see what the call is both sides moved it looked like the defense jumped first but did he break the plane that's Jackson boss on the near sideline he and Shaw I think both were defense reaction remains second down so second and short it's always a game of of he said he said when it comes to the offense and the defense Jake sidel was pointing here at boss after he came forward he just swag in that finger pretty easy to to uh to tell who's pointing at who here's the handoff Sanders lost the football but forward progress they will say was stopped that whistle was blown you can hear it up here and it's a first down a bir came knocks it out of his hands great great defensive play there by Gerald flock if you're Reed Weber you want to bring that ball down as quickly as possible but would fly right on your tail not much you can do Joy a quick throw far sideline it's hauled in and trying to stretch out for a few more is CJ jarm and he has been the go-to guy for Missouri s& picks up his third catch there yeah like the Quick Pass there good quick completion now it's third down and five we'll see if Missouri S&T is thinking four downs here they want to just run the football I mean they've been able to run it well here especially this drive you got AJ Harris back out there trying to work in on that interior Joya will throw he'll throw Far Side it is incomplete was looking to go deep for CJ Wiggins that's good defense Gerald fly think that was chy as well number 30 watch the inside position inside leverage by Cheney just a great job does not allow the receiver to get over the top of him or around him great inside leverage and now Missouri S&T has to settle for a field goal opportunity that's Braden Cheney the sophomore who picks up his first start today what a play to make that incompletion here's the kick it is no good Lane Rials put his leg on it and leaves It Wide to the right so Missouri S&T not able to capitalize and the wild cats will take over big win for the Wildcat defense Missouri s& able to put together a drive but Come Away with nothing and you got to love the the excitement from not only the players some of the coaches out there jumping up and down this it's a good uh good coaching staff that not only uh good you know football guys but I think players like playing for these guys quick handoff it's Dawson forgi and he's brought down after a short gain of two mentioned the the coaching staff that defense Scott mclin they're the defensive coordinator he's been here a long time Dad was the coach here he's been here 18 years 10th season as a defensive coordinator and you it's a good defense he's got a chance with this group to really shine I think there's just a lot of Chemistry Between Masters and his coordinators here's a shot downfield it is incomplete looking to go difficult play to make fona with a short tackle forces way take to punt Marshall with the boot and it's a nice one oh big hit after the return wow Gideon Neo got lit up now great special team play we'll see that again here believe that was uh Mitchell Anderson another Bennington fella about the 30 yard line he just takes his about takes his head off there good special teams play you want to you want to make plays just just go to Bennington and get some Bennington guys right I mean you can do no wrong if you go to Bennington a team that's won multiple state championships as of late badgers have a great program and they are dominant in class B here in Nebraska keeper Joya throws on the run it's hauled in for the first down and a few more catches made on the over Midfield it's Bryson burns the burns just came on a Crossing pattern inside that zone the zone defense defensively as the crossing pattern gets open the throw from Joya yeah on the run to his left right on yeah right and he and he threw it right on the money first and 10 near Midfield Joya quickly again outside it is HED in no that ball comes out incomplete looking again for CJ jarmin he's the early favorite for Tyler Joya that time when you see it played up a little tighter defensively kind of challenged the receiver of Cheney playing him tight second down and 10 47 yd line for Missouri SNT you got wide receivers stacked on both the near and The Far Side hands it off to AJ Harris there's a bit of a delay but Harris with a burst of speed near the sticks he's just shy of the first we get Harris out in open space that's a bad thing for Wayne State cuz he again we mentioned you got to get him before he turns those shoulders cuz he's number one he's a big dude he's got some pretty good Wheels there once he gets going that's that's a pretty tough guy to bring down third and short Joya in the gun it's a handoff to Harris and he's got the first down you're going to see the ball in AJ Harris's hands quite a bit today yeah and why not I mean I would be giving him the the football regularly because he is a good football player big strong kid and again you got a pretty good offensive line in front of you so why not use him and they they you know certainly they see that as well and they and they are utilizing the 511 210 sophomore two seniors on the left side of the line for Missour S&T Jake Sidell and Cole Latrell here's the RPO this is H in as Joya got popped catches made by R ly for a short gain got rid of that very quickly did Joya good pressure believe that was was uh I think that was Shaw that was in there on that pressure I I believe second down for Missouri S&T 39 yd line missed a field goal on the miners last trip this way high snap looking going to run Joya with a ton of space face Tyler joet gets a block up field across the 20 and he's out of bounds big gain of about 19 yards for Tyler Joya we say coming on a blitz quck there off that right side misses him and Joya did a good job he read that play he immediately saw that Blitz coming and Tuck the ball down and went past kowalik and there was nobody behind him he picks up a great gain Missouri S&T on the move right now under six to play in the first half two wide receivers on the far side throw out is incomplete from Joya was trying to find jarm again on the out I think if you get Tyler Joya some confidence this miners offense will be tough to stop remember Tyler Joya a year ago he had one player of the week in the glvc and it was when they played Wayne State Joya had 323 yards along with three scores also through three interceptions yeah but he was part of the reason that the miners came back against the Wildcats Neo short carry gain of two you look at the uh the discrepancy from last game now at halftime now we're 532 to go before halftime but last year at halftime Wayne State had 398 yards and 38 points on just 31 plays now the second half was much different only had about 80 yards and no points but that first half absolutely dominant now today uh Wayne State with 39 rushing yards and 26 receiving yards so Missouri S&T doing a good job defensively and also controlling the time of possession right now Joya looking to throw defense comes in Julia goes down Jackson boss I believe in there to make his sack it's his first career sack at the college level the red shirt freshman from nor fork yeah Jackson boss is is really good in that spot where he's playing right now at that end spot think kind of a natural end about 63 245 and he's got good athletic ability and we'll just watch him beat his man and get in there that's just a great individual effort there by Jackson boss now this is a big fourth and 16 oh a little Pooch Punt and that is coffin cornered beautifully four yd line is where they will mark this wow what a play call looks like one of my chips when I play golf I just I chip it on the on the green just keeps going yeah keeps going on the other side that was a great kick though yeah watch this up you know you wonder about that do you go for it I that's a good call if you if you can execute it you know if you kick it in the end zone you you barely pick up any any field position at all but if you got a guy that can uh you know Pooch pun it like that just cough and corner it Wayne stayed in a bad spot now at their own three yard line we'll see what this offense can do and maybe more importantly we'll see what the minor defense does here's boy he stumbles and is down maybe got a yard tripping forward to the five yeah I think that's what slowed that play Down was just boy just lost his footing but this is where you want to rely on the big dogs up front and and run that football these are situations where you want that offensive line to dominate and be able to move the ball Missi S&T across that front line they've got some seniors but uh overall fairly young defensive front hand off of again Boyd's got speed and L travus Boyd with a lot of space l travus Boyd across Midfield say goodbye to L travius Boyd 95 yd rushing touchdown wow 95 yards my goodness not only do you get a big hole there to get through there boy show some speed he's got some Wheels out there just ran away from that Missouri S&T defense they couldn't catch him watch this uh a nice hole there right up the middle and then it's a track me after that and boy gets to the tape first the cut back inside after the wall set up by jet Jansen and Chris Graham Jr allows latravius Boyd the hole and the speed of Boyd is unmatched the pat booted through and Wayne State in the blink of an the wind out of your like a gut punch right you get the the offense has moved well enough you get the missed field goal that's really has not helped Missouri S&T after the short carry that's Josh Sanders on the quick carry for the miners and they've got 35 to move down the field and try to put some points on the board and they've got all their timeouts remaining so you don't have to rush here and they will fake the hand off Joya throws quickly cutting across is CJ jarm jarmin up to the 30 yd line and a first down Joy has done a good job against that pressure for the most part got rid of that football again again and avoided the pressure and that gives Missouri S&T the first down clock is ticking quickly 233 to play in the first half we'll see if Joya will let a rip four wide receivers on the low snap Joya steps up in the pocket he decides to run presence breaks down he gets brought down after a nice tackle Joya only got a few but I job by Alex kowalik making the play Alex kowalik tackles everything that I remember a couple years ago I was walking in my car and he tackled me and he's uh watch this play though did he apologize no he just you know he mocked me and got in that hit got in there and looks like that was Larson Larson and coalza kind of got his legs made Harris have to flip over the line but it's first down a minute and a half remaining in the first half lson with those golden shoes Joya pump figes he'll decide to run looking to get a block Joya cuts to the outside what a run from Tyler Joya with the first down across the 50 outside at the 42 yd line my joy is got some Wheels here that's a pretty impressive run he finds that that you know steps up in the pocket but watch him run around that corner and gets away from a couple Defenders there and picks up the first down good Wheels there from the sophomore quarterback Tyler Joya has been active today on the ground not to mention his effort through the air so far almost had an offsides call on the outside throwing in quickly over the middle incomplete what a play defensively it's the sophomore Clyde Hinton from plats Smith with deflection and second down CL hitting the Sam linebacker out there number eight that's what we we talked about Larson and kozik and they're great players Alex Shaw has done a nice job Clyde hiton makes the play there a lot that's what I talked about with this Wayne State team has got a really good linebacking crew 58 rushing yards for Joya today he had 200 all season last year he's got a quarter of it in the first game of the year Joya pressure steps up fires high pass hold in nice tackle made but the first down right at the 23 What A Catch Reed Weber Morrison made the tackle but I think he slipped going back there in in coverage and able to get back up and it was not him though that that slipped Joe Morrison made the play Morrison does make the play 23 yd line 45 seconds to play in the first half Missouri S&T looking for something delayed handoff no it's a fake Joya will have to heave this one out of bounds and stop the clock with 36 seconds the good thing if you're Missouri S&T you still have three timeouts left 36 seconds you still have pretty much your entire offensive game plan your you know your your play calling at your disposal with three timeouts 14 to nothing Wayne State leads but Missouri s& they've moved the football and honestly this first half for the miners has all been short of the first down short of The End Zone by a little bit short of the crossbar on the field goal attempt outside a catch is made looking for the big body Justice Braden who hauls it in brings up third down but cuts the yards about halfway was Jacob bird the strong safety that come came up and made that hit third and six from the 19 you got you tried to get the first down here obviously you got 30 seconds to go you don't have to go to the end zone Joya rolls out Joya will throw Joya has the completion a little bit of early contact but it doesn't matter the catch is made on the far sideline what an effort again Reed Weber that might have been Gerald fly that made the early little bit of early contact here right there he got him a little bit early they and now the call it's coming back the other way wow wow yeah missed the missed I think a pass interference on Wayne State or at the latest if anything you could have had offs sending penalties yeah but now that backs up from from here batteries out they don't get any yards on this play from here it's a 50 yd field goal and the clock is running right now and now it's stopped well you got three timeouts you might want to use them the officials are getting together and maybe they did call I they were talking about it here they did let some time tick off that clock you've got to be a little frustrated if you're Andy ball right now yeah standing at the 45 yd linee 30 seconds yeah on the game 30 seconds and it will start on the snap okay so starting on the snap so that's good for Missouri S&T but obviously losing with the first down and making it third and 16 off of a potential pass interference tur holding again you still have three timeouts to use but third and 16 you I mean it's prettyy obvious passing down you might be able to run a draw play or something like that and and try to pick up a good gain and set yourself up for a fourth down or try to get yourself in better field goal range officials looking where to spot the ball Masters is talking with the official now on the near sideline talking with referee Shan Johnston we talked about the players how about the referee from Bennington Nebraska they're everywhere sea Johnson the head referee it is a split crew of Nebraska and Minnesota officials third and 16 from the 29 after the penalty and we still that's the first game got to get some things everybody's working on things in game one yeah whether it's the players the officials the coaches broadcasters yeah we need that that usually will continue all year long if you can get a shot of number 44 there Dexter Larson those gold shoes out there you are just I mean I think they just make you look like you run faster I needed some of those because I was really slow back in my day but captivated there we go wow those are sharp they just give you the impression that you're running really fast I mean and Dexter Larson's a fast dude so I mean for a guy like him you know just uh fast guy look even faster I guess if those cleats made it made you look like you could run fast well that's a miracle it is a miracle third and 16 19 seconds is on the is on the scoreboard Joya snaps pressure immediately Joya steps up he's got to throw it Hees it to the End Zone it is tipped and incomplete the effort from the Wildcat defense helps force that incompletion was searching for Bryson Burns that's Jackson boss again the left hand came all the way around watch number 48 he beats his man again hey boy they' have trouble uh blocking the Freshman Jackson Boston then the tip there great play one-on-one defensively Gerald fly again he is playing Well Lane Rials missed the field goal his last timeout in a Timeout called by Wayne State 12 seconds to play in the first half Wildcats 14 miners nothing should be a 46 yd field goal from where they're at so not an easy kick now the wind has uh I think died down considerably since the thunderstorms rolled through but the good thing is is I guess for Missouri S&T is that it's going to be a straight kick it won't be an angled kick it should be right a chance to kick it right down the middle still three timeouts left uh but fourth down and 16 uh I don't think you're going to see any sort of fakes here the Miss from RI earlier was 39 and Lane RS a young guy he is just a sophomore from Lewis bur Kansas is the right hes I guess I was wrong where they're spotting it the kick is on its way curling and it is good so laye riyals bounces back from a 39 yd Miss earlier and comes back with a 46 yd make 14-3 it puts the miners on on the board but still in a two-score deficit with 7 seconds on that first half clock well it's a just a good momentum Builder there RI knocks that one through from 46 an impressive kick and you get some points it just gives you something positive going into the locker room now for Wayne State you know you're up 14 to3 I I don't think anybody's going to have to say hey remember last year we had a 24-point lead at halftime and almost lost that game I think everybody remembers that is so uh a long way from over a good first half for Wayne State but you you like these uh if you're Missouri S&T you like the way these guys are hanging around they they've had some bad luck you certainly Wayne State has made some plays uh but you know you look at the stats it's it's pretty even uh you take away that 95 yard run which you certainly you can't take it away but if you took that out of the stats you Missouri S&T would be uh would be controlling the stats and and certainly uh the time of possession right now definitely in favor of the miners uh 23 minutes and 9 seconds to the miners only 644 for Wayne State miners have moved the ball but they haven't capitalized in moments where they've really needed it right and Wayne State had a quick drive plus a 95 yd touchdown from lat travus boy here's a kick off to the right side it is forgi who slides over to make the reception before he's down to the ground you know you mentioned Missouri S&T just not able to make some plays on third Downs which you credit a lot of that to Wayne State Defense we've seen a lot of pressure uh we've seen guys like qualik and and lson and Jackson boss all uh you know Shaw all these guys really get in that back field and pressure in the quarterback I will also say that I think Joy has handled it overall pretty well he's been able to step out of that and and pick up some yards with his feet and he has not made you know the bad throws we we we mentioned you you can't turn the ball over against Wayne State here on the road and win and they have not done that and they won't take a KNE they'll hand it off to Dawson forgi who works up field SNT trying to strip the ball they can't do it and that brings us to the end of the first half so a low-scoring defensive battle and Wayne State is on top at the break 14-3 over Missouri S&T coming up next this is a beautiful building you have a look at it on your screen coming in the spring of 2025 which is not very far away and I love I love the indoor facility because you could do so many things with it you got gyms you've got a turf field but one of the things that I'm really excited about L the next time and em and CI is the pickle ball court are you a pickle ball guy uh I eat pickles every now and again but you know i' I've watched pickle ball and it looks like a fun game I have never played it but I'd like to do I'd like to play it and maybe I'll go to Carney and play it if it sounds like they're going to have a fantastic facility there you mentioned it I've got pickles on this s right here in front of me and I've been playing pickle ball my wife and I we like to go down to the courts usually tnis courts work very well for it it's just two paddles you got a nice little ball it makes an awesome sound it's a lot easier than tennis it's almost like giant pingpong but I'm also awful at to give credit to Wayne State they made plays when they had to way uh Missouri s& was able to move the ball and they were able to to put themselves in position to score but it seemed like many times Wayne State would come up with a big play on the defensive side to keep them from scoring finally the miners get the 46-yard field goal there to end the half um but uh you know if Wayne State you'd like to see more first of all able to move the ball more in the second half and certainly sustain some drives they have the the one touchdown Drive there's a 95y old U 95y old 95 I'm talking about myself now 95 yard run for the touchdown uh but they have not been able to put together a long drive I'm sure that's a a challenge that coach Masters will give his team here at halftime well let's take a look at some of those biggest plays from both the wild cats and the miners you talk about this defense for Wayne State that was really the start Drake ped with a big sack and then a imately on the ensuing Drive throw over the middle Kendrick Watkins hog for his first touchdown of the year he had eight last year 21 yard score seven to nothing Wayne State leads they have to boot the ball away Gideon neibo is there and then gets popped great play defensively by the wild cats Now we move over to Missouri S&T with good position until Jackson boss works his way through and boss makes his first career sack and how about latri travus Boyd breaking through for a 95 yd touchdown Kats go up 14 to nothing right into your living room pretty happy about Boyd and to finish off the first half a field goal from 46 yards that drops through which was the after missing a 36 39 y capitalizes on a 406 yard as the Wayne State dance team comes on to the field to get things going here with a nice routine with about four minutes left in our halime break kayin Deon and lucer let's take a look from some scores around the nsic because not only do we have this game going on well and around football in general this is kind of besides for week zero last week in D1 this is week zero for D2 right and you you've got most of the teams from the northern Sun Conference playing tonight uh first of all Michigan state is playing bidi State bidi State now if you remember uh coach masters 10 and one in his career here at uh at home one loss was to Bidi State last year bidi State at halftime just started the third quarter they Trail Michigan Tech 7even to nothing Minnesota duth plays at Northern Michigan Minnesota duth watch out for the Bulldogs they are they're actually picked to finish first in the conference despite being ranked behind three teams Minnesota state Ben State and August they're they're 2 fifth in the country but they they have a nice lead 37 357 at halftime against Northern Michigan Minnesota state the favorite uh uh by some people actually pit third in the preseason they're up 299 over Northwest uh Missouri State Northwest Missouri State ranked 22nd in the country so that's an impressive first three quarters that's at the end of the third quarter Minot State 24-7 over Valley City State uh the South toota coyotes playing Northern State at the dome in Vermillion they're up 24-3 uh Midway through the second quarter and of course here Wayne State up 14-3 over Missouri S&T the one team not playing tonight is Augustana they're picked right now in that pole picked to finish second in the northern Sun certainly a team to watch again Minnesota duth Aus the first two teams uh picked in that poll they Wayne State doesn't play either of those teams remember last year Wayne State and Augustana in the snow Yeah upset Wayne State took down the 12th ranked Augustana Vikings in that one and we are there's another game I want to ask about if you can find Unk kicking off this season tonight against shadron it's an instate rival and the lopers are up 10 to nothing on Shad yeah that was that was quick that was our director there Conor that gotor he said he's watching the game right now he's not watching us he's watching the other one I'm just kidding it's all on news channel Nebraska ton all of around Nebraska and also in division one North Dakota State the FCS bison ahead of the Colorado Buffalo with 1102 to play in the first half 17 to nothing and DSU wow go by S sorry 1714 17 14 there you go but I said I mean I if I I don't care Colorado it doesn't matter Nebraska I would not play anybody with Dakota in their name South Dakota State North Dakota State don't play those teams to start the year they are so good all right 14-3 wild cats Seer tonight on news channel Nebraska here in Wayne America it's a beautiful evening had some rain a little bit earlier in the night but that is far gone now the field is dry for the most part and we are ready for the second half of action and Wayne State will be receiving they kicked off to start the football game and now they will have the opportunity to increase what already is a two-score lead okay the Missouri S&T do you know where Missouri S&T is located Missouri yeah well that's a good guess I mean uh they're in Rola Missouri which is about an hour and hour and a half hour and 45 minutes Southwest of St Louis about a halfway in between Springfield and St Louis Missouri so in case the fans at home wanted know where this team's from now certainly uh you know roll of Missouri if you're if you're like me you're St Louis Cardinal fan you can just drive to the Cardinal games and you know unfortunately this year watch him lose a lot but oh well that's the you know Wayne State doesn't play as you mentioned that in the the top of the broadcast that you know first time since 2011 that they've opened the season against a non-conference opponent there for several years you just played Northern Sun teams you didn't play teams outside of your conference so uh not a lot of folks real familiar with with Missouri S&T but that's where they're from well the miners are a little late when it comes to getting out on the field it looks like the wild cats are ready to roll they've got their sideline filled up Missouri S&T now is officially trotting back out onto the field I think if your Wayne stayed here in the second half Kaylin it's going to be important to to get some continuity going offensively you know if you look at the statistics you've got uh you you've got uh Joya in the passing game he's 11 of 19 for 201 yards uh passing the football where Wayne State and Nick bone he's two for six for 26 so you've got to you know you've got to be able to establish something offensively you've had that one long run um and then certainly that uh one of the completions one of those two completions that uh Nick bone had was uh for that touchdown but they're just not able to really put together the drive and again I think that's something that they talked about at halftime as establishing something offensively and and you certainly would like to get Nick bone going in the passing game a lot of weapons out there credit the miners they've been able to really really kind of take Wayne State out of the game just one that one big play if you take that out of there it's a seven to3 game and and really was time of of possession and uh total yards in the favor uh of Missouri S&T overall in that first half well the miners are lining up on the goal line getting ready to do some stretches here clock showed that the first half the 20 minutes were off about three minutes ago so the miners are just now kind of getting ready to hop back out there and their defense will have a big task to kick off the second half they've done a good job today stopping Wayne State for the most part but it's been a few big plays here and there otherwise the wild cats have only had the ball for just over six minutes yeah 166 total yards for Wayne State in that first half and 95 of those were on one play so certainly you you'd like to do better you know I've said it several times and you can't take the 95 yard out of the equation but if you if you take that out of the statistics then certainly Wayne State outside of that one play under a 100 yards total offense in the first half and I I think Logan Masters would would agree that that's just not going to cut it you've got to have to do better in the second half if you're going to beat these guys uh we we know from last year just you know how Plucky these guys are they're not going to go away and they're uh I I've really been impressed with Tyler Joya and how he's handled things but Wayne State defensively very opportunistic and they they've made plays when they've had to and they've kept uh the miners off the scoreboard other than that 46-yard field goal and you mentioned Joya with over 200 yards in that first half of play his career high is 323 and that was against Wayne State last year so right now he's on track to break that career high obviously we'll see what happened to the second half because anything can happen yeah but you'll really want to get that offense to finish the drives mouri S&T has done a great job moving the football but they haven't capitalized the drives that they wanted to and if you're the miners that's what you got to do if you're head coach Andy ball you've got to figure out a way to find those plays that work for you almost every time AJ Harris has done a great j a great job running the football today but again it's been just a few plays just shy of a first down just shy of of the end zone really for the miners in that first half yeah with Nick bone right now total offense is uh about 34 yards that's H you know you know Wayne State's got to have Nick bone making plays uh to win the ball game and I think you're going to see uh the offense kind of open up here a little bit in the second half the travius Boyd is the leading rusher that again with that big run 104 yards but uh for uh Missouri S&T Tyler Goya the quarterback is their leading rusher at 58 yards his scrambles have have been impressive avoiding pressure quite he''s been pressured a lot Wayne State's really come after him AJ Harris with 47 yards and uh I I don't know that you're going to I don't we'll be interesting to see what Missouri S&T likes to do offensively I don't know that you're going to come out of that your game plan too terribly much you've got to be able to make plays on third down uh if you're going to stay in the game and and the the pressure that Wayne State has given Goya has has made some differences in in a couple of those drives and we are ready for kickoff in the second half as this goes out of the back of the end zone for a Touchback as the Wildcat offense will come back out on the field again they've had the ball for just north of six minutes they're ready to get Nick Bowen out there to see if they can lead a drive yeah if you're Wayne State you'd like to just put together a nice uh timec consuming physical Drive we've been kind of we've talked about that offensive line you'd like to be able to run that football some and certainly Nick bone you've got a bevy of pretty good receivers but Nick Bone's such a good quarterback you want to get him making plays in this third quarter hands it off to Dawson forgi who has a nice Lane forgi gets beaten and battered up across the 40 yd line for a quick gain of 15 right that left side of that offensive line where that old jet jansson's out there that's what you like to see from your running back Dawson forgi he was the one of the top players key go-to guys a year ago had 112 rushes with 503 yards and five touchdowns a year ago he's also a threat through the air they love to run those two backs with Boyd and forgi forgi this time thrown down after a gain of three call it four yards for is not necessarily like a big play thread but he's a guy that'll get you the three four five sixy carries he's a tough guy in between the tackles not the biggest guy but man he's tough he's a tough kid forgy exits as latravius Boyd comes back out there for Wayne State here's the handoff to Boyd who is working his way through close to the marker just about a a yard shy and that will bring up third down and one from the 49 yd line you got to believe it's probably going to be a running play here this is where that big offensive line the big dudes up front got to win these wars these third and one need to be Wayne states to go out and get yeah this is where you got to make a play for the wild cats to keep your drives going on the near sideline it's Jaden Johnson at the wide receiver position three guys bunched in there here's Boyd Boyd trying to break a tackle he does l travius Boyd it's popped at the 35 and Falls forward after a big gain and a first down yeah good job to keep going forward he took a shot out there about the 35 yd line backpedal and picked up about three or four more yards that left side was open pretty good there voyd there he takes that shot Falls backwards picks up about four more yards after contact good hit by pvin Horton but not enough to knock down latravius Boyd and Wayne State in business the 32 yd line already up 14-3 we'll see if the wild cats can improve this lead we say running the football so far on this drive quick pass out on the screen it is Kendrick Watkins hog who had a little room on the sideline picks up a couple we'll see what they mark it we'll call it about three yards on the quick reception for [Music] kwh Watkins hog needs to touch the football too that's a that's like a a long hand off that sort of a pass get the ball of guys like Watkins hog in space allow them to make plays on this offense has so many weapons that it's it's hard to use just one guy we're still looking for a reception from from schoder who is one of the guys that Nick Bowen loves to go to throws this one deep but it's called in h in for the touchdown Dane Peterson excuse me check that number again off the re ction it is actually Curtis wit yep the Freshman Council Bluffs freshman another good pass by Mr bone right on the money boy you can't put it any better than that that's a good route too by Wht to get in front of the defender and boy that uh B just like like he just put it right on his hands I I don't know that you could throw a ball better than you just saw beautifully done Curtis wit beat the Press coverage he had the he got through through the zone and then beat the to play in the third quarter and Missouri S&T with some work to do well Kaylin I think if you know you you would ask uh coach Masters how do you want to start that third quarter he might have said maybe a six play 75 yd drive for a touchdown run the ball some make some passes get this offense un untracked that's what happened six Place 75 yards that's exactly what the doctor ordered for Wayne State in this offense and now it really puts a lot of pressure on Missouri S&T again we've seen them come back a year ago and nearly they were down 24 and nearly w a game long way from over but a lot of pressure right now and I think he might have a IL legal procedure maybe on this one yeah the flag came pretty early and then it is a false start we'll back up the miners five yards to start the drive not the start you'd want but the thing is there's plenty of time in this game as well you've seen the defense you can make plays you can make stops if you're Missouri S&T and the offense can move the ball it's just the little things right now yep and you you can't have I mean that's a five yard penalty but you just you can't put yourself behind the sticks que State's defense too good tight end in motion to The Far Side of the formation fakes it throws it quickly it is incomplete what a play Gerald fly he's been all over the place tried to go for the interception and comes away with the pass deflection yeah he is had a good game he's been in a lot of plays out there Gerald fly he's one of those guys that feels like he's been here about six seven years which you know in this day and age that happens you know with the the co year and get a red shirt maybe a medical red shirt next thing you know you've been in college six seven years I think there's a guy for Miami that's on his ninth year of eligibility for the Miami Hurricanes yeah you got Co you get the injury you get the regular red shirt all of that sometimes you can be awarded up to three to four red shirts for injury as Joy has pressured he'll throw it on the run in a miscommunication between him and his wide receiver as this pass sails incomplete well now third down and 15 not where the miners want to be we'll see if Wayne State just drops back in coverage or you you pressure Joya on on a play like this Joya has done a good job but uh overall but Wayne State's pressure has really disrupted they they've been able to get to him enough to to stop some of these drives third and 15 from the 20 Joya quickly throws a dart over the head of his intender receiver looking for CJ Wiggins and those two have just not linked up today and that is a frustrating three and out for Missouri S&T yeah not what you wanted to have happen for sure miners needed to you just didn't want to go three and out after giving up the touchdown drive and Wiggins was he had a step on his Defender if that Ball's thrown a little bit better that's a big play instead now Wayne State should get the football back in pretty good field position Missouri S&T they're coming after the punt it is gotten away cleanly for will make the fair catch at the 38 yd line off the foot of Logan Jacobson 21-3 wild cats ahead of the miners on news channel Nebraska I buddy's got a mascot right you got Wayne State uh you've got a uh Willie the Wildcat uh you know up up the road you've got you know Herby Husker things like that what did I figured you did cheater first and 10 for the wild cats here's a Dawson forgi gets hit hard almost looked like he lost the football he held on to it but nowhere to go for number 22 forgi just um had nowhere to go there what a play made defensively for the miners tackled by Carson pringer pringer was waiting for fori and he had nowhere to go second and 11 for the Joe miners on defense they bring pressure Bowen looks to throw got a man Marshall Mak the catch Trevor Marshall slips down inside the 20 down to the 15 just could not keep his feet but that was a tough catch he that's the main thing is to catch the football just couldn't keep his feet but a great catch another really good pass uh by Bow Marshall just put a a move uh just an out and up move there on the sidelines he keeps his feet obviously that's a touchdown but as it is a big game and wa State knocking on the door again Derek Thomas was in Pursuit on the move from Trevor Marshall first and 10 from the 15 Bowen hands it off fori forgi cuts to the outside slips an ankle tackle and Falls forward for a few more and this is what you want to see from the Wildcat offense if you're Logan Masters yeah making big plays moving the football and I think it's important for Wayne State to have that running game and that that certainly that first drive in this half able to run the ball it really sets up uh thing if you have to really kind of load the Box a little bit against the running game it makes that that passing game that much more dangerous Boyd is back in and he gets the ball L travus Boyd cuts inside Boyd hit into the end zone touchdown Wayne State Boyd's second TD of the night yeah Boyd gets in there again and now that offensive line is starting to really dominate up front watch Boyd here just slides to his right picks that hole look at that hole there boy's a good back I'm pretty sure I might have got a few yards with that hole and boy he's having a nice ball game here tonight that big long run earlier and now his second touchdown of the night Hensley's p is through and way State takes that three now four score lead 28-3 Wildcats ahead of the miners leading by 25 points we'll see what now I think there's a is there a penalty there is personal foul on the defense certainly that's not what you want if you're away State you really got control of this football game and and plays like that mistakes like that can can set your opponent up for a big play which could change the game so you just got you got to avoid those sort of mental mistakes just don't you got to team down you don't want to let him back up at Midfield mark it right at the 50 Joya fakes the handoff gets drilled throws this one deep it is incomplete it hit Cosby in the back and was looking to throw it over to jarmin yeah Cosby didn't I mean you can't you know you you're trying to stay with the receiver you you don't even realize that ball he got hit pretty good there that was U rasmon I believe for Wayne little gain there on the outside or they will call it now they'll call it right the line of scrimmage S&T did a nice job stringing that play did not allow forg to get outside second down and 10 do it again from the 20 forg in the back field two wide receivers on the far side as Bowen takes the shotgun snap throws it out quickly it's caught by Marshall Marshall nowhere to go and he's wrapped up in the back field a loss of almost five we'll call it around four yards on the loss that's a good open field tackle Marshall had nowhere to go now what a job by paulvin Horton to wrap up and not let Marshall go anywhere brings up third and 14 under five to play in the third two wide receivers on the near side for Bowen he takes the snap looks to throw feels pressure decides to run Bowen with a lot of space he trips and falls down but he might have gotten there he's right at the sticks I think he well I think they're going to spot him maybe a shade short here what an effort for Nick Bowen if he had stayed up yeah well they called it a first down anyway oh they're going to give it to him yeah boy the the linesman here on this side was it looked like he was spotting him maybe a half yard mobile quarterbacks first of all can't throw like Nick bone but mobile quarterbacks just kill you on plays like that here's Boyd to the outside Boyd hurdles it out of bounds gotta love the effort 0 and5 you feel like if this was a game that's played later in the season maybe you'd see a little bit things CLE cleaned up on both sides maybe cleaned up for for the miners but either way Wayne State is finding success and they do they're doing it without even having to hold on to the football yeah they you know they're making plays they've made plays defensively all night the offense here in this third quarter has been completely different than they were in the first half they they've put points on the board they've been able to run the football and and they've made some big plays through the air and been able to extend this lead and and certainly it helps when your defense is putting points on the board but boy what a dominant quarter it was 14-3 at halftime you wondered how this third quarter would go but it's been all Wildcats since the break short gain by Gideon neibo it's third and five Joya with trips to the near side he's got five wide pump fakes Joya looking he'll run a lot of space for joyya has got the first down and more out of Bounds at the 39 yd line one thing about Joya he's first of all is a young young player but he's got good Vision he does have that pick six but able to scramble he's got quick feet and I think uh you know again a sophomore quarterback in time he continues to improve I think he's got a bright future 55 seconds to play in the third the miners keep finding themselves in these third and 10 five wide no encroachment call on the far side defense gets through Joes Slips Away throws it on the Run broken coverage incomplete and a flag last year in four tutes and he catches one here to open up the season on a fade pattern beautiful thrown Ball by Nick Bowen and Bowen 7 for 14 he's 50% passing but he's got three touchdowns on 100 13 yards then you look to the running game seven carries for lat travius Boyd with 141 yards and two scores forgi with 12 attempts 80 yards on the ground he does not have a touchdown yet but that's just how many guys are getting it going for Wayne State the offense is cooking and you look to guys on that interior on that offensive line we mentioned his name a few times JJ jet Janssen Chris Graham Jr will washenberger Jake Styer and Tyrell Tomkins yeah I like that offensive line I think that's a good good group there and Boy you know you look at uh at bone youve you know what what how many yards do he have 120 something or3 113 he's 7even 14 113 yards I think if you're Missouri S&T you think you've done a pretty good job you look up he's got three touchdown passes I mean how much how frustr frustrating does that have to be for for a defense Joya delivers a strike over the middle and that is caught low pass that's hauled in a nice throw and catch that one is reeled in by cran krenshaw so not a lot of time left for Missouri S&T to make a miracle rally but Never Say Die they'll keep the offense out they've got four wide receivers and will'll hand this off short game that running game is really stopped you got to give a lot of credit to this defense for Wayne State on making plays right at the the center of the line of scrimmage yeah that's especially the second half Joya quickly time that just helps you out in the long run miners still looking for their first touchdown of the new campaign Joya drops back throws far sideline it is incomplete good effort on the football caught that didn't he but he caught it out of bounds was looking for CJ Wiggins we'll take another look here I couldn't tell I mean it looked like he caught it yeah just out of bounds oh great effort on that play that was pretty close too yeah just about he got his foot down but right on just outside of that pylon we'd love to check a look on the sideline obviously don't have all the camera angles that's okay second down and 10 from the 21 hand this one off short carry for AJ Harris still giving him the workload that's a guy I think if you're if you're the miners going forward you got to think about utilizing him as much as you can and you've got some weapons you just kind of it's a tough assignment to come on the road I think this Wayne State team this Northern Sun Conference is full of good teams and I think you've got two or three teams that not only could get into the playoffs could probably win in advance a few rounds coming out of this Northern Sun Conference looking to throw steps up in the pocket a lot of space here for Joya Tyler Joya is Into The End Zone touchdown Missouri S&T the miners finally get a score that's a real positive obviously for the miners and Joya boy he's he's a tough kid man watch the uh again the vision here just to see that the pressure coming coming and to step up there and he's quick enough to take that all the way into the end zone a 19 y touchdown that's a good way to get some confidence in your sophomore quarterback Pat is on the way and it is good 726 to play in the ball game Wayne State 42 got a flag down again at this might be a maybe a personal foul Missouri S&T 10 will check the marker both teams exit the field after playit [Music] number9 Drake peed with the late hits y yeah you got to this stage of the game you can't you know you got the lead you don't want to lose your lose your head here and you don't want to risk anything don't want to risk a play where you potentially have an ejection that would really hurt you for this next game that you got coming up which is at MSU Morehead and when you talk about teams that are really improving MSU Morehead that was a fun game last season between the dragons and the wild cats that's a very young team who loves to throw the ball so really challenging here for the Wayne State Defense done a pretty good job against the pass today but there's still been some holes and so that's what you want to lock down against MSU Morehead they love to throw the ball the next three games on this schedule for Wayne State will Define this season you've got two very difficult Road games Minnesota state Morehead as you mentioned a good young football team and that's not going to be an easy game then you've got Minnesota state at home which is the highest ranked team in the northern Sun picked like third but you know we saw them last year they handled Wayne State uh 3114 and then you go to Winona State another team that's pretty pretty tough to beat if you could go two- one or three and0 in those games you you got a special season ahead of you you go one and two or 0 and three that sudden obviously changes the season so those three games I think will be very very important to how well this season goes not to mention the next two games are also night games so three night caps to kick off the year for Wayne State you like playing Under The Lights it's a fun start to the season for the Wayne State Wildcats not to mention Min not state homecoming on October 5th should be a fun one as well and they end the year with Concordia St Paul and the egg bow classic egg bow here in Wayne America always cold too it is snowed last year for the Egg Bowl which was Augustana that was a fun game an upset victory for the wild cats won that game and had I believe less than a 100 yards total offense in that game still won Tanner Cooper had a couple of pick sixes here's a high snap that's taken and out of bounds not a lot of room to go off of the bobbl snap for Bennett Dan bring Bennett Dan bring is a red shirt freshman quarterback he backed up Nick Bowen last year obviously got to red shirt because he didn't have to get in very often and you do get four games as a freshman if you red shirt he's from su falls so he's right in nsic country yeah he'll have some big shoes to feel next year so you really want him to get some snaps if possible and this is certainly a game now well in hand get him a chance to play another high snap looking to throw Dan and bring it bounces to his receiver we'll call that behind the line of scrimmage so that will work looked like it hit the turf yeah looked like a bounce pass and that is you know it's legal I think we saw it with uh there was a I know Nebraska's run that before I think it was Wake Forest and Presbyterian Presbyterian pulled off the bounce pass w and it was a touchdown I'm impressed it was a bounce pass extra pass I should say bounce pass pass 1982 Nebraska Oklahoma game Turner Gill threw a bounce pass to Irving frier who threw a touchdown pass those are the best yeah maybe this will give Logan Masters some insight into running a trick play there you go bring in Dan and bring thr a bounce pass let's see it and a flag y he a false start on the wild cats the young in there so iron some things out 636 to play in the ball game 42-10 Wayne State ahead and this is exactly what you want to see from the wild cats to open up the year didn't even have to dominate time of possession found success moving the ball quickly big play defense forcing a few turnovers denen bring backs up looking to throw he'll launch one deep streaking down the field it's caught Wayne State will score another one brought in by Katon bonderson freshh man from Lamar's Iowa and the wild cats tack on a lead there late against Northern State and gave up a two-point upset loss and that's a game that might have if they had changed the score there Wildcats could have been looking at a another birth into the postseason yeah absolutely I think that should be the goal for this team this year is to get back to the playoffs maybe win a game or two back out comes the minor defense looking to take a shot early High Pass is caught What A Catch Re in by CJ Wiggins think is a good receiver he got some weapons on this team and boy what a pass that that was a tough pass that's a long way to throw the football wigg just went down just kind of sat down and caught that football that's a great catch right in front of Cosby as well couldn't really catch up to it first down Missouri S&T another handoff Cosby Mars on Cosby with another incompletion Cosby stayed with that play that pass is a little bit farther that was a I mean Wiggins went up and nearly caught that football put that ball farther out toward the back of that end zone Wiggins might catch that for the touchdown that ball was thrown a little bit short Cosby in pretty good position to make that play defensively got to give a lot of credit to Missouri S&T they're still fighting they've still got their ones out there trying to get them some more experience and down goes Joya tripped over his feet and sacked by the wild cats I think in that scenario do you give it to whoever touch she last kind of tripped over his feet might just be a u I don't know how that were yeah probably or the closest person to you might be that cats also the fourth straight home opener win the last time that Wayne States lost the season opener was in 2019 37- 20 at Winona State do you like the way that they've been doing it lately here's a Wayne State not to mention 193 years yards through the air they have been doing it on all facets today yeah the the passing game has really come through here in this this third quarter and fourth quarter U I believe at halftime they only had around 26 passing yards but obviously much different in the second half but it's good to see that running game that's good balance that when way state is at their best uh they're balanced you know you able to shut down that running game and and make them onedimensional I think certainly you can beat Wayne State if you can keep that running game going like that obviously makes him a lot harder to beat he just downed at the one yard line I believe he did wow well there yeah wing state think he thought he was in the end zone he down actually down it at the one yd line so they'll have a ways to go we call to 25 they did okay okay I was wondering if he possibly called a fair catch at no yeah yeah that is a part of it okay but I thought I was I from CH View Florida that's a obviously a great start here for Wayne State we'll see what coach Masters thought about the game here shortly a lot to like certainly some things to work on 445 yards of total offense you got to say that it's been pretty good offensively for Missouri S&T as well they just haven't been able to capitalize into points as Jones barrels four to the 30 yard line I this minor team will will knock some people off this year I I again I think uh you know I think Wayne State's got a chance to have a special season I really do you got a ton of experience and you've got uh you know kids that have played on some winning teams I got a two-minute warning here but this team I think's got a chance to win a lot of games and I think at the end of the season you're going to look at the score and you're going to say that was an impressive win because I think Missouri S&T will probably have a winning season this year and you look at the way that they've played they've had the opportunities they've had the moments the miners I've only been in terms of offensive yardage they've got 210 compared to 250 for Wayne State so it's only a or sorry 450 to 410 so it's only a a 40 yard differential between the two so you love seeing that if you are Andy ball the 30-year head coach for the miners and if you're Wayne State I think I think overall you did a pretty good job I think a lot of those rushing yards I don't know what joya's got now but a lot of those rushing yards has come from the quarterback scrambles he he's been able to hurt Wayne State several times by stepping up in that pocket and breaking contain and and picking up you know 10 15 yards Tyler Joya has 103 yards here's a throw incomplete so 103 yards to the ground for Joya 70 for Harris and mean for Wayne State LED On The Ground by Boyd with 141 and forgi with 80 well we've got 156 to play in the ball game as Wayne State brings out the punt team and make sure you stick around for our postgame coaches country I think first of all you've just got to you've got to be consistent I think they look they moved the ball that first half but they kept you know they part of it was Wayne St able to get to Joya especially and pressure him uh but they kept finding themselves in those third and 10 after moving the ball you've just got to try to to be more consistent offensively and and certainly you don't want to give up the big plays that they've given up against Wayne State we've seen it some long passes and certainly the the travus void 95 yard touchdown run you got to avoid those those big plays I think they've got weapons offensively and I think uh I think Wayne State's a you know I a good team offensively um but I think overall you're you're just searching for consistency they make good plays and then they hurt themselves with a bad play got to eliminate the bad ones here's Joya he keeps it throws this one on the run it's hauled in by Gideon neibo and he cuts up field for a solid gain we got to feel the way that the wild cats have played today maybe take a peak in that afca poll next week and see if the wild cats get any more receiving votes they had three in the first poll of the Season which obviously isn't a lot but by the the amount of nsic programs that are in that poll or are receiving votes is pretty amazing and this is a strong conference conference champs for Wayne State in 2022 and they're looking to contend again this year brought down Joya is sacked loving the effort on this spin move how about that play to Miles Dace but either way Wayne State is going to be contending in the northern Sun intergate Conference this year yeah I think they again I think they've got a chance to have a special season how special we'll find out but they too uh you know certainly work on consistency they didn't they were not very consistent in the first half the second half much different story high pass from Joya incomplete again looking for Gideon Nebo 53 seconds in the ball game third and 12 for Missouri S&T looking again at the stats for the miners Joya with 234 yards through the air so he's really slowed down his not only completion percentage but his yardage looking to go here joyya directing traffic throws it up it is in complete searching for his TI end up the near sideline red ly tried to throw that into double coverage nearly came up with it just kind of back pedaling there that's wasn't a bad pass a lot of times you throw into that double coverage you don't get it back but he put that one where his receiver had a chance to catch it fourth down and 12 and this is all she wrote for Missouri S&T it is a handoff and stopped right at the line of scrimmage wild cats will take over after the fourth down turnover and all in likelihood take a knee to end the first game of the season with a victory 49- 17 Wayne stayed Wildcats with lots of success not only offensively but defensively they were making plays left and right and you got to give a credit to Logan Masters for the work that he continues to put in at Wayne State a former standout wide receiver his third year at Wayne and he will move to 11 and one at home the only blemish here at Bob Cunningham field came last year to bigi state but since then Wayne State has won four straight they win another at home and the Wildcats start 2024 1 and0 after a dominating what you know it's a first game but certainly an impressive win what's your takeaways from this one yeah uh we played well first half I thought it was a little sluggish um offense made a couple big plays we couldn't stay on the field defense was out there too much um but kept out of the end zone for the most part and then um third quarter we came out halftime a lot better played made some big plays travus Boyd is is special and um and then it was good we got to play a lot of young guys against their starters in that fourth qu quarter and um uh they got to experience what college football's like and and how they need to prepare probably a little better this week um cuz you never know when you're going to need them so overall you get a win winnings hard and we got to play a lot of guys well they they had a big Edge in plays and time of possession in that first half and uh but yet you guys are up 14 to three yet the third quarter you really took over what was kind of the difference what you what did you say at halftime uh just that we need to execute I mean big plays are awesome never apologize for a 90 yard touchdown run but uh puts defense back out there and and um defense had chances to get off the field and we just we just didn't so um second half was much better um made plays on defense turnovers and um offense kind of took over seems like you guys even though Joya had some had some big plays had were 100 yards rushing tonight some of that was against your backups but seems like especially crucial times in the game defensively you were able to put a lot of pressure on him and make mistakes what was the key to that pressure yeah I I think just being relentless and um trusting their technique and um just trying to get after him uh I don't know how many times we probably missed him so again we can still play a heck of a lot better um and that's that's what we'll come to work tomorrow and get that all fixed so going to like points off a defense get those pick six those are those are nice oh never complain about those never defense let go back out there but no we'll never complain about that offensively uh he didn't have got of yards passing the ball but yet you look up Nick bone has three touchdown passes uh receivers making plays what what was your uh what was your takeway I guess as far as the passing game goes yeah I mean obviously we don't want the turnover with Nick but last year we threw all over them and so they played pretty soft and um basically challenged us to run it and so um we ran it and um threw it when we wanted to and that's a lot of fun that's how you get touchdowns over 250 yards rushing you feel like your ability to run the ball might be might be key this whole season to really keep this offense balanced yeah I mean great teams run the ball and stop the run and when you play up here in the Upper Midwest it's going to snow like we've seen the last couple years and um running the ball stopping the Run wi football games pretty good offensive line we're going to talk to an offensive lman here in a minute talk about jet Janson what he's meant to this program um he he's one of the pillars uh he's the one that bought into us when we were coming off of uh not what we are now and uh he he bought our recruiting sales pitch and um has really turned the tide of Wayne State football and he's a big reason why on our offense and a four-year starter Ian already graduated academic All-American I mean he's he's what you dream of absolutely well coach congratulations on a big win good luck next week as you go on you started weren't you you've been here forever what's the what's the key number one to not only start as a young guy but to uh but to stay healthy and continue that streak of of starting ball games yeah just working hard and uh we got a good training staff that keeps everybody healthy uh shout out to muffin and uh our rest of the training staff but just keep working hard and and keep your nose down and work what's been kind of the goal for the offensive line this year was mentioned over 250 yards rushing is is rushing the ball uh has that been kind of a focus for you guys um this week prer made an emphasis to us that we only ran the ball for 85 yards last year so we took that to heart and as it shows on the scoreboard uh Chris group effort Chris Tyrell will and and Jake I think we all did a good job and got more to work off of for next week well L trivia boy had an 80 yard touchdown run or 95 yard touchdown run rather uh big hole on that offensive line what do you remember about that play and how did that hole open up yeah it was a it was a gut with me and danne Peterson and I blocked my guy down Dane did a great job staying on his guy and boy found the hole and hit it hard and scored the touchdown ran as fast as he could you got a guy like uh bone at quarterback who is uh a guy that can take off and run but he's he's an excellent passer and no sacks tonight what's the key of keeping of protecting a quarterback like you that has started for four years yeah Nick does a great job back there he really understands the offense and and knows where guys are going to be at and if he feels pressure he scrambles a lot and he's a good Scrambler so keep that going well John I know a little bit about your family actually went to school with your dad uh and uh he was a great basketball player your brother is a great basketball player how did you end up being a great football player you know I I just am bigger than both of them I think so I I took the football route instead of the basketball route it's about time we had an offensive lineman as we player of the game am I right yep offensive line is uh un unth thanful position but it's a great position I think
