Media CRITICIZES Deion Sanders More Than Kamala Harris | OutKick The Show with Clay Travis

Media Expects More From Coaches Than Politicians one of the best assets you can have I think is to see across disciplines that is I love sports I'm going to talk with you about the most overrated teams in a college football era it'll get clipped everybody will love it it's not really that significant it's fun it's not that significant but there are sometimes sports related stories that cross into politics or vice versa that are significant and I thought about this morning that issue um for those of you who don't know my history I started doing spoken word out of written word I started as a writer the very first weekly radio bit that I've ever had is with my buddy Lance Taylor down in Birmingham he was on a station called jocks where Paul Fine bom was on they were the midday show leading into Paul fine bomb um and started going on with Lance like back in like 2006 never been paid now he does a show uh with Jim dunway and Ryan Brown uh they have a great show uh and I've been I've been on with LT for nearly 20 years now weekly gone on as a guest a lot of you in Birmingham area listening to me right now it's probably the first time you ever heard my voice now by the way we've got the number one Radio Show in Birmingham it's Clay and buck show not even a sports show at least not when it's football season we do really well down there appreciate all of you reason why I bring that up I would go on and talk about my written articles and that's how I found out I wasn't bad in uh in radio and then eventually um I started doing local Sports Talk Radio uh middays and then prime time uh in the drive time in the evenings and then I started doing a National Sports Talk radio show that's how I ended up looking at you right now founding out kick all those things okay reason why I bring all that up is I think that it's important to think cross discipline a lot of people focus really exclusively on one particular issue this morning I was on with LT and dunway and brown and LT asked me about the Dion controversy which has to do with the fact that Dion doesn't want to interact with a reporter that basically he believes has been too critical of his program and it's turned into a huge cont controversy that Dion would not be willing to talk to this reporter and when they asked me about it I couldn't help but make the immediate connection and think boy this is really funny isn't it the sports media is angrier at Dion Sanders for not talking to a particular member of the sports media than the national political media is at kamla Harris for not doing a single press conference or interview since she became the nominee for president of the United States and it got me thinking even more we have higher standards of media interaction requirement for football coaches both college and pro than we do for kamla Harris who's running for president of the United States so I want you to just think about this for a minute with me every college football coach and NFL coach in America has at at least two press conferences every week at least two some have more a lot of times the coach will leave practice and talk and take questions from everybody who's covering the team in addition to the normal press conferences but after every game there is a press conference head coach sits there takes questions from anybody after in the middle of a game week virtually every coach has a press conference what does it say that head coaches in college and the NFL are required to answer questions and interact with the media and explain themselves more than kamla Harris who is the Democrat Contender to be president of the United States what's more important that Dion Sanders be grilled by some random dude covering his team in Denver or that the would be president of the United States actually have to answer questions and what does it say about our current media environment that Dion Sanders is being criticized more heavily by Sports media for not taking questions from every single media member than kamla Harris is for not taking a single question in a press conference or doing an interview with any media outlet for over a month how is it that we expect more media access from our football coaches than we do our presidential candidate that's pretty wild and I wouldn't have thought about it I don't think if I didn't have the the background that I do in sports and in politics now we hold Dion Sanders to a higher standard of media access and behavior in Colorado than we do KLA Harris and she's running for president the United States I'd love to hear somebody refute that I think it is a fascinating dichotomy in the way the media behaves Dion is one of the most Deion Sanders Needs To Prove Itself fascinating questions of the 2024 year now last year correct me if I'm wrong Adam I think Colorado went 4- eight they came in last place in the Pack 12 now they are in the Big 12 they have completely remade their roster in the off season tons of additions in in particular on the offensive line where they weren't able to protect shadur Sanders last year he' got a lot of sacks he dropped back to pass at way too high of a rate they've got a brand new running back out of Ohio State dalen Hayden uh who they think is going to be pretty solid uh they have remade their offensive line including five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton which kind of came out of nowhere but the question is what sort of Step if any is Colorado going to take towards being a bigger better storyline than what they were last year last year they were super hyped came out in one what did they win their first did they win their first four games last year I can't even remember uh I know that the ratings were off the chart if I remember correctly they beat in order see if I get this right Adam they beat TCU they beat Nebraska then did they beat Colorado State or was there another team kind of rolled in there um and then they basically fell apart and lost everything in the 12 including pretty staggering loss to Stanford where if I remember correctly they were up like 29 to nothing and found a way to lose that football game a lot of people believe that Dion is going to leave after this year because Shiloh his son in the secondary and shador his quarterback uh both of his sons are not going to be back next year and so there's a question about how much he's building Colorado for the long term lots of new coaches they also have now put in place um a uh recruiting class that almost doesn't exist uh they're by and large going out and grabbing all these transfers and so they're not necessarily building it correctly uh sorry they I got the first three games right there from Colorado uh they won against Arizona State they lost two was that Oregon and USC uh is that the first five games and then they beat AR Arizona State and then they lost the rest of the games that year again this is off the top of my head that's what I recall last year as a college football fan uh Adam will check me and and let me know if that's right uh that is right that's the way the season went they finished uh with a disastrous uh last place record in the Pack 12 um I think they get North Dakota State although I think again that line tells you hey North Dakota State's really good and North Dakota state is not going out to Boulder to play in a game against Colorado and try to just keep it close or try to just score a couple of touchdowns the reason why I'm taking shador Sanders to throw for more than 304 uh and uh 304 and a half yards passing is because I don't think that they are going uh to blow out North Dakota State and be able to pull shador Sanders and play a lot of backups I think they're going to be in a uh in a track meet I think they're going to have to score a lot of points I don't believe that much in their defense uh and I think shador Sanders given that Dion would like for him to contend for the Heisman trophy is going to have to post big numbers in any game that they win even with an improved offensive line and an improved running game so uh that's my take on Dion I actually like Dion I've liked Dion my whole life um I respected him when he played for the Atlanta Braves and when he played for uh the Atlanta Falcons I like his confidence I like his brashness I like his Swagger but now in year two is when that has to translate into onfield wins what do I mean by that I judge a coach by his performance in year two a lot of times in year one if you have the right coach you get a sign a game where the team plays way better than you expect and you kind of raise your eyebrows a bit and you say oh this is interesting oh I didn't expect this but you'll also have some poor performances because it's hard to change a culture in one year year two is when you find out what whether your coach is the guy or not and I've used this stat for a long time no SEC Champion coach has ever uh won the SEC Championship without winning at least nine games by year two think about how Wild that is most really good SEC football coaches by year two have won nine games doesn't mean that they're taking over a great incredible situation a but by year two they are able to win nine football games now I don't think Colorado is going to win nine football games this year but I do think that they should make a substantial Improvement and be Bowl eligible in year two for sure if Deion Sanders is going to take Colorado on that pathway to continuing to build ESPN Embarrassment Excellence I like Deion Sanders let me say this I I've enjoyed watching him play I was talking about it yesterday um I think shador ERS very good player Shiloh standers plays on the edge uh got a personal foul had a couple of other hits that could have been personal fouls I thought but I don't begrudge a player who plays on the edge Dion seems to be a very good dad to me his kids seem to really like him I think that matters as a dad but uh ESPN's got to do something about Mark Jones the slobbering from Mark Jones inside of the Press Box for Dion Sanders is uncomfortable and if I'm a North Dakota State fan or a fan of any team that is playing against Colorado it's like you're listening to the hometown radio announced team as opposed to a national broadcast team now look I don't have a great deal of uh like at this point for Mark Jones I think he used to be a pretty talented guy I think that social media and uh the emotional aspect of it broke him this is a guy who said he would no longer accept police escorts after the George Floyd situation because he said he was afraid the police would kill him this is not a stable man and I think social media has broken him and in some way he has decided that he has to be basically a crazy partisan calling Deon Sanders games I think it's probably race related I think it's embarrassing for ESPN that they still employ that guy and they fired a lot of other more talented more respected uh people in the world of sports media they got to take him off Colorado games I know they keep demoting him and keep giving him less important games but I have not heard a national announcer slobber over a one team like that maybe in my life and I'm sure ESPN Executives were watching it I don't see how that wasn't embarrassing to them if I'm in North Dakota a State fan I'm like dude I'm just trying to watch the game I don't need to hear you telling me that Deion Sanders is the greatest coach that's ever lived even Dion Sanders I think would be embarrassed by the lack of gag reflex from Mark Jones when it comes to how he calls Dion games again I'm a Dion fan I like Dion I like the fact that he's spoken out I don't have any issue with him not wanting to talk to Media members as I said earlier this week and we need to clip and share that the fact that Deion Sanders is being criticized more for how he responds to Media as a college football coach than kamla Harris and Tim Walls are as president and vice presidential contenders is wild to me the sports media is angrier at Deion Sanders over his behavior on interviews and his press conferences than they are with the fact that kamla and walls won't talk to anyone which I think is funny so I'm on Dion's side here I don't know why he needs to talk to anybody that he doesn't need to talk to doesn't want to talk to he's going to be judged by wins and losses on the field but the slobbering The anti-gag Reflex behavior of Mark Jones is frankly unacceptable Unbecoming and embarrassing for ESPN and they should not allow him to call any more Dion games based on how he uh how he behaved last night actually took away for my enjoyment of the behavior of Travis Hunter and shador Sanders uh again I think Dion's team's likely to go five- seven or six and six I think that's probably their ceiling uh and then we'll see what happens because Travis Hunter and shador are probably both going to be first round draft picks or close to it um maybe people decide they don't like shador over the course of the Season uh and we'll see how many quarterbacks are taken in the first round in this upcoming season that obviously factors in uh when you look at the draft next season uh but I think shador Sanders um looks improved bigger stronger problem is I don't think the offensive and defensive lines are much improved and I'm not sure how how or whether Dion is building for the long term
