the practices are heating up at Alabama and it's time to wrap up Jimmy Stein's world famous roster countdown with 3 2 [Music] 1 you are locked on B your daily podcast on the Alabama Crimson Tide part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hey everybody welcome back in lockdown Bama HSA radio network Luke Robinson that's me B on lines Jimmy Stein that's him thanks for making this your first second third fourth listen every single day we appreciate you every day here we appreciate you newbies this episode is brought to you by FanDuel and today we wrap up the world famous roster countdown and boy I just got a sneak peek and there's a shocker in here folks we'll get to it in the next couple of segments but Jimmy we've got to get back into practice Alabama had practiced this morning in tuscalo of course it'd be weird if they had it somewhere else uh but uh it's junction junction they zipped over to Junction Texas but it does feel like Junction Texas out there I mowed my grass at like 8:30 this morning and I mean I'm just I was sweating like you wouldn't believe now I got high blood pressure and everything else but it doesn't matter it's hot and uh so yeah it's got to be tough times out there during practice but what' you see today yeah me and Charlie Potter from Bo went out to the practice field and uh you know today we made concerted effort this is our fourth day of covering practice and and uh sometimes we split things up so Charlie covers some things and I cover others but uh but today we stuck together uh we went to The Far Side for the first time it's a little bit of a walk and the problem with it I mean you know everyone's gonna have a different opinion and it's hard to have an opinion when you're not there to see the setup but you know some things are right in front of us and some things are on the far side you can walk over there but we only have a certain amount of time time so if if you're walking on the far side to go see things you don't normally see you could miss some things and the clock is ticking man you've only got so much so so much time but we did decide to walk the far side because we wanted a better look at the quarterbacks and receivers which generally are on the far side of the field for us stopping along the way we saw corners and safeties were different and uh but anyway uh talk chronologically the first thing we saw which was new uh based on what we've seen in the viewing periods was they actually had an offense on the field that that was the first time that they had done that had all 11 lined up out there Milow at quarterback a first team offensive line a little bit of surprised Kaden Proctor was with the ones that left tackle for the first time uh that we saw but is it a surprise I mean you knew well he was he wasn't out there the first couple of days we've talked about it's coming yeah exactly so we knew that would I was just a little surprised in the sense of wow what are we in practice for yeah there is but uh Kaylin debor later talked about and and Chris cap kelvic yesterday with the media said you scared I'm I'm not a Chris uh coach cap said you know hey I'm not against rotating at tackles if all all the guys if all three guys show they can handle it and and and and it's a beneficial to the team I'll rotate um anyway Proctor was with the ones milro with the quarterbacks you know uh I wouldn't read too deeply into this but when milro was out there Justice a was the back when when milro came out uh Jam Miller was the back with Tai Simpson uh when Tai came out and it was the third group it was Austin Mack with Richard young at running back and when Lan came in with the fourth group it was Daniel Hill so uh that that sort of lines up based on what you would expect uh walked over and watched quite a bit of the cornerbacks Sabian Brown has a little soft cast on his left wrist that's interesting but but it didn't keep him out of a single drill he he he he he he missed nothing he wasn't in a you know he he's just practicing just like all the other Corners he just has a little cast on his uh left wrist he looks great by the way and bway is a guy noticed when you go through the drills and you're that close and you can hear the coaching uh in bway is a guy that consistently got good marks from mool linguist mool linguist was like every time like hey good rep Bach good rep uh he's seems to be doing really well uh with the safety group the guy that stood out to me today like like the the safety that was like wow is Keon sap I mean he looks like a million bucks to me as a matter of fact if you like what does an SEC safety look like Keon I mean now he's long he's not super thick but he's long his build reminds me a little bit at the same age of HaHa Clinton Dicks I mean he's just kind of long super Sleek he gets to the ball effortlessly in those Ball Hawk drills uh man he I thought Keon Sab like a million bucks and finally made it to the quarterbacks throwing to the receiver group and of course all eyes on Ryan Williams and all I say is Ryan just my my favorite thing to say watching that wide receiver Group which I'm just adamant about if no one knew the numbers and you didn't know the hair and so you didn't you couldn't pick them at so if you didn't know who was who and you're just watching the wide receivers run routes and catch balls and I told you one of these guys is a 12th grader and the rest of them are college football players there's no way you would pick out number two Ryan as the high school player I mean he he's just cat quick looks the part he's taller than some of the other receivers by the way when some people say Ryan's kind of small well he's he's wiry but uh he's not short out there at all the other receivers are shorter than Ryan uh but man he he's just super cat quick um I thought he looked good and if a receiver stood out to me today in the brief period of saw I would say jiren Hamilton uh probably a guy we're not paying enough attention to uh just an an another guy who looks really good in and out of his breaks and then of course kayin dbor spoke with the media after practice and he had a lot of interesting things to say including he was raving about Jaylen milro said that since he's been here you know and dbor has been here through 15 spring practices now four fall practic it says since he's been here milro has been better the last two days than he's been at any point he's wow he's uh really the last two days and specifically pointed out that his deep ball was really good today uh and again a lot of that happens when the media's not there we we had a shorter uh media viewing period it certainly seemed to me today maybe it was because of the long walk but uh I would say we got less than 15 minutes today you know one word keeps coming up when you read about or you listen to uh the practice reaction or even the coaches talk about it and that word is energy and yeah I just it's so unique because I mean I'm sure Sabin said it I'm sure it was said I just don't remember that ever being a part of Sabin practices again please people really get confused with this nobody is saying that the board practices are better than Sabin sabin's sabin's method is tried and true what we're saying is it's just different to have energy be one of the words to describe it when one thing I want to ask you Jimmy because you've seen enough now you've been to a few of the practices or just about all of them um four okay so is it as structured meaning you know in the past when you if the whistle blew or the horn sounded or whatever um the the positions the groupings moved immediately and and uh directly yeah or is is it that kind of structure is it a little looser no no it's it's it's structured similar to uh now I've been to saving practices now saving practi have been open the media for a while but I had been to saving practices uh I would say they're structured similarly uh and know there's not a lot of downtime um it's it's very organized uh the periods are every roughly five minutes there's a new the horn blows and and all the players know exactly where to go to the next period and and it's structured and organized this is an overe exaggeration to make a point so keep in mind an over exaggeration to make a point I would say saving practices felt very NFL like if you went and saw the uh Cleveland Browns practice and then saw Alabama practice you would think you're watching the same league yeah I mean there I thought Alabama practices C St were very NFL like which I'm sure was by Design and a good thing uh debor practices are more High School like and by that I just mean the youthful energy there's a youthful energy that maybe wasn't there before because it was very button down and pro football like before and uh you know and again what I want to stress is different not better not oh they do it so much better now I'm not saying that I'm just saying they do it different now and and and it comes across as again youthful energy like you're watching a high school team like these kids are so excited to be out there where as opposed to the Sabin thing it was very button down now we'll say this about the excitement I should have written this on Bo I just remembered this and I didn't write it in my Bo practice report but just kind of a cool moment that I think everybody when I say hey pretty neat to be there at practice today uh again we walk to the far side of the field the speakers are over there where they play the music so the music hadn't been as loud because the speakers are on the far side in terms of like standing right in front of so we walked to the far Far Side directly in front of the speaker and as soon as we got to The Far Side as soon as we got to okay here comes the quarterbacks they're going to throw to the receivers new song starts up it's thunder struck they they ACDC the song they come out to so thunder struck right behind my ear you know so it's kind of concert loud there's milro throwing to Ryan Williams and and Jeremy Bernard and I'm like oh no this is cool this is cool Jimmy it is time for us to wrap up your world famous roster countdown because it's also time to get in the mea practice I'm so excited I'm sad that it's ending but you know what don't be glad it's O don't be what is it don't be sad it's over be glad it happened and that's what we're gonna do right after this and I'm sorry I know I'm not supposed to say right after this I messed that up that's on me don't blame Jimmy but you can dock podcast it's part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day so Jimmy here we are number three uh right here on your world famous roster countdown drum roll and go Deontay Lawson you know in so many ways it's uh it's Jaylen milrose offense I think the defense belongs to Malachi Moore and Deontay Lawson uh Deontay uh and this comes across when I watch him in practice of course I I put together this list before practice even started uh but but when I watched Deontay LW in at practice the first word that comes to mind every every time is pro a professional he he carries himself now like a professional because he's in year four uh he has really been a starter since he showed up now he got hurt his true fresh year uh but he was playing linebacker as a true freshman uh and then was hurt after the second game and missed probably six seven eight gam so he end up red shirting that year because he only played in four games but he was gonna play in every game all season long at linebacker so really this is a guy that has played off the bus uh he struggled to stay healthy I mean that's a that's a theme and a pattern with with loss when he plays he's great but he's not out there all the time because he has been hurt but uh right now he's totally healthy carries himself like a pro he's a real leader uh to me his comp is CJ Mosley he reminds me a lot of CJ they're partly from the same time same town maybe it's because Lawson were number 32 a lot until he changed to zero this year uh one of the great on this team do you like him being zero to be honest to be honest no and that's just because I'm old man shaking my fist at the clouds about all the players changing their numbers for instance today we notice they give us a roster sometimes you know for for practice and and just to confirm but miles McVey is number 58 now he he was wearing 54 and now miles McVey is wearing 58 and we're like why but whatever so the players changing numbers I I'm not a big fan of period so maybe that's why but it has nothing to do with wearing zero I'm just like Deontay Lawson he's number 32 you know to me but uh what a pro plays the run plays the pass gets after the passer he's a leader he's probably going to have his name in the sidewalk when the season's over uh great player and and again this is his front seven he makes the the calls and uh I'm just really excited to see what it might look like if Deontay is healthy all season long we're gonna see the best Lawson we've seen and uh Hey inside linebackers aren't treated well in the draft but I think Lawson is going to make a run at the first round you're number two Jimmy I thought everybody in the world have this number one yeah but I go for it tell everybody yeah I have Jay I have jayen milro at two and not one and uh hey it's just this one simple reason uh and I thought about it a lot uh and I'm a big milro fan by the way I I think mil's got a real good chance to win the Heisman Trophy I think he's going to be in the Heisman race all year long and if I have a prediction I'm not gonna say he's gonna win it but I think milro will be a finalist I think he'll be in New York City at the end of the year which is fantastic but in the end I went with Tyler Booker over milro for this one reason I I think Tyler Booker is the best guard in college football I think he's the number one guard in this sport I think he was gonna go in the first round despite being a guard so a first round pick best guard in the sport over one of the best quarterbacks who might be a first round pick I I just went with Booker just simply because to me it's more it's more definitive in my mind that Booker's the best guard in college football I wouldn't say jayen milrose is the best quarterback in college football I think he's on the short list I think he's one of the best uh and I wouldn't bet significant money right now that milro will go in the first round uh but I probably would with Booker uh so I I went with Tyler Booker uh as a guy that I think I feel plays his position better than any kid on the team plays their position excluding special team okay but you gave us the Tyler Booker rundown I need you to give me the jayen milro Jaylen milro rundown sure uh Dynamic great uh you know what what what I think look I think a lot of the knocks on milro are the same knocks people have about any Young quarterback you know he's got to make decisions F he's got to process faster doesn't always make the right call sometimes holds on the ball too long these are things that all young quarterbacks do and we didn't talk about enough last year Jaya milro entered last season the least experienced quarterback in the entire SEC the least experienced so of course he was going to make the most youthful errors which he did at times but we also saw every week the kid got better and better and better and better and he's continu to get better in the off season to the point that again I I think he's going to be a significant player in the Heisman race uh I fully expect to see him in New York at the end of this season I think he's going to make a run at the first round of the draft uh a and I think he'll be improved he'll be one year better now is he going to be so good that all the critics are going to disappear no no they'll still be because he's a college quarterback and they're putting a lot on him by the way this is big last year I felt Tommy Reese and Nick sain try to take a lot off of milro this year dbor and Sheridan they're gonna put it on milro so there's a lot more on him and I think he's going to hold up great it won't be perfect though all the time it won't it's still it's still going to frustrate people at times but overall the playmaking the dynamic uh the Dynamic Athlete I know people love to talk about the legs but I'm gonna talk about him as a passer because I think first and foremost Jaylen milro is gonna hurt people this year as a passer uh it's a better offense for him in terms of throwing the ball I think his receiver group as a whole there's a group that's better I you know last year you had Bond and Burton who are good players I like the group five or six guys that will all be difficult to cover and uh I'm a big fan of the staff and what they do for quarterbacks and what they did for Michael pennick uh in his career so I think milro is gonna have a spectacular uh junior season and I think he's gonna go pro when the year's over and we'll see if he falls in the first round or day two but either way I mean Jaylen Herz went day two how's that working out for him you know and I I've sort of always compared milro to Herz I think there's a lot of similarity between the two there's differences also but I think there's so many similarities I've often compared them and I think NFL wise they're almost similar and Herz went win on day two I wouldn't be surprised if milr is more like a second round pick um but you're a good quarterback if you're going second round of the draft and would I be shocked if you win the first round no in retrospect Herz should have been a first- round pick in retrospect all right I'm gonna keep talking about these two in the next segment because I got a couple of things to add to what you just said sure of course I'm going to tell you about FanDuel though FanDuel is the best look I love sports I love them so much I never want them to stop but as the playoffs have already winded down wound down whatever you want to say we get fewer games and the sports aren't sportsing like I want them to but FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want all I have to do is open the app and dream up any bet I want anytime I'm in the mood and this summer FanDuel is up all y'all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that's right there's something for everybody every day all summer long so head on over to fanduel.com and start making the most of your summer what's left of it FanDuel of course is an official sports betting partner of major Le okay so you said they're going to put more on milro this year I agree with you um now there is a side of me that says I'm a little I've got some trepidation sure there's a side of me that's Intrepid and uh I used both words there um the the side that with trepidation is hey it felt like he didn't make the right read when he didn't have enough on it right know last year but the Intrepid part of me is like sometimes when you let somebody know you have confidence in them it unlocks something with yes and here's the other thing jayen milro has made the media circuit he has been on CBS This Morning he's been on all these various ESPN shows he has been and we've talked about this in past podcast he has been an amazing Ambassador for Alabama and sometimes when you watch somebody Deshawn Foster comes to mind when he got up to the podium the other day and literally said you know I don't know what to tell y'all other than UCLA's in Los Angeles you know it can't help but strip away some confidence you had in this man I'm not saying he's not not going to be a good coach he certainly could be but if you saw that and you're like I like him even more as a coach you might like him as a person because he showed a realness about it you might not like you cannot like him more as a coach necessarily because we haven't even seen him be a head coach yet and now he does this and you're like um what are you gonna do when it's we need you know it's Fourth and two and we've got to decide if we want to go for it or kick it with three seconds left you know what I mean so um I don't know I it's sort of like watching Mike dubose's first press conference I knew in that moment like hindsight's 2020 but I knew in that moment uh oh we're in trouble of course Fanboy Luke at the time was like ah he's just you know he's just so full of amama um but when I saw mill going around making his talks and and you know said being his himself all I saw was a dude who's Uber comfortable in his own skin welcoming the challenge I mean he wasn't up there just you know looking like a professional wrestler but he if anybody came at him with a question he was ready it wasn't a um well like you know it wasn't any of that milro is a talker and a dang good one well I think it's just confidence you know last year at this time he wasn't even sure he was going to be the quarterback you know he was in a competition that didn't resolve itself into the fourth game of the season now it's unquestionably jaylen's team it's his offense they're building it around him he said so yesterday in his time with the media yesterday he like yeah they're they're building this around me I'm not sure we did that last year until the sixth or seventh game frankly I I I blame a lot of that on on Tommy Reese uh myself I mean in terms of like I think it was a failure on on Alabama's part uh not to have it built around milro earlier uh but once they did we we saw the offense really take off uh and now I think D'Or and Sheridan are probably masters of this right building it around Jaylen and what Jaylen does so uh I'm excited to see what this confidence brings about he threw it 23 times a game last year Luke I think that's a key number here there were 23 passes a game what's it going to look like when there's about 34 which is my number that I'm predicting for this fall about 34 times a game we're going to see milro throw it uh and that's going to make him a lot more productive in terms of obviously completions and and yardage and even touchdowns um you know and there could be more inter I mean if you throwing it you know uh what amounts to 33% more of the time uh you know there's probably going to be 33% more of everything including picks uh but that's fine it's how you bounce back uh you know even Josh Allen throw throws interceptions I mean it's about how you bounce back from that and uh I'm I'm excited about the quarterback position last year we were nervous last year this time we we should have been nervous about how it was going to work out this year there's a confidence uh that uh that I think we should have in Jaylen milro and he certainly has in himself and again a quarterback is a lot how they play around you and the offensive line was more shaky year ago I think the better offensive Line's going to help him the deeper wide receiver cores can help him having better Talent at running back and not a knock against Jason Rory Dell as a fan base I think we really didn't didn't uh uh uh admire them enough for what they did but I also at the same time admit Justice and jam are a little bit better with the ball in their hands uh I think all those things are going to serve jayen well and I'll take it a step further if you told me we for sure get Jace or and Roy Dell back or take our chances with Justice jam and Richard I'm taking Justice jamond Richard it's while Ro three versus two either I think it's while royell left I'm trying to be kind to royell who by the way I mean I I recently watched the Georgia re I'm not sure we' win the game without royell Williams Oh No Doubt Georgia I mean Roy Dell was a huge part of Alabama's SEC Championship and making the playoff but at the same time Roy Dell left because it was time for the justice and jam show and that's why left and I wish him well I hope he does well and I bet he does do well I do too I think you will do well and I'll say this too another thing I like about having Tyler Booker and Jaylen milroe is your one and two respectively I love the leadership Dynamic what it reminds me of a little bit is Chris Samuels and Shan Alexander those two were the unquestion leaders of the team the best two on the team I mean there were some other good players on that Squad I mean Freddy millins was on that Squad I mean there were some good players but by the way we kind of missed Freddy millins when we were talking about the non Sabin team you know I'm not sure I would have I'm not sure I would if but but he was worth agree that was one we missed he was we missed that yeah we missed that I'm not 100% sure to put him on that's a great great catch by you and the people that listen to the show appreciate that but uh Booker I still have as number one because again here here's my thinking and people feel free to dis there's nothing more right for disagreement than ranking 866 players of course yall are going to disagree of course and that's great but I put Booker one because I think Booker's the best guard in all of college football and milro is not unquestionably the best quarterback in all of college football because you have Carson Beck who I think is gonna be the first pick in the draft uh Quinn Ur is also I think outstanding there's other quarterbacks that are really good players too milr is in the argument he's in the debate uh in my mind there's no debate Tyler Booker is the best guard in college football fair and that's a fair way to do it except I would say but quarterback is weighted so much more heavily that you can be the 10th best quarterback in the country and be better than the first best guard I mean that's that's the only thing I and milro may win the Heisman to me I'm an objective go by the trophy G milro wins the Heisman I'll be the first one back here boy I was wrong I should have put milro but this is preseason so you get to rerank it at the end of the season if we want to do that and we will do something like that and of course there'll be another ranking when the season's over uh you know we'll we'll rank again before next spring uh you know best players on the 2025 team next spring and he milro could come back I don't think he will I think and it's because again I'm so confident I think milro is gonna play well enough to where there's going to be a fun is he day one or is he day two discussion with Jayla milro in the NFL draft that that's my prediction and uh and boy anybody taking that as something other than a compliment is just uh going too far I I I think he I think it'll be a fun discussion day one or day two for milro and I I think he'll go uh if he comes back I I would obviously be excited because how good could he be in 2025 well look thanks for making lock on B me your first or second or third listen today now go check out locked on college football love that podcast uh from nil deals to never
