DEATH. >> HAS BEEN OVER 2 MONTHS SINCE A WATER MAIN BROKE ON GRAND RAPIDS. THE EAST SIDE THAT IMPACTED SOME 200 HOMES NOW MONTHS LATER ARE NEIGHBORS IN THAT AREA ARE WORKING. STILL THE PICK UP THE PIECES WITH NO FINANCIAL HELP FROM THE CITY. NEWS EIGHT'S ADRIANA DORIAN JOINING US LIVE FROM PHILADELPHIA AVENUE IN GRAND RAPIDS WITH THE LATEST. AND WHAT NEIGHBORS ARE SAYING IS UNACCEPTABLE. ADRIANNA. >> BRIAN NEIGHBORS HERE. TELL ME THEY HAVE 10'S OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGES AND THEY ARE JUST LOOKING FOR SOME FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. SO WHAT THEY DID WAS WHAT ANYONE WOULD DO. THEY SENT A CLAIM TO THE CITY. THEY SUBMITTED IT LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO. AND TODAY THEY RECEIVED THIS LETTER IN THE MAIL FROM THE CITY DENYING THEIR CLAIMS SAYING THAT THE CITY WAS NOT GOING TO BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE AND THEY WERE NOT LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE TO HELP OUT FINANCIALLY. YOU CAN SEE THE STATEMENT HERE ON THE SCREEN, THE CITY STATEMENT GOES ON TO SAY THAT THE CITY IS, QUOTE, NOT IS ENTITLED TO STATUTORY IMMUNITY FOR DAMAGES TO PROPERTY UNLESS ONE OF 6 NARROW EXCEPTIONS APPLIES. THEY GO ON TO SAY WE HAVE DETERMINED THAT GOVERNMENTAL IMMUNITY DOES APPLY IN THIS CASE AND THAT THE CITY IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE DAMAGES THAT YOU HAVE DESCRIBED. WE MUST THEREFORE RESPECTFULLY DENY YOUR CLAIM WE HAVE REACHED OUT TO THE CITY TO SEE WHAT THESE EXCEPTIONS ARE. THEY SAY THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING MATTER AND THEY CANNOT COMMENT ON THAT. BUT IN THE LETTER THEY CITE THAT A WATER MAIN BREAK IS NOT PART OF THOSE EXCEPTIONS. THE CITY ALSO SAID THAT THEY RECOMMEND PEOPLE HERE REACH OUT TO THEIR INSURANCE COMPANIES. BUT NEIGHBORS THAT I SPOKE TO SAY THAT THEY DID THAT AND THEY WERE DENIED BECAUSE. >> THIS IS CITY PROPERTY AND THEREFORE INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE NOT GOING TO COVER THAT. AND I WANT TO TELL YOU, SCOTT AND STEPHANIE HALL ARE JUST SOME OF THE NEIGHBORS HERE THAT WE TALKED TO AND THIS IS THEIR CAR RIGHT HERE. PARK IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT THAT IT WAS THAT DAY. AND YOU CAN SEE HERE. >> DIRT RESIDENT SHOWING HOW HIGH THIS WATER GOT. THEY SAY THIS IS A REMINDER. THEY HAVE TO LOOK AT EVERY SINGLE DAY WHEN THEY WANT TO GET INTO THEIR CAR AND REMINDER OF ALL OF THE STRUGGLES THAT THEY'VE EXPERIENCED THESE PAST 2
