from Guardian Sports and guardian caps Guardian caps the soft shell padded helmets join us today right here to discuss player safety and will these protective helmets be worn soon in the National Hockey League it's coming up ahead right here on this edition of lock down Golden Nights your locked on Golden Nights your daily podcast on the Vegas Golden Nights part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day well hi again everyone Tony cordasco Chris gock from Las Vegas thanks for making us your first listen each and every day find us wherever get your podcast please make sure that you subscribe to our lockdown Golden Nights YouTube channel we are brought to you today by FanDuel go to fanduel.com and you've heard us talk a lot about FanDuel it is America's number one sports book we have a lot of questions for today guest and joining us from Atlanta as you see there on the left Mike Crawford and Jake Hansen on the right from Guardian Sports Guardian caps and for we've got a lot of questions fellas uh for the first time this NFL season players are now allowed to wear Guardian caps and games and in fact five players from the Indianapolis Colts wore Guardian caps in one preseason game and the NFL says wearing these paded caps will be cutting down on concussions by 50% and we want to begin by saying well first of all I'm a proponent and I advocate you know players in hockey on every level starting with youth hockey to be wear wearing these padded protective hats and uh we welcome our guest uh today uh Mike Crawford Vice President of Sales coo Jake Hansen uh both from guardians Sports and uh I wanted to ask I'd like to know about Guardian caps and its penetration currently in the hockey world yeah no thanks Tony thanks for having us on thanks Chris um so Guardian caps um why don't I give you just a little bit of background on how we started and maybe then we can get into how we've expanded into the hockey space and how we want to take this technology into New Heights sure perfect so we are an offshoot of a material science company uh called the Hansen Group which was founded in 1996 that company uh was responsible for solving big hairy problems for companies like 3M BASF the US military so we made things such as self-sealing fuel tanks and still make them self-sealing fuel tanks bulletproof glass um rock climbing holds uh and golf ball covers for Max Fly tailor made um in Vice golf what happened is that company was responsible for problem solving so we had a group of doctors come and approach us with a soft shell helmet that they wanted to replace the original hard shell plastic football helmets when my parents Aon and Lee started the that project um they took it up to the NFL and ultimately it was too much too fast at the time you were still having shows like jacked up on ESPN and people wanted to hear that loud loud crack of the helmets seeing two guys knock each other out it was a different time at that same point I had started to play football um and they were also approached by a number of former NFL athletes Jerome Bettis Tim Lester Mark Kelo Freddy mccre who said you guys have to keep going you have to keep pushing for something that can change the current hard shell plastic landscape so that's when they went to their kitchen table and they mocked up the guardian cap they sketched it out and they wanted to say instead of creating a soft shell helmet that's super expensive what if we created a one-size fits-all $40 product that can fit on any helmet now at the time I was playing High School football and my parents were essentially selling the guardian cap out of the back of their car embarrassing the hell out of me uh making me look like the the bubble boy that was uh playing football my parents were were chick and little saying the sky was falling you've got CTE concussions people need to worry about this it wasn't until the landscape of football and what people started to understand about the brain and traumas that people began to take notice they slowly pushed it in youth eventually picking up Clemson in South Carolina and then in 2017 at the Landmark of the CTE lawsuit and TBI lawsuit with the NFL um they were able to win the NFL head health Tech Challenge at that point they received additional um funding for testing specifically um and it kind of Grew From there that's where they were picked up by Alabama Georgia the SEC and then in 2021 for the first time they uh were picked up by the NFL by six different NFL teams uh actually at that time the reason the NFL picked it up is not even just for the impact reduction and for concussions but because the Rams Matt Stafford over rotated on a pass cracked his thumb on he hit his thumb right yeah yeah uhuh exactly so they wanted to use it for hand protection so after that in 2022 the NFL for the first time mandated Guardian caps for offensive and defensive lineman saw a 52% reduction in preseason concussions by implementing the guardian cap and transparently what what that kind of led to is a further mandate in 2023 a further mandated in 2024 but ultimately it was a validation of the knowledge that they had known the whole time that you have to replace these hard shell plastic helmets because what they do a great job of is preventing skull fractures what they don't do a great job of is that internal dynamics that offset from the hit and that impact reduction when you're talking about the soft shell matter of the brain W so leading us to the NHL and okay we have a Matt Stafford situation probably in the NHL Keegan kisar we don't want him to hurt his thumb when he's throwing a punch yeah that's true hey honestly if you get a guy uh getting in a fight um out at NFL Training Camps I mean we saw what was it with the uh the Giants and guys fighting all the time so hey there's just one added benefit to it you can protect your hands why not you had uh Justin fields and Russell Wilson going at in Pittsburgh the other day hopefully uh they were properly protected um so my question um I coach a youth hockey team out here and me and Tony we did our did a segment about Guardian caps and admittedly at the time I didn't even know that you can use these in the hockey world I didn't know that there was a hockey version of the product um we're going through and I think just like you guys saw we do the Open Tony chats for a second I'm literally Googling off to the side I'm like oh okay there's Guardian caps for hockey so I obviously got a lot more excited about the segment obviously so my question is along those lines um what is Guardian Sports doing for the visibility factor to get people like me who is a youth hockey coach in in the Las Vegas Community what is Guardian doing from an awareness perspective and is this something that some Pro Shops will ever carry or is this online only what's Guardian doing to increase visibility for youth hockey in communities around the country North America I should say yeah first off we're going on the top podcasts on in the entire world you know just to tell our story you know like yourselves so um we just in January you read the email thank you so much brother hey guys and and can we also get some of that bulletproof glass that you make that sometimes it gets rough around here gets really rough well we just released the hockey got this January so um we're very new to it um it's just the exact same concept as the football helmet it's just retrofitted to fit a hockey helmet um and so we're hoping it'll take less than 12 years like it did for football to get in um so far it's been very well received at all the shows that we've been at um and you know it makes a ton of sense right in reality you guys hockey players are uh the toughest players athletes out there pound-for-pound um um but again you know you got to protect your head and so you can be as tough as you want but you know concussions come for everybody um and so we're excited to to continue to spread the word about our hockey cap and and make improvements as well um as we get more experience in the hockey field yeah it it's early and you said uh January is when this first started for hockey is the are there conversations happening with the NHL or any other professional leagues or is it too early for that it's a little early at the moment we've gone to plenty of shows and had conversations with uh with the Kings with the Caps a couple different teams just with individual Personnel that have come by our booth um just to talk about it and honestly the the reaction has been man I didn't know you guys made this for hockey and transparently yeah exactly it's it's pretty new overall um so right now we're in the middle of football season we're continuing to invest in our hockey space um but yeah we're always open to additional conversations as you can see we've got a cap that fits your traditional full kit and your half kit so you've got something that works here um we just haven't had the door open yet to the NHL but definitely something that we'd love to to explore can I put you guys on the spot right now sure sure why not how easy are those to take on and off of the helmet very easy I would say yeah can you turn that on the side too so we can show our viewers yeah just to see cuz a lot of the hits happen on the side of the head as we see in the NHL they say in the National Hockey League they've reported 80 only 80 concussions reported reported per season that's a lot that's way too many but we know that there's got to be more blows to the head just curious to see the side of the head and then how do they fit on the helmet and I have another question too do you make them for goal tenders because those guys get popped we've had two goalies here in Las Vegas uh come up with concussions yeah yeah so it's same concept as football so it's one size fits all and that includes goalies um the biggest thing with the goalies is the face mask is a lot tighter on to the helmet so you might have to loosen the screws a little bit to add it um but again we're new to it so we're going to make some product improvements going forward um where we'll make the the straps on the front um not have buttons like they do for football um because we believe like it'll still stay on with the velcro just only the velcro um but there's a strap in the back that you can tighten so um it'll fit any helmet so I was able to take that off in about 20 seconds yeah was easy yeah part is it doesn't actually impact the helmet whatsoever so if a player for example I mean we weren't expecting getting to game day for the NFL so if this just becomes a practice device and they need to go out there and they need to wear this for a game you can have it on and off in 20 seconds wow that's pretty good uh we're going to take a break here and then we'll return with more we have so many questions we appreciate you guys being with us uh Jay Hansen the COO Mike Crawford Vice President of Sales for Guardian Sports back with Mar right after this on lockdown Golden Nights you've heard us talk a lot about FanDuel it's America's number one sport book don't forget uh the Raiders are home this weekend you could bet on them there's Major League Baseball a lot happening out there so make sure that you visit fanduel.com lockon and you can download America's number one Sportsbook back on this edition of lock it's pretty good technically Mr gock back on this edition of lockdown Golden Nights Tony cordasco Chris gock from Las Vegas we appreciate you making us your first listen each and every day don't forget on Fridays that's tomorrow WTF with all of your comments out there and we could use that bulletproof glass for that segment uh Jake Hanson joining us the COO of Guardian Sports along with vice president Mike Crawford and uh Chris go ahead you could jump in with your next question Mike you're the you're the sales guy right you're the one that's uh out there pitching this or you have a group of people obviously pitching this uh this device if you will to people in youth leagues and everywhere what is the number one objection you are getting from people as to why they are not willing to buy this products same thing as football where it's like com misconceptions where they say you know it's G to add a ton of weight to the helmet it's less than half a pound so it's it's not going to add a bunch of weight it's it's basically lighter than a tissue box um and then for the most part in hockey it's been pretty receptive um I think the biggest thing is weight and understanding that like feeling it for themselves and saying oh this isn't that bad and then um yeah I think that's the number one are you currently satis ified with the number of sales of Guardian caps in the hockey Community absolutely not okay fair enough there's a ton of room to for growth again we're early um but I I think you know right now we're we're working through the the ideas of like this is going to be the Magic Bullet that fixes everything for a player that's had four to five concussions or something like that we want to eliminate those four to five concussions so we want to be on the front end of it to to keep it from happening because as I played football and if if you have a concussion it's from my experience it was easier to slip into another one um so we're trying to you know mitigate those subconcussive blows on the front end so we're not dealing with something on at five years down the road where it's you know your four concussions in I've I've refereed hockey out here in line and ice hockey both and twice in probably the last I don't know four years once after a face off I just lost an Edge and right I didn't even land them well hit my head and kind of jerk you're saying referee should wear these now is that what you're advocating I was wondering about that I mean and then when I was on the ice I just lost my Edge going forwards to backwards I if I toe picked my or what whatever it was but I jerk back my head hit hard you know helmet went flying and I just wonder if I would have had one of these on if it would have been a little bit better because the second time I definitely concussed myself and it was terrible it's not fun and I mean I'm a you know 40-year-old not looking to uh do anything with professional sports or anything like that but you know you definitely feel for the kids and stuff who are experiencing these concussions at Young ages and everything and I mean I think it would be great obviously if this can get more visibility in the youth hockey communities just across the country yeah and I mean you guys play on a much harder playing surface than what football players play on so you're not just looking at the ice doesn't forgive a whole lot no I mean football players you're looking at like helmet to helmet all the time but hockey you got to look at helmet to helmet shoulder to helmet helmet to boards helmet toce hel to ice yeah there's a lot there's a lot to look elbow yeah helmet to Elbow uh NFL teams Jake Kon I this questions for you uh players we now they wear these sleeves over their helmets uh with the logos any chance of are you working on anything for the aesthetic look I'm sure that uh right now it looked a little awkward right seeing a sleeve over the guardian caps but what are you doing to work on the Aesthetics of Guardian caps yeah I mean transparently we are a safety company not an Aesthetics company but one of our core values as a company is lead with yes so what happened is the NFL said hey they called us up on a Sunday in March at one point and said hey in three weeks can you outfit our entire team with guardians caps wow all right sure we'll figure it out then a couple years later they said hey can you expand this to all positions sure we'll figure it out now this past year they said again with about four weeks notice hey can you make this game day ready can it match the existing helmets we want to wear these on the field so again we said yes what we're coming up upon is really a paradigm shift in our company where hey we can't get away with yes this worked in this we know it looks like hell but hey at least it works it's a practice device we don't really care about what people look like to the point that hey this thing is working we want to take it not only from the practice field we want to put it on the game field and we want to put it in front of millions of fans how are we going to make it look better yes absolutely we're definitely looking at at opportunities to improve the Aesthetics of the device make it more streamlined make it look more like the helmet um so you'll be some seeing something come out on the football field probably next year um that'll look a little bit better um and then if that works and and it looks great then we'll probably transition that to hockey as well you mentioned uh the recent growth and everything and how fast things kind of happened talk to me about the early days of Guardian Sports and maybe you mentioned offline there's some different names for the company talk to me about early on when the company is first starting and then you're starting to pitch this concept to football teams and football players at the time how long did it take from I mean you got a nice office right now nice area for an interview and everything but uh how long did it take to earn that nice office I guess is ultimately what I'm getting at what were the early struggles like with the company it's always funny because people say like and and Mike was here as well but like people always say oh it's an overnight success an overnight success 14 years in the making is not it would be nice if it happened like that yeah yeah exactly I mean what we were trying to do back in the day is change football and that's not a very easy thing to do especially when you get some of these these older coaches that that say oh I got my bell wrung back in the day and I'm fine what's bich feel about Guardian caps yeah yeah so I mean having that shift was incredibly painful in trying to convince coaches and players ultimately what we wanted to Target was let's go after youth leags let's convince the younger players because we thought similar to hockey similar to baseball it's going to be a Bottoms Up adoption safety leads from the bottom what we kind of found is football at least is a top- Down Sport it's a copycat sport people want to follow what the NFL does they then want to follow what college does they then want to find follow what high school does so it was pretty rough I mean it was going to trade shows it was people laughing us out of the room um it was a lot of times going to to Glazier shows Nike Playbook shows athletic training shows and you don't talk to a single person but you have to keep sticking it out because eventually you'll get that one I remember it was my parents at a show I don't remember which one it was um but they sat the entire weekend from Friday to Sunday and them going from from this business side where oh we're working with all these big companies to being embarrassed and no one wanting to speak to them was pretty a pretty good gut check for them but they got through Friday to Sunday not a single person walked up to their Booth everyone would laugh like talk in the corner at them and then finally Clint Hagerty from uh South Carolina came up and said oh this makes total sense so then immediately turned around bought Guardian caps for their entire team and back in 2013 who who was that and was who who was that Clint Clint Hagerty at South Carolina the football athletic trainer okay fair enough okay yeah um and immediately 2013 jvon Clowney was one of the first college football players wearing a guardian cap and from there then we got some adoption at the high school levels around South Carolina and you could see almost a band around Columbia pickup and then Clemson got it because oh if their big biggest Rivals gonna wear it they might as well wear it and then we started getting sou Clemson and then you pick up just another College you get Georgia State you get Georgia Tech you get and that's where it kind of starts filling in those gaps little by little it's monkey SE monkey deal yeah no yeah for sure and then uh I just have one question before we go to the next break so these caps absorb about what 10 to 12% of the force is that something that I read yeah so according to the NFL at NFL game speeds um if one player is wearing a guardian cap it reduces impact by 10% if two players are wearing a guardian cap it impa uh reduces impact by 20% and that's at NFL game speeds if you go down to the high school and youth levels Stanford saw that um we can reduce harm head acceleration response metric it's just a a term used in the industry by up to 40% so pretty significant reductions and transparently we're never going to reduce those big concussions I mean you come downhill or you come down the ice at someone at 20 plus miles an hour I don't care what they wearing that guy's going to get concussed most likely what we're really aiming for is those non-concussive blows those repetitive hits the average high school lineman for football according to Purdue University takes 1,00 to, 1500 hits to the head every single season that's just constant bashing of the head over and over again and you can only imagine it's like getting a bruise eventually something's going to break and you're gonna have a concussion from that so that's what our company was originally targeting and we see that that success can be transferred from the football field onto the ice yeah NHL players are going in burst of 20 plus miles an hour so that's interesting that you pointed that out and they're getting faster they're skating quicker a lot of that and of course yeah we want to do anything to prevent injuries in hockey and in all sports for that stay with us folks uh coming up next we'll continue our conversation with Jake Hansen Mike Crawford from Guardian sports right here on lockdown golden kns we are find us wherever you get your podcast please make sure that you tune in tomorrow as well for WTF what the Friday uh Jack Hansen and Mike Crawford from Guardian Sports you like that guys uh uh you could give us some comments too after Today's Show uh J Jay hen Mike Crawford Guardian sports are our guest Chris so do you have and we can start on the hockey side otherwise we can transition to football but do you have a market outside of professional in college even in higher level high school specifically youth leagues like 15 14 and under do you have a specific area where you where you feel that the guardian caps are doing their best starting on the hockey side first feel like they're we're doing our best and can you elaborate a little bit more sorry is there one specific region Community hockey rank team that is really on this right now I know it's early so it's okay it's not but I'd say the first adopters were Gilmore Academy in Ohio um okay February they ordered for their entire program so um that was great to see and then I mean obviously on the football side we have Park High School wearing them in games and then uh I'd say otherwise on the hockey side like we're seeing a lot of Acceptance in the college ranks again with us starting in January we don't really have a lot of on Ice data yet right this is new this is new in the hockey option so what what we can at least speak to is when Mike and I are going to these shows when we're having these conversations with these teams we've had a lot of at least initial interest from different college teams such as like Princeton Michigan Penn State Ohio State so a lot of the Big 10 a lot of the ivy league has initially shown interest we're hoping that we can convert some of them into Believers in the product and again our goal is we hope that it takes less than 12 years because now hey you've got something that that's proven that works on the football field why not transition that uh onto the ice yeah we missed the boat on this season so like when we're releasing in January all these guys are already pretty much wrapping up so um we're hoping to hit the ground running this year in in 2025 do you feel that and again it's obviously sales you never know how it's going to come together um do you feel it might be the same business model the top down whether it's the NHL or higher level competitive colleges and then it goes down or is there an opportunity at the Grassroots level to work with local rinks and youth cocky communities to go up instead yeah I think there is a lot of room for Grassroots um just because we talked about the elements that are in hockey that aren't in football you know you're dealing with the ice the the boards and everything like that so there is an individual application in hockey that isn't as like big in football right um and so and at the grassroot level you're gonna help kids get on skates quicker like they're not going to fall and it reduces the sound too so when they hit the ice they're not going to have their ears ringing and be like I don't I I don't want I want to that sound it's it's like it's like a car accident you the crunching like that just that sound does not get out of your ears it is so weird and dynamic and yeah I I like that yeah I uh I I cover UNLV football here locally and the Raiders of the NFL and I see them wearing Guardian caps it's funny because UNLV football just had position players three years ago wearing them last year well I don't know if it was a budgetary thing last year with the new coach they all were wearing them and now again they're wearing them again and then I dug in a little bit deeper but they have five different helmets that they wear and they're wondering how they can put different sleeves on each helmet of course uh it becomes a cost Factor uh but they say college football they say it's right around the corner as far as an acceptance to where Guardian caps on game days in games is that true yeah I mean we we've been having some conversations with different col College Programs I won't won't give away who we've spoken to I just gave one away I'll let you I'll let you lead that one uh if you but I won't put anyone else's feet to the fire but yeah we've heard uh heard from some college programs that they've got some player interest in wearing them in games and uh so far NCAA everyone else is kind of following in the footsteps of NFL so kind of exciting we don't know what this fall will look like but definitely some fun projects going on around here right now I have another question here quickly and then I'll get it back to Chris but how do the helmet companies like in the NFL like who was it ryell how do they feel about Guardian caps like covering up their helmets NFL this year I think they have something too like five new variations of helmets for players to wear but how do they feel about you guys coming in and then covering up their nice shiny helmets with their their logo on it too right their branding you know Tony you asked if you shouldn't ask any questions that's a fun one well what we like to say is we and keep them nice and clean for game day so that's the benefit that we I like good good job um all right so for me that was uh was pretty good what was my last question no no Chris your your son tell them about your son first uh that he wants to wear one right yeah no I did talk to my son about it and I had a conversation with my wife literally after we recorded the show and certainly interested and you know maybe we'll have an offline conversation about that but um definitely in interest and you know the kids nowadays I mean when we were all younger it was you know a bunch of Macho tough guys you get an injury you're kind of happy about it and you're showing it off and I do think kids nowadays are a little more receptive to the safety than than we were I mean we're out there you know jumping our bikes on wooden ramps that are coming apart and stuff we fall down we laugh our parents laugh us and we fall down because we did something stupid and maybe now we're a little more careful with our children than back in the day and everything maybe wrap and bubble wrap a little bit like we said earlier in the show but my last question maybe a job interview type of question here where do you see this company in let's say two years and 10 years yeah that's a good question um I see us continuing to expand in the markets that we currently have um so I see the products that currently exist for us the guardian cap uh for football the guardian cap for hockey um our Loop product our Pearl lacrosse ball I see all of those continuing Market expansion so people understanding that safety is a bigger priority and us taking on more of a leadership role in that space um at least for the next two years for the next 10 years I mean we're going to continue to say Yes um so whether that be NHL um whether it be new projects where hey we deal deal really well right now with the helmet to helmet blows what we don't deal well with is the face mask to face mask blows so we're looking at potential solutions for that so we're always going to be looking to provide the next level of protection for athletes at all levels um whether that be with our Guardian Caps or something that we don't even know what it looks like yet all right I got I got I got a buy I got a buyer over here for you I got a customer show him show him a little bit about the GU I got a picture on my side he can see it too uh s sell my young man Christopher here on why we should consider investing in a guardian cap and show it to him talk to him about it so chrisopher we've got Guardian cap right here it's easy to put on one size fits all it's lighter than a tissue box so um you got four straps up front to attach it to the face mask and then on the back you've got an adjustable strap to tighten it um and so when you're practicing you don't have to worry about the the Zamboni that didn't uh you know C out the ice and it's all chunky and you could trip and fall and and and hear that loud bang that you you hate to hear as well as you know you you can be more confident uh with the puck around the boards knowing that you got a little bit extra protection on on top of your head Chris you got to show them that s too someday he he needs to wear the helmet not for maybe the contact but he uh his first ever House League goal little man celebrating Going Bonkers and and uh it took him all four seconds to wind up on his butt during the S so maybe that's he should wear what do you think Chris talk to the microphone what do you think what do you think next time I score a goal if I have that I might go more crazier he might go okay so he's saying he's little more confident if he scores a goal because now he's got his Guardian cap on right and those those do last longer right for youth uh on every level football or hockey even because there's not as much contact right to the head at that level yeah and one thing that I I want to make sure that we iterate that gets across throughout this conversation is we don't want cost to be a factor for anyone that has the opportunity to things I mean you've got a guardian cap that for the Youth levels and hockey will last four or five years um same thing with football and when we're selling it we're selling at a bulk team price at around $50 mid $50 per unit so that's like $10 a year that you're investing I think that that's proba worth it in the long run yeah you should get Chris to be the first one Chris get Junior to wear him I like it he'll start a trend for sure where where can uh folks purchase uh their Guardian caps uh can you tell us a little bit more about that because uh right now is it just online or as Chris I think you might have asked earlier um I didn't get the answer but are they available like in Sporting Good shops and that as well and there's no knockoffs right right that's never going to happen I'm sure no we're we're lucky we got a whole wall of patents behind us if I can angle oh nice I see it yeah yeah yeah we got so no no knockoffs if you see a knockoff out there um it's probably just made in China any idea uh if that thing's been certified or tested or that they have any insurance so avoid those um but uh yeah you can find us at Guardians sports.com you can buy individual units there um you can also reach out for team quotes and team pricing whether it be for football um hockey Loop um Pearl whatever and then our um football caps and our Loops are currently available in Dick Sporting goodsy and shields around the country well we appreciate you guys uh joining us today on the show it's been so informative I think it's a something that's necessary uh especially in Youth Sports especially now in Youth Hockey and those kids are just they're ska much faster it's they're more athletic they're stronger all of that so I think that that is so important uh Jake Hansen coo Mike Crawford vice president there of sales at Guardian Sports thank you gentlemen so much for joining us today we do appreciate it thank you guys for having us thanks Tony thanks Chris appreciate it and don't forget tomorrow WTF what the Friday that'll be coming your way and make sure that you subscribe to our lockdown Golden Nights YouTube channel from Las Vegas for my man Chris Schock I'm Tony crasco have a great day we'll see you tomorrow right here on lockdown golden nights and please take care
