Is LSU's Defense BACK? + Nussmeier TOP 5 QB!

to the ver and verdict sport show I'm your host Jacob ver and I hope everybody's having a good one welcome into our Wednesday stream we're going live more towards 1:00 in the afternoon now we're switching things up school started getting into the mix of things football season's on the horizon though we're really close to the Vegas Showdown the kickoff classic if you will been a lot of talk a lot of hype uh but it's finally going to culminate into hopefully a w i mean either way it goes I think uh it won't be the end of the season for either team I think both teams are kind of in a bit of a similar situation finding themselves out you know figuring out the identity figuring out the pieces that have now eventually moved on to the NFL uh we'll give you a little bit of a preview on what I think Garrett nmar would develop into this season uh we'll do some offensive line hype checking and then I'll give you a little bit of an outlook on the defense cuz I feel like the defense is your focal point here in this matchup so during the stream if you got any questions if you got anything you want to type in the chat go ahead we'll be reading in the chat answering your questions keeping up with it throughout the live stream go ahead drop a thumbs up for us if you don't mind hit the Subscribe button we'll be going live on Friday at 1 p.m and it's official betting preview USC game preview whatever you want to call it it's here there's no more speculating there's no more hypotheticals no more reports no more this no more that we're just breaking it down we're back into the season grind here we are finally felt like it it wouldn't come now it is here but Garrett nus Meer we'll start this off just by saying the obvious lot of Tools around him lot of pieces a lot of things to make him look better and that's you know that's the life of a quarterback you're in a a team with a lot of good skill positions with a lot of good receivers with a lot of good you know offensive lineman runningbacks whatever the case may be they're all going to come together and like coach Kelly says the parts are going to be greater than the individual pieces if that makes sense like yeah you had great pieces last year you had Malik neighbors you had Jaden Daniels you had people that were great individual players who exceeded expectations who created explosive moments helped push that offense to the Forefront of college football um but this year you've got a bunch of continuity across a lot of position groups quite frankly if you ask me despite losing the three explosive players you might be looking at one of the most experienced balanced LSU offenses in a while maybe all time you've got one of the best offensive lines of all time you've got a deep wide receiver room sure you don't have that like flashy duo in terms of name or you know recognition like you had with Malik and Brian and then of course with jjet and Jamar and there's been a lot of those right there's been a lot of big pieces and now it's more towards just everybody's experienced everybody's kind of been gelled into the scheme for the last three years and coach Kelly made mention to it the people that were freshman in the opener against Florida State when coach Kelly arrived and they played in New Orleans and what was it the allar or All-Star kickoff special All State kickoff special or something like that whenever LSU got embarrassed the first time by Florida State some people learned from those moments there's some bruises along those upsets there was some you know adversity that kind of helped these players who are now the veterans who are now stepping into these bigger roles uh Harold Perkins and Will Campbell both number sevens I mean just to name a few of the players that are now in a completely different situation this year than they were and that's why I'm just wondering like the team as a whole seems to be way more experienced way more balanced way more um you know they have a lot more potential if you ask me just because it it's not going to be their first time walking around the block you know last year you had some pieces that were still green some pieces that still had to be uh you know taught the way and and the entirety of the scheme and just what the coaches expected from them this year you could kind of start to see everything come together at least in the fall Camp since I mean the defensive side it looked a lot better than what you would have expected it to look like or what you've seen throughout last season and last season you know they had their highs they had their lows it was like a roller coaster season at times the defense had some moments where we were like okay it's maybe not the end of the world and then there were other times where it just was like a train going off the tracks this year at least from what we've seen at fall Camp the defensive Line's kind of been putting in some pressure and being able to actually make their pressure presence felt and that's going to give you a little more confidence because you don't put them DBS on an island like that and then you know let's address the DBS individually as a group ashon stamps has shown a lot of growth he looks like a guy that you could 100% look to to be not only a leader but a consistent starter a consistent impact um same thing for Harold Perkins I mean last year he had his moments as well yeah he's always got that big game capability that big play capability I'll compare him to someone like tyon Matthew you're better with him on the field just being there now in this instance I think you know that there's maybe hype isn't the right word but there's just a lot of expectations around the building that these guys aren't going to be the LSU team that you've seen in past years in a good way they're going to take all the experiences they're going to take the new scheme they're going to take the new you know Insight if you will from the coaches and it's going to translate into a produ that's inevitably hopefully an elite Championship like level performance and I mean that's what the coaches have been preaching that's been the the main goal if you will for Coach K is just to try to get this team back into that legitimate status and they're debuting at number 12 that's the bare minimum of what you need to be into the college football playoff and I I feel like they can improve on their ranking I think them debuting at that spot says a lot about what um not only the college football officials but just what the college football world as a whole thinks of the team some people might not like the number 12 ranking I feel like it's a pretty good spot to put him because it's preseason you really don't know what to expect last year sure you know you had a fantastic team comparatively you know to most other situations and most other years you didn't really get it done you didn't really get over to hump if you returned Someone Like A Jaden Daniels maybe LSU cracks into the top five just off of pure potential alone this year though them putting them in the playoff race makes me think that maybe not the writing is on the wall but a lot of other people are giving credit where credit is due because it you can look to as many you know little minuscule pieces to this as possible you can look at Brian Kelly's 10 game win streak over the past few seasons I don't know if it's five six years running back to his time at Notre Dame you can look to how Garrett no Meer is probably not going to be your run-of-the-mill first year starter he'll probably hit the ground running and be like coach Haven said one of the alltime leapers in college football I mean he threw for 400 yards almost against Wisconsin I think it was 395 about 2 years ago the SEC title game in Georgia sure he comes in whenever it's uh almost figured out and the game is getting out of hand and some people can rumor if that would be why he had the performance he did I'm going give him some credit 300 yards against a Georgia defense whose backups would be able to start at most SEC schools it didn't matter if it was garbage time or not they were still ready to play you're telling me you don't think they wanted to intercept nus Meer or add on to the the beating that was happening in the SEC title game of course they wanted to they were still playing Garrett nus Meer had a great game showed flashes and the type of you know progression I expect him to go on I think that'll be expected the 300 yard game will probably turn into your average gar NM game and that's not saying it's going to be bad it's obviously fantastic it's just saying how consistent and how great he really could turn into especially with these pieces around him not to mention he's going to prove himself a year he's got a lot of motivation he could be one of the few players in college football really in the history of college football that can start have one solid season fantastic season and head to the NFL draft and probably get drafted with a high pick just because of the what he's going to show um he's also growing a lot decision-making wise mentally and I feel like both of those aspects are going to help you as a starting quarterback everybody wants to know um about the chemistry everybody wants to know about just his arm if he's going to throw picks I think the decision making kind of goes into you know that discussion a little bit it looks like he's a lot smarter he's been not risking it as much in practice and a lot of people are saying well practice is a time to risk I mean I'm not going to argue with you there but he's even taking those moments to be able to be safe and throw a ball out of bounds throw a ball away keep a ball out of the defense's uh hands if you will and I think that that shows growth it shows maturity it shows the direction that not only Garrett n Mar headed in not only the offense has headed in but I think that the entire team as a whole let's dive into the offensive line hype check cuz I feel like this is seamless um Will Campbell sounded off had his pressure and he he sounded confident and you want to hear that from your uh your big number seven your big leader I mean I'm going to I'm going to dub him the SP spokesperson of LSU football at this point he had a lot of good sound bites one of them was saying he's not going to Las Vegas to go to Caesar's Palace he's going to get into a fist fight with USC and I mean that's going to make you just sit up a little bit and be like okay well we got some uh some some oomph behind this we've got some real physical aggression that's about to come out of these men uh he kept mentioning multiple times about running the football they're not going to hide it and it's all been played out in the open for honestly the last couple of weeks everyone's been talking about the bully ball everybody's been talking about USC's undersized line a lot of people are debating if it is undersized I mean if it if it wasn't I'm wondering why it has been such a big talking point I feel like you know yeah USC has some Talent I'm not going to short them on that side the stick but I do want to just explicitly warn any doubters of LSU's offensive line that they could be in a situation where they turn into like I said earlier one of the best offensive lines you've seen at LSU ever they've had a lot of uh height built around them yeah you got two of the best tackle pairings but you've also got a lot of consistency with guys like Garrett Dinger and Miles Frasier Garrett delinger joins Will Campbell and Emy Jones and the fact that they've played every year their career the fact that they were thrown into the mix in their freshman year they were able to just constantly you know stack days build reps and get into the position that they are in today I feel like this is really one of the biggest pieces to LSU having a successful game this weekend and we'll dive into it more on Friday when we do the preview I don't want to harp on it too to too much but if you have an offense chew the clock methodically get down the field get first downs keep that other offense off the field you in turn help your defense they're resting they're getting confident they don't have to come right back out because you went three and out and the other offens is stacking momentum and they're like oh geez you know the the being able to keep USC at Bay with running the ball right down the middle right outside whatever the case may be I think that's going to be the biggest boost to LSU as a whole sure you're going to be able to score points sure you're going to be able to tire that defense out but like I said the main thing that's going to be able to be benefited from this is the fact that the clock's going to get chewed and the other offense isn't going to see the field as much they won't be able to get into that Groove and I feel like you know that's going to help that defense get eased into their new spot with their new coaches their new schemes their new roles um another thing with the offensive line I would wonder if Tyrie Adams and Paul mubanga are going to get in you've kind of seen them Flash in and out and substitute roles uh throughout this Camp I'd imagine miles Frasier is good to go they had him listed as probable I feel like if he's not then Tyreek is going to step in but other than that I don't think there's really much uncertainty for this offensive line and really as the offense as a whole not much uncertainty the game plan is clear cut and dry and if they execute it they could really be on the road to quite a year quite a development from you know Seasons Beginnings as of late one of the other things that I would really pay attention to for the offense would be Chris Hilton and this injury status um my gut just from what I've what I feel what I've seen you know just throughout the last couple of weeks and just I mean even maybe the last couple of days I would say Chris Hilton would be a go he's questionable they're taking their time with him he's got a bone bruise this could just be a precaution to where if he doesn't get to the point they expect him to get at in his recovery process that they could pull him last minute wouldn't imagine that it would happen I feel like all systems are go for Chris Hilton it looked like he was you know able to uh get into practice look like he was able to kind of get moving around I feel like if it was a really really really tough spot for him to get in wouldn't be a questionable you know marking on him like I said I just think the questionable tag is more so about let's monitor him let's see what we can get from him let's just kind of see what speed he's at um and I think it'll kind of get wiped off of them I think Miles and Chris will both play both obviously Big Boost to the offense the production the consistency just a continuity you want your guys to all be out there you want your guys to all be alongside each other and you don't want any uh uncertainty on any last minute changes especially on your offensive line or your offensive skill positions because those are really your biggest pieces that are going to be able to help boost this team real quick before we hop into our defensive Outlook shout out our guys at happy Dad you know we've been partnering with them for throughout the summer we're going to continue to partner with them throughout the college football season to give you couple of interesting things we're keep under wraps we're going to be announcing them here soon we probably be announcing them next week I'll keep y'all updated but wanted to drop a little nugget out there you know happy Dad gluten-free low and sugar no artificial flavors best of hard Selter on the market get it at Rouse's get it at Walmart get it at Albertson it's been a stock I mean sometimes you go to the shelf and it's out of stock sometimes it's not there I went to Rouses the other day saw a little pallet of it so go tell them the ver and vertic Cent you go grab you a case go refresh into this fading Louisiana summer heat we're about to be into fall it's not going to be drenching and and and you know miserable but as you wrap up your summer crack you up in a happy dead so support the boys appreciate y'all for joining real quick defensive Outlook kind of talked about it earlier with the offensive segment um they are going to be relying on and I'm not going to say relying that's really lack of a better word they're going to be um focused or kind of controlled with based on how the offense does if the offense can chew clock if the offense can keep USC off the field then LSU's defense doesn't have to have that continuous coverage they have to keep scratching their heads and watch um Lincoln Riley in that offensive ma Masterpiece I will I want to stress this I can't stress this enough Lincoln Riley he's not just your average offensive-minded coach and quite frankly the statistics albe it in the Pack 12 and against Pack 12 opponents and against people of that nature they've had a pretty damn good run at putting points on the board pretty sure I feel like one of the lowest point totals he's had recently was in like the 35 to 40 Point range which is insane because if you're averaging 35 points you can damn your boat race anybody not to mention pushing it more towards 40 points per game I'm not saying you're going to expect it or whatever I all I'm saying is to curb a Lincoln rley offense you have to have a stellar you know clock management system you're going to have to 100% hold the ball win the time of possession Battle Run the clock and hopefully just get that defense on us USC side uncomfortable to where your defense can be the opposite be comfortable know that the offense has it control know that the time's getting chipped away and they don't have to be sitting there constantly performing being looked to to stop what could be an explosive offense yeah have Miller Moss is in his first year but I don't think it matters I think Lincoln Riley's had a lot of success with a lot of quarterbacks we can dub it back to his Oklahoma days you got Baker Mayfield you got Kyler Murray uh of course you got Caleb Williams I mean he's had pretty good success with a lot of change with a lot of pieces moving in and out Lincoln Riley I'm not going to not going to let this one fly under the radar I think what's going to have to happen you know aside from LSU's offense chewing the clock is the D Line's going to have to steal the show they're going to have to lead the way they're going to have to put pressure on the quarterback push through that offensive line and not have the DBS cover as long don't put them on Islands don't allow the quarterback to just sit there in the pocket and have all the time in the world to pick your defensive coverage and decide where to put it and decide you know how they're going to kill you if the dline can put pressure on them I mean sure the DBS are going to be tested but I feel like this could be it's it's a doable situation it's not like you've got a uber mobile quarterback with a huge you know wide receiver room that could uh Tor you in any which way I feel like LSU is kind of blessed in this instance because their wide receiver room I mean look I'm not going to sit here and and and go compare every single position group or every single room or every single asset of this team I would feel like LSU's wide receiver room if it's not better it's just as good as USC's wide receiver room with that being said you've been tested by your wide receiver room all Camp you've guarded guys like kyen laay you've guarded guys like Chris Hilton Jr CJ Daniels whoever you want to throw out in there you've been there you've done that you've taken care of it I feel like going into this game it shouldn't be anything different this could be one of the biggest pulse checks you get on LSU's defense in the next five weeks yeah they go to South Carolina in week three but other than that uh Nicholls UCLA might be an interesting little spot South Alabama could be you know interesting first quarter probably going to be you know over with by the end of the game but week one you're really going to get to see what speed LSU is going to be playing at when it comes time to Old my B potential college football playoffs this is the litness test yeah it's week one it's not going to be make or break obviously you can grow turn into a different team after I mean you've seen lless you do it the last four years unfortunately because they've lost the last four openers in the last two seasons they've shaken it back got double digit wins but this year you win this game with the 12-man college football playoff being as wide open as it is and you have a complete change of Fate you have a completely new season ahead of you I would stay on the lookout if I was a fan if I was you know trying to see what this defense was going to be and and the personnels and just like the overall pulse of it I would be on the lookout for maybe Sage Ryan moving back to safety during the game I don't know if he comes out in corner I don't know if he comes out in safety it's going to be one of the more interesting pieces I would be on the lookout for that if that's the case I'd be on the lookout for JK Johnson sliding into quarterback two we got our guy Trevor in the chat asking is z going to play because I know we'll need him and Jer Brown at some point and JK yeah I feel like right now um with the order that they're going to have quarterbacks in I'd imagine that JK Johnson would SL out before Z at this point Z Alexander Great DB had a lot of consistency last year you know what to expect from him don't know if the recover is hindering it don't know really what it is but JK has kind of hopped in front of him when you saw Sage Ryan not practice at the end of fall Camp he JK was filling in and stepping up to cover that quarterback two roll so if Sage makes that switch to safety those two moves are going to go hand in hand and I would even honestly I'd say you could potentially see tovan the field at times it's all going to depend on how this DB R and the defense as a whole comes out and starts but could be some shakeups real quick we got Connor in the chat saying hope Sage Ryan and major Burns Ballout the season and I think they can you know I feel like not only we're talking about experience we're talking about veteran pieces growth maturity all these different you know verbes that you can use to talk about a team that's growing into their own and hitting their potential and these two guys exemplify that the best quite frankly Sage Ryan has taken everything on the chin whether it be switching positions being cross drained hate from whatever he's he's been able to completely ignore all the distractions focus on his development his game plan um his potential as a whole really and now he's in a big year where if he has a good season he gets to play on Sundays and the same thing for major Burns he's going to be in a new position Blake Baker's kind of like okay we feel like you're best fit here and if it turns out to be true as we've kind of seen him in practice be I'm not going to say a secure tackler cuz yeah you're playing against your own guys and at times they're not always wrapping up but for the most part at that point in the field near the linebacker spot last year just seeing what he was able to do with the tackle totals he could probably be one of the best tacklers on this defense Brian Kelly has said time and time again that the safety room or just really the open field tackling as a whole is going to have to be addressed and he's kind of maybe not worried about it for the defense going into the week one but I imagine it would be an an emphasis a focal point if you will I don't think anybody's going to be able to attack that and eliminate that worry more than major Burns I think he's going to have a pretty good year a lot of Statistics a lot of uh big moments and another person Harold Perkins he could take over in week one he could have one simple play it could be a game saving interception fumble tackle for loss sack doesn't matter one big moment one type of like big boost and he could potentially light a fire that stays burning for the entire season for this defense all you need is to just flip that switch and show everybody that you're ready to play you start doing that by wearing number seven and then you finish the other half by showing up week one and playing like number seven I feel like he's going to be able to do it he's done it in Fall Camp he's picked off Garr NM he's been all over the place Brian Kelly said he's been super hard to block it's all music to your ears but now we're going to have to see it play out unfold and really just hopefully translate to a successful game against USC we're about to shoot out here get off the live we're going in the Tiger Stadium we're going check out the new jumbo ton I've seen a couple of pieces of it but it's officially finished it's going to be done in time for September 7th in Nichols game which is crazy because a couple of days ago I walked by the stadium walked by the scoreboard and I didn't think it would be ready it was my first thought is how are we having a game in a week and this isn't done boom blink your eye next day you wake up and it's damn near done they have the whole backing of the scoreboard done I think they got new ribbon boards and then two smaller scoreboards on the uh north side of the stadium so we're going to have those out on the socials today I'll put the links to our socials in the description at ver and verdict uh we have our USC preview on Friday like I said no more rumors no more hypotheticals we're just simply in the thick of the grind now USC game on Sunday will be in Vegas live coverage
