position over the safety like it's no secret that a pass rusher is more valuable than a safety I think Simmons is a better player like pound-for-pound if you're evaluating the two but pass rushers there's a reason why they go top three in the draft there's a reason why they get the most non quarter most money of any player non-quarterback up until Justin Jefferson like they're pass rushers they are the second most important position on the field after quarterback so I'll go with judon but Simmons such an incredible pickup for how talented of a player he is and it still doesn't really feel real that Justin Simmons and Jessie Bates are going to be lining up next to each other this year in Atlanta has anyone else kind of had that like Pinch Me moment like holy crap the Falcons have two players at safety just two on their defense who in the last two years have a combined 28 takeaways and that's just like those two but you're not even looking at the other nine players on defense those two alone 28 takeaways combined in the last two years like that is more than a vast majority of teams had altogether last year with everyone they have on defense unbelievable it it's going to be so much fun to watch it really will be uh Carson's in the same boat still feel like I'm dreaming for it all uh let's talk about uh Stefan Gilmore a little bit here because he's still a free agent I don't think Atlanta's going to sign him because of two reasons one the money like they have kind of dried up their Pond a little bit with spending on judon and Simmons doesn't mean they can't create more cap space they very easily can but they may feel like we don't need to create more cap space to sign someone when we like what we have at our current CB2 but this preseason game will be very telling like if Josh Johnson the Ravens backup quarterback is shredding the Falcons quarterbacks outside of AJ Terrell maybe that's something you go look at for sure uh Stefan Gilmore would be pretty fun they're like you got Gilmore Bates Gilmore Terell Bates Simmons that might be the best secondary in the NFL it's scary it it'll be top five for sure yes well the the stat that you had when we were on live the other day that 28 takeaways yeah between the two of them which by the way sorry to interrupt um they rank first and second and takeaways the last two years the two takeaway leaders over the last two years are on the same team that is unfair it's unfair it's also pretty like it's very difficult to organically produce that because there's only so many takeaways to there's only one football so you can't have two guys getting one interception on the same play so it's just very difficult for those two players to be ever on the same Squad because there's only one ball and not everyone can get an interception on every single play so to find both those leaders one and two Tied by the way so not even two one and one on the same team so excited so excited all right if you want to beat the like your takeaway machine times two with Jessie Bates already there but I mean got Jarrett onada like two Stout run Stoppers with pass rush upside despite playing on the interior you got judon I'm going to hope that e Katy has a bit of a bounceback game today cuz that was a little bit of a shaky performance in week one yeah appreciate it Reed let's run through this bad boy like Zach Harris said he ended the year on a high Notice season ago three sacks in the last handful of weeks so hopefully he continues to rise and then you get Carter and eaty rotating opposite of judon like Eddie Goldman's had a really strong camp like you're just finding guys on this defensive line all over the place and then the Falcon secondary Terell Bates Simmons like man you don't need to have some Pro Bowl CB2 for this defense to be almost Elite with how like loaded they are star power-wise Terrell bats and Simmons I think are like baates and Simmons are top 10 safeties without a doubt and Terell is probably like a top 12 to 15 safety like he's right there on the outside of the top 10 if he isn't top 10 so he kind of floats between 8 to 12 a little bit but still like this is going to be an incredible defense from where we were just 5 days ago to now like you just added two superstars and Justin Simmons and Matthew Judah actual Superstars coming over right in the middle of the preseason that's not common like you just don't see teams add that much Pro Bowl Talent this late in the off season or now in the preseason going into the regular season all right who you got though Falcons or Ravens let me know um I do see a couple of people in the chat talking about adding a wide receiver I'm on board if you missed it jacem Grant who Atlanta signed on Monday he retired he popped up with a hamstring injury he's had two season ending injuries the last two preseason like before this year even so this would be a third you clearly had a big enough need a wide receiver to go sign a guy that is com off an Achilles and a season ending knee injury a season ago so you're on the mark you're on the you were in the market for one you lost that one one would think you're still heavily pursuing a wide receiver right you can check out the Falcons wide receiver depth chart here I don't want to be a Negative Nancy a half glass empty kind of guy but Ray Ray McLoud is a really good special teamer he's got awesome speed but he is not a proven consistent wide receiver in the league Ray McLoud has about 750 receiving yards not in like a single season like in his entire NFL career I mean he's been in the NFL since 2018 and his receiving yards are 7681 touchdown that's usually what you try to find in one season from like your wide receiver too last year at 135 receiving yards like is that really someone who's slated for a huge role and I get wide receiver three might not scream big role but in a pass happy offense with Zack Robinson from the Rams and Kirk Cousins from the Vikings there's going to be a lot of passes like the ball's going to be in the air a ton so not only you to have three good receivers but you got to have good depth at that spot right it's not even so much like what if Drake London goes down for the season Drake London goes down for the year they're [ __ ] like that's just the reality of it but he's picked up pick up some you know uh bumps and bruises during the game and it'd be nice to have some good depth there to give him a breather if needed and I don't feel like this wide receiver room is adequate for the type of offense the Falcons want to run if it was Arthur Smith last year yeah you can probably get by with that like they're not going to air it out a ton they're going to run the ball a lot they're going to use a lot of two tight end sets that's why a jnu Smith but it's that's not the case anymore like you're going to be throwing the ball all over the field you got to have some good depth and rotation going on at the receiver position and that is one question mark that definitely scares the be jetas out of me a little bit um okay yeah so we got Falcons Ravens this is also our live poll so if You' have not voted there yet go ahead and do so 241 understand why pennx isn't playing in this game don't you just want to see as much as him as possible since you know you're not going to see him during the regular season if all goes well cousin plays well and stays healthy like isn't this your opportunity to get as much tape as possible on him because once the regular season starts there's going to be no camera tape like there's no film you have practice film to go off of which is the start but it's not as good I would imagine as you know game film I I understand that maybe he's you know sewn up the backup QB job and you don't want to risk injury but that just seems a little bit passive and timid like I think penck should play all three preseason games like this is his only opportunity to go up against an opposition get some real reps and then he's on the bench for like two maybe three years you should take advantage of every single preseason game that he can play because that could be the only opportunity he gets to play for a long time so if penx is really not playing today I don't know if he popped up with an injury or something but that's going to be very disappointing um okay yeah doesn't think this this is gonna suck like he's good no need to risk injury I get the fear of risking injury I do think that for certain players that you can just shut them down for the whole preseason right right get your Justin Jefferson's your Tom Brady's the top of the top I do think that fans tend to over crowd the amount of players that can get lumped into they don't need to play like when the regular season comes around these guys aren't just like stats on a box score like it's a physical violent game and you can't simply just like turn it on if it's been off since last January you know what I mean like that switch is not as easy to flip compared to like practice where like hey there's some contact some physicality but you're not taking guys to the ground you're not sacking the quarterback you kind of want to get a couple of those reps in in the preseason so that you don't get your bell rung in the regular season but there are plenty of really good players that just don't need that and they can turn it on that list of players though I don't think is as long as we make it out to be and that's where I'm like hey if you don't want to play the stars in the preseason every game that's fine but like I think at some point they should get out there like again you have your exceptions in like Justin Jefferson Tom Brady like miles Garrett like kind the best of the best each position but you don't have all those guys on one team so I I'm not a big believer and shut them all down in the preseason injuries suck don't get me wrong but the thing with the injury argument that people never take into account is what El what other what else sucks is when you start off 0 and2 too because you didn't play in the preseason and you have more cobweb to shake off than intended and you're going up against a team that kind of worked through all the Kinks in the preseason and they're not running into you know delayed games and false starts in the first week because they kind of like sorted out all those wrinkles in August and not September it's an unpopular opinion I know that it doesn't apply to everyone but it applies to more people than you and I give credit for all right Super Chat menu for today still think that taquon Graham should play for the sake of playing I I don't think this is a wise idea to even rest your backups in the preseason like these guys got to play football again the one club and if you don't want Kirk Cousins to be on the field in preseason fine like you don't twist my arm about it same goes for Drake London and bean like I still think those guys should get one series but okay but backups like they need they need to play they need to play to get better to get reps because when the regular season comes around they're on the bench cold until their numbers called and it would be nice that when their numbers called they at least have some experience from the preseason I know I'm probably overreacting but this is just blasphemy is it not this has gone too coaches to not play guys in the preseason like Andy Reid plays Patrick Mahomes and he's in that 1% club and everyone's got a different way of going about it and there's a bazillion ways or examples of not playing guys and things going well playing guys and things going well and vice versa but I do think that new head coaches tend to be terrified of the injury bug which hey I would be too and if I were in Raheem shoes after losing two like semi starters or two rotational players last week Helms and Trice or either the season or a lot of sees him like I I'd be a little bit nervous too and it's easy for me to say this and be an armchair like coach right now but the the new head the new head coach tendency to go way too far to the polar end of don't play anyone I just think when you got a new head coach you are installing everything from scratch and it's not easy to pick things up with a new head coach for week one of the regular season if you didn't have it going in the preseason like if you are going into a coach's fifth sixth seventh year like the guys know the expectations they know the way things work but with the new head coach like everything's brand new for the regular season right new schedules new routines new everything and I I think preseason is a good time to flush the Kinks out and right now I'm starting to fear that they're waiting for the regular season to do that it would be somewhat if it was even the backups because those guys are the first ones off the bench next man up but no these are third and fourth stringers there is nothing about this that will resemble the Atlanta Falcons second and nine snap Johnson will tuck it and run and he's going to get across the 50 Jay I understand the idea of Team identity but like 22 rushing yards is not an identity like that's a stat I I don't think you can draw comparisons to how five third string offensive line perform to how the five starters will perform like team identity is like Hey we're not lines to monitor here in terms of like Paddock and heiki but we're ultimately talking about you know the third string quarterback so let's not lose sight of that and the kicker which is the starter and that's a problem that one's on NFL Network okay so we'll get the postgame show underway in just a moment here oh there we go okay uh David Anderson good to see you in the chat Ben I want to hear your opinion about Brooks I think Atron Brooks has been flying all all over the field I really like the physicality he brings and the violence like it's a violent game and he's violent on the field now he's probably got some fundamentals to kind of check and work through but all in all I I really lik in what I've seen so far out of nron Brooks I think he's going to be a real Contender to make this 53 man roster and secondary that's a little bit unproven um who do you expect to get caught I don't think hinek is making this roster I mean the guy's kind of playing at a qb3 level with third string Defenders out there he's working with third stringers on offense so that's got to be factored in to your decision but I'm not too impressed by haniki so far better today than week one that's for sure um young wayu that's the story we got to talk about like that's a meaningful impact player for this upcoming season that missed three field goals inside a 50 just can't happen right it's just not doable so I don't think they have to start seeking for a replacement now I'm willing to let this preseason game be one that you give him a pass for but this is his only strike next one there's competition the next day of practice so if he misses a single kick in the preseason finale against the Jags there should be a kicker at Flowery Branch the next day I I really I believe that I'm okay to give him a pass for this one because he's proven to have a good track record he's had five misses in two straight season so he's not quite at that Pro Bowl 2020 level he was at but I'm not interested in giving excuses I'm willing to give a pass right I'm willing to go this is someone that I trust to figure it out and bounce back and I don't have to start looking for a replacement yet but he's got a leash and he's getting towards the end of it with last year missing some uncharacteristic clutch kicks of his like that Bucks game and then this preseason three misses uh yeah talking about coup now the other thing that I just disagree with fundamentally is not playing Michael penck he he he gets three games this year it's the pre season he's not going to play in the regular season if all goes well right that's not the plan to get him regular season snaps you should maximize all three of these games if if you're worried about injury then don't play him for long but we can't just sit everyone out of fear of injury Forever at some point they got to play and do you want to come out and play Rusty in the regular season I I I don't agree with the train of thought that all these guys can just flip a switch when the regular season gets here some can you don't have to play those ones Jessie Bates can Grady Jarrett can Kirk Cousins can but with a new team I think it's worth one series for him to get in the Huddle and not have it be the first time when he get steps on the field for the Steelers game in the regular season I'd rather have him have that moment in the preseason finale of getting in the Huddle getting the play call delivering the play call just going okay so this is what it's like to put a Falcons jersey on and play I don't want him to have that moment in the regular season I want him to have that moment in the preseason so then when the regular season rolls around it's not new habits for him um I also I but I don't understand not playing Michael penck unless there's some injury that we are not aware of which I don't think is the case I I really can't make any sense of it he should be playing honestly he should be playing a lot you should be getting as much film on him as possible right now so that when he's sitting on the bench for the next season or two you have film to draw back to as to things he can work on like you can't replicate games and practices you can try you can get close but you can't cannot replicate what it's like to have an opposing defense it's a little bit def a little bit different when it's your guys on the other side I I don't like him not playing okay um we're going to jump into the postgame show here everyone complaining didn't watch the full game we dominated the Ravens today I I think domination is a strong word when the Falcons didn't even score a touchdown until the last 30 seconds that doesn't scream domination that screams you move the ball on them a few times by the way like get to the 35 yard line you know what I mean you you weren't diving driving deep into Raven's territory I would not use the word domination to describe Atlanta's performance today change the setting okay so we're going to break the this uh preseason loss down in more detail what the hell I just want to watch preseason game is that so much to ask for I think it is okay are we ready boys and girls this game was pretty good besides coup this game was not the Atlanta Falcons it was third and fourth stringers but I digress all right let's break it down here we go that's okay [Music] the Falcons Dro their second preseason game 13 to2 in Baltimore but to me the story line is not the score sure it's nice to win it's better than winning than losing but in preseason football I'm not going to make a big deal out of onepoint losses or onepoint wins but to me the bigger storylines are young wayu missing three field goals that's an actual starter on the field getting The Yips before the season starts and then 37 guys not playing I do not agree with the decision to not have Michael penck play so we'll get into more detail on that just a moment here are some of the you know box scores and stats from players Taylor hinei led the Falcons with 114 yards eight passes uh eight completions 16 attempts jce mclen had a nice couple of rushes towards the end there especially in that near game-winning touchdown 11 carries 55 yards one touchdown Chris Blair I've actually been really impressed with the Falcons are looking for a fourth or fifth receiver to really emerge after Drake London Darnell Mooney Ray Ray McLoud and cadero Hajj I mean those were the only four wide receivers who were healthy scratchers today so that tells you a lot about where they stand in terms of their roster status so for Chris Blair to really start to emerge as you know a solid fifth receiver I think he's very close to securing a spot on the 53 man roster but to me the biggest storyline is either coup or penic and a lot of other not just starters not playing but like backups not playing I fundamentally do not agree with the decision to sit Michael pennx and a lot of these other second string guys taquon Graham Clark Phillips Eddie Goldman and Tonio Hamilton just a couple of players that need to play that need reps those are not guys that should be given hall passes for the day like if you want to give a hall pass to your you know franchise left tackle Jake Matthews because you know what he's capable of sure same goes for Chris Lindstrom Grady Jared David onada like if you want to give a day off to those veterans that don't need preseason to get their act together I'm with you you know who's not in that camp about half the guys who didn't play today like your rookie quarterback Michael penck he's not going to play a single regular season game if all goes well if we're being honest for maybe two or three years which means you get three preseason games to actually see him play in a real game and you're having him sit for what reason fear of injury it's football they got to play he needs to play he needs to he needs to acclimate himself to NFL game speed as much as possible because he won't get that chance in the regular season like he should be playing every single preseason game this year and next year and he should be playing More Than Just A series or two I would have been happy if penx played the full game today like that would have been much better I think for all parties Michael penx should be playing in the preseason I do not understand why he isn't playing I would love a good explanation of there's some unknown injury okay that would make sense then didn't pop up on any injury reports to me I do not understand penick's not playing and if someone can offer a good explanation I'm all years but I'll tell you what when you've got a new head coach a new OC a new DC a lot of new things new quarterback I think preseason is much more valuable to them than a team that's in you know running it back with the same coach of five six seven years there's a lot of new being placed in new culture new scheme new jargon new playbook new everything new carpets for crying out loud you do not want to have these wrinkles get worked out in the regular season I am not seeing eye to eye with Raheem Morris's approach of not playing these guys in the preseason like it's one thing to sit Jake Matthews and Chris lynam fine even if you want to not play Kirk Cousins although I think he should play at least a series in the preseason finale but cadiro Hajj he's good there's no Improv M needed for him he's ready to roll no those are guys these backups that are not going to play much in the regular season but when their number is called if an injury pops up I would like them to have some preseason reps to draw back to so they're not just a fish out of water if they go out there in week two three s or 12 I am just not on board with this overprotection of players because of some injuries in preseason week one what happened to hel and trce suck but it's football you're going to have to play them you can't bubble wrap them forever that's my two cents on the matter I think we see an over like polar like polarizing o over um what's the word I'm looking for like correction when you have new coaches first year guys and how much they play their starters in the preseason because they're terrified of injuries I remember when the Broncos had Nathaniel Hackett and Russell Wilson remember 2022 their first year together Hackett didn't play a single starter in the preseason all three preseason games Russ sat all the starters sat they did not play them they didn't want to worry about injuries they did not put a lot of value into the preseason they came out and were so bad offensively at just getting the snap off in time that the home crowd in Denver was counting down the play clock for them those are things and Kinks that happen to teams that get solved in August I do not want to see those issues pop up in September and if they do you can drop back to this moment here of like yeah maybe taquon Graham should have been in there because I don't think he's in a spot where he can just take the day off like no there should be a lot of guys that sat today in the game fundamentally disagree with it uh we can talk about the quarterbacks for a moment here now haniki and then we'll get to young way coup 8 for6 114 yards I think he is putting together as much highlights and tape as possible for the Falcons to trade them like they're down a third and a fifth now for next year's draft at the judon trade and the tampering if a team has their quarterback get injured they want to watch some high Niki tape and the Falcons need to put together a better tape than preseason week one so I would not be surprised if hinei gets flipped for like a six or a day three pick swap or something uh John Paddock first game as a falcon he was cut before week one then brought back udfa I think he's not terribly far off from hinaki although there's not really a ton of confidence it looks like in him in terms of like the play calling it was a two-minute drill and they ran it the first three plays like that doesn't scream we believe in our quarterback so I think for John if he's going to make the practice squad it's going to be because he can really help like the starting quarterback prepare each week in between the ears when it comes to his quarterback's play and not so much his arm Talent so this will be I would say a fun qb3 battle to watch for ultimately it's going if the Falcons should start making contingency plans I think we're at the stage of we need to talk about this I don't think action is required just yet lucky for him his three misses all within 50 yards by the way which is inexcusable for a guy who had two misses all of last season in the 40 to 49 yard range which he had three alone today lucky for him though it's a preseason game this is the only time you really get a mulligan now if he comes out and misses a single kick in the preseason finale that next practice there needs to be another kicker there I think Young Wu has proven with his track record that he's good and I'm willing to kind of let him get a pass get a strike without feeling like you to go out and get another kicker but kicker leashes are some of the shortest in the NFL and if this Miss problem continues into the preseason finale I don't think you to bring a kicker in to release coup but I think you need to bring a kicker in so that if the problem continues into the regular season and then you move on from him you'd like to have a head start on a potential replacement you'd like to have some things you know torches in the fire some things cooking and if we get more misses next week that's when you see someone come in hopefully so rough day for young wiku all three misses wide left it didn't feel like he was making an adjustment which I'm not going to pretend to be a kicker expert but when you see kickers M miss the same way it's concerning it's almost like if you're putting and you plop three balls down and you hit the same shot three times and you never adjust for the break or the read or anything like that so coup definitely a little bit on ice right now but lucky for him he's got a proven track record however he doesn't come off like phenomenal Seasons the last two years five misses the last two straight Seasons season before that he had two misses so he's starting to slip out of like that Pro Bowl range he was and now we're getting a shaky preseason I'm monitoring this this is not something to disregard but I don't think actions required yet uh to wrap up the show here a couple of quick notes and hitters Chris Blair I think like I said earlier making a good case to make this roster four grabs 91 yards uh jce mclen him and Carlos Washington are Duke can it out for that third running back spot I've been very impressed by Washington so far remains to be seen that the Falcons want to carry four running backs I don't think so although they may not want to move on from their draft pick just a few months later but still nice to see Jace find his way into the end zone so um that's kind of the latest on the rb3 battle and that's where we're at in the preseason which is why preseason just sucks but talking about just the roster as a whole here after the last couple of days I mean you add Matthew Judah to this front five that's exciting like how does Arnold Evy not play in this game what did we see out of him in the last preseason game to go yeah that's a guy that doesn't need a single more practice rep no he needs all the Reps he can get and then after judon you get the Justin Simmons Edition which I don't believe has actually been made final final final yet my guess is when the Falcons and Simmons and his agent were getting things done Atlanta was probably either on their way to Baltimore so like well there's no sense of signing you right now just to have the whole team be in another city so I'm guessing you'll get the official Atlanta Falcons you know tweet of we have signed Justin Simmons tomorrow but how would you grade the Falcons so far through two preseason games AB C D or F two losses and not very inspiring play like if if young wayu makes his kicks it's it makes one more kick like it's a different game but it didn't feel like the Falcons were really having their way with the Ravens today and the Ravens were also equally like boring to watch their quarterback play was average I mean that's kind of being generous too so it was bad football across the board if you miss this game I'm actually kind of jealous like that's a much better way to spend your Saturday other
