three hours before kickoff is a little bit of a recipe for disaster with him and Arthur Smith you've got a new quarterback to that team a new offensive coordinator and they were told three hours before the game that Fields is starting like I'm sure that there was some level of preparation for plan a with Russ and plan B with Fields but it's not easy to create like two game plans for two different starting quarterbacks and just toss one out Wily nearly and insert the other one so Fields as a quarterback has a lot of strengths I think he is one of the most athletically gifted quarterbacks in the National Football League he can make every throw we know how great he is with his legs the mobility athleticism like you can't remove that from his game but some of his weaknesses include reading defenses and decision making and going through his reads and doing it quickly and getting the ball out on time and if you are giving that quarterback very little heads up they are starting to me that's the worst worst type of quarterback to be given little heads up that they're starting right that's a quarterback that needs to get a good game plan that needs to watch the film that needs to be in the lab getting ready for that week not a really athletic quarterback who struggles with comprehending defensive alignment and things like that so I think this is going to be a blood bath for the Steelers I've got the Falcons by a mile we welcome you on to the show it's it's got to be a bloodbat because like you said starting a football game or like an NFL football game with no really preparation that you thought you were going to start and then like it's just not it's not going to be pretty I I am very excited to see what the Falcons can do with some like Chum in the scratch for week one it's just week one so like there's nothing to overreact too much to here but I think it's worth mentioning that your second round draft pick is a healthy scratch for the first game of the season like is something kind of go not going on but like is he not looking the best in practice I was kind of excited to see your second round draft pick so of the six Falcons rookies only two are active Michael penx Jr and JT bertran so ironically enough the fifth round draft pick is active over a couple of guys selected ahead of him but I think that just speaks volumes to the Special Teams value that Bertram brings to the table whereas the other guys they're not great special teamers and they're somewhat buried on the depth chart so they're going with the veterans in week one over some of the rookies but I'm sure we were all kind of excited to see rook and maybe a little bit of Brandon dless early on but not to be for week one they are healthy scratches along with Casey Washington which by the way this just kind of goes to show that we always get suckered into the preseason storylines and we're like Casey Washington's going to be amazing this year guy's not even suiting up week one like that's preseason football for you we make mountains out of these tiny little anthills of storylines because we're so starved for Content so we're less than 1550 minutes game M so I have five things I want to run through to get you guys ready and in terms of like storylines for this game a little bit of a preview so let's run through those first two things and then we'll talk about uh either game time or prize picks read um but what to watch for how can I not start with K cousins right $180 million quarterback the Falcon signed in March will'll make his Falcons debut we did not see him at all in the preseason it's our first look at him with his third team in the NFL going from the Redskins to the Vikings to the Falcons so all eyes are on Kirk Cousins and how he initially gels with a new offense and a new coaching staff and whether or not there's any rust right not only is he just playing for the first time all year because he didn't play in the preseason but as we all know he is coming off a Toren Achilles he suffered that in October last season he was healthy to start training camp didn't even begin on the pup list or anything I don't think there's any health concerns for him going into the season or concerns about some fatigue or maybe a little bit of like 90 versus 100% to his Achilles no it sounds like all systems are a go for launch for Kirk so obviously a ton of excitement for what number 18 can do second thing to watch for Arthur Smith's return former Falcons head coach now the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator makes his return to the ATL and obviously this is a fan base that has some bitterness and resentment towards him for three straight seven and 10 seasons and I can understand that cuz ultimately there's nothing worse in football than wasting time and it felt like a lot of time was wasted over the last three seasons with no improvements being made year after year after year under Arthur Smith but now he'll be calling the plays for Justin fields which I can kind of combo with this one right here what to watch for Arthur Smith's return coinciding with the backup quarterback starting for Pittsburgh Justin Fields will be the starter today Russell Wilson out with a calf injury that he had pop up during the week in practice so how does Arthur Smith kind of gel with Justin Fields I remember in December when we thought Arthur Smith would return for another season how Justin Fields look like a great quarterback Target for the way Arthur Smith wants to run his offense he loves mobile quarterbacks he even had Ryan tanah Hill moving around a little bit but then he comes to Atlanta moves on from Matt Ryan after one year who's the first quarterback he brings in Marcus Mariota right then he goes out and gets Desmond Ritter who we saw last year had some legs to him so with Justin Fields obviously being explosive mobile athletic quarterback how does Arthur Smith bring that into his game plan with judon Grady Jarrett pro bowlers AJ Terell all pro pro bowl Talent at every single level and I think the funniest part is like from a casual standpoint they will probably gloss over the linebackers as Talent on this defense and they have not been able to say that for a long time that is over now I'm so excited to see what this defense can bring I think it might take a little bit of time to gel simply because judon and Simmons joined you know three weeks ago so there might be a little bit of install still going on for them but both those guys are veterans like they pick things up pretty mean I wouldn't put it past that as a possibility because Tomlin being one of the best coaches remaining or one of the best coaches in the NFL and rahee Morris kind of getting a second crack at being a head coach for the first time in over a decade yeah like that's got a z a greater than 0% chance of happening but even if that does happen he's going to need some help from his players like I only see the way like if the Steelers win it's going to be because Mike puts on a coaching master class and just drowns both teams to a 13 to10 victory for Pittsburgh and EES out one defensive score and a raincloud possible slow start from the Falcons if both teams get off to a slow start I think we can attribute the Steelers slow start to a backup quarterback in Justin field starting with little preparation little heads up little notice for the Falcons I think it's going to be because if this does happen they did not play any starters in the preseason so everyone is sort of getting accustomed to one another like they get all these reps in practice and practice is very valuable everyone's been practicing but there is a difference I think between practice at Flowery Branch and game days at the Benz like I don't think you can replicate it exactly the same so if there is a slow start to be had um we got take Taylor heiki out of that depth chart now actually that's okay um I think it's going to be because everyone's sort of getting used to all the newness a new quarterback in the hle giv the play call a new play caller in Kirk cousins' ears right a new head coach on the sideline like there could be some speed bumps that kind of take take the wind out of the sales for Atlanta after all the adrenaline and hype after kickoff so don't rule out a slow start I I would love to be wrong and I would love to see the Falcons put up a 75 yard touchdown to darn almoney on play number one but I do think there is a decent chance that this could be a little bit of a slow start and then receiver too and what I expect to be a decently pass happy offense like it was just preseason but no offense had more 11 personnel sets three wide receivers one running back one tight end then the Atlanta Falcons they ran 94% of the time now maybe they were doing that that to like throw a curveball to teams and like you know a bit of a red herring and some smoke screens in terms of what their actual plans are but man they used a lot of three wide receiver sets in the preseason so as wide receiver two and a pass happy offense there are going to be targets coming towards Darnell Mooney Fifth boys I'm going to go in chronological order of when they all broke Tyreek Hill if you did not see was arrested detained outside of Hard Rock stadium going to the game this morning he was on the ground in handcuffs with like four m not Miami but you know four Florida policemen and like the the biker police where they got like the big boots and everything and they got the helmet on so not a good look uh a little Scotty sheffler esque no idea what traffic violation Tyreek Hill was in violation of but his agent said that Hill will play today so I don't know if that means he's going to go off for sure or if you want to fade Tyreek Hill do that information what you will but Tyreek Hill showing that he's got speed on and off the field so that was storyline number one that came out um then we' got Dak Prescott or then we got Justin field starting for Russell Wilson who was out with the calf injury so Wilson out fields in and then we got Dak Prescott signing the largest contract in NFL history 4year $240 million contract that's an average of $60 million a season which is I believe $5 million more than the next highest paid quarterback somewhere in that range like Trevor Lawrence and um Jordan love both got 55 million doll deals and I can't remember if someone topped those two but Dak Prescott getting paid hours before their season kicks off and then we got um Jamar Chase in the Bengals this is a [ __ ] show I don't know what the Bengals are going to do this year Jamar Chase was questionable with an illness there was no illness the illness was I want to get paid itis and he's ultimately active for today I wouldn't be shocked if Jamar Chase goes I'll play some snaps but like I'm not going out there in run blocking situations where I might get rolled up from behind so sorry and T Higgins also questionable or doubtful I can't remember which one it was I don't think he's playing uh so definitely something to watch for in terms of your fantasy lineups if you have Chase or Higgins this might be one where you just want to like sit back and just stay away you know what I mean just take the safe route if you got a good receiver on your bench if you got a receiver on your some things to work on right defensively they got to capitalize more on these mistakes the Steelers are making like they're kind of letting them just eek out these field goals and and they're going to start adding up and what I don't want to see happen is the Falcons start stalling offensively and the Steelers keep adding on little three-point chip shots here and there and all of a sudden they come away with a 15-13 win so defensively they're they're making some plays but they really got to buckle down when the Steelers and Justin fields are out of sync and make them pay for that I don't think the Steelers have punted once today maybe once okay we're g to get the stats from the first half on screen here and then I got to run in the bathroom so Reed will hang out with you guys for the next where just two individuals dominated as much as they did TJ Watt and Chris Boswell the kicker singlehandedly won this game for the Pittsburgh Steelers if they if those two guys are not in this game the Falcons might win not by a lot but probably still win I know there's a lot of frustration right now and I'll open up by saying don't give up it is week one do not panic and do not overreact too much you are well in your rights to be frustrated and upset because this was a season that Falcons fans were looking forward to for a long time and the most excitement for a team since 2016 2017 but do not overreact and just give up after one week here are the stats from the loss Justin Fields was told he was starting a few hours before the game he goes uh 17 for 23 and 156 yards in his return to Georgia KT cousins 16 for 26 155 yards one touchdown and two interceptions and in terms of the blame game here is my ranking for blame first I'm going to say the Falcons offensive line specifically pass protection subset Caleb McGary it seemed like Atlanta didn't have a great game plan for TJ watt the game plan was Caleb McGary on TJ watt then they realize that's not working let's put Kyle pittz on him to Chip and then Caleb McGary and that kind of worked but still didn't really work enough and they never really counteracted TJ watt they didn't run to his side of the field right I know that sounds counterintuitive but like a pass rusher can't get a sack if a you're running the ball but B if you're going going to him like you are pushing the ball his direction and you are sending guys to block him and they never did play action either like you very rarely saw if any play action from today like that's like the name of the game when you've got a guy who's living in your back field let him think the ball's going to the running back and then you peel out I don't know if that was just because they didn't have trust in cousins' Mobility following his Achilles injury but for me number one person or group I'm blaming today is the offensive line the Steelers defensive line bullied them especially in the second half they tormented the Falcons o line next up Kirk Cousins Kirk Cousins looked Rusty that's that that that's a fact he looked Rusty he did not look like a $180 Million Man and that's okay for one week what's very frustrating to me though is I felt like a lot of the rust could have been avoided and like I had preached for the last 6 weeks and a lot of you told me I was wrong in the comment section and who am I to say what Rahe Morris should do he knows more than I do don't you think some of the starters should have played in the preseason now don't you feel like maybe some of the illegal shifts or a snap running into a guy in motion could have been worked out in the preseason those were the little things that really added up today that is why I wanted these guys to play in the preseason even if it's just for one quarter 10 snaps 15 snaps in instead they came out looking Rusty and that 10-point offensive performance shows it I feel bad for the defense they got put in some tough spots they gave up two field goals after CK cousins turned the ball over twice on interceptions they did their best to keep this team in the game holding the guy to no touchdowns should be enough to win a game and then third I'm gonna sign blame to Rahe Morris mostly for what I just talked about this team came out and somewhat ill-prepared for TJ Watt and offensively looked Rusty like they just looked like they were not running at full speed robins and I thought looked great we can throw his stats on screen for you guys here he was a great rusher and a good receiver for them bejon Robinson 18 carries 68 yards like he was kind of the heartbeat of this offense what happened to Drake London dude said his name once at the beginning of the game and then adios didn't see him for the rest of the day I don't know if he was just not getting open I got to rewatch The Game to see if he wasn't separating if he was open and the ball wasn't finding him or what was going on but nothing from Drake London two grabs for 15 yards I've got more to rant on and I'm sure everyone watching you know gamechanging play like a interception or a force fumble which the Steelers produced a few of and that was somewhat the Difference Maker in this game but they still held their own like Justin Fields they had a couple of nice passes to George Pickins but no other receiver touched the football they had some good runs here and there but if I tell you before this game that the Steelers don't score a touchdown you definitely think the Falcons win and if I tell you they only put up 18 points you likely think the Falcons win I feel bad for the defense they made some big stops especially at the end there on and one get the ball back to the offense and they just immediately punt it right back I feel bad for the defense if you want some reassuring good news though this defense looks a hell of a lot better than it was last year it wasn't a train wrecker or a disaster last year but Grady Jarrett first game back a huge sack Matthew judon I've got Nate lman jumping over a pile to take down Justin fields on a QB sneak like you got guys flying across the field defensively and we didn't even get much from Justin Simmons or Jesse Bates so you know those guys are going to start picking things up too Terrell somewhat got bullied by George Pickins at times especially on that big 40 yard throw but overall really solid performance from the Falcons defense the offense failed them today uh injury-wise I saw Mike Hughes at one point leave the game um and Clark Phillips had to fill in I mean I'm sure we're going to see in the press conference Kirk Cousins and the oh this is a sad sad s sad stat speaking of Kirk Cousins he had as many completed passes as times hit by the Steelers pass rush in the second half courtesy of Daniel flick only 51 total yards in the second half it was a complete meltdown offensively in quarters three and four and it finally looked like they started to kind of get the Mojo going and the cobwebs out at the end of half number one with that touchdown pass to Kyle pittz not to be very frustrating and I think the real frustrating part is this was supposed to be the easy game of the first three right Pittsburgh at home then you go to Philly on Monday night they looked pretty good against the Packers and then back home on Sunday night against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs not to overreact but you are staring at 0 and3 you're already 0 and one and now you're looking at 0 and3 very quickly overall I will leave you guys with this the season is not over and no you are not benching Kirk Cousins for Michael penck like stop one bad game in his first
