Ep. 2-Did you Know the NFL Playoff Overtime Rules? (2024)

[Music] did players in the Super Bowl really not know the overtime rules where did we get it right where did we get it wrong in the NFL this past season and how about that foul call on jayen bleepin brunon in that game earlier in the week against the Houston Rockets do they need to go to an automatic review let's say in the last minute or two we're g to talk about it all tonight on chat hit up about it we we watched it we talked about it last week yep and we didn't really get into the whole overtime rules and things like that so it's been a big topic of convers conversation this week and I wanted to get into it with y'all and maybe I want to start with you because to me Kyle shanan was your head coach at one point offensive coordinator at one point at one point yes he was there was some mist that were made when it comes to play calling yep now there weren't many mistakes on play calling in this Super Bowl but where he made a mistake potentially was with the overtime rule a lot of fans claimed he had no idea what the overtime rule was much like a lot of us didn't know we were all watching the Super Bowl together and I even said it I was very adamant of like no it's literally it's the still the same thing you get you know the first team who scores a touchdown wins a game that's it but you were very adamant I think you were the only one who really knew the rule in terms of both teams get a chance to possess the football yes and so give me your thoughts is Kyle Shanahan getting too much flak not enough flak or or just the right amount of flak for what many are calling his blunder in the Super Bowl that's a firebowl offense to me whoa fire the Super Bowl it might be I let's just let's just talk about it like let's really chop it up like men he has been a victim of this very rule he was on the team the he's been in every single overtime game in Super Bowl history there's been two he's been a part of both he's lost both due to his decision making the point blank well it wasn't his decision making that lost it in the Super Bowl the first time around in overtime it wasn't like oh well we decide not to take the ball first or to take the ball first you're talking about his play calling at the end of that game in turn of running the football a couple of different times he tried to throw it that is his decision making he has full autonomy to make those decisions you I was just talking about in overtime specifically but all I'm saying is that you can't let that happen you're supposed to put Pat Mahomes on the field first it's just what comes down with it it is so didn't even the ref was uh when they were doing the coin toss he was like hey you you sure you want to do that like brother if they're saying you're sure like they weren't even supposed to do that yeah that's crazy that's like what they did to Jer Alexander when uh when he went out there for Co against Carolina where there was like you know we deferred or something defer our choice and he worded it wrong and the ref was like you mean that and he was like oh yeah yeah that's what we want so he kind of helped save him and I think the ref was maybe trying to them a little was the scapegoat and lost his job he held momes to 19 points are you kidding me come on man there's been only one team that scored more than I think like 27 or more points on on the Chiefs this year who was that the Green Bay Packers I'm just saying you said too much still too much Packers I mean that was just hey bring some of your own merch in whatever you want yeah you keep letting me bring the merch is going to be Packer stuff you make I mixed in a little Sonic today and I PE and we got the you know the the dart board and whatnot I'm going just start keeping merch in my car you should we're going to have to start doing that it's become the new like how you always had cleats and you always had basketball shoes now you always have merch in your car you never know when a podcast can break out that's right especially with the four of us uh and you know what's even crazier to me I I don't think it was a fireable offense but what was even crazier to me the fact that we didn't know it and you knew it so kudos to you appreciate it brother I I don't know where you're talking about me I I definitely knew that Ru you didn't know that rule yes I did the O the overtime rule changed in 2022 so the fact that Kyle Shanahan and Kyle yek Eric Armstead these guys don't know the overtime rule like they're professional football players and he's a head coach he's got to know that rule now it it's not what cost them the game you stop Patrick Mahomes you win the game potentially right so I guess that's why Steve WIS became the scapegoat but I mean certainly it would make more sense to take the football second right Chase yeah I mean you just got to know what you want or what you have to get out of it that's the big part about the whole situation is now you have to worry about well if Patty scores we can we can we know what to answer with but if you kick a field goal let's be honest like the cliche is a cliche for a reason you don't want to give Patrick Mahomes the ball last and that's the worst situation you can be in in the football right now and guess what the magic Happened Here we are now don't give Patty the ball back there's a quote by Arthur Ash that I I use for work but it's uh the key to success is self-confidence and the key to self-confidence is preparation preparation preparation preparation um the Chiefs they've been talking about this since the beginning of the Season Andy Reed is a meticulous man when it comes to making sure that he has every single ey dotted T cross mentality and he's more of a devils in the detail kind of coach and doesn't matter what I mean San Francisco was the better team I mean in my opinion I know they didn't win but that still like collectively they had the better Squad but that just shows that man you got to you got to have someone in the background preparing you for every moment and the chiefs were ready and they had the self-confidence to go into that overtime so they got success out of it GT I love what you just said because the Chiefs prepared y'all know that they had an entire team meeting to go over overtime rules prior to the playoffs kicking off Smart yeah that's what good organizations do the 49ers didn't do that in the cost them and it's like such a small thing like we this never happens at the time only one team one overtime this is the second overtime ever in Super Bowl yeah it was of course Kyle should have thought about not to bring up sore memories but we love you all right yall want to hear what Kyle Shanahan said after the game is kind of makes me believe that he didn't know the rule he said in that quote none of us have a ton of experience with it we went through all the analytics and talked to those guys we decided it would be better getting the ball third because if both teams matched and scored we wanted to be the ones to have a chance to go win it end quote that to me sounds like a bunch of BS yeah where he's like just trying to save himself in the organization of yeah we probably should have taken the ball second because easily like if you give the ball let's let's play it out this way if you give the ball to Patrick Mahomes first he goes down and score they're not going to go for two they score they kick the field goal with their the extra point with buter hey we go up Seven Brock py gets the football Christian mcaffry all them they go down score touchdown hey maybe we want to go for two from the two yard line with CMC and we win the damn Super Bowl yeah because it at that the dis this was Disneyland Patrick Mahomes now yeah because again you don't like you said you don't want to give Patrick Mahomes the ball last with a chance to score so if I'm the 49ers that's exactly what I would have done yeah take it second and try to score and go for two if the if the chief scored and Patrick said if we get the ball second we were going for two now of course you always say that afterwards right but I will say it probably would have happened they're like we're not gonna give this another chance we have the best quarterback maybe of our lifetime may you know himmer Brady we'll say yeah yeah no I mean like said why would you ever give Brady the ball last and I think you know Pat Mahomes just AI himself that he's in a similar conversation to it's like LeBron and Michael Jordan situation he like can he continue to live up to the potential of what he could be he's got a nice little decade window yeah does he's only how old is he he's 28 yeah 28 I don't know why I think he's older I mean just because he's been so many games you know you're just like 28 I I would love to have four years back right now this these ankles right now get out of here to put it in perspective Pat Mahomes officially now has more playoff wins than pton Manning I did see that that's crazy bro well I saw that I mean we know Patrick uh pton uh pton Manning was was not a great playoff quarterback I know he's got two rings the the Broncos obviously carried him to the second one but we all know that he wasn't that great of a playoff quarterback yeah yeah sure I'm not going to let that I'm not going to let that come out of my mouth well Aaron Rogers wasn't is not a great playoff quarterback he hasn't won a ton of games in the playoffs well that's a that's a fact that's a fact yeah yeah I'll admit that he has he has not been great in the playoffs now it always has not been his fault that they're not good A lot of the times as we alluded to last week I mean he carried a a team that would had a piss poor defense to the NFC championship game for sure so things happen you run into you know Russell Wilson where you could have won that game to go to the Super Bowl Brandon bosk tries to go up there and field the the onside kick instead of letting Jordy Nelson take it you know he tried to be a hero I mean there's all these different mitigating factors but fact of the matter remains he doesn't have a great postseason record football's more of a team sport though I'm wearing an shirt I don't I don't football's still more a team sport to to put it just on the quarterback but it does obviously expedite you well the quarterback's going to get the blame the quarterback's GNA get the glory every single time every single time especially nowadays yes it means so much you get all these rule changes for you you gotta make it work and now some of these guys do put up crazy numbers like let's be honest like Aaron has put up ridiculous numbers and then you lose on a weird onside kick and Patrick I mean I mean statistically it wasn't his best playoff ever but he makes it freaking happen somehow someway and those little magic plays that that that RPO that we talked about last week those little things you're like well all you got to do is just put the ball in this guy's hands and he's gonna get you eight yards when you need it and that eight yards to everybody else feels like a mile like you get Brock that same situation he had third and three I can't remember how many times like it was like third and two third and three multiple times couldn't convert yep Patty converted feel like felt like every time I know that's not the truth because that first half was snooze vest let's be honest well that's the thing and this is what I was also going to say is that if the Chiefs didn't have as great a defense as they had this year there's no way they win the Super Bowl the defense is what really kept them in it and Patrick is like all right I'm the statement I can I can go win the football game but the defense let's be honest kept them right in that football game because if they don't have a good defense they're not even making it to the Super Bowl no no I don't know if you beat the bills that's what I'm saying because their offense was very pedestrian The Playmakers out out the Trav are not great p is good rash rice he's going to be he's going to be really good but he's still a rook he's a p yeah you know mvs Sky Moore caderas Tony like those guys are not it garbage if this team does not find a way to find more Playmakers especially as Travis Kelce continues to get older they're going to be into some trouble playmaker wise but heard we've heard that story before I mean how many quarterbacks come out and say I don't want to go there I mean I mean philli Eli Eli that's right where was Eli's to initially I think it was the S Diego traed for each other right they did bro they did can you imagine Philip Rivers in New York he won those super I think would won them yeah oh yeah Chargers had so much talent and did nothing nothing absolutely nothing because the special teams was just so G darn horrendous so bad for so many years that team we talked about a little bit last week in terms of so much talent but I just don't believe in them because their their talent never stays healthy and they can they the head coach always seems to screw things up and yeah it was bad anyways let's move on to let's look at this past year we'll kind of like recap this past year and just think about guys some of the things that you had mentioned preseason if you can remember that far back in terms of maybe some teams or some players that you were specifically high on where you felt like you got it right where you felt like you got it wrong I'll start us off in terms of honestly I was uh I was I'll start off where I was wrong we we we'll go with the wrong route first I really if you listen to the word with Gan ESPN Chattanooga I was incredibly high on the Atlanta Falcons this year with their talent same Y A lot of people felt the same way with their talent y I thought Arthur Smith would be able to find a way to incorporate all these weapons that he had Bean Robinson in the mix all they had to do was find decent quarterback play with Desmond Rider facts and they were so heav heavily invested in saying this is our guy and it just it didn't come to fruition and that was the biggest that was one of the biggest things that I was incredibly wrong about and the Falcons I thought their floor was going to be 10-11 wins they got 100% I thought they were going to make the playoffs they should have won that division Tampa Bay I think they're I think Tampa Bay I mean shoot they weren't they were picked to finish bottom of that that division along with Carolina and they ended up winning the damn thing so that's one place where I was wrong this past year can I say the entire AFC South you certainly can tell us more uh so to me I thought I thought the division was so bad that the Titans would still win it yeah I thought we would win it at like nine and eight something stupid like that you know I I don't know if that's legit possible I thought the Texans were be really bad I thought CJ would actually have a good year I actually thought he would have a decent year but it's like ah good stats terrible team kind of guy was wrong definitely thought the Colts were bad 500 or over 500 Jacksonville was about right I was like uh we'll beat them out for 9 and8 a battle of the nine and eights and I missed all of it except for Jacksonville kind of but I still thought they might be even worse than that but man Titans stunk they sure did Budd okay line was bad Derrick Henry's looking good in the gym though I mean I saw him work putting in that work my favorite time of the year as a Titans fan we just get more dere cont like he is gonna be Thanos by the end of this Seas I mean he he I feel like he gets bigger every year like he's just getting that old man strength now yeah so I'm on the same you know trajectory as you guys because same wavelength yeah I was gonna say wavelength but we did it last week that was a joke last week keep doing it so more plug we can give for wavelength the better amen so sorry about that brother and um and so basically uh I thought bejan was going to win offensive rookie of the year I had no thought in my mind that the Texans would put CJ strad in a position to not only just be offensive rookie of the year but be in what was it in the Pro Bowl I mean at rookie like I've that that was something that completely went over my head so I'm on the same exact wavelength as y'all gotcha wa C go back can I give you guys I'm gonna give you a player and I'm GNA give you a team do it to it's your world man we're just living in it stop it I love you um and I love you guys oh thank you love you to BU the player was Odell Beckham Jr wrong on him or right on him I was wrong I thought obj was gonna have 1500 yards and 12 touchdowns with Lamar I thought he was gonna just break out and just be that guy that was in 2014 he's washed up go be a family man go be with Kim Kardashian he's hanging with Kim Kardashian right now go enjoy yourself brother it's a family run program but we'll talk a little bit more about I'm say I've heard some things about obj yeah me too brother yeah yeah he's the [ __ ] when you talk about him being a family man that might wrong about I thought they were going to the Super Bowl and they I mean defense they they had it all pieces figured out offense I thought Tu was going to be in the MVP convo it just didn't happen they were hurt they were better than I thought they were GNA be to be honest with you I wasn't I wasn't really sold on the Dolphins and I thought they performed better than I thought they would this year but obviously with the Jets and Aaron Rogers getting hurt that kind of threw a wrench in the plans that I also thought the Buffalo Bills were not going to win the division I thought the Jets would win the division obviously the Jets don't have Aaron Rogers and that's a problem I think you put SC the scratch on all your jets back you know predictions because I don't think that uh that they would have they would have yeah scratched that so yeah that's just like the Bengals too you can't you can't you know your predictions for the Bengals going into the season were you know obviously fantastic scratched because Joe bur getting hurt and injured for the red you know rest of the year uh Browning obiously Jake Brown what were you what were you right on M what was I right on yeah we're snake drafting this bad boy um ah wow I mean you guys put me on I mean I was right about momes I mean he's still gonna find a way you know it's he's just the best he is our Brady he is going to for sure be around for the next 15 years that's what I was right about that's knock on wood that he doesn't get hurt of some sort please amen dude I one thing I don't I'm not say I was right on it but I had a really good feeling I was when this beginning of the Season watching Hard Knox with Detroit I was like oh I am lit for this like this squad I felt like legit on themit and I was cuz I was watching like oh dude I I can get behind these guys I hope they do really well and I was like you behind what seeing the the behind the scenes of those guys oh yeah this like anyways Greg just just trying to finish a thought and you're over here throwing these these signed winding little comments just throws me off my game I know so no anyways the lions lions having a good season that was something I actually felt like I got right shout out to ugt yeah that was a good one that was what that was another one I got wrong was I was like too much hype you know you just it's just like one of the they just felt like the media team yeah yeah and I believe in Dan Campbell in a lot of ways but I was like ah it's just too much there's just too much but then I was wrong the Lions will find a way to Lions they'll find a way they live in Detroit yeah well and they did find a way to you know be the Lions because they they give up a huge lead in the the that's a that's a huge win for them yeah to the NFC championship game yeah did you see the the video where it was like uh the difference between San Francisco and then the Detroit like fans they just like yeah you know this is like the greatest year ever I don't even care if we lose the game and that's Detroit then like you know San Francisco fans they were just like yeah you know I'll be happy here I'd be happy either way we got five of them I'm good I think that's just California fans in general like they always show up L to like baseball games Dodgers games they leave early yeah like the what going on there is uh my thing I definitely got right Lamar Jackson MVP I really thought that was going to happen you called it too did you yeah nailed it yeah I thought it just I mean that that roster was kind of building up and I was like we just need one of these wide receivers to work out one of them and the defense I mean awesome dog Alexander was that that pick that pick I was like whoever gets this guy is getting star like whoever gets this safety out of Notre Dame is getting an absolute star Hamilton I don't know Hamilton Jer I was like yeah he's pretty damn good too he's all right he's like M's like ask me how he did against Drake London now Kyle Hamilton's a dog he went 14th too yeah that's the crazy thing and everybody was like you know he's like the best player a lot of these guys and know everybody's like why is he falling just because he say safety on there watch him in that playoff game you watched him in that last playoff game yes they lost he was a dog yeah that boy can play and he gets everywhere he's going to be another one that's just he can cover any position he gets like how Fred Warner we talked about last week like that dude just covers everything Kyle does that from the safety spot he guard multiple guys and it took Travis Kelce on a rope from momes for him to get the first tight end to score on him all the way in the AFC Championship yeah it was a dime too back shoulder kind of like back back knee on almost it was weird so for out of a 100 times could you make that catch McKey no bro I'm making it twice two times out of 100 it better be some girls out there that's right that's one for the cheerleaders yeah all right for me just to round it out where we were right this year I was um I was really I was feeling good about Jordan love and sitting behind Aon Rogers for all those years now I'm going to be honest with yall I didn't think he was going to do as well as he did this year but I thought he would be good but I didn't think he'd be this good I thought everybody was picking the Packers both end of the you bottom of the division I thought they'd be okay this year I thought they'd be right around 500 and that's exactly where they were good enough to get into the postseason and jaylo proved it that he is he is that guy that franchise quarterback in the secession Packers just grow him on trees down there yeah I about to say yeah I love it I have to get one of these in terms of the Jordan love variety nothing to do that's right can you imagine though if they had camera phones around where Brett fa was there he would have never have made it he would have never made it no way no chance having a good time oh yeah he you ever read that book Gunslinger he was wild have to check that out I I've never I've got it if you want to borrow it I'll is all right last thing I wanted to get to tonight fellas was I don't know if y'all saw the Jaylen Brunson foul call at the end of the Rockets game this past week it's earlier in the week it was a horrendous call by the by the officials the officials tried to go back and amend it at least said hey we were wrong shouldn't have called that called that file at the end of the game and it's not like the Knicks were going to they they had an opportunity to win that game the game would have gone overtime if the foul wasn't called would have given the Knicks an opportunity to win it's not guaranteed that they would have won but at least it gives them a chance you call that foul there where Aaron holiday gets the you know the block and he hoists it up from 30 some odd feet as he's fading away and you make that foul call I've seen rougher foul calls called or not called in that moment than what Jaylen Brunson did to Aaron holiday I thought it was absolutely atrocious I know these guys saw it we're going to talk a little bit about it just that in general and then does there need to be an amendment to like the last minute of whether it's NFL or an NBA game to say hey look there's a replay Center for a reason if there is an egregious call we have the authority to push a button to say we need to look at this one and possibly change it because you all screwed it up pretty badly instead of them at the end of the game or afterwards coming out and saying yeah that really shouldn't have been a foul call because that what good does that do me to you know today or yesterday or two days ago whatever it may be does me no good for you to come out and say hey we screwed that one up well thanks now you just cost us a potential win yeah and those wins are going to matter for them they are es especially with that seating and everybody kind of clumped up in the middle of the East there yeah I but basball moves too quick man it's too much that's kind of what I'm thinking there's too much fluidity to it and like the one play just like anything else builds a totally different play if it doesn't happen you know maybe this next play doesn't happen so it's hard to go retroactively back and say hey that's not going to that's not going to fall what do you mean the foul call was called you can look at the replays they dud the refs looked at the replay before they ended the game and they still called it a foul no that's not what they were replaying they were replaying to see if there was still time left on the clock when the ball left his hands you can't take away a foul you can't take away away foul that's what I'm saying is that there needs to be somebody when they review it in that sense of like hey that was a damn foul we need to change that cuz that was egregious like the Nola no call where whatever the guy's name was that ran right into the receiver not even looking that was blatant as anything like we have replay centers and replays can happen really quickly nowadays sure have it happen push the button say we need to fix this because that was damn horrendous and we cannot have things like that happening with the the amount of Replay that we have nowadays I just think that's gonna get really dicey yeah that so many no calls I thought about it I was like already the last two minutes of any game espe no last one minute last one minute yeah but I'm the last minute still even that's going to last forever in a close playoff game now we're going to have to go every other minute it it's it's only like a quick replay bang they're gonna they're push a button it's going to buzz down to whomever's officiating saying we screwed it up we need to change it that was not a foul Greg it moves so fast in the NBA and those refs are somewhat subjective with like their calls like I mean we've we've seen I just want to get it right you can have them get it right but that's what makes Sports I mean it's just you you we have the technology we need to get these calls right I personally like your concept I just think it needs to be in the playoffs that's fine even if you just want in the playoffs I think it you can't do that with all teams in the NBA I will say season that's F yeah I will say it was a foul bro like no it wasn't yes it was no it wasn't airspace he came down that's a foul that's not a foul you've seen the worst things not called in the last seconds of a game that was definitely you're just saying that it I understand what you're saying but I understand what mig's saying too because he did T him there's been worse fouls you know happened that weren't called even the officials came out said it wasn't a foul that's not a foul but you have to let the shooter land though he did not a foul the officials the professional officials said that was not a foul that's not a foul if this was any other team besides the Knicks would you be this passionate about it yeah no absolutely hell out of here absolutely not terrible as a person that officiates basketball games that was a horrendous call I think Jaylen Bronson is one hell of a player bro fouled the referee said it wasn't a foul it's not a foul hey man listen you can think what you want but the professional officials came out and said after they looked at it yeah it was not a foul so you can give me your opinion that's fine but the professionals opinions yeah they said it's not a foul I think basketball is just too it's too quick of a game there's too much fluidity to it to like go back and retro just knock that's it it's not retroactive but there if there's no calls then like there's going to be a situation like if they miss a call and they don't call anything and then it leads to like a fast break but they called it off that's where it's gonna get really dicey yeah on a foul call maybe you can yeah what about on a foul call but then you gotta give it the other way too I mean that's just the thing you're G always getting these arguments like well if you're gonna give it too then you gotta well then how about how about in the NFL do you want like a challenge flag for the well they have challenges I know but for this particular you know like an emergency yeah like this is the challenge this is my this is my green challenge F and this is for the this is the fouls you get one of those and like is that well if the nixit had a challenge left they could have challenged it but they didn't have a challenge left so was po poor poor game management it's management how do you know that's gonna happen you don't but you can't save it just in case but you have to strategically use challenges like for example I love the way Jay kid uses challenges with Luca anytime luuka gets fouled he's more than likely going to challenge it specifically if it's early on it's like two three fouls you just have to be strategic that's coaching that's on yeah that's no it's not I'm sorry for you as a New York Knicks fan that this this game didn't work out for you this was less about the Knicks and this was more about talking about potential putting a ruling to change non fouls or fouls I'm with you I just think it needs to be that's fine in the playoff that's fine we can put it in the playoffs what about for the NFL um again y'all got replay you got people you got referees in the sky eyes in the sky that can easily Buzz down you have time in the NFL yes that's what I'm saying that's another thing you got time in between plays that's easier to make that call in the NFL than it would be in the NBA I agree with you that yeah it's like baseball and football would be like the two that would has the most well baseball easy to implement I'm I'm just saying like there's no like time and space for a baseball game like there is a specific time for a football game and a basketball game where you do that baseball not run on time no and they have umpire challenges so if there's a questionable call they're always going to go to the replay sure like they have that ability to do that there's an Umpire review that they can do that only started with a handful of years ago yeah yeah so maybe we see that in the future maybe we do um it's hard for me because there is so many no calls is it's like because those refs get together on for basketball games and they say all right how are we going to call this game are we going to are we going to let things slide are we going to I mean and not every single foul is called there's a ton of foul fou there's a ton of traveling in the freaking NBA and they never call it I mean it's just it's a more subjective game for entertainment purposes oh yeah so I but I do agree that you know La in general do you call that chippy call on the last shot of the game when the game is probably going to overtime no that's like that's like calling a foul or a penalty in the NFL on a Hail Mary think about how many like Ticky Tac calls like fouls happen penalties happen in the in the NFL on a ha Mary like guys are pulling at each other I remember Randle Cobb shoved the dude in the end zone and caught it like that stuff just doesn't get called that was just a bad call by the referee there agree in that situation agree I would just like to amend it at some point and like you said in the playoffs I think would be great but because like that you remember when Jason Tatum foul Braun I was heated just like you but it's a regular season game there's nothing we can do but yeah they need to for the playoffs and then for the uh the NFL um I just think about the Saints and the Rams somebody should have called somebody should have called yeah so I was at that game oh were you yeah word yeah the XX bought us tickets like the day of hey and they were like $800 for two tickets she paid for them take it yeah we'll take it shout out to Linds thank you Lindsay linday it's always good to be friends with some ex so let's well we're not friends but okay we're just I'm thanking her right now there's no
